The thing I do have a problem is, is with people like Spoj that think everything you say is gospel and there can be no other answer.

Do you actually even read my posts? I said i only support nemesis because he has similar opinions to me. I dont take everything he says as gospel. Infact i disagree with alot of the viability and ways he traits some of his builds. I think my beserker build is better than his, but thats just my opinion. But the fact is someone who knows about the class (like nemesis) is going to have a more valid outlook on what the class is capable of. Which is why i often agree with him, not because its him but because i actually see it the same way…

Only way to get stability on necro is use lich form or plague form elites or trait 30 points into soul reaping for foot in the grave. We have a few stunbreaks but they are all high cooldown and weak compared to other classes. We have spectral grasp for a pull control effect and the flesh golem charge for a knockdown. Still not much choice in these departments. Its the main reason we are considered so weak in spvp.

I have no problem sharing my builds with people.

Sorry, you took the word “your” out of context in my post about “sharing your build”. I was referring to Nemesis with “your”.

As far as sharing builds and stuff…well, everyone is going to do things differently. I LOL at the people that play Tarzan from his fly because they cannot seem to reason things out for themselves.

Don’t get me wrong, Nemesis may be both a good person in RL and a good player…but the way people worship him because he spent some time making a video to enlighten the sheep masses is funny.

Figure out what works for you and go with it; don’t be afraid to go against the grain and be independent.

I thought you were referring to me because nemesis does share all his builds. He just doesnt put them on a simple webpage. This makes people watch the video so they actually understand his reasoning behind why he built that way. So they either agree with him or they take his build and alter it slightly. Stops people from blindly following other peoples builds.

I do build my own way. Its just nemesis does know what hes talking about and he has a very similar opinion and trail of thought to me when it comes to his builds. Which is why i support his videos. I imagine its the same for a few others. Obviously there will always be lots of people who “fanboy” these sort of things.

Ah yes i see. That’s my problem I wrangle with because lets say it’s Fotm 40+. There’s alot of trash mobs with silly HP bars and they are generally clumped together, eg. ascalon, dredge etc. In this case, would the lesser damage of staff/condi actually result in more damage because it’s aoe vs single target? Atm I’m trying to pin down the right build for my bf’s necro in there but I don’t actually play it myself and he’s one of those ‘i don’t really care’ kinda guys.

The answer probably lies in the level of dps of your group. My typical fotm group burns the trash so quickly that having only one (and not more) character that is mostly single target wouldn’t be a detriment you’d do more dps focusing on the veterans/stronger mobs of the pack with strong hitting daggers than trying to put conditions on mob that are dying in exactly 2 seconds (and you can still summon wells from time to time). Most dredge mob don’t live long enough for conditions to become comparable to direct damage.

If your group can’t burn down most of these mob quickly, you’d probably gain dps from having an AoE condi necro build versus a zerker necro.

Yeh it’s a tough call since we usually pug and it’s a mixed bag heh. I personally ( dont tell him T_T ) think his Dps is pretty kitten awful atm lol. He’s running condi wells from what I gather. When we go with my regular motley crew we burn stuff down fast so I think I will recommend he runs the zerker/single target as you have suggested, and he can go ahead and do condis in the pugs or something. For every other dungeon I have him take his zerk warrior, but for fotm he has to take the necro as it’s his only AR/ high fotm lvl character, so gotta make the most of it

If hes using wells then he should be going beserker anyway. Wells dont have any condition damage component. Necro has strong single target dps as Nikaido said. But they can also be good at aoe burst with the combo i described above. Ive used it on the golems before the lasers on coe and it generally results in us killing them faster. Because it hits most of them whereas the warriors are only cleaving 3 targets at once. Still for overall dps in a dungeon your better off taking a warrior.

You should talk about condition builds. And how they are arent as effective as direct damage. Having multiple people running condition builds is awful due to bleeding cap and so on.

Good point, I’m also a little iffy on this subject because when it comes to ranger ( yes it’s pretty awful vs other claseses in dungeons), but when it comes to using one in a dungeon, I run full zerker on it, but many a time I have been told that condi will yield better dps. Let’s just say, If the ranger is the sole provider of its condi’s in a dungeon, would it be doing better dps than it would straight up zerker? Atm I’ve sided with the outright DPS on this class. Not sure how this would work on a Necro, will he too, get better dps in zerker or condi spec, if he is the sole provider?

Lots of people claim the necro’s hybrid builds yields the best damage. I personally disagree. Ive always found beserker to do much more damage and there is no issue of my condition damage being overwritten by teammates.

Also with a beserker build you can do some very nice burst aoe. Well bombs + axe #3 + DS life transfer. Can also use staff marks on a power build for fairly decent direct damage. You can also boost well damage per tick by placing them and then immediately going into lich form, boosts your power and crit chance by a pretty massive amount. Which makes your well damage pretty much double.

@ Spoj
He never said it was a “stupid idea”. He was more worried that people would try to copy it…

Why not share your build with everyone? Especially if you are concerned with people not valuing a Necro in PvE…

I have no problem sharing my builds with people. I just dont see the point in posting them as i doubt many people respect me enough to look at them twice. I support most of nemesis’s builds as he has a very similar way of constructing builds to me. There are a few things i trait differently but overall he has good theory crafting when it comes to necro builds.

The fact that he doesnt want people to copy and use signet of spite is because he knows its a bad skill and a waste of a utility. Im just a bit more blunt about the topic. Even if my group grants me max stacks of might 90% of the time id still take BiP over signet just to boost my damage when i dont have the stacks. But usually ill just take spectral walk for a stunbreak or something more utility based.

You can skip mobs in other games aswell. Dont see why people are so hell bent on stopping us from skipping stuff that we dont need to kill.

That’s a pretty ignorant way to simplify this matter.

The enemies in this game are meant to be killed. The whole purpose of a dungeon, is that you fight your way to the end… and not skip your way to the end. And fighting enemies is supposed to be fun. That is what the game is about.

So this isn’t a matter of players wanting to stop you from skipping things. But it’s about changing the thing that encourages skipping in the first place: “Enemies are a waste of time”

Many of us want enemies to not be a waste of time. We want them to be fun, action packed encounters with proper rewards that validate wanting to kill them. In GW1 there was an elite area called the Fissure of Woe, and people would kill most of the enemies, simply because of the loot. And it was a lot of fun. GW2’s dungeons could also be this rewarding.

They are “meant to be killed” in other games aswell, doesnt stop people and im pretty sure much less people complain. People run dungeons for the tokens and the chests. People would kill everything if there wasnt guaranteed tokens and chests and it was just good loot on everything. Its too late to revamp that now. But tbh id rather have the option to speed run through things. I never had the time to run FoW or UW much back when i played gw1 which was pretty frustrating.

I didn’t put any points in Death Magic because of this minor trait. I mean it totally screws Lupicus fight. I used to hate it when those little buggers appear and then a grub spawns on them….

flips the table

You mean like it hasn’t done since December?

People around here are so horridly misinformed about the Reanimator trait that they keep quoting issues that don’t exist anymore to try and say the trait is bad, terrible, and the worst thing ever. Fact is, almost none of these things are true. Jagged Horrors can only be a detriment in a couple of locations:

1. Subject Alpha who targets every individual with an AoE. This is not minion restricted.

2. Cloak and Dagger spam thieves. Again, any pets or NPC’s can cause this issue.

3. Trying to get away from something that has almost killed you (that you were attacking), but the Horror (and all your other minions, if any) are still attacking it and keeping you in combat. Good news is that the thing chasing you is also in combat still as the Horror keeps it there.

Interestingly, if a minion (and not you) is attacked, you are not put into combat. If you are attacked, your minions go attack the enemy. However, if you run away, you drop out of combat even if your minions are still fighting. They will break off from the fight after a brief period. This only occurs if you yourself have not attacked the target.

I havent tested it with necro. But the grub targeting is fixed during phase 1, however when it switches to phase 2 the grub can still spawn on mesmer clones and possibly any pet or minion. So in theory it could happen to a jagged horror on phase switch aswell. Atleast with mesmers you can shatter the clones before phase switch.

Who the hell is talking about actual generally viable builds here? Nemesis is boasting having recorded the highest necro hit and all I’m doing is giving some suggestions about how to possibly make it higher. Then you starting kittening about how my suggestions aren’t generally viable? Really? Do you go in ‘look I soloed lupi’ threads as well to complain about how the builds aren’t very team oriented?

I think your missing the point. Nemesis wasnt trying to get the highest possible hit. He was trying to get the highest possible hit with a viable bursting build. Signet of spite isnt viable on that build. Theres plenty of things he could change to make ghastly claws hit harder. Axe mastery, make sure he has max stacks of vuln, might and fury along with banner of strength and banner of discipline. Full stacks of bloodlust and perception then swap weapon to one with sigil of force or night. See? I can make pointless suggestions aswell.

Spoj…I wonder if you think before you post some times… He has Spectral Grasp slotted!! I mean, vvtf does he need that for in a dungeon?! I agree with Arvid…shoulda had SoS in there…instead of a skill that is useless in a dungeon…

Read nemesis’s last post, he just explained why he didnt take it. Which was also why i said it was a stupid idea. Its an awful choice and giving people an excuse to copy an awful choice isnt a good idea. Spectral grasp does have a use, can position bosses before they get their defiant stacks, can pull single mobs through spectral wall. Its not as good as mesmer pulls or guardian pulls but its still a useful skill in some situation in pve. I generally swap it out though.

SupahSpankeh’s comment about melee classes getting wrecked when fighting high end pve bosses is short sighted. All classes do more damage in melee. And every single boss can be done very easily in melee with the right game knowledge and coordination. Dodge key attacks, use of utilities like reflects and so on. Not to mention ranging things in dungeons is incredibly slow, boring and no real challenge.

I hate seeing people mention 4 warriors and 1 mesmer is only good for cof speed running. Its not. That group setup is the best for speedrunning any dungeon in full melee(occasionally you need a guardian). Once you learn how to speedrun you realise just how much easier you can make the dungeons become even when pugging with players who dont know what they are doing.

I will say playstyle wise necro is probably my favourite class. Unfortunately ive played mine to death and grown a little tired of it and its weaknesses in high level pve. Enjoying playing my guardian and warrior alot more.

Solo pve in open world has been an absolute breeze even against things 3 or so levels above me using scepter/focus or dagger – staff. Groups just melt and I usually finish with 100 % life.

Yeah solo pve is kitten easy with a necro. I was referring more to dungeons. But the point still stands. Warrior is way stronger in both solo pve and dungeons. Same with guardian. If we are talking PvE, I have enjoyed Corrosive Poison Cloud. It is effective at what it does, stacking up weakness, probably one of the most useful conditions in PvE. It greatly reduces the incoming damage and since AI is stupid and won’t avoid circles you can dance in the middle of it all day. I rock a MH Dagger so that all my enemies have to come to the middle of my bubble.

I simply wish I had more options underwater for my syphon build. Everything underwater is geared toward minion or conditions.

Underwater weapons on necro are both incredibly powerful with power builds. And the vampiric swarm scales with healing power. Combine that with life siphon traits, you get really strong burst heal because of the double or triple heals on proc.

I realize with the spear, spear is fricken awesome. I rock my spear all day long with its pulls and death roll of fricken doom. Its the utilities that we are left with underwater, the grumble of the OP topic and header. They are completely counter intuitive to my playstyle and I only get half the sustaining power my build gets on land without all my access to weakness.

I love my necro weapons, except trident, I have yet to get any real enjoyment out of the trident.

The tridents damage on a beserker build is insane aswell. The auto attack isnt amazing but its still pretty strong and a small aoe. The #2 hits pretty hard. But the real damage dealer is the #5, it does huge aoe damage while applying vuln and chill to enemies around you. The damage is insane.

Target the weak doesnt make up for the crit damage. And signet of spite for power is pathetic. You get more power by using blood is power for the 10 stacks of might.

Wtf?

I obviously don’t know his precise stats, but he’s sitting at around 122% crit damage and 3526 power after food (+ 10% crit damage), blood lust stacks and might. Assuming all + damage% bonuses are additive (it favors my point even more if it’s multiplicative) you’re looking at:
(3526+100) * 2.72 * (1+0.10+0.20) = 12821.536
(power+strength of undeath) * (crit multiplier) * (1+powerful potion of undead slaying+close to death)
vs.
3526 * 2.57 * (1+0.10+0.20+0.02*x) with x the number of conditions
for x=6 this equals 12867.7844 which is more than the previous. Also there are 11 conditions in game, so the potential is clearly there.

As to your second point: he doesn’t even have a single utility on cooldown in that video, so clearly he has room for signet of spite. 180 power is also ‘only’ a 5.1% increase in power and thus in damage. That’s only the difference between a 29k and a 30k hit. And I can see how 10 power is going to do a lot more when he’s already at 25 stacks.

In other words, don’t be stupid here, if he’s claiming highest recorded hit then these things matter (either that or they are going to matter to the guy that beats him on it)…

10 stacks of might is over 300 power…. The signet of spite is only worth taking for power if your group gives you permanent 25 stacks of might. Ive said this before on another thread. Might is so much stronger. Wasting a slot for a signet when you can boost your damage in other ways is stupid. The slots he has are used, maybe not in that specific instance, but they contribute much more to overal dps than a signet. Anyway if were going to be running cof as necro’s we should definately all take BiP instead of spectral grasp for the might seeing as the group wont be able to share might.

I cant be arsed to check your maths as i dont see the point in wasting my time trying to prove what ive witnessed ingame with calculations.

As I said in the comments as well:

Imo, there’s a few ways you could add a tad bit more:
- Signet of Spite for a passive 180 power increase (this one is pretty big actually)
- (A bit more tricky) Drop 15 points in Soul Reaping (and 10 in Blood Magic?) for 25 in Curses: depending on what food you used, Target the Weak would overtake 15% crit damage and Close to Death (this isn’t actually 5% damage, it’s 20 power per 20% Life Force, so 100 power)? at about 6 conditions. So you’d need someone to spam a bunch of conditions first.

But yeah, even if it’s only an anecdotal thing, I think it’s nice and I liked the video. (Although, maybe after polishing your editing skills, you could consider tackling your summarizing skills? :P All in all, it’s 6 minutes for something that could have been captured completely in one screenshot.)

Target the weak doesnt make up for the crit damage. And signet of spite for power is pathetic. You get more power by using blood is power for the 10 stacks of might.

Simple answer is no. I run around with wells and signet of locust or spectral walk in pve. Blood is power good for might stacking, spectral walk is a good stunbreak and spectral wall is good for vuln stacking when LoSing groups in dungeons.

The only utility combo that i have found useful in dungeons is plague signet and taking consume condition and/or condition transfer. Keeps conditions off of your teammates while you deal with them yourself.

Also blood is power + well of power gives vigor. But thats not worth it, two utilities to get a few seconds of vigor is wasteful.

This is all true, unfortunately. At one point you could argue that necros were the best at boon stripping, but not any more. The undisputed kings of boon stripping are now thieves after they buffed the sword 3 skill.

Mesmers have superior boon stripping. Although not widely used in pvp. They can provide perma boon strip in dungeons where bosses pulse restack boons.

Tbf blaine. WvW is the only part of the game where necro’s are actually semi decent and popular (mass aoe in zergs and whatnot). I see a much larger amount of necro’s in wvw but still doesnt compare to the severe lack of them in spvp and pve compared to every other class except maybe engineer.

MM necros make open-world PvE dead-easy, though granted PvE isn’t exactly hard in the first place. However, I’ve been running a lot of dungeons lately and find that we have a Necro every run or so, sometimes two or even three.

What dungeons? Because I only ever see necro’s farming TA and occasionally arah. Anyway it could be that your server is very necro friendly. Most people from multiple servers (na and eu) seem to say necro’s are rare compared to other classes. Thats big enough proof for me. Especially seeing as its what i have witnessed.

Also looking on guild rosters, on my main guild there is one other necro i can see out of 100 members but hes been offline for months. The other guilds i have are very similar. Obviously it doesnt show all classes a player uses, but it shows the last they used. Which also indicates people dont use them as much as other classes even if they have a lvl 80 necro. I dont use my necro much anymore either, its just not good enough in dungeons.

This wouldn’t be such much of a problem if the logic behind switching wasn’t so inherently stupid. I.e. when I’m swapping between gs and staff or focus and pistol, it’s not that bad. But switching from focus to sword, GW2 always replaces the mainhand sword with the other sword instead of switching the offhand weapon so you actually have to open the hero panel and drag it. Unless I missed a better way of doing this…

No, that is the only way. However, if you have a few things in your inventory, and keep your weapons at the bottom of your inventory, then you won’t have to drag the weapon that long. But if you just need to quickly switch in the focus for casting Temporal Curtain, then switch it with your two-handed weapon instead.

You can right click and select equip in offhand. Still a bit annoying though.

The mesmer is the only class i rarely swap weapons out. Warrior, guard and necro im constantly changing for different situations (Necro not so much but more than the mesmer). You should be doing it with every class, its a sign of a more experienced player. The same goes for swapping utilities.

It’s not about the need to swap weapons, it’s the annoying process of doing it. You have to first lose agro, which sometimes takes too long for no reason and then you have to open the panel and look for weapons and uquip it… and that can get you killed or you are left behind if you’re not quick to do it.
We should simply have for example F5, F6, F7 and f8 available for weapon sets, so we can just press for example F7 in combat to switch to whatever weapon you have set in that slot.

Out of combat*.

If we could swap to any weapon set with keybindings in combat, then we are essentially getting infinite weaponsets (We already have 2 unless playing ele or engi, dont need more). Which is broken. It is a nuisance to swap things out at times. But there are bigger issues the devs should be focusing on. Swapping while out of combat I would be fine with. You could have other armour sets as saved loudouts aswell. This was discussed in the last SotG but the devs plan to only include it in pvp atm. Which is a shame as it would be much more useful in pve even if there are more problems with implementing it there.

So, what exactly would be wrong with “unlimited weapons sets”? Besides it wouldn’t be unlimited, but 4 different weapon sets (in my case i mention F5-F8).
What’s wrong with that. Everything would be the same as now, only we would have four instead of two different weapons sets ready for us to switch between in combat.
It’s not like it would give anyone any advantage (PvE), it would only removed frustration of bringing up your hero panel all the time to drag weapons here and there.

It would be totally unfair and ricidulous to balance in pvp and wvw. Not to mention it increase the utility classes superiority over every other class even further, such as mesmer and guardian. Can you imagine an ele with all their weapon combo’s being available? They’d be ridiculously op in pvp and pve. Besides I dont want to be given the option to use everything at all times, it would start to feel more like wow which would be kitten.

The clean look, looks like cm armour when wielding The Juggernaut (Gives all armour a chromatic effect).

Alternative to a clerics necro. Using condi damage to deal reasonable damage while supporting. Still a pretty awful stat combo.

I like the dirty battleworn look. Personal preference i guess.

Agreed.

Warhorn > OH dagger

So much more use in having a daze + lifeforce generation than having a crap aoe weakness and bleed and an unreliable condi transfer.

Tbf blaine. WvW is the only part of the game where necro’s are actually semi decent and popular (mass aoe in zergs and whatnot). I see a much larger amount of necro’s in wvw but still doesnt compare to the severe lack of them in spvp and pve compared to every other class except maybe engineer.

No use for mesmer? (With exceptions)

Yeah thats what i do now. I save my null field to use inside timewarp. But feedback doesnt work btw. See so many mesmers take feedback instead of null field for the fight and it has no effect.

3 war 1 guard 1 mes. p3 destroyer dies even before shield flickers

Do you even need the guardian for CoE? I feel like that could be speedrun just like CoF with 4W/1M..

It can be done, but the golem gets quite high protection uptime on that setup. Which slows it down a bit. Which is why my group still takes a guardian or we take a necro to compliment the mesmer boon stripping.

Have your mesmer run sword main hand. Two or three clones and maybe a phantasmal disenchanter, staggered to have different boon strip times, is plenty to keep the golem’s buffs off.

Yeah i have and its never full boon down time. The sword auto attack is unreliable, null field and phantasmal disenchanter work really well but they dont provide perma boon stripping due to cooldowns. But then i never changed my trait in domination to remove boons on shatter. So Im probably wrong, only thought about that trait recently when i was looking at a pvp shatter build.

Hmm. . . when I fight him his boons usually stay up a split second at most, except when illusions start dying. Not sure what we’re doing differently. . .

I always have a problem of illusions dieing so i tend to shatter quite regularly. When i try and use sword to remove boons it ends up removing the regen then the retal then the protection. Means i have to get through 3 auto attack chains unless i have a null field or disenchanter. But after reading what someone said about leaving disenchanters up, that might be my problem. I had no idea they keep removing boons because after they first do it the boons come back and it takes an age for them to do it again, so ive just been shattering. Ah well you learn something new everyday.

Yeah, shattering would be the cause of the difference. Pull up a disenchanter, a couple of sword clones, and auto attack your way to victory, replacing anything that dies. As long as your illusions stay behind the boss, they should almost never get hit. Even without null field, buffs on the boss tend to stay up split-seconds at a time.

Yep tried it today, worked a treat. Another reason why mesmers are op. I honestly think necro’s should be the best at boon removal. But no. Everything any class can do, mesmers can do better.
