People who left becouse of lack of gear progression will come back.
For a 2 days. They will grind another tier and leave again.
People who are not interested in gear progression would play this game for months. And now they might leave.
I can’t see the reason in this..

Or they will get their ascended rings in a couple runs of fractals before even fully clearing the place and think to themselves…“well that was easy…I complained over that?”

I find it slightly ironic is that the “farm for looks” crowd with the announcement of a miniscule stat increase on ascended armor now all the sudden turns into the “all gear is obsolete” crowd.

It generally works fine in all games.

In most MMOs you need a certain stat threshold for progression purposes.

Agony is no different than requiring your main tank in WoW have a certain amount of health, block, dodge, armor, etc…

And agony is built into the dungeon itself, meaning to get good at the dungeon, you need to run that dungeon. Unlike other games where you’re grinding gear for the next tier of content.

Other than Arenanet stating so, that is. But other than them saying so, yes, there’s no basis. I mean, aside of them saying so.

I’ll wait while you dig up Arenanet saying exotic gear is supposed to be best in slot.

It is a premise that has no basis in fact.

At the rate they are going to introduce ascended gear, it’s not even going to feel like a gear grind.

Legendary armor is even worse, another tier on the gear threadmill.

They have specifically stated legendary gear will always be best in slot.

Exactly. So first you grind exotics, then you grind Ascended, then you grind Legendary and then you grind skins?

Bah.

Legendary quality already exists.

And no one said exotic was going to be end all be all.

And if you check the wiki, crafting legendary armors have been datamined, so legendary armor is already on the horizon.

In fact it’s very hard to find good exotic rings and back pieces other than crafting.

Your exotics that you spent farming up aren’t getting replaced until maybe a year down the road. But by that point we will have craftable legendary armors so it won’t make much of a difference on a “gear grind”.

And the rings are unique so you can’t wear 2 of the same type of ascended rings.

Talk about a knee jerk reaction over basically nothing that is going to affect the game other than dungeon runs.

Read the entire post. It’s not just rings and a back piece.

Rings and a back piece are all that’s coming out with Lost Shores.

Here is the actual quote:

" In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content."

You guys are acting like its the end of the world when things like chest pieces probably won’t be available for a year.

Rift is doing just fine….

SWTOR certainly isn’t.

I reactivated the other day to have a quick look at how it had progressed and there is a tiny list of servers after many server merges.

Whether it’s still profitable is another story of course. Less players means smaller costs for servers, bandwidth, customer support, etc.

I didn’t say anythiing about SWTOR though… *but they are going F2P this Thursday so they will be getting a population boom and it might even save it!

Rift still is doing quite well. Heck so is Lord of the Rings Online because of their successful F2P model.

So there are “WoW Clones” out there and doing well.
Just sayin!

That really depends on what you mean by “doing well”.

Everybody knows that Rift is just a place for people who have grown to despise Blizzard, but still love WoW. It has no unique identity.

All F2P games will retain some kind of player base.

I actually love Rift.

It at first was my “anti-WoW” but Trion has done a pretty awesome job.

Rift is how a subscription based MMO should be run. The amount of content Rift has added in a year is almost as much as a full blown expansion.

Meaning instead of 9 paths being completely random, it will be 8 paths that are random and the final path set in stone.

If the paths are locked, I think the key to unlocking them is the new infusion stuff.

It supposedly has 9 “paths”.

So you probably have to do the first 3 paths to get infusions to open up a 4th path which in turn opens up a 5th and 6th up until you can unlock the last path. So it’s like a mechanism to force players to do the content rather than just zerg to the final boss.

This is all just speculation of course.

That not long at all and you people are all complaining omg rofl. Some of you must have never even attempted Arah there is no way you have. If your complaining about 15 min to 40 min then there is no hope here.

Fractels sounds ginormous.

It has 9 mini-dungeons. So each of those mini-dungeons take about 20 minutes a piece.

To be honest this whole giving info through 3rd party site reeks of probing the playerbase and that they have 2 ways of handling the situation depending on the reaction of the playerbase /tinfoilhat

Also this doesn’t really sound like infusion the way it was done in GW1. Even if in the end the result is the same. In GW1 infusion was a story mechanic that everyone doing the story experienced when doing Prophecies. This on the other hand feel like segregating the community. Segregation is bad.

The infusion mechanic sounds almost exactly the same.

The Lost Shore dungeon is huge so they probably designed a nice story around how you have to infuse your armor as you trek inwards so you can defeat the Karka.

So, it’s 1) a dungeon that gets harder the further in you go and Anet is already known for difficult dungeons.

2) Drops Ascended gear which is more powerful than exotics. Both in stats and ability to infuse it with stuff.

3) Is meant to prepare people for harder content that comes later.

How is this not a dungeon gear grind like every other MMO out there? You know, the ones you (Anet) originally were trying to be better than.

The new Lost Shores dungeon is supposedly massive and has 9 mini dungeons in it.

This infusion business is probably a way of content progression, not gear progression.

i.e. You have to do some parts of the dungeon before you can rush to the big final boss.

Ascended armor sounds like:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Infusion

If so, lol at all the people flying off the hinge about how this isnt like GW1.

Infusion in GW1 only offered protection against one OP skill used by Mursaat mobs. If Infusion in GW2 works similarly against this new race, then I don’t mind it.

On the other hand, I may have an issue if Infusion provides some sort of a benefit across the whole game.

Edit: One of the biggest draws to GW1 for me was the fact that I didn’t have to grind for armor to remain competitive. I could stop playing for 6 months, come back and still be able to do virtually anything.

If GW2 is going to adopt a gear treadmill model like WoW and I’ll have to grind for gear after every break I decide to take, I probably won’t be sticking with the game for too long.

The ascended armor sounds like it’s the way you kill karka, but again that’s only speculation not fact.

People need to unrustle their jimmies and just wait for Arenanet to clear the air or wait for the patch notes.

Too much speculation, not enough facts.

For all we know ascended gear is nothing more than the legendary equivalent for armor.

idk how you can miss in any of these articles that ascended gear is explicitly better in stats and has infusion item slot that increases stats further is explicitly stated.

there is no speculation on these points.

And?

There is nothing saying that this gear is going to be easy to obtain. There is nothing saying that there is going to be anything beyond ascended.

“Ascended” could simply mean the quality of the gear, not a tier of gear in an MMO gear grind.

“Ascended” gear might be Guild Wars 2 equivalent of Guild Wars 1 prestige armor.

Again, so much speculation, so little hard facts.

Go read the articles before you think you can intelligently contribute to a discussion.

Read the articles and all it is is speculation.

So all this knee jerk reaction is is speculation of speculation.

Bringing some GW1 flavor to GW2

piitb.7635

First I want to say I love GW2. Easily one of my favorite games of all time.

I also want to say, I love GW1. GW1 to me is one of the most revolutionary games to date. It was so revolutionary it was way ahead of its time. And honestly GW1’s design is a winning design for a dungeon crawler.

So Arenanet should do some justice to GW1’s legacy! So Arenanet should consider adding some things into GW2 that made GW1 so great.

First, capturing skills is can be completely viable in GW2. Obviously this won;t work for weapon skills. But this can work for utility and elite skills. Imagine having random mobs spawn that have capturable elite skills that can not only be class specific but usable by anyone.

Next, GW1’s map system. This was obviously one of the biggest changes from GW1 to GW2. But GW1’s map system can be implemented in certain instances, without harming GW2’s persistent world. My idea is make “explorable zones” These zones are the most desolate places in Tyria away from the main zones. Like for example, having a set of GW1 type maps in Maguuna Wastes. And players can go and explore and if they leave the map resets.

And last, GW1’s end game zones, like underworld and sorrow’s furance, need to make a come back. They can be considered hard mode zones. They act like regular GW2 zones, but all mobs are of veteran difficulty and higher so it takes a group to do these zones. And these end game zones have a higher drop rate of magic items, crafting materials and unique items.

GW2 is not living up to its potential

GW1 is an amazing game.

It’s very hard to top it with the things it did well.

That being said, imo, they could bring back some things from GW1.

They can make “explorable” zones that reset every time you exit.

They can bring back capturing skills that fill in the utility slots.

They can bring back stuff like the underworld and Sorrow’s Furnace and have them be hard mode zones.

Just got to give them time.

Orr there is so much going on with DEs and when they are available and where they are in their progression, it would be nice to see this somehow.

Opening up the map doesn’t tell anyone what DE’s are happening unless you’re close enough.

There should be a zone announcement or something that can point people in the right direction of which direction DEs are “traveling” in. The thing I find the most frustrating is I have to constantly warp to way points to figure out just what is going on in the zone.
