Some other questions that could disregard a lot of stuff: is this just based on 5 games? Or 5 teams? Did you have problems with them before patch? Are you fighting even matched fights or are people trickling in and out? Have you tried out this instant win combo to see its weaknesses? Are you going against premades? I don’t even want to take this seriously but you’re quite determined that it just isn’t right. You even said that you couldn’t pinpoint what that were doing with traits or skills that made it like this. Knowing what your enemy is trying to do is the first step to stopping it.

Sorry man I feel like I crushed your hype. I know its all over the place but a little more control over that pet and its skills + maybe a trait that dodges when we dodge imo that should be baseline or something. That way pet can combo with us, we have more control and our pet won’t die as fast to cleave. I’d feel like the poor little guy was actually trying to help then too! Right now I feel like we grabbed the mutt of the litter for our pets.

Looks an awful lot like rapid fire without the vulnerability, range, slight amount of damage, and utter lack of cool down. It also may or may not be generating adrenaline like a champ on top of it. Warrior probably needs something in the way of buffs besides rampage but I wouldn’t wish all the rapid fire complaints on another class

@nassau “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” I also don’t know why that one suspicious clone does other stuff than auto attack. iZerker is the phantasm that does the spinning attack at you in melee range- don’t dodge in the direction that it’s moving or it will usually catch you at the end. Have you tried making a Mesmer just to look at the strong weapon skills? Mesmers are strong but it’s not because of hiding beside clones or just the phantasm.

Maybe it’s some of the strong desire not to be a transform thing kicking in for me, but I doubt it. If they had to make transforms for all the possible pets, it’d be a lot of work just for a line that might not even be used by every ranger build.

Man I love the pet shadowstep idea. I really want that somewhere available for rangers now! Also, I was wondering how you guys would feel if there was a way to keep just the boons on one pet and give them to the other on pet swap. Probably not on this trait also but maybe somewhere else? Might stacking on axe to do a beast master sorta thing would be a bit easier.

@mistsim I only use it for the maul tells. Wouldn’t the quickness with the pseudo leap of the hilt bash decrease its effective range even more? Or are you able to make it work because you’ve got the super speed to get right on top of them?

Ok I haven’t sifted through the long thread here to check but is overcharging restricted to in combat? Otherwise people are mostly going to camp an attunement ooc. Which would mean they could precast that long overcharge before they enter a fight and reap the benefits from it which have to be pretty dang good for something to have that long of a cast. Did I miss anything that would prevent this?

Yea we’re stuck waiting now. But I just hope that we don’t settle for the “I hope Druid fixes the ranger” type of talk that I’ve started to see. If Druid really is that good then we would all be forced into it and that would be kinda terrible if you ask me. Since we’ve apparently got a lot of time before we hear anything, we should go for fixing core issues so trait lines just determine a build’s style and not viability by default.

Don’t forget to include how frustrating it is to have counterattack miss a majority of the time or being completely countered by shadow shot. It also makes me sad when I’m using it to run away from a Mesmer and then I see a greatsword phantasm come up and know I’m about to whiff if I keep blocking.

I had typed up an incredibly salty comment but I’m going to try to make it more constructive. I really do like hearing that some issues are being fixed and I had noticed of couple changes already. I feel bad for the game designers right now in tbat there’s a ton of pressure from us for balance and I’m sure tons of internal pressure for making HoT. One small gripe that’s becoming worse is seeing ‘soon’ after all of these types of posts. As much as having a deadline would force them to meet it or have an uproar, not having an idea of whether that means days, weeks, or months is starting to get me decently frustrated.

Yea bearbow references kill me a little inside everytime I hear them. What’s funny is that they mention the bear all the time, yet if that’s really the way that they thought we played the class then we should be given a whole bunch more of DPS on our weapons. They really don’t feel like much more than a meat shield at times but it feels like we’re expected to have cat class damage landing hits at a much higher percentage at least in terms of pvp balance.

That’s tough man. Maybe you should look into finding a group of your own? Solo queue was fun when my buddies weren’t on, but it really doesn’t seem to encourage that higher level of cooperation which you apparently experienced in your matches and that’s the type of play I think we should encourage.

I can’t remember exactly how the match maker groups together people on their MMR, but I think it’s partially discussed on another forum post that I’ve read. Maybe looking for that could shed some light on why the situation is as is? I wanted to comment because I’d like to see my MMR and how it stacks up for personal improvement reasons.

Imo, ele looks too good with EA and too bad without the EA’s. I get that they need sustain to make up for their low hp pool and what not but it seems like you can get something that is tanky, mobile, and able to do damage (albeit not in the form of spiky power damage). Is there a way to meet in the middle here that anyone can come up with?

Yea I guess the aoe and not being able to strip it is nice. It would make 3 rangers with it together a hilarious sight. On a side note, I’ve wondered why our spirit that pulses that 1 stack of might for 1 sec every 3 isn’t pulsing fury. There could be potential synergy there and something that isn’t useless like a fleeting might stack for the trade off of a gm trait.

The thief part was @dhawk. My response in the first paragraph was about the range for you. I did get confused in thinking you said you were playing thief also. I apologize for that. Disregard the last bit about thief gapclosers. You did say that you thought it had the upper hand in dueling on a lb but I’ve not seen many set up where you start at 1500 range unless it’s just a random encounter and not what I think of when someone says duel.

Since you’ve now said that 1200 range is ok because you can fight back and 1500 is bad because you cannot, let me point out why you would not have to gap close more than once to get into the 1200 range. The first option I see is PBS. That one does have a specific animation now. At max range you should be able to dodge it if you’re looking for it. It is tough to dodge up close but the further out you go the more reaction time you get. Ranger fears come from the pet. If the pet has managed to close the gap on you before you make it the 300 range to 1200 then I don’t really know what you’re doing or the ranger is playing aware and had the pet going before you and should be rewarded for it. Same story with taunt and knockdown. If he knocks you down with a trap that far away- the only other knockdown left iirc then again it should be rewarded for forward thinking. If you’ve got him dodging backwards then that’s free gap closing time for you in addition to a wasted dodge for when you get there.

Please don’t turn this into name calling. I don’t like to be referred to as an idiot and would appreciate if you stopped that.

Although I really like pulsing fury for remorseless reasons, don’t we already have pretty easy access to fury and the potential for either 100% aoe fury or close to it? That extra fury wouldn’t really do much for non-marksmanship builds would it?

I’m seriously looking at Revenant S/S with Shiro thinking, it is a Sword Ranger with Counterattack and Shadow Strike/Scorpion Wire offhand, LR, heaps longer QZ, no animation lock on AA, and everything else the Ranger should have had. Like, a million times better than Ranger with Sword. As well as being able to trait for bulk life steal.

Ikr?!? Plus it has the added benefit of knowing that devs will be paying attention to it. It already got buffs to a lot of stuff people thought was weak. I really don’t like the theme of the class compared to ranger. However I think it’d be a fairly safe switch knowing that they’ll try to make it equal to others quickly or else waste all the hype they’ve tried to generate for the expansion.

Ok thread started conplaints about 1500 range. I’d trade it in a heartbeat to be better in close range personally. 1500 range is only useful if the enemy stays at 1500 range lol sounds almost too simple. That advantage especially against a thief shouldn’t take but a second or two to close into where both can hit with their skills.
Then it moved over to rapid fire. Well it’s the only burst lb has. Ever see anyone even mention the damage from hunter’s shot, PBS, or barrage in terms of a pvp setting? The first two are utility and the third is the only aoe. If rapid fire took a hit, what’s left to try to kill anyone on a lb?
Lastly, (this is the part I refrained from saying for a bit so I could be somewhat constructive) you sound like you’re running glassy on your thief with those numbers. How does that give an accurate measure of how strong a skill is? Is it fair to balance damage against what we assume is a valk thief setup? Assuming you do, if you run glass then you have to be willing to die to things that feel cheesy because of the lack of defenses.

Yea I’ve kind of been wondering if stripping pet damage is the cheap fix to the problem. I personally really like the idea in theory. If we could keep our pet for the f2 and other skills they have while taking all their dps and putting it onto our weapons I’d be a happy ranger. Some damage based pets would be worthless but maybe could have skills changed so that they could do support? Otherwise I vote jcbroe as volunteer dev!

I have hundreds of hours played on my elementalist. I know the trait isn’t OP and that it has many glaring weaknesses; personally, I think it could use a buff or redesign because sitting in Earth to avoid conditions is just tedious and limiting.

(snipped out a lot to avoid clutter) Typo? The one it looks like you’re trying to describe is stone heart and that’s only for crits. Either that or there goes hundreds of hours in earth attunement. Camping earth would only mean you’re losing all the potential boons, attacks, and heals from switching and that wouldn’t be good at all for keeping the trait up and staying alive in general.

I’m not saying you’re idea isn’t interesting, but instead of adding an entirely new mechanic, how bout making storm spirit just… useful and getting rid of swiftness as the passive boon and just making it reduce all skill cooldowns by an additional 10%?

Stole some of your ideas…

MDG; When your health drops below 75%, you cast Sharpening Stone. While below 50% health, you gain 1s of Stability every second and +250 power and condition damage. If you fall below 25% health, you cast Signet of Stone.

(not much point in casting SoS at the same time as Enlargement).

I would use that then.

I really like the whole tier effect your idea creates. Better effects as it gets more dangerous are fine by me. I’d use that.

What was he running? That’d be more helpful to start a thread with some facts here. To let you know a bit about ranger removal, there’s ONE specialization line that gives literally all our condition removal from traits and it’s a competition between 2 grandmaster traits. All in all, we have 1 pet to knock off 2 conditions (a bear :p), a potential for 5 survival skills (when trained) to remove 2 each, healing spring which knocks off one a pulse, a signer for 1 every 10 and an active to dump them all on our pet (usually killing it in the process if swap isn’t up), and the potential for shouts with rune to clear one a pop or Lyssa rune for 5 on ult. Theres a couple other runes but not really worth mentioning. I’m not sure if any of those can laugh off a condi burst without being hurt pretty badly in the process as long as your condi burst wasn’t 10 stacks of burning lol. Btw what weapon was he running? I’m going to assume an axe for those might stacks but maybe something else.

Hey guys I just was thinking the symbol from light on your feet wasn’t lasting very long. I looked and it says that it is supposed to be lasting for 4 seconds. When I leave my cursor over the spot the buff comes in at, I can only see 2 seconds. While this likely means it’s a 3 second thing since it might be going too fast for me to see, can someone else verify/deny this for me so I can see if I’m going crazy or not? Thanks!

This is just a thought, but would a livestream of them talking balance or just actually going about how they balance ever be a thing? Then when changes come out, we’d be just as guilty for any glaring errors that we couldn’t alert them to in advance.

I gotta echo one big thing here. I’m much more understanding when I know what is going on. Yea there’s those bugs op mentioned, but if I had some idea of why it was taking so long it’s not as bad. Just hearing a “hey the code is really wonky with taunt (just an example) and we need to do a whole lot of work, but it’s at the top of our list right now” is all I’d really need to feel better about it. There was a glimmer of hope when one person acknowledged a bunch of things they saw weren’t perfect, but then no comment by anet that I could find on big things like the engi nades.

I’d like to see this trait function passively without the dodge requirement. Lead the wind is practically the same trait for longbow, yet you don’t see any requirement for it to function. Maybe reduce the targets per arrow to 3 (how often will you be able to hit 5 with the shortbow anyway) and drop the damage buff to 5%. There, it’s now a potential pickup over quick draw (although I love quick draw too much to ever drop it).

Anyone talk about how bad Most Dangerous Game is? Sitting at <50% health seems like a really poor decision. Not to mention how it takes you at least 8 seconds to gain the most benefit from this trait. Why not simply add 200-300 power to the ranger when their health falls below 50%? Yes, I know that doesn’t scale with boon duration, but it’s fundamentally better. If we wanted to get interesting we could scale in increase in power based on health thresholds.

Burst Condi LB + Axe/Torch

Well.. not to be a downer or anything, but here’s why I don’t want to try using the lb in a condition spec. On its own, there’s all of 0 damaging conditions that it can apply from untraited weapon skills. So that’s pretty rough. However, you do have the ability to blast out a rapid fire and stack some bleeds. So let’s consider that for a second. There’s 10 shots so 10 chances to bleed. But there’s a 66% chance to get the bleed proc on crit. Now we’re down to 6-7 stacks of bleed. But then there’s the whole crit chance thing. Even with fury that build is going to be roughly 60% to crit I’d say. That knocks your bleeds down to about 4 stacks. That’s not really that good in the way of damage especially when the sb autoattack can 100% get one from flanking and that’s not even on a cd and it can still proc those on crit bleeds too! In addition it also has poison on it’s 2 skill that will benefit from your condition damage. I don’t think the ability to get the free couple of hits at 1500 range will justify all the other shortcomings that are associated with using the lb. For those reasons, I think you would find greater success in using the shortbow!

For example (not my opinion btw it could be x-75% y-3 seconds z-2 stacks) for what you would consider to have a toss-up between that and the other 2 gm traits.
2: What could be added/changed to the current mechanic to make it at that toss-up level? For example, the trait could also pulse fury or give a flat damage boost at that level. I’d love to hear everyones’ thoughts!

Yea, in fact I was trying to get the conversation back to what he was doing. He just laid out some ideas and had people start talking. I wanted to really guide people down my first option because I see a really lazy fix- if any- coming to this where they only change how many might stacks we get or the % we get it at. I wanted the info to be there for anet if they’d ever read it so we don’t get like 2 might stacks for 3 seconds or something equally as bad.

So it sounds like the main problem the op has with the thing is that even though he is forced to attack the pet and target it for the duration of the taunt the problem lies in that during the taunt without changing the effects of the taunt previously mentioned that he can’t have another target selected for after the effect ends. Did I get that right? To which I ask, isn’t that just an opposite effect of stealth? It forces you to retarget with the added bonus of not having to be a CC which you must land and is something that you cast on yourself so there’s no “missing” a stealth like a taunt. Or do you also have problems with that mechanic too? Btw the hitting through invuln is just a complete bug and should be patched, so please don’t include that.

Well for WvW, which I do not play often so forgive me if I’m slightly misguided, zerging rangers are considered pretty undesirable. Solo roaming or small scale stuff in WvW we’re considered one of the better ones if not one of the best. PvP seems to be ok for rangers except for the elite level- based on the lack of them. However, Ele’s are able to compete with rangers in all of these cases or blow them out of the water in the case of zerging. But playing this class for whatever reason is still a blast! But if solely for the purposes you mentioned, it’d probably be safer to go ele. They seem to be pretty good for everything.

The only people who say ranger is op are the ones complaining about rapid fire :p… but seriously in almost every case (I’m not sure why I even read them anymore but I still do) it’s usually rapid fire and nothing else. The only other op ability thread I’ve seen was our underwater 3 heal lol.

Out of curiosity, does the spike trap seem to peel off more than one attacker at a time? Like if a thief and mesmer combo would try to jump you and both teleport at almost the same time but one slightly after the other, would it interrupt both of them or just the first to get there?
