"Connection error(s) detected. Retrying..."
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Ashley Segovia.8276
Hey everyone,
Everyone has been posting some great suggestions for this error. Unfortunately this is another one of those situations in which this error can be caused from a number of different things. If you’re one of the unlucky ones who may be seeing this error, please run through the following checklist:
1. Is your connection stable? Run a trace to the Guild Wars 2 servers to see if there is any packet loss found throughout your connection en route to the game servers as a stable connection can cause this error.
2. On that note, a supported connection method is also necessary and so if you’re on a mobile, satellite. or dial-up connection, you will also likely encounter this error. In order to play Guild Wars 2, you must have a broadband internet connection.
3. Is your router properly configured to connect to Guild Wars 2? The easiest way to rule out any issues with the router would be to bypass it completely and connect directly to your modem.
If you have a router/modem combo and so a bypass simply isn’t possible, you will want to ensure that TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600 are fully unrestricted and accessible, both inbound and outbound.
If you are connecting to Guild Wars 2 while on a campus, military, or business network, please check with your network’s administrator to verify that these ports are fully opened and unrestricted. If you are on a home Local Area Network (LAN), you will want to make sure that your network’s hardware is configured properly.
As someone else mentioned, you will also want to check your router’s security settings to ensure no router firewalls are blocking your connection to the client.
4. Ensure no security software or conflicting applications may be interfering with the client. The easiest way to rule out conflicting background applications is via MSCONFIG.
5. Be sure that you do not have any malware or spyware hanging around your system.
6. A Winsock reset is also a good way to go in troubleshooting this issue.
7. Lastly, a simple DNS flush, or even using Google’s Public DNS has been known to resolve this particular issue.
Should the above not help or should anyone have any additional questions or concerns, please do submit a support ticket and we’d be happy to be of further assistance!
The RNG acts very strangely with me and seems anything but random (Which I have reported to ANet couple times). Just can’t do it. I know people who have thrown in over 1000g worth of stuff to get nothing, while I know others who have gotten multiple pre drops with little effort from the forge.
This is the definition of “random.”
You might be referring to the clustering illusion. Wikipedia has a really cool gif:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clustering_illusion
John, you said the following:
- Almost everything (I’m speaking generically) is done for some reason or purpose, that purpose isn’t always very clear at first.
While we are aware that such things are in the nature of game development—that you can’t speak of until it’s ready, I think we can all agree, especially with the creation of Gaile’s new position, that ANET has had room to improve regarding communicating with their players. My two cents on this is: Gaile wants us to be nice. It would be nice to not be condescended upon. Quoting theories of economic logic doesn’t play well with most people, we few Plebeians here.
I have a question, and I’m almost certain it’s too specific to warrant any kind of substantive answer from you, but I thought I would try. Can you comment on, or at least give a defense of, why it is healthy to have the Amberite weapon’s fossils be non-tradeable? I spent around 20 hours of game-time farming geodes, opening chests, and to no avail. That experience was neither fun, nor rewarding, and I have not been back to Dry Top since. This is an area where the economic choices in your game, for me specifically, caused the game to cease to be fun or enjoyable. I highly enjoyed the weapons’ look; however, with the limited time I have to play games, I will and have chosen to take my time elsewhere. I don’t want to play a game in hopes to get “X,” only to never know when that will happen. And so, from point “A” (me with no Ambrite weapon) to point “B” (my sweet precious) has no guarantees of length of grind; thus, I choose to play another game instead.
Thanks for any consideration.
I apologize if that previous post comes off condescending it isn’t intended to. I often use very specific language and long descriptions because I’ve been told that it’s often people don’t understand the point I’m trying to make. In an attempt to fix that problem I’ve begun writing more elaborate descriptions, but it appears that has a slightly pedantic quality. One day I will find the correct middle ground.
For your question it is a bit specific, I’ll need to chat with some individuals before I know whether it’s acceptable to answer.
Generically, we often make items non-tradeable so that players must participate in the content to receive the rewards or so the reward is some indicator of your status of participation.
Hi kalaka,
What sort of system specs are you working with? Also, was the driver successfully updated? You said you were trying to update the driver and then the game crashed. Were you trying to update the driver while playing? You may want to consider a clean installation of your video card drivers first.
Like I said its the volatility of leaderboard decay for the vast majority while a small minority don’t see any.
Leaderboard decay works, put simply, by multiplying the player’s MMR by a configured percent by the power of how many hours they have been inactive (after the first). Since it works by percentage, and not a fixed amount, players at the top actually see a larger decay in terms of fixed amount.
LeaderboardRating = ActualRating * pow(DecayRate, HoursInactive)
This decay exists only on the leaderboard, and is not used for matchmaking. The decay will also be completely erased from the leaderboard the next time it updates after you play a game.

So, are you saying that you believe that even if the CE had not existed from the start of the game, rare items such as PCs and uber rare skins would still be approximately the same value as they are now? Do you think the negative affects (Negative from a player perspective) the wardrobe had on high end skins will recover back to “normal” prices? I think every time I get close to having enough money to buy a pre, something happens and it it goes way up again…3 times now it’s happened. I just can’t bring myself to play the mystic forge. I don’t have greatest luck in this game at the best of times and at what is it, about a 1:900 chance for a pre with four level 80 rares? The RNG acts very strangely with me and seems anything but random (Which I have reported to ANet couple times). Just can’t do it. I know people who have thrown in over 1000g worth of stuff to get nothing, while I know others who have gotten multiple pre drops with little effort from the forge. Personally, I think the pre supply needs to be increased to undo what the wardrobe has done. Demand was greatly increased on an already very limited supply.
The experience you’re describing would be exactly the same had the CE not existed since launch. Whether that experience SHOULD exist, is another topic entirely.
Totally agreed. It has the red * but it’s not noticeable enough.
It sure would be nice to get some interaction and commentary from a dev.

The answer is that a year ago or so there was a patch tha buffed the chest loot from dungeons. I remember because of that all were lfg in front of each one. And the drop was good. Exotic and rare items almost often. Obviously it was too much and got stealth nerfed as usual.
and don’t even get me started on fractal loot.there is only 2 answers why they did that.
1. to stop gold inflation
2. to promote more gem sales to convert to gold.I feel it was more to prohibit Gold Inflation.
But by limiting the stock too much, they’re causing massive price inflation on what’s already there. If they really wanted to control gold inflation they would kill the gem to gold conversion as a start. Another huge problem is the vendoring of items. Both create massive amounts of gold out of thin air and there simply are not enough gold sinks in the game (Or people have become bitter over those that do exist, such as the MF) as people sit on huge mounds of gold watching prices in the gem store inflate out of control as a result. Too much gold is already flowing in to the economy and not enough stock is flowing in to the TP to keep the prices down.
From a player perspective, one of the worst things that happened in this game is when they killed all the bots. The bots were bad for other reasons, hacked accounts and the such. But from a regular player perspective, bots kept prices down on the TP which was generally good for a majority of players. That said, the bots were putting so much in the TP that it was keeping prices down to a level that was casual friendly, but of course the hardcore burned through stuff like mad. Keep in mind, the game was advertized specifically to the casual player.
In the short, the economy is out of balance and there is no easy or good solution to fix it.
Rewards are definitely an issue that should be discussed, but I think you have a couple of incorrect assumptions above. The currency exchange and vendoring items are by no means huge economic issues. I also don’t believe that the economy is imbalanced in the manner you’re speaking of. I don’t want to derail this thread, so I encourage anyone who has any questions to post here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/I-have-a-question-about-the-economy/
it’s a stickied thread in the BLTC forums about economy questions. Or if you have something that doesn’t fit that thread’s theme, post it over in the BLTC forums.

I think it is the first time I see/read that a Dev (Jessica Boettinger) really talked about WvW with guilds and I would like to see how she reacted to some questions.
I still consider the “Adopt a Dev” initiative (as it happened) as a failed opportunity to identify the problems of WvW at their roots:
The vast majority (as I could read in the adopt sticky) spend their time in big guilds, in the gold leagues, where coverage is not an issue and where big numbers of players are. They rarely visited silver or bronze league, ran with PUGs, went to off-times e.g. EU night time (which is great for the Devs based in PST time zone).
The goal of the initiative was to get a good picture of the state of the game in its entirety. With the approach that is documented so far, they chose to see the “puffy clouds and butterflies” side of WvW and not the dark sides and problems we so often talked about here on the forums.
You’re making the false assumption that the participating developers took nothing away from their time with their adoptive guilds. This is untrue, many of our developers came back with feedback from interactions with their respective guilds, and in fact, we have a meeting today to discuss feedback, lessons learned and other relevant discussion around the program.
Don’t set yourself up to see changes immediately. The tournament just ended and the team still needs time to parse the feedback, identify issues and prioritize solutions. If you expect immediate change just because the tournament is over, you will be disappointed. Change takes time and careful consideration.

Aidan is right, that’s phishy.
I think everyone will find this thread about phishing e-mails very helpful in identifying genuine e-mails versus phishing attempts. Please give that thread a look if you find you’ve gotten an e-mail, and of course, for your security you should look at all e-mails with a careful eye.
As far as warnings: There have been a few rare instances when a GM will reach out to a player. It’s very uncommon, but it can happen. In cases of an e-mail contact, we will never present you with a live link that would involve your logging in, nor would we ask you for any identifying information within the e-mail. As far as in-game warnings, you can find some info on that here. But please note that we do not send personal e-mails or give in-game warnings in 99.9999% of the cases of real or potential infractions. CS relies on the normal warnings given through the system itself in the vast majority of cases.

Aenaos.8160: we’ll address your email authentication problems in your ticket, but I wanted to ask if you’ve looked at the info here on how to set up the mobile auth, specifically this part:
“If you get an error message after step 4, please check to make sure the time and date on your computer and mobile device are accurate, and try again. If you have any other problems setting up the mobile authenticator, please file a ticket and our Support team will get back to you as soon as possible to help.”
If your time and date are correct and match, and the site will still not accept your mobile auth code, please mention it in your ticket so we can figure out what the problem is. Thanks!
The leaderboards are currently ranked by your Glicko2 matchmaking rating (MMR) which is hidden.
How much your ranking changes depends on a few things.
- Your current MMR deviation. Glicko2 tries to factor in how well it knows you. If it doesn’t know you, it will adjust your MMR more to try and find the best placement for you.
- The MMR of the team you last fought against. A win against a higher MMR team will raise you faster, while a loss against a lower MMR team will lower you faster.
- Decay. The leaderboard itself has a decay mechanism that will lower your ranking after periods of inactivity. However, since we don’t want to destroy your MMR because its valuable for matchmaking, this decay is only on the leaderboard itself, so when someone plays a match after a long-ish period of inactivity they will jump around faster.
- How much the other players around you are moving. The people near you are probably very close to you in MMR, so any small changes can mean a relatively big jump.
How does matchmaking work?
Right now the algorithm is incredibly simple. (Read: not intelligent)
- For solo arena we find 10 players near the same MMR and then shuffle those players into teams to make the teams as even as possible (MMR-wise).
- For team arena we find 5 players near the same MMR, no shuffling. We then find another team near the same MMR and put them together.
- The range of players you get paired with grows over time as you’re waiting to increase chances of finding a match. Which can lead to playing with people outside your skill range (usually lower).
- It doesn’t factor in PvP rank, profession, leaderboard rank, or anything else. It’s all about the MMR.

Can Queen Jenna defend herself?
Hi, guys! This is an interesting question. Queen Jenna can defend herself, but because she is an extremely valuable individual, her defenders prefer not to take the risk. Thus, she is rushed away from danger immediately, as are most presidents of modern countries.
Sometimes, if the potential for danger is strong enough, she’s been known to use an illusion to represent herself, as at the Queen’s Jubilee.
Sorry! That was truly me.
Forgot the red splash.

Any chance for a response on my question? I think you may have missed it.
I apologize, I can’t currently speak on that.
Anet’s famous response for everything!!!
This is a 14 page thread of me answering all I can; throw me a bone sometimes.
Seriously, guys, John’s an amazing forum contributor. Play nicely — we want him to keep up the good info as he’s able to give it!
He’s an amazing contributor, probably the best dev contributor on these forums, but it was a pretty good question from Sariel and well presented. For those of us interested in crafting it’s an issue.
At lot of the game developments recently just don’t make any sense. A good example is the krait collection reward, a recipe that no one in their right mind would ever make because it’s not worth to use t6 mats to get an extra 15 minutes of food effect. There are a lot of examples.
I can appreciate that everyone’s favorite economist can’t answer, and he’s probably not responsible for the decisions being made. So is there perhaps someone else Gaile who you could forward the question to?
Be careful saying things don’t make any sense, it’s very rare that’s true. Almost everything (I’m speaking generically) is done for some reason or purpose, that purpose isn’t always very clear at first.
For example, what if we did something like release candy corn before our first Halloween event. Nobody’s ever seen Halloween so candy corn is just some weird item that makes you throw up when you eat too much (very similar to real life). The developers know that Halloween is coming though and they wanted to start filling the world with this currency so people can get started on their rewards right away instead of taking a couple of days to earn enough to start, but want to have a price schema that works over multiple years of releases. Next year there will be candy corn in the world, but this year there isn’t so there’s conflict.
Please note this is a hypothetical situation I just made up off the top of my head and has no basis in any kind of reality. I’m just trying to demonstrate that sometimes there are good reasons for actions that aren’t immediately clear. This doesn’t mean you should stop questioning actions, you shouldn’t, not here, not anywhere. It just means that you should continually reevaluate your beliefs as time goes by and you learn more and more, this is one of the reasons that I come here to tell you what I can about our thought process and our decision making.
P.S. There’s a cognitive bias that makes us bad at doing this called Bayesian Conservatism that we have to fight against.
Only the fields marked with a red * are required. You may be missing the “Specific Issue” field, or you may be using a browser that’s having trouble displaying the form correctly. Here’s a screenshot to help you out (this is what it looks like in Firefox).

The passion in these posts is very real, I just wish everyone was able to see that it’s an expression of passion and not one of hate as they might first appear
Oh no worries! I know that. We know that. It would be awful to have a player base that was indifferent. Instead, it’s awesome that we have players who feel passion for the game, for more content, for changes, the whole lot.
Some posts are heated. Some are rude. And a few are garbage.
But in the end, everyone who is asking for more information cares, and cares deeply, and that’s something we respect and something we’re making directed changes to address.

I see your point about bach. I just hope new people who pick up an instrument from the gemstore don’t just think it is alright to macro any song since I’m sure it is the same thing as using a bot.
Honestly, I’m not sure, but I’m going to ask Customer Support about it. The fact is, we have a policy against automating gameplay through the use of macros or bots. But music? I just don’t know if the rules about third-party programs extend to non-game-related situations.

Hey Melvin. I think I understand the frustration. You’ve acquired the instruments and you’ve become proficient in their use, and it’s obviously something you care about. But, I wager your music is different (and probably way better
) than the macro’d stuff, right? So I’d just keep doing what you do and I wouldn’t let what others are doing interfere with your enjoyment of making music!
Put another way: If there had been CD players back in Bach’s day, so you think he would have stopped composing or playing because someone was playing canned music outside Thomaskirche Leipzig? I rather think not.

Anet (Gaile)—anyway to get Amazon(world wide) to get these at real retail value and review their 3rd party seller rip offs?
Can Anet provide stock to Amazon in numbers to meet demand? Or is Amazon refusing to carry the cards because they don’t sell or little demand?
There was a period of reexamination on the part of… someone. I don’t know if it was them, or us. But the decision was made to order up, which Amazon did, and provably that purchase was a resounding success because from what I’m seeing here, they sold out again and needed to order more. (Which I think they’re doing now.)
The Sales Director told me they’re looking at other options. But I can tell you, as a consumer (as we all are) your voice is powerful. If you want a retailer or an online seller to stock cards, drop them a quick e-mail. If you feel the price a third-party (non-authorized reseller) is charging is out of line, decline to buy from them and tell Amazon (or whomever) that you want them to carry the cards. (We have no influence on the independent sellers on Amazon, sorry.)
I’ve gotten in the habit of asking my local grocery store to carry a certain frozen entree. At first, they ordered it for me. Then they started carrying it. The same can be true if you let your favorite store or online seller know “If you carry this, I will buy it.” For to a seller, there is seldom a more persuasive statement.

But you know we have said, officially, that SAB will return in the future, right? I don’t know that everyone understood that, but yes, it’ll be back. Some of you pointed to the Season 2 image and said it wasn’t enough to excite you about the season. Some said we should use “teasers.” But isn’t that image precisely that? A teaser?
Ok, let’s talk about this on a personal level. Share your thoughts or desires, not what you gauge to be the thoughts or wishes of the whole community.
I’ll start:
I love books. But I never read the slipcover or the back of the book. Why? Because usually it says too bloomin’ much! I don’t want to read something like, “Ingrid takes a vacation in Crete and meets a mysterious stranger who isn’t all he seems to be, which she discovers when checking the lining of his suitcase and finding four passports in four different names all containing (insert imagined gasp here) her new lover’s photograph! What will Ingrid do? What will she do?”
Well, I’d have to read 100 pages to catch up with the whole “phony passport” thing, but during those 100 pages, I’m thinking, “So when is she finding out that Pierre is a scoundrel?” And everything is colored by what I know, and the whole story-telling experience is diminished.
Oh, and I don’t even want to go into the whole “I saw a trailer at a movie, and every good joke and/or pivotal scene in the movie was telegraphed in the trailer.” That’s not good teaser-ing — that’s giving away the store!
A teaser has to be carefully devised — for a book, a movie, a game. I find the portal and the date to be enticing. Others here do as well. It’s ok — your mileage may vary. But I don’t think we (as devs) want to go the way of TMI for upcoming content because that takes away the joy of discovery and the sense of wonder that everyone will experience as they play the new episode.
Again, just a personal opinion, but as you can see, something I have thought about quite a bit!

Also Gaile, can we please get the forum’s Search function fixed? It’s been broken for nearly 2 years. I know there’s been heaps of topics on this, but the sad irony is that they get lost in the forums and never acted upon.
Thanks for communicating.
I’m not discounting your other comments, and thanks for them. But I have to quote that bit ^ and respond: Yes, Yes, and Yes again! By all that Dwayna holds holy, I truly wish we could get a functional search engine!
It’s no secret that the forum software has some noticeable issues. We don’t have the ability to fix Search, just as we cannot address a few other things we’d like to tackle. I’m really sorry that it can be difficult to efficiently use the forum. Quite honestly, I’m absolutely delighted when I see someone was able to find links to old threads and provide them in current thread.
