Just for kicks and giggles let’s look at what the Living Story/World has brought us:

-5 New maps/areas. (Southsun, Dry Top, Silver Wastes, The Queens Pavillion, Lions Arch [granted it was there but it has changed])
-1 New dungeon (Fractals) with 14 paths, 1 new path on existing dungeon.
- New gear tier (Ascended)
- New elite skills per class*
- New enemy types*
- 4 new PvP maps (Temple of the Silent Storm, Skyhammer, Spirit Watch, Courtyard [Part of the April feature pack update])
- Jumping Puzzles*
- 2 New WvW maps. (Obsidian Sanctum, Edge of the Mists)
- 4 World bosses (The Great Jungle Wurm, Legendary Sand Giant, Legendary Karka Queen, Tequatl [revamped and upgraded])
- New Achievements
- New Weapon and armor skins*
- New recipies and crafting tiers* (200 just from The Lost Shores event)
- New crafting mats*

(*) = Don’t have specific nembers

So in the ~2 years of the Living Story/World, we have almost enough content that is typically released with an expansion. Please note I did not include any of the temporary stuff from LS season 1, nor the additional areas that opened up during that time. (i.e POIs, Vistas, WPs, Skill Points, Hearts, etc.). The only thing that seems to be missing is the new classes and/or races. But justifying a new race/class would be difficult, as it would have to be part of the lore.

I just want to play devil’s advocate here. Not only is this list not comprehensive, it’s also inaccurate. I understand the goal though.

We have not gotten elites, we’ve gotten grand master traits and 2 heal skills (one now almost utterly useless).

Obsidian Sanctum has been in since release, we got a GvG arena (but only for WvW contestants), which people have to go to another site to organize.

I can go on, but at this point i’m not really interested in correcting things in your post.

Back when LW was released/talked about Colin told us we’d get “an expansions worth of content” and that we’d see 2 week release cycles. One you can basically say has happened, we got an expansion to the game Southsun, Dry Top, Silver Wastes and you forgot the Four Winds, Queens Gauntlet is questionable as a “new zone”. Yet, some or i should say hardly anyone feels that is an expansions worth. Yes it’s substantial, is it what we were told, no. We also got more challenging content in those new zones, a plus in my book.

Second part of this was a 2 week release cycle. Right now it’s not, they didn’t make that happen, most were skeptical, yet they seem to hold on to that as a thing. We get 2 week bursts, then we get breaks (again totally understandable), but it’s not what was sold.

This doesn’t include the plethora of bugs in the game that haven’t been fixed since launch, mostly unpopular ones mind you. People have problems with the game as a whole, which no one can fix with a list of stuff that they add half-done on top of the existing issues people already had.

I’ll concede the Grandmaster traits, that was my mistake. As far as Obsidian Scantum, it was part of Eternal Battle grounds, but was moved to it’s own seperate map. The Queens Pavillion is a new area. The location previous to the pavillion was a giant hole, with scaffolding and workers and not much else.

I also forgot the healing skills.

As far as not being comprehensive, of course I am sure I am missing some things, but the list is still sound.

You realize that all of those things can come via the Living Story system and that an expansion is just a different way of packaging that content?

There are benefits to having content come in via an expansion but it isn’t as though an expansion is the only way to get those things into the game.

Then why hasn’t the living story delivered these things yet? If the LS story was capable of expanding the game like this it would have happened already but so far it has given us none of these things. Maybe because it is not capable of giving us anything besides a new mission to be completed in under an hour?
You can’t expand an mmo with constant 2 week updates. It should be more about quality than quantity.

Because the LS has only been around for about a year, while a traditional expansion generally takes about 2 years. The LS is fully capable of releasing all that stuff, but instead of getting it in smaller chunks, you’d rather get nothing for a long time, then everything all at once. Which, going by other games who rely on expansion content, leads to a lower player base during the off times, then peaks at when the expansion comes. The LS bite sized chunk way at least keeps players playing on a more regular basis.

Ok I am posting my opinion of why I think we should get an expansion pack.
I really feel like this game had so much potential with the core game and the lore but right now the game does not feel like it is moving forward at all. The living story is not progressing the games core, almost everything feels the same as when the game first launched except for all the cosmetic changes and new leveling experience. It seems like the living story is only good for introducing some new mission that is completed in about 30 minutes to an hour every two weeks.

There are a lot of new things that an expansion can deliver to the core game
-Player housing
-GvG
-New races
-New classes
-New weapons for each class
-New utility and elite skills
-New crafting disciplines
-Raids
-Massively expand WvW, new structures, siege weapons, etc.
-New continent
-Expand the personal story
-Guild halls
-Level cap increase
-Player ships and sailing, sea based zones
-New dungeons

There are so many things this game could be getting instead it feels like all it will get is the bland living story every 2 weeks. We have only gotten just one new healing skill and it’s been almost 3 years. GW1 had Factions with new class, continent, etc in just one year.
IMO the game had extreme potential and if things were just done differently this game would probably be over 20 million sales and killing WoW by now but the living story is just keeping gw2 in the same place and not moving forward. They should at least continue the LS the way they did it in November 2012 when they introduced a new island, fractal dungeons, new armor, and led players on a huge open world raid but I really think the game should at least get one paid expansion throughout its lifetime.
I think an expansion may be the only way I would spend money on this game again because I really have no desire to buy gems at all.

Also just want to say that here are some things that can be delivered via the Living Story:

-Player housing
-GvG
-New races
-New classes
-New weapons for each class
-New utility and elite skills
-New crafting disciplines
-Raids
-Massively expand WvW, new structures, siege weapons, etc.
-New continent
-Expand the personal story
-Guild halls
-Level cap increase
-Player ships and sailing, sea based zones
-New dungeons

Wrong. GW2 does not need an expansion, and it is far from needing one critically. I’ve said it so many times already that I don’t even feel like typing out the full response. Just, no. You’re paranoid / unable to see the full picture, just no.

Yeah GW2 doesn’t need anything, GW2 could continue releasing content at a snails pace and slowly shrink and fade into obscurity as an example of how not to manage a MMO. And no one is able to see the big picture as Anet refuses to talk about future content releases, a communication policy that in my opinion is a farce, an example of how not to do things in an industry where communication with your player base is essential to success.

And releasing a chunk of content every 2 years is a better way to go? So you get an expansion, then nothing for 2 years, then another, then nothing for 2 years, and so on. OR they could continue doing what they are doing and release a smaller chunk every 2 weeks (not counting breaks for holidays and such) for free, and still achieve the same amount of stuff that would be in a traditional expansion?

So during those off times, after an expansion, and everything is played through in less than a year, the game still loses players, as those who are bored stop playing, and the same dire predictions of the game fading into obscurity are even more realized.

I love my necro in WvW. I am currently using a condi build with wells. I don’t do much large zerg stuff but with a small havoc group it is lots of fun. Boon corruption, AoE blinds and vuln, throw on epidemic and soon everyones blind, poisoned, vulnerable, chilled and bleeding out.

I have fun with it.

I started my own thread to post an opinion of why an expansion is needed and not asking a what if question about 2015.

Yes, but that thread also contains much discussion as to why an expansion is needed, although the topic is a bit misleading. the whole premise of the thread is about why it is felt an expansion is needed, what it would look like, and whether or not it is in the works.

Why do they HAVE to role play in public?

pdavis.8031

This is an RPG (Role Playing Game) after all. RPers do have every right to play the game accordingly. I don’t even see why this is an issue. One can ignore them easily by turning off emotes if it bothers them. Just as one can ignore/turn off various channels if conversation becomes bothersome. It’s really no different. Just play and let play and Tyria will be better off for it.

People need to stop saying things like “the Living Story can deliver X, Y, and Z just fine so there’s no need for an expansion.” Until the Living Story actually delivers X,Y, and Z (and for most people their particular X, Y, and Z have not been delivered and in some cases their W has been removed) that kind of argument holds absolutely no merit when discussing the desire for a traditional expansion.

On the same token, people need to stop saying that without an expansion the game will die, people will leave in a mass exodus, and Anet will go out of business. Because those arguments have no merit.

As far as LS not delivering X, Y and Z…we already got X and Y from the LS alone. New game mechanics (X) and maps (Y). (i.e. Boss mechanics, new skins, new gear stats, instances for story telling, new maps, new achievements, new enemy types, new mystic forge recipes, etc.)

1. MOUNTS
[~] Threads for reference:
Mounts Megathread – main “mounts” topic, merged by Gaile Grey from 7 threads
Suggestion: Mounts?
Mounts {12}
Mounts {2}, Mounts {8}, Mounts {10}, Mounts {11}, Mounts {13}
Incoming Mounts??
What Would Mounts do for this Game?
No Mounts?
[+] Arguments in favour:
That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
Aesthetics: mounts are cool. Riding a mount is another pleasant experience which a videogame can give to a player who lives in real life. You can use existing animals and even create new ones – that’s a base for new content.
Speed: you can travel faster. You can use waypoints if you like, or mounts if you like the experience.
Progression: buying and upgrading mounts gives you stuff to do, and more stuff to do is what this game needs.
Flying mounts are even more fun then terrestrial mounts. Flying mounts will make exploring Tyria easier and more enjoyable. Flying mounts will let you look at Tyria from a new angle.
Since underwater combat exists in GW2 (same z-axis gameplay) and Tengu are still to make their move, a map with flying mounts makes sense.
Mounts could be constrained to a single map, similar to Dry Top, or exist as a PvP-style activity.
[-] Arguments against:
GW2 is not that other game and was not designed with mounts in mind. That’s why we feel mounts do not belong here, and adding them will feel forced (“added because others have it”, not “added because we needed them”).
Aesthetics: mounts will look silly with GW2 races and animals (giant norn on a pink moa). Mounts will make GW2 even less serious and more visually annoying than Moot, Quip and pink unicorn bows. Mounts will contribute to visual clutter.
We already have cosmetic mounts: broom, carpet, sonic device. We already have a minor speed “mount”: the Dry Top kites.
Speed: waypoints are superior in terms of traveling. Maps are small enough to even travel by foot. We already have mobility skills and speed boosters for that.
Progression: the game was advertised as having (next to no) gear grind, and people love it for that reason. Introducing mounts as an obligatory item (“grind for it or you lose”) will cause the same uproar as ascended armour.
Like jumping would ruin a game designed with no jumping in mind, flying mounts will ruin GW2 maps (for example, think about jumping puzzles, or vistas on mountains, or easily traversing areas which are supposed to be filled with foes). Furthermore, maps were designed to look cool from the ground, not from above; you can see how many problems flying mounts will bring into map design by googling off-map videos and looking at the map attentively.
Things like mounts will require a lot of development resources to adapt to all races and body types; clipping will be a very serious issue, too. These resources could be spent elsewhere.
[=] Current state of affairs:
Most “mount” threads are met with negativity (and a gif of a jokey beating a dead horse), because this topic has been discussed countless times. Still, new “mount” threads appear every now and then, showing that there are players who are actively wanting to discuss the addition of mounts.
New “mount” threads are known to be closed with the reasoning of numerous threads on the subject already existing:

exotics are fast and easy to get, so people can jump right into the pvp fun.

I hope you meant WvW, as all stats are standardized across the board in PvP. All rarity of weapons/armor are made the same for balance. So it doesn’t matter if you jump into PvP naked, or with full ascended.

1. People already do that with JPs which when part of the old daily/monthly allowed them to complete them without having to do the puzzle. Thus getting the reward without doing anything.

2. I agree, however (as far as the forum goers are concerned ) this interferes with their natural progression of getting the daily achievements just by simply playing the game. It feels like a chore to them.

I just dont think that giving the option to revert back would be a good idea. Perhaps there is another way these 2 things can be reconciled to come up with a viable solution. I just dont know at the moment.

Well I think the format for the new dailies is good. Just do 3 and get 10AP. The problem, as discussed at length, is players feel like they have to go out of their way. So instead of making an option to revert back to the “old system” What about just changing the current one so it’s not specific. Instead of “View a vista in Ascalon” It’s just “View a Vista.”. Or maybe increase it so it’s “View 2 Vistas”. This way people don’t feel like they need to go to Ascalon and travel half the map just to get the daily. And also don’t feel like they need to jump into a game mode they are not comfortable with just to get their dailies.

So much time lost they need something and they need it bad. We used to get whole continents, in one year, now we get one map. Can anyone here honestly say they are are happy with the games currents state of not going anywhere. An expansion pays for itself, people will buy it trust me….. Look at WoW don’t see them losing players anytime soon an they are pay to play. The only thing holding the game up right now or we say paying the programmers is shinny objects in the black lion trading post and the wallet warriors who buy them.

But if there is no expansion next year? Nothing will really change. Of course LS will continue to grow and evolve, but people will still come on here and say that an expansion NEEDS to happen or the game will crash and burn. They will still talk about how GW1 had several expansion out by this time, and Anet needs to get on the ball already. Others will still claim that other MMOs follow the expansion model and are doing great, and if Anet wants to be competetive in the genre an expansion needs to be happen, etc. etc. etc.

Nailed it….

Because Anet does need to “get on the ball already”. Next time try to predict someone will say that the sky is blue. I’m sure, that you will then be able to use this as a proof that it is not.

The only thing I was trying to prove was that the same arguments/points are repeated in every expansion thread ever made. The same with duels and mounts.

However when it comes down to this discussion, it’s really only opinion and speculation. And most of that is cries of the game will die without one. I don’t get why people want an expansion. I can understand the possibility of new zones, races, classes, skills etc. but all those things can be rolled out with the current format (aka LS) as it stands. I for one don’t want to pay another $60 just to have access to a couple more zones that will be dead within a couple of months, to have another character to level up, and more skills that probably will be useless.

With the current format, all those things can be rolled out within a similar time frame as the development of a whole expansion. And for free. So $60 to have all the same stuff rolled out in a steady stream over the next year for free? No thank you.

As far as the revenue generated from expansions? Sure it would be a temporary boost in sales, but in the long run box sales make up a small portion of what they actually make. A majority of their sales is from the gem store. Some people don’t like it, and never buy anything. Thats fine. But I know of several people who have purchased with cash, EVERYTHING that is offered in the gem store. Every outfit, booster, mini, skin, upgrade, etc.

I would also say that while WoW still follows the expansion model, I feel that they locked themselves into it, and can’t get out. There are still many people who will buy it, burn through it, and then put it aside until the next expansion. They can cancel their sub for that duration as well, and pick it back up when they want to play again. Also many of the WoW players that I know, have been playing for YEARS. They still pay and log on, not because the game is that engaging and there is that much stuff to do, but because they have developed real relationships with the people they play with. They are very close friends, and sometimes more. It’s the social aspect that keeps them playing long after they have lost interest in the game. But thats a whole different discussion.

Didn’t we have this same discussion last year? That GW2 “needed” an expansion or the game as we know it would die a horrible death? I am sure I remember reading that many people were absolutely convinced that an expansion was in the works, and to be release in 2014. But here we are, a year later and the game is doing fine.

Possible way to get Necro into PVE meta

in Necromancer

pdavis.8031

How to make necromancer welcome in dungeon?

Make the trait “furious demise” Party wide. Here you go, Necromancer give fury on demand, necromancer become usefull.

I actually like this. It would be the necro version of Phalanx Strength. I could go for that. Having near perma fury for everyone in the party would cause necros to be highly sought after.

But one thing to help bring necros to more usefullness in PvE (read: dungeons) would be to have more cleave options on weapons, and a rework of how conditions work in group settings. And of course being able to provide group support in the form of boons. (i.e wells)

at OP, as far as your suggestion, it’s not terrible, but I think with the right amount of tweaking something like that could be pretty cool. Kind of like a stance or aura.

Just found this gem in response to another thread, but concerning “grind”

GRIND
Neither game is a grind for the casual gamer unless they decide they want to make it a grind.

GW1 The end game gear was level 20 and you could put on Runes+Sigils on your armor. Similarly in GW2 you can do this, however when GW1 came out those runes were very very expensive, 100k for Runes of superior vigor, 80k for Runes of Superior Protection.
Similarly to gw2, you can buy the best runes for a LOT of gold, or you can buy ones not so good but similar for a LOT LOT less

The difference in GW1 was that the end game gear came with different skins, Obsidian armor for a casual gamer wasn’t really something they had especially at the start. Obsidian shards and Ectos were very expensive. If you actually farmed them and didn’t buy any (a lot of people did this) I would argue this is a considerable grind.

But how is that any different to GW2? You can happily do all the content in the game (barring 50 FoTM) in full exotic gear which lets be honest costs around 20g for a full set if you buy it off the TP, even cheaper if you craft it yourself or even cheaper if you collect dungeon tokens and get the armor for that.
As for runes, Ruby orbs are 50 silver each, 3 gold and you’re good enough to do any pug instance. (or any other orb catering to your own build)
Ascended armor is only useful at level 80 content/fractals. You do NOT need it.
Legendary weapons give you 0 benefit over ascended weapons. It’s like comparing Obby armor to Elite Luxon.

GWAMM – pretty grindy.
ZTitle – pretty grindy
Sweet/Party/Drunk – I don’t think buying/collecting 10k sweet points is grindy at all
LB/ASura/Vanguard etc titles – 160k rep points (iirc)
100% map completion without Texmod?? Have fun
Capping over 300 elite skills (and needing the plat to fund all the elite skill caps 300k+)
10k Unids?
12mil Kurzick / Luxon faction? Please stop me if you don’t consider any of this to be grind.
10k locked chests?
Lucky/Unlucky titles.. you think any of these aren’t grind????

“Increasing loot drops in WvW will only cause it to be another train filled with “farmers” who don’t want to contribute in any meaningful way”

So adding loot would add more players…wait, is this a ‘trick’ question? I’m confused.

If more players, than more loot. More things happening. More flipping of objectives. More gameplay. Who cares if they are loot-hungry-lunatics? I don’t.

It’s not about just putting butts in seats so to speak. It’s about filling the WvW population with people who want to actually play WvW. Adding in an increase drop rate for loot WILL turn it into Edge of the Mists. Go try to flip an objective out of order there and see what happens. Or try to engage in a PvP battle, the zerg with either move on and ignore you, or rage, report, and whine about it. Adding more loot, to make it on the level of PvE, will certainly invite these types of players in. Yeah stuff will get flipped, but god forbid it gets flipped out of order by a roaming group. There will be no reason to defend, or upgrade stuff if it’s only get to get flipped as soon as RI is done. Why take and use supply, or build seige? most obectives will just PvD if the zerg is large enough. Making loot on the same level of PvE will turn all the borderlands into another EotM. People whining and raging and fixing matches just so the can get their karma/loot/gold the easiest and fastest way possible.

Edit: Also as a side note, WvW has some of the best places in the game for T6 mat drops.

Why Wvw fails to attract players

in WvW

I disagree with most people in this thread. The whole point of WvW isn’t to get the biggest baddest and the most loot drops. Essentially if loot drops become more plentiful and what not WvW pretty much turns into the next EoTM with 50 man karma trains running around, avoiding fights and capping empty towers.

People SHOULD do WvW for the fighting experience, capping and defending objectives and these things should be fun. If they were fun, people wouldn’t be complaining about oh WvW isn’t as monetarily (if that is a word) rewarding as PvE or EoTM. Newsflash fellas, it ISN’T supposed to be and to think that it should be I think is just moronic in general.

The incentive should be placed on things that would make WvW fresh, exciting and fun first and foremost. Secondly, come up with very unique rewards and achievements based on that.

Maybe things like an underwater tower. Mini WvW areas within a borderland where only a max of 15 people can enter and if you control the area it adds a good chunk to your PPT. Scale rewards down based on the number of people capping an objective, the lesser people it takes to take an objective the greater the rewards. Give more incentive to smaller groups. Party and guild based achievements. Bounties like (kill a certain person in WvW). Discourage fight avoidance and the mindless we got more numbers than you do mentality. Resolve population and server imbalances, shift PPT more towards killing people rather than objectives. Create more objectives, can make them party based as well too. Perhaps increased rewards for a group killing a larger group of people if you can find a way to code that.

Pretty much this. Increasing loot drops in WvW will only cause it to be another train filled with “farmers” who don’t want to contribute in any meaningful way. However, adding more unique rewards/achievements I think could go a long way for player retention and bringing in fresh blood.

I also think that adding in world bonuses for PvE based on winning might help bring in more people. Maybe something like: I play WvW for say maybe 5 hours a week. And during that time I’ve upgrade/built some seige, capped and defended points, and killed some players. So when my server wins that week, I get a bonus WvW buff for PvE and WvW. Say, +% MF based on how many points I’ve capped, +% Gold for how many points I’ve defended and +% Karma for how many players I’ve killed, etc. (Or something), for X amount of hours (say double what I’ve played)

So now there is an incentive for new players to jump into WvW and actually try to do something. You don’t get those bonuses if you lose. Sure there might be a zerg train, but that train can easily be derailed if its just people riding it. And just riding a train doesn’t mean your server is going to win that week either.

Just some thoughts…

Texas Ranger armour: here's how it happened

in Ranger

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Anet game designer envisaged a sword/bow/dagger-wielding, elven-ish, druid-ish, at-one-with-nature-and-the-beasts Ranger.

Says said designer to American art team, “Go create some armour for a Ranger”.
Infamous last words;

We now have as many variations as one could imagine for an American ‘Texas’ Ranger in a cowboy hat and trench coat—but without the possibility to actually wield pistols or a rifle. Click for a Texas Ranger

End Result; Ludicrous. Tell me this ain’t how it went down, and I’ll eat my hat.
Anet, may we please have more armour that has synergy with a fantasy-style Ranger?

Well it was actually Chuck Norris who was the one who made that decision. He was a fan of the GW1 and decided “hey, if they are making a ranger, it had better look like me gosh darn it!” So he called up Anet and was all like “HEY!!! Make your ranger look like me!” and Anet was all “Yes sir!”

So thats why ranger armor looks more like “American Texas Ranger”.

Also what would you consider a more fantasy ranger look? I find the trench coat, and hat look to fall more in line with a fantasy ranger than anything.

What can I say. I don’t believe you, when you say that you didn’t grind in the game. I consider grind as doing the same pieces of content over and over again in order to gain something.

Grinding:
- Doing the same dungeon over and over again for tokens
- Getting gold for ascended armour/getting materials for ascended armour/killing mobs for ascended armour and weapons.
- Getting x amount of geodes to craft Mawdrey and a bonus time-wall in case you actually want to craft everything yourself. (Getting punished for limiting grind)
- Queensdale, Orr, “Whatever” Train.
- Farming Black Lion Keys.
- …

Just off the top of my head.
Of course you can always pay for some of those with real life money, but otherwise you’re forced to grind, or find rich friends.
That’s grind for me. Plenty of content is locked behind it. It’s okay if you disagree.

As I had stated before, you don’t understand what they meant by no grind. I feel generous so I’ll link a few things to read/watch for you.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU1JUwPqzQY

You stated plenty of content is locked behind grind but you didn’t list a single example. Could you please provide me with one?

But I did. Ascended Armour, Dungeon Armour, crafting Mawdrey and if you’re interested in more:
- getting Legendary (and precursor)
- getting Pavilion rewards
- unlocking titles
- repeating winter activities to get wintersday rewards

With dungeons and legendaries being the least obnoxious ways of grinding, as they vary things a little. The only other way of getting some of those things is buying them for gold, which requires, in turn, to grind for gold or buy it for real money.
Unless you don’t see it as grinding. I sure as hell do.

The whole game has come to this.
Do you have enough materials to get this thing? No? Then grind for materials. You don’t want to? Do you have gold? No? Then grind for gold.

Actually, you don’t even need to grind for gold. If you are only interested in gaining the rewards (which as said, are not considered content) and you can puraches many of those with gold, they also included a nice gem to gold conversion feature.

So do you have enough materials to get this things? No? Then play the game and aquire them through normal play. You don’t want to because you feel you need X item right now? Do you have gold? No? Then use your credit card and buy gold.

Of course you have to grind for gold. Any beggining level 1-20 player will tell you that. They start with nothing, they get nothing for exploration and completing heart quests. Then they discover the beast way of making gold – aka dungeons, which is a way of grinding. That’s how this game is right now. Grinding is rewarded. Mindlessly running and doing the same thing is rewarded. If it offered challenge, maybe it would be fun, but it doesn’t, really.

How is swiping my credit card, purchasing gems, converting those to gold and buying what I want from the TP a grind?

There are plenty of alternative ways to get gold, and none of them are “Mindlessly running and doing the same thing”. Just doing map completion actually can net quite a bit of gold. Harvest EVERYTHING, do all the hearts/events in that area, and move on. PS, LS, dungeons, PvP, WvW, all give money. Of course due to the very nature of the game you are going to do more then one thing at any given time. Unless you just did 1 PvP match, Map completion in WvW, full PS and LS, including all the dungeons, 1 fractal, and each of the world bosses.

meta vs. Meta: A helpful guide

Ok so now my real input.

So while there are groups on the LFG that are asking for “zerk only”, or those in the PvP lobby who broadcast they are looking for specific builds/classes, in general it doesnt seem to matter to a large portion of players what is or isnt meta, or what it even means. Ive only encountered a few people in all my time pugging that actually care what gear/build i have in game. I haven’t been kicked for having a valk axe/axe build on my warrior, havent been raged at for bringing a necro to a dungeon, or a staff ele to pvp. Its only a certain type of player, commonly called elitists on the forums, that actually care. Most everyone else in game just wants to play and have fun and dont care one way or another.

That actually makes sense. “Preferred playstlye” isn’t by definition “meta” However in the general consensus using the term “meta” to refer to what the preferred style of play is has become “meta”.

So it’s “meta” to use the term “meta” when talking about the “meta”….

Actually “Play how I want” was a main selling point for GW2 and did not just come from thin air, it is a Dev quote- look it up.

Yes, but constantly changing the meaning out of context, that’s what the players do. These days it seems best to just simply say nothing as a game developer.

And people wonder why Anet doesn’t talk to us before hand about what they are working on…

[Suggestion] Solution for instance-stealing

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

I would like a change to the current system. (Although I have never been kicked, or griefed) I have taken to selling runs that I’ve soloed. It makes me nervous when doing so, cause I don’t want to get kicked out my own run.

But instead of just reverting it back to a modified old system. What about making it so the instance owner has to accept those who want to enter the party? So in the LFG, the player clicks join party, and a notification pops up on the instance owner asking if they want to accept party join request. This way dungeon sellers can do what they do with out fear of being kicked, (get money before accepting). Also make it so the instance owner is unable to be kicked period. If they DC they can come back, just like it is now, without the whole party losing the instance. But they can’t be kicked by those who like to do such things and be trolls.

I just wanted to let you know that your feedback on this is really appreciated. I understand how this immersion breaking bug is severely detracting from your enjoyment of Guild Wars 2. I assure you, Radiobiology, Bluefox. We have Top Men working on it right now. As always it will be fixed When It’s Ready™.

Too late for me, I’m afraid. Once I saw this game breaking feature in OP’s post (even though I never saw it in game and have no idea where it is) I was forced to rage quit and uninstall the game. I’m moving on to my next game, Forum Wars II. It’s an exciting RPG where you post on the forum of a game you no longer play about issues you personally have never experienced and only know about through other people’s comments. Achievement points are gained on how irrelevant the issue is to you (pretty much all of them on a game you don’t play). Bonus achievement points are given if the posts are based on remarks by a Dev that are misunderstood or are no longer relevant.

Yeah, I was enjoying Forum Wars II, until the major forum nerf. Now I can’t find gain any AP due to the fact that most of the forums have been merged in some way. I thought FW2 was Play how I want, now I am forced to scroll through various topics to find what I want to read.

OT. Yeah something like that would seriously mess with my OCD. I don’t know about game breaking, but at least thanks for bringing it up. Hopefully these things do get fixed. It’s amazing how a little detail like that can totally make a huge difference.

Thats about all I can think of at the moment. Please feel free to add to the list, but I believe those cover most of the arguments against this change. Thanks!

I’m honestly surprised you haven’t listed the main con concern voiced many times:

  • The source of slower, but steady AP gain which came from simply playing the game has been removed. Now you have to go out of your way to get 10AP (and experience for alts), and cannot get 5-8AP by simply playing the game the way you want.

That’s why for a PvE player with his preferences (be it Tequatl and Wurm or dungeons and fractals or Silverwastes and Dry Top) it’s next to impossible to get any achievement points unless he goes out of his way. And I bet that PvE players who know what they like to play each evening or each weekend are the majority.

I believe that concern was covered under:
1) Causes players to experience parts of the game they may be unfamiliar/not enjoy. (i.e getting out of comfort zone.)
2) AP hunters need to be more deliberate when getting dailies.

Any other “con” can be expressed with either one, or both of those answers. Feeling like you need to go out of your way? See 1 and 2. What if I only play PvP? See 1. But I don’t like WvW? See 1. I need to get AP to get the next chest but don’t like to feel pressured? See 1 and 2…

And so on and so forth.

Also, If I remember the experience items gained from doing the dailies are account bound and can be transferred to an alt you want to level.

Missing from your list, pdavis;

Pros:
Equal representation in all modes of the game.

Cons:
Removal of choice in how to accomplish the dailies.

It’s just… seriously. Why are you defending the design choice to diminish the options in completing the daily? Yes, they’ve expanded the other game mode options, and that’s grand. I highly approve. But what made it necessary to be at the cost of pve dailies? Why not give everyone’s mode 6 or 8 choices? What would that possibly harm?

You do make a good point. However, having equal choices for each game mode makes it so WvWers, or PvPers don’t also feel they need to go to PvE to do their dailies. They still get to “Play how they want”. I would be ok with more options per game mode, but as it stands I feel it’s a good balance.

Or heres another way to look at it:

New Dailies:
Anet: Here’s even more pieces of cheese!!

Player: Ok, whats the catch?

Anet: Continue to do what you were doing! We gave you some nice pieces of cheese just for logging in!! But wait thats not all! If you want to get some extra special cheese then here is a list of things to do, just do 3 of them!

Player: But thats out of my way, and I don’t like those things…

Anet: Thats ok, there are lots more stuff you can do to get those extra special pieces of cheese! Plus it gives you a chance to try something new! Now go have fun!

Player: I don’t wanna…

Fanbois: oooo more cheese, extra special cheese, as well as more things to do!! Awesome!

Haters: Anet sucks! I don’t like it, change it back!

(It kind of works both ways)

You forgot that part:

Player: What about those 5 special pieces of cheese I loved which I got for just playing the game? And the sauce?

Anet: Oh, they’re now 10!

Player: Can I still get them for just playing the game? Or at least half?

Anet: They’re now 10 and only 10! Oh, sorry, you should go and jump through the XYZ hoops! Did we mention that they’re now 10?

Player: Give me back my 5 pieces of cheese for just playing the game!

Fanbois: Why are you so ungrateful? Didn’t you hear they’re now 10?!

We can go back and forth on this all day, whether in the same format or not. (Personally that format would get old QUICK, so I’m going to stop there :P)

My point was, that there are different ways to look at the same thing. While you, and others, look at it as being limited and forced to do something to get AP. Many others look at the same thing and see an easier and more direct method to get more AP. It’s really just a matter of perception. But which is wrong and which is right? Both sides bring up some good points, both for and against. It’s not “fanboism” to look at it and see the good qualities, and the positive side. And it’s not “hateraid” to look at just the negative. While this is a discussion, one needs to look at both sides and make a judgement from there.

I can see how some would feel pressured, or forced to do certain things, but I by no means agree thats the case. So following your example, I’ll make a list of the Pros and Cons of the new daily system.

Pros:
3 out of 12 objectives are needed to gain 10 AP. (Previously 10 of 10)
Provides more incentive to explore, try out different game modes and improve your gaming experience.
No longer needed to gain Mystic Coins or Laurals.
Completely optional and provide no other reward other than AP.
Less of a “grind” to gain 10 AP, and no pressure to complete daily activities.
Can easily be done regardless of preferred game mode.

Cons:
Causes players to experience parts of the game they may be unfamiliar/not enjoy. (i.e getting out of comfort zone.)
AP hunters need to be more deliberate when getting dailies.

Thats about all I can think of at the moment. Please feel free to add to the list, but I believe those cover most of the arguments against this change. Thanks!

I must be mysteriously logging into an old version of the game then, because I’m still playing how I want ankitten ot being forced to do anything I don’t want to.

Must be a hack…apparently no one can “play how they want” anymore…

Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone that I’m using the “Play how you want” hack! Other people might start wanting to find out how to play how they want, then they might patch it out!

Oh right!! My bad!!

Although I haven’t had a chance to log in and check out the new daily system for myself. Just reading the patch notes doesn’t give me any sense of not being able to do certain things, or being forced to do certain things.

I am a frequenter of these forums. I see the same type of thread for each and every patch. Even on bug fix updates. Something was changed/updated/fixed/etc. and yet there will ALWAYS be a group of people that swear that this will break the game, that it will make it more difficult to do anything, and is a terrible direction for the game to go. As someone said earlier we don’t know what the whole picture is, what Anets goals and vision for the game is. The manifesto is quoted (way out of context BTW) as proof that this game is moving in direction that isn’t consistant with what the devs have in mind.

People in general fear change. History has shown time and again that younger generations are more likely to accept and embrace change than older generations. In this game, it’s the vets who are most resistant and more likely to complain about changes then a new player. Change means progress. If you don’t adapt, and change the way the game is played there can be no progress. People are already complaining about the game being stale. If Anet didn’t ever change anything, then the game couldn’t progress and get better. Does Anet make mistakes? Of course. But they DO learn from them and do it better the next time around. (Living story season 1 vs season 2 anyone?)

This change only changes a few minor things I will need to do in order to get the AP. It’s not going to completely change the way I play the game, the way I approach doing certain things, or have to radically alter anything about my preferred play style. You eather adapt and move on, or find yourself quickly becoming irrelevant. I for one don’t want to be phased out, so I will adapt and move on. The game is still fun, and I still enjoy it, and will continue to do so for years to come.

Did you read the OP? This thread is not specific to the new daily system, so why are you responding as if it is?

The topic is about the changes made to the game since launch that have affected what people do in the game. Yes I read it. I read it from when it was first started. However, the focus of the conversation has shift to mainly focus on the changes to the new daily system, to which I was responding to in the last paragraph of my post. The main portion of my post is a comment on changes to the game in general, whether it be the new daily system, or the implementation of megaservers. My point remains the same. Change needs to happen, some were good, others not so much. But in any event, you need to learn from the mistakes and adapt to changes as they happen. To do other wise is to be a major discredit to yourself and leave no room for personal growth and improvment leading to stagnation and irrelevance. Not just in game, but in life in general.

We all have dreams of landing an elusive precursor, so no, sorry pdavis, it doesn’t count.

Whether or not you like something doesn’t make it more effective than something else… please take that into consideration before giving advice.

I want to steer OP in the right direction is all.

The reality is that anything can work, but we’re talking about what works best.

We know you like axe offhand, pdavis. It’s still blatantly suboptimal. Don’t take it personal.

Oh I am well of that. But my response wasn’t as to whether or not it was the most optimal (which it isn’t but it’s still fun :P) My response was directed more to the PvE comment. Which is the main topic of this thread.

Yes another OH weapon would be far more efficient, but thats not the point I was trying to make.

I had a dream last night I had 2 precursors drop in a 2 day span. A shield, and a wand of some sort. I was super stoked. But when I logged on the next day to try to sell them, they were gone from my inventory. Tried to submit a ticket, but woke up before I got the response….

Does that count?

When i logged in yesterday to check out the changes i wasn’t really all that impressed. This game continues to dumb itself down, i did a lot of talking to people and they mostly said, if another game came out similar to this one, they wouldn’t bother. The game is heading into a facebook farmville.

All i see them doing these days is getting dedicated players riled up, but they don’t leave, since, well, lets face it, there simply isn’t anything better in the mmorpg world. But i do see most of my friends playing something else over even logging in.

I think the idea of rewards is completely lost on them now. They basically throw out rewards like a river flows water, practically begging people to just log in, but not really addressing core issues why people don’t even want to do that much. I’d spill out all the feedback again, but it’s literally pointless. I tend to agree with most of the OP.

Just a few things. It would be awesome for the game to go the direction farmville. $600,000,000.00 annual income and over 252,000,000 players. Just sayin…
(http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/companies/zynga-net-worth/)

You say they throw out rewards. Part of that has been asked time and time again by the community. (At least on the forums). Every second day is another thread of how content needs to be more rewarding, how the current reward structures are way off balance, and how doing X content needs to give more and better rewards. The problem is though, what do they give as rewards? More gold? More loot? Better loot? What defines “better loot” when much of the player base already has Ascended, and almost everyone has exotic? You’ve already reached the top tiers of gear available, add in any more then it become verticle progression. Even now there are tons of people who are upset with Ascended, adding more would be a terrible idea.

So what do they do? The answer the call and provide even more rewards because thats what the forum community is crying for. And what does the community do? “There STILL not enough rewards in the game! I have to log in and get rewarded, if I decide to play the game I get rewarded again! This is crap! We need more rewards!!! GG Anet!!”

Edit: I am not sure when those figues were posted, but a more recent look at their revenue and income can be seen here: http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/AMDA-KX1KB/3737240017x0x792615/A7764C7F-0DF6-4160-890D-5D0F05EB060D/Zynga%20Q3'14%20Earings%20Slides.pdf

In short, Zynga is actually not doing terribly and still maintains a large player base.

Traited Axe #5 brings in a lot of adrenaline that I can spam Burst as soon as cooldown. Of course having 50% base crit chance helps a lot.

We’re talking about PvE.

And this also applies to PvE. I use it quite often. Trying to either solo open world champs, or for higher level vets, etc. It has many uses. I like my Axe/Axe thank you very much.

Hmmm interesting idea.

I wouldnt mind being able to trade them in or make them do something cool after level 80. May like a paragon post level 80 system. Where you get additional account bound bonus karma gain, gold gain, and MF. Like the achievement chest bonuses.
