Invulnerable NPC at WvW Camp

yup. What Ayrilana and Olba said.

Each supervisor/lord of the camps, towers and keeps have an invulernable buff that lasts for 5 minutes after being captured (Righteous Indignation)This prevents the other team from flipping the camp/keep/tower right after you do. Your server gets to keep it for at least 5 minutes. Sometimes you’ll see in chat that X tower, or camp has Y amount of time left on RI. This is what they are referring to.

There are some third party apps/websites that allow you to see what the RI countdown (if any) is present on any of the camps, towers, or keeps. VERY useful for roaming/havocing.

As far as resistance I read it as you’ll be immune to any condis during the duration, and if there was any remaining, they would continue as normal. Which would mean that they could still be applied during the time resistance was up, but have no effect until resistance ran out. But I could be wrong.

You are correct.

WOOT!!!!

You already have the response for these two questions in the blog post :

While resistance is up, you ignore all effects of all conditions applied on you. This includes damage AND forced movement.

Taunt, is the exact opposite of fear with two tweaks :

  • you are forced to run towards your opponent instead of running away
  • you can still use your auto-attacks whereas you couldn’t with fear. Stun breaks work the same.

Sorry, my wording was bad on the Resistance question. What I’m wondering is whether Resistance will put Conditions on hold, or simply make you immune to them, it’s really hard to tell from the wording. It says a Fear would resume when Resistance comes off, but that could mean whatever’s left of a Fear resumes, or it could mean the Fear was actually on hold during the Resistance. Immunity seems more likely, but that will be a huge blow to already problematic Condition weaknesses.

As for Taunt, I get how it works, but it calls Resistance a Boon and Slow a Condition, but it calls Taunt a Status Effect. I thought Fear was a Condition. Are Status Effects something new, or just something I didn’t know had a name?

Status effects are things like daze, stun, knock downs, moa, etc.

As far as resistance I read it as you’ll be immune to any condis during the duration, and if there was any remaining, they would continue as normal. Which would mean that they could still be applied during the time resistance was up, but have no effect until resistance ran out. But I could be wrong.

Well thats the beauty of Google Docs. It can be edited and retain the same link. So all the posters need to do is introduce their character with a link to the document. Just be sure to have some outline in the OP to avoid confusion and to keep things neat and organized.

I would think most people wanting to do such things would do their best to keep it in order. But creating a new sub-forum with hundreds of single threads about each individual character would get quite messy quite fast.

I actually feel like even the PvPers in GW2 are better than any other MMO I’ve tried PvP in. I had to laugh- the other day, my team was getting STOMPED by an embarrassing amount, and someone from the other team popped in on map chat, “I think it’s great that you decided to try PvP on your first day playing! I hope you stick with it!”

Yeah, you’re going to run into people who are verbally abusive. But I’ve found considerably fewer in GW2, myself.

I’ve actually recently begun writing down the names of people who verbally abused me, or someone else for the heck of it, you’d be surprised by how many I’ve got in just three hours today. It’s saddening honestly, I never understood the need to name call, but I guess that’s just me.

It’s honestly more of a psychological/emotional issue than anything. The same way there are bullys in real life, people who are just mean and nasty. They don’t like themselves or have a type of “filter” which they view the world as hostile and out to get them, or one of a hundred other reasons, so they act like kittens to compensate. In the end though just let them be. Any response only fuels them and confirms their “fears” about why they do what they do.

Yeah, pretty great community here. Had a random person gift me a precursor. Had other people just give out stuff on a whim. Seen people helped and trained in dungeons, world bosses, WvW, PvP, leveling, map completion, etc.

Of course there are some who are kittens and won’t give anyone the time of day, but skip those people. Don’t let a few bad apples ruin the game for you. I very rarely respond to attacking PMs, or insulting/whining map chat. It only encourages them. Just turn off the channel and ignore them.

Also if swearing bothers you, you can turn on the swearing filter in game so you don’t have to see it.

CONFIRMED Weapons for Classes?

My warrior currently runs dual axes, so I’m not sure why that would be a specialization.

I think it’s highly likely that engineers will get hammers, and I agree that the profession with the shield does appear to be a mesmer, but seeing as this hasn’t been officially confirmed, I’d take it with a grain of salt.

I’d like to see a few classes get more than one new weapon. Sword- and axe- off-hand weapons for thieves? Yes, please. Maces for eles and engis would also be nice.

Wait what? Dual axes with warrior!? Are you mad!? You can’t say that in here! It’s not MC (Meta correctness).!

In any event, I am curious to see what weapon(s) for warrior. My best guess would be either daggers or pistols, and leaning heavily toward daggers.

My Charr warrior runs Hambow, so it’s okay. My asura dual wields two super-skinned axes (from SAB) and is the BEST.

I know I love dual axes. But have had many a discussion about how much of a DPS loss it is, how it much better other OH weapons are. My human warrior runs around with 2 frostfangs (1 original, the other ascended skinned). It’s pretty epic looking.

I generally run necro in PvP, and don’t really have much of a problem with it. While on point necros can be pretty good. Lots of AoE from staff/scepter/dagger and wells. Lich form is awesome for on point fights, DS with the fear is great for pushing people off point.

Of course I run straight condis and don’t have many issues. Of course I can still get outplayed, but in general necros do provide some great pressure at the very least. There are some weakness with necros, but I don’t feel they are enough to make them horrible and useless.

What's faster for leveling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

EoTM is fastest when compared to map completion.

Now, even faster than EoTM, is grinding yellow mobs with an XP booster, killstreak booster, and Celebration booster active. (And food for a tiny bit extra).

You have to migrate across maps because the bonus XP has diminishing returns based on how recently the mobs were killed. So you couldn’t just find a group of Moas and kill them over and over. You have to keep moving in order to maximize bonus XP.

I say to kill yellow mobs because most people ignore them since they are passive so there is a better chance they haven’t been killed recently, but red mobs have just as much a chance to give good bonus XP.

This is true. With an exp booster I was able to farm yellow mobs in WvW to very great effect. Most of them are near the edges of the map, and most people ignor them. Each kill gave about 2k exp with the exploration bonus. Had a friend with me, and with his celebration buff, and an exp booster was getting around 3k per kill. Thats about as much as a lower level event.

Nice!

I did send an email, as direction in the CToU, and did recieve a response. Basically, what we are trying to do should be covered in the CToU and we should be fine. As long as (as pointed out various times) we are not trying to sell it, or trying to make it an offical product.

ya, my philosophy is Grind coin the easiest way then buy from the TP the stuff that is hard to grind.
Time:Coin, trying to farm lodestones directly is poor time management.

(sw i guess) or set up a routine of farming t6 material nodes each time you log in.

It’s true while farming coin is easier and faster, but buying everything off the TP only results in higher prices. But as the OP said, grinding out the mats themselves isn’t a problem.

As far as time management, its very subjective. If you enjoy playing the game, and enjoy farming mats, then finding the best places to do that is the best use of ones time. Same for grinding gold. However, if you don’t like doing countless dungeon runs, and never want to set foot in another dungeon again, running dungeons would be poor time managment. Because in the limited time one has to play each day, one should focus on maximizing their “fun”. There is no “wrong” way to go about getting what you want, it just depends on what you like to do in game.

For me, farming mats for my legendary was really fun. Of course I still sold what I already had, and bought some, but spent a majority of the time farming them. Was it efficient? not really. But I still had a blast.

There is one thing still very confusing to me about this blog post.

It sounds like the Revenant gets way less customization than other classes. As per usual your first five skills are determined by your weapon, but unlike other classes they said your second five skills are determined by your legend. Are they determined only by your legend? As in, you pick a legend and get five skills? Or will there be more selectable loadout of skills within each legend? And if so how many?

From what I gathered it seemed that each legend would have a set of skills to pick from. And the set of skills available changes from legend to legend. In the picture you can see the little arrows above the skills indicating they can be changed individually. As far as how many, that remains unknown. But I can imagine it would be enough to have some diversity, but not so many that you need to spend 300,000 skills points to unlock them all. (unless they reduced the cost of each skill to make up for the amount there will be per legend.)

What's faster for leveling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Depends on how you want to level. Do you want to get traits along the way and learn your profession? or do you want to ride the train and just get to 80 as quickly as possible?

With the first you have a chance to unlock traits and skill points which are needed to buy traits. Plus you also have a chance to gear up your character along the way.

In the latter, you follow the blob, with no traits, little chances of gear, and almost no skill points but you can level up fairly quickly.

Both ways offer a different method, but IMO it’s better to do map completion. Although EotM may be a bit faster, but in the end you’ll end up working harder to get your traits and gear.

Server merging

in WvW

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

This should be moved over to WvW forums, and merged with the other server threads (See what I did there? :P)

In any event, I don’t feel that merging servers would actually provide an answer. If they were merged, there is still no insentive to stay with your current merged server. People move to have a better WvW experience on higher tiers. So servers get merged, and people still leave to get out of the lower tier they may be on. Also queue times would be rediculous. Even if they raised the server cap per map. You would have at least 2 times the amount of players, and in some cases even higher. And then, if population caps per map are raised, what would that do to performance? It some cases it gets pretty bad already with so many people, and so much going on, lag really becomes an issue. Now double that with merged servers.

I’ve said it once before and will say it again. I don’t feel there is anything Anet can do about people transferring and server populations. It’s up to the WvW players, commanders and guilds to keep the players they have and try to provide a good enough experience to retain players, instead of allowing them to transfer.

It would certainly be much easier to sticky such a thread than to create a whole sub-forum.

It would be pretty neat to see peoples character stories written out. But it would fall under community creations (as it would be classified as fan-fic.) and I think could actually generate some really cool stuff.

I would be less concerned with the global economic ramifications than the fact that adding a vendor value isn’t an elegant solution, you should get something for that material that isn’t 2c, because 2c never feels good and just adds to the money supply.

Of course you can always buy them on the TP if you don’t want to grind for them.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Phys:

Ok (for the sake of argument) lets say that ascended cloth armor is not fair, and downright mean.

What should be done? Increase the amount of silk in the game? Decrease the amount of silk needed per bolt? Decrease the amount of bolts needed for damask?

Imcreasing the amount of silk will have long term consequences on the whole economy. My guess would be bad ones at that. A depreciation of cloth in general, exotics, rares, etc. And who knows what else. Which leads to more in game money which leads to other bad things.

decrease the amounts needed? What about those who spent the time and money? Does it get refunded? Or is it just too bad for them? But thats not fair either Plus what would happen to the market? Would silk go back to being worthless? What would happen to the supply? How would it effect other mats, and craftable items?

Of course this is all based on some supposed idea that everything MUST be fair or its broken. The only people who seem to take issue with the system as it is are those who feel that because they are at a disadvantage, that the system itself must change to accommodate them. The truth is that the system is not likely to change anytime soon, and certainly not because certain people feel that they can’t get what they want withput having to put in the time and effort, and work under the perameters established by the class of their choice.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

pdavis.8031

a percieved problem is a real problem. They create these systems to engage and encourage people to continue to play.

the fact that people arent satisfied with the pacing is a real problem
the amount of people who say screw this ascended crap is real problem. Its not supposed to be the type of thing people reject.

the system is poorly designed,
Why exactly is the design such that someone has to work harder to achieve the same goal for a different charachter?

why is a cloth person taking more days, gathering more base items, that take longer to gather, than another class? does this make sense from a design standpoint?

you rolled necromancer, so it will take you an extra 7 days to get armor? and you will have to work twice as hard to get it?

Having a couple of light classes (necro and ele) it doesn’t seem “unfair” to me at all. Sure I need to work a bit harder, and take a few extra days to get what I need. It it so broken and such a poor design that it makes the game unbearable? Not in the slightest. I knew what I was getting into what I rolled those classes. I don’t think of myself as a special snowflake that deserves anything in-game at all.

Also a percieved problem and a real problem are 2 very different things. One is the idea that something is broken and needs to be fixed because it doesn’t line up with a particular point of view. A real problem is something that everyone can agree is broke and needs to be fixed. It also has no idealogical attachments that it is broken.

And we forget that it was designed this way on purpose. Using metrics and numbers that we don’t have access to. So while it may appear that the amount of damask (and thus silk) is way off balance. We have no idea how much silk is entering the game at any given point, and how much is being destroyed. If we had access to those numbers it may just be that it is actually a balance as the input of silk is far greater than we think it is.

We only see the results of the system itself. We don’t see all the factors it takes or how it works. It’s one thing to say that it’s broken and unfair only seeing the results, and quite another to see how the system works, what factors are determined, and what not and then making a determination as to whether or not it’s broken.

There is a difference between a full revamp of the gathering system (silk from lave, etc.) and adding some generic cloth and leather nodes (like the home instance ones) into the game. Never said it could not be MADE to make sense but that would be a significant amount of work.

As pointed out, the REAL reason they don’t exist is the economic one. Just because individual players may feel they are “short” of Silk does not mean the overall material supply NEEDs more Silk and “cloth nodes” (no matter how they get put in the game) would certainly increase the overall supply in game.

i dont think the complaint is that they are short on silk, its that they dont feel they have a realistic method for obtaining it in a timely fashion.

essentially people trying to get ascended feel like they are supposed to get 300 silk scraps per day. They decide they dont want to spend their gold for it so they try to get it through gameplay, it takes them 2-3 hours, and they think that sucks.

they wonder why 6 gold worth of materials costs 2-3 hours of gameplay to obtain.

The current system essentially forces them to market, and encourages them to do whatever gold grind they have probably done to death by now, and are somewhat bored of.

that said i agree its unlikely to change, its something that carries development time and risk

So basically it’s not a “real” problem, but a “percieved” problem. The players don’t want to spend the time actually doing what it takes to get it, because it “takes to much time” and “it’s not cost effective”. So they turn to the market, for such an in demand item, and complain the costs are too high.

Of course the costs are high, it’s a high demand item that many people feel they “need” to go to the TP in order to get it. Where each purchase only increases the prices. Which in turn causes more people to think the only way to aquire it is to farm gold and buy it off the TP, because it’s more “efficient”. Ad Infinitum.

So basically, it’s not that silk uses 3 scraps per bolt, and 100 bolts per damask, it’s that player “feel” they need to have it sooner rather than later. And that in order to get it sooner they need to run a bunch of dungeons per day in order to by the increasing price of silk. Which is the very crux of the “issue”. People don’t want to do the work to get it. Some of us have speculated that there around around 3000 sources of silk in game (it’s not confirmed, but a very reasonable number looking at a combination of bags, salvage items, and light armor.)

This may prove informative: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-content-terms-of-use/

Although it says you can use Guild Wars intellectual property for personal use, it does state you can not use it to create games, etc. without prior permission.

You may be taking a chance.

Good luck.

The only thing I can find in reference to using any Guild Wars content is here:

Can I write a story, book, poem, musical composition, etc., based on your game?
We appreciate the creative processes and the passion of our fans, but it’s essential that we maintain commercial control over our product. Therefore, commercial productions are all sourced from ArenaNet and/or NCsoft.

However, as long as such usage follows the parameters listed above, we do permit the use of our game world and our characters in literary or musical pieces intended for personal use only, such as those posted on or released through a non-profit website. We do not permit the unauthorized use of our game world, our characters, or any other elements of our game in any form that involves profit or commercial benefit, such as novels, short stories, articles, unauthorized contest or competition entries, screenplays, action figures, theatrical productions, or other adaptations of our game.

•The content must be used in a non-commercial context for private, personal use only
•You must include all copyright and other notices associated with the content
•You acknowledge and agree that no title nor any other form of ownership to the content has been or will be transferred to you from ArenaNet nor from anyone else
•You agree that you will not alter, disassemble, decompile, reverse-engineer or in any other way modify the content
•You agree that ArenaNet has the right to require removal of our content at any time, for any reason

But I would need more confirmation before we move too far into this project.

Hi,

As you may have seen, some of us are trying to get together to put together a fan made Guild Wars tabletop RPG. We want to create a new system to do this. This will be a free project, with NO monetary gain, and freely distributed. However, there is a concern about the “legal” aspects of it. I personally feel that as long as the system uses the Open Game License, and made available we should be fine. I am just wondering if there were any legal matters concerning the copyrighted works, characters, names, places, history, etc. of Anet in relation to Guild Wars that would prevent us from doing this.

I understand that Guild Wars art, music, fanfic, etc. is something that is “protected”. I have seen some dev posts concerning 3D printed characters from the game, and IIRC it was ok to do so as long as it was for “personal” use, and not for profit.

Would such an endevor also be “protected” as long as it’s for “personal/community” use, and not to be sold? Any dev clarification on this would be most helpful. Thanks!!!

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

It makes no sense that it takes 100 silk per damask.

Why is anet OK with one ascended item being over triple the price of the other ones?

It does make sense though. Silk, as stated above, was way over supplied. Having 100 bolts, and 3 scraps per, makes a very effective silk sink. And there is about 3000 different sources for silk, the stuff is super easy to come by. Even more so with gear weighting loot on the light armor professions. However, people dont want to farm it, so they look to the TP to speed up the process, which is fine, but leads to an increase of prices on the TP. If you farm it, its not nearly as expensive, but does take time. Time that people arent willing to spend.

I didnt factor in each different stat per armor. So 23 different stat types over 6 different skins adds in an additional 828 different pieces, just for light dropped armor. And of course you have about the same for crafted armor, and all the named light armor. So that makes up for the rest, so 3000 isnt that All that far fetched.

Wow plenty of sources for silk…why do people say its so hard to get!?

A lot of players do not like buying everything off the tp. They like going out and getting themselves directly. That’s where the issue lies.

True, but even with just dropped armor there is still tons of silk available. Also in most of the discussions about silk, its those wanting to buy it off the TP that are complaining the most about prices and amounts needed.

In any event it would intresting to see on average per day how much silk is coming in and out.

no, many of your sources dont give an average of two scraps by far.
and crafted is a loss on silk, it always used up more coming into existence than it salavged into.
order armor… costs gold, you get back silver

many of your sources are really horrible sources

While crafted IS a loss, if you are buying it and salvaging it solely for the scraps, or making it and salvaging it for the scraps. The point is that it is A source of silk. The discussion wasn’t whether or not they were good sources, or cost effective, but that they DO produce silk. And most of those bags have a chance to drop 1-3 scraps. So even with the RNG, one can still assume and average of 2 silk scraps per bag. Also the salvage items have a silk drop rate of 1-3 scraps per. So again, an average of 2.

Granted there are some large/heavy bags that don’t provide silk at all. But even then there still is ~150 sources of silk in the game.

My last post made me wonder about this:

How many different loot tables include silk scraps?

With all the different kinds of armor, containers etc around, it should be over 1000 different sources easily.

Well for starters according to the wiki. Silk scraps come from:
Bag of Alchemical Materials
Bag of Theoretical Materials
Bag of Alliance Supplies
Large Bags
Heavy Bags
Level 58-80 light armor
Discarded Garment
Rag
Torn Rag
Torn Garment
Beautiful Knit Hat
Beautiful Knit Sock
Beautiful Knit Sweater

Thats 12 sources not including armor.

Armor:
Feathered and Masqurade armor. (crafted): 2 sets: 12 pieces
Dungeon Armor: 8 sets, at 6 per set: 48 pieces
Dropped armor: 6 sets: 36 pieces.
Order Armor: 1 set: 6 pieces (per character).
(I left out karma and WvW armor as you can’t salvage those.)

So we are looking at a total of at least 114 sources. And if each source has a chance to drop an average of 2 scraps. Thats 228 scraps on average for using each source only once.

Thats not bad at all.

Edit: Forgot the different types of large and heavy bags. 15 of each. So there 42 sources aside from armor. So 156 sources, for an average of 312 scraps for using each source once.

So the conversation about silk and TP prices and amount needed for Damask has cropped up again. Although it is understood the why, and that it is working as intended, the question still comes up from time to time.

So currently, according to GW2 Spidy, there is a “surplus” of about 138,881 silk scraps in the TP alone. During the research phase when making the decision to increase the amount of silk needed for bolts of silk, was such a surplus planned and accounted for? Is this a good amount of surplus to have on hand, based on the demand of silk in general? And does such a surplus reflect the current prices on the TP and what people are willing to buy and sell for?

I think the surplus you are seeing (Supply minus Demand) on the tp has very little value in terms of defining a proper balance of supply and demand. Alot of buy orders and listings are from inactive or banned accounts and the demand side can be rigged by putting in vendor value buy orders.

John probably looks at daily silk generated, daily silk destroyed and overall silk supply within the economy. And to determine overall silk supply will be a hard task anyways, i guess, even with his tools. It might be easy to get a report on how much silk scraps and bolts are stashed away in players, bags, banks and collection tabs but what about secondary sources?

How about all that silk stored in light armor pieces, salvage items and containers?

Yeah I figured the Tp wouldn’t be an accurate representation of a surplus, but it is A starting point.

Also I don’t think you can count silk in light armor, salvage items and containers. It’s an unknown number that cannot be calculated until the item is salvaged or opened. Containers generally give 0-3 scraps, light armor is the same, and salvage items, also has a chance to drop gossamer instead of silk. And that number changes with each salvage, which kit is used, and the openers MF.

The events are in the red circles….der der der

Which events are you talking about? Vine Wrath? In a huge red circle on the map showing the area where the event is? Or the AoE circles when the boss launches a particular attack?

The first only shows the area, you can’t die if you are not at the boss, generally at the middle of the circle. And the latter means you need to move.

Jump into the red circle with 300 other players and hope you are one of the 5 that survive.

You do know that red circles are bad right? If you are jumping into a red circle you are doing it wrong. Sorry. Avoid the red circles, live, continue to hurt the boss. Profit.

About the content. I actually enjoy it. I love Silverwastes, love the story (PS and otherwise) and enjoy the game as a whole. I certainly didn’t find any of the content lacking. Maybe thats just me though.

John Smith (Anets economy guy) has stated several times that silk is working as intended and by design, and yes they do monitor it, and found this is be a good long term solution.

People are forgetting that silk is still super easy to come by. You can get silk from almost every mob in all level 58-80 zones. Either in “pure” form from bags, or from salvaging light armor, or salvagable items. Heck I was able to get 60 scraps (20 bolts) just from salvaging alone doing an hour in Silverwastes. At that rate it will take ~5 hours to make 1 spool of silk weaving thread. Now using all the karma you can get farming SW, you can easily use the conversion to get the linen, wool, and cotton. So you can make 1 bolt of damask in a few days (depending on your play time) just farming all the mats needed. It’s not really that bad.

Ye, by design silk costs 5 times more than mithril and like 20 times more than a leather and you need it 3 times more than mithril. By his design sure. But the next time he’ll change it, it’s also gonna be by design. Everything they do is by design.

Precisely. However, I took your comment to imply that the change was unintended and/or a mistake. The cost of the silk is solely based on what people are willing to pay for it. As of now (according to GW2 spidy) there is a surplus of 138,881 silk scraps in the TP alone. Thats not inlcuding any people have in their banks at any given time. The stuff is FAR from rare and hard to aquire. Although it is very desirable, there is no reason the price couldn’t reflect that. However people are still willing to pay 2s 6c for it. Now if everyone in the game all got together and said “we are not going to pay more than 80c for a scrap of silk and set the buy and sell orders at 80c” Then the price will change to 80c per scrap.

Anet doesn’t control the prices on the TP. Players do. You can argue that Anet does influence the prices through the drop rate, but in the end it comes down to what players are willing to buy and sell for. And silk, being so common, has no reason to be at the price that it is. It is the current price simply because of what people are willing to pay for it. Nothing more.

surplus has to do with a budget, how do you determine if the supply is more than is needed exactly?

That is a great question. One that none us can ever really answer with any certainty. I am sure JS has the numbers and metrics to determine how much silk is in “rotation” at any given time, and how much is needed to maintain a healty surplus. It would be interesting to find out though.

How can we changed WvW to prevent the blob

in WvW

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

I honestly don’t think there is any game change mechanics that can ever be implemented that will change the blob/zerg way of playing. It more of a player “problem” than anything. (same with gear/build preferences. Anet doesn’t require anyone to have a certain gear stat in order to be able to do anything in the game, with the exception of high level fractals)

So it’s up to the players to come up with a different strategy in dealing with/creating blobs.

However I do like that they are addressing the defense problem. No one defends much because it’s easier and more rewarding to flip it back than it is to defend.

Anet’s economy guy needs to wake up from his winter sleep and corrects crafting formulas. Changing soft wood plank to 4 logs was maybe a good temporary solution when the game was launched and everyone and their mothers were gathering that but it’s a long time since then. Same with silk, it takes more than a stack to get one bolt of damask, it’s hilarious to think they even monitor it. Or their charts have a resolution of 2 years. Yikes…

Bag/bank space should cost gold, not gems

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Very interesting discussion.

Just want to make a few points.

Concerning the “race” analogy.
If both driver A and driver B are limited to paying $1000 dollars for their car, and that car must meet certain specifications, than both cars are going to be the same, and not offer a statisical advantage over the other. Then the race will be determined by skill and skill alone.

Concerning bag space and “pay to win”
While having extra bag space certainly is nice to have, it offers ZERO advantage in competative play. (i.e. WvW, PvP). Does it mean that player A (with an extra bag slot) can potentially earn more gold over player B (with no extra bag slot)? Theoretically yes, because they have to spend less time at a vendor. However, player A will have to spend more time at a vendor than player B. Why? Because they have more stuff. The only difference is when both players need to visit a vendor. For example. Both players run AC P3. At the end of the run, player B needs to go to the vendor to clear their inventory before running AC P1. Player A can just go straight into P1. So while player B is clearing their inventory, player A is 1/2 of the way through P1. Player B jumps into P1. Both finish the run. Now both players have to visit a vendor to clear their inventory. Player B is able to finish quicker (as they have less stuff to sell) and is able to jump into CoF P1 while player A is still clearing his inventory. And so on and so forth.

In the end, did player A make more money than player B? No, because they both were able to do the same amount of dungeon runs. Did player A need to visit the vendor after each run? No. But they did spend twice as long at the vendor than player B.

Does that mean it’s pay to win? Not in the slightest by any definition. The only advantage player A had over player B is when they needed to clear out their inventory.

Finally, concerning using gold to by bag/bank slots.

I don’t feel that using purely gold to by a convience item is the right way to go. If you feel you must have them upgrades, then you can spend that gold and convert to gems. “But with the gem exchange, it’s expensive.” True, but then you need to ask yourself is it worth spending the time in-game for a convienience item? If yes, than great!! Work hard and get the upgrade! If not, then don’t worry about it, you are not going to be limited in what you can or cannot do in game without it. Heck you can still solo Arah all the paths without having any inventory bags if you wanted to. (you’ll miss out on all the loot if you did, but it’s still possible.)

Necromancers have massive direct damage!?

Yeah not so much.

They have no bursts, limited cleaves, and very limited offensive boons.
They also have no escapes, are slow, and every skill has a giant tell and super slow projectiles.

Conditions can be dangerous, but mostly rely on AoEs which can be avoided and all conditions can be removed through cleanses, which almost every class has access to at least a few. Terror mancers (inflicting damage when causing fear) can be a bit of a problem if you dont have stability (which almost everyone also has easy access to).
Mions might be able to provide quite a bit of damage, but relies 100% on AI and easily avoided if you know what you are doing. Death shroud might be problematic, but again with slow projectiles, large tells, and a slow auto attack they can be overcome. And lich form can also be very powerful, but has a short duration and all of the above problems.

They do have decent survivability though, but not so much where they are overpowered and game breaking. Basically (almost) everything a necro can do, other classes can also do and some better.

Basically it sounds like you may have met some good players and just stood there and let them roll over you, or you’ve never encountered a necro before.

TL;DR: Necros are not game breaking, it seems if its a L2P issue if anything.

Why is Tyria so special?

in Lore

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Tyria is “special” in the same way Middle Earth, Hyrule, Tristam, [insert particular country] is special.

The main reason is that it creates a familiar local and environment to build the story. While you certaintly can create a story that encompasses the whole world, it gets more and more complex. (See Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series.)

Basically it’s just easier to write it that way, and in a game setting it removes the need to create a bunch of background history, cultures, maps, etc.
