Due to the recent aurageddon (and the horsemen of the wingpocalypse preceding it), I’m now firmly in favor of a detailed set of options (preferably checkboxes) that would allow me to tweak my visual experience.

I’d absolutely love to have the ability to disable backpacks and character auras on other players and at the same time bring back skill visuals and auras.

PvP vs PvE

Why in the world would you ever use Basilisk Venom as your elite skill in PvE instead of something like Dagger Storm or Thieves Guild?

Breakbars are a thing in some fights. If every thief in Vinetooth Prime zergs slotted BV and knew when to use it, the world would be a better place.

Renegade: 1/10. Kala who? I kept wondering if she was so worth of a legend, then why didn’t I hear about her before? Would not have been my choice lore wise.

That’s curious because, speaking as someone who didn’t even touch GW1, she’s one of the Rev legends I know (along with Glint and Ventari). Still no idea who Mallyx, Shiro or Jalis are.

Tbh you could have probably traded gems for gold and would have had enough for the skins you want.

Words of wisdom right there. Do the math, see how your drops from chests stack up against buying the item outright, and see what works best for you. Chances are, unless you particularly enjoy gambling, you’d be better off buying gems, converting them to gold and buying the skins.

Purely on the scale of me being excited about them:

Deadeye: 5. I theorycrafted a rifle build that was almost perfect in my head. Come stress test day, I just couldn’t make it work against lots of mobs which is essential for overland PvE. I’m not giving up on it yet, but I’ll have to adjust my playstyle a lot.

Holosmith: 3. My main is engi, but I don’t have any interest in this one. None whatsoever.

Scourge: 6. Another toon I made during stress test. It’s fun, but I’m bad at AoE targeting (especially since I mainly use the mouse to click on the skill bar, which makes ALL AoE into PBAoE, and that’s not exactly what Scourge is about).

Spellbreaker: 7. Third toon I tried out, and it’s the one I liked the most. It sorely needs a damage boost and cleave on at least one of dagger 2-3-4, but I found it fun leaping around on an asura and full-countering things.

Soulbeast: 4. I don’t really play Ranger much. I’m currently leveling one (albeit lazily) but I don’t feel like giving up any of my trait lines for the elite at this point.

Weaver: 1. This spec is basically more piano-playing for the most piano-playing class in the game already. I wouldn’t play it if you paid me… eh, actually I probably would if you paid me. Accepting offers!

Mirage: 5. I don’t play my mesmer alt much, but I kinda vaguely want to try this one. It’ll depend on the state it’s in come launch day.

Renegade: 2. I don’t really care about Revenant in general tbh. Very unlikely to play it much.

Firebrand: 4. Eh… all the cones kinda kill it for me, if I’m honest. That doesn’t synergize with anything. Axe should have been a 400-600 range cone weapon like FT if they really wanted to make the cone thing work.

You’ll get a response of “WvWers have to do PvE a lot to make legendaries” in 3… 2… 1… Heck, you’ll probably get it while I’m typing this. And they do have a point tbh.

The good thing is, you don’t really have to do that much to finish a reward track. I just basically did some of the easy dailies and got the rest by escorting dolyaks from one place to another for what seemed like an eternity (probably around 6 hours in total). Terribly boring and at no point did it serve the purpose of making me interested in WvW, but it really wasn’t that bad. I only got attacked once or twice, just let them kill me and moved on. Item repair is free. /shrugs

EDIT: Oh yeah, I got yelled at for not fighting back once by someone who cared way too much about winning whatever our glorious server has been fighting for. I just blocked them.

I might reconsider Spellbreaker

in Warrior

Posted by: Ariurotl.3718

Ariurotl.3718

My main is an Asuran Warrior and he has always had my favourite animations. Flipping around with 100 Blades feels so satisfying when compared to just slashing a bunch of times with other races.

To each his own, I guess. I never really liked these “hanging-in-the-air” animations on Asura. They do have the best animations in the game, but these particular ones irked me. D/D Asura spellbreaker looked just perfect though.

My issue (as another PvE scrub) is that dagger spellbreaker doesn’t really have enough cleave/AoE. Full Counter is nice, dagger 5 is nifty (for reflection more than anything) but that’s about it. 2-3-4 on dagger are all single-target, so is the burst, and slotting that AoE boon-stripping meditation in overland PvE is a waste most of the time.

Why are titles so divorced from lore?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ariurotl.3718

We also don’t get the title “Champion of Orr” (or whatever that was) that the old Orrian king bestowed upon us at the end of the Personal Story… That’s one of my biggest complaints.

Yes, that too. Ideally, you’d get the Order titles in the original PS as well, but the collection I listed as an example simply makes it easier to implement.

It’s genuinely baffling to me, it’s like whoever makes the titles is ashamed of the game’s lore.

Why are titles so divorced from lore?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ariurotl.3718

Ariurotl.3718

I can’t be the only one to have noticed this, but titles in the game are painfully generic most of the time to the point of actually avoiding referencing any GW2 lore. I think you can find more references to GW1 in them, and that just seems insane to me.

Here’s one of the more recent examples of lost opportunity: the HoT pact backpacks. You get two-tiered collections for Priory, Vigil and Whispers packs, then if you complete all three, you get another achievement and the title: The Great Reformer. Okay, and that references what, exactly? Did the Pact actually disband after the failure that was the initial Mordy assault, and did the Commander bring them back together? Thanks to some references in LS3, we know for a fact that it’s not true. And what exactly is the point of this title outside of the Pact context? Does it just sound good or something? I can’t imagine many RP situations calling for someone to be referred to as The Great Reformer. The title is meaningless.
What they should have done (in my opinion) is make all the top tier collections award the corresponding titles: Warmaster, Magister and Lightbringer. What are the downsides of those? There are multiples of people of those ranks in each of the orders, so it wouldn’t be THE thing to break immersion, especially not with so many other, much more immersion-breaking things in the game. Heck, make the lesser collections award lesser titles as well. I know “Agent” would be popular with a lot of people. It’s not like there’s a dearth of titles in the game at this point as well, so I can’t see any perceived prestige being a huge factor.

So why are the people responsible for titles shy away from the game’s own lore? I know the story is not exactly Shakespeare but when it comes to titles, it is avoided like a plague.

I’m confused. What makes you think you need to send a character to the desert to learn an Elite Specialization? As noted above, the NPCs only offer(ed in the demo) lore; no ‘quests’. I don’t think it will be any different than it was in Heart of Thorns. I certainly ‘learned’ Elite Specializations on characters that never set foot in HoT.

Wait, so those NPCs were not in the desert? Or weren’t required to learn the spec? I am confused as well, haha. Sorry.

Basically all I want is to be able to start training Deadeye with extra hero points I get from Central Tyria and HoT, without going to the desert on that character first.

New specs will require unlocking with special missions from what we heard already. NPCs are actually teaching you how to become new profession.

So what I think this means is that in order for my newly made thief to become Deadeye without jumping ahead in the story, it will only have to do PS, LS2, HoT, LS3 and ONLY THEN go to PoF and unlock the bloody spec? Screw that so much.

I don’t like the sound of that, I really don’t. Hopefully it’s at least account-wide.

It’s nothing like that. If the Demo is any indication, there will be no ‘missions’ offered from NPCs. Those NPCs offered only lore dialogue. No ‘quests’ or ‘missions’ were present.

The fact that you have to do something to unlock them is not the issue here. It is just immersion-breaking for me to randomly send a char on a spec-learning trip to the desert. But yeah yeah, it’s not really important. I’m just nitpicking at this point.

Yeah, selectively turning off the backpacks on other players is a feature I never knew I wanted before they introduced the black/white wings and suddenly everyone and their fashion-challenged grandma was wearing the useless tacky things. I’m very much in favor of adding such an option specifically for backpacks. AoE targeting and half-measures

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ariurotl.3718

The OP seems to be arguing that the game should have been designed to use the mouse alone, without a keyboard. I can’t agree.

I’m just asking for the option, and more importantly, for the consistency. I don’t see how anyone can be opposed to the option of right-clicking on a skill and choosing how you want it to be deployed.

And yes, in my ideal world all AoE skills automatically snap to target and affect the area around said target. But I’m not asking for it to be mandatory for everyone. I’m asking for consistency and the freedom of choice. The fact that having to track the cursor is mandatory if you have “snap to target” enabled is farcical.

The latest map, Siren’s Landing, is a great mix: there’s one waypoint and, for a nominal amount of local currency, you can ‘buy’ no-cost/in-map access to 4 more. I don’t feel it’s hard to return to an event at all.

For what it’s worth, I get that the “shrinepoints” are free once you unlock them, but this mechanic annoyed the crap out of me because it was just another thing tacked on to complicate things. I’d rather pay the silver for the usual waypoints.

AoE targeting and half-measures

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ariurotl.3718

Ariurotl.3718

Yes, this dead horse again.

I’ll admit, there has been a lot of positive change in AoE targeting for us slow-reaction people in GW2. The “snap to target” feature was introduced, and it (half-)saved AoE skills for us. But it’s not enough, not when the glaring problem is still apparent. What’s the problem, you ask? Well…

Snap to target only works when you use keyboard keys

Let me explain that further. Some of us use the mouse to click on skills. And what happens is, if you click on an AoE skill using the mouse, it will center on you. All the time, every time. In order to get AoE to snap to target, you HAVE to use the keyboard keys, and you HAVE TO make sure your cursor isn’t floating over the skillbar because if that’s the case, enjoy your AoE centering on your char.

I know the code is old, the engine is old and what have you. But it would have been SO GREAT if the right-click on a skill on the skillbar changed how it works. Just please please PLEASE let me snap to target by clicking on the skillbar.

Is it really that hard? Why do I have to even take the AoE aspect into consideration when I decide how much FUN I’m likely to have with a given weapon? Nobody should, and yet I do. I look at the Renegade shortbow and I think, well I’m not gonna have fun with that because of all the cursor-watching I’m gonna have to do if I pick it. THIS IS NOT HOW IT SHOULD WORK.

In conclusion, thank you for the half-measures that made using AoE skills less of a hassle that they were before Snap to Target. Now it’s the perfect time for fixing the problem once and for all. Just let us right-click on an AoE skill and choose how it targets. It won’t hamper skillful players at all, they can just keep it as is. But us slowpokes would really appreciate not having to track the cursor all the time because GOD FORBID IT’S HOVERING OVER THE SKILLBAR.

Rant over, peace.
