Diversity!

redslion.9675

The fact is that Diversity isn’t granted by the game mechanics, but is forced by devs.

Let’s use WoW as an example: in theory, it had a high build diversity pre WotLK thanks to 71 talent points. In thruth, balance FORCED you into investing heavily in one out of 5 trees, thus narrowing down the builds to 3, with very few variatons, for build defining talents were deep in the tree. Take paladins as an example: Before Wrath of the Lich King, you could build paladin as a tank, a healer or a melee dps. But there was also a very odd burst focused hybrid (shockadin) whe acted more like a caster/healer pvp hybrid. Blizzard decided they didn’t want such a build in the game and made sure the build could not be achieved.

Morale of the story: as a dev, you have to predict which build types can be achieved, and then decide which should be effective and which shouldn’t.

I really don’t care if somebody sucks because they can get better, but why the hell would you play your first few matches in tourney pvp and not hot join….

2) That hotjoin teaches someone how to play tourneys correctly. Hot join is a mindless zerg match with no teaching involved. The players learn the maps sure, but they still don’t realize that four capping one point doesn’t make it cap faster, they don’t realize that going far at first is a bad idea. The point system makes them feel like capping the most points makes them the best player, and that defending the point gets you nothing. Hotjoin actually enforces bad habbits not good ones.

It shoul teach you at least what you can or cannot do.

Example: if you can’t kill npcs in Forest of Niflhelm, you shouldn’t try it in a tournament. Because a missing teammate who failed at what he was trying to do is something that must be avoided as much as possible.

It’s not nice when you see your teamates going to svanir only to get downed/killed and wasting a lot of time, while the rest of the team is outnumbered/slaughtered.

Messing with the knight's amulet in spvp

in Warrior

Posted by: redslion.9675

redslion.9675

Hi everyone, I noticed they add another amulet in pvp, other than Cavalier and Magi: Knight’s Amulet, that has Toughness as a major stat, and power/precision as a minor stat.

I wanted to see if it could work with warrior builds, so I tried these 2:

http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-sg-o;1NKVP0a4gL-60;9;4J-J-T28;218;257AINl3L;1G3G3G3G38e

Classic GS/LB build, for someone that never got used to Frenzy and Bull’s Charge (I don’t like relying on long cooldown skills).

And this one:

http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-sg-o;1NKVP0Y4gL-60;9;4TO;0E28A29;55;0Iol3S;1H7W3H7W38r

This was something fun I used to play with zerker amulet: full glass cannon, full stacked on GS damage and Might to see dumb numbers.XD I wanted to see if with Knight I could add some tankiness.

What I got:

1. You are forced into power runes, and probably also investing into strenght, to reach a decent amount of power (1900/2000)
2. There is some crazy damage going around these days, eles are more frequent, Ranger pets are brutal, but worst of all is condition. You have much more armor compared to zerker, but you also have 4k health less. That is much more evident in the second build, where I don’t have nor cleansing Ire nor dogged March. 1v1ing necros becomes a pain.
Morale of the story: yay for direct damage defenses, nay for condition vulnerability. This means you need to invest more into condi cleanse.

What can be done

First build: change runes of the scholar to runes of Hoelbrak, add Signet of Stamina instead of Dolyak Signet.

Second build:

There are some options here

A) Give up stability for signet of stamina (and then guarding your bunker)
B) Give up FGJ for signet of stamina: probably as of now we can stack enough might without needing it.
C) Give up 10 points into strength to get Dogged March in defense. We’d drop below 2000 power, but we have might stacking, so it won’t matter much, while we might able to fend off Necros more easily, and use the aoe from LB to its full potential (or use Axe instead of LB)

What do you think?

Is there someone alse who tried messing around with this amulet?

AOE them since they aren’t great without their minions. Kite, because minion AI is still bad, and CC the necro, because they are still the biggest source of damage and likely have no way of dealing with it. Also dodge the golem charge.

Been eating this build up with my condimancer since I started tpvp a few days ago.

I’ve seen them breaking out of immob pretty easy, though.

Ask Vassangel how to handle MM with GS. He does just fine. Amazing warrior.

He often players GS/LB, but has done well with other builds too. Remember, MMs are very weak against CC so Skullcrack GS builds usually do well too +/- some leverage, don’t expect to win every fight, obviously… MM are still built around 1v1, that’s what they’re there for. Remember, where you’re often good in 1v1 AND teams, MM don’t quite have that luxury. (Nor mobility!)

You can’t have everything. If MM suddenly became weak in 1v1 it would serve 0 purpose in the ENTIRE game, and for people who support that notion A.) don’t care about actual game balance, and B.) have no idea what makes MM fun and interesting in the first place and are likely nubs who cry about anything that beat them.

There are ways to beat them, and there are options, but remember their WHOLE game is around 1v1 for side-points. Learn to deal with it or just rush them, they’re not very great against multiple targets because they don’t have any cleave and can’t secure stomps very well at all.

Ok, thanks, I’m playing GS/LB, but maybe the build isn’t cut for the job.

I wasn’t crying, I wanted to know if I was doing something wrong, and how could I improve. I understand there’s something some classes cannot do.

I might actually go back to Skullcrack/GS, maybe it’s time I let the longbow go.

I was in teamqueue with epic pvers in forest of Niflhelm.XD

First attempt at Svanir: at the beginning of the fight, a thief goes to kill svanir, and gets killed. The rest of the team follows him. I die with another guy to the enemy team at mid.

Second attempt: I see THREE people killing Svanir, no enemy around. One is DOWNED.

Ok, I play GS warrior, not going to hambow.

I didn’t fight many MM necros actually, but from what I got while in a 1v1 I have to keep this in mind

A: If I try to pressure them in melee with their minions up, I’ll get outlasted.

B: If I try to kill the minions in melee, I’ll get outlasted.

What seems to work is to either kite the minions and kill them (question: do minions gay necro’s toughness?) or try to use hit and run techniques, that work when you are losing health faster than the enemy to gain time.

Example: get close to the enemy and whirlwind through them, then gain distance and repeat, and whittle them with the longbow.

But if I go like this, I will lose a notable amount of time, that just isn’t worth it. Am I right?

Here is how to find out:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vIAQFAsA9dr9CAOPAYKAA-TkAg1CqIwRhjDHDOScs4MIA

Make a build with these elements (ADD NO OTHER SOURCE OF CRIT CHANCE, AND DON’T USE THINGS THAT ACTIVATE FURY), put the banner down and start attacking the golem.

If you see a non crit attack, the trait is broken.

Heres why: with banner active and without blademaster, you reach 92% crit chance. With blade master, you go above 100%. If you see a non crit attack, that means your crit chance is below 100% -> the trait doesn’t work. If it doesn’t, you should expect a non-crit once every 12.5 strikes.

That’s why you shouldn’t add more crit chance: you risk to go above 100% without blademaster. Or have a chance without it that it’s so near to 100% you’d need A LOT of hits to see the difference.

It’s difficult to grasp how much better Warrior passive healing is without actually playing a warrior. You don’t actually need a burst heal. For starters, your health pool is so much larger than a Guardian’s that you effectively start the fight with one free burst heal already built into your HP. Secondly, you have so many tools in PVP for either disengaging from the fight or preventing your enemy from hitting you, that any moment the enemy is not hitting you they are losing traction in the fight.

In other words, if you earn yourself two seconds of reprieve by leaping away with Sword 2, that’s 1000-1500 free HP. Every time you stun, that’s another however many seconds of free HP. Every time you snare them, that’s more free HP. And so on.

As a Guardian, you don’t have enough passive without Regeneration to really pull off that kind of gameplay. Healway comes close, but it’s still a sort of crippled version of what Warriors can do almost right out of the box. And without the DPS/utility hit.

Triple med build has dps and a bit more regen.

Is not as strong as hambow, but it’s MUCH more fun.

Warriors really don’t have that much regen. They have three main sources; Healing Signet, Dogged March, and Adrenal Health. Healing Signet requires them to give up any type of burst healing, unlike Guard that can have VoR and a healing skill. Also add in the fact that it’s being nerfed. They are also completely removing the regen from Dogged March in the feature patch, so that will be one less source they have. So two out of their three sources are taking serious nerfs next patch.

8% isn’t serious. And if they nerf more, they’ll just keep having a problem with the skill. It’s either an OP stupid skill or a weak stupid skill, without any particular feature. I feel it has to be redesigned.

Depends on the build: even guardian dps can achieve higher regeneration, but has to invest more.

The problem was that when that was written, warrior was bottom of the barrel, conditions stopped him extremely easy, and had the worst healing skill choice in the game. It was an “all in” kind of class, which was too easily stopped. ANet decided to buff them by taking away the “all in” flavour, making them shallow and making some particular specs overpowered (IMHO if a warriors uses GS is not OP, because he needs many traits to actually make that damage work, and they are in strength/arms, WELL away from bonus toughness and cleansing ire).

They should have buffed the “all in” aspect instead, so that people couldn’t just outsustain warriors, or kite them to death (I used to facetank them with my non bunker engi back in the days…). I don’t know, maybe some evade/invuln bypass mechanic instead of just increasing defensive mechanics.

I’d use sword as alt, for tournies should be enough to have a good array of damage/survi potential as a meditation dps, both in 1v1 and group fights. Scepter IMHO tends to overwrite hammer: instead of closing the gap, you switch to range, where you won’t be using hammer at all. And Greatsword IMHO is too easily avoided.

Sword on the other hand as the best single target dps, good for dropping people fast.

And I find I NEED 30 points in radiance to pump up crit chance, so I might be using a weapon that scales a lot with it aswell.

The problem is that reducing the skill cooldown and removing mana costs doesn’t actually increase the skill requirement. On the contrary, it reduces it, by reducing the room for smart plays, and the chance of overexposing yourself.

Look at what happens with URF in LoL, which is really similar: OP champions or not, it’s still the champion that makes the plays, more than the player. Chaining skills means nothing, you shoot until everyone is dead. And if you get caught outnumbered/with cooldowns, you have no chance of getting away.

What we learnt with esports is that more than apm and reflexes, tactics and awareness make the most interesting matches.

Problem is by this way you can only do number tweaking, you can’t redesign anything.

This is true. Redesign would still fall in the domain of the developers.

However, number tweaks could still go a long way. If a skill is overpowered, number tweaks could tone it down (increased cool down, initiative cost, etc) until it’s been properly redesigned.

Well, it is also true that you can “redesign” by promoting different skills.

Example: it is said that healing signet should be redesignet, because it is either too strong or useless, and the warrior class in general is either useless or easymode. You could try to change that by giving Healing Surge a really big amount of healing so that you reward adrenaline management.

I tried Hammer instead of GS and I love it. Complements sword really way, because it has AoE damage, protection, a good immobilize and kitten combos with JI.

AAs have roughly the same dps: Against heavy golem Hammer deals 3531/2,25 = 1569 dps, while Sword deals 1729 dps, without counting crits. I use Powerful Blades though.

Considering I use right-handed strength, sword shouls have a bit higher dps. With 49% base crit chance (64% from sword) and 50% crit damage, we get 2338 dps with hammer AA, 2836 dps with sword.

On one hand, hammer AA is less effective in small fights, where the enemy can just walk away from your damage, while Sword’s high dps is almost exclusively single target. This is where sword shines due to its brutal AA, while hammer gives great support thanks to openings like JI+RoW+Banish+Mighty Blow+Chains of Light, then swap and unload Zealot Defense.
It also works better than scepter, because with scepter you should use Immobilize, then wrath, then swap, and you won’t be able to land the whole sword burst, or the enemy will walk away from wrath. Mighty blow has less problems landing overall.

In teamfights, you have now the chance of being a bit more useful thanks to the fact you have now an AoE weapon with some cc, and can give high protection uptime to yourself and allies. Considering you are meditation, thus extremely squishy, you NEED that buff. It’s like increasing your armor by 50%, thus going from 2427 to 3640. Or even more if you use Valor IV trait (from 2567 to 3850).

Oh, you can also act as a decapper with hammer, using Banish+JI during animation, then Chains of Light and Ring of Warding, taking your opponent out of the point for some time. Or you can just chew through the point holder, if he isn’t a MM necro or a guardian.

But prepare to meet problems in pvp: the bigger your toon, the more problems you’ll have with the camera and you’ll see all enemies as much smaller (I need a magnifing glass for asuras).

I can’t necessarily see how being a warrior, guardian, elementalist, engineer, ranger or thief would help outside of having inside knowledge of their specific field

Well, he was talking about flavour. If we have to be fair, Mesmers in GW2 seem more to be around warping reality than illusions and mind reading.

You have no range with that. You can do some 5k hammer crits with it but mobility is exclusively toward-enemy ports.
Your best combo is a JI + Ring of Warding chain with Focus 5 precast and Mighty Blow. This keeps enemy CC’d and nearly guarantees big hits. However you’ll be pretty easy to kite once in hammer (probably use chain, then waste a dodge to catch up). And a blink/stab/blind would negate a lot of damage.
Just have a think about that and see if you still want to run it.

Yes, but it might help a bit if I have to go for a teamfight, with more AoE, some cc and AoE protection.

Power builds are more fun, tho. Except hambow.

I like conditions because unlike power builds, conditions bypass protection and armor and deal true damage that cannot be mitigated by blocks, blinds, or evades. High cooldown skills can be fizzled by well-timed blocks, blinds, and evades, but that’s the beauty of conditions: most high damage condition skills are on very low cooldowns; for example, the highest damage source from this build (combustive shot) is on an 8 second cooldown.

Of course there is a place in the meta for power builds to supplement conditions and vice versa. A mixture of different kinds of damage makes the best combination, and that’s why running 2 warriors on a team can be so effective.

Sorry, I have to break the harmony in this thread. While everyone seems to agree with the idea, I have to disagree.

Conquest itsself already lacks any kind of comeback mechanic, except for the guildlord on foefire. The linear point accumulation makes the gamemode already boring as the outcome of a match is predictable. The rally mechanic allows for comebacks and swings. One right decision can turn the tide of the battle. “Volatile” battles are great for both, players and spectators.

In League of Legends you can win a match by few smart decisions. Stealing Baron Buff or acing your opponents in the lategame may completely turn the match around. Sour losers will call denounce it as unfair and volatile, but the sudden shifts in the momentum make the game so great.

Well, when I am outnumbered it would be nice to make a comeback by killing one of the enemies, making the fight a bit more even.

And killing Baron/making an Ace requires a set up. From the whole team. Not ressing/stomping a few frames faster.

A game that is too much volatile is a random game.

You say I should be punished because I got myself into a 2v1. But I have already been, because I have to fight 2 enemies.

And comebacks in teamfight are a matter of fractions of seconds. Most of the time is about luck.
And pushes riskier gameplays out of the window, because if you can’t afford to stand still the time needed to stomp someone, you are useless.

Ad what about the abilities that just make you lose time (thief, mesmer)?

No diversity

its one thing for a game to have a simplistic build system and not so many options to chose from to make a build, but it is a different thing to have only a few “viable” builds that “work best”.

The reason for that is that gw2 has only a few aspects of the game, pve, spvp and wvw.

For pve roaming map completion anything works, doesnt matter.
For pve dungeons full zerk works best
For wvw ,something a bit more tanky and with more survivability is prefered if youre going in zerg runs.

As for spvp there are a few options here and there, but people lean toward one more than the other.

even if you have 30x more types of traits, and 100 more types of armor sets people will still use the same thing as they do now cause the mobs didnt change, the speed clear dungeon stacking hasnt changed, and the wvw zerking blob vs blob hasnt changed.

It is important for players to realise this, pick a aspect they think they will spend most their time in, pick a class they feel they will have most fun playing, and then get the gear that exceeds best in the aspect of the game you are about to play in.

With the new feature pack that allows us to switch between traits and gear on the fly anywhere any time, people will run around with 2-3 sets of weapons/armor/trinkets and be set for life in all aspects of the game.

Kinda true: no trait/skill system guarantees diversity by itself. MOBAs can have a lot of potential diversity even if there is no character building. This because the devs force diversity by making sure different playstyles in the same mode are viable.

Same should be done here.

Ridiculous male faces

Agreed, apart from the Clint Eastwood face they all look like feminine renaissance noble teens. I remember the day (guildwars 1) i could make a human with a fierce barbarian face (with the barbarian headband/crown on his head). The shift from mediëval to renaissance is showing. And what i also miss is chesthair (only one).
More manly faces (and chest with hair) would be appreciated in the future :-)
And Natural body types with chesthair. Its all gym bodies right now.

Well, take into account that still in the XVI century you could find brutal mercenaries, like the landsknechts.

So yeah, reinassance wouldn’t be an excuse, considering humans are having it MUCH worse now than in GW1.

In case you were confused, the damage from this build is mainly from burning and torment, while the bleeds from swords are bursty due to their short durations; I rarely auto attack with sword, as I’d rather just switch to bow and put on an instant 6 second burn on the target with fan of fire. Glass cannon berserker classes do burst attacks of 3k-5k crits, yes? That’s considered strong damage, yes? My build’s burning ticks do almost 700 damage per tick, and if you play well, you can keep your opponent permanently burning. Just from a theoretical viewpoint, you can already see the damage potential of this build.

10 seconds of burning from combustive shot, plus 6 seconds of burning from melee range fan of fire, and each autoattack from longbow = 2 seconds of burning through a fire field.

You can theorycraft all you want, but the results speak for themselves. Play some tournament PvP and you’ll most likely run into this build due to its consistent, no flashy no nonsense, straightforward kill machine + support potential.

Power builds are more fun, tho. Except hambow.

Huehue

I believe Pvp in this game called Structured Pvp, so yes those Cannons, Treb, Champions, Lord, Broken glasses and structure is definitely involve. its just people called pro’Pvp now adays don’t bother to understand and put some effort to know what to do and whats not in a structural competitive scene. its not all about class composition bear in mind that Strategy exist in structural way. Throw some 8-10 or more people on those structured map you’ll see what im talking about .

Please stop comparing this game to those filthy MOBA, those 5v5 things is ruining this potential MMORPG esport

Or those pros put enough time to know how easy it is to exploit them.

This esport is ruined by itself. We should instead learn something from the pacing of a moba.

That’s side stepping the issue. If both sides are running tanky builds, then other differences in stomp ability and downing ability show up. What you’re really saying is that builds that are better for stomping are too good at downing as well, at least against the builds that are supposed to be good at downing. That’s a balance issue, not an issue with the downed state.

Removing the downed state wouldn’t really stop people from playing tanky builds.

Well, I’m not so sure about that: builds specialized into downed managing would be boring and feel contrived. That’s why they’ll always go with good damage/support potential.

And downed state is too fast: most of the time it’s luck that decides between a stomp and a ress.

And the game would be a bit less forgiving: you have to watch your health, and number superiority won’t help you as much.

However, the problem with downed state is that it hinders the focus on active defenses thiis game was supposed to have.

Classes like DPS guardian (incredibly squishy, but with excellent active defenses) can down you, but then they have to stand still for some seconds to kill you.

In a group fight, that means that they can’t actually stomp. Or ress. Unless they want to die aswell. One reason more not to roll a high risk/high reward build, and instead use hambow warrior, one of the highlords of downed state (stability+crowd control).

Having no downed state would actually give more of a chance of defeating enemies while outnumbered, and some fights wouldn’t be decided by class comp (example: a 2v2 between 2 hambows and 1 med guard and 1 ele, the warriors might win just because they will be able to ress each other).

It’s also one of the reason why stability is so important.

Is it really a bad thing to have builds that are better for taking down players and builds that are better for stomping? That’s the very first step to having roles for team combat and not just 5 solo players.

Yes, it is, because stompers have also the chance to down the enemy. Thanks to passive defense.

And that means that number superiority most certainly leads to victory.

Nice build, even if I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

Too toxic.XD

You know our class has a problem when the easiest builds are overpowered while the hardest ones are useless.

Well, they might make up for that by buffing celestial amulet. It rewards with more stat points people who can make use of them.
