When it was first released i told myself i’d probably never get it because i didn’t want to grind. After maybe 2 months of casually playing fractals a few times a week i had the fully upgraded back pieces. It’s really, really, really not that bad.

Next step!

Asuran Space Agency, puddle jumpers and portals in space, fight the space dragon and space pirates.

That could actually be awesome. My favorite D&D setting was Spelljammer.

"The Emperor" Title.

The cultural outfit title is “emperor” because it’s a play on “the emperor’s new clothes”. This has nothing to do with gender and changing it to “empress” undermines the whole reason it’s called what it is.

Case closed.

Without my sarcasm, I prefer the “Dungeons & DRagons” theme in an RPG type game such as GW2. You can say it’s been 250 years or what have you, but the fact is, its a game and it’s not earth.

Regardless, if they choose to further delve into sci-fi type content, I will eventually loose interest and stop playing. I am sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. (not saying this is a game breaker, but it will be for some)

Ironic then, that the last new big campaign setting released for dungeons and dragons was one with giant skyscrapers supported by magic, magi-tech trains, airships and magic “robots”.

Dungeon and Dragons was out long before it was a Video Game… lol

I was actually referring to the table top version of the game…

And just to note, Gary Gygax sent his players to spaceships in outerspace as far back as the 70s.

I personaly like history, mythology and might and magic in games (although i like pure scyfy on tv ). Not very fond of the cyber and steam influences. Gives a feeling of the Syfy channel inhouse movies. Once tried to watch one but fell to sleep within 5 min :-)
Wouldn’t it be great to have more seafaring instead of flying ;-)
But as long as the most of the content is historical Sword and Scorcery influenced i’m not complaining.

This game needs more sharknado!

I’m still not seeing how this has any bearing on being magitech or beyond magitech though. If the magitech ships aren’t strong enough to beat a dragon, then it’s magitech, but if they’re strong enough to beat a dragon they’re not longer magitech?

Come on, you’re trying way too hard here to find something wrong with what I’m saying.

The airships – specifically the one you’re on at the end – were ridiculously powerful relative to Zhaitan, his minions, or ANYTHING else in the storyline and lore up to that point. It was like watching a battle in Braveheart and suddenly the USS Enterprise appears in the sky and starts hitting the English with phasers. You might like the medieval theme, and you might like the Sci-fi theme, but they simply wouldn’t fit together in that context.

I have nothing against “airships” or “steampunk” or even “magitech” stuff in fantasy, but they have to be written such that they fit into the lore. As it stands, the flying battleships with super-lasers are the Enterprise here and the Elder Dragons are quickly looking like the British in the above example.

Short of a complete kitten -pull of, “Oh, the other dragons and their minions are immune to lasers.” or “Super laser? What super laser? The guy that ran those got fired last week, sorry.” it’s hard to see how the rest of the Elder Dragons really pose any threat to the level of technology that we’re wielding now.

It sounds like your issue isn’t about steampunk or magitech per se as much as it’s about the Pact being too powerful compared to dragons. The same net effect would have occurred if traehurn would have turned into a god and zapped zaitan or queen jenna would have gone super saiyan mesmer on him and pulled a deus ex machina. From a lore stand point, we already had giant dieselpunk tanks, helicopters, airships and laser cannons before we reached the scene at the end of the story.

How is having a bunch of airships “beyond” steampunk or magitech? If we have one airship, it’s magitech, but if we have 10 it’s beyond magitech? 20 airships? 30? I’m not seeing the rationale here.

I didn’t say anything about the NUMBER of airships, did I? I referenced the strength of the technology of the airships relative to the “Big Bad” of the storyline.

I’m still not seeing how this has any bearing on being magitech or beyond magitech though. If the magitech ships aren’t strong enough to beat a dragon, then it’s magitech, but if they’re strong enough to beat a dragon they’re not longer magitech?

It always strikes me as bizarre how some people need to cram “fantasy” into the tiniest conceptual box possible for it to count as “fantasy”. Medieval knights and castles =/= fantasy by a long run and airships do not somehow make something less fantastical (rather, they make something MORE fantastical by being impossible in the absence of any attempted scientific explanation).

It’s not the fact that things like Airships exist in the game. It’s how they relate to the lore as it’s presented to us. It’s hard to continue believing that the entire Elder Dragon thing is serious at all when we suddenly have the kind of technology that we had at the end of the Zhaitan story. That went way beyond just “Steampunk” or “Magitech” stuff.

How is having a bunch of airships “beyond” steampunk or magitech? If we have one airship, it’s magitech, but if we have 10 it’s beyond magitech? 20 airships? 30? I’m not seeing the rationale here.

Furthermore, the classic “cyberpunk” themes of ubiquitous internet and information technology are completely and utterly absent from this game, no matter how many golems and steampunk airships exist, making that argument a non-starter. Constructs and artificially created being have been a solid theme in mythology since the ancient greeks as well as fantastic flying mechanisms, so there really isn’t anything stopping the game from being 100%, genuine fantasy.

No, I’m 100% right.

They’re proportionate. Norns, male or female, in general are in a league of their own.

Once again, you’re saying that an SUV (norn female) is proportionate to a school bus (norn male) because both vehicles are larger than a compact car (all humans). If you’re going to claim with a straight face that a female norn is proportionate to a male when clearly they are the most sexually dimorphic race in the game then…well, we’re just going to keep talking in circles.

These 2 are clearly the least proportionate genders in the game, and this male isn’t even max height:

Frankly, I don’t know how to better state it, so I will attempt it once more. If you can watch the dev livestream for the current content and not understand that it is an extended platformer, you are unfamiliar with gaming genre. That’s it, pure and simple. Living story content should not be defined by a niche element which some players will love and some will hate. This is an MMO with a diverse player base. You want the core game to appeal across that wide diversity and the living story to be told in the broadest possible way. This should be straightforward stuff for any experienced gamer.

Sure there is platforming in the current update, but your original claim was that voting was “gated”, which is completely absurd. You don’t even have to hit the space bar to JUMP ONCE, to get to the voting! You don’t have to enter any instanced mini game or do anything that any player with enough skill to aim a simple AOE can’t accomplish.

You might as well claim that everything in Lion’s Arch is gated content because you have to figure out how to aim your character into walking toward an asura gate to get there. You’re essentially saying that something is gated from people who cannot perform the most rudimentary function of character control and pushing a key to activate an AOE, and if that is the case for some players, then they have bigger issues because the rest of the game is basically unplayable to them.

Sadly, they have already broken faith around the platformers in-game. Originally they were to be optional content, there for those that like them, optional otherwise. This release of the LS they have even gated voting , an important element of impact on the world, behind a mini-game platformer. I don’t do platformers and am unable to vote. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Very sad.

Did you actually try it? Even once? Because getting up to the airship is not even remotely platforming. If you use the lightning crystal near where the elemental spawns you don’t even have to jump, you can do the entire thing never pushing more than 1 button at a time or using any kind of timing or aim.

That’s what platforming is here. Your skills are replaced by platforming skills and you use those to play a different game than the one you bought. What I object to is platforming taking over the core game, not how relatively hard or easy it is. When I play GW2 I want to play my character and his/her skills, not the skills of the month.

So you never use environmental weapons?

I have, and prefer my own actually. But, that would be a non-sequitur in the current discussion. My objection is to temporary mini-games that have somehow made their way into the core game, gating content for all players. This is where you learn a new game to play rather than the one you bought.

This is a ridiculous level of hyberbole. There is no “gate”. If you want to vote, you get the lightning attunement and simply place the aoes to get to the top. No gating, no jumping, no platforming and no learning any new mechanics (unless you never figured out how to place an AOE).

No hyperbole required. But, I see that some are unfamiliar with gaming genre. If you can watch the dev livestream and not understand that the new content is an extended platformer, you simply are unfamiliar with gaming. Platforming is extremely niche within the greater MMO content market. It makes no sense whatsoever to move the story forward through a niche element.

I’ve been playing games since Atari so, yeah, i’m very aware of what platforming is. Complaining about how this content is somehow gated by any sort of “platforming” is beyond absurd though, because you don’t need to make any controlled jumps to get to the voting. Someone with no fingers could easily place a few AOEs and make their way to the top without EVER HITTING THE SPACE BAR. Stop inventing something to be upset about.

Hypothetical:

In a word with magic AND firearms, isn’t heavier armor somewhat useless?

Heavy plates were used to stop early firearms though (see the term “bulletproof”) and now we have magic + armor in this scenario. In any case, whenever your have guns, giant weapons, fantastical creatures and magic in one game, the whole concept of practical armor is completely arbitrary anyway.

Is this your first RPG? Or have you been playing Skyrim lately? Im used to DnD, so having different classes use different armor makes sense to me. When you spend your time honing your body to fight, heavy armor is easy to bear, while when you focus on honing your magical craft, you ignore your body, and dont want heavy armor weighing you down while you try to cast your spells. Rangers and thieves want to be mobile AND protected, so medium (actually light, since light is basically no armor) is what they use.

I played a ton of DnD and Skyrim before ever picking up an MMO and i was immediately surprised when i started GW2 and discovered my warrior couldn’t wear light or medium armor.

I never played GW1 but i’ve been with GW2 since launch and i had to look up “fellblade” to see what it was. I had no idea it was supposed to be a special HoM skin since it looks so plain. I’ve seen people with it in game and always assumed it was a level 30 karma blue skin or something.

“Look to the skies…”

Reminds me of a line from an old 50s science fiction movie, The Thing From Another World.

“Watch the skies – everywhere! Keep looking. Keep watching the skies.”

The ‘thing’ in that movie was a humanoid carrot. Do we have anything like a humanoid carrot in GW2? Hmm…

I just watched john carpenter’s remake again the other day. Now THAT kind of “thing” would be interesting.

I check out that artist’s deviant art page all the time. Now HE draws some real norn women.

Divinity’s Reach has a serious renaissance vibe to it and clockwork fits right with that. The sudden introduction of these automatons, however, clearly points to something sinister in this LS arc though….

To some extent that is acceptable, I do understand that divinity reach already employs clockwork in their garden, however I still strongly feel that the humans should remain the mid-evil race, and the Norms the spiritual. If that should falter, it will lose its elements of fantasy and no longer be the same game.

Human culture, judging by Divinity’s Reach, looks more advanced that medieval for sure, with a much stronger renaissance bent. Norn are actually much closer to a genuine medieval aesthetic. In any case, clockwork automatons are a strong fantasy archetype, dating back to classic greek mythology where Haphaestus made clockwork women to be his assistants and Talos the automaton patrolled the beaches. The ancients employed a number of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic clockwork effigies in their temples as well, so you could easily argue that clockwork aesthetic pre-datea medieval europe by 1,500 years.

But does this mean all classes apart from Mesmer and Warrior will find themselves unwelcome in every dungeon group instead of just Citadel of Flame path 1?

No, because different dungeons call for different strategies and you can’t just blitz through all of them as easily as COF p1.

Exactly. Sometimes you want a thief to stealth the party or more reflects.

I’m not a big farmer myself, I cant stand the repetition, but nor do I have the time to run through Arah and other difficult dungeons once a day.

Here’s the thing about people who complain when they remove a farm from the game: the valid point farmers make is that usually when anet removes a farming spot from the game, they do nothing to add any other way to make money. Here, however, they actually added a bunch of alternate ways (i.e. every dungeon path in the game) to make money.

Instead of grinding CoF, now you can spend that time doing a rotation of other dungeons. With some of these paths giving up to 3g (!) guaranteed for one run, i have no doubt farmers will find an optimal rotation of select paths that will give at least as much as CoF farming. The upside is that you will get more people doing a more diverse set of content.

Norn Male & Female, disproportionate?

in Norn

Posted by: panzer.6034

panzer.6034

You answered that exceedingly simple question like a true politician. Avoid the question, restate your tired argument.

A direct answer is “like a true politician”? One is a norn because she’s taller. That’s it. She’s isn’t particularly more robust at all and, in armor + running around, you’d never know which is which if they were the same height in game.

The tallest female human is dwarfed by the tallest female norn, even with the bigger body type for the female human and the slimmer body type for the norn.

The female norn and the female human on average for body types is far and away closer in proportion that the male norn male human. This is as plain as day. The males can be hulks compared to their human counterparts and the females are only slightly broader in some aspects. There isn’t a shred of parity there and if you can’t admit this then “you’re dense or you’re intentionally denying the obvious to argue.”

If you were to scale up a human female to norn size, she would look like a norn… as would any male human scaled to norn size.

You’re half right. You can easily make a taller human female look like a norn female but never in a million years is a male human going to pass as the hulk (of which there is completely zero female analog).

Tallest male hulkian norn is in a league of his own because he’s a norn. He’s massive. But guess who in this group won’t be confused for his short kids?

It would be the female norn.

“He’s in a league of his own”
You’re proving my point.

You’re arguing that if you had a school bus, an SUV and 2 compact cars, that the school bus and SUV aren’t disproportionate to each other because the SUV is bigger than a compact cars.

She’s altogether bigger then and towers over the two humans and can at least meet the male norn to his upper body, just under his head at the neck or chest.

Male and female norn are relatively proportionate to each other. No one else comes close. They make the rest of us small. They’re exaggerated hominids, giantesque.

Your whole example says nothing about them being proportionate to each other, it just says that they are both taller than a human. Shaq and a t-rex both tower over an average human, but it doesn’t mean they are in the same league as far as size.
