Didn’t you know, op? You’re not qualified to determine what fun is, for yourself is anyone else.

We want more people doing D and E. A, B and C get a lot of attention.

So, now you’ll have to do D and E to get Shiny Thing 1.

There doesn’t need to be any more complicated an explanation than that.

I don’t think thats what the OP was trying to say. After his initial rant, and confusing followups, it turns out that he is basically saying that the rewards from certain content should not be locking a player into a paticular game mode. And that said rewards should either be A) obtainable in other ways/game modes B ) usable for more than one paticular item, and C) at the very least be able to be sold to a vendor, if not the TP.

I can get behind that.

Ok first: I have read the entire thread, and do understand the issue. You want to be rewarded for doing those parts of the game that you enjoy. There is nothing wrong with that. You should be rewarded for doing those things you enjoy. Thats not what I’m saying at all.

Secondly: You stated “All the rewards received from that part of the DEAD STORY are worthless unless you do the fractals also”, “Please answer me as to why we must do other totally unrelated content just to give the large number of hard to obtain story rewards ANY VALUE?” and “I’m not forced to do anything. unless I want the rewards I received from the story to have ANY VALUE.”

In short, you are saying the the rewards gained from the living story are worthless, unless you do an aspect of the game that you don’t like. And because you don’t like fractals, and are not going to do them, then said rewards have no value.

You went on to say “I suspect they could easily make the majority of the story reward items sellable so they would have value…”, which strongly implies that said items will only have value if there is a coin amount attached to them.

So as I see the matter, you feel that the story rewards are worthless and hold no value because it requires you to play a certain aspect of the game. However, “value” is a VERY subjective term, and in this case you seem to be using it as it applies to some sort of monetary amount. I disagree with that sentiment. I propose (again) that these items DO hold value, in that they are tools to have a fun and rewarding (monetary and otherwise) end result.

As stated before, there is little use for necros in a group setting. They just don’t have the DPS or group support other classes can do much better. However, Solo is where necros shine. Condis are king, and melt things FAST, and necros have some awesome single target abilities, that are useless in groups.

Dispite the fact that they were intended as a REWARD, that is exactly what I did because they are valueless.

It would seem in this case, that it all depends on what you deem to be of “value”. To you these items are worthless, as you don’t want to do fractals to get the final item. However, there are also others, myself included, who do find value in those same items. While many of them do not have a coin value attached, the do open up a quest chain that takes you through many aspects of the game. To me, at least, there is MORE value in having a goal to work toward, and recieving a cool item at the end, then just having a coin value attached. Being able to buy the items off the TP cheapens the item, and becomes a case of perceived “Pay to Win”. The same argument is made countless times over the Legendaries being sold on the TP.

Also as a side note. You say you enjoyed the Living Story, yet have referred to it as the DEAD STORY, which strongly implies that you don’t like it, and would rather not play it, or just have it removed from the game.

Aaah gotcha.

I can get that you don’t care for the LIVING STORY, and don’t care for doing fractals to get the one piece needed for the back piece.

However, you are still not forced into obtaining the back piece. It’s not a special reward for doing anything. It’s a side quest, and an optional one at that. If you feel compelled to obtain it, then the fault lies on your end. It’s not required for anything. It only gives a small stat increase, not so much to even be troubled with, and is such a small bonus as it makes no difference even in WvW. It’s not Anets fault. If you don’t like to do certain content, then don’t. It’s simple really. But if you still feel the need to have all the shinys in the game, then you’ll have to accept that there are some things you’ll have to do (read: work) to get it.

I still don’t get what your complaint is…

Are you upset that you didn’t care for the LS, but felt obligated to play it? Or that once you did the LS, you got a bunch of stuff used to craft an ascended backpack that eats bloodstone dust, but didn’t want to do the other aspects of the game to finish it?

I can understand that there were improvements that could be made to the matching algorithm but did this require also the merging of SoloQ and TeamQ. Not sure how this was supposed to help but it surely hasn’t.

I am sure all the work on the algorithm is worth it just restore SoloQ as an option. Most major issues improved instantly.

The shortest version of that story is that we believe there is more value in having an unranked place for people to play. Part of that choice includes the fact we can now modify the servers much more easily and make changes faster.

That doesn’t mean we’re ignoring what people are saying about solo vs premade.

Fixed for you.

So don’t be surprised if such an idea is met with distain, and very few people take it seriously anymore.

Good luck!

The points in there are just dumb.

  • We already have cosmetic mounts: broom, carpet, sonic device. We already have a minor speed “mount”: the Dry Top kites.

That argument should’ve been in the pro side. It is there to show that mounts can work in the game.

Really, the points of Anti-mounts have been:

  • I don’t want it. Since I don’t want it, I don’t want others to want it.

While you may or may not agree with those points, they are the same points brought up in almost every mount thread. Which was the whole point behind that thread. The Author lays out the common arguments for and against.

I agree, having to be in the HotM while waiting for a match is extreamly boring. With the old system, I didn’t mind having to wait for a match, because while waiting, I could go get some map completion done, maybe do some crafting, etc. So while waiting for our team to assemble, we spent about 20 min just hanging out. To the point, where when we finally got our team, nearly everyone was bored and ready to move on to something else. Granted matches started quickly, and that was great. But it was WAY too much down time.

I can understand the concerns of starting a match when people are off doing other things, but what about increasing the time before the match actually starts. As it is now, when you get into the map, there is a 1 minute wait. Move that up to 2 minutes, and include the option of starting the match once everyone checks in. This gives enough time for someone to “port” in from another area, gives more time for organization, and last minute build/character changes, and the ability to bypass that if everyone is all in and ready to go.

Matchmaking Changes: 12/3

in PvP

pdavis.8031

Ok these are my initial thoughts on the new pvp system in regards to team ranked matches. I dont know if it already being covered, but most of what ive seen relates to solos.

So we gathered our team for some pvp. Its the same people we generally play with, and we are decent. Not the greatest, but generally do alright. When we do lose, and we do, more often then id like to admit, we usually put up at least a decent fight. (At least having a score of around 275 if we get beaten badly.) But today, with our team, we seemed to be getting matches where we were completely out classed. Had a courtyard match where we lost 0-500. Just brutally stomped. In almost evey other match we struggled to even get 100 points.

What i am confused about is how team matches are determined. I’ll admit i dont know anything about mmr or if that even plays a role, or how it would, but some of these match ups were way out of our league.

Although i do like the new system, and being able to get into a match easier and quicker, i think it still needs alot of tweaking. Especially in how team match ups are determined.

Edit: I started a thread about this, but I think it fits in better here.

“As for Dev posts, if the thread IS relayed, would a Dev pop in as well to view or communicate? Or is it just the volunteers?[/quote]Yes, ideally the devs will pop in and respond. Forum specialists will be amassing information to allow just that!

The final thing I see being an issue is these people will be basically on the front lines now, taking much of the heat an anger from people, all while doing it for free. Its going to require a very thick skin requirement, as I said before, these people will probably be labeled as “white knights”.

I’m not saying this is a bad idea, but a few details are still missing.

I appreciate what you’re saying, but it would be illogical for anyone to attack a forum specialist. They are not in a position to give an answer, they are in a position to help a dev give an answer, and that’s an entirely positive thing for which I hope they will be appreciated."

While thats true, people around here tend to be VERY illogical. There are still those who insist the game is basically on life support, and no amount of evidence to the contrary while sway them. There are countless threads of people who are adamant that the games economy is utterly broken and hyper inflated, no one works at anet, the is the most grindy game of all time, if mounts and dueling are not added to the game the devs might as well start looking for new jobs, etc.

These people most certainly be attacked and labeled white knights. The best way to avoid this would be to not have specialists tagged in anyway. But then theres no way to tell that our thoughts are being heard unless we see a red post, much like it is now.
just something to consider.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/personal-story-is-all-wrong-out-of-order

This is one of the many threads discussing this issue.

In short, before the NPE patch (as it’s referred to) you would be able to start the story at level 2. After you completed that, the next step was at level 5 (can’t remember exactly but you get the idea), then level 7, then 10. Now all those steps have been condenced into one “block” that starts at level 10. Then the next block is level 20, 30, 40, etc. When moving each story step into the blocks, they accidently moved the wrong story step into the wrong block.

They have stated they are looking into this, and working on a fix, but no ETA was given on when to expect it. My guess is that it got pushed back in favor of the Living Story, and other patches.

@Xukavi

Shaytan can be devil, THE devil and Iblis.
As for the Satan/Shaytan thing, the assumption isn’t quite wrong since Shaytan is the equivalent to Satan. The problem is that Christianity has a very vague concept of what/who Satan is… so I can’t blame anyone. :P

Anyways, while it’s possible that the DSD was ‘named’ by/after Largos who have an arabic theme, IMO it’s even more likely that it was named after the theme of the krait who have a Greek and Latin motif (and prolly threw a ‘ss’ into the name) since it’s been mentioned several times in the game that it awoke in their home.

Though yeah, guess we gotta wait a long time before we find out for real. ;P

Well yea, its not exactly wrong but some people usually take it as a word for word translation and that it means Satan. It is regularly used as the word for Devil or The Devil as you stated and rarely used to refer to Satan himself. Anyways that aside, I do believe that his name would follow a different theme than Arabic.

The term Satan is actually hebrew for Adversary (http://www.bibletopics.com/BibleStudy/164.htm) and while it is primarily associated with “the devil” it can refer to anyone/anything standing as an adversary.

In addition to my previous post, it’s horrible that the dungeon forum is being removed in favor of merging it with “Guild Wars 2 Discussion”! Please reconsider and keep the dungeon forum distinct!

Who made Gods, Giants and Elder Dragons ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

pdavis.8031

Well…in this case the gods might be nothing more than powerful elementalists/mages, that got so powerful that became apparently immortal. On their planet, they took with them several humans, traveled the galaxy then colonized Tyria planet. They also have masters more powerful than them.

Thats essentially what happened. But it’s not limited to magic users specifially. A human was able to ascend to godhood, Kormir (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kormir) and we know that the Six that we know of were not part of the original Panthenon, thus implying that the Six were not the original and had themselves ascended to godhood.

As far as masters more powerful, not likely. More then likely, they replaced their gods through various acts of heroism and self sacrifice, and took their place as one was either destroyed, killed, imprisoned, etc.

Regarding gods…they just created human race. Other creatures existed before, as well as a fauna and flora. I could conclude that gods are similar to dragons. They absorb magic, but don’t release IT. They want instead to worshiped.

Actually the gods didn’t create the humans. They were brough to Tyria by the gods. Which would imply that they came from somewhere else. Maybe even another planet outside of The Mists. We know that the gods themselves came from somewhere else and brought humans with them. From the wiki: “At an unknown time after the writing of the Tome of Rubicon but prior to 786 BE, the Six Gods arrived on the world and brought the humans with them, but from where is not known. Original human legends claimed that the Six Gods created the world, and the charr also have legends of Melandru creating the world, though this has in recent decades been realized to be false. Their age is also unknown, but it is known that the current pantheon as a whole is not the first, and that they have not been on Tyria as long as the Elder Dragons.

The Six Gods arrived on Tyria originally at the Artesian Waters, which is said to hold magic powerful enough to have drawn the gods from the Mists. Dwayna was the first god to walk on the world, and is said to have brought humanity (though where to is conflicting with claims being both south of Cantha as well as Arah) hoping to make the world a paradise. She was followed by Balthazar, Melandru, and the other gods.”

100% disagree. I like puzzles and they are definitely a part of role playing type games and MMO games and always have been, and I do not consider it drivel or absolute garbage. Maybe this is not the game for you.

I agree with CMM. This isn’t a linear dungeon crawl hack and slash. Almost every RPG type game has at least SOME puzzle elements to it. Although there are a few exceptions. (i.e Champions of Norrath, Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms). However, if puzzle type things are not your style, maybe pick a different game mode (PvP, WvW) as this paticular one doesn’t suit your style. There are tons of things to do without having to do anything with puzzles.

That’s basically forum moderators with a special (pointlessly) title. I was moderator for Guru/Guru2’s lore forum for a while. It’s a thankless, and sometimes stressful job where you’re painted more as the villain despite maintaining order and trying to make things simple.

Without pay, I’m not interested in starting that up again. And this just sounds like a bad idea to me, player moderation of official forums will give them a spotlight that can easily get to their head, make people think they’re more important than others, etc. etc.

And to be honest, I don’t think a move is really helpful given how terrible the forum organization is. Even the most committed moderators (I will not call them “specialists”) can only make a dent in the mayhem and in all honesty for the lore forum the only help they’d make is to merge like-minded threads together.

All that aside, I’ve had a bad brush with certain members of Anet the past few months due to my rather adamant criticism about their continuous lore continuity errors that continue regardless of pointing out that they’re making them (can I use any more variations of the word continue!?!). Why the dragons are evil ? There might be bigger forces that controll them. Someone had to create them, and command to destroy.

But that begs the question, are Dragons actually evil? If their purpose is to consume magic, and let it back out slowly while they sleep, can that be considered evil?

Dragons have been likened to being a force of nature. Is a tornado, or hurricane considered evil? Also Dragons don’t operate on the same level as the other sentient races. They have a superior intelligence, and quite possibly a very different sense of morality. They are designed to destroy and consume. By doing just that, it effects the rest of the inhabitants of Tyria and as such are called evil.

It’s really a matter of persective. Consider it like this. You have ants in your house. From the ants point of view, they have found a warm safe place with an abundance of food. However, they are kittenance and a pest in your home, so you want to get rid of them and set traps, poison, and call an exterminator. From the ants perspective, you are destroying their homes, and families, and thus can be considered evil

Questions on the Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialists Program

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

So the forum specialists, in their area of expertise, while not official, will be considered a player “authority” on the subject. Their main purpose would be to collect and send reports about certain subjects to the devs, but are unable to say whether or not they will, or have sent on such information. While I am for this paticular idea, it seems that their hands are tied too much and the title and responsibility are mainly in name only.

They won’t be able to do anything that we, as normal posters, can’t already do. While I can understand that having such people condensing the feedback would make it easier for the devs to look at and act accordingly, this might actually hamper the efforts of the devs communicating with the player base. People like to see a red post. But with this, I feel there will be little to no red posts anymore, and we’ll see the specialists commenting instead of the devs. However they will still be unofficial. There are already instances of the unoffical “specialists” commenting on a certain subject being dismissed, and the OP insisting on a red post to confirm or comment.

Unless the specialists can get a special tag, have the backing of the devs, and be able to confirm that a report has/will be made to the devs about a paticular subject, there really isn’t much that will change.

While I can kind of agree, especially in such areas of the game as PvP and WvW, but having at least a couple of people in the lore sub-forum who can keep track of whats going on, related that to the devs would do wonders to help things stay consistant. There are only a few areas that are somewhat controversial, most of the time its questions about why this is that way, or /tinfiol hat speculation. Some times gets shut down, but others remain in a healthy discusssion.

At the very least we do need someone who is able to communicate with the devs about such lore issues, things that are unclear, retconed, etc. While it may be alot of extra work, I think those who would apply would think it a fun challenge.

I don’t know if anyone has seen this yet, but I know we have a bunch of people here in this forum that are VERY knowledgeable about the lore surrounding the Guild Wars universe. We need those people to become forum specialists. We already have several that are considered “Go-to” people (i.e Konig Des Todes) who need to apply for these. You already do so much awesome and amazing work, and I think that many people would like to see you guys in a more “offical” capacity.

what purpose do condtion builds serve?

in Profession Balance

Condis have always had the same issue: Underpowered in PvE and OP in PvP/WvW

Its not that they are underpowered in pve its just when you get into any sort of group condition builds become almost useless. Take world bosses for example: with a bleed cap of 25, one condi necro can get 20 without even trying. But now you have 50+ people, and almost everyone is added some sort of bleed one way or another, which makes it hit the cap quickly. However with a condi build i can tick bleed at say 150 per tick, but say a warrior adds a bleed that ticks at 50. His tick overrides mine. Each new application removes an old one. And in dungeons, its faster to go direct damage then condi, but the same rules of condi stacking apply. Thats why people dont like condis in pve or dungeons. The current system severely hampers condis in a group of more than 3. But in solo pve condis are awesome and take out mobs fast. Because no one is overriding your condi damage, and actually hurting the dps from condis.

During the LS Seeds of truth, only part of the voice acting plays. Mostly Caiths dialogue. Faolin plays fine, but caiths seems to miss several lines, and will only play about 1/3 of it. Anyone else have this issue?

Malyck is not Sylvari as we know them

in Lore

Ok, so while playing GW1, I came across a statue of Melandru in pre-searing Ascalon.

The description of the statue reads:
“And it was that a tribe of godless humans wandered the land. Where camped did they lay waste, senselessly destroying everything nearby.
And so the tribe set out to find another camp, when suddenly sprouted a wall of thorny branches, which blocked their exit.
Then saith Ewan, leader of the tribe, “Know ye our ways. Whosoever does magic in this tribe shall be put to death.”
Yet none comes forward. Then, from the earth grows forth a large tree, and unfurling its branches, reveals the upper torso of a woman. Saith She, “I am Melandru, the Mother of earth and nature. Henceforth I bind ye to these lands. When they suffer, so shall ye suffer.”
And as She saith, so was it done. From their limbs sprouted branches, and the blood in their veins was the sap of trees. Then was Ewan and his tribe converted, and became they stewards of nature.
— Scriptures of Melandru, 48 BE"

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Melandru

So at some point, Melandru turned a bunch of humans into “tree people”. And they became stewards of nature. We also know that Malyck is a Sylvari that comes from another tree, not our Pale Tree. Or at least that it what is thought…

So I propose that Malyck is actually a decendant of one of those turned into “Sylvari” by Melandru in ages long past. That there is no other tree, it’s just assumed there is, because him being Sylvari, he would need to come from a tree. He, and his people, would not have “the dream”, as they were never born from a tree similar to The Pale Tree.

In any event, I found this bit of lore to be rather interesting, and wondering if there is any connection at all to modern day Sylvari.

Any thoughts?

No.

Only Charr makes sense.

Acually a charr magic user makes the least amount of sense given their aversion to the arcane arts. Hoever some are born with such gifts and the char recognize that and use such talents, but its seen more as a useful tool than anything. But given the option to choose to study it most charr wouldn’t.
From the wiki: “While the average charr is willing to embrace technology, many view the use of magic as a sign of weakness and will distrust magic-users as a whole.”

Condi builds are great in WvW. Most people like to take toughness for a bit of survivabilty, and condis are a great counter to that, as it ignores toughness. And if nothing else, it at least provides a bit of pressure, it’s hard to stay in a fight for very long while you are bleeding heavily.

Gossamer

Seeing how the “too much silk” problem got “solved”, i don’t think you really want gossamer fixed.

I actually like how they solved the silk problem. We need the same for t5+6 leather, mithril and gossamer.

If they did that, then we’d see an over abundance of complaints about the prices of those items. More cries of “inflation”, and how everything was much better before the change. I feel that while the current market bears silk just fine, I don’t think it would hold up for t5-6 leather, mithril, and gossamer as well. But thats just my opinion.

Inflation and Achievement Chests

in Black Lion Trading Co

pdavis.8031

Shadowcat:

You are operating under the assumption that inflation so is overwhelming as to make 15 gold seem useless. John Smith, the games economist, has stated clearly on several occasions that there any inflation there is, is on a small scale and tightly controlled, and that inflation is not something they are concerned about, and monitor VERY closely.

The rise for prices is a simple supply and demand curve. Some items are much more desirable than others, so more people are willing to pay more for it. The TP prices are set by the players themselves. And while Anet sets the drop rate of such items, the players set the price.

So the 15g reward for an achievment chest, while it may seem chump change to you, is actually quite a lot for many others.

I like condi builds. Call me a noob if you want, but I love my condi necro. Even in PvE. Granted it’s value is lessened considerably in a group setting (i.e. dungeons, world bosses) but great for solo. In PvP and WvW is where they really shine though. Most people tend to take higher toughness and vitality in those for a bit more survivability, but the counter to those is conditions. I love taking down bunker builds with stacks of bleed from my necro.

Necromancer uses in PvE?

in Necromancer

pdavis.8031

As much as I love my necro, he only has any sort of use in PvP, and even there there are others who can do it much better. Although solo, a necro can do very well, in a group setting not so much. the main problem is the lack of group support. Yeah, there is some healing to be had, but you sacrifice too much in DPS to even make it worthwhile in a group where killing the mobs the fastest is the safest way to go. But there are very few and situational uses for necro in PvE/dungeons. Thats why most people (at least those in speed clears for dungeons) don’t like them.

Yes, a Sylvari necro makes sense.

From the wiki: "Death too is not fully understood but viewed as something to be embraced and, as with many things in a sylvari’s life, is viewed with a great degree of curiosity. These views serve to form an acceptance of and fascination with death that other races may find disturbing. "
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sylvari

So with this natural curiosity of death, it actually makes more sense for a Sylvari to become a necromancer then say another profession. If I remember correctly there was a Sylvari necro in The Ghost of Ascalon book who chose that path simply to learn more about death.

I found that really weird when I first started playing GW1. Especially when I was able to play my Factions characters on my brothers PC even though he only had Prophecies installed.

I remember how odd It was to get adjusted to mmo’s back then as well. I remember my first time playing an mmo, and after about 3-5 hours playing I started to worry because I couldn’t find the “save” button. XD

Aaaah the days of the save button. I miss those days. Come across something too hard, no matter, just load up where you saved before and continue on your merry way, until you could beat it. But those days are mostly gone, and replaced by the check point/auto save feature, where it saves after certain missions, area, etc.

it´s called a hard mode tho.. ofc it shouldnt be like oh no we failed this event lets surrender.. but it should have a good amount of influence

True, it is hard mode. But the events would have to be scaled for 5 person parties. Have too many mobs, like the wave events, and it could be too overwhelming and too hard to complete. It would have to be a very fine balance.
