How important is Lore for you

in Lore

redslion.9675

The Lore is important, but can’t be the foundation of everything.

On one side, there is the “show, don’t tell” rule. If I have to learn about the world by another source, there is a problem.

For example, Dark Souls story writers did a great job by reducing lore to the bare minimum, leaving to the community the task to make sense out of it, while the small hints come naturally, without actually searching for clues.

Other than that, I feel like the Lore is too heavy.

I have never seen a character that acted differently than what was expected from his/her race. All Norns are obsessed with their legend, all charrs value duty above anything else and so on…
Well, maybe there is some NPC like that, but they are completely unimportant and we know nothing about them.
Worst of all, our characters are bound to follow the rules. They are exactly like the lore expects them to be. And this actually damages the storytelling.

For example, the story of a charr whose father belonged to the Flame Legion might be like this: he joined the Flame Legion to avoid becoming a gladium, and took you, his son, with him.
You were just a newborn at that time. Maybe your father takes you because they threatened to kill you if he joined the Flame Legion without you.
Differently from other charrs, you are grown entirely by your father (or your father protects you in a particular way).
One day, while you are still a child, the place you live in gets attacked by the other Legions. Your father manages to escape, while making sure the attackes get you and spares you because you are nothing more than a child.
You grow and get trained as other charrs, but you are always seen with suspicion by others because of your origin. You aswell can’t hate the Flame Legion as strongly as other Charrs, because of your father (who you think died the day you were caught). On the other hand, you are eager to prove your worth to the Legion of your choice. You might actually be better than the others at what you do because of what your father taught you.

Here, now you have some cool stuff when you are ordered to fight against the Flame Legion: you character is torn between the will to show you new people you can be trusted, on the other hand you have to fight enemies whom you come from, that you can’t really hate. You might capture people that you used to know, and be forced to decide what to do with them.

And when your father is captured… on one side you might feel betrayed, on the other you might respect him even more when you realize that he did all of this to save you. But then, he begs to forget him, because he doesn’t want you to become a traitor like him. You might actually be asked by Rytlock to torture or execute him.

There: you can do a lot of things by making a character a bit different than what the lore expects you to be.

sorry but we did a nice job as a community when the december patch preview was on the forums and the whole year before but you have to understand that after a long time of no changes to the current annoying meta people get mad…

It’s fine to be upset. Read my original post though. I am talking about people being rude. That is not acceptable . That is why I am saying that as a community we are failing. That doesn’t help grow the game from a community standpoint and that is the only thing we have control over.

If you look at my other posts in this thread I even say, “I am guilty of it as well”. We need to do better. How can we expect ArenaNet to do a better job and then we act like a bunch of entitled children?

Let’s fix the one thing we have control over: us .

This is what happens when the most honorable and dedicated people leave. The ones who remains start to think that to better ourselves is useless, because the ones who did it didn’t find a reason to keep playing. So they become more and more bitter.

GW2 pvp is not so bad. The only problem is that the bad elements right now far outweight and hinder the good ones.

Sure, I can enjoy the good game mechanics, but when only bad/stupid/braindead mechanics are the ones rewarded, either I hope to find teammates who don’t mind me playing at a disadvantage or the experience might become frustrating or just ignore interesting mechanics.

The combat system is pretty nice, if it wasn’t that AoE spam dominates the scene. Which is NOT nice.

TL;DR The one who did a great job as players by looking at the positive aspects are the ones who quitted.

I think Jihm you see this topic differently than what it is.

I agree the game still needs a lots of balance. But seeing my profession running 1 build makes my heart in pain.

Well, I tried to play glass war some time ago. You don’t last on the point, under AoE spam. Problem is most interesting builds are just wiped out by this brainless meta.

I shifted to meditation guardian because it’s a balanced build (never liked full glass or full bunker), without being brainless (defensive mechanics are much more active, and killing people with guard weapons feels much more rewarding). I don’t have cc or other stuff, but I think I got better by changing class.

what we don’t want in maps:

NPCs
(perhaps objectives like Lords and Svanir/Chieftain,
but not simply for combat like Crapricorn sharks)

Cheap Enviromental Weapons
(looking at you skyhammer and trebuchets.)

Troll Playgrounds
(ledges made purely for troll builds to stealth and knock enemies from.)
(Skyhammer in a nutshell)

Water Combat
(it just doesn’t work…though i have no doubt they’ll probably release an entire map of water combat…)

an idea for the next map would be to add a pit in the center,
and any kills made in that pit add 10-15 points for your team.
or just make that the entire map and don’t add any conquest points, TDM!

And be careful with the size of the battlefield: too big and the fight is a mess, too small and the fight is a mess.

-100% condi duration below 25% hp.
I thought ele diamond skin and warrior Berserker stance were ridiculous.
Im not sure why I am crying really cause ive gotten my face melted by condi necro/ele/engi/thief too so I can see such immunities almost necessary short of running -% cnd duration runes and food or spam condition removal in your build.

Guess this is more a headsup to any condi warrior out there that ran into this and thought “hacks im reporting” cause it is a legit trait and grandmaster lvl.

Naw brah naww. Even before they were broken warrior was easy to play. The only difference was before if you in general knew what you were doing in pvp you would be fine. Now of course you can just smash your keyboard and be effective.

lol nah brah, before warriors were complete trash which no one gives a lol and not viable at all in high level tournaments play.

Sure warrior was bad, but not complete trash.. just overshadowed by everything(like thief is completely overhsadowing ele and mesmer right now), all it needed was some slight tweaks to handle condis(especially chill and cripple) and a some slight tweaks to weapons. The patch before healing signet got buffed and zerker stance got buffed from 4 to 8sec felt pretty darn good for me as warrior, felt viable but not faceroll.
The 4sec condi immunity was way enough to let me handle necros and engis quite well if used at the right time, now it’s such a faceroll skill vs condition users……….

IMHO the 8 seconds buff alone was kinda welcome because without it warriors would have been pigeounholed into cc-heavy builds. But I agree, those dayse were great. Anet buffed Healing Signet too fast, without giving us the time to see what we could do with what we got.

Overall warrior is one of the simpler classes to play. It comes down to the build though. If you’re running the standard at least 20 in Defense, Healing Signet, and etc it becomes even easier. However if you’re running a more glassy or unorthodox build then it’s can be more challenging.

Problem is the easy builds are also the viable ones.

I tried to play without points in defense, without Cleansing ire, Lyssa or Berserker Stance. You can do stuff, but you get overwhelmed by other craziness. And you have to go super glassy, which shouldn’t be the only way to play skilled.

If you are more into roaming, warrior is easier because you move faster with GS.

And people might not be happy if the only guardian in their team is dps. Which is not fair (it’s not like you prevented another guardian from joining) but it might happen.

However, most people don’t expect to see a med guardian in a tourney match, while warriors are highly predictable. Said that, with a guardian you have to be more careful, because you have good sustain, but also have low hp, so always keep an eye on your healthbar.

They did it in DC Universe (which was already a MMORPG with a fighting game style) with Legends pvp. In this mode you had to choose one iconic character and fight with him.

So, here is one more suggestion: try to link those templates to known characters in the setting. One guardian setting might be based on Logan (who wouldn’t want to punch him in the face?), one engineer setting based on Tybalt, one warrior setting based on Forgal.

That’s a neat suggestion, thanks.
Since this is a player-driven thing, i guess we can’t have identical models to the npcs, but it would be cool to have some defining features (eg. Hair color, race, face type) but let people exercise their creativity within those limits. (ie. My Logan looks different to your Logan, but similar).

That is necessary: characters like Trahearne have unique models, and some have armor that are hard to find.

Healing Signet: Why it's the best

in PvP

Posted by: redslion.9675

redslion.9675

During the last Ready Up I heard a developer mention that if Healing Signet’s base heal was nerfed by too much it would be under Healing Surge’s HPS and implied that this would make Healing Signet worthless. This is untrue

If you look at many fights, both 1v1 and team, a target is most vulnerable after his first heal and directly before his heal recharges.

For example if I’m playing Necro and I use my Consume Conditions heal, 20 seconds later if I’m low I’m an extremely vulnerable target.

Healing Signet allows Warriors to completely negate this period of vulnerability because by the time another class would be trying to successfully set up their heal without being interrupted, a warrior has essentially already completed their healing for that period of time.

This is essentially the strength of healing signet. But it isn’t all.

Stances make healing signet even stronger because it essentially allows for free healing during the period which it’s up, unlike if warrior were to run a burst heal. The normal counter to a heal like signet would be burst, but since Warriors have extremely high HP + Armor, and stances, burst actually loses to warriors because they can out sustain.

I think that logic dictates that a passive heal like this should actually heal for less than a burst heal which requires activation + cast time.

I don’t run berserker stance, so can I have an exception? I often don’t run endure pain on demand either? Can this build have an double exception?

Healing signet+stances=child proof. A child will stand there toe to toe and keep fighting. An adult won’t. The same logic applies when you see a engineer drop big ol’ bomb and have a rifle equipped and you don’t have stability on demand. You can stand there and duke it out and talk about how unfair it is, or you can back off until the situation favors you more. Winning wars is about choosing your battles. An adult know this. A child will just try to punch you in the face over and over. Hold physical damage for 4 seconds when you have to, then release it. Hold back all your conditions and play defensively for 5 auto attacks and then release conditions. Cleansing ire can remove up to three, if you can only apply three conditions then your a weak condition stacker at best. There is no huge secret to know this. Roll a warrior 30-0-0-10-30 (The highest dps) Use healing signet with bulls rush, frenzy and signet of stamina as your cleanse. Get back to use all with how OP you felt. I play warrior, thief, mesmer, ranger and sometimes necro and after a few months of warior’s being every where, i now find them the most predictable of all professions to play against. Their biggest issue is people qq’ing because of frustration because they keep doing what they’ve always done to warrior’s and hoping this time the result will be different.

30/0/0/10/30 might not be the highest dps: you won’t have might stacks like in pve. IMHO 30/25/0/0/15 with 2x strength, 2x fire and 2x Hoelbrak might have higher dps.

However, I agree these warrior builds are actually pretty risky and fun to play.

How do I beat a hambow?

in PvP

Posted by: redslion.9675

redslion.9675

I know the secret, all warriors hate me!
to beat a warrior using hambow you simply KILL HIM. big red fire circle – it has a duration. If warrior goes power – his condi dmg is pathetic. You can dance in it. Warrior does big swing animation – dodge it. Traited warrior can do hammer combo every 24 seconds. shouts have 1min of cooldown. IF your are doing 0 dmg out of the blue – means its 4(5)s immune to it – save cooldowns and wait. Use advantages your class has and thats the big secret.

Combustive shot has 9 sec duration on a 8-10 sec CD. Earthshaker also has an 8-10 sec CD.

Hammer animations are good, it actually used to be fun fighting against warrior because the animations are generally really well implemented.

I think he meant that Earthshaker alone is not the real threat, which is kinda true, but it’s also true that the warrior might not use the others until he lands Earthshaker. However, I think he means that you have to dodge only once every 10 seconds, for without Earthshaker they won’t deal great damage. It’s also true that you can avoid some skills with impredictable movement, without the need to dodge.

However, when I fight hammer warrs as engi I have to rely on dodges, blinds and blocks in order to survive.

redslion.9675

Actually, it would be interesting to see another tournament with the reverse of this concept. Instead of banning builds, you just have fixed builds for people to choose from, like lol or a fighting game.

The tournament organizers decide on a moderate power level, and then carefully craft 3 builds per class that’s balanced and interesting and not stronger than that power level.

Over successive tournaments, unused builds can be adjusted or replaced, or additional builds can be designed.

Basically we’re taking away the rpg aspect from players. (but using it as a mechanism for community-driven balancing).

Well, a tournament with blacklisted builds promotes innovation in builds. Which is a good thing, actually one of the best aspects in GW2.

So that’s something i threw together in 5 minutes. That without wvw stacks or wvw buffs.

4k attack, 100 percent crit damage, 50 percent crit chance,20k health, 3k armour.

All Berzerk gear. Look, I haven’t spent a single point in the power line and only 10 in the prec line, yet look at the damage off of that. With the ability to throw out killshots every 7 seconds.

But look at what stats i get if I try to do the same with say…a thief….

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQJAoYlUmKOncy9E/5Ey2jK0nIKuCOl2DAAAaJA-jECBYfBkKAIzsIas1ToVWERj6aYKXER12cFRrWKALWGB-w

Why look!, Oh yes, nice crit damage, good crit chance, good attack,..but oooh! the armour, only 2284, and only 14k health. It’s almost as if I had to sacrifice something in order to gain something in that template.

And look!, I can only do that huge combo every 45 seconds!. from point blank range, now imagine if I could do that from 1500….like say..killshot!.

But yeah, keep your blinkers on and keep claiming that having a huge base stat disparity yet still have the ability to access ranged weapons isn’t somehow ridiculously overpowered in an mmo. Being able to have huge damage/defence without putting any points into power or precision is the problem, no sacrifice is needed to get your stats.

Which is why you see so many warriors in WvW, it’s an easy forgiving class to play and spec.

I don’t know about wvwvw, but in spvp you have to take out 270 armor from that:

First, You have a fake 100 armor from Thick Skin (100 armor while above 90% health, which won’t last much).

Second, you will end up using Dolyak Signet. This means you’ll lose that 170 pretty fast too.

Take those 2 away, and you have 2647 armor (you didn’t invest 30 points in the defense tree as a thief. I can agree that the fact that everything good is in the defense tree might be wrong, though).

It was the same when I played bunker engi… considering a good part of bunkers’ defense comes from powerful heals, all that poison doesn’t do well.XD

Why Warriors Need a Nerf

I Agree with Demandsynz the fundamental problem is warriors have things that a warrior should not have. They should not be great at range. They should not have heavy armor and be very mobile. (They should be the slowest to get into combat really but then hit hard and be able to take damage).

There is a reason in terms of game balance why other games split abilities that you find on a warrior. No other game would put so many toys on one toon. Why would GW2 be designed to be an exception?

IMHO warriors should be able to do both.

But not in the same build.

I’d love if we had a “Juggernaut” style, slow, highly resistant with big, telegraphed damage. A slow-paced style that revolves all around positioning, and that makes you unstoppable if you outsmart your enemy. Something like a heavy against a team of spies/snipers in TF2: if you don’t watch your steps, you’ll be useless. A style made for teamfights’frontline mostly.

Alongside that, there might be a “wrecking ball”, more berserker-like style: a mobility based, much squishier, maybe more burst/combo oriented. With such a build you’d need to move well, never overextend and know where you need to be. More like a classic roamer.

This extends to all classes in my opinion. Every class should have the ability to play either a tanky role (sacrificing damage/mobility), a burst role (sacrificing defense/health), etc etc. The issues that I have with warriors in their current state is they get the best of all worlds with none of the sacrifices. They are a ranged, melee, tanky dps, assasin, mage, tank, support, bunker, burst, mobile class.

What I meant was a bit different. IMHO there should be a role that is BOTH tanky and deals high damage, but is slow and its attacks are really hard to land. The risk should be in the fact that such a role should be easily counterable.

How do I beat a hambow?

I play warrior, and HATE those hammer licking miley cyrus wannabes!

I’ve found out GS builds who invest on damage can go well against them (I used to run 30/25/0/0/15 might stacking zerker because I am CRAAAAAZYYYYY). It basically is reduced to this: every time you come in contact, you’ll deal much more damage to them than what they do to you. By the time your stability runs out, you’ll have pressured them so hard they’ll be on the defensive

Med Guardian can work, too. They are brutal in melee, and warriors happen to be there. Just watch out for your health and block stuff.

have you noticed botting surge in sPvp?

i’ve seen just couple of bots in my first half year of playing.

i have seen five in past 2 days.

they would keep bumping in walls, staring at you, casting once in a while nonsensical spells.

this was to be expected with rewards in sPvp. i’ve been reporting them, wonder if anyone’s watching.

The crazy part is most of them are warriors and they have this hacking heal skill where they don’t do anything and still regenerate more health than most people can put out damage…I’ve reported several of them, I suggest you do also!

New game mode: Bot vs Bot.

E-SPORT TIME!

What if they are just normal players whose minds have been crushed by all-is-vainness?XD

It really all depends…are there Warriors or Elementalists in either team? Then you’re bound to see flame wars, either because the Warrior is facerolling or the Elementalist is being a free kill (more than they usually are I mean).

That’s why some eles trashtalked me no matter what I did. One suggested me to “hang myself” muttering something about a “ultimate that saved me” after we downed an engi at far (don’t know what he was talking about, my ulti is just a signet and he didn’t use his ulti).

Another one was mad at me because I didn’t try to ress him, when there were 2 necros and he was downed at 50% and tried to stomp one of the necros who was downed but was at 99% (didn’t see that). You know what would have happened nevertheless: condispam, he gets poisoned, I can’t ress him fast enough (ress). We both go down. gg. Or I have to blow my cds, with a glass ele at 50% health not capable of surviving a condi spike. Not a bright sight.

It’s like some eles think that I can do impossible things because I am a warrior. Come on! Or they expect you to use hambow (you are going ele, you are in no place to tell me what I should be running :P).

Warrior or Guardian???

In spvp, warrior is traditionally a roamer. Guardian can be something like a roamer too, with a meditation-based berserker setup.

It’s a bit trickier, but his damage and sustainability are similar to the warrior ones, you just have to be a bit more careful because you don’t have swiftness and have less hp as a guardian, but IMHO you aren’t weaker.

So, at least spvp wise, I’d suggest you to try both for a while, and see what feel you like best.

I’ve run around the corner firing net shot before and rooted myself on the glass panel from reflects; I sadly, but amusingly admit.

No shame, you can’t see or avoid crap on the cannon.

8% Healing Signet Nerf

in Warrior

Posted by: redslion.9675

redslion.9675

Honestly nerf healing signet into the ground if you have to. Id like a still decent passive with an active worth using, but if completely destroying it is what it takes to shut up all the whiners then be my guest. Then every warrior would just use Surge instead.

considering jonpeters himself said they would not nerf hs into the ground with out boosting it.

in his own words hs gives warriors the feeling of sturdiness we wanted them to have in the playstyles nerfing it causes a problem we will not nerf it with out removing that problem. he even said that when playing and he sees someone pop heal of sig he thinks. no no no don’t do that. in anets own statement regaurding the balance they said (reducing the passive by 8% but buffing the active we want it so that people want to use the active)

i think their simply moving from a sig which heal is mostly in the passive to a sig whose heal is more balanced between the two.

his statement is in

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/Merged-PvP-Warrior-Healing-Signet-is-Too-Powerful/page/10#post3558664

I’m not going to look for it too hard though.

Warriors might be sturdy, but they are not BRÜTAL anymore.

I was referring to the healing sig nerf as far as brutal goes last I heard the 10% (ik it’s more but it’s for zerker I’m using a simple number) was across the board due to the changes to critc damage

which if that’s true then warriors will likely be just as lethal as always.

THAT’S THE PROBLEM! It didn’t change much.

We are not BRÜTAL anymore because Anets forces us to play tanky doofus, who just have to headbutt people to death, no risk, no brutality, no craziness, no innovation. I’m starting to miss the days warriors were a challenge, no matter what you played.

With warrior I can barely build to win anymore without feeling like cheating. I tried to play some freaky glass cannon builds that stand up by miracle in order to feel “fair”.

8% Healing Signet Nerf

in Warrior

Posted by: redslion.9675

redslion.9675

All mesmers I met run Ether Feast. Yet it is not OP. One of the problems in GW2 is that one heal is CLEARLY better than the others, because HPS is THAT important in pvp.

Mesmers run with Ether Feast as it’s the only viable heal we have. Now, you can argue that the same applies to Healing Signet, which then implies that in order to kitten relative effectiveness you have to look at other functionality/prerequisites of the heals.

The main difference between EF and HS is then that HS is 100% effective, no matter what, whilst EF is only somewhat on-par with HS when we have three clones out, which cannot always be the case in a fight, especially when you’re under pressure or in WvW (try keeping three clones out in zerg fights, good luck!).

In short: Mesmers have to manage their clones to gain maximum effectiveness and ensure their heal doesn’t get interrupted. Warriors just get it all for free.

That’s why HS is OP and EF not.

I wasn’t saying HS = EF.

I just asked the guy that said “Everyone uses that heal → that heal is OP” to find another argument.
