'Kiel every day' achievement not working

They need to borrow from the monthlies that have done this and word it similar to "complete your daily category while representing ___". This should eliminate the initial reaction to assume it’s merely the completion of one of the various achievements that will count towards the daily’s required five (PvE) or 4 (PvP).

Candidate Trials Challenge bugged

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

You don’t need to be supporting a candidate to get the achievements -- just make sure you do the different versions of the trial in order from 1-4.

So go into Kiel’s, start at tier 1, and elevate up to tier 4. You get both of her trial achievements.

Go over to Evon, repeat.

Do note that if you do, say, up to t3 in one and move over to the other it will still default to t3. You will need to tell the first mate to scale it down if you need to do 1 and then 2.

The ones that require the button to be active at completion will state it in their descriptions.

Does anyone who played WoW remember when DoTs were shared across the whole raid? Maybe we’ll see an update to [some] DoTs being per-character in GW2 at some point. Even with a cap of 25, splitting bleeds among characters will be a buff to damage.

edit: Of course, this assumes their code is amenable to doing so and being updated, since I think they’ve said the cap is in place currently for technical reasons.

[Thief PvE] Am I doing it right?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

I leveled to 80 with d/d and the shortbow.

For a while, I had a second thief that I was leveling with p/p, but I scrapped that to make room for trying out engineer.

In any case, while I had to learn that I couldn’t just wade into battle like my warrior or guardian, once you play to the strengths of d/d it’s fine, if you choose to continue to pursue it in PvE.

Your thoughts about what skills to use should work for most mobs. As I recall, I usually did something like the following:
- heartseeker’d (2) into a group, ’cause I cannot stop myself from using leap skills to initiate
- popped caltrops (utility version, not on-dodge version)
- used death blossom (3) as an evade and aoe on the now-crippled enemies a couple of times
- hit steal (default: F1) on one of them, followed by using whatever stolen skill (doing both recovers initiative)
- more death blossom if needed or heartseekers to finish up

If things went badly, I could always cloak’n’dagger or otherwise stealth (utilities, heal) to give myself a reprieve. Offhand dagger also gives you Dancing Dagger to bounce among the baddies and give you some easy kiting.

Roll for Initiative will make it even easier to spam death blossom on groups until they are dead.

On top of all of this, if the group is large enough or not dying fast enough to your liking, the shortbow is an amazing weapon probably every thief should be familiar with or running with, at least in many situations. It gives you additional AoE damage and a poison field as well as the means to kite PvE mobs quite well.

You could even adapt the skill sequence you describe in your own post to include, say, a shortbow opening to hit the enemies before swapping into daggers at melee range or swap to the bow during the fight to hit the now-clustered pulls as well as provide you with an easy escape (shortbow 3).

All of that said, you might still enjoy s/p or d/p more for leveling. I just really like D/D and think it’s loads of fun to dance among mobs while leveling. You may instead prefer the easy stunning with Pistol Whip, the natural cleave of the sword, or the ability to keep melee mobs blinded.

The intent was to lead up to the question at the end of my post -- about any prospects of the losing choice still making an appearance in the game ever. I’m quite sure real-life constraints are playing a role in all of this, and yes I would agree that letting the players as a collective whole take part in directing development is kind of neat. I didn’t think I argued against any of that.

But, ultimately, what’s at stake is that we’ve more or less been told that one means of developing the lore further for the Guild Wars world/universe/canon will never get visited as a result. The winner will get developed, further Living Story content in the pipeline will be revealed to us, and Tyria will move on.

The split interests of the players -- and seemingly the development team -- shows, at least to me, that both ideas would get played and be welcome additions to the game. I worry that choices like this will continue to leave Tyrian lore un-expanded upon, and the cynic in me further worries that we’ll end up with more loose ends from new content as well.

edit: Parisalchuk makes a good point, as well -- knowing a choice exists brings along some (unintended?) negative consequences for players, or at least for those whose choice loses. That, however, seems to me to be an unavoidable trade-off for even having the choice at all, though, unless the losing content has a chance to eventually see development.

I quite like how folks are getting behind one or the other here — whether everyone’s just playing along with the political campaign setting or truly interested in one over the other, it’s actually pretty fun to read this section in a way.

However, I feel like we, the players, are losing overall.

It seems that whichever of the two fractals is created will be completed at the exclusion of the other as a consequence of the in-game vote.

To me, dangling cool content in front of players and then locking some of it away to never be seen is very unfortunate. Worse, even, than giving us the chance to see it and have fun with it even in a limited time window (i.e. the previous LS dungeons).

Is there any hope that down the line the one that loses the vote will still get implemented? There’s got to be a way that it can be done without pulling the teeth from the choice inherent in this campaign story arc.

There are a few male-male sylvari couples, too, I believe, though at present I don’t recall their names in particular. There are also straight couples, of course! Lore-wise, they are probably the race where it might seem to be most prominent ’cause they’re not biased by a long-standing culture that tries to paint homosexuality as morally corrupt or against nature. Instead, they embrace what they feel openly and directly and have no hangups about for whom or why they have those feelings.

In some ways, they’re far more enlightened as a result.

[Build and Video] WvW Support Staff Ele

in Elementalist

Posted by: synk.6907

synk.6907

First, let me congratulate you on a well-done video. While I think (I don’t read these sections much) this kind of build has been used for quite some time by staff elementalists, the video you have put together clearly explains the reasoning behind the trait choices and how the spells can be used to grant boons, apply conditions, etc. I really liked that, even if I didn’t see anything new for myself in it.

I also liked the WvW portion of the video wherein you show what you are doing and how your spells are benefiting the fight / working with others (e.g. might stacking for the zerg with lava font, water fields for the hammer-wielding commander). I think anyone new to ele can benefit from knowing how not only they can generate their own combos but how others might as well. I am sure I use mine inefficiently more than I’d like to admit.

It is my opinion, the very little that it matters, that the video alone makes the post worth a sticky in this section.

What I am wary of is the emphasis on cleric’s accessories and healing power runes. I used to run similar -- cleric’s accessories and this spec; armor was not PvT but Knight’s with beryl orbs -- but moved to berserker accessories instead. I was motivated by a) my understanding that healing power scales terribly for HoTs (check out some of the math for Healing Power in water skills) and doesn’t matter for when others use my water fields to blast-heal (i.e. it uses theirs) and b) the damage being awful.

In the video, your damage is quite low. I can gain the same field effects for my allies and provide similar healing (of course it’s not going to be quite as high) while also managing to dance around through the other elements and down or finish enemies. For example, there are even crits at times in the video that top out between 100 and 400 damage, a mere fraction of what they could be. Mind you, that’s what I noticed - I may be missing other numbers?

What are your thoughts with using it? Do you find that you are mostly sticking in water to capitalize on your stat focus? Have you played with other gear choices and found that you just weren’t able to keep an ally up like you can with the HP focus of this setup?

My goal here is a discussion, though I am critiquing the build. GW2 combat seems to benefit more from fitting in damage alongside other roles.

Meh, I disagree. I think you’re young and naive with a lot to learn about the world.

People in our world get upset by a lot of things. I’m very aware of that. For some, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was as serious as, say, depicting Muhammad. It is a silly thing to be upset about a fictional world that borrows from real world cultures, with no intent to represent or parody them, in developing its atmosphere. There are so many more pertinent problems in our world.

The tone of my post probably conveys my meaning rather poorly, but the gist is that I’m still quite frustrated by the situation regardless of the reality that may serve as the backdrop for it.

I’m not really sure how my sense of frustration is something that can be disagreed with, but that’s likely a result of writing a garbage post as a result of said frustration.

I’d bet I’m older than you’re assuming, which just makes it clearer that I should have given more thought to what I wrote or, at least, the word choice. Ah well. That’s a good sign to log off.

Leave daily/monthly achievement progress in the achievement panel.

Leave the top-right for dynamic events that pop up when in range, as they do in the world and WvW, etc.

Then provide tracking in the quest / story log like achievements have. Players can then choose to track what they want, be it story objectives or dailies or whatnot, and clutter or de-clutter the area as they wish.

----

Alternatively, give us little X icons to close the things we don’t want. If the worry is that players won’t see it and then be too stupid to figure out what to do, make us have to choose to close it every time we log a character in, even when switching chars.

The point is let the choice of what to show here be ours as much as possible.

Or do you mean that the keybinds you use for one class are not the ones you want to use for another class? If it’s this case, what makes them not "on the right keys" for the alt(s)?

We have the same number of skills in use at any time on any character, so I suppose I don’t quite get what makes your hotkeys good for one and bad for another in a way that can’t be fixed just by moving which utility is in which slot. Nodes in the world are per-character, so based on that it would make sense for this to be, as well.

Meta-achievement rewards for living story are per account, so based on that it would make sense for this to be once per day per account or something like that.

This is without taking into economic concerns. I guess in that light it will be released as something per-character at first until a bug fix within day or two to limit it to once per day per account.

At any given time, in any map zone, I always have potential and actual teammates.

That’s one thing I love about how mob tagging in PvE works and how easy it is to participate in WvW. Playing with your peers and other server members is a simple as playing the game -- parties and guilds are not required.

Don’t get me wrong -- parties and guild can be great, and many are. I’m just making the point that you don’t have to look at the world as "solo vs. guild", as it’s very much not like that.

But I might be taking the "play alone" too literally here.

Lol i love that title... I even suggested adding it to Gw2 if you have achieved it...

That being said its not that hard. There are crafting stations in every starter area. That means that I can spend 50G and level my toon from 2 - 80 with only doing crafting...

It just doesn’t bring back the joy and the hard earned achievement feel like it was in GW1. In gw1 It was exclusive title. NOT EVERYONE was capable of doing it.

The tutorial areas are even prior to the race’s city and the first starting zone. No crafting stations or vendors exist, and you won’t have access to your bank.

Jumping Puzzles and Mesmer portals

The fact that arenanet hasn’t responded to this thread yet, on their opinion of this matter, is kinda bothering me... its been at the top of the Suggestions forum for the past 2 days.. I think we deserve an answer so we can stop battling each other back and forth on the topic and just forget about it and go back to enjoying the game.

What reply is required? edit-- this is an honest question, with my reasoning behind it, hopefully it doesn’t come across as trying to argue

A player who uses a portal to complete a jumping puzzle has no bearing on whether or not you (a general you, not calling anyone out specifically) can do the puzzle.

If a group of players ports to the chest, you won’t suddenly have more difficult jumps to complete or lose control of your character.

And as long as the chests at the end of the puzzle continue to not offer some kind of ridiculous reward (let’s ignore that the exotic shoulders were 60s originally), no one’s going to benefit over other players by porting aside from a little bit of time.

So I cannot help but feel that most of the complaints about portals must be about the achievement points for jumping puzzles being trivial. Achievement points are a mess in any system. They sure do provide the carrot for us all to chase, but for whatever reason people also seem to think they mean anything about skill. They should just be for fun, and as such you shouldn’t care who has what achievements.

All that should matter, until the puzzle rewards become something of impact, is if you had fun and you enjoyed it. I don’t see how others’ using portals has any real bearing on that.

Oh, sure, you definitely get a taste of playing for the bad guys. Some of it is really, really fun! But your friend and you also share a moment, and it's one of a few hints that you're one of the DKs not sold on the whole idea of obeying the Lich King's will; as I recall it your friend even accepts his/her fate so that you live on and remember, so that you can fight it. Has there ever really been an MMO wherein the PC can be “bad”? I mean, more than just saying a few mean things or being a jerk to a companion NPC.

For the Horde !

Horde isn’t evil. It is just more manly, more awesome and better compared to the lame suckers from the alliance. Also, lok’tar ogar.

The Horde is definitely not evil. But it’s also my opinion that there are terrific people on both sides of that conflict — just as there are total jerkbags and scums as well. I’m not aiming to derail the thread to talk about this setting, but I have come to appreciate it for being dynamic, even amidst its cliches and weak characters, and not ever truly dropping “good” and “evil” on any one side or view.

So, who's next?

Apparently, a bunch of ragtag steampunk pirates are next. Maybe they’ve built a dragon.

People want more combat skins, or perhaps to be able to use town clothing in combat. More and more town clothing is added, but it still cannot be used in combat.

More players increase the length of encounters but not the skill required.

Area of effect attacks can crush your enemies in groups! But only five of them at a time!

Let’s create Orders to fight the dragons. We’ll each accept members of any race and nationality! Oh but wait working together is an abominable idea [until the PC comes along].

Slay an elder dragon, get rewarded with a few silver.

This. It kills me so much. "Here’s a token for a non-max item. Oh, if you want to use the skin, be sure to convert gold into gems or to buy gems for the transmutation crystals. Thanks for saving the world, sport."

At least GW1 campaign rewards were max, and I liked some of those skins (though I totally realize that point is quite subjective).

Talking to NPCs may start a Dynamic Event. Hearts are only on the map to insure you are in the area for any DEs. More of a means to an end, than a way to level up. Try exploring all around the area you are level-appropriate for.

Also, you can completely explore Divinity’s Reach for a few extra levels. Or gather some mats and craft a bit for some levels. Almost anything you do gives XP.

Good luck. =)

Both of these are great points (not that others in the thread aren’t, as well). Hearts give you an idea of where action happens, and if you can get involved in a DE at the same time you’ll have a greater boost in XP when you complete them.

Also I, too, would definitely recommend anyone wanting a head start or a little boost to catch up to hearts in the early levels to explore your race’s city map completely and then head through the asura gates to LA. Do LA, and then do one, two, or all of the remaining cities. Not only will you get a feel for the cities if it’s your first time visiting them, but you’ll get an enemy-free feel for how game exploration works and a decent chunk of XP.

It’s tedious when you are on X alt of out however many, but hitting the cities first kept me from having to grind out hearts or events between story, for the most part, on my characters.

Crafting also helps, but that might not be as easy to get going on your first character until you get some more supplies.

It might be in how you look at it.

The instanced nature of everything that wasn’t an outpost in GW1 meant it was easy to head to hotspots for endgame groups or to tour low-level missions and offer aid to new players or groups needing to fill slots in their party. Also, of course, the fact that -- outside of the tasks of farming or running -- content required parties encouraged adventurers to chat and joke around in towns and then party up and plow through quests in explorables and the like together.

In GW2, we have a wide-open world that doesn’t actually require party play throughout the whole experience from 1-80. Coupled with the world not being instanced (for the most part), there’s not as much impetus for a new player, or any player I suppose, to stand around and consider forming a party to tackle content. That said, the non-instanced nature paired with the way looting works (i.e. not limiting it only to the first player/party that pulls a mob) encourages dynamic group play.

We can still have random groups, they just might be as explicitly defined as you are used to from the GW1 style.

I have fun following friends around and playing with random people in the game, but I don’t usually see the need to party with random people I encounter. Most of the time, I have an idea about how I want to go around clearing a map as I level a character, and no matter how nice or entertaining other folks are often the hearts done already or the direction we are heading don’t align. Sometimes it’s annoying to have to go at someone else’s speed, regardless of if it is faster or slower. The GW2 system lends itself a lot more to helping and grouping when it’s needed and splitting as soon as it’s not.

Because of that, I like to think of /m (and even /s) as more valuable than /p when running about the world and to consider the whole map zone as my potential party mates.

Hopefully I’m getting the idea across. I am pretty worn out from working on research papers and might not be forming my thoughts well.

Sea of Sorrows spoiler, so don’t click if you haven’t read the book yet I guess.
Livia. edit: removed my other thoughts, don't want to give anything away.
