The question of nighttime effects for Howler is a separate issue, but I believe the first Hot Fix (yesterday) corrected the other effects issue. If not, please submit an in-game bug report so the team can investigate.
I’d love to get the Shatterer statue, it’d look amazing with my other assorted dragons, so I was really disappointed to find out it’s US only.
I’m asking about that.
And of all the figures — and I did like them all — The Shatterer was the one that impressed me the most. It’s really intricate and detailed!
so can you at least try to put them on different teams?
It does try, in fact the scoring on checks for duplicates at the team level. It’s just being overshadowed by other things.
Part of the problem is that mm is holding these players back, trying to find them matches where they’re unique… but eventually it gets overshadowed by other scoring rules (like the age score, which is used to compensate for long queue times) and they all dump into the same match.
Another part of the problem is we will not do anything about pre-mades with duplicate professions, other than the scoring penalty they take, but that only means longer queue times.

The scoring that works against multiple of the same class is working… there just are so many it can’t hold back the flood.

We do take on board that this change is not to everyone’s liking, but the change was required and not optional.
With the new build — which just went live — I believe many of these issues will be corrected.

In the end, this recipe is voluntary. The item is desirable but not essential. Players may decide for themselves if going for a particular item is right for them. In the end, I believe that it really is that simple.
In case anyone missed this part of the Patch Notes:
Players logged in after 4:00 p.m. PDT [should say PST] on December 15 will receive their first daily log-in reward chest after 4:00 p.m. PDT [should say PST] on December 16.
Players last logged out before 4:00 p.m. PDT [should say PST] on December 15 will receive their first daily log-in reward chest immediately after the update.
I think this is very relevant for most of these reports. If each of you could please review and see if this describes your situation, it may let you know that this is the way distribution took place and does not represent a bug, per se.

When I started on the writing team a few years ago, my teammates suggested I try out Twitter because its 140 character format forces you to find ways to communicate things more succinctly.

Each team containing a player that contributed to killing another player gets a single point for that player’s death. This means if anyone dies to only NPCs no points are awarded to any teams. If multiple people from the same team contributed to killing a player only point is awarded to their team. If multiple teams contributed to killing the same player then each contributing team gets a point.

It’s simply because you lose points for DCing or character swapping.
The data makes no distinctions for the cause of a desertion, but yes this explains the discrepancy on the leaderboard. A future update will include desertions in the losses column.
It won’t affect your win rate unless you don’t return, just leech the points.
Coming back won’t matter. You are awarded dishonor and flagged as a deserter the moment you disconnect. You’ll still get end-game rewards if you come back though.
if this is correct why Ostricheggs has 14 games won 1 lost and he has 9 points?
lets asume for every win +1 makes 14 points. For 1 loss -3 is 11 not 9

One of our special Wintersday reindeer agents… ok, ok, Josh, one of our designers… let us know that there’s a fun new recipe in the Mystic Forge. In the past the Mystic Forge has produced some keenly-popular items, including the Endless Toymaker and Endless Gift Dolyak tonics. Now, you might be aware that a few of the items that were used in the old recipe no longer are available. So this year, in order to allow a few of these rare tonics to make it into the hands of lucky Wintersday celebrants, you will be able to combine mid-tier snowflakes (delicate, glittering, unique, and pristine) in a recipe that, while it usually will produce a gift box, may produce one of those valuable tonics, instead!

Don’t forget that Howler has no nighttime effects anymore and has been broken forever. Getting that fixed would be great.
Khani — do you have any idea when that started? I’d like to report, but if I had a tad more info, it’d be wonderful.
Can you describe the limitations on text displays in game? Does this limit the availability of lorebooks in game that include long chapters for those interested in such things? Is it more complex than simply making a string file? This has always bugged me. I know that with the dynamic event system, Anet has striven to go away from quests with walls of text; but Im curious why this simple solution isnt added in?
There currently isn’t UI implemented in the game to display something like a lore book. We have some places that we can display longer text strings, like those summaries in our recently-added Story Journal UI, but conversational text strings have to be kept within a certain length to account for things like German localization.
There’s not a lot that’s “simple” to implement in a game as complicated as an MMO like ours, unfortunately.
Lore books are something we’d like to see happen, but I can’t promise they are on the way soon or anything.
I would, but there is no “Area” / “Subarea” categories that fit, and it won’t let me send the bug report without selecting those.

Yes, they are no longer available in ranked arena. However, I didn’t make that change until an hour after the ladder started. -_-

Yes, this is a known issue and we’ll get it fixed as quickly as we can.
You always get at least 1 point for winning, and lose 1 point for a loss.
Sorry if someone already mentioned this. This is incorrect. You will always get at least 1 point for a win, but you will not always lose 1 point for a loss.
The full range for a win is +1 to +3. The full range for a loss is -3 to +2.
Alright, everyone! First off, THANK YOU for all of the added information on this issue; these are exactly the kinds of details we need to easily narrow and identify the root of an issue when it is reported. I’m happy to say that we’ve identified the problem and have our top men working on a fix.
While we do have a build on the way with some of the other issues identified with today’s release, the fix to this issue WILL NOT be ready and tested for this next build. If you are running fractals with the daily chest in mind, please recognize that you will not receive a daily chest until the fix has been implemented. If you are not working to progress your fractal level, farm relics, or test your might against Mai Trin, I would recommend taking the night off to check out other areas of the game – such as Wintersday or WvW (heed the summons to the Mist War!).

I find it so interesting to see how the new system is grading people’s skill.
These people are consistently winning matches that their team is expected to lose, I guess. Mostly they have wins.
None of the typical names appear in the top 10, unless I am missing someone well-known.
It looks like you cannot climb the leaderboard by crushing people you are expected to crush.
Maybe some of the top players would do better playing solo and carrying weaker teams.
Based on those scores, I wouldn’t say they were not expected to lose, merely that it was not in their favor.
Will be interesting to dig into the data and see how it’s playing out over time.
If this is an issue of their MMR not matching their skill, it should resolve itself after a while.
I keep getting into the games with 10+ min on timer and nothing going on, no mobs spawn etc. Am I actually supposed to wait 10 min until the new game starts?
That does sound like a bug. Have you clicked the gear emblem, then Support, and then “Report a Bug?” We’d love to get those details!

The programming team is investigating the crash now! In the meantime, the crash can be avoided if you do not hover your mouse cursor over the item link that appears after selecting and accepting the rune (see screenshot). This will let you utilize your sigil bags while avoiding the crash – at least until a proper fix can be implemented!
So, I just finished a ranked arena match (started ~ 5:00 pm EST) and it STARTED as 4v5. We did not have a 5th from the very beginning, and no one joined all game. I thought the new system was supposed to prevent these matches from starting? Why are we still starting with 4v5 matches??? Someone obviously didn’t click the queue to join, yet the match started anyway.
The match cannot start without a player confirming the match. There may be some race condition if the player leaves after accepting caused by not receiving the message about the player leaving until the match is already started. I’ll look into it and see if there is anything more I can do to prevent it.
I found an idempotence failure within the dishonor code.

I’m playing only solo ranked, since the leaderboard started, like 3 hours ago(?). All my games from today, are all solo ranked and all are since the leaderboard started. Haven’t played anything else. And I’m yet to be placed in a fun, fair and competitive match. Till now, all feel like playing low-level hotjoin…
Not sure what to tell you.
The lowest rank you played against with today was a rank 30. The majority have been 70-80. You haven’t had any roster size mismatch issues, and MMRs have all been in range for each match.
Bottom line: This was not a “choice.” This was not a decision made without thought, or carelessly, or in error. This was a necessary change that stabilized the game, for both PvP and Activities.
We understand that you would have preferred that this change not be made, but the cost of not making this change was too significant to let it slide. The change was necessary and as much as we regret any dissatisfaction that you may feel in relation to it, according to the designers it must remain in this state for this year’s release.
You only receive ~50 minutes of dishonor if you have 20 stacks of dishonor. That’s two abandons.
I’ll still take a look your account just in case.

In the future, all I need to know is which arena you were in, and what the time it was.
I just heard a bit more from the designer who informed me of this change. He said to be sure to let you know that this change was not implemented solely to stabilize PvP, but also to stabilize Activities. So it had a larger purpose than I at first understood, and I wanted to be sure to share that info.
Please include the error codes if you get them.
Thanks to everyone for sharing tips to complete this daily. I’m sure they were very helpful to Lillith and others who are attempting this objective.
I think perhaps you misunderstand. The code that is used for this event is code that also is used for PvP. The code that allowed party joins for Toypocalypse was changed — by necessity — in order to stablize PvP and Activities as a whole. This wasn’t a design decision, this was a necessary change.
I’m sure if you look at this objectively, it makes sense to set a short-time event for single enters in order to stabilize all of PvP, which is a permanent element of the game.
I’ll ask the designers if they have more insight, but what I was told indicates that “we had to do this change in the short term in order to make PvP and Activities more stable” which applies to the permanent game mode.
