Really? Do you already have it in your home instance? Have you already completed the new Living Story? From what I saw in patch notes, that’s one of the rewards for completing story.

Complete the Point of No Return episode to receive various rewards, including a bandit chest for your home instance!

Or even a non-reward like “You can now go play this dungeon!”
It disturbs my immersion, it’s not any more useful than the previous system, and it feels like someone’s handing stuff to me instead of me earning it, and expecting me to be excited.
[..] Give the player a set of options at the start, and trust them enough to start experimenting once they feel ready. Trust their intuition. [..] I did get the downed state on my own when I saw it, no explanation needed.

This is what I don’t get about it… how can giving info about basic mechanics be considered a reward? It’s like telling a very young child: “Congratulations! You have earned the right to learn how to stand up after stumbling!”, it’s just meeh. “Congratulations! You can now learn what Asura Gates are about.”.. “Duhh, I saw what they are for more than 10 levels ago.” -_- Giving info about basic stuff should never be considered a reward. It’s an obligation to provide them.

And why the game should suppose when players are ready to know about things? Let them learn things at their own pace. Why should I wait with junk gear in my inventory until lvl 12 or 17 that’s when the game thinks I’m ready to know about salvaging and TP respectively? I learned about salvaging when I was lvl 5 pre-NPE! Or waiting until level 15 to know about map completion after passing by several PoIs and stuff during my exploration just because the game thinks it’s not interesting for me to know about them yet? C’mon. Of course some people can take some time learning stuff, but others can learn faster. Don’t put everyone on the same plate.

Yes, some things like combo fields could have been explained better to me as a new player.
The dodge trainer is fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. That is the way to teach players how to do things.
Maybe give them a tooltip or something once they make their first combo, or just set up a “training grounds” area (or instance) in the city where you can try out combos, learn dodging, hit dummies to get a feel for your skills, etc. If you want to you can talk to a trainer there to instantly unlock (aka buy) weapon skills or traits. Doesn’t that make sense? Not this kitten popup dialogue

This is how a tutorial or something supposed to teach players should be done. Let players learn at their own pace and will instead waiting 80 lvls to learn all basic stuff.
Why locking out stuff because the game thinks it’s too overwhelming for me to know them yet? Why preventing me to learn basic things just because the game thinks I’m not ready for it yet? This way you are treating everyone like a baby, ignoring their background like coming from other MMOs or having easiness to learn things.

Again, yes it’s useful to teach players but putting everyone on the same plate it’s just annoying. Remember: those who are new now will become veterans later and even though they can’t think of it as stupid for now, it’s possible their mind can change later and think like others vets here are thinking now.

You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.
[sip]
if it helps some new people so be it.

Right, because everyone should focus on trying to level up to 15 as fast as possible, and not enjoy the game, discover things, and play the game at their own pace (which has been a major selling point of GW2 from the start).

Also, that’s assuming that everyone (including new players) levels their characters in exactly the same way you do.

+10 to this! Leveling up should be an enjoyable experience, not a boring chore you must do as fast you can.

What about making the mail showing up a different background, like devs names shows up here in forums? It doesn’t need to be a big thing, just a gradient or something like here would make it outstanding from any other mail and it would be easily noted. That warning on bottom and icons are a nice thing, but I can see how it can be easily missed too. A background can’t be avoided so easily.

2. Instead of level gating literally everything, why not just take a more reasonable route? Instead of the level gating you could simply learn things from ingame activities/tutorials. Specific ingame activities that are heavily incentivized would be a lot nicer than forcing everyone to spam the first few skills of a weapon over and over again.

+10 to this. The dodge tutorial is a nice example of the way to go.

shadow.6174

Well, the thing is.. the game should be an enjoyable experience since very beginning, I mean since the start of leveling process. With NPE the leveling process isn’t a free playing and exploring time, it became a chore that you must to do as fast you can. Why that?

I took 2 weeks to reach my first lvl 80 (casual here) and I didn’t regret or felt ashamed because I enjoyed exploring maps and doing stuffs during that time. Also, why rushing to lvl cap? What about upscaling? I admit I had a hard time playing a lvl 80 map with a lvl 60 char but I could DO it, upscaling helped me someway to explore high level contents and then it made me eager to keep on.

Also, why having a huge and boring “tutorial” through 80 levels? The very majority here aren’t 4 years old child, so hardly so slow on learning stuff. Why teaching basic stuff at lvl 80 when it could be taught at the very first minutes of play time? I’m all up for more info and teaching but the thing is, leave ppl learn on their own pace. Supposing they aren’t ready to learn certain thing doesn’t work at all.

These are the main aspects where NPE failed, all other details (locked items, hidden things, stats threshold, traits, whatever…) are just consequences or results of these two ideas or concepts.

It’s been theorized Anet is working on big projects behind the scenes. People are screaming out for content.

Should they drop every other project to get this fixed in four months?

And some of it was fixed right away. It was improved immediately. How come you don’t mention that?
[..]
Changes were made. Why do people ignore that? Why do people say it reflects badly on Anet when they did make changes fairly quickly.

I would very much prefer things to be fixed and working properly than very shinny new content. I’m more up for 5 very well working features than 50 brand new contents.

Also, yes the fixes has been noted but they are just a minor “mending” for a big faulty system. The changes promised are big ones but the ones delivered so far has just been minor ones that shouldn’t be there since beginning. The “fixes” done were these, just fix for things not supposed to happen. What ppl want is changes to the way it was designed, to what they intended to have but was a fail. Both “fixes”, the delivered so far and the expected ones, aren’t the same thing.

shadow.6174

The thing is, they used a proprietary system for this forum and the developer of the system isn’t there anymore to give any support.

If any of you are a programmer you may have some idea of what a pain is having to take a time to analyze countless lines of code of a unknown system to figure out how things work before being properly able to fix a simple thing, otherwise you will have the risk to break it even more.

The fact is it seems they don’t have the enough resource or personal to take the needed time to learn how the system work. Closed systems are hard to understand if the original creator/developer isn’t there to give some support. Just don’t judge things without properly knowing all aspects involved.

This is probably a bug that was caused by an update of some kind to the trading post but the old data still persists.

Yup, that’s exactly the case. Not a bug actually but leftovers from old systems. TP has gone under several changes since release but orders were never changed. At the very beginning you could place orders below vendor value (maybe a bug or not) and those orders still has been there so far (even before the latest TP overhaul).

I was a newbie too when the game was on beta i never felt overwhelmed by the game itself.
Compared to other MMO, Guild Wars 2 is pretty simple since you don’t have a massive quantity of skills or abilities .
I would suggest to roll back some changes of the NPE.

Not a beta player here, but I could say the same. At my first days I though GW2 a lot simpler than other MMOs (although I haven’t played many) and I never felt overwhelmed by the game itself too. In fact, I love figuring out things by myself and I hate being locked out just because someone else thinks that I’m not able enough to understand or deal with stuff.

Honestly, I thought the NPE is decent in trying to introduce new players to the mechanics, but I honestly think that you should give players some credit in letting them figure out the mechanics themselves. If you want to give them a tutorial, we got the very first story instance for them and you could always just make the necessary tweaks to those instances instead.

+1 to this.

Mini Skrittaclause

The skins actually need to be used on weapons to count for the collection. Simply having them isn’t enough. Basically the toy weapon skins need to be unlocked in the account wardrobe to count for the collection.

In fact, nop. I have never applied any of those skins to any weapon and I have the collection completed. They are unlocked on acquire if I’m not wrong, then you just have to have them. However…

To unlock the collection you need an ‘Heirloom Toy Chest’ which you can buy from a holiday vendor in Divinity’s Reach in exchange for ugly wool sweaters, ugly wool socks, or ugly wool hats. You can also buy this item from the trading post for about 3 copper.

Yes, this is the thing. If you don’t have the collection unlocked you won’t get the reward after getting all the skins. However, it will still take in account any unlocked skins on the moment you unlock the collection. In my case, I had most of the skins unlocked and got the collection done instantly so soon I opened that Heirloom Toy Chest.

Simply destroy the weapon skin this unlocks the skin which is needed for the achievement.

If you mean destroying it by tossing it out or right click > Destroy, no I think it won’t unlock the skin as I have seen other items not unlocking skins when tossed out. To unlock skins you must use it, or salvage it, or simply right click > Unlock Skin in some cases. However, salvaging doesn’t apply to items like this and using Unlock Skin will make it account bound though. Let me know if I’m doing some mistake here.

I don’t know what you mean with clickable but in order to get the rewards from that chest you must approach it and a “Open [F]” popup should appear. Was it what you tried to do? The entire leveling process feel broken and akward: like being told at late level 30s what rare gear is; seriously?

It doesn’t feel like a leveling process anymore but more like a huge and boring tutorial now (telling about rare gear at lvl 30? pfft I learned about them when I was still lvl 15).

And if the goal was to make things easier then it was a failure, because having to unlock everything, including traits for a class you’ve never played before testing them, is doing the exact opposite.

Once again, streamlining things doesn’t mean dumbing down, but it seems they haven’t got the message yet. Since the beginning I didn’t see locking out stuff as a good thing, it does anything but teach about stuff.

So… doesn’t it ring a bell? Doesn’t it give a clue about if the new system succeeded or not?

Unless these polls are a genuinely representative sample of the entire player base, no, not at all.

As I said in my post..

[Note: before someone can say anything, it cannot be said that this poll was biased because the link for it has been in my signature and showed up in posts not related to NPE and yes, I have seen the results changing after a few posts of mine in non-NPE related threads]

The links for such polls has been in my signature spread around several threads during last months, several of them not event related to NPE. Yes, I believe it is a genuinely representative sample, maybe not a big sample but a valid one. Also, it just summarizes some general feeling. Just look at the hundreds of posts even in this thread, a lot of them have dislikes about this system, partially or entirely. However, the same way as the poll showed there is some good thing in this system this thread also has some good points and improvements that this system has brought, but the bad thing though is there are a lot more bad than good aspects.

Let’s take a look at weapon skill unlocks, for example. It used to be that you could learn new weapon skills by using those you’d already learned. This would allow players to learn weapon skills one at a time, and use any weapons they’d like to try out.

What we have now is a system that “rewards” players with the ability to use weapon skills.

Yes, I had even mentioned it in a post months ago.

Let’s take the Golem Chess in Metrica Province, for example. That was a fun little mini-game you could play at any time, even after completing the task. Now, it’s been disabled because new players are afraid to see diversity in the game, and the reasons why we veterans were attracted to the game as new players in the first place are irrelevant. I get that. Then why leave the disabled Golem Chess boards there? Is to to confuse new players, or to mock veterans?

What about the nonsense leftover talk from merchants at Plains of Ashford? What about dumb trainer NPCs not being able to figure out that a lvl 80 player is skilled enough to get access to traits? Why are they at very starter area if new players aren’t supposed to use them so early? What about leaving vistas, PoI and other icons on map but taking of their completion progress? Even more, why leaving vistas and stuff at the very beginning areas then? Also the more laughable ever: who in earth would think about making a cow to get rid of their hungry by being entertained by a random wanderer (we players) dancing in front them? C’mon.

This is a new character. I do not need you to hold my hand. Do not have Alzheimer’s disease. I don’t forget how to play each time I make a new character. All you have to do is check my account for a high level character, and get this anti-self-learning system out of my face.

When I was a new player, I thought the game was so fun, and I had such a good time creating new characters to try out different classes, I don’t even want to think how awful my experience would have been with this NPE. Just making a new character feels like a chore now. Give players the choice. It matters.

Well said, I couldn’t agree more.

Yeah, and then 4 months (almost 5) has passed and no changes has been done (maybe some small and imperceptible ones only). And then, to know how the shinnny NPE has been received here is the results of a poll so far:

[Note: before someone can say anything, it cannot be said that this poll was biased because the link for it has been in my signature and showed up in posts not related to NPE and yes, I have seen the results changing after a few posts of mine in non-NPE related threads]

  • 117 people voted about changes to Personal Story (Results here). From these:
    • 72 (62%) thought it Terrible;
    • 25 (21%) thought it Poor or bad;
    • 9 (8%) were Indiferent;
    • 11 (9%) thought it Good or Excelent.
  • 105 people voted about locking out features based on level (Results here). From these:
    • 83 (79%) thought it Terrible;
    • 11 (10%) thought it Poor or bad;
    • 8 (8%) were Indiferent;
    • 3 (3%) thought it Good or Excelent.

Well, credits must be given when deserved. At least in a thing they seem to have done right…

  • 88 people voted about Content Direction system (Objective Compass) (Results here). From these:

Mostly what i’m hearing is your ISP speed or lag, which is your problem not Anet’s. My problem with the bell choir, is the way its worded. “Join in the Wintersday Bell Choir” “Take part in the Wintersday Bell Choir”…“That Wintersday Ring” achieve. THIS IS NOT TRUE. If i simply “join in” or “take part” and fail miserably because of bugs or lag i still do not get credit for the AP even though i should because of how it is worded. IT should state “Win a round of”… since that’s seems to be the only way to get points and you don’t have to complete the whole thing to 600+ just one of those rounds. IT IS MISLEADING TO SAY THE LEAST!!!!!

Yup I noted exactly the same thing in my first attempt to get that achievement. Either the objective should be changed or the achievement worded properly.

No, as I stated before, as far as I recall achievements marked as “Infinite” never counted toward meta.

Yes I’m also used to play GW2 through Steam and use that overlay a few times, I haven’t had any issues so far. How are you trying to turn the camera? Holding right button and dragging? Or holding left button? You said you can drag items as well right click them, so I assume you can move your mouse through the screen. Possibly it’s like said above, you may have some binding somewhere that’s conflicting with game or Steam. Does it happen with other games too? That’s all what I can think of.
