I’ll see if we know why it would appear to get stuck and take so long to send. There may be a lot of data being transmitted to help the devs identify the issues and get started on a fix. However, I’ll see what I can learn about this.

Thanks for letting us know.

How on earth did this baseless nonsense get a red post?

If you read the post, it wasn’t laudatory of the OP, it was cautionary about bad manners.

And to be honest, yes, sometimes…

Because, sadly, people on these forums are so angry and rude that the developers have to spend more time patrolling the hallways and putting out flame wars than reading good, constructive discussions.

Which all goes to the point that if everyone exercises better forum habits, then more meaningful interaction is possible.

I think the reason that the Grenth hood has appeared closer to Wintersday is because of the traditional Wintersday battle between Grenth and Dwayna back 250 years ago in Tyria. I used to attend in Lion’s Arch, back in the pre-rubble, pre-flooding days. ~sniff~

Anyway, the whole thing was a lot of fun and the hood is no doubt an homage to that tradition. And yes, items do sometimes reappear and I bet this one will come around again so just keep your eyes on the store.

I read it as “experienced.” As in “Only experienced players need to apply.” I like some of the definitions here that set actual stats, though, like Miku’s. And I agree with Rasimir that the term can be somewhat subjective. (I admit it, a few other “definitions” made me smile. )

I’ve not read this whole thread so forgive me if this is answered elsewhere. I want to ask a few questions.

1. Is the loot system currently set up so people who play less are more likely to get an awesome RNG drop? There have been numerous posts like, “my friend logged on after 5 months and got X, Y, Z drop while I’ve been playing every day and got nothing!” I want to know if the way it works currently is that those who play lots get decreasing loot in proportion to playtime. Why would ANET do this? To keep people chasing the carrot.

John answered that question in a different thread, there arent any account modifiers.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/I-have-a-question-about-the-economy/page/15#post4487484

what he is speaking of wouldnt be an account modifier, and it probably does exist, mildy. There is Diminishing returns on drops and it decays pretty slowly. You will in fact see more drops in your first few hours after not having played for awhile.

They will never tell us exactly what is happening, but your friend who plays rarely will basically have no DR for almost all of their playtime.

Still catching up, but I wanted to stop to be clear. No to this. This doesn’t happen, it’s a cognitive bias. There’s virtually no DR active on any given day.

I think this is awesome, but makes me very sad. It’s a prime example of how the community is losing people who make it worth playing.

raethe — I understand what you’re saying, but I read Sanderinoa’s original post as saying that the guild is taking a time-out, not making a departure. We know that guilds sometimes do that, and it’s perfectly fine. (In fact, it’s one of the beauties of Guild Wars 2 that you don’t have that monthly fee nagging you that “I must play to get my money’s worth!” )

I feel sure that Sanderinoa and the guild will be back in the future, and we’ll be very happy when that happens!

It was great fun having you join us on Theme Night, at least I think you did form the convos going on on our TS last week…lol!
Tonight looks like we are going to do a “Thief Night”, so if you have time, come join us again!

I was there for Ranger night and Mesmer night! T’was much fun (though my ranger had a grand total of three skills by then end of the night).

Thief is the only class I haven’t played much of~ I’ll definitely try to make it tonight! May be late, though; now that the tournament is over the boyfriend and I are going back to our evening workouts

This a problem caused by having a playback device configured for surround sound at the device driver level when your hardware device is only stereo. What happens in this scenario is that audio is being directed toward a ‘center’ speaker that doesn’t physically exist and so you lose the sounds that happen directly on your character or right in front of them.

Configuring your device drivers to output 2.1 stereo should solve the problem.

Hi, manimsmart. So, as it turns out, that piece is not included in the soundtrack compilation sold by Direct Song. That’s something we have no control over, unfortunately.

It’s part of a small collection of music that we categorized as “cinematic”. The idea was that, during the limited cinematics where characters talk with each other (like in the video you linked), there would be a selection of pieces that designers could choose to loop beneath the dialogue in order to set the mood. Not every designer took advantage of them, and since we no longer do limited cinematics in any of the content post-launch, they don’t get heard much.

I’m not sure what our options are as far as posting that stuff on Soundcloud, but I will look into it. Please understand that I make no guarantees that we’ll be able to release it.

Ayakaru — I don’t know what to tell you about this. I use the forums a lot, and occasionally I get sent to a screen that tells me that all my wonderful prose, over which I labored for at least three minutes, so gone. Therefore I must start again. ~hand on forehead~

Seriously, because the forum sometimes acts up, I’ve taken to — when I remember to do it — copying and saving the post in my clipboard so I can just slap it back into the thread. When you do this with a post that is previously inclusive of a quote, you’re essentially putting a fresh reply instead of a quote-containing reply, and I think the tech is different. Anyway, I find that this lessens the chance of the post going away.

Can you give this a try a few times and see if it makes the process smoother for you?

(Noob): Is crafting worth it?

in Crafting

As you can see, there are several opinions on this one. Lots of people love crafting, and they enjoy the satisfaction of making something through their own efforts (and talent). Others point out that sometimes, on an economic level, you might be ahead to just buy the items you want instead of gathering ingredients and components.

I suspect that if you’re a “completionist” type of player, you might like doing the former, might enjoy “the thrill of the hunt” and that “I made this!” feeling. But there’s a time consideration that may lead you to complete other things instead.

In the end, I’d suggest you give the Guild Wars 2 Wiki a read, because there are some nice information and discussion pages on the subject that could help you reach the right decision for you.

But I have to quote:

Craft for the fun of it, too.

So true.

And that’s probably exactly why they’ve stopped talking about anything that’s not almost ready to be deployed, because anything they say that they are working on or intend on implementing with generate type and players will care about it a lot and they’ll get angry if it never happens or doesn’t happen for a long time.

Yes, that’s definitely true. As Mike O’Brien said in a recent post, “We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: we don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. Creating fun is an uncertain business: sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t; sometimes we go back to the drawing board over and over before we get something right. If we make optimistic promises and then can’t deliver on them, everyone suffers. So when we attend a trade show or give an interview, we’re there to talk about what we’re getting ready to ship, not to speculate on what we might ship someday.”

We truly understand the interest that our loyal players have in knowing more, but we’re not able to share too much at this juncture for the reasons that are stated above and outlined in more detail in Mike’s post.

Rest assured — and my daily e-mails confirm this — the devs are reading the forums daily to keep abreast of your input on a wide variety of game elements, in addition to which they’re analyzing, prioritizing, weighing whether to and how to address areas of concern, considering how to implement positive changes, and much more, based on the input you give us on the forums.

As Mike also said in his post, much value has come through the CDI’s. I just prowled the hallways to see if I could find out more about the timeline for the current and future CDI. Alas, Chris Whiteside is in a meeting, but I know he’s committed to the format so I hope you’ll be involved in those and if there are some dates he or I can provide one of us will do that later.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: John Smith.4610

Previous

John Smith.4610

Next

I’m pretty sure that nobody think there is special code about that.

But we’re a lot to rather think that RNG is bugged in some way, and that’s why, in addition to a “gauss distribution” as described in the previous post, some players are always lucky and some are always unlucky. As the RNG mechanism is all in all quite complex (modified by magic find ; depends on damage done by the player / by his group compared to damage done by other players ; special items with a different table loot ; …), there could be several bugs introduced in the system. Remember that the % of magic find displayed in the hero panel is wrong since months (but the real number is supposed to be correctly applyed), so it wouldn’t be surprising that there are some bugs in the loot mechanism itself.

There are CERTAINLY very vocal players that are convinced of the “secret LUCK stat”.

its not really relevant weather there is a secret luck stat or not. If a random works properly, there will be people who will, will seem lucky, or those who seem unlucky, when compared to the data. This is the normal expectation of the bell curve.

So whether it is a bug or not doesnt matter. The point is these people are bound to exist.

My take on RNG, isn’t that it exist or it’s broken, it’s just that it’s practically everywhere. Neither of those solutions would work anyway, since the game would have to predict what you’re after in the first place, then reward you for failure of what exactly? Do we put a merchant in the game that carries everything a player might want in exchange for a loser token?

This was the first problem I thought of as well. It’s simple to say failure and success, but that’s not an easily definable concept in real life.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: John Smith.4610

John Smith.4610

Next

This is a spinoff of the economy thread to talk about RNG tactics in games in a general form.
Here’s the premise. RNG is evenly distributed on aggregate. On an individual level this means that while almost everyone falls into a reasonable range in the middle, there are outliers on each side of the distribution that are either highly rewarded or not rewarded at all. These individuals become sample cases and spotlights for experiences that maybe shouldn’t exist.

We do need to be very careful about ideas that flatten the experience entirely as that quickly becomes not fun at all.

There are two concepts that have been discussed in the other thread that I’ll briefly summarize.

1. Use a specifically non-random NG. The NRNG functions similarly to a RNG, but has characteristics that either squish the distribution so that outliers exist much less or specifically manipulate a player’s experience for loot in a more complicated way that makes it feel rewarding.

2. Implement measures that counteract low-end outlier behavior inside of game design. This would be a system that is something like: If player hasn’t received a rare drop in X time send them Y tickets for random drops.

2.5: “Add secondary reward mechanisms (ie. token based system) alongside the primary RNG system; allow progress to be made even when you don’t get the result you want.”

Obviously these are hyper-simplified descriptions, but I don’t want this to get too long.

I also want to point out that we shouldn’t be using language like ‘This is a terrible idea’. I think we have got to the point now where we can prove or disprove ideas on based on their merits and discussion. The reason we shouldn’t use language like this is because the more members we have and the more ideas we have the more problems we are likely to solve and the more opportunities we are likely to find.

P.S: Sorry I wasn’t on over the weekend, I just wasn’t able to get on.

Wait a second. The/A Producer for Anet hadn’t played WvW prior to that? Yikes…

There are many producers here! I am quite new to the company, and I do not produce for a team that is related to WvW in almost any way; trust me, if I were I would have played WvW prior to my starting here

how would you explain this?

Worst case scenerio, assuming this is all solo players queued for team arena, this likely because team arena does not shuffle teams to make them even and you were put into best fitting team available at the time the team was formed.

Best case, this spread is caused more by the self selection of players forming their own rosters to play together.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.

However, there is a known (to us) flaw with team arena matchmaking. It will never try to reform a team (to try to find a better fit) once its been created. So you are stuck with the best team it could do at the time, and have to wait until it finds another team within range comes along. This is also why team arena queues can sometimes take longer, or why even a bad match can pop quickly.

But if it’s based on MMR i would assume that the MMR of a #3 player would be way way higher than a 97% player.

That is an incorrect assumption. The MMR spread between a rank 3 and 97% can actually be very small. Your leaderboard rank (for the top players) is your position in a sorted list, and does not represent the distance between players other than to say one is lower than the other.

There isn’t such thing is some accounts getting stuck lucky. Yes there’s an RNG, yes it’s random and there are streaks and outliers and an even aggregate distribution.

Can you confirm whether it is an RNG that uses some sort of value from the user’s account or whether it is purely random/session based? I have a friend who swears that smack-talking an anet dev during a beta weekend pvp match doomed his account to poor rng for life.

Absolutely it does not use anything to do with a user.

Hey guys!

I wasn’t able to make an introduction post due to not having a proper shiny account, but I’d like to thank Hordes of Denravi of HoD for the great time I’ve had! I hadn’t played WvW prior to this and it was a super cool experience to run with the guild, learn the ropes, and get their amazing feedback on the game! It’s been a grand time and I look forward to my continued WvW playing.
