It’s not a bug. Low level characters will not see map icons for vistas, jumping puzzles, et al to cut down on icon overload. They will display for L10+ characters, and once any character on an account is high enough to see the icons, all characters on the account should see them.

Oh one more thing… please tell me how just 5 icons can be “icon overload”? What’s the difficulty on identifying 5 different icons? Doesn’t any child at kindergarten learn way more forms? C’mon. Also, isn’t it more confusing finding it in world and wait 10 levels to figure out what was that about? Seriously, I’m having a really big hard time to understand the NPE purposes itself than understanding the game features instead.

Isn’t it rather presumptuous to think so low of players? That’s like saying we should hide some road signs from new drivers…

Why not add toggles for various map symbols? I’m a veteran of many decades, and I’d love to turn on and off various map symbols.

People who struggle with too many icons on a map as large as the starter zones need more than NPE. They need special education.

The entire NPE is ridiculous. All the players know it, and I am sure deep in your hearts, most if not all of the staff know it too.

Go ahead, take a survey in the offices. See how many tick yes to the “Are there too many icons” box.

Yay, dumb NPE strikes again… Yeah, it seems some devs or someone in staff can’t see these reasons… I still can’t understand how those icons were overwhelming… contrariwise, they can be an incentive to exploring. I NEVER got overwhelmed by those at my first char and I wasn’t a MMO veteran.

Anyway, for a proper discussion on this there is a huge thread already: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/NPE-Feedback-Merged-Please-read-1st-post/

why is player to player trading considered bad? I thought that was a part of MMos

Player trading isn’t that bad, but using the wrong tool for it that’s what is the problem.

- The first few levels have been set in such a way, that it can confuse players more, than it normally would. Additionally, backtracking all over maps just to get some vistas is probably a bother for most people.

The new trait system is awful, with some traits placed out of your level range or in buggy events with poor guidance on what you need to do to unlock them. It makes you backtrack for exploration elements and does lots of unnecessary level gating that didn’t need to be in the game.

(Highlight is mine)

Backtracking… I saw this word twice only in this page and it reminded me of one of the reasons that Angry Joe said that was positive about Guild Wars 2, back at its first months…

You shouldn’t be allowed to add/change things in a game if you don’t play it. Rolling a character and standing around in LA is not enough.

So… what do you mean with it? Even playing a game for a few minutes is already enough to give opinions/suggestions/etc, even though the less you know it, more chances you have to get a reprehension for saying things that you don’t know about, just that.

I think he’s referring to whoever has any weight on decisions that affect the game, such as this one. It took me a bit to come to this interpretation, as the post had no background context I could grasp.

Oh ok I see it now. Yes, I couldn’t get it at first as I couldn’t find what context it was in.

Well, LFG tool didn’t exist when that Agreement was created and when the most of us accepted it by creating accounts. I agree it should be updated and then announced about the changes when they occurs. Also yes, I can’t understand why selling dungeon spots is allowed, it doesn’t feel fair for me. Players don’t “own” dungeons then they can’t “sell” what isn’t theirs. LFG is meant to be used to gather groups TO DO content, NOT TO SELL content.

The problem is that the NPE is misnamed. Its the “New Character Experience.”

Extremely unforgiving to alts, and annoying for people who’ve been playing since Beta and know the ins and outs of every system and skill. Its only slightly less annoying to everybody else, since the game is not that complex, and once you know how boons, conditions, skill combos and such work on your first character, you know how they work in 99% of the game, barring any profession specific stuff.

My suggestion, if the NPE isn’t fully redacted is to make it a thing for new players only, and then only on the FIRST character they create. All subsequent characters would then be governed by the original system, with possibly keeping level up rewards.

Yes, that’s the point.

Ok guys, stop! Enough. I really would hate to see this thread trashed out due derailing and flaming posts... Read the title again: "NPE Feedback", focus on that...

Anyway...

The way to solve the problems that caused this change (iirc, that new players were overwhelmed) would be better tutorials or more helpful NPCs and early-character goals that lead to tutorials. While such things have been implemented, sort of (the dodgeroll trainers, the hint popups), the addition of locking things off to certain levels (often absurdly high) is ridiculous.

Instead of, say, only revealing vistas at a certain level, perhaps have a hint popup when a new player mouses over a vista on the map. Or include a new vista that’s very easy to get to in a new player area, and make a hint pop up once the player views it. Et cetera. Don’t lock it off, because new players will catch on that things are being restricted, and they will feel insulted.

This! Teach people by showing them things and how to learn more about them instead hiding or locking out stuff.

The change I hate the most is weapon skills. Really? You don’t think players can handle five skills they get through gradual use of a weapon? That counts as overwhelming, too?

I really, REALLY liked how weapon skills worked before. Having to unlock each progressive skill through use made me get used to the weapon and its skills’ effects as I unlocked each and every one. Then I would switch to a new weapon, unlock those skills, and in the end figure out which one I liked best, because I had adequate time to use every weapon.

With this new system, skills are unlocked instantly. There’s no telling if a new player actually bothered to get all their other weapons by the time a new skill unlocks (and they probably haven’t). Say a player only changes weapons out once they’ve unlocked all five skills. Suddenly--they have all five skills on this new weapon! And no time to get used to them gradually. Isn’t that the "overwhelming" you guys were trying to avoid in the first place...? It makes no sense to me.

Neither to me, although it seems some people liked it *shrugs*.

Anyway, here is a suggestion: why not merging both systems? What about having skills unlocked by use as before but whenever you unlock certain skill for certain weapon it would unlock it for that weapon for all characters? I’m not sure if the skills from the same weapon are the same for different professions (like greatsword #1 for a mesmer is the same for a ranger).

Let me give an example: Let’s say I play a mesmer and just got a new Scepter, I would go and fight to unlock its skills gradually as before. But then, when I unlock its skill #2 it would unlock such skill for all Scepters for all characters (and for that profession in case they are different). The thing is, the unlocking is based on the skill itself instead on levels. Tell me if something is fail with this idea, I don’t know all professions yet.

There are many times in school when the class had to review stuff I already knew. It happened in most classes in fact. And then we got on to new stuff. I’m not even sure what you’re trying to say here.

Oh I see. It’s a couple of days at the beginning of the term. Sorry not seeing the issue, sorry you are.

No, I don’t mean just having a review, neither being a couple of days at the beginning of the term. I mean being treated like new one every time, all time, being put on the beginning again, ignoring completely your background or where you are coming from. It’s more than a simple review to help everyone to catch up and be on the same stuff. And not the beginning of the term, but beginning of the whole learning lifetime. As other said, if you really read it all you would get it when I mentioned middle school and kindergarten, not a few days away from each other huh.

Anyway, let’s stop derailing and pointing fingers to each one’s opinion.

You talk about speed of leveling. The first 15 levels are, and have always been, meant to be a tutorial. After those levels you can level as slow as you want with barely any interference at all from the NPE.

It was? For me it never felt like that, at lvl 10 i could already handle the most of stuff on my own. Also, if it’s only the first 20 lvls is meant to be a tutorial why still teaching ppl about stuff at lvl 50, 70 or even 80? Doesn’t it sound like the whole leveling process is now a tutorial?

And why forcing a tutorial down everyone’s throat, even for those who can already understand it quickly or even for those who already learned it like when making a second char?

You can get to both WvW and PvP from level 2 if you want. On your second character after it a lot of stuff isn’t locked anyway.

And…. once again… New Players Experience should be about the first experience, first character.. why we have to deal with a tutorial again every time a new char is made? The unlocks when on a second char seems to be just a way to lessen the whole tutorial experience again, even though the tutorial is still there clearly visible, or just a workaround to give veteran players an option to do their stuff without being disturbed by the tutorial.

As for treating me like a 3 year old, I’m confident enough to know that I wasn’t the target audience for these changes and I’m happy they help other people that might need the help.

You weren’t the target but you were included in it. Imagine you are at the middle school and then they decide to put your class together with a kindergarten one just for management purposes, would you like to go through all those early learning stages again just for someone else’s learning sake? What about being put there again and again and again…

Anyway, enough of pointing fingers. Let’s not derail it and focus on the subject here: issues with NPE and what can be done to solve it. Let’s stop pointing fingers and discussing what opinion matter or doesn’t. Let’s bring up more constructive suggestions instead non-sense and vague arguments.

The hand holding and speed in which you reach level 20 goes against the company’s policy of “play how you want”. If the game was designed to be “end game” since level 1 (where the player can do almost anything, except some dungeons and some other minimal things), level gating everything is saying that they (the company) either don’t know what they’re doing or lying through their teeth. For a game based on exploring I am honestly not sure how rushing and throwing you to max level as fast as possible, any kind of incentive to exploration.

Limiting your option (by the grade of level gating implemented) and forcing you to use scrolls and (for example) mindless Mist trains to level, in my opinion, is not the action that enforces “free choice”. But alas, people like it and it can be dealt with. Given, of course, that you have more options.

we have just one tiny request. An option. A way out. A godkitten If and End If on the kitten game code.

The lack of this option is why I think that the management don’t know what they are doing. In giving an option, you would get new players and keep the old.

This, this, this and this!

Shadow,

You are mistaken on one point. It was taken into account how the NPE would affect veterans. Anet decided that the benefits for potential new players outweighed the negative impact on existing paying customers. Companies make this sort of decision all of the time.

Ah yes, I know that. What I mean was it felt like they weren’t taking into account.
Well, preferring to take the risk about how it would affect them feels like they didn’t think about them, more could have been done to lessen that feeling. Taking into account but doing nothing about it’s like not taking into account.

EDIT: Ah, I forgot a thing. When I meant veteran I didn’t mean only players veteran in GW2, but veteran players in MMOs in general. The system seems to not take in account their background, forcing them into learning stuff they might already known.

You’re going to play the first 20 levels of your character for a tiny tiny portion of a character’s life. I mean the longer you play the character, the smaller that percentage gets. If you spent 2 hours going to level 20, assuming you don’t use a scroll, and you then spend 200 hours on that character, it’s only 1% of the character’s life. That’s it.

Again, what’s the purpose of leveling soooo fast? Games aren’t made to be enjoyable? Leveling process should be a enjoyable experience and exploration time. For learning process that’s what tutorials and guides are for. I took 1 week to level up to 30 in my first char and I’m not ashamed of it neither regret it because I enjoyed it.

Now, I don’t know how much work it would take to create these options, but I do know that Anet is giving away leveling up tomes now, just for logging in. It may be the leveling up tomes are less work than what you’re asking for.

People are crying out for new content, people are complaining this change already took too long, but we want to complicate it.

The options I talk of are making these stuff optional, taking in account player’s background. Leave those locks and stuff for those who really have hard time learning and let the smarter or experienced skip it if they wish. The options I mean is not forcing learning stuff on those who already learned them. It’s like teaching a high-degree engineer guy how to make basic maths like 2+2.

Oh and those tomes are also just a workaround to lessen the frustration caused by this. “Oh, didn’t you like the new system? Ok, use this to skip it if you like as we don’t have time to do more proper fixes.” If not why the raising of receiving those tomes after all these complaints? Yes, there wouldn’t be reason to use tomes to skip it if it was an enjoyable experience. It falls in the same reason as my next point…

It’s already set up so your second passage through the new system is different from the first. So the worst of if it you only have to endure on a single character.

Again, the system is about New Players Experience, new people, first character only. Stop using second character as argument. The things done for seconds chars were just a workaround to give veteran players more movement and free choice due the consequences of the system.

I can see where it would be a little annoying but not the kind of hatred it’s received. It’s a massive over-reacting and the early part of it is a larger over-reaction. People bought into the disinformation. Some people never tried it.

And a lot of people who did try it realized it’s really not that bad…if it accomplishes that Anet was trying to do, which is the only caveat I can think of.

Well, some people doesn’t like being treated like a 3 years old child and forced to learn things they already know.

And yes, veteran players weren’t the main target of it but the system was designed without taking in account how it would affect them. Then yes, it’s like the system was meant to them too or they were ignored when designing the system.

If 1000 old people really don’t like it but 2000 new people stay and play longer, Anet did what they intended to do with it.

And those 2000 will one day become veteran players… and if they start seeing it as we see it now at that time… well, who knows…

I’m simply saying that to me it doesn’t much matter. It doesn’t change the game for me. [..]
I particularly don’t see it as a big deal because the first fifteen levels pretty much fly

So why do you insist to reply to every and all posts disagreeing with it if you don’t mind with it? Let it for those who care :P

They were specifically implemented in such a way as to affect all players with a new character, not just those who struggle with certain concpets due to inexperience or limited capacity. Everyone creating and playing a new character has the new experience rather than the old.

But there are people with low IQs. You’re probably a smart guy and smart people don’t realize that most people are average. There’s this thread right now on reddit.

You got my point, I won’t get in discussing it and yes, I’m also average. Also, I like to help people then yes, I help them when I see someone needing help.

These changes weren’t meant for you and an experienced player can travel through them very quickly.

That’s why I say that our feedback, saying that we shouldn’t be treated like we’re stupid..well sure, that’s what the most intelligent people would think.

How about we try to be a little more understanding to those that haven’t picked it up so easily.

So why forcing this stupidity down *everyone*’s throat? Helping people who needs help is indeed a great thing and the initiative was great. But why generalize and treat everyone as if everyone needs help? That’s the big issue with it.

It doesn’t take in account what level you are or how experienced you are. It treats everyone as starter in MMOs world. Remember, those who are new to GW2 can also be experienced and veteran in MMO games in general, then why treating them as if they never dealt with MMOs?

Options, free choice, options, free will, options and options… (did I say options?) this is what wrong with it. It feels like you are in high-school but you are forced to go back to kindergarten because they think you aren’t able enough to keep going. Stop defending it so much and analyze all facts too, also stop taking it on personal base when someone disagrees.

And excuse me but… what are you trying to say with “That’s why I say that our feedback, saying that we shouldn’t be treated like we’re stupid..well sure, that’s what the most intelligent people would think.”? Can you complete it as I didn’t get your point?

Yes, there was a patch that fixed several things. But a big part of it still feels wrong and needs some action. Even after that fixes the system still treats people as having low IQ, things are still dumb and non-sense, it still have too much hand-holding and too much restrictions where it was never needed.

The fix done feels something like when someone holds your hand to help you to cross the street, then you tell them that they are gripping your hand too much and all what they do is only lessen it a very little bit, but still holding it tight as if supposing you aren’t able enough to do it on your own.

Oh I think I forgot to mention.. I like the ideas you gave and actually GW2 already had some reference in-game, although not complete as an encyclopedia. Well, anyone can report anyone if they see any violation, they don’t need to be directly involved. That’s what Report tool is for and why it’s available through several places. And where would be the reporter’s anonymity if they need to involve in order to report an abuse?

So, someone looking for people to help them do Goemm’s Lab or The Long Run would be allowed since they’ll have to be together between checkpoints, but someone just sitting next to the chest on Skipping Stones and cashing in from portals would not be allowed.

Not intending to bring a discussion but I wish some clarification.. wouldn’t the last be similar to some who sell spots in dungeons too? I can’t get the idea of selling spots where you just kill the boss and grab chest as allowed. If it was to do the whole or part of the run I would understand, as it would be like doing some content.

About fixes to Personal Story let me bring up a request again: when “fixing” it, please DON’T make amendments or emendations in order to make it appear as if it makes some sense, revert it to the original storytelling. The original writer put then that way for some reason and it’s stupid to mess with its order. If there are boring parts people can just do stuff ignoring dialogs and such. Also, what may be boring to one may not be boring to others. Again, not everyone is equal.

RPG’s should be played at the speed the players want to. This goes all the way back to Dungeons and Dragons. If your party doesn’t like your DM’ing methods/progression speed, either they inform you and you fix it, or they choose to leave/the DM finds new players instead. We play these games for interaction and to experiment in a new world that lets us. It inspires curiosity at the pace of the learner. If all public schools held back everyone/moved at the pace of special ed students or those with serious learning disabilities, or simply, just slower students, we’d live in a society with virtually no progression since the top of the class would never have the opportunity to truly learn, or would simply quit school as soon as possible just for the sake of preserving their sanity.

You cannot get rid of it completely but you can “shrink” it. Just pick up any uncompleted achievement out of daily list and set it to watch it, make sure you have only that achievement in your watch list and voila, you will have only that achievement in the UI for a lifetime, as long you don’t un-watch it or it gets completed. :P My list even still have Daily Halloween Costume Brawl still there as I didn’t un-watch it :P

Meanwhile, over in Plains of Ashford, there’s a heart […] used to be, you fought animals in an arena, and could choose the animals and the level of difficulty. Now, the NPC gives you a gun and sets you off to capture drakes or minotaurs for the arena. This, of course, replaces your skills with the weapon’s… er, skills. Wasn’t that something they were trying to avoid, to avoid newbie confusion? As in, isn’t that the reason we are no longer able to feed the cows or water the corn in Queensdale? Or is there some other reason we now dance for the cows? Anyway, before, that heart was fun and not particularly tedious. Now, however, if there are several people hunting the drakes, well, are we not directly competing with each other for content/resources? Thought that was a design philosophy no-no. Hmm.

Over in Wayfarer Foothills, we can’t feed the bear cubs the tasty fish anymore, because hmm. We can still turn into snow leopards, which replaces our skills with one snow leopard attack. [..] Once again, inconsistency rears its ugly head. Unless there really is some other reason for the dancing with cows… hmm. No idea why the bunny thing was moved. The keg toss thing now has a circle telling you where to be to catch it. That gets an /e Fluttershy yay.

It’s just… logic has been denied. :P Good points by the way and nothing to add to them.

Are you a new player? That is, first account, first character? If not, then your leveling experience with the NPE isn’t really relevant to a new player’s leveling experience, as the early leveling experience, as atrocious as it currently is, was designed with brand new players in mind.

That’s exactly how I said before…

Stop using second character as argument. As I said before it’s a New Players Experience, first character, first moments in the game, first impression of the whole. When someone gets to the point of making a second char they aren’t a new player anymore. Let’s focus on how it looks for the New, how it looks at the very first time.

If you experience this your best bet is to hit him a bit and go defend turrets since there’s less people.

Yes, that was what I did. After recovering from crash and going back to the map I give it a few hits as I could and then I stepped back and sat down out of event range. Helping with turrets didn’t work too as I was rubberbanding exactly near them. I got credit but not so much as I expected.

Also yes, I’m aware it’s something at my end as I have had connection issues recently. But what puzzles me is why does it happens only in the crowded areas while it doesn’t happen at calm areas in the exact same map at the exact time the zerg/event is happening. Maybe I just don’t get how server mechanics works then. Maybe my connection just can handle too many update requests at once, even though I had set things to lowest then not may updates required… I dunno…

Yeah there was another post last week about this and an Anet staff responded with something clever. I am not going to dig for it but they know haha

Now I’m wondering what they have said about that… d**n broken search… :P

Inventory Window changing size alone

It’s not about remembering the size only. There are a few mechanisms which trigger the resize behavior in order to prevent a window to get lost out of the screen or something like (Check one of my posts of this thread with a few tests). The issue is that trigger needs some tweak as it keeps triggering at wrong moments and circumstances.

Also, I can not seem to commune with any of the skill challenges as well as not being able to see the Vista points. Now I am not super worried about the Vistas as I could just Google most of their locations again, but the rest is kind of a let down. I don’t know if I am doing something wrong, or if it is an in game malfunction

Yay, the shinny and user un friendly NPE strikes once again… :P

About the cutscenes, I don’t know what it can be. I have heard some cutscenes has been having issues like no sound and such, but it has happened usually with new LS related cutscenes though.

Now, with a single, designated zone for the 4-event, whenever the event is in a newbie zone, it’s a sad day for all newbies. They get to watch veteran players dominate the zone.

When the event is in a level too high for newbies, they are forced to do fractal, PvP, or WvW when some of them may not enjoy those activities at all. Is this the NPE we want?

Good point, mainly the last. Not everyone are up to do fractals, PvP, WvW and such and then their choices become limited. Even for experienced player with all maps opened it may become limited because occasionally the dailies would be just like one 4-events daily and one like gathering-type daily and all others would be fractal related plus PvP and WvW. Even being needed to do only 3, at times players who aren’t up to that game modes don’t get options enough to complete it.

Another point… if NPE was good and achieved its objective… why then does threads like these keep poping up frequently?

It seems like the tutorial isn’t teaching things as it should huh? Not to mention the most stupid thing ever that’s taking off the most basic mechanic of a class and putting it behind a level lock…

Yeah I also have had issues today at Teq, although I didn’t miss the reward as I could do part of it. However, just a few minutes after it started I began to get a hard lag spike. Skills got unresponsive, my char wouldn’t move and keep rubberbanding and I couldn’t interact with anything like reviving players or grabbing stuff. I could say it was something at my end (and I believe it had something to do yes) but what puzzles me is it got fine when I WPed out but to the same map. So soon I moved away the lag lessened. But then I crashed and when I came back I was put into another instance, that instance was also fine but so soon I joined back the same map and the event, lag hit me hard that I was forced to move away and sit down waiting the event to end :S It has happened twice this weekend. Too bad I forgot to get the server IP.
