See?
This is why they don’t even bother posting. Because when they do people just complain even more than if they were just quiet.

Yup. I agree. I can understand people getting angry and frustrated and wanting to vent because of a lack of response and/or lack of updates (or lack of what they think should be added). But people keep forgetting that any member of Anet dev team are not required to post anything, anytime, ever. Period. Now some (and I know they will) claim that it is a bad business practice, and actually hurts the game. But these same people will also try to claim that because of this, WvW, and the game in general, is rapidly declining, and might as well be dead. Although no one can offer any proof of the actual numbers of people playing, it’s all theory and speculation.

Also I heartily agree with Mark when he said that the toxic and ranting posts are not endearing the devs to comment. As we have seen in the case of Marks posting on the matter. Being straight up called a liar, that everything he said is just PR crap, and that he and the others aren’t really doing anything at all. I don’t know ANYONE who would want to respond to such things, when they know that ANYTHING you say is going to be taken way out of context, that you will only be met with more anger and frustration, because you legitimently can’t speak on whats in development (see: Non-disclosure. A legally binding contract that basically says you cannot speak, write, email, or otherwise communicate on projects that are under development until so released, generally in writing, by the company to do so.). But all that will be seen as a “weak” excuse for not appeasing the masses, or telling them the specifics of what they want to hear.

It could have been that he was reported by uninformed people for botting, and Anet took action. If enough people saw them running from node to node in all the zones, for 12 hours, it sure would look like a bot. I would probably report it too.

They don’t have to disappear. From what I understood, is that those events don’t activate until the story NPC has been talked to. I talked to the NPC, and the event appeared, but it was already almost 50% completed. Of course the boss was there, and people were fighting it, but it didn’t activate as an event for me until I talked to the NPC. Also there was an event where you had to kill a ghost, gash or something. As soon as it was defeated it spawned again. I think that someone else came along and reactivated the event, causing it to spawn once more.

That’s a little… weird though.
I thought people in the open world were supposed to grow and develop. When Mordremoth is dead and gone, why would his tendrils and Mordrem be such a problem for these charr the same way they are now? Assuming the events stay identical forever – which surely they have to as they are part of the story journal. Surely keeping something like this for forever is the same as sticking the Marionette back in the open world?

The instances, however, are like an interactive story book. What you do there doesn’t have to be present day in the open world (e.g. dungeon dialogue, personal story). I assumed they were going to keep everything that is journal and story based instanced, keeping any open world content not vital to the story (and just supporting content), and therefore this supporting content being able to be removed and changed without effecting the story we (and future players) play.

Not really, the stuff going on in the open world in general, with the exception of LA and maybe a few others, are supposed to be at a time during the PS or before it. Its the same reason we dont see Orr cleansed even though it happened in the PS. Timewise, whenever we go to Orr the pact have just started to arrive and are kind of stuck in that time. All pre the events of season 1. Konig in the lore forums explains it much better. :P

Although they could keep it open world for the duration of the episode and change it to an instance upon launch of the next episode. That might work to keep the continuity, and avoid confusion.

Mordy was making a move on Ascalon, and the sword was used to channel the ghosts energy.

Actually, at the Outpost in front of the roots in Iron Marches you can speak to two Priory members who go on ranting about how their dolyak was struck. They say the roots came out of the ground reaching up to snag it and it was wounded severely. Guess what it was carrying…. artifacts. They even mention they sent someone on ahead with whatever the artifact was in order to continue the journey.

Pre episode 3? Hmmm I guess I missed that…

I just don’t see it happening, and it would be WAY too complicated to do anything like that, as it would negate the entire GW1 game and everything in it, as well as totally mess with this game. Yes it’s up to the writers, and as far as I know we havent dealt with time travel yet. Although it would be cool to have something like that, a totally changed timeline as part of the LS season 2 story arch….

We did have time travel actually……though in a completely “for the lulz” April Fools event in GW1

Also, isn’t there an Asura PS that involves you fighting yourself from a possible future?

Hmmm interesting. I didnt know about the gw1 thing :P and I don’t know about the asura thing….it might be possible

My only issue is I thought they’d moved away from this open world format because of how it didn’t work with the journal (e.g. season 1 was very open-world, and thus cannot be implemented into the journal without work).

How is this part of the story going to work when we move on? I thought all the storyline content was instanced so that players in a year or two can come back and play the story the same way we did. But these events have to disappear eventually, so how is this going to work?

They don’t have to disappear. From what I understood, is that those events don’t activate until the story NPC has been talked to. True, but if iirc, Rytlock did say that the tomb was a place of power and a good place to “test” if his plan would work…

I really can’t help but think these are an easter egg reference to the ancient Tada Oh Corporation of Earth and Beyond, and even before. EA was beset by Llamas back then generally, I think it started in early Sims/Maxis.

I hauled a “crate of Llamas” all over the galaxy. The EVE Tada Oh Corp had Llama as well.

Sim city (the original) had Llamas everywhere. The newspaper stories were funny. About airplanes in south america crashing and killing 25,000 llamas….

aaaah those were good times…

question about karma

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: pdavis.8031

pdavis.8031

Do low level fractals while at a high level yourself

specifically; do fractals that are 10 levels below your personal level. and the higher level you do, the more karma. so the highest is getting your personal level to 50, then running level 40.
but, when you incorporate how quickly it takes, the best is to just get your personal level to 30 and run level 20. this gives 8,000 karma per run, and each run takes about an hour.

the next-highest karma income would be following a good commander with a large zerg in EotM (which also gives more loot that’s used in legendary crafting)

Exactly. Also don’t forget to use any karma boosters near the end of the final boss for maximum karma. At fractal level 7, and personal reward level of 17, you can easily get +10k karma per run.

This is part 1. Some of the design of the open-world events could be improved, but the story is definitely intriguing. None of us predicted we’d revisit the story of Ascalon. Who knows what will happen to Rytlock in the Mists?

I’m waiting for part 2 to see if any of these questions will get answered.

I agree, although I would point out that the return to Ascalon and it’s story WAS predicted and discussed at length in the Lore forums. I myself made a prediction, and was only about half right.

In any case. I enjoyed it. I liked the open world events that were trigged by the LS instead of just there. Although the massive zerg took away much of the experience, I think after a bit, and it dies down, I think they could be really fun.

Yeah I’m leaning more towards his failing to cleanse the Foefire as well. Or at least not fully cleansing it. I don’t think they would remove one of the main mechanics of an entire region covering several zones. Look at the cleansing of Orr. In the story it was cleansed, but there are still risen everywhere, operating as normal. The main reason is that the open world is generally locked in a state BEFORE the events of the PS. Althought they could have Rytlock succeed, but we won’t see the effects of it as players, unless it was in an instance as part of the LS, which takes place AFTER the PS. Also it would be cool to go back to Orr and begin to see it cleansed as part of the LS, but not in the open world. It would totally ruin the continuity.

1) Not going to happen.
2) Cool, one in a million precursor drop. What’s next?

1)Are you saying that you, or anyone, would NOT be genuinely excited about a precurser drop from RNG?
2)If it is 100% guaranteed drop from completing a quest chain, then it is no longer a rare one in a million drop.

Because with enough time everyone can get it.

Wrong. And that is the problem i have with it.

edit: Oops i misread but only egotistocal people think that way. I’m not trying to 1 up others in this game by showing something someone else cant have due to rng and not even skill or dedication.

But with RNG, even account bound RNG, everyone has an equal chance of getting the item. They are not required to do a special quest line, or activity in order to get it. RNG is the great equalizer. It puts everyone on the same playing field.

Also I can see the frustration of account bound items, and not being able to trade them to family or friends, but at the same time that person has the same chance that you do to get those items.

Yes ofc everyone has the same chances it doesnt change the fact that rng still sucks(its not great, why would you say that) becuase it creates frustration, and imbalanced grinding(some get right away soem never get it). You know, earning something over time or doing a quest is equal for everyone too…and it doesnt create frustration or resentment so lets put that in instead of pure rng.

I never said it was great :P Yes it can be a cause of frustration. But RNG vs. quest based items causes those items to have more value, than just be given the item. If, say Dusk, was locked behind a quest, what would the value, emotional or monetary, be? Just like it’s said that being able to buy a Legendary, or precurser, already lessens the value of them, and makes it feel less than legendary. Yes RNG can be a pain in the kitten, but the reliefe/joy/emotional connection to getting the item is far more than if you just got the item from doing a quest or two. The first is “WOOT!!! I got Dusk!!!! /dance /laugh /cry” and you are literally excited. Elevated heart rate, a big smile on your face, etc. Getting it from a quest is more “Meh…cool…whats next?”

Moreover the frustration comes from impatience and a sense that “I deserve this item, so why am I not getting it?”

How is having quest gated items, that has a 100% “chance” of getting that item at the completion of the quest chain make it so that not everyone get obtain it? If you have a persistant quest line, much like the PS, that everyone can do, then eventually everyone will be able to get that item. Of course they are not required to do that quest, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be able to get it.

RNG has played an intergal role in almost all RPGs. From D&D to most computer based RPGs (online multiplayer games, to offline single player games). As a GM for a tabletop RPG, all the drops are RNG based. Granted I do have the ability to award a certain item if I desire, like a special amulet that is required for the next stage for example. Even if there are some games that have BiS gear, or story gear, locked behind a series of events or mini games, there is still much that is locked behind RNG. So why shouldn’t this genre, or game specifially, not have RNG locked items? Have an extensive quest to get a certain item in my mind lessens the overall value of said item. Because with enough time everyone can get it. It then becomes a common item with little value to anyone. Keeping items RNG based increases the value, and the satisfaction of getting such an item, much higher.

@OP

As it’s been said, Beserker is not a build. It’s a gear stat. Specifially +Power, +Precision, +Ferocity. However, having this gear does make it the most optimal for physical damage based builds. While there are gear sets that can do decent amounts of physical damage (aka Assassins, Valkryie*) they are not going to do as much as Beserkers. Period. Also if you are running a pure condition build you would be stupid to use Beserker gear. You’d be better off using Carrion, Rabid, or Dire. But, as been said, conditions lose alot of effectiveness in groups, and in a group setting would be VERY situational at best. While I am not a fan of “Zerkers or GTFO”, I do agree it is the MOST optimal for physical based damage builds.

*Note: While you can claim all day long that Valk gear is utterly useless, and does no where near the amount of damage as Beserkers, I would still contend that it falls into the catagory of phsyical damage gear stats. Of course it’s not as good as Beserkers or Assassins, but thats not the point I am trying to make.

Now i’m not a tp pro, but i’m curious if its intended that costs are going up so much, like say, a vial of powerful blood costing 60 silver. Considering that gold income from actually playing the game hasnt increased even close to as much as those prices the last 6 months, is anything going to address this? I’m aware that a player driven economy is supposed to “fluctuate”, but for a casual player who doesnt want to flip on the tp all day long to afford things its getting pretty disheartening.

I understand your frustration. However, as you said, the TP is player driven. The main reason that all the T6 mats are going up in price is due to their demand. More people are crafting legendaries, or Ascended. Also, Vials of Powerful blood are even more in demand then the other T6 mats because it is used for “beserker” armor. With Beserker stats being the most desirable for DPS builds, people are crafting and selling and making a nice little profit. Also I believe that less people are farming for T6 mats, prefering to buy off the TP as needed. So the demand is slightly higher than the supply. But in the end, the farmers are making out fairly well, as the suppliers/sellers can raise the price to meet that demand.

The Curse...

in Lore

After watching the trailer, and reading Reddit and the forums on the matter, I’ve developed a theory as to what it was that Rytlock was doing in the trailer.

There is a book in Entangled ‘Magical Grounding versus Magical Flow’ by Scholar Abel.
That says": “The theoretical treatise discusses the control of magical energy as it applies to ghosts. Scholar Abel of the Durmand Priory theorizes that ghosts are just magical energy constructs. Because of this, they can be grounded as lightning can, or channelled as electrical surges can. The entire second half of the work is his complaint that no one takes his theories seriously."

So my theory is this. A champion of Mordremoth appears in Ascalon, being drawn to there by the magical energy of the ghosts, as well as the magic of the flame legion. Mordremoth decided to tap into that energy, as well as strike a blow to the Charr, as their magitech/tech was instrumental in taking out Zhaitan. So he sends his champion to deal with it. Our band of heros, DE and DE 2.0 discover this, and head to Ascalon to see whats up. Using Scholar Abels works, and his theories, it’s discovered that Rytlocks sword, Sohothin, can act as a lightning rod of sorts that can be used to channel the magical energies of the ghosts in Ascalon and directed at Mordremoths champ. So thats what see Rytlock doing in Duke Barringtons tomb. Using the sword to channel/harness that energy. The sword being a powerful Orrian artifact, it just might be capable of doing such things.

Now Rytlocks words, “Ascalon, I free you from this curse”, don’t have to refer to The curse of the Foefire. But could in fact refer to the corruption/curse of Mordremoth effecting Ascalon. Or it could be that by channeling the ghostly energy, it would be removing the ghosts from Ascalon. However, for the sake of continuity, after the energy was used, and dissipated, it would revert the ghosts back into their forms once more, as an unforseen outcome. Rytlock, and everyone else, would think that after using the ghosts energy Ascalon would be freed from the ghosts, hence his statement about freeing Ascalon from the curse, but in fact, it didn’t.

I love how the discussion changed from what Rylock was doing with the sword in Barringtons tomb, to whether or not King Adelbern was insane, to who the Lore writers were/are. :P

Just another thought:

Would Dark Energy be an even better analogy for Aether?
“The simplest explanation for dark energy is that it is simply the “cost of having space”: that is, a volume of space has some intrinsic, fundamental energy"

So basically the Aether would be the energy that is “between” and “holding” everything together. Yes Dark Energy is much more complex than this, but at it’s core its the idea that there is no “empty” space. Even the space between electrons and protons would consist of “Dark Energy”. Thus the Aether, like the force, is what holds and binds everything together. Think of it like the entire universe, and everything in it, is inside a giant bowl of Jello. That Jello could be said to be dark energy, or in Tyria, Aether.

@pdavis, apparently i didn’t make it clear enough that i liked the use of analogies… i merely said that using the right ones would be even better… and after that i merely explained what the reality of things was. Not so much to say ‘hey Anet you are wrong’ but to say: ‘Hey reader, if you didn’t know, this is how it works’…

On Darkmatter and the Higgsfield, darkmatter is (to me anyway) nothing more than an hypothesis. Nothing of yet is proven… And yes the Higgsfield is something that ‘may’ be proven and is baffling as a litter of kittens (aka. as a more amateuristic physics enthusiast im still trying to wrap my head around it). Still though the Higgsfield provides the possibility for matter to interact with gravity through the application of mass. In a fairly similar way as how the Ether apparently provides a medium through which magic can interact with the physical world. Hope you somewhat see the similarities…

Darkmatter on the other hand, well, it’s nothing like how ether would function, it’s just some elusive hypothesis that can be used to explain certain effects that are viewed. Now in that sense sure Ether may just be some hypothetical something that is used to explain certain behaviour of magic, and as Darkmatter might be proven wrong, Ether might also be proven wrong… Yet, due to the origin of Ether, from early day science, the possible existence of it as a medium to facilitate magic and it’s interaction with the physical world, resembles the Higgsfield much better than Darkmatter ever will.

And seeing that a lot of people wont understand exactly what darkmatter is (heck most scientist don’t even know, and quite possibly because it may not even exist). Using it doesn’t make things easier to understand, at least not ‘more easy’ thkittening the Higgsfield would…

True about the dark matter/Higgsfield approach, however I still maintain that more people have a generalized idea of what dark matter is (or may be) than a Higgsfield. As more people have likely heard about dark matter, if only in vague references, than a Higgsfield. I myself have never heard the term Higgsfield until this thread, but have a VERY limited understanding of what darkmatter is (or may be). So while using a Higgsfield analogy may be more accurate, it would confuse more people then it would help them.

After all, what is the point of an analogy if the reader (or student) doesn’t understand the concept being presented?

I can control the price on market of small quantity goods. For me it is not important if product is not going to sell, because i love to control the market.

I can buy 7 Enameled Anamnesis Dye and put their price from 230 to 400 gold.
And someone who wish to be collector will buy it after waiting for prices to drop, which will never happen because someone will control the market… Can I get a ban for doing that ?

You can set the sell price at whatever you want, but it will only sell to the highest buy price regardless of what you set it at. So if you set the price to 400g no one will buy it at 400g, but will place a buy order for much much lower, say around 230g. So even if you were able to have all the enameled dyes, and no one else could ever get them, you won’t be able to sell it at 400g unless people were willing to buy it at that.

Take Ambirite Sheets. The first one made was listed on the TP at 300g or something. I made one, and tried to sell it. It only sold for ~80s or something because that was the highest buy order.

So again you can only sell something for whatever price someone is willing to pay for it. Listing an item at 400g doesn’t mean it will sell for 400g.

Now hordering items so no one else can get them is impossible, as there is always a source of supply. Unless the collector in question has more money than brains, and is impatient/doesn’t care. But there will be others who can, and will, supply the very same thing.

What do you mean by manipulating? Buying out the thousands (or hundreds in the case of precursers) and jacking up the price to sell back? While it may work, I don’t think that many would sell at whatever inflated price you set them at. Most people, especially when buying in bulk, will place buy orders, which can be way off from the highest sell order. So lets say you want to be all the T2 mats, and mark them up say 200% and resell them. They won’t sell at that mark up, but at whatever the highest buy order is, which would fall more in line with the “actual” price. But even so, it’s impossible to fully corner the market on anything, as you are not the sole supplier.

LS2 Ep 3, Rytlock > Foefire

in Lore

Also this:

“I feel stupid for just now realizing why Rytlock is curing the curse on Ascalon this next patch. There was a flavor book in this patch or the last talking about how ghosts whether they have consciousness or not are just magical constructs. Beings of pure magic, and Mordremoth’s tendrils are traveling around the world underground attacking places with magical artifacts or waypoints. Mordremoth’s tendrils are going to try and gangbang Ascalon for all the magic that makes up the ghosts and flame legion stuff there.”
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2bm3zb/rytlock_in_the_next_patch/

It could be very likely that Mord is heading to Ascalon next, because of the magical energy of the ghosts, and Rytlock is going to attempt to use the sword to either channel the ghostly energy back at Mordy (or his champion) as a weapon, or the harness it for future use. Rytlock uses the phrase “free you from your curse” not because he is actually lifting the curse, at least in the technical sense, but rather gathering or directing of the ghostly energies to be used as a weapon. Thus, not only freeing Ascalon from the ghosts presence, but fighting mordy as well.

Edit: Continuing along this line of thought, it may be brought up that removing the ghosts would create problems with the DE’s and stories in Ascalon involving ghosts. However, I would think that magic being energy, and energy being unable to be destroyed, that after the ghostly energy would be used as a weapon of some sorts, that same energy would dissipate and reform back into the ghosts. That way there would still be ghosts in Ascalon for game mechanic purposes, and would fit in with my theory. But would seem as an unforseen reaction. To which neither Scholar Abel or Rytlock, had accounted for.

LS2 Ep 3, Rytlock > Foefire

in Lore

pdavis.8031

So I just found this:
“The theoretical treatise discusses the control of magical energy as it applies to ghosts. Scholar Abel of the Durmand Priory theorizes that ghosts are just magical energy constructs. Because of this, they can be grounded as lightning can, or channelled as electrical surges can. The entire second half of the work is his complaint that no one takes his theories seriously.”

Taken from a book in Entanglement ‘Magical Grounding versus Magical Flow’ by Scholar Abel.

So instead of Rytlock, or Barrington, or whoever, breaking the curse with the sword, Rytlock is using the sword more as a “lightning rod” as way to deal with the ghosts, even as a temporary measure, so they can have unfettered access to Ascalon City for whatever reason….

thoughts?

Well fist, Dragons don’t just eat magical items, the devour magic in general. Also the term “item” implies a inanimate non-sentient object. So no, heroes cannot be considered magical items. And you could be stark nekkid and still use magic. Of course having weapons/armor/jewelry enchances your use of magic, but it’s not restricted to having such things in order to use magic.

If you buy the gear with ingame gold you deserve it because you play a lot and if you buy it with gems Anet deserves it for making a great game.

Regarding the pay to win issue – having a legendary doesnt make you a winner.
I saw this guy once with like 3 Legendaries infront of arah, so i asked him if he soloed lupi yet and he didnt!

Of course it’s not “Pay to win”, and even if you did spend thousands of dollars in gems, and bought 3 of everything in the gem store, and converted them to gold, it STILL wouldn’t be pay to win. But it’s all about peoples perception. Many people feel that being able to buy a legendary (even though the stat boost isn’t THAT much, nor gives you an unfair advantage over anyone else.) makes the game “pay to win” But seeing as how this game is all horizontal progression, there is no way it can be pay to win, but there are those who refuse to see that, and are upset that some people can swipe a credit card and have all the shineys that they want.
