I think there has been good discussion around the concepts of world pride and how the changes in EotM affect that. Let’s pivot to a different concept from EotM and how it could apply to WvW.

I’m curious what you all think about choke points as strategic ideas. I don’t think we’d ever want a map that was just a bunch of canyons, this isn’t Sparta or Thermopylae, but having areas that make it harder for large groups to get through if they are well-defended creates gameplay. Think of a tower that guards the only pass through a canyon, rather than bridges everywhere. Is that something that, in moderation, could provide for more varied and strategic gameplay?

For the purposes of the question, think in terms of building a new map from scratch, rather than retrofitting the current maps.

You want terrain that sometimes favours big groups and sometimes favours small groups. I mean, whoever can force their advantage should win.

I’m not at all for destructible bridges and the like though. Thing shouldn’t one shot players. That’s way too gimmicky. You don’t want push button and win.

Agreed, there should be a long cooldown between bringing out a pet after it gets killed. Realistically, after a pet dies the ranger should have to dig a hole and bury the pet in a cardboard box then morn it for 5-10 weeks before buying a new one from the pet store.

It’s not going to keep rangers from being overpowered but it’s a place to start.

49 phase retreat on the mesmer sometimes causes the mesmer to be completely immobilized and it’s impossible to get out of unless you use blink. (I’m not meaning the condition)

50 lag occuring at random times even though there’s very few people on from any server

51 my favourite one that I secretly don’t want fixed: elementalists occasionally getting a mesmer clone through one of their reflect skills, it happens so rarely that I’m not entirely certain what causes it.

The mesmer scepter auto attack creates a clone on the 3rd hit. If you reflect that, you will create a close. It’s not elementalist specific.

Guys one thing to remember: they did not announced WXP accound bound release date.
Just that its posponed.

All informations about releasing it at March 28th is just players speculation.

Of course. Doesn’t change the fact that the community has been asking for account-bound ranks since they released on March 27th, 2013. Nor does it change the fact that it took ~8mo or so for them to finally realize that it was only logical for ranks to be account-bound. Nor does it change the fact that account-bound ranks were announced what, 4-5 months ago now, and the only significant WvW update we’ve seen is the wholly underwhelming EotM. It boggles my mind that PvE can get updates on a bi-weekly basis, and yet the PvP community as a whole sees changes once every 4 or so months. I mean meaningful changes, not the addition of another mastery that no one but the T1 siegemongers actually want. Don’t even get me started on the ONLY sPvP map being introduced since release being Skyhammer, a siege paradise.

For the most competitive game mode in all of GW2 we sure do get ignored the vast majority of the time.

To be fair, I think temple came out for sPvP too after launch.

Point taken. Still, look at the SoR commanders post just above. Nothing but stress. “sustain the coverage to remain competitive” “split mainly between the hardcore players and the non-hardcore players. It has since been resolved mainly by the guilds leaving” “population’s recruiting pool has became very poor” “very large amount of numbers, time, and energy required to maintain hardcore competitiveness” “unsustainable” an on and on.

The WvW meta has one 15 minute break once a week. The rest of the time the game and scoring are on. I’ve never seen anything like it. Granted I do have only played a handful of games, but hardcore raiding was never like this. This simply burns people out. I’ve never seen so much rage quitting. Players quitting guilds. Guilds splitting or collapsing. Guilds quitting servers. Just for the sake of the score. We have to get the score. We have to be top scorer. Never mind that fights and the fun don’t change regardless of the score. It’s simply crazy how people buy into all this.

The problem is that the metric was asinine from the launch, but many fell for it because on the surface that is what it seems like WvW is “about”…It is compounded that the world is full of sheep (ever seen a tagged up karma train?), therefore people are/have/will run themselves ragged over chasing PPT which is (once again) still an asinine metric; without ever coming to the realization that PPT chasing only leads to heartbreak in the end.

I feel sad for the people that have played since launch and still think that PPT matters, or not that it matters, that it is relevant to anything remotely tied to their individual play or efforts.

Keep staying up til 4am to upgrade garri, keep calling into work, keep missing class, next week the cycle will start all over and you can do it all again. Then leagues will come and then it will “matter even more”….The sooner people come to the realization of the situation then we as players can hopefully start to change the landscape…Because God knows ANET seems to be helpless to do anything about it.

This attitude towards PPT is one of the main reasons why SOR imploded since it only accepts one type of play style in wvw. If it continues, the only people left on the server doing wvw are only the hardcore wvw players who plays for fights only.

I know people who likes to play wvw strategically like a chess match and playing for PPT allows this. They try to predict enemy movements and come up with counter moves. I also know some that plays wvw like sims/civilization where they try to “maintain” their homeland, and that involves upgrading structures, running yaks and making sure all structures get supplies. To these people, playing the way they think is fun indirectly affects ppt.

My comments are not directed at the handful of people that log in to this game and play PPT for the 2-3 hrs a day they play then log out and think nothing about it beyond that…My comments are aimed at the masses that obsess over it, and to some extent let it dictate how/when/why they play.

I am all for people playing for “fun”, the problem with that logic is when you talk to people that play for PPT they only have “fun” when they are “winning”.

The ones that don’t care typically have not been playing since launch. It may be worth it in T1, but short of there, everyone else will eventually realize that you only control (in terms of PPT) what your server-coverage allows.

I would say the ones who have been playing since launch are the ones who have found ways to lead with losing. If you lose your kitten while you’re losing then after a year and a half your kitten is totally gone. WvW involves hundreds of players. Much of it is beyond any one person’s control.

It’s like newer players who are like “Oh no! We’re losing by 20k points!” or “Oh no! We’re ticking at +20!” or “Oh no! We lost garrison while I was sleeping!”

Life goes on, guilds come and go, new people show up in WvW as old ones stop playing. WvW is such a long game, you can’t sweat the lil’ things. Don’t burn yourself out, don’t worry what tier you’re in. Your tier doesn’t say anything about you, your guild, or whatever. Tiers are nonsense. It’s not important. Do the best with what you got and only measure yourself against the person you were yesterday. I don’t care what servers are better than Gate of Madness, I only care whether I’m better than I was yesterday.

Whatever happens just remember the mantra: fight, kill, have fun.

Not natively. You have to go into Pure of Voice to get the condition convert. Also, the healing is 780 health, not 2k+

I just assume it’s best to compare skills with their trait support.

So many responses from Devon Carver, I can’t even count ’em anymore. Keep the good communication with your players, ANet!

It’s unrealistic to expect he would respond in turn to suggestions, and that was not the stated plan anyway. They’re “collecting” input now, and responses will come in a consolidated posting or Ready Up review once they have discussed and digested.

Other threads have responses though. They’ve always had more responses.

I guess Devon’s just not a talky type. If things get done and we’re listened to, it doesn’t matter.

To be fair, he’s been burned pretty bad for things he’s said but then some of that comes from a general lack of communication about WvW since launch and that hasn’t really built up good will on that front. I often feel like in other modes some devs are people who show up regularly and the players are like friends with them while here the devs show up sparingly and so we take every opportunity to dump all our venting on them.

shrug It is what it is. Not all devs are the same and posts aside I am sure that they’re working kitten improving WvW (even though I would say they started pretty late). Even if we don’t have the chattiest devs, we still have the most fun game mode =)

It would be nice to get some responses though. wistful sigh

Proposal Overview
Making defending more fun. Not just the homeland but also territory you win in other borderlands.

I would like to see less emphasis on making boss fights or whatever out of keep lords or giving people mechanics while they’re attacking. Let’s get mechanics on helping people hold things.

How this pertains to Edge of the Mists is that well, Edge of the Mists showed me what WvW doesn’t need. It doesn’t need new maps, it doesn’t need PvE type boss fights, and it doesn’t need more incentives for people to attack. WvW needs the opposite, it needs incentives for people to hold what they take. We can’t be karma farming.

Goal of Proposal
Defending is a sort of stale bit. A lot of servers (many low tier ones and from what I read this is the case on high tier servers) have just 1 big zerg that goes from map to map overwhelming defenders until there’s resistance or the map is flipped and then they leave to another map.

People aren’t staying to defend what they got or what they won. I propose some additional functionality in the borderlands to help defense be more attractive. I also propose a change to scoring to mix up the borderlands (so that it’s not everyone defending their own with EB split three ways.. I always dreamed that the borderlands would all be kinda mixed up).

Proposal Functionality
Things I would suggest to address this goal
-make upgrading more active, so that people don’t get bored just standin around for bars to fill for hours. Maybe let them build the upgrades along with the workers or carry in some supply (but not too much)
-how letting each person bring in 10 supply once and then rewarding after an upgrade finishes?
-get rid of the upgrade costs. They are not at all a factor in whether upgrades happen and they just punish a very specific tiny portion of WvW players (that is those who make upgrades)
-create some events to keep people on the borderland if no one is attacking like win over some quaggans to carry extra supply to the keeps or something

and on the score point…
-give more points for holding territory in a borderland other than your own

Associated Risks

-Will make upgrades finish faster – is that a bad thing?
-The upgrades giving reward I think would be difficult to implement since you want to keep track of everyone who put in supply (I’m basically trying to avoid having people AFK on the map gettin a reward every upgrade that finishes).
-Not paying for upgrades might mean huge inflation driven by incomprehensible rich WvW players who start controlling the Black Lion Trading Post driving John Smith to drink to the point of despair from which he will never recover. Ever. -People hate PvE in their WvW but hey it’s optional and WvW needs new people so let’s all get over ourselves

AC damage is fine. People on rams literally take the time to type “LOL at regular ACs” while being rained on.

No on rewards based on kill count – that’s the opposite of incentives for people to move down.

I’d like to see scaling of the transfer cost from top rank to lowest rank that goes from 1800 to 0.

The Warhammer Wiki says that “Zerg” came from Starcraft originally, but nice try anyway: http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/Zerg

Zerg is a playable race with exactly 1 tactic; you take the weakest, crappiest race in the game and attack each point using HUGE numbers of cheap, disposable units.

Most of the definitions given here were made up for GW2 as far as I can tell. In most other games, you’ll commonly hear the term “zerging” used to refer to groups of low-level or under-geared characters trying to take down a tough boss or dungeon by simply rushing in, attacking, dying, resurrecting somewhere (save point, etc), and rushing back in the attack and die again and again until the boss/dungeon/level or whatever is finished.

“Zerg” or “Zerging” is generally used to mean that you have a group of people who have resigned themselves to the fact that they will likely die several times in order to defeat something/someone, and their only tactic is to use large enough numbers that they can keep throwing bodies at the enemy until they finally wear it down.

The word “Blob” as far as I know, just means something that is essentially “shapeless”; so a group of pugs blindly following a Commander with little or no communication would fit here. I don’t know why we decided in GW2 that a “blob” had to be 80+ people in 1 place; during the first 3-4 months after GW2 was released, people used to freak out anytime a group of 30 or more would show up somewhere!

What does Warhammer Online have to do with anything?

The word zerg came from Starcraft. Like many things in Starcraft, the Zerg race was basically copied from Warhammer 40k (which wasn’t filled with super original ideas either but whatever).

We ain’t goin to decide the right/wrong way to use a word in the thread ‘cause there might not even be such a thing (not like there’s a dictionary for Guild Wars 2).

So I would say only thing that’s important is how people use the words and that’ll vary from person to person. I’ve had a 5 man guild group called a mini-zerg so I think there’s a great deal of leeway with how people use it. This poster here thinks his 25+ person group shouldn’t be called zerg or blobs but be recognized for the magnificent warriors with hearts of courage fighting against the untold billions who surround them that they think they are.

He’s clearly not getting that from me but good luck in other quarters!

I know bro, really it was just getting too dead in the T6-T8’s….They will always inflate during leagues, but 7-14 weeks out of the year is not enough to keep me there.

Transferring up probably gave me about another year’s worth of playtime in a game that I was more than ready to quit…The thing I have liked the most is the queues…They are few and far between, and when there are queues there is plenty going on in other maps.

On lower tiers the queues seemed more often, and from what I believe it was/is because everyone piles into 1 map, because there is not enough people to go around for another map. Then that in turn leaves the other 3 maps absolute ghosttowns.

I dunno how it seemed from Sorrow’s Furnace’s vantage point but I’d say their ability to travel as one giant group is pretty unique in the bronze tier.

I don’t mean that as a slight, everyone makes their own strategies but I’m startin to appreciate the differences in character between the servers.

Here, I’ll say it. I don’t mind population imbalance. People should show up, do their best with what they got. Ultimately playing against yourself is how things are measured. I’ve gotten to think it’s good there is a league for people who like to have big blobs and a league for people who don’t. I like being in a place where guild groups aren’t regularly 20+. Where 5 man guilds are big deal. Not everyone wants that and I like that there is a league for that. I just don’t think they’re better than we are and I don’t expect to be matched against them.

I do mind that game is actively rewarding people for transferring up tiers though. It’s always been thus and every update reinforces it.

This design model heavily promotes server stacking and makes those of us who stick to our servers look like fools for passing up the better loot chances.

Not happy with this at all.

I get the feeling that ArenaNet thinks the problem in the low tiers is that we’re lazy and unmotivated. Maybe if they keep rewarding tier 1 more, we’ll all see the light and find the strength inside to be like tier 1!

I question how much WvW the people who answered “yes” actually play. If they play a lot, I question which server they’re on — probably servers towards the top of their leagues. I guarantee you the servers towards the end of their leagues will unanimously agree that Season 1 was a terrible idea.

Yes, the first league did a lot to bring people out and drum up activity. On real low population servers, it was a big boost to the community.

WvW shouldn’t be about being on the winning team (‘cause if that’s too important everyone thinks very hard about that being on the winning team is one button click away) as much as getting people to play together, competing, pursuit of excellence, that sorta thing.

Maybe your server was lucky, but Season 1 had the opposite effect on many, many servers. Like, sure, PvE achievement hunters entered WvW for a week or two, but most never returned.

What did happen, however, is that servers towards the end of their league got farmed for seven weeks straight, with no hope of seeing better match-ups. Many WvW veterans quit from burnout, and countless people/guilds transferred off, either during Season 1 or soon afterwards. See CD, NSP, IoJ, Kaineng, DR, etc.

My answer is a resounding NO to Season 2. All it does is promote server stacking, kills weaker servers, and leaves the hardcore WvW members out to dry, many having to deal with both achievement hunters and put in overtime due to coverage gaps from people leaving.

Maybe my server was lucky then. We had PvE guilds come out and meet us, they joined us on TS. Even after they got their achievements, they’re still on TS in channels and set aside WvW events days every week.

We were a rare server not to lose anyone before the season though, mostly ‘cause there wasn’t much left to lose after we had a bunch of guilds leave a few months beforehand.

But even if it isn’t every server’s story I do want my server’s story told. Leagues were awful ’cause, like every update, they ended up with people transferring up tiers (I remember FA had a thread showin like 6 guilds that left them to go T1 but also had 6 guilds come from below to T2) but on the other hand the season did bring in a lot of PvE players. Not all of them stay though but some of them do.

In that bizarre way, league is sadly the only update that ever increased WvW population on my server.

Hmm, looks like we’re going to see some wildly blown-out matchups unless there’s some provisions in place to modify the Swiss structure.

Just for fun, using this week’s scoring as an example, you could potentially see a Week 2 matchup between Jade Quarry, Eredon Terrace, and Sorrow’s Furnace since all three servers would have a 1-0 record. HOW FUN WOULD THAT BE?

I’m assuming it would be weighted by current tiers so the 2nd week would be JQ vs TC vs Mag, however week 3 would be JQ vs DB vs ET unless tiers are so weighted they overcome actual points.

This whole thing is an absolute farce. No one wants to play in a tournament where they know the winners. This is like a hockey tournament where there are 2 NHL teams, 4 junior teams, and then mostly pee wee teams. Tournaments only work when the difference between players isn’t a massive chasm. ArenaNet needed to work on population and scoring mechanics, not picking a new tournament ruleset.

Match ups won’t take you out of the league, so ET versus JQ won’t happen.

“All players who complete the meta achievement will receive a set number of tournament tickets based on world placement which can be exchanged at a vendor once the tournament has completed for a variety of items.”

Wouldn’t be a WvW update if it didn’t involve paying people to transfer to stronger servers.

There should be more wxp for player kills in wvw in general not just EotM. The primary action that should take place in wvw is players fighting players. How much gold you’ll make depends which tier you’re in. Even in the lowest tiers though we make gold. At the end of the day you do earn karma, badges, gold, laurels so that’s 4 different ways you can pay for exotics/ascended. The dragonite buff is pretty huge too and am loving that.

What kind of food you buy, whether you upgrade, and how much siege you place will cut into that, of course.

One of my few remaining complaints is some runes are available only in dungeons (monk runes, I’m looking at you!).

In WvW, after your shelter and renewed focus are used up, you’re probably going to die very, very fast.

You’re going to have to find a way to keep yourself up (maybe more defensive skills you can cycle through, like focus or more regeneration, protection) and deal with conditions (even if it’s just melandru runes and -condition duration food). I think you should plan that people are not going to be in your symbols most of the time.

I wouldn’t bother with Bane Signet and Retreat. There’s tons of amazing guardian utilities that can impact a fight. Those two aren’t really it. Same thing with your rune sets.

Staff’s basically a support guardian weapon rather than someone doing DPS, like you’re trying to do. I’d change that to a different weapon set.

it’s my understanding that, for the first 3-5 minutes after capture (I don’t remember which, but I think it’s either 3 minutes or 5 minutes), an objective can only be claimed by the guild that had most of the players present for the capture. after that period, if the objective remains unclaimed anybody can claim it.

I don’t know the precise rules of how this works. if a zerg rolls through where 30 are from one guild, and 10 are from a mix of other guilds, the guild with 30 should be able to claim it right away (a clear majority). but if there are 20 from one guild, and 10 each from 3 other guilds (i.e. a plurality but not a majority) I have no idea what happens.

People simply keep underestimating what rangers has. They think any profession can do whatever the ranger can better, yet much of that is biased hearsay and ignorance. They say warriors have better HPS, even though rangers can get nearly twice as much even if BOTH specialize for passive HPS.
They say warriors can apply better immob, yet all but three warrior attacks apply immobilize, two of them is dependent on a trait that grants merely 1 second.
They say necromancers is better, yet the necromancer melts faster even with full DS.
They say mesmers can do more DPS, yet in a zergball, mesmers only seem to be wanted aslong as they have portal and veil/nullfield. And if they don’t. Their often told to take those utilities or GTFO. How nice.
They say Eles do more DPS, yet the first professions to die is the ele. Funny how the “best DPS” profession is also the “best rallybot profession”.

This is ofc, speaking from a zerg standpoint. In roaming, a ranger, thief, mesmer or ele usually do not die unless they screw up. And yes, there is Roaming Rangers that don’t run bearbow. Don’t believe it? Believe it!

More damage than necro, elementalist and more spike than mesmer while tankier than warriors? Roams as good as thief and can’t die unless the ranger screws up?

PvE people are the meanest people.

First solo queue match in a few months…

WvW is probably the only game mode where much of it meets at the end of the week and reminds everyone to be nice out there.

It was the choice of the phrase ‘manly hugs’ which, for many males, would make their skin crawl. Honestly, I don’t understand why so many guys are uncomfortable with a simple hug (unless the person is groping their kitten , which ok that would be weird), but you’re ok with slapping each other on the kitten while playing sports.

Thank God for this. There is no question that WvW should not be required for a legendary and kitten all you kittens that say otherwise.

True, you’re not all that bad. But just because you find one or two good apples in the barrel doesn’t mean the rest aren’t rotten and worm infested.

I can tell that someone needs a thicker skin, better patience and an introspection.

I actually have very thick skin, and generally quite a lot of patience. However, that does not mean that I should settle for or allow people to be rude obnoxious brutes either. Just because this is the internet does not mean people should be allowed to act in some of the deplorable ways that they do. If no one stands up and says anything about it, nothing will be done. If people continue to take the ‘just toughen up’ attitude, nothing will be done about it. It will simply get worse.

We are human beings. We are supposed to have some semblance of civility. Most of which too many willing just toss right out the window in the pvp setting.

Zale and Lan just need a hug. WvW people are friendly people! Come here, guys manly WvW hugs all around

I don’t understand. Gift of Battle is like 1% of what it takes to get a legendary.

Thinking about the other 99% I’d have to do just like makes me wanna vomit with how grindy it is but you guys are completely paralyzed by the easiest step? Even if they add 30 WvW ranks to it, it’s still the easiest gift in the game.
