Lore clarification needed for Lega of the Foe

I think you’re mistaking a mention that stated that the fractals didn’t show the future.

The Mists since the first bit of lore we got on it was stated outright to connect all places and all times – past, present, and future – together.

In fact, the Infinity Ball called upon that aspect of the Mists – memories of the past, present and future (specifically the future) – as it is implied in an interview during China’s release. That the possible future that the Grand High Sovereign came from was a memory of the Mists.

That may be the case, and I was mistaken. However all the info I see on the Mists refer to histories, including an interview with Jeff Grubb. (wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Mists).
In any event, the wiki on The Legacy of the Foe Fire says: “The Foefire is an event that happened in Ascalon in 1090 AE, although the setting of the battle is inaccurate since Ascalon was never sieged from the sea by the charr, as the map implies. However, this may be only caused due to influence of the Mists binding worlds and events of history together.”

While the wiki isnt totally reliable, it is at least a starting point, amd does make some sort of sense.

The way i understand things, is that the mists are reflections of different realities and histories of different worlds. So the Legacy of the Foe Fire is a reflection of a possible past Also IIRC i thought that the Mists are only reflections or echos of the past, or present, and dont show the future..

trinity system

Sylent:

You don’t NEED full dps beserker gear to do ANY of the content. Thats the difference. You can successfully complete all content with full Nomads or Clerics if you wanted to. The “zerker” requirement is established by players, and players only. Its faster yes, but not a requirement at all. Don’t want to use it? Dont join a zerger only speed run. Its that simple. The content is designed to be able to do it without having being forced to have certian roles. That’s what a trinity system is. You need to have X,Y and Z or you WILL fail. However even with a full DPS group in gw2, there are VERY few events that will fail if you don’t have enough DPS and dungeons aren’t one of them.

Yeah, don’t trip about it. Just block and report and move on. They can try to report for hacking, and after an investigation shows that you weren’t hacking, then they risk gettting banned for filing a false report.

I didn’t know it was broken…so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it….

Invis is more annoying than anything. It can be countered with AoEs, well timed dodges. (I was actually able to pull it off ONCE. Started counting as soon as thief went invis (3 secs.) and then dodged. Evaded his backstab and took him out. He started calling me a noob too :P But my point is, it’s annoying yes, but not OP and certainly not game breaking.

P.S.: I generally play either Necro or Ranger in PVP

Ok having read (most of) the thread, I feel it’s time for me to add my thoughts.

While there are many great reasons NOT to have P2P trading (TP fees, WTS spam, scamming, etc.) and all those have been covered in detail, what I am still wondering is WHY people would want this feature. Sure it can be done in such a way that 100% prevents scamming, and be able to reduce spamming (not 100% but a trade channel would help keep it minimized). But why? Is it easier to trade X item to a player directly? Or sell them item on the TP, collect your money, then buy what you are looking for? What are the benefits of P2P trading that cannot be found within the TP system? (gold sinks, taxes, fees aside. Functional benefits).

I for one, can’t think of a functional reason why P2P trading would work better. It seems to me to be more of a hassle than anything.

Seriously though, my current goal is full rabid ascended for my necro. Including trinkets. I have full ascended and a legendary for my warrior, so my necro is next. Long term goals are full ascended for all 6 of my characters, with maybe a legendary for each. Not sure about the legendaries though, depends on how the precursor collection works out with the expansion.

Necro dungeon issue

OP:
Have you already been running with the necro? As he is a friend, and you seem to have already been doing things…

And while running with the necro, have you failed a dungeon path, wiped multiple times, or not been able to get past certain content?

If not, then why bother? No point in excluding your friend because he doesn’t have an “optimal” build or bring enough useful boons or utility to the table.

If you are having a problem, than considering asking him to roll another character may not by out of order, but might make your friend feel useless and unwanted.

In the end all that matters of you are all having fun. If not, than maybe its not just the friend that needs to change…

Is this another “giff mounts” thread in disguise ?

However .. no thanks. If you think its fun to wast more time with traveling than
with playing .. try Lotro .. and tell me how long it takes to bore you to death when
you sit the next time 15 minutes on a horse to travel from one town to another.

And for “authenticity” .. why don’t you ask that your character have to sleep
every now and then and you can watch them for 6-8 hours sleeping ?

I have played a game like that once. I can’t remember what it was called, but it was an old DOS game. Where your chacter had to eat and drink every so often. Had to sleep, or would get fatigued and pass out. It was an interesting mechanic, but made for extreamly boring game play. Of course while you slept it would skip until you woke up, but still.

GW2: Great MMO - Buy It!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Agreed. Great game and anyone wanting something different should check it out.

However I will just point out that not having a trinity is not a bad thing. (of course both statements are opinions based on personal preferences.) Each class can bring support to the table. Granted some do it better than others. But there is no reason that you cannot play a support/healing warrior, or thief if you wanted to. And thats the beauty of it.

As far as “you must play DPS”. Not exactly true. You can complete any and all content with other builds aside from DPS. But DPS does offer the fastest and quickest, if you know what you are doing, way to do it. There is a certain mindset, more prevaliant in the forums than in game, that says you must be full DPS or you are a bad player. Thats not true at all. You have the option to play which ever build you want to fit your play style. And you have the option to choose specifically who you do it with. Just play with those who are more like-minded, or don’t care, as long as you are comfortable and you are having fun.

Trying to join a full DPS group while having a more tanky set up is setting yourself up to be harrased, insulted and kicked. Because they want to play a certain way, with certain builds. They don’t have to cater to you, and you don’t have to cater to them.

In any event, check it out. Join a guild or three and have fun! Hope to see you in game!

Very interesting.

But just a thought (not to try to start anything, or bash anyones theories or ideas.) what if all these “connections” (directly or indirectly) are just our perception. With the unveil of the nature of Sylvari it seems that we want to find some connection between Mordremoth and the nightmare. Therefore, every piece of dialogue, ambient noise, plant, etc. has some connection, or connotation.

It gives new meaning to things that we once thought were pretty self explanitory, and basic. Of course that may very well be the case. With the new information we can now see that such things were actually hints to what we know now. If so, than it was BRILLIANT writing on Anets part. Throwing in hints and clues years before the actual events, and the kicker? NO ONE PICKED UP ON IT! It doesn’t get much better than that really.

Just an observation. Carry on….

I’ve always thought WPs being so prevalent was seriously story and immersion breaking. It’s like the age old question of “Why didn’t Gandalf just fly the ring in to Mount Doom with the great eagles?” Well for one, because he couldn’t, the movies follow the books, in the books those eagles weren’t exactly at his beck and call, they were allies no more prone to fighting Sauron head on than anyone else. But more importantly, because it would have made for an AWFUL STORY had that option been available or taken.

Just for kicks and giggles, there is a theory as to why Gandalf didn’t use the eagles.
He wanted to, but got "killed" by the Balrog

Or ANet could actually put in some effort to make other builds playable, to fix their non-functioning stat system, their skill-less binary evasion system, and branch out more than the handful of fight mechanics (all of which have only one response, dodge) they use designing every… single… encounter.

Why even have a build system if all content requires the same build?

Theres been countless discussions on making different builds/gear more viable. However in order to do that they’ll need to completely redo the entire combat system. However, they did do some changes with Silverwastes, with having some of the Mordrem be more resistant against physical damage, making Condi builds much more valuable, however with the condi cap, it’s still not as effective as it could be.

And what would be wrong with that if they did? There’s a certain other ummentionable MMO where they have completely overhauled the build and stat system in three of their five expansions. It is not at all an unreasonable expectation, especially two years after release with having had so obvious a need since launch day.

It’s not just a build/stat system. It’s the entire active combat mechanic system. As thefantasticg said: It would be a totally different game. It would have to change from no longer being an active combat system. Which means the whole dodge mechanic would have to be taken out, which means all traits, items, skills, etc. that provide endurance and endurance regen would have to be removed and reworked. Also any dodge skills would have to be reworked as well. They would have to introduce a “trinity” system, which leads to fewer “effective” build options and forces certain classes into certain roles. Any immobilze skills would become obsolete, and need to be changed as well. Which means several class skills/traits/etc. are no longer in the game. Which in turn limits build options.

In the end combat would look more and more like a WoW clone than anything. No, the very nature of active combat means that DPS gear/builds are going to be supreme because all damage can be mitigated with active play. But even so, it doesn’t force anyone into using a DPS build. Only those really concerned with DPS builds are in PvE, and are looking to do things in a certain way at a certain pace. Most other people don’t really care that much. Other builds are actually very valuable in the other game modes (WvW/PvP). While in a zerg, or even roaming, its beneficial to have more healing going on for your group then just DPS glass cannons everywhere. As they tend to drop quickly.

I think that people miss a lot of the content by being able to instantly travel to their destination- if everyone was forced to run, think of all the content that would be brought back to life! Think of the possibilities that would open up! Silverwastes is kind of an example of that, and it seems to be working out just fine.

But people have to go through and experience the content to open up the waypoints in the first place. If you choose to, you can certainly do it again. But being forced to do it over and over after you’ve already done it once is recipe for disaster. Everything in the game is optional, even the first time. But after you’ve done it once, even more so. You completed say all dungeon paths and story on AC. Now unless you want specific rewards (tokens, gold, etc.) there is no reason you ever have to do it again.

Now lets say, in order to do anything in Plains of Ashford, you HAVE to go through AC first. How many people would be in Plains of Ashford? Would it be worthwhile to have to find a group, run a dungeon, just to be able to be get into the zone? I don’t think so.

While this is a hypothetical situation, the principle is the same. No one should be forced to do certain content repeatedly just to be able to do a boss, an event, or explore.

It’s just… A little more running.

Yes, it’s a little more running. But I don’t want to spend the extra few minutes running if I don’t have to. Also that time adds up. So in say my average 3 hour play time, I could spend 30+ minutes just running to content I want to do. So that brings my effective play time down to ~2.5 hours. Thats at least 2 world bosses I missed out on because I had to spend that time running.

Also WPs are a valuable gold sink. So unless you dramatically increased the cost to use the fewer WPs, that means more money in the game, which leads to inflated prices, which leads to being unable to buy anything from the TP. Yeah they only cost a few silver, but literally everyone using WPs multiple times a day it adds up VERY quickly.

When is the ranger going to be nerfed down?

in PvP

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

I think that sums it all…
The Ranger does it all, including crits down a whole life bubble half way through the map… maybe someone should have done something by now…
It seems logic that a profession that is very (i think this is a complete understatement) good from afar should be mediocre or bad at cac, well no, it hits as hard remove all conditions and more. On top of it, it gets stability for some crazy long time, gets most of the boons and puts down all (or almost) conditions. And if that was not enough, when you are 1vs1 on the ground cause of a close fight, you cannot kill him/her cause of the pet regen… Sure they are killable sometimes, but maybe too much is just too much and someone should say something.
Most of the maps are widely open and you can just get spanked (or at least mid life) from a ranger before even getting to him/her.
Personally, I think this is enough and things should change, I am not enjoying this anymore, sure the regen of the war and the elem is over powered but at least you get to survive and play.
Thank you for doing something about this.

TL:DR mostly, but I do think the pet regen while downed is a bit out of hand and OP. I think the pet can regen whether its alive or dead.

Maybe if the pets dead, and it can’t regen when the ranger is downed, it wouldn’t be so bad. but that pet heal while down is crazy fast heal

The pet rez is fine actually. If you take care of the pet, or get in on the stomp before the pet can rez, it’s not really an issue. Plus it’s on a 20 sec CD before it can be used. If you can’t stomp a ranger within 20 sec. of downing them, something is wrong.

Also if the pet is downed, using “lick wounds” (the pet rez skill) revives the pet before it comes to heal you. But it can still be knocked back/immobilized/feared/etc. to keep it away from the ranger while he bleeds out, also giving you more time to get the stomp.

When I do play ranger, I rarely get the chance to even use “Lick Wounds” as I am usually stomped well before the skill becomes active. And if I do, I even more rarely get back up as my pet is CC’d or I get stomped before rez.

All in all though, ranger is not really OP, has a bunch of counters that can render its most powerful burst useless, and focuses ALOT on positioning to be effective.

in comparison to other classes down skills i think its much better

True, but that doesn’t mean that it’s OP.

Fixed for you.

RF has been “nerfed” with a huge tell, and easier to see projectiles. A player can dodge out of the way, evading a huge chunk of damage, can block it, or reflect it. It sucks to take your own RF if it’s been reflected. A good player knows what to look out for, understands when it’s on CD and generally when such a skill is used. (Most rangers spam it, making it easier to deal with.)

I would have liked it better if there were more WPs in GW1. Having to spend 20 minutes running back across the map, fighting everything AGAIN to get to where I was was a giant pain in the kitten. That one of the main reason I have a hard time trying to play it again.

No. I like the WPs as is. With events and what not on timers, and even then being burned through quickly by the zerg, having to run across the whole map would cause more problems then it’s worth. Say, if you died at Teq, and then had to run back across the whole map to get back into the fight, either you could miss out on the event, or cause it to fail if enough people died and had to run for forever.

Also people are still upset about the few broken WPs in the world as it is, simply because they have to run a bit longer to get to where they need to go.

Sorry, reducing the amount of WPs I feel would cause more issues than it’s worth, and actually further the cause of those who want mounts with speed buffs.

They did respond here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Any-word-on-race-changes-in-cash-shop/first#post1618660

I am sure their stance hasn’t changed. Of course if anything, “it’s not off the table, but it’s not something we are looking into working on at this time.”

Would you play a Guild Wars 2 Tabletop RPG?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

I wander off for a week and things happen…. yeesh…

I would be very leery of just porting GW2 MMO mechanics over to an equivalent set of table top mechanics. MMO mechanics and decisions are very different than tabletop ones (for example, what mechanic in GW2 MMO would reflect Jory’s invetigations? Taimi’s inventions? The interpersonal conflict between Rytlock and Logan?).

Rather, I’d step back before you start number crunching and decide what you are trying to actually capture in such a game. If you want to do Living Story style of campaigns, that’s going to have a very different system than one mostly based around fast-paced combat (learn to dodge noob!), or one around epic scale combat (say, role-playing the battle at the end of season 2). Or, if you are going to focus on interpersonal relationships (like the trials and tribulations of the iconics or biconics), that’s yet a different game.

The system (esp. if you are going to build one from the ground up) has to encourage and support a set of playstyles and design decisions. Otherwise, it’s just dice rolls and tables for their own sake.

Yeah, we are trying to get together some people fo a Skype meeting to discuss those very things. I was just throwing out some ideas for the mechanics. But personally I would want to see something more roleplay/story based without super heavy mechanics for combat. Also something simple and easy to get into without having read a 150 pg text book on all the rules and regulations.

As a fairly new GM (for pathfinder) with a group of TT RPG virgins, those books and rules and documents are VERY daunting resulting in the players not wanting to read a bunch, and thus not quite understanding how special things like class mechanics and spells work. I had a player with a thief who, as a long time WoW player, couldn’t grasp that he doesn’t have a invisible skill at least until level 20. And that “stealth” wasn’t the same as invisible. It resulted in him “being in stealth mode” all the time, and would get upset when he would walk into a brightly lit hallway (with no cover) with an ambush waiting for the party, and get attacked on sight. “But I’m stealthed!!”.

Can’t tell if serious….

But dungeons is pretty fast, honestly just playing I’m making so many stacks of these, I wouldn’t worry about farming

I’m serious. nod

Anyway, so it sounds like dungeons. I’m nervous about doing dungeons without my guild because… well, they are all RL friends, but the guild is totally inactive except me. They’ve moved onto other things.

The reason I’m nervous is I don’t like random parties and I don’t like it when people take the game too seriously and get angry if I screw up. I know this community tends to be nicer (much) than WoW’s, but I’m weary.

While you do read the stories of terrible players, people ranting, rage quitting, insulting, etc. they are few and far between cases. By and large the community is really awesome. However, try to find a guild that has more of what you are looking for as far as groups. I recommend Cat Biscuits myself. Hit me up in-game and I’ll send you an invite. It’s a very cool group of people, laid back and are not picky when it comes to dungeons (or anything else for that matter).

“Rare” is a matter of opinion. I personally have destroyed over 2500 myself, and keep at least 1500 on hand at any given time.

However, Silverwastes and WvW is where I would say the best spots are. You get 7-13 per chest in Silverwastes, and some from the camp commanders/lords.

OP, do you use any VoIP apps? Teamspeak, Mumble, Ventrilo, etc? Or maybe something like Overwolf?

These are all 3rd party apps as well, and are all safe to use, one could even go so far to say that these are “approved” as Devs to refer to TS and did have a GW2 Overwolf app contest not to long ago.

It was actually destroyed by Mordrem vines, not Scarlet. However, I am sure when LA gets rebuilt, that WP will be once again activated. But for now, you’ll just have to keep running.

You do realize that programs like SweetFX are basically a client side graphics overlay right? Sure you don’t have to use any 3rd party apps, and that is your choice. (I was pointing out that some 3rd party apps are ok to use, and not that they were all not allowed. That simply isn’t the case).

However, they could certainly add in more graphics settings, but those settings being native won’t ever have the same “finesse” that you can find using 3rd party apps.

It’s not “officially” approved by Anet, and it’s not forbidden either. Anet understands that some people want to use 3rd party apps, and they are ok with it. But only if certain conditions are being met. Sweetfx is one that does meet those conditions.

However Anet did make sort of a response concerning SweetFX.

This is why a company should implement the small stuff like, seeing hp in numerical form etc form the get go. I know if I was to make a game, I’ll give my layer every resource available from day 1 so none of us have to play this guessing game. Also btw, controller support.

Actually you can use an Xbox controller for GW2. I set one up for my wife, but it is fairly complicated and she had to have a cheat sheet with all the buttons. In the end it turned out to be much easier to use the keyboard and mouse. :P

I’m used to controllers though I never could play properly with keyboard with mouse. If I knew how to do it free of charge I would.

There are all sorts of free programs that are made for controllers. Check out:
xpadder
or
Antimicro

I liked the Antimicro better then xpadder, but thats my personal preference.
You can also check out this thread on the matter. There are some presets listed that might help you out.

I would try to either uninstall all the windows updates that you did, or do a system restore to a point before the updates were installed. More than likely it’s one of those updates that isn’t playing nicely with GW2.

After you’ve either rolled back your system or uninstalled all the updates, install each update one at a time, then running GW2 after each update, making a system restore point before you install the next update. It can be tedious, but it will help find out which update is causing the problem, so you can skip that one, and install the rest.

Let us know how it works out.

That would work, in the unlikely event that they decide to reply with more than the usual “we won’t answer that — sorry, policy!”.

It’d be infinitely more useful to have such questions answered publicly so that we can refer to them later and everyone could view them — plus it’d be a heck of a lot less work on their end to only have to put the answer out there once.

Edit we cross posted — I’ll be interested in seeing how they respond. I’ve linked that thread here for reference.

I don’t expect them to comment one way or another on each program, but if they can be notified in advance that such programs are going to be in use, it might save the player from being banned if it is a bannable program. At the very least it would show that the player is not intending to “cheat” and is willing to cooperate.

you are just not good enough.

@OP I don’t think there is anything you can do about it though. Anet doesn’t seem to have much support beyond the basics, it’s not like some subbed MMOs with active game masters. You can report it, but the truth is that nothing will come out of it.

I beg to difffer. They can be reported, yes. And GMs DO respond (we’ve seen evidence from devs, screen shots, chat logs, etc.) and yes there are GMs in game. As far as nothing being done? Not exactly true. When the GMs respond they usually are invisible, but they are there. They also review chat logs, and combat logs to determine if it was griefing, or the player themselves had a legit reason to be kicked. And as we only know one side of the story (the OPs, and not a whole picture either), we can be assured that a GM responded to the report, and took appropriate action against the rest of the group, whether that be a warning, suspension, or no action if they were not at fault.

Actually there are quite a few stat options around healing power: Zealots, Givers (armor), Clerics, Apothocarys, Magi’s, Nomads, Settler’s and Shamans.

I wouldn’t say under-tuned either. The problem is that you have to sacrifice damage for healing. Of course, the right build can pump out some serious healing, but you do such horrible damage as it’s not worth it, in many peoples minds.

For PvE, healing is useless as you can dodge your way out of all damage, and if you did take enough healing power to out heal any and all damage done to you, you are utterly useless as you don’t do any damage.

In PvP. Its situational. I found that going cleric warrior, (shout heals/banner regen, and full points into healing) one can stay alive pretty well, but don’t think you are going to kill anyone. Used it in the spirit watch map (the one with the orb) and it was funny watching 2 and sometimes 3 people focusing me while I was carrying the orb and barely taking any damage. Eventually got downed after heavy focus from 4 players.

WvW. Same as PvP. Situational. If you want to play a regen guardian, you could (at least in theory) keep a small group alive for a fairly long time, which would be great for smaller havoc groups in small scale fights.
