the solution to your quandary Op is to have the end game quest line solo-able with no effort for players who have been playing a couple of weeks? that’s not going to be fun for very long is it, in fact it sounds like a game for a young child. the final quest line is easily solo able, and once you get a grip of your skills you can annihilate huge swathes of enemies in HOT and solo champs (and its satisfying because you used your skill and knowledge to beat the odds)

May be worth looking at WOW, the model there is setup so the content makes sure it balances itself to be easy with guaranteed daily progress regardless of skill – worth a shout.

Do people like Meta Maps?

you have to look at it in context, and here you have a couple options when it comes to content in an open map:

1. single quest chain, once your done all that is left in a zone is gathering.

2. single quest chain, and once its done individual repeatable daily quests that are so transient they have to be solable.

3. Meta quest chain – long running quest chains that supports solo and group play.

No answer is perfect for long term play ability but you have to pick one at the end of the day and for me the last is the most interesting.

so what your describing is a 2v1 where an ally is in the circle fighting for the point and you are just left to freely stand there spamming you aoe with impunity. That’s not fighting against equally skilled players, thats 2v1. What happens when its 2v2 and the second players gets in your face?, what happens when your meters are on cooldown?, what happens when you have to fight someone 1v1 at melee range? (common in spvp) I love staff, but i also know pvp is not about lots of pretty numbers on the screen, that’s pveing.

Solo play - ascended gear

Most reliable as said is Crafting. Do not rely on drops from WvW or PvP, you could be waiting a long long time for them. I also wouldn’t go to PvP if you intend to not improve/try to win, just for the sake of still gaining pips towards rewards. Play to have fun, stop when it gets frustrating – enjoyable and fastest way to get ascended in game at mo.

don’t disagree with your comments bar spvp – its actually a guaranteed 5 pieces of ascended armor with choosable stats in a couple weeks of play (losing 1 in 2 fight), broken but true. only play when its fun though, the fights are usually good fun but can be frustrating after a while, stop when it gets frustrating and return later when you are recharged

Solo play - ascended gear

you can get ascended from pvp, wvw, fractals, crafting etc, for example 1 season of spvp will give you almost a full set of ascended armor.

That almost is one of the most perplexing choices they’ve made.

ye agree with that, nothing wrong with offering ascended gear, but the rate at which you get it is far far too fast. 1 piece per season based on average regular play would have been far more balanced.

thats why you melt the players in the circle and let your tanky friends cap it.
my ele has been full glass staff zerker since beta and i play them every night that i pvp

with meteor shower pummeling for 5k, lava font ticking away for 4k and fireball spam also landing 3-4k everything simply dies.
it gets even funnier if they try to rez.

i’m not saying its the best build ever, but it is certainly effective, you just need to be sneaky and attack from a vantage point (read: gank from afar while they’re fighting you allies :P),
if the enemy even looks in your direction you either need to pop earth and reflect or RUN or you’re dead in 2 seconds! :P

staff ele is how a glass cannon should be, its my belief that they have the highest damage possible in spvp, but they’re also one of the squishiest targets in the game :P

when it pays off it REALLY pays off,
however when it fails it really fails and you’ll feel like deadweight.

i have tons of clips of melting teams as zerker staff ele, i’ve been meaning to put them all in a compilation
Unfortunately as you say you are in trouble if you are under attack, the counter is to make distance, but you need to be in that circle to be contributing. Then there’s your cooldowns where you are totally ineffective, then the long cast times, then the slow avoidable autos, then the inability to burst a player. Melting a player just means you are playing a bad player – and that same bad player would melt twice as fast with either sceptre or dagger (both of which have higher damage than staff for pvp, aoe is simply useless background noise in arena fights)

‘You don’t need to keep mobs at 1200 range for staff to be good. It does just as much dps as d/w in close range. But you do have to manage your cooldowns more carefully’

thats the issue, play against anyone that knows staff ele at all and they will shut you down fast, cooldowns of aoe is irrelevant when you are targeted and you are staff, you cannot control engagement range.

full dps while using a support/aoe weapon is a contradiction in small arena based combat. put it this way, 1200 range spells in a game where you need to stand in a small circle with heavy melee fights for sustained periods will never work against equally or better skilled players.

What am I doing wrong?

vesica tempestas.1563

Hi fellow wielders of the elements
I main ele for two years now (my first toon) and I have no problems in PVE. Last year I started doing PVP (metabattle auramancer standard build) and managed diamond rank two times. After that I started playing warrior having a blast in PVP (gold 3 currently). Sadly, whenever I have to swap (cause team lacks support) to my ele, I am getting stomped. Perhaps I forgot how to play, I find it very difficult to survive. I am even losing 1 vs 1 when I am on point from revs/thieves/power war/guardians and their mothers. I use earth focus 5 very fast cause my health bar seems to vaporize in seconds (l2dodge issue I guess, dunno). I almost always have protection from auras, how the hell am I receiving so much damage?

I know my role is to provide support to group fights, but whenever I get focused, oh man, sometimes I don’t even manage to swap to earth for the invul.
Is there a combo I am missing? I understand I have too many questions so let me break them for better reference

1) I am on point and a “insert random class” comes. I am supposed to be one of the best bunkers in the game, correct? yet certain classes (power) destroy me, what do I miss for self sustain? Surely I am making many things wrong cause I have witnessed immortal eles on gold fighting against duos ON POINT (not using LOS) and surviving long enough.
2) I am getting focused on mid fight (or whatever fight). They stun me and the damage is so burst-y I don’t even have time to use focus earth 5 (git gud). Are there certain boons I miss while going on mid fight? Should I enter fight overloading earth?
3) Are there any combos/skills I am missing? I use earth 4 for the reflection against DH and afterwards OL earth for the same reason. I use fire 3 for the evade and blast the field with water 3 to provide might (and chill opponents).

many questions I know, trying to git gud again (or I was never really good at it, probably carried by the pro-nerfed class). Thanks in advance!

we are no longer bunker after the last set of changes, its all about running away from danger then recycling back into the action. The real skill is reading what your opponent is doing and reacting to that, which is a big difference from having control as a bunker class. Ele does well in a team that knows how to support the ele in times of danger – that often does not happen in a pug. Hopefully, eventually Anet will get it that having to be in close range to do your best damage means you must have sustained mitigation, either that or high damage at range but fragile.

Viable soloq builds?

in Elementalist

Posted by: vesica tempestas.1563

vesica tempestas.1563

Elementalists are poorly designed for 1v1 at present so you want to avoid it where possible, your value comes from buffing others unfortunately and hoping other players understand when to support your weaknesses (which ofc is less likely in a pug) Elementalise are also not really bunkers anymore against equally skilled players, so its all about smart rotation. Burst builds only really work against low skill groups, anyone with half decent skills will destroy you.

WVW PVP is a different story ofc, there’s a lot more scope there to play with higher dmg builds.

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

vesica tempestas.1563

How long has it been since Heart of Thorns launched? Reoccurring bugs from day 1 still aren’t fixed. We’re talking Heart of Thorns story quest that bug out and require you to restart the game. Dragon Stand meta that disconnects or crash your game at the final parts. Clearly if a half baked product is being pushed into the market, it has to be something worth the price, or even free. Since these problems have been reoccurring since day 1, it is safe to say that the devs have stopped working to provide an experience worth at least 50 dollars. I have 2 accounts, one full and one free, and the only reason I am not supporting with another full account is because I do not think the game is worth 50 dollars, not because of the lack of content, but because the devs are pushing out content that are still falling apart and are not doing anything about it.
If these bugs are happening in the free to play areas, do I care? No. Because it is free, there is no cost or commitment by the customers, but we’re paying a ton of money as a huge player base to support Anet hoping that they would at least give us something worth that. No content? I don’t care, at least fix the game and make it worth half the price. We don’t care for previewing BL chests. Fix the game. We don’t care for limited edition miniatures. Fix the game. We don’t care for fancy limited edition mail carriers. Fix the game. There’s no point creating new flashy content when the base is still broken. If the base is still intact and enjoyable, players will be happy with what they have and be more patient with future problems and upcoming content.

maybe you should read though all the release notes since HOT came out to appreciate exactly what the devs have delivered including fixes and new content. As for dragon quest, its strange because just about everyone has completed the main quest line, and just about everyone who wanted to has completed the meta many many many times.

in this particular case though you get the same level of convenience by buying a stack of master salvage kits, gems would be better spent on a convenience item that has no equivalent. Add on top the convenience of all the gold you save by using master over time and it adds up quite significantly. Silver fed should be modified to cost a fraction less than master then it would be a great buy.

Wyvern spawn on Flax Garden

vesica tempestas.1563

Ok, after getting killed here for the thousandth + time on “THE GREAT TREE FLAX GARDEN”, Im done. I’m seriously sick of this BS, full ascended armor and weps, and still getting ganked by 5-7 wyverns at the same time from thin air, all attacking me at the same time. I farm this daily, on every character, and theres no reason why I should be getting rekt by these “Adolescent” Wyverns. This spawn of wyverns is the most F-T up thing I have ever seen. You can sense my frustration I’m sure in my message, and I’m not the only person who farms this daily whos sick of this wyvern spawn. The event should not be in the middle of a kitten garden. EVER!

I’m sure theres going to be people who say, your builds suck, well no they dont actually. Hard to defend from 7-8 full zerker wyverns all at the same time when they spawn from no where, all around you, and instead of just 1 attacking, its the entire Fing group.

Originally in mmorpg in open world game play where there are groups in way of your goal, what you did was pick of the stragglers and worked your way in to the point where you could deal with/cc the rest. Nowadays people have learned to run and cant cope with anything that requires tactics or slows them down, must be frustrating.

Climbing out of bronze

in PvP

Posted by: vesica tempestas.1563

vesica tempestas.1563

So, since my post here this morning. Played 8 games, won 1. And you wonder why we get bored and afk?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not like I join a game and instantly not do anything. I jump in, try cap stuff etc. But I’m smart enough to realise that when my team uses 3 players to cap near-base point, that it’s probably going to end in a loss. But, I still try, half way through after the we’re many points behind, I don’t see the point in being a free kill anymore and just wait it out. I’d rather see my team all afk and lose fast than drag out a futile match, wasting time.

well the problem with selfishly afking (or did you ask your team if they minded that you made things worse by afking?) is that you are being part of the problem, its highly likely that at least one of those players is trying hard but just doesn’t have the skill yet so needs experience – which is impossible if someone throws in the towel because they don’t like to lose heavily.

put it this way, imagine a top end player with much more skill than you went afk because he didn’t liked what you were doing – put the shoe on the other foot and empathize.

Absolutely agree with OP, i’m in a similar boat in that i’m probably a borderline silver/low gold player (i’m held back by the fact I only play 1 class) , started too high in gold, dropped to bottom silver, and am slowly creeping up to gold again with much more wins than loses. I get spikes but overall it seems to match up to my real skill level.

question here re ELE (dagger/focus typical meta build)

I find im doing ok until I become the focus of the attack ( I focus on rotation and not ending up 1v1), so my question is, how do you deal with this in terms of spell selection etc, for example i’m along the lines of the following, but i dont feel i have control yet:

1. Identify im under focus
2. If I start dropping a lot of health I switch to stone, pop invuln then run, switching to ice to cast cc as i run to slow them down then air for speed boost
3. hope they give up and drop off me (i run through the main fight if i can) sometimes i turn and face them down, but at that point they know I have felt the need to run and have blown cool downs.

Is Stone – water – air good? should i be facing opponent down more? What would you do?

2 Missing Systems = Fishing & Housing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

vesica tempestas.1563

Two systems im glad are not ingame.
No housing. While it looks nice, it adds nothing in an MMO. Guild halls are much more important. As for fishing, what does it add? Do you have a food supply shortage. If not, it adds nothing to the game. If you want it for relaxation between heavy contends, you might want to close gw2 and instead try games like minecraft or fishing simulator, where relaxation is thr purpose

thats your personal opinion. Housing and fishing adds a lot for players who enjoy worlds that allow good immersion and have historically been enjoyed by many in great titles. See Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, ESO, Wildstar, LOTR, Rift, Archeage, BDO, WOW amongst others. Not everything needs to have an Adrenalin hit/reward to be fun. Older players get this more than younger players perhaps.

D/F Auramancer PVP HELP!

using the maneuverability of the spells to dip in and out of battles as required is key along with reacting to your opponent rather than blindly casting on cool down (I often fail at this!). You need to bear in mind ele is not in a good place for solo play at present so your real goal is to rotate to where other team members are fighting, and knowing when to run from a fight to recover. Avoid glass cannon builds, they are not powerful enough to 1 shot due to mitigation and you melt when focused and/or playing a good player which is really bad for the team.

Yes, I’m fine with that. What I am not fine with is that in platinum, the pool is extremely small. I see the exact same people from yesterday today. They can’t climb the ladder because every win only grants you 8-12 points but every loss is 13-17. It’s ludicrous! That’s what I am complaining about. The population of PvP is not big enough to accommodate the system being implemented. A friend of mine with over 400 games climbed the ladder from Silver 3 to Platinum 2 but that was the highest he went. He dropped back down slowly bit by bit afterwards. It’s not fair for him and it’s not fair for the people trying to climb the ladder that you know Platinum is the highest you’ll be stuck at.

so people are happy when they climb, but unhappy when they drop. re platinum if everyone got 17 for a lost and 13 for a win then no-one would stay in platinum for any length of time at all, is this the case?

no actually what we are seeing is people blaming mmr, bad teams, its always ‘stacked’ somehow automatically to make you lose, balance etc. in effect losing always = something to blame. read Op post again for e.g.

to clarify what matters in PVP is great pvp content that where winning is actually not relevant, its the fight and having an opportunity to apply your skills that is fun. Take Eve as an example, where losing well is just as important as winning well.

Players need to learn what "DPS" means

vesica tempestas.1563

Do you walk into a car dealership and say “how km/h is this car?” Do you refer to a supercar as a “km/h car” instead of just saying a fast car? No, and yet those terms have been used for a much longer period of time by a much larger amount of people. They still haven’t evolved because people have common sense and understand the difference between “fast” and “km/h”. Even a hillbilly would laugh at you for saying such absurdities.

And the last card you play is pretty much, “I know we’re doing something wrong, but I want to keep doing it wrong because tradition”. Really? This is your ace? Come on.

Time’s never been wasted learning new things. Begin by learning how to use simple terms properly. And don’t go around saying “I can km/h my car a lot” because you’ll look silly, just friendly advice.

you used ‘melee dps’ to describe a class/role in a previous post, how is this different from “km/h car” exactly?

I know GW2 is more of a PvE game than it is a PvP game and so people don’t need to care about knowing such terms with as much finesse as a Starcraft or Dota(1 or 2) player, but here’s an easy explanation in layman’s terms.

Let’s imagine two characters with two different classes, A and B, ok?

Class A has a spell that hits 1 000 000 damage in a second, but only once every hour.
Class B has a sword that hits 1000 damage every tenth of a second.

The DPS of class A is 1 000 000 : 3 600 = 277 DPS
The DPS of class B is 1000 × 10 = 10 000 DPS!

Class B has hugely more DPS than class A!

Now I don’t know what class or build in Guild Wars 2 has the most DPS, but stop refering to nuker classes (tons of damage but huge cooldowns or casting time) as DPS classes because they aren’t! (except if they actually are, in GW2, I don’t know, never bothered to calculate which class had the highest DPS) Also DPS is not a verb for antarctic phoque’s sake.

Thanks.

This is no different than to your reference to ‘Fighters (melee DPS)’ a fighter is not a ‘melee damage per second’ he is a character who does melee damage.

The real point however is that it doesn’t matter, after 15 years in mmorpg the mmorpg community understand what is meant by ‘dps that boss’ and we don’t need to be told off.

Or just wait, whats the rush?, your already farming an entire set bar 1 item in a matter of days when previously it would have taken peeps months to a year. good example, i was gradually building up a celestial set over the last year crafting as i go, now boom, a whole alt set in 2 weeks. T

hey should fix it by making it 1 or 2 piece per season depending on how well you do, or in fact since the gear is not used in spvp actually move it to wvw or pve where it is used and therefore belongs.

i love sceptre focus and ranged dps, but i have now given up on it for the moment, because it is significantly inferior to dagger – the reasons ?:

- The sceptre burst is fun, but easy to avoid, and sustained dmg is meh

- Sceptre is mid range, but you need to hold points in melee range negating the benefits of range.

- With Tempest you have to move into melee range to apply Overloads – again totally defeating the purpose of being ranged.

-Dagger fire 3 is really strong, the maneuverability is massive for ele survivability + burst

-Sceptre heal – practically non existent v Heal 2 on dagger and no dps ?? Whereas you have strong heal, cc and dps for dagger

-Dagger Air is stronger with skill 3, skill 3 is useless for sceptre

-Dagger 2 offers more on demand survivability making earth a stronger package of mitigation

I really wish they would sort out Sceptre, Ele badly needs that ranged dps role with mitigation – its like the 2 weapons are being developed by 2 developers who do not know what each other are doing.

as with all AOE lava font is not meant to be fast to apply damage, its meant to be applied to a group of people where the skill is maximizing the aoe damage through prudent placement. The damage output is high for groups that are hit, and averages out over time when you take into account avoidance. that’s the point of the spell. if it was fast you would have a high impact AOE that basically doubles up as a high dps single target as well – cake and eating it.

Wut? Everyone who plays GW2 pvp is constantly moving. Unless you can somehow chill players long enough to place a Lava Font where 95% of it will do damage to those players then you’re done with it, ggwp for you. But in the spvp scenario where you cannot run dedicated power specs with reliable soft cc application (chill for instance) that ain’t possible. Prudent placement won’t work 100%, because you’ll have to put it where you’re pretty sure the enemy player is moving and hope she/he doesn’t dodge or walk out. You’re pretty much just saying: hey, don’t step over here, okay?
The amount of swiftness and dodge won’t allow you to “put prudently an AoE in order to maximize its damage”, especially an AoE that’s so slow to hurt foes and tickes slowly its damage.

exactly, and that’s why AOE based builds never works in pvp as we have seen historically in just about every mmorpg. Now if you want to try and make it work, placing aoe carefully to make it work is self evidently the personal skill that is required, unless you want it to be competitive single target as well as aoe while at the same time not being overpowered AOE, the god spell in effect.

Players need a guide about rotations

in PvP

Posted by: vesica tempestas.1563

vesica tempestas.1563

There are endless videos that show those that are interested in learning in rotations, its literally two search words in google. If a player is not interested they are not likely to suddenly become engaged because of outdated concepts like tutorials. A better carrot (if it were possible) would be to reward good rotation through the game, e.g ‘top gameplay’ , ‘least deaths’, ‘top activity overall’ very difficult ofc.

I get it, you want to nuke things fast with staff at 1200 range while conserving the actual power of staff. We all do, now wake up.
It’s not about believing, it’s about what we have right now. And my goodness, you have reading issues!: when did I see I want to nuke faster in staff? Some of staff skills are slow, and they’re not Fireball, Arc Lightning and other AAs, I was talking about Lava Font, which is slow to put damage. To simplify it for you: the damage output isn’t instant and it pulses slowly, more than 1s I think. That’s slow, and that’s not good for a weapon which requires proper distance with a low range (1200 range) where you’re always getting out of range and obstruted. Now, read everything again.
Biggest Joke of Anet

The biggest problem with the system is the skew caused by allowing duo’s, and you were one of those that asked for that – which is strange because you complain about the system changing every season (how do you expect the system to evolve exactly without this?)

Personally it feels more competitive this year, although like yourself i’m a little frustrated at the ele issues (must take heal or toughness to compensate for poor armor or be a sitting duck).

Some people shouldn't be allowed in ranked.

illusory suitability or.. If you are placed too low then obviously you will be better than everyone you play against and you will climb fast by tipping the balance in a fight.
If not then you may be where you should be. The first sample set of 10 games to calculate your position is fat too small a sample set, time tells. As for the the luck argument , it is statistically irrelevant and anecdotal at best.

The root problem ofc is the human element, even if you had 5 people with the same accurate score, there is no way to measure how a player plays on a given day, so you need a large sample set over time to settle down your rating. Relax enjoy the fights and don’t worry about your rank and things will be fun.

agree with this, the archetypal mage in a GW2 mages with pvp is roughly the following:

- Close range, highest dps, high maneuverability or kite ability, lowest survivability (dagger, arguably not enough kiting/survivability )
- Far range, low survivability, high aoe, low single target (staff, not suited to 5 v5 spvp capture point at all imo as per classic mage )
- Medium range, low survivability, medium single target, medium aoe – (sceptre, sustained dps isnt there yet)
- Support flavours

and so on and so forth

What doesn’t work is far range high aoe dmg AND high single target dmg – obviously Overpowered, and in fact would not be fun, as you would be instant first target call in all scenarios.

Mystic Coins 1 gold each

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: vesica tempestas.1563

vesica tempestas.1563

Something desperately needs to be done. So many older recipes treated mystic coins as worthless and demanded them in hefty amounts. Now most of those recipes and items are unobtainable due to the daft coin price.

And it is only going to go up, up up unless someone makes changes.

your confused about supply and demand. If prices are going up and up then people are hording or using their coins, if you spent all yours you need to earn more, that’s the answer. Incidentally something has already been done, Anet increased supply (through daily rewards) and introduced items that use coins – guess why you want more coins..
