Dear lord, aren’t the pets bad enough? Do you really want to drag along a companion too? Why? Besides, if it’s the strength you’re worried about, there are better, more fun ways. Combat mounts would be one option. Power armor is another. Personally, I’d go with some power armor. That’d be cool. Maybe as a mastery for the next expansion or mastery add-on? That way it will only work in the new areas (and new PvP zones), and yet, the zones won’t be built around having one of those power armors. They makes things a bit easier, but aren’t all-powerful, either. Heck, maybe let them run on steam, so we have them for a limited time and a decent cooldown?

2 days ago ISIS killed 42 people in Lebanon, anyone heard about it? I bet no, how bout we make GW items out of that?

Not that making French/Lebanon stuff in game would be of any support to anyone, its as much help as the facebook french flag profile pic cover.

Anyone remember a few years ago when a girl was kidnapped, and the media made a huge deal out of it? I don’t even remember the girls name, but nevermind that. When all this was going on, I made a post a forum asking why the case got so much attention. The result was page after page after page of people calling me a cold-hearted (censored) and much worse things. And yet, my entire point was that there were loads of children being kidnapped all over the world on a daily basis, so why was this one getting so much attention? Not one person could, or even tried, to answer that.

Then there was the Chinese workers getting stuck in a mine after an accident. It got tons of media attention, and “everyone” wanted to support them and help them. The fact this happens at least on a yearly basis around the world was ignored.

So to make this short, I feel bad for the victims in Paris, but I don’t intend to make a big deal out of it. It happened. It sucked, but it’s over. We can’t change it, and we can’t prevent the next one. All we can do is shrug and go on with our lives. Heck, anyone remember Utøya in Norway back in 2011? More than 90 was killed, most of them children from 13 to 18 years old. That was four years ago in my own home country, and yet I don’t care. It’s ancient history already. The Paris stuff might seem like a huge deal now, but give it a month, and very few still care. Or even remember it.

A third-party solution works, but it’s too much trouble for me. It never really works all that well. I can play GW2 with the Oculus Rift if I wanted to, but because GW2 doesn’t support it natively, the result is a bit hit and miss. (even if we ignore the fact GW2 doesn’t have a decent first-person mode.) A native support for gamepads would be much appreciated.

Been a while since I even tested this, but can you play GW2 with a gamepad? I prefer sitting back and enjoying GW2 with some music on, nad just taking my time. My computer is connected to a 40" TV, and I got a sofa right here, so it would be awesome if I could just lay down with a gamepad and play GW2 all day.

my wishlist for guild war 3

BattleCat.2098

My couple of wishes for Guild Wars 3:

1. Build on what made GW2 so darn good. I was never a fan of GW1, but GW2 is one my all-time favorite MMORPGs. GW3 doesn’t need to reinvent the series the way GW2 did, but more improve on everything from GW2. The temporary grouping, the big, open worlds, the professions (lots more skills would be fun), more weapon types, you name it. Basically make a GW2 all over again with new races and improved features.

2. Make it multiplatform. Yes, I know this can be quite controversial, but look at Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV and DC Universe Online. MMORPGs on consoles can work quite well. It doesn’t mean downgrading the PC version in any way, of course. It just means more people get to enjoy them, and that’s never a bad thing. (oh, sure ESO was crap, but the other two are pretty good.)

3. Work with the community from pre-Day 1 of development. Seriously, we all love GW2, and a lot of people here loved GW1. Why ignore us? I’m not saying you should listen exclusivly to the forums and community, but getting the community involved even in the planning would be a really good idea. Don’t be one of those companies who first make the game 90% done, then throw out a beta to see if we enjoy it. Rather be one of those companies who decide to make a sequel, then start by asking us fans what we want, and why we want it. Then simply take all the best, most popular and most interesting ideas and focus on them.

4. More unique races, please. I’m not a big fan of playing a charr myself, but I do love seeing them around. But human, nord and sylvari? We have five races, and three of them are human? (well, human-ish.) I would prefer only four races, with charr, asura, human and a very-not-human fourth race. Make each race unique. Right now I can’t really be bothered picking between human or nord, as they are the same race. Even sylvari are just humans with a weird haircut.

Thanks, guys Please don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I absolutely hate people, or anything. In fact, that’s one thing I really love about GW2. It’s easy to join in on group-events without being in a group. If there’s an event nearby, I frequently join in. What I don’t like is being stuck in a group and “forced” to tag along with everyone else. That just makes me feel like part of a train, going from one place to the next, killing everything in sight and never taking our time to enjoy the journey. I’m more of a person who strolls along on my own, and occasionally stopping by the train stations for some good, old smackdown. If that makes sense.

So my plan for now is to get several characters to 80, then I’ll take it from there. I’ll probably set off into the HoT area soon, so wish me luck.

First of all, there have been so many awesome games coming out lately/in a while that I haven’t really played GW2 much since pre-HoT. Even when I find the time to dive back in, I intend to stay in the pre-HoT areas for a while to finish up the story, level up a few more characters and so on.

That said, the reviews I’ve seen about HoT all say it’s heavily focused on groups. Is this true? How is HoT for a lone wanderer? I strongly prefer going alone, so I can take my time, do what I want, go where I want and just enough… whatever I want. Groups usually rush from one place to the next. So as a lone wanderer, is HoT for me?

Also, and crucially, am I missing out on much if I skip this expansion, and rather go for the next? What I mean is I played Neverwinter for quite some time, but when the first new areas came around, they were mostly about grinding for two whole weeks (!) pr character to get enough bonuses etc for the third area. I stopped playing after that. I guess the question is if this goes for GW2? So am I “required” to play HoT to enjoy the next expansion? (yes, I know it’s far too early to even talk about the next expansion, but I’m thinking perma-buffs etc we get in HoT that can be useful in the next expansion.)

Why delay it? Everyone knows they delay things just to troll us. HoT was ready to be released back in June, but then there was the summer vacation, BBQs with the family, lazy days at the beach… better wait until October when people have time to play, and there’s not much to do outside.

(or, ah, the exact opposite. That works too. First make sure it works perfectly, then release it.)

OP, what are you talking about? The F2P announcement is for a limited trial as far as anyone can tell, and if you like the game you can purchase it to no longer be a limited trial account.

Actually, you can easily buy the game for ten dollars or less at a sale already, so a full F2P isn’t that unrealistic. ANet would loose some money on those sales, yes, but at the same time, they would draw in a lot more people who spend money on the gem store, and there would be a lot of people who get to lvl 80 and want to try the expansion. So even if the core game is 100% free, no restriction, ANet can easily end up making even more money than before. It’s a simple, rather common business strategy.

Think about SW: Old Republic, for instance. It was subscription-only, then went F2P. But instead of the game being doomed, it was more profitable than before. At least, the last I heard they were very happy with the profits after going F2P. It’s all about the big picture. You often have to spend money to make money. It’s called investing. How many of you have paid a lot of money to get to school, college, universities etc? Just about everyone I know did, and it’s all to get a better job and make more money. It cost a lot a couple of years, but they more than make it up for it with better jobs and better income.

Guild Wars 1 costumes were only 2 pieces. The headpiece and the rest of it. There was no more mixing than that. You never could mix the pants of one with the shirt of another.

Not to add too much fuel to the fire, but you do know you can remove the helmet from outfits? Don’t just take my word for it. Here’s me with the pirate outfit, with and without the hat. So if we can remove the hat, why not remove other things too? I’d love the crystal-something outfit without the ugly shoulder pieces.

Rant about gemstore selling strategy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

You are selling pieces of pixels for a lots of real money

I’ve never understood this type of logic. I’m a writer, but I don’t sell “pages with letters on them.” I sell stories that takes months to write, and several months more to edit into a somewhat decent book I can be proud of. Same goes for ANet. They outfits in the store aren’t just pixels. They are hours and hours of hard labor. Isn’t that worth a few bucks, if you like said outfit? For that matter, isn’t every game just a bunch of code and pixels put together?

Heaven forbid a b2p game that charges nothing monthly have any business tactics so they can continue to provide service.

That argument went out the window the moment they started doing expansions. This behavior is more something you’d expect from a F2P. They’ll never get a $1 from me for gem store nonsense.

Yet another type of logic that’s completely lost on me. GW2 is a B2P game, so ANet isn’t “allowed” to make expansions? Really? Or do you mean they can make all the expansions they want, as long as they sell them piece by piece in the gem store? Sorry, I just don’t understand what you are trying to tell us. No offense.

Guild Wars 2 requires a one-time purchase, and that’s it. Now you can play all you want for free. Now it’s been three years since launch, and they are finally making an expansions. How on earth is that a bad thing, just because they have a gem store? I… don’t… get… it… scratches head Are you saying you’d prefer if we never got new areas, never got a new profession, never got masteries, never got specializations and so on? Or should they sell all that individually in the gem store? Nevermind, I’m too tired to try to make sense of this logic of yours.

Edit: What about games with a subscription, like WoW? Is it ok that they charge a lot of money every month so you can play AND charge extra for expansions?

Guardian VS Warrior solo PvE...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

BattleCat.2098

I have a warrior at 45 and guardian at 50, so they are both high level, and both very similar levels. To my experience, they are too similar to recommend one over the other. Both have lots of weapons avaliable, so already right there, they cross over into each other’s territory. A guardian with a sword and shield will be better at survival than a warrior with two axes, but a warrior with two axes are probably much better at surviving than a guardian with a staff. But that’s why we have weapon sets.

I think the only way to really compare the two classes if you get both to max level, figure out how you want to play either of them, and then deck them out with the best gear you can find, that you actually want to use. What use is an exotic staff, if you want to use a greatsword? So decide what playstyle you want with both classes, get weapon sets for both classes and get them both to max level. It’s the only way to truly know which one you find best. Asking people on the forum is pointless. Roughtly half will say the guardian is the best, and the other half will say the warrior is best. Either way, it doesn’t have to mean anything, as you can have an entirely different playing style. The “best” class is the one you prefer, not necessarily the one with the most DPS. Again, it doesn’t matter if you find a rifle that does 400 damage, if you prefer using two axes that does only 170 damage each. They will do less damage overal, but with different skills that makes them a lot more fun to use, who cares? Stick to what you prefer, and kitten what everyone else says.

That leaves thieves, engineers as the least popular professions I see around.

I went back to the game today on my Engineer, to see if things were any different. I went to Skrittburgh, where you are supposed to fight the destroyers. It went like this:

- I could see two spiders ahead, so I fought both at once. Easy peasy.

- A couple of steps ahead, I saw another spider. I took a shot at it… then got attacked from behind from another spider. It had just fought two spiders there, so where could the third one (the one from behind) possibly have come from?

- I tried to revive some NPC a few seconds later… and got attacked by a spider. And seconds later, another spider appeared.

- After killing them, I went back to reviving the NPC. Then got attacked by two spiders after a few seconds.

- Having killed those two spiders, I decided to head back. Then… got attacked from behind. By three spiders.

This is just ridiculous. This wasn’t an issue on the mesmer, guardian or warrior (in the same area, at the same level), so I’ll just assume it’s an engineer bug. Guess I’ll just have to try a new class. Oh, well.

Thanks. As I said, I have a gun and shield, so there are a few AoE-skills that could draw more enemies. But I’ve been very aware of this, so I’ve avoided using those skills, to make sure I’m only fighting one at a time. Or at least, I’ve been trying to get one at a time. Or less than five at a time, anyway. And no, I don’t use turrets. I use the occasional minefield, but that’s it.

As for enemies spawning others and/or calling for help, that doesn’t explain things either, sadly. I’ve been to that part in Brisbane many times with many characters, and it has never been an issue. Furthermore, what about Skrittburg, where there are no places for anyoen to hide? Take a destroyer, for instance. I could clearly see there were just one destroyer. There were nowhere else for anyone to hide, and no destroyers close enough to help out. Even so, when I attacked it, I was quickly surrounded by seven destroyers. I killed one, then was left with only eight more… This isn’t even a one-time thing. It’s gotten so bad that I’ve decided to quit playing the engineer entirely, and are considering taking a break from the game, and hope the issue is solved the next time I play.

In fact, I said in the first post that I’ve deliberately waited to make this post, so I would be 100% sure this isn’t just something I’m imagening. I’m not making any of this up, and it’s not a rage-quit post. I’ve done my research, and I’m calm when writing this.

Well, good news is this thread was moved to the Bug-section, so I guess it’s a bug. IIf it helps, this is especially a problem with my gun/shield Engineer.

As for specific example, I could give you lots of them, as it happens all the time. Most recently, though, is the bandit camp in the north-east of Brisbane Highlands. You know, the “run past raptors to get to bandit camp” heart event. I somehow finished that event, but nearly gave up. A few reasons why:

1. I ran past two raptors on the way there. Just two. When I ran back, I was chased by three raptors and two spiders, as well as the six bandits that followed me from the camp. I had to run all the way into the friendly camp before the enemies gave up chasing me.

2. I could clearly see a bandit standing all alone in an open field, so I took a potshot at him. Two seconds later, I was surrounded by six (!) enemies, including one from behind. How he could possibly have gotten there without me noticing is beyond me. Keep in mind this was an open area, and I didn’t get past any bandits on the way there. One lone enemy? Nope, here are six of them. Sigh…

3. The best one, though? I fought a bandit on top of a hill, near some tents. For whatever reason, the bandit disappeared for a while, and a second appeared. We had a nice fight, but I eventually got killed – only for the first enemy (still with very few hitpoints left) coming out of the tent to fight me. He had literally been hiding in the tent until I died (or was laying on the ground, anyway), then he decided to finish me off.

A new notes, though. As I’m an engineer with a gun and shield, I do have a few skills that attacks several enemies. Shield bounce, gunshot bounce, grenade field, those things. But I was aware that they are AoE-skills, so I’ve tried to use them as little as possible, just to make sure I didn’t hit any other enemies by accident. They still keep on coming. In the bandit camp, my tactic was find the nearest enemy, shoot him until he died, then run away from the other enemies who spawned during the fight. It never failed. Whether there were one or three enemies at the start of the fight didn’t matter. There were always six or more by the end of the fight. Where they came from is beyond me.

And yes, this could in theory be a client-side problem, but it’s mainly a problem with the Engineer. My mesmer, guardian and warrior never had this issue, and they are all high level. If it was a client side problem, this should have been a big deal with these three as well, but it’s not.

My solution so far? Stop playing the engineer and try a new class. Sucks as I love the engineer, but I love a bug-free game more, so…

Please give "invisible" enemies cooldown

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

So I’m running around in Skrittburg, trying to not go insane. The reason? Invisible enemies. You know which ones I’m talking about. The instant I attack one, it goes invisible. Then it pops back up, attacks me once (often from behind…), then go invisible again. Pop back, hit once, invisible. Over. And. Over. And Over. And. Over… With just one of these, it’s very, very, very annoying. Two or more, and I’m having difficulties even surviving. Not because they are dangerous, but because I loose target-lock when they go invisible, making them near-impossible to hit. The only thing I can possibly do is using an AoE attack, but they are often immune to it when they go invisible. (or more likely, they probably just run outside the AoE circle while invisible.)

All this could be avoided if said enemies had a minor cooldown on the invisibility, like we players do. One second, that’s all I ask. Then I would be able to get in a hit every now and then when they are forced to be visible. One second, that’s all I ask.

What's going on with the enemy respawn rate?

BattleCat.2098

First of all, this isn’t just some angry rant. Or it kinda is, but I waited long enough to be absolutely sure this wasn’t just some one-time thing. You know what they say: “Once is an accident, two is a coincidence, three is a pattern.” Meaning if it happens once, it’s just an accident. If it happens twice in a row, it’s a weird coincidence, but if it happens three or more times in a row, there’s more too it than that. So after over a week with the same thing happening over and over again? Definitely a pattern.

So what am I talking about? Insane enemy respawn rates. Two of the biggest issues are these:

1. I fight a single enemy. Just one. There is only one enemy there. There is no way there can be a second enemy there. The enemy I fight runs out of hitpoints, gets the die-animation, and I loot the corpse. Then I turn around… and two seconds later, I’m attacked from behind with an enemy with very few hitpoints left. I am 100% sure I only fought one enemy, and I even looted its corpse, so where did this other enemy come from? And why does it only have a couple of hitpoints left? My best guess? The enemy somehow had regeneration, and the regen gave it a few hitpoints after it “died”, making it come back to life. Sounds strange, but this has happened so often with so many types of enemies that it’s not a coincidence, or a simple bug. There’s a pattern here. Something is bringing these enemies back to life. Too bad I can’t loot them twice, though.

2. Fighting two enemies at once? You’ll be here for a while. Simply because I kill one enemy, then fight the other, then fight the first enemy all over again. It simply respawns after a couple of seconds, and often during the fight. Hell, there have been an occasion where an enemy respawns while I’m looking at its corpse. Either the first one respawned nearly before it died, or a second enemy spawned out of the blue half a second after the first one died. Either way, it’s ridiculous.

There are more issues with enemy respawn rates I don’t like, but these two are by far the worst. I rarely even fight just one enemy at a time anymore, as a second (and often third, fourth and fifth…) spawn out of the blue during the fight. Call me crazy if you want, but this is something quite recent. My lvl 80 Mesmer, lvl 50 Guardian and lvl 41 Warrior never had any issues with this. It’s something I’ve experienced only the last two or three weeks. Plus, I’m trying to level up every class to 40 to get rare gear, so I stick mostly to the lower-level areas. I can’t even blame higher level areas for this.

So that raises the question: What is going on here? Are you guys noticing the same thing?

In your opinion, how long do you think gw2 will last before a real ‘next big mmorpg / gw3’ dislodges gw2 from its current throne? (yes i think gw2 is currently the best mmorpg)

Well, let’s look at historyk, shall we?

Star Wars: The Old Republic: A MMORPG made by BioWare, set in their awesome Old Republic-setting. What could possibly go wrong? They found a way…

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: Adventurers, crafters and diplomats (!) all were equally important. You could get a horse at lvl 10, but it didn’t matter if you were lvl 10 adventurer, lvl 10 crafter or lvl 10 diplomat. Add in awesome graphics, awesome races, a great combat system, flying mounts and tons of other stuff, and it should have been huge. It failed miserably.

Elder Scrolls! Online! What can possibly go wrong!!! Everything, apparently!

The Secret World! So secret no one actually played it.

Age of Conan = Best! Combat! Ever! Shame about the rest of the game…

Aion should have been the best thing ever. It… wasn’t.

ArcheAge? So much hype before release, so forgotten two days after release.

I could go on, but you get the idea. We have had countless “next big thing” that barely became the “next mediocre thing”. Everyone wants to make the next big thing, but very few actually succeeds. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

What does "Living World" mean to you?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

1 – Politics/dangers we face in the world.
2 – Where we live, we live in a house or some dwelling right?
3 – Having a job or career.
4 – Doing things for fun or entertainment.
5 – Exploring, finding new places, lands and such.
6 – Travel/Mounts.

Just throwing in my two cents here.

1. Check out the living story, or whatever it’s called.

2. I travel far too much to bother with my own house. I’d never spend more than a night or two there a month anyway, if even that. (though to be fair, I loved housing in Wildstar. A lot. Definitely a lot. Did that more than playing the actual game, even.)

3. My asura works as an engineer, and (spoiler!) won the Savant prize. Now she’s working for the Order of Whispers to fight Shaitan and save the world. How is she supposed to keep another job? “Sorry, I know your town is under attack and all, and I know your family is being butchered, but these newspapers don’t deliver themselves!”

4 and 5: Crafting? Exploring is fun (finding vistas, points of interest, jumping puzzles etc.) Lots of stuff to do here. Heck, I played my lvl 43 Guardian earlier today, and discovered by accident that I hadn’t even started on Caldeon forest, and have only four hearts done in Gendarran fields. By the time she’s 80, there will still be tons of areas to explore I haven’t even visited. And that before the expansion. The expansion adds hanggliding and learning new languages to find new areas too. Wonder what’s after that? Could be anything.

6. I’d love mounts, but to be fair, they aren’t needed in this game. Adding them would probably just be too much work. I’d get on my motorcycle, travel around for thirty minutes, get bored and start teleporting to waypoints again. What’s the point in mounts?

I’d say go with whatever race you think you’ll enjoy the most. If you haven’t made an asura or charr yet, may I ask why? If it’s because you don’t like either race much, then that’s your answer. Don’t make one of those. There’s nothing wrong with having nine characters of the same race., and there’s nothing wrong with having one of each race. It’s yoru game, so the imjportant part is that you enjoy it.

Personally, I hate playing a charr, as they keep running on all fours all the time. I think that both looks and feels ridiculous. I do love asura, but I’m not a big fan of their gear (mostly). Sylvari are nice, but I don’t like their faces much (with some exceptions). Humans are fun, but boring. They are in ever game ever made. Norn are fun, but too big. When I’m teamed up with humans, it makes me feel like I’m taking the kindergarten on a field trip, as they are so small compared to me (and I made sure to pick the smallest body size.) The point is, every race has flaws, but they all have awesome sides too.

Plus, if you’re an asura, you get to spend time with Zoija, voiced by the lovely Felicia Day. That’s why my of my char’s are asura.

Why does PvP exist? I can do PvP for six hours straight, yet I have nothing to show for it afterwards.

Why does jumping puzzles exist? They are very hard to find, and even harer to do. Just a waste of time.

Why does heart events exist? They don’t give all that much XP, and dynamic events are far more fun anyway.

Why do we have to harvest our crafting materials? Just a waste of time. We could simply buy the stuff we want in the trading post, or even get it for free to save time.

Why do we have dyes? How often do you bother dye your clothes when leveling? Or even at max level?

Why do we have several playable races? They don’t do anything different other than a couple of racial skills no one uses, and a quick, personal story that all leads up to the same point.

Why do… well, you get the idea. Different people like different things. I like crafting to give my alts good stuff, and to see what I can learn to create. For me, the crafting is a lot of fun. I’ll gladly do a lot of crafting just to enjoy myself.

Quick question. My first engineer was lvl 30 when she was deleted. The second was lvl 25. My current one is lvl 15, but she’s an asura, and started the game by charging to the crafting stations in Rata Sum and haven’t looked back. All her non-tutorial gametime has been crafting. Does this count as “playing an engineer”? Or on other words, are the “profession time” the time you’ve spent doing profession things like killing enemies, events and exploring, or do we including crafting, RPing, jumping puzzles and all that too?

What do you plan to do in GW2 today?

Already played a bit today, and here’s what I’ve done:

1. Climbed to the top of a tower in Lion’s Arch for a vista, put on diving gear and did a leap of faith. Seriously, the diving gear was a clue that I would hit the water, but I didn’t know for sure until I did, thanks to the horrible camera. Until the very last second, I thought I was going to hit the beach. That splash felt awesome.

2. Tried my best at a jumping puzzle. Let’s just say that didn’t end well. Lol.

3. Discovered a nice building under the water in Lion’s Arch. Pointless, but nice.

4. Got motivated by the underwater-building to go explore and find new, nice things to see.

5. Gathered a whole bunch of loot-bags, then pretended it was Christmas already. And all the presents were for me! Me! Me! MEEEE!!! Ahem… sorry…

6. Sighed heavily as I looked at the counter for the guild armor. Kinda cool to get armor with my own insignia, when I’m in a one-person guild. Next up, guild weapons.

7. Had fun looking at the auction house in Rata Sum, trying to find new, shiny stuff to spend money on. I always do. It’s my superpower.

8. Considered becoming a cook. Then sold my cooking ingredients, but kept the cooking outfit. It looks awesome with the right colors and no hat.

My purchases:

1. New outfits. Essential if you want to look good on early levels, and who doesn’t want to look good even on early levels? Also great for roleplaying, if you’re into that stuff.

2. New hairstyles. Make you look a bit more special than all those standard-hairstyle-characters.

3. New skins. Again, this has to do about looking good and feeling special. That’s why I’m running around with a princess wand and top hat.

4. Extra crafting license. Not exactly essential, but with three crafting professions pr character, I have all covered with just three characters. Not bad. Less characters to focus on means more time to enjoy the ones I do focus on.

5. Character slots, so I have one of each profession. Kinda makes the last point a bit silly, but nevermind that. I like having one of each profession around lvl 30ish to see how they feel to play, before I commit to one.

Solo dungeons?

BattleCat.2098

Thanks, everyone. And sorry for a bit late reply. Been too busy trying to finish the story. Just fought a big dragon in Lion’s Arch and united the three orders, so I assume I’m done soon. But anyway, I guess I won’t try to solo a dungeon any time soon. Maybe I’ll just reluctantly try to find a group, or something.

Or… gasp… are intended for solo play?

They are designed as group experience.
No offense, but I think its a bit strange to ask for solo dungeons in a MMO. MMO are (or should be) teamgames. GW2 offers no teamcontent except dungeons/fractals.

Why is solo dungeons so strange? We already have some rather awesome solo story-missions, so why not a solo dungeon? It could be the same as the group one, just scaled down to suit one player. Consider it a “practice” dungeon, if you want. Besides, history has shown us countless times that things that might sound ridiculous on paper is actually pretty darn clever, and there are countless inventions that left a lot of people thinking: “Why didn’t I think of that?”.

(and btw, keep in mind I want to add solo-dungeons, but NOT remove the group-dungeons. Add more, not remove. Kinda important to keep in mind.)

Besides, I’ve said time and again that people keep forgetting the RPG-bit of MMORPG. MMORPGs aren’t games where you are stuck playing with others. They are RPGs with tons of other people around. There’s a huge difference there. You can play solo all you want, just like you can play with others all you want. You can ignore the MMO-bit entirely if you want and go solo, and you can ignore the RPG-bit entirely if you want, and rather do other stuff like PvP, or meeting friends. There is no right or wrong way to play MMORPGs. Other than “If you’re having fun (and not on someone else’s expense), you’re doing it right.”

Wishlist for future Expansions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

There are several things I want:

1. More stuff to do in low-level areas. Just about every expansion in every MMORPG ever made ha focused 90% on the end-game content. Which makes sense, as there are a lot of players there. But why ignore the low-level areas? Example to scare your socks off: Neverwinter. The first new areas focused on grinding your nuts off for weeks to get various bonuses. Next new area? Focused on grinding your nuts off to get various bonuses. Both were accessible at max level, so that’s fine. But the third area? The only way to get there was to grind BOTH the old “new” areas to get those bonuses. That means grinding a minimum of TWO WEEKS PR CHARACTER just to get to that new area. That was ridiculous. Then when we got a fourth new area, guess what? The only way to get there was to have bonuses you could only get from the third area. So unless you had already grinded for two weeks (pr character) to get to the third area, then grinded THAT for a long time, you couldn’ get to the new area. It goes without saying that excluded a ton of players, me included. And that’s why I stopped playing an otherwise awesome game. Please don’t do the same mistake with GW2. New areas are fun, and yes, we need more content for high-level players. But please don’t forget it was the low-level players and new players who goty ou to max level in the first place. No one starts at max level, and if there are no new content for low-level areas, grinding up to max level will just be tedius and boring, so a lot of people simply won’t bother.

2. Underwater stuff to do. Seriously, with such an awesome gameplay mechanic underground, why don’t we use it? At all? Ever? I can only remember a handful of events that forced me to stay underwater, and maybe two or three bosses. Not even big bosses, just “you might want a few friends for these ones” bosses. And the way underwater gameplay works, playing underwater should have been a huge part of the game. “Here’s a diving mask, so you can stay underwater forever! Except there’s no reason to! So you can’t even dye your breathing mask, as why would you ever want to wear it in the first place?” Sigh… you might as well buy the biggest, baddest SUV you can get, just to drive to work in the city. What’s the point?

3. A better wardrobe system. Again, seriously. Paying a transmutation skittence to change the looks of my clothes is fine, but why do I have to pay it over and over and over? Would it be fine if you had to pay to dye your clothes every time too? No? Exactly. I’ve paid once, so isn’t that enough?

4. Let us save dye selections. If I spend twenty minutes finding the perfect dye for my clothes, why can’t I simply save those colors for later? Putting them in favorites works for the first set, but what if I use a lot of colors for a lot of clothes? Outfits, for example. I like a shadowy dye for the assassin clothes, a white shird and brown pants for the pirate outfit, a dark red for the dress, and so on. Having to dye them over and over and over every time I switch is just tedius and boring, and I can’t always remember what clothes I even used. Please let me save the color scheme.

5. Mounts. Yes, the waypoint system is fine if you like fast travelling, but what about us who wants to explore? A mount that lets us travel 20% faster would be very nice. Or just 15% faster. Wildstar has hoverboards. Think about that for a second, then picture charging through Metrica Province on a hoverboard, with the Back to the future theme cranked up to 11 on Spotify. Surely we can all agree that would be the best thing ever?

Solo dungeons?

BattleCat.2098

This might be a stupid question, and I’ve received quite a lot of trolling for it on other forums for other games. But quick version: Are there dungeons you can solo? Story mode, perhaps? Or explore? The thing is, I’m sticking to solo as much as I can, and only join groups for dynamic events. There are loads of reasons for this. Some reasons why I don’t usually bother with dungeons include things like:

- “Everyone just rushes through them, and never really take their time to enjoy them.” Kinda sucks, as dungeons are often the most visually striking and fun places in MMOs. That’s like going to McDonalds, ordering “whatever, just surprise me”, eating your food in a hurry and leaving again, just because you’ve been to McDonalds before. What’s the point in not enjoying the food?

- “Everyone expect me to be an expert on my first time through.” I’ve been kicked from quite a few dungeons in quite a few games because of this. Not an expert? Kicked!

- “I can’t play my own way, or the holy trinity is everything”. Over in LotRO, I was playing a guardian in a dungeon, and had the nerve to use a two-handed weapon for extra damage, rather than a shield for extra protection. Nevermind that there was another guardian there too, and he was the main tank. Guardians are tanks, and tanks uses shields. I didn’t use one, so I got kicked.

I could go on, but you get the idea. I’ve had plenty of fun times in dungeons, but lots of horrible experiences too. So are there dungeons you can solo? Or… gasp… are intended for solo play?

Add pvp to all maps...

in PvP

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

Having this flag Idea in PvE: I could run around and maybe do map completion with a slight challenge, duel my friends with real builds that happen to be on the same server, organize brawls in map chat (no loot needed) or just have general brawls with guildies on areas we choose like at the top of towers on little platforms or what ever, maybe even the arena in LA could be put to some good use.

“Brawls in areas you choose” is exactly why I DON’T want open-world PvP. I like exploring the map and having fun, and I really like when I find another player doing the same thing as me and teaming up in a very temporary group. This is in many ways the best part of the entire game. The last thing I want is to see this ruined by idiots who got bored of the game, and are running around all over the place looking for people to fight. “Five minutes to the fire elemental spawn? PvP! Right in front of it! Woohoo!” “Hard to reach vista? Let’s have a fight! Woohoo!” and so on. It would ruin the immersion of the game, and it could easily mean people would avoid each other rather than team up, just because we are sick of duel-requests.

Furthermore, there’s the duel requests. As a veteran from LotRO, this is something I know all too well. I’m standing there in a swamp in the middle of nowhere, a player shows up, wait for me to finish fighting the mini-boss I’m fighting, and… “let’s duel!” Grrrrr…. no. And no, I won’t join your guild either, so don’t even bother ask. (I’m in a one-person guild for a reason.)

What about public areas, like Rata Sum? There are always tons of people there, so there’s bound to be people to fight there. Sure you’ll ruin the fun for everyone else who are just trying to have a peaceful time, but nevermind that. You get PvP. Who cares what EVERYONE ELSE wants? This is your game, so it’s all about you, right?

I could go on, but no, we do most definitely NOT need open-world PvP in any form or shape. Even a “simple duel-request” is a horrible idea, as it means people spamming said request all the time to whoever they find. Even with a “auto-reject duel requests” like in LotRO, it doesn’t mean people won’t try their best to change your mind. I really like thi game because it’s so peaceful and friendly. Open-world PvP is the exact opposite of that. I don’t even know how many times I’ve dropped an otherwise great game because the only option was PvP. Don’t make this yet another game on that list.

BattleCat.2098

I love the wardrobe system, but it has a MAJOR flaw: 2Every single time I want to change the looks of something, it will cost me a transmutation shard. This is just ridiculous. I’m fine with spending a transmutation shard for changing something’s apperance, but why do I have to spend one every time after that? Let’s say I make a custom outfit I’m very happy with. With a hat, chest, shoulders, gloves, pants and boots, that’s already six shard right there. No problem, I have 30+ so far. But when I want to make another outfit, it will cost me six more. That’s 12 in total so far. Again, no big deal. I have 30+, so I can afford it. But… now let’s say I want to change back to the first outfit. The one I already paid for. Can I simply change back? Nope, once I changed the outfit again, the first one is gone. Bye bye. Nice knowing you. So if I want that outfit back, it will cost me six shard more.

It goes without saying this is a ridiculous system. Changing the costume once will cost me six shards, but why do I have to spend those shards every time I want the costume back? Why can’t it simply be buy once, enjoy forever like the rest of the game? We should simply spend some shards transforming our current costume into a custom outfit we can swap into whenever we want. It means making more outfits would be a lot more fun, and we wouldn’t have to worry so much what we spend our transmutation shards on.

Then there are other characters, of course. Nine professions, all with six shards each to create a custom outfit. That’s 54 shards right there – and, again, that’s to change the costsume once. If you change it to something else, then want to change back, you’ll have to pay all over again.

Lord of the Rings Online had a wonderful costume system. In short, you have two cosmetic outfits you can swap in to whenever you want. Instead of actually equipping anything here, you only equip a copy of the item. This means you can wear the same custom hat on both costume slots, and you only need once copy of it. Found a nice, fancy jacket you like? You can equip it cosmetically and not worry about the stats, and you can keep it forever AND change the second costume as much as you want. You can thus spend a lot of time creating a custom costume you really like, and still mess around with the second costume safely. You can even map these costumes to hotkeys.

The point is I do love making a custom costume for my characters, but the system in GW2 is severely flawed. I dare say it’s close to a joke. The rest of the game is awesome, so why is the costume-bit so absurdly ridiculous?

“I am not a soldier…”, said my character. Actually, you are a norn guardian. That’s as soldiery as you can get. You are most definitely a soldier. Hehehe. But yeah, I would love to see the professions matter a lot more than they do today. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but maybe take a clue from Elder Scrolls and give us various guilds, like thieve’s guilds, fighter’s guild, mage’s guild, and so on? It’s called Guild wars, after all. So where are all the guilds?

Which profession is the best for leveling?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

By this, I mean which profession levels the quickest and the most efficiently?

This isn’t WoW. Other than dungeons and PvP, end game starts at level 1. You can be level 50, going to a starter area, kill a random mob and get better gear. I’ve done that plenty of times. Going back to low-level areas simply mean you are downscaled, so you won’t be godlike, yet the XP and loot are scaled to your level.

Or in other words: Levels are pointless. They give you access to higher level areas, but they don’t take away the lower level areas from you either. And trust me, when you reach level 80, you still have tons of areas left to explore. On top of all that, keep in mind max level isn’t going to increase any time soon. Instead we’ll get masteries and specializations that makes the professions different and more fun, but not necessarily better in any way.

Furthermore, what do you mean “most efficient”? You can XP for just about anything – except killing stuff. Or you do, but it’s really not that much. I levelled nearly instantly from lvl 68 to 76 simply by reaching a new tier in my crafting, meaning I had a whole lot of new stuff to work with. New ore, new planks, new gear. I spend time exploring every area to get 100% map completion. It takes a while, and I don’t often see the XP bar popping up much. But when I get the 100% MC, it pops up quite a bit. And now that my mesmer is lvl 80, there are still plenty of places I haven’t even visited yet, and even more I haven’t gotten 100% MC on yet. My crafting is only lvl 200ish, so there’s a lot more to do there. You get the idea. Have fun, and don’t focus on reaching a pointless max level as quickly as possible, as there isn’t anything to do there anyway you can’t already do on lower levels.

Too long, didn’t read: This game is about having fun, so “end game” starts at level 1.

A few thoughts. I used to built my own computers, thinking I saved a ton of money and got the best of the best. But in recent years, I stopped bothering. Sure, if you want to build everything yourself, you can save a bit here and there. But to my experience, there are stores and websites that build the computer for you, and they don’t cost much more than building it yourself. You also save a ton of time and effort by getting it sent directly to you, and on top of that, you also know it works right out of the box. If anything were to go wrong with it, you can simply send it back and have it repaired or replaced.

All in all, building your own computer isn’t really worth it anymore, unless you want the feeling of having built it yourself. But if it’s just a money issue, there’s not much point.

I grew up in the 80s with ZX Spectrum, Tiki-100, Commodore 64 and Amiga 600, so when it comes to FPS, I have two settings: Smooth or not smooth. Whether the FPS is 30 or 120 doesn’t interest me at all, anymore than I cared about the quality of DVD-movies over VHS-movies. Or blue-ray over DVD, for that matter. I’ll happily watch a poor cam-version of a movie. (note: it’s legal over here, based on the “why can I borrow a movie from a neighbor, but not from my sister in another city?”)

But anyway, I haven’t noticed anything different when upgrading to Win10. Love the system so far, and I can now record gameplay direct from Windows (Win-key + Alt + R). But performance? Couldn’t really care less. Maybe it’s faster, maybe it’s the same. Either way, you have nothing to loose. Especially if you, like me, got Win10 for free.

I never understood why some people are so intent on playing MMOs in bubble.

That’s because far too many people focus on the MMO-bit, and completely forget the RPG-bit. The term is MMORPG, after all. If you want to play with others and focus on the MMO-bit, you can do that. But if you want to ignore the MMO-bit and rather focus on the RPG-bit, there’s nothing wrong with that either. MMO and RPG are equal in MMORPG.

On-topic, I don’t mind hiding minis. I absolutely hate those. Mini animals is annoying enough, but mini humans? That’s just absurd. And sure, people spend real money on this stuff, but so what? Why am I being punished just because you spend money on something for your own character?

Highlighting mobs (even with an arrow pointing towards them) could be fun, but keep in mind it should not affect combat in any way. Masteries has to be optional. That’s why I want to use it to search for treasure, caves and so on. All that can be spawned at random (like dynamic events, even), but it doesn’t give anyone any advantages.

However, what they could do is give everyone a “mini-sonar” that highlights enemies when used. That way everyone has it, and it won’t do anything useful. We can still use a “real” sonar mastery to dig for treasure etc.

I could see a lot of the people lauding the challenge become annoyed with the mobs as time goes by.

That’s why I don’t get the outrage about nerfing. It’s never, ever a one-time thing. Balancing is addressed over time, whether it’s mob difficulty, classes and whatever. Too difficult? Adjust it and make it easier. Got too easy? Adjust it and make it harder. Threads like this is pointless because of it. Some want something nerfed, others don’t. In the end, we can’t please both, so ANet will do what they think is best, as always. If that kittenes off a few fans, then so be it, as long as it makes tons others happy.

Mastery suggestion: Underwater sonar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

BattleCat.2098

Here’s the basics: I really, really love the underwater-bits in this game, but there just aren’t enough of it. So why not expand on it? I know a whole area set more or less entirely under water is just a dream, but can we expand on the zones we already have? Yes, I think so. And here’s how: Give us an underwater sonar as a mastery.

The sonar will function much like a PipBoy for you Fallout-fans, as in a small, wristmounted thingy you can use for various things like sending a soundwave (the “sonar”) to discover things, a small, explosive rocket and so on.

At level 1, you can use it to send out a small sound that will travel until it hits something, then bounce back to your sonar-device. This will tell you how far away the thing is, and how big it is. Think real-life ecco sounding for finding fish etc. But the sound here will be able to travel a short distance under sand etc, letting you find things you can’t see with your bare eyes. This can be “translated” to spawning things at random – even in old zones, as I said. That way, even old zones can be brought to new life with new treasures.

Later stages will obviously make the sonar device more powerful, so you can find things buried even deeper. Plus, it can also be send through solid rock to some degree, letting you know if there is anything behind it. And why would you want that? Easy. If there isn’t anything behind it, it means there is a cave of some sort there. And caves means treasure. Normal caves, ancient ruins, hidden pirate coves with zombie pirates, you name it. I’m thinking a small beeping-sound will be nice to tell if there is anything behind the rock, and if it is, the beeping could be faster the closer you get to the entrance. Then when you found the entrance, simply detonate a small, explosive torpedo to uncover the entrance, and have fun exploring.

This system can let you find things at random, so again, even old zones can have some interest in the underwater-sections. Plus, the caves can be spawned at random too, so you literally never know what you’ll find, and where you’ll find it. If each cave is instanced (a quick loading screen here, I think), the ocean floors won’t be covered in empty caves, either. Every player finds his or her own. If we already have individual crafting nodes, how hard can it be to get individiual caves and treasures?

On top of all this, the whole sonar-thing is a simple device on your hand, so there won’t be much need for more graphics etc. And, again, it can work in every zone, even the starter zones.

Ridiculous Ideas of what A Game is

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BattleCat.2098

BattleCat.2098

My two cents:

What I want most of all is value for my bucks. I don’t care if a game is free, or cost 90$ (as most do over here.) I want to play a game and know I got value for my money. That’s pretty much it. That’s why I rarely go to the cinema. Movies are just too expensive, so when I rarely go to see one in the cinema, it’s because I know I get value for the money. I know the movie’s worth it. Which is why I watched Jurassic World three times in the cinema, but nevermind that.

With GW2, I know I get value for my money. Tons of it. It was cheap to begin with, and it doesn’t cost anything to play other than the one time investment when I bought it. How can anyone complain about that? I’ve been around for three months this time (nevermind the launch account I lost), so that’s already two and a half months more than I’ve played just about any other game, other than LotrO, Neverwinter and Vanguard. All MMORPGs. Neverwinter even had the guts to be completely free. Imagine that. Completely free, one of the best MMOs on the marked.

And know what I did last night? I played Fallout Shelter for four hours non-stop while watching TV. Sure most of it was sitting around waiting for dwellers to not show up (sigh…) or fighting back raiders, but I did make progress now and then. Even got two babies and a guy killed in the wasteland. And the best part? Fallout Shelter is free.

On top of that, I bought a second copy of Alien: Colonial Marines. A special edition, even. Sure the game was decent, but two copies? Including a special edition? Well, the special edition means I have an alien fighting a loader standing in my shelf. Totally worth it for an alien nut like me. I enjoyed the game (especially multiplayer), but the alien/loader was totally worth it for me.

The point is, it doesn’t matter to me what a game cost. Some are free, some are expensive. But as long as I can put the game down with a smile and agree with myself that I got value for my money, that’s all I want. I’d buy a retro-game for 200$ (actually, I did… Castlevania: The New Generation in perfect condition on Sega Genesis) if I think it’s worth it. If it’s not worth it, I won’t even download it for free.
