Bad example of grind: leveling up mastery while doing variety of interesting and engaging events across four beautiful looking maps with amazing music.

How many non-sequitir fallacies can you fit in to one sentence? Or how many personal opinions for that matter. Does that make it a grind if they don’t find the events interesting and engaging? Does it make it a grind if they don’t think the maps are beautiful? Does it make it a grind if they don’t like the music or even play with it off?

Plus, even the one single argument related to the topic is false. You don’t get to do the events in four maps, or else no one would be complaining about arbitrary gating of map content.

You get to explore a relatively tiny part of one map, being gated behind some mastery from the remainder of the map. You then have to farm events in that tiny portion of the map, and in no section of the map is there enough events that you will not have to repeat one or all of them many many times, until you finally get the mastery necessary to overcome the gate. At which point it opens to another area, where you hit another mastery wall to overcome, now, by farming events from both areas. And it’s only after you’ve repeated this process who knows how many bleeding times that you actually even have four maps.

I like the idea behind what ANet meant to do with this expansion, creating a progression system in an MMO more like Metroid, or Zelda, Castlevania, or many other adventure games. In fact it sounds amazing and I wait for the day when someone actually pulls it off, because ANet, didn’t. Those games feel great because when you hit those walls, they require you to explore, work, and discover and overcome unique challenges until you find or earn that one thing you are looking for that gets you past the wall. They do not require you to go back, and repeat the content you have already done, over and over and over again, to fill an arbitrarily chosen bar to get past the wall. Masteries are great, hear they are challenging and I love that. But the XP grind behind them, is a hang on from archaic MMO systems that ANet really had no logical reason to keep, but did, and I can’t imagine for any reason but fear that minmaxers would blow through the content and complain.

If that’s your argument then you might as well say that to everythimg, what if they don’t like games, what if they don’t like pve. That’s not an issue, of pve content doesn’t cater to you then why are you in pve anyway.

We only get to explore tiny part of the maps is straight up false, you get access to at least 80% of the map with just basic gliding and mushroom, you would have an valid points if they doesn’t take less than AN HOUR to unlock.

It was a fairly decent article overall. There’s some bias, but it wasn’t totally fanboyish.

Can’t believe he wants to use a thief, though. Thief feels very underwhelming with HoT.

It comes to personal preference, I am loving daredevil and find it’s the most fun spec to play in the game, animation look so cool and my character has that swift ans bursty feeling to it. Feels like a monk is what I’m saying.

The HoT expansion introduced a lot of grind to the game. Personally I think this (eg mastery farming and the long track to unlock your elite spec) partly ruined the game for me…

I can guarantee you that soon there will be a lot of reviews with this exact feedback

No, because they are experienced and intelligent people that knows the difference between time consuming and grinding.

Nice example of grind: 16 hours of cof farm killing same mobs over and over.

Bad example of grind: leveling up mastery while doing variety of interesting and engaging events across four beautiful looking maps with amazing music.

warbignime.4610

yeah they made a game and forgot the loot…i know the long term plan is to impoverish the player base but man we just bought this thing and we got nothing in terms of loot (armor/dyes/weapons).

the environments are unique yet there is nothing of interest in them. there is a huge city for the exalted (a very strange culture) and yet most of the loot you find in the battles near it could just as easily be found in queensdale ! .

2 new armor sets is not enough…not even close. adding insult to injury are the endless amount of new items being offered in gem store-based on the expansion we just paid for.

anet fix this…put the artists and designers to work making armor/weapons/dyes/qol changes.

What? That’s not even true like at all.

Good Example Of Grind
- Sitting in CoF P1 for 16 hours killing the same 25 mobs
Bad Example Of Grind
- Running around 4 maps completing a wide variety of events

You don’t have to repeat the same events over and over. It’s not even FASTER, it’s easier. Exploring while doing story and adventures, do events when you come across is way faster and way more fun than grind same events. You choose to grind, not the game forcing you.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

warbignime.4610

The thing is you don’t HAVE to farm same events over and over, hell it’s not even faster. Just explore the jungle, you don’t have to max mastery in a week. Play the game regularly and leveling while enjoying, don’t let level be your goal.

The issue is that you cannot do A, B and C without Mastery X, Y and Z, so the zones limit you to the content you can actually get exp from, can’t get exp from the story because its locked, cannot exp from some of the areas and challenges because they are locked too.

So you can only do what you have access to, which in turn turns it into you grinding the same events over and over.

At least in main Tyria, you can do ALOT of stuff to work towards your masteries, but HoT is far too restricted.

And I surely do not condone the shear amount of experience required for some of these masteries, it is just abhorrent how they pretty much multiply the amount instead of putting some meaningful content to unlock it instead.

You have access to at least 80% of the content once you get basic gliding and mushroom numping which honestly take less than 2 hours just by playing normally.

Am I Reading this correctly?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: warbignime.4610

warbignime.4610

…snip “The Mastery system is a new approach to endgame progression. It represents a new way to grow your characters once they’ve hit level 80”.

Mastery system. Not the specialization system. That’s what ArenaNet said would be the “kind of progression after level 80 that would take longer than 1 afternoon”.

It was a massive mistake to gate the specializations behind a grind wall. It’s obvious that, after 3 years of a very stale game, people would like to explore the new content with the new skills and traits. If unlocking the specializations didn’t require such a grind, we would have significantly less complaining here.

This X 1000. I am more than happy having to unlock all the new masteries whilst discovering all the jungle has to offer. But even though I have 21000 AP, map completion on all of my 9 characters, I am forced to find others to get my full elite spec.

If they were to reduce the amount to 200 or so for all the trait lines it would have shown you to have actually put in some effort either in Tyria or the new maps, but when they gate it, not only behind group events, but also masteries it becomes a chore.

Why is rewarding your veterans such a bad thing?

It’s really not hard to find 20 soloable hero points with basic mastery unlocked, take less than 2 hours to get 20 if you know what you are doing I would say.

Your logic is based on the idea that if there were no hearts, there wouldn’t be anything else in their place. The only thing hearts did for the player besides karma and map completion was add a few armor and weapon skins, and recipes to the game.

Guess what – meta events give karma. Participating in said events gives you % completion rewards and currency for that zone. New vendors give recipes and weapon/armor skins (and more) once the mastery for access is unlocked.

So to my understanding, there is plenty of direction and different forms of progression depending on what you want to do. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t still theme park, but the expansion sure has a lot more to offer than what hearts offered back in the day and now. Your whole ‘no hearts no direction’ argument really falls apart here. Find a different reason why you have a problem with the expansion, because this is bogus.

No, and even by your own admission, heart quests were added to give players the ability to actually progress. Otherwise people would be stuck grinding the same two events over and over, which is what people are saying they do not want to do.

No hearts were add because new player feel lost otherwise. Devs literally said this.

BTW there’s a difference between forum complaint and constructive feedback.

And why wouldn’t they? I find that in game more people I interact with are frustrated with having to grind one of 2 options to get hero points: WvW Ktrains, or the Map completion. And to add to this there are nearly an un-listable amount of tangential problems with the hero point system.

It is broken, it needs a fix, and I hope the devs are not too dumb to realize that.

That’s not even true, I have not met a single person complaining in game about this. Except the rank 4 mastery thing which devs are fixing. During my 20 hours play session I have not met a single person in game complain about HoT, all I heard was praise. And I don’t even know there are people hate mastery before I read forums.

By and large people are fine with masteries. The main issue driving forum criticism right now is the hero point system for unlocking elites and that’s also what the OP was saying.

Is it really that bad? When you have leveled up all your mastery you can blow through them very quickly. Finding and doing 20 soloable hero points in the jungle without having to level mastery would take less than 2 hours, I bet peolle can do it in less than one.
