This is how announcements work. You don’t know a thing, then someone tells you, and then you do know.

Even though the forum seems to have already decided it’s an expansion all we’ve actually been told so far is something is coming, it involves Mordremoth and it’s called Heart of Thorns.

I just can not understand the forum logic today.

What I do not understand is the lack of logic with this forum.

Whatever the big surprise is, it should be shared with us if it is a free update, P2P or a one time purchase.

Anet is well known for lack of any information until the actual announcement. Its their policy, always has been. No amount of player requests is going to change that.

However, it doesnt make sense to announce a price of a product before the actual product is announced. Its like Apple saying they are launching something, a new idevice, software, whole new line of products, etc. but they aren’t hinting at what it might be. But it can be yours for only $59.99.

Actually if it’s Apple I could see that working. I know a worrying number of people who seem to think the only important part of their announcements is “there’s a new thing to buy, it has an Apple logo”.

True, but thats a special case. Apple fan boys will buy anything and everything just because its Apple. However, use [instert company here], and my example still holds true.

[Suggestion] Stat selectable Vendor armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

I don’t know if it’s already been brought up, and it’s more of a QoL suggestion than anything. But what about making vendor armor/weapons stat selectable? As it is, if I remember correctly, you have a huge list of all the armor stats available for each type. So at least 18 pieces per stat combo. (heavy, medium and light. 6 pieces each.) and at least four stat combos per dungeon. That means 72 pieces to scroll through per dungeon vendor. And thats just armor. Not including weapons.

If they were stat selectable (only that particular dungeon stats available for the dungeon vendors) you can clean up the vendor UI by only listing 18 pieces of armor (light, medium, heavy) and the weapons. You can select which stats you want upon equipping the weapon/armor.

It just cleans things up, and makes it so people don’t have to scroll through 15,000 pieces of equipment to find a piece with the stats they want.

Thanks!

I got my wife into it shortly before the launch of the NPE. She has ZERO experience in any type of MMO, and very little gaming experience in general. After the NPE launched she found it much easier to handle, has a much better time figuring things out, and what to do next, and actually really enjoyed it. With the NPE she was given information a bit slower and more easily digestable bits and that has helped her greatly.

NcSoft said in their report that there will be an expansion 2015 and it will not be free.

NcSoft did not say this.

Yes they did say it. Have you seen the report?
http://www.kdbdw.com/bbs/download/192028.pdf?attachmentId=192028

“Also, in 2015, NCsoft is expected to roll out an expansion pack for Guild Wars 2, which
has sold more than 3mn copies since its release in 2012 in the US and Europe. We
assumed in our 2015 earnings estimates Guild Wars 2 expansion pack sales of around
2mn copies (US$50 per copy), and note that the expansion packs for Guild Wars 1 have
sold almost as much as the original game in the year of their release.”

Do you honestly think NCsoft would write about themselves in third person?
Btw have a look at that url you posted. Kdbdw doesn’t have a quaggan to do with NCsoft, they are just analytics who have tried to be like “omg we were so right about this expansion date” for the past years now. Every year they’re sooooo sure it will arrive, yet they end up being wrong over and over again, until when we finally have one, and they manage to fool you into thinking their annual predictions were accurate.
Source criticism, you’re welcome.

I also think that while NCSoft may want to release an expansion, it really comes down to what Anet wants to do. NCSoft may be the parent company of Anet, and Anet is basically just contractors for NCSoft, I am sure that it is part of Anets contract that Anet has a large say as to how the game is developed and run. IIRC early in 2013 NCSoft stated an expansion was in the works, and on the way, but Anet came forward and said “No there isn’t. Sorry for the confusion.”

If this is the case, then NCSofts predictions for an increase in revenue from more sales may be based on their desire for a traditional expansion, but those same predictions may not even be based on what Anet is actually doing, and the upcoming announcment.

Can we ban people posting these types of threads?

Why ban someone for offering suggestions, advice, thoughts, and desires? Isn’t that exactly what these forums are for? Of course the main problem is, that without a functioning search option, most people dont bother to look if there is already a thread on a given subject and just start their own.

PvE Axe Offhand

in Warrior

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

People on this forum have a low opinion of offhand axe. They just dont get it. and while for a while offhand axe was weak, and even at one point the combo whirl was broken for many months ( and I had to mount a small campaign to have that eventually fixed, see https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/VIDEO-Anet-stole-the-pewpews/first#post3973294 )

It’s not us that don’t get it.

Anyone that fully understands and compares the other options for offhands that the warrior has with axe offhand will know how terrible it is in PvE. Whether or not somebody likes it is completely different than whether or not it’s actually worth using from an efficiency standpoint.

So it’s a matter of preferred playstyle vs being the most efficient. It also depends on what you are doing in PvE. A dungeon speed run with a group? yeah, axe 5 is lacking significantly. Take something else and do your part. Solo open world roaming? Why not? Its fun, provides a very quick adrenaline recharge, a bit of fury, and an AoE of sorts, useful for tagging multiple mobs in a tight space. At which point I would say that it is more “effecient” than your other options. So in the end it depends on what you are doing in PvE.

I personally "like"" it, but am not going to use it while doing a group dungeon or something. But I mostly solo roam anyway, haven’t run a dungeon in forever.

Tomatoes come from my garden, does that make them my children?

Only if they were sentient, you created them to be sentient and to serve a specific purpose. Then in essence they could indeed be considered your “children”.

If these seeds come from Mordremoth (which is likely),[…]

That’s just speculation. We don’t know where the seeds come from.
What we do know, however, is that Ronan sumbled across them by accident und planted one of them without even knowing what would come of it. Ventari didn’t know either and most certainly Mordremoth didn’t have any influence on whether and where this seed would be planted. Mordremoth can turn and use Sylvari, yes, just like Zhaitan can turn and use members of the other 4 races, but that doesn’t mean that Sylvari were meant to be dragon minions all along. The only thing that hints in this direction is Wynne’s dream prior to her awakening and it’s not like dreams couldn’t be misinterpreted. You could also say, that she dreamt of the Sylvari being vulnerable to Mordremoth. Small difference, big effect.

Actually the seed, and subsequently the Sylvari DO in fact come from Mordremoth. It’s spelled out pretty clearly in the last chapter of the LS.

Wynne: She’ll torture me until I tell my secret. That will be the end of our kind.
Caithe: The end of sylvari? What do you mean?
Wynne: We come from the jungle dragon. We belong to it. We’re meant to serve it.

It’s not that the Sylvari can be corrupted, but that they were created to be dragon minions. Created by Mordremoth for that very purpose. But whatever influence Ronan and Ventari on the tree led the current known Sylvari to break free from that. Just how exactly is still unknown, and may just remain that way.

Aspirations Map Concept

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

The idea here would be a map similar to the Hall of Memories. It would have practice golems and combat practice against profession AI and mobs. Players on this map would be given access to every type of weapon, trait, armour, upgrade component and accessory for free but any changes they make to traits and gear are, of course, reverted upon exiting the map. Think of it as an in game character builder where you can test every aspect of what your character could be in combat before you commit to it.

That would be cool. Also from the same area have the ability to test yourself 1v1 with another player, or even 5v5 in a team. You can also have a ranking system, its own reward structure, and the ability to have “private” fights where you set your own rules.

oh wait………

I’ll have to see if I can find it, and go over it again. (It’s been a few years, and never actually got to play.) But it is a unique system he developed. Maybe that will provide some ideas.

For a CCG or TCG, based on GW2 I think a system similar to how Middle Earth: The Wizards worked would be really cool. It was basically a PvE card game. Much of the combat was RNG based (had to roll dice to determine outcomes). I’ve played around with some ME mods for myself, but something like that could easily be adaptable.

Someone started a thread about a Guild Wars tabletop RPG. I love this idea, and want to start working on it.

Officially we are going to create a whole new system, probably based off of various systems we already are familiar with (i.e. Pathfinder, D&D 3.5, Gurps, D20, etc.)

We want this project to be by the community, for the community. Once it reaches it’s final stage, we will be releasing it so all can enjoy!

Stay tuned for more updates and information.

Personally, I don’t understand the tabletop RPG craze. Most of my close friends stopped gaming with me so that they could partake in weekly DnD meetings, and I have joined them for quite a few to see what it was all about. However, I stopped going because it was terribly boring for me. I am someone that enjoys visual aspects of gaming and constant immersion, not any of this turn-based storytelling where I have to roll dice and imagine everything that is happening.

I think GW2 is better as a video game. I don’t understand why anyone would want to tabletop a video-game when they could just play the video-game itself…

Though, to each their own. For those that love tabletop RPGs, I guess Tyria would be a good setting for an adventure.

Tabletop gaming for many is more about the social aspect then immersion. A chance to get together face to face with friends and do something everyone enjoys. Many people also enjoy the chance to step away from work, kids, daily pressures of life and have some fun with friends without spending a ton of money. Also such games tend to bring people closer together and strengthen relationships. If you have a dedicated group of people that play on a regular basis, you are going to become close life long friends. Of course it’s not for everybody, but I would encourage you to at least try a few sessions before making a judegment on it.

I’ve gotten a few of my friends into it, who before held a similar view as yours. And these are people who generally thought of tabletop RPGs as something for “nerds” and those with “no life”. Once they got started, and we had a few sessions, they become excited about it and wanted to do more. If for no other reason then just for the social aspect of the game.

The more I think about this, the more I actually want to start putting together something. I think the simplest way would be to use the GURPS system. I would love to start working on races, and racial abilities and stats. Of course aside from the playable races, one could also make stats and stuff for the non-playable races (i.e. Kodan, Skritt, Dredge, Quaggen, etc.) Of course I would also need to translate the professions to a tabletop friendly version. For starters I would just stick with the current professions of GW2 and go from there.

Anyone interested in collaborating with me on such a project? Being a fan made, non profit creation, I am pretty sure we can use names, lore, etc. from the game itself without fear of reprisal from Anet. Although I would want Dev confirmation beforehand.

No matter what her intentions were, she was still crazy. In D&D terms, she might be considered Chaotic Good. Her ultimate plan was to free the Sylvari from being Mordremoths minions, but the way she went about it certainly wasn’t the best. However through the machine and her visions, it’s pretty clear now that she was being influenced by Mordremoth, which led to him being awakened. While her plan probably was to disrupt the ley lines, and keep him asleep so she could take him out while he slept, attacking everyone else probably wasn’t the best idea.

Once I found out everything, I feel so much pleased by her role, even being evil it does feel “good” now. I think that Mordy manipulated her in a way she didn’t even realize. She THOUGHT she was releasing the chains, but actually she was walking into the abyss (which, btw, she mentioned in her journal). In her mind, she was saving all sylvari from Mordy’s influence, but this belief was planted (no pun intended) in her mind by the dragon. #speculation

Yup. And now looking back, with this new knowledge, it changes everything. Scarlet was not the “bad guy” but rather the “good guy” just being manipulated for the wrong end. It also makes sense why her true intentions were never revealed. They wanted to keep the knowledge that Sylvari were dragon minions hidden until now. We can only speculate on how the story might have gone if we knew from the beginning what her true goal was. We might have actually helped her in her goal if that was the case.

But then it brings the question of how she knew about the Sylvari. Was it revealed in The Dream? Did she go to the Pale Tree when she found out? Did she work with Wynne (sp?) and discovered the truth, but decided to go “rogue” and do something about it on her own instead of trying to maintain the secret? oh so many new questions!!!!!

So I’ve had ~8 years of Tabletop RPG experience since my good ’ol days with AD&D back in the day.

I’m curious if there are any Tabletop RPG fans out there who would like to see a GW2 adaption.

And not a d20 clone either.

I’m thinking more of an original system that best captures the feel of GW2 yet transitions well to pen and paper. Note, I’m thinking along the lines of a tabletop storytelling, character-building, roleplaying game, not a stat-crunching, number-stacking, miniature wargame.

Any Tabletop fans out there that have been wishing to trek across Tyria with their buddies away from the computer screen?

It might actually work fairly well with the Whitewolf system. Even a generic D20 system can work rather well, if the GM does it right. Of course one could always just run a GW themed game themselves and use whatever system they like the best.

Guess what I am doing for my next Pathfinder session

Raising Level Cap?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

While it probably won’t happen, Anet has mentioned on multiple occasions that a level cap increase is very possible with future expansions.

IIRC they said it was not off the table, and something they would like to see sometime in the future. But they say that about everything.

However, concerning a level cap raise. There really is no point. Plus with a level cap increase, you would have to have a new tier of gear, which means more grinding and time spent, and no one seems to want that. It seems that those who are advocating a level cap raise are old time vets of other popular MMOs which do have a rising level cap, and a gear grind from the very start, and wish to see such things brought here because “it works in those games”. They can certainly provide a way for more trait points, or even a “heroic” or profession skill tree without increasing the levels and making our hard earned gear obsolete.

I don’t know about dumb, but it seems that he struck Orr as a base of power, and used the resources there to grow in strength. As the Elder dragon of undeath it would make sense for him to seek out such places where death florishes to rise to power. But we do see that he does use other means to increase his power. We have the assassination attempt of Queen Jennah, his attack on claw island, and his attempts at manipulation of the PC and others, and using him champions to hunt down and consume magic artifacts. I don’t see his attack on Claw island motivated out of a mindless sense of “there are lots of people there, plus lots of food.” But rather a calculated strike at a stronghold of those who pose a threat to him.

While it is true that Mordremoth and Jormag use more political means to extend their power, such things would be useless to Zhaitan as he gains power through death. Thus his actions would have to be more martial in nature.

You don`t pull something new, though.

It has been discussed in the dozen of other threads several times.
This piece of information as well as angels quote are allready woven into most discussions.

Sorry to say, but a bit late to the party.

While this is true, in those dozens of other threads it was all speculation. Now that the turth has been revealed, its seeing that quote and bit about Ronan and the tree in a whole new light.

I love my pig!!

Been using it in PvE, PvP, and WvW. As a WvW small group roamer, it has been very helpful. When I first started using it my guildies were all like “What the….!!” A Pig!?" But then I started using my F2 and popping up healing seeds, elixer of heroes, and eggs, and they quickly began to accept it. Plus it looks freaking AWESOME!!!

I call mine Wilbur :P

OOOOO Heres a thought. Some people, not in this thread, have mentioned using this for open world PvP. While that won’t work, what about a special instance thats WvW-like? For example, the Grove is under seige by those bent on destroying the Sylvari. So you basically turn the Grove into a WvW map, or in a similar style of Silverwastes but PvP? You can choose which side you want (attack or defend) and have at it? Matches last say 30 minutes or so, then have a cool down.

Block and/or report them based on the level of harassment. The same as its always been.

True, and I know you can’t make it perfect so that no one will ever be harassed. But will this story line incite more then usual? And is it something that Anet has taken into consideration?

Whether or not their intentions are radical, it’s still going to effect Sylvari players and NPCs alike. They can’t just continue on with Sylvari as normal if the next patch is about “dealing” with the Sylvari as dragon minions. The trailer shows that the Sylvari are going to become the focus, and not in a good way, of the next LS patch. We see at least the Charr hunting them down and the others doing the same thing.

Possibilities for a new playable race

The problem of the Mursaat is that they’ve all been killed off, with the exception of Lazarus, and he is considered MIA. Unless they rewrote the lore on them, and in fact more then Lazarus was still alive and they spent the last ~250 years just breeding and increasing their numbers. I don’t see the Mursaat becoming a player race. MAYBE an enemy, or a final boss of something, but certianly not a faction, or playable race.

All of them, or just the ones that were working with the White Mantle in Tyria? For all we know, there were still more that were phased out of reality.

From what I understand is that there were 8 left after the Titans were released and killed all the others. 7 of those died in The Battle for Lions Arch at the end of the Krytan Civil War. Lazarus was the only known survior, and he “phased out of reality”. Of course they could say that many more also fled before their “extinction” and fled into the mists as well, and have now come back to help fight the dragons. But I don’t see it happening.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, and it’s been confirmed in-game that Sylvari are dragon minions, I’ve noticed (lighthearted) talk about kicking Sylvari in guilds and parties. But even these jests have caused me to think. From the trailer we see the other races hunting down Sylvari. How is this going to effect the players? I know it will be a huge problem for RPers and the like, but what about those who just wanted to play Sylvari? I can see any Sylvari player, RP aside, actually becoming a focal point for harassment. Sure it will mostly be in jest, but there are trolls who will take advantage just to be jerks.

Also, what about Sylvari NPCs? Are they all going to be recalled back to the Grove for their protection? Whats going to happen to the Pact? Will the Grove become off limits for non-Sylvari characters? and the other cities off limits to Sylvari? Will the merchant NPS react differently to Sylvari players?

I do think that such a huge racial upset might actually be the catalyst for introducing factions and alliances. No this won’t be a reason for open world PvP, such a thing would be terrible for this game, especially now. If you’ve identified some players of a certain race to actually be the bad guys, then introduce open world PvP, it WILL be seen as actively endorsing and supporting real world racism. Encouraging killing other players simply based off their race, and nothing more. Which would be a super taboo subject to make part of actual game play. There was an outrage about one of the Resident Evil games, where you are killing African zombies which were portrayed as black people. It’s one thing to talk about it in game, but another to make the game play based on that. Plus, it would really suck to be a new player Sylvari and get hunted down and killed everytime you set foot outside of the Grove.

So what are your thoughts? How will this play out in terms of story and game play as a Sylvari character?

Edit: Removed the harassment statement. Trolls will be trolls and should be blocked and reported as such. Even so, in the light of this new information, it is going to have an effect on Sylvari PCs and NPCs.

And subsequently any kind of release of major content would result in more players and thus more profits. People seem to very readily forget the gem store as a source of income, and believe that the vanilla game is the only thing that profits. I’ll guarantee you this; ANet has made a minimum of 2x its base game revenue from the gem store alone.

No i dont see how a gemstore can give enough money to pay for 300+ employees. Do you think the gemstore gives around 1.5 to 2 million a month?

It’s actually entirely possible. Going by the 3Q2014 NCSoft report, GW2 in royalties made 22,260,000,000 KQW or 20,556,335 USD.

Note: If I am reading this report correctly, the numbers shown are KWN (Korean Won) in Millions as shown on the statements (unit: KWN in MN). However these number reflect NCSoft and don’t show how much of that Anet is getting. But my guess is they are getting enough to cover their expenses and have a profit. Also as this is just royalties, it is unclear if that includes gem sales or not.

While it certainly is possible for it to be a paid expansion, I just can’t see it. If anything it very well could be an expansion, but a free one. Meaning that we get no Living Story/World updates for a time, then the entire season released at once, in the same manner that it is now. If you log in for the first 2 weeks, you unlock it for free. If not, then you can buy it from the gem store at the current rate per episode. Of course this is just my perception of it, but we won’t know anything until the 24th

Unless the dream comes from Ronan amd Ventaris care and teachings via the tablet. Such teachings also allowed for the current Sylvari and Pale Tree to resist Mordremoths influence, thus allowing them to be good. Whereas Malyck came from a tree that didnt have such protection and is a minion, as it was supposed to be.

Try to look at it from the eyes of a beginner guys.

The NPCs award points, and give you a buff. Who wouldn’t want that?

It takes a higher level of understanding of the both the map and conquest mechanics to get that securing mid is important.

How would you guys suggest we go about teaching this to players?

You don’t. Did Anet provide instructions for dungeons? Tips and tricks to beat Lupi? Did you give a list of boss mechanics and how to counter them? No.

Teaching boss/map mechanics should not be taught be Anet at all, whether through pop up tips, or instructables. That burden falls on the players. If someone is interested in learning how the map works, then it’s up to them to seek out other players that will teach them. I know there are guilds that do PvP training and instruction. Just like Dungeon teaching guilds, and WvW teaching guilds.

Anything designed to teach players about a certain map, or boss mechanics put in place by Anet will be viewed as “dumbing down the game”. And it will in fact be just that. Can you imagine, doing your first Arah run, and when you approach Lupi in all his glory, a little cinematic plays and says “watch out for when Lupi raises his hand!” And a little pop up window comes up saying “don’t let him eat the grubs, and dodge the red circles!” Yeah not so much.

this is way off-base. putting a tutorial in-game is not the same as dumbing the game down. we aren’t some secret society hording knowledge for our own exclusivity. that attitude does not belong anywhere near pvp.

There is a difference between a tutorial and walking through specific map mechanics. A PvP turtorial would be more along the lines of: This is how the stats work, what the amulets are, how gear, traits, and objectives work. A walkthrough would be more like: On this map, (say skyhammer) your team needs to control the skyhammer in order to win. Defend Skyhammer at all costs. Also there are certain parts of the floor that look like this (shows picture) If you stand on them for too long they break and you fall through. Don’t forget about the jumping boosters! (shows picture) these will allow to to jump much higher and reach the upper levels where you can gain a significant advantage. For this map, stability and knock backs are going to be vital, so make sure you have some of those available, remember Fear is your friend.

I am not saying we should hold back knowledge at all. If someone comes on and doesn’t know how a certain map works it’s up to the player to ask and to learn. Most people will gladly help out and teach if asked. But that burden is, and should be, on the players. Again, it’s not like Anet gives us any tutorials on dungeons, and specific boss mechanics. If a new player wants to run the dungeon, and learn how to beat the boss, there are plently of people more then willing to teach.

If Anet agrees with you that it’s the player base’s responsibility to teach even basic knowledge of how PvP works, then the least they should do is include an in-game link to the appropriate forum topic/place to actually get help from the player base.

I’m not saying spoon-feed all info to players is necessary, but making the information easily accessible through the in-game UI is the least that should be done.

Basic knowledge of PvP can be done through a simple tutorial. And in fact there is one. Capping points, stomping players, etc. As far as strategies, builds, tactics, map mechanics, No. Those things vary too greatly by player to even be considered to be included in any type of instruction by Anet. Sure they could include a link to the forums for advice, but then it becomes a matter of Anet endorsing X build, or Y playstyle/strategy. (Or at least a perceived endorsment). If anything, just a link to the forums in general for more information would be the best way to go. Let the players seek out which information and advice they need.
