I don’t usually come and respond to the posts by clueless ignorants on here (and the forums are 99% filled with those), but seriously – please, identify the guy who said that rangers “has always been overpowered and meta-like”. I was told by people on the map chat that there are the ^%^&*#$%@# who said that here.

Show me the ones who said that, please.

PS The quick change by the dev team as a response to those who cried over the recent buff of the ranger class is a joke. Enough said. 3 stacks of might with the WHaO? Amazing, indeed.

The problem with WaO was that it could stack long duration boons that were really powerful like protection and quickness.

The issue was not with might stacking. The might limit of 3 was a knee jerk overnerf that was not necessary. They should have just used the fortifying bond template of boon duration and the might stacks would have fallen off within 10 seconds with a maximum of 17.5 seconds if someone used might runes.

However, as with everything, they completely over reacted.

Exactly, overreaction is the new name for ANet Team recently.

I think WHaO was OP in it’s buffed stat. I played BWE2 almost exclusively on a herald revenant and I loved building up large durations of boons passively. The big difference between ranger and herald is the herald had to lock down a large chunk of their profession resource to do it (upkeep of several skills) and it was the intended design focus of the specialisation – sacrifice energy to maintain AoE boons. The ranger used a single skill which snowballed once you obtained boons from other sources that easily rivaled what the herald’s primary appeal is (admitedly the herald is AoE while the ranger was simply it and its pet). It also revolved around using a heal for something other than healing.

Having said that I think ArenaNet tapped into something with the change which I think could be really valuable when looking at the ranger in the future – game design which rewards the player with unique interactions between their character and the pet. Copying boons too and from the pet is a really cool mechanic! So few ranger tools fully utilize the pet’s existence in their design and there often feels like their is little or no synergy to most things the ranger does with the pet (the druid has almost no design space used on the pet and only helps the pet as much as it helps any other ally).

WHaO was unusual in that it embodied a strong bond between a ranger and its pet (similar to RaO) and manifested that in a way that rewarded players for investing time and resources into caring about what boons the pet had. It seems the devs struggle to find ways to incorporate the ranger’s profession mechanic into the game in a way which is fun and meaningful (it’s so hard the pet is almost entirely absent in druid design) but WHaO had that thing ranger skills and traits do so badly.

I’d like to see the mechanic removed from WHaO and maybe added to a Nature Magic GM trait or to Rampage as One’s base functionality. It was problematic as a low CD heal, but on a longer CD elite it could be really good.

Find another way to make WHaO distinct – the current nerfed boon sharing is worthless.

A good comment! In the sea of cry-out and lament, this is something valuable. While I do not agree with all of the points, like the majority of us now, I feel that “the current nerfed boon sharing is worthless”, indeed. It does not warrant using a heal skill for the sake of what, 3 mights? What a joke.

In all honesty, why don’t you guys at ANet nerf Druid already, prior to its release? I am pretty sure that some unsustained criticism (or should I call it cry-out, for criticism means some thought process prior to its creation, whereas here all we got from most of the posters was “RANGERS ARE OP, NERF”) and cry-out is enough for you to make changes to something you guys have probably been thinking about for a long time, even before the Druid has come into realisation.
This is getting out of your hand, ANet. “Hey, 25 stacks of might for a ranger? That’s too much!” – if something like that is enough for you to change the transfer of boons, then I feel sorry for you, and myself. I miss the times when your dev teams had more control of what you were doing. Guess the f2p model, some staff changes etc. changed it all to worse.

Can someone please explain to me this.

Yesterday, I was able to get myself and my pet 14 stacks of might using 3 signets and Jungle Stalker’s F2, and then using WHaO 25 stacks of might.

Why, today after some weird patch, I get only 17? Did they nerf the transfer of the boons? If so, it must have been due to the kids’ cry in the forums, I guess.

I appreciate all the answers.

EDIT: Ok, having read some of the messages above, I went to the twitter (why twitter???). I guess some people were too furious in their childness to appreciate some positive changes to the ranger FINALLY! God, this game is getting out of hand. The devs should use their judgement patiently, not rush to unreasonable conclusions after reading how “RANGERS ARE OP, NERF” topics and posts. This is ridiculous.

Build variety is there. Notice that no build is top-tier in all modes, and all professions do have multiple meta builds in all areas right now (save Necromancer for PvE). Granted, for most professions “multiple” means “two.”

More importantly, all of these builds play quite differently from one another.

Mediocrity in gameplay doesn’t sell gems with me but then again I am not their target audience.
I had such high hopes for GW2 and while it is a good game it just really isn’t what I had envisioned it to be.
I loved doing the dungeons in GW1 and while most are “ok” for GW2 the only real one that is truely fun is Aetherblade path, which has terrible rewards for the effort.
GW2 will be on the backburner for me until there is significant content that is not only challenging and rewarding but fun.

Pretty much this. For anyone who played older and more complex MMOs like GW1, Lineage 2 and WoW, some of the ideas here in GW2 are just disappointing. I still, however, have some hopes for an exp pack delivering at least the amount of quality new content that GW1 campaigns delivered.

Why GW2 just isn't working

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corpus Christi.2057

Corpus Christi.2057

My take on it is this:

Skill selection was better in GW1.
Build diversity was leaps and bounds better in GW1.
The story/writing was better in GW1.
The balance arguably was better in GW1.
The amount of PvP game modes was better in GW1.
Repeatable endgame content was superior in GW1.
RNG was less apparent in GW1.
The combat mechanics are better in GW2.
The graphics are better in GW2.
The existence of a trading post is a plus for GW2.
The open world is plus for GW2.

I would have been greatly impressed had ANet simply used the GW1 mold, but in an open world, with updated graphics, a server-wide trading post, and the current combat mechanics (move-while-casting and dodge roll). Now that’s a game I would have loved.

Oh yeah, now that would have been ABSOLUTELY AWESOME to have had the “best of GW1 in GW2” with GW2s mechanics, graphics, TP and open world. That would have been a game i’d have proposed to not just loved as I did in GW1.

The majority of the people that I play with in GW2 agree on this. Put the GW1’s soul ( content and features, e.g. maps, skillsets, dungeons, classes and so on ) into GW2’s body ( mechanics and visuals ) and you’ll get the best MMO game ever.

You don’t need to be on a server with a high australian population. The game uses a megaserver system where you can play with anyone on any server.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Introducing_the_Megaserver_System

That is unless he wants to find someone to play WvW with. I can’t remember what server the Asuies choose as their unofficial server. It also may have changed recently. It is a high possibility that it may be one of the servers that are currently full.

I’ve seen many Canadians and Aussies at Desolation ( EU ), which was/is most likely the best server ever ( they would always do something first thanks to their amazing cooperation within the community, without any guild taking over and so on ). Kaz’s reply is a typical “save the day” forum reply. As seen above, people actually agree that FoTM is a dungeon. When most of the people say that there’s “nothing new added”, they don’t usually mean “null, zero, nothing at all”, but rather “very little” – as you can see from the replies to Kaz’s comment.
As a matter of further explanation, I’ll give you what most of the people here ( correct me if I’m wrong ) mean when they say “there’s no new endgame content here”. One link should be sufficient: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Campaign
Open each page of GW1’s campaigns + expansion ( EoTN ) and see how much “new endgame content” was added within 2 years of game’s premiere ( exactly how old GW2 is atm ). You will quickly understand why the people who were familiar with the GW universe long before GW2 was created, have started to complain again the lack of “new endgame content” in GW2.
Anyone familiar with GW2 and ANet’s policy will also know that the living story is a means of addressing “the development of Guild Wars 2 and its new content”, instead of traditional box-expansions that GW1 had. Again, anyone trying to look at the matter from the objective point of view will get the thing: the game is developing, as well as adding new content too slow, hence such great dissatisfaction here on the forums.
One more thing, Kaz. Please, learn to have some more respect to people who try to have an adult conversation here, and stop insulting them with your “amnesia or denial” examples, i.e. other forum users.

2014 most lackluster year for gw2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corpus Christi.2057

Corpus Christi.2057

Precisely. The best example here is pretty much any campaing/expansion that was added to GW1.
Each one of them added 2 x more than what the whole 2 years of GW2 added. Not to mention, quality wise, the new content was superior, too.
That’s pretty much what it is all about.

how do you measure something like that?
Gw1 is just too different from Gw2.

I mean lets consider say a dungeon from eye of the north, say Bloodstone Caves (kinda liked that one and ran it a gazillion times, only reason why I picked it). You measure that as being 1:1 with say TA or even with say a single fractal? You may argue that sure why not 1 dungeon for 1 dungeon but then lets be realistic
Does it take the same amount of time to make this:

http://atyrianodyssey.com/gw/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/bloodstone-caves_L2monolith.jpg

as it takes to make this

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/4/47/Underground_Facility_Fractal.jpg

Gw2 has way more props, way higher poly count. more texture layers etc..

which brings us back to my original statement how do you measure the two ?

Content is nice and all that but it needs to be created. With more complexity and more detail it obviously takes a lot more time to create new content in gw2 then it did in gw1.

Besides we dont know all the content thats being developed in gw2 right now either, for all we know they maybe even be working on an expansion we dont yet know about. Most of the content (LS) released by now was developed by just 20 or so people. there are another 330 of them working at Anet! and I dont think they’re being paid to just play the game and do nothing else.

From the very beginning, you are wrong on a logical standpoint.

You cannot under any circumstances claim that it takes more effort to create anything in GW2 than it does in GW1. Those two games were created in different times, with different technological advancements and technologies available. It couldn’t be more safe to assume that GW1 was as difficult to create in the past as GW2 now. Your point is logically invalid.

Second, you asked “how do we measure?” Having in mind the above, extremely important correction to your illogical thinking, now having 1:1 ratio, it’s very easy to measure the two games. Look at what each campaign and expansion added to the game, and how long after the game’s premiere they were introduced. You will see, that again, GW1 had 5 x more content than GW2 during two years of its life.

I think I covered it all. Again, I’m not saying GW2 is “bad, it sucks” and so on as many people on these forum do, but I just state that it: 1) doesn’t live up to its potential 2) it’s developed worse than GW1 3) although successful, it’s not as successful as some people think it is.

Cheers

Just so people aren’t misled. GW2 being ‘neck and neck’ FF14 is misleading.
It’s ‘neck and neck’ with the PC version of FF14, however FF14 is on PS3/PS4, which obviously do not register on Xfire/Raptr.
Then there’s Wildstar, where people estimated it only sold under 500k at launch, based on NCSoft’s 2Q 2014 financials.
And here’s the Raptr ranking for Wildstar’s launch compared to GW2 (rank 6 vs rank 18, with a relative difference of ~3 times for hours played).

@Vayne
Although the most anticipated and promising MMOs out there are most likely “Bless” and “Black Desert Online”, I decided to install AA and try it out.

Tbh, AA reminds of GW1 and Lineage 2 a lot, which is good and definitely > GW2 in terms of complexity and diversity of builds and endgame, as well as it has open PvP ( which is neutral, i.e. a pro to some and a con to others ). With regards to game mechanics, it also reminds me of the aforementioned games, but in this respect it’s a drawback – indeed, movement as well as some fighting mechanics feel outdated. But with regards to some spells ( not all, as you seem to have pointed out ), they need standing still when casting. But, tbh, with the amount of skills that you can have ( much more than in GW2 ), I don’t think that this particular aspect of game will be a hugh drawback, if any. After all, you have more skills, whose effects look better visually overall, plus the skills that you mention, i.e. standing still when casting, are above all instant-kill skills, some of which cast for approx. 5s! I don’t think, realistacilly speaking, you’d be moving like feather ( GW2 ) when casting an instant-kill skill, right? You can have both mobility and ultra-powered skill. You’ve got to have a negative to such a powerful skill, i.e. standing still when casting. Sounds totally logical.
I played a ranger-typed class ( wish this class was that epic in GW2 :/ ) and it felt more dynamic than ranger in GW2. But it’s just my personal opinion.

Nevertheless, I don’t think AA is what it was supposed to be, especially with its many limitations for f2p users ( most notably, regeneration of labour pts., limited crafting, housing and so on ).

What’s bothering me most is Diablo got an expansion, ESO got an expansion, Aion got an expansion, Rift got an expansion, EverQuest got an expansion, ArcheAge is getting an expansion, Wildstar is getting an expansion etc. What do we get? a couple of weeks in a new zone the size of a coat closet and a Feature Patch that breaks all kinda game play. To top it off about 80% were “features” no one asked for. Like all the nerfs. Again. As usual.

Moreover, lately we get a steady drop off of new items in the Gem Store. Add to all this ArenaNet only seems to pay lip service to providing players with some kinda roadmap for the future of the game. It kinda makes you feel as if all they’ve got up their sleeve is their arm. Pretty much all the talk we get from them is a form of “Smiling and Nodding”. You should go over to http://massively.joystiq.com/ to see Guild Wars 2 in perspective to other games and the companies supporting them.

Now, before you jump all over me with the banal “..but but Living Story” and “Why do you still play?” replies let me point out: that doesn’t answer the question.

Where are we and where are we headed?

we dont know if we’re getting an expansion or not, they’re not saying anything either way.

also some corrections… Diablo is not really an MMO and their only revenue stream is expansions.

Also as far as I know and I am pretty sure about it but please feel free to correct me if I am wrong most of the games you mentioned, mainly ESO, Wildstar and Archeage have so far not announced any expansions at all.

Its not so much an expansion as it is expansion like content. Anet has promised things from the LS, many things that have not been delivered? What would an LS with expansion like content look like?

First, an ideal expansion would have -

New zones(say 4), New content for the places like fractals/dungeon/guildmissions, a New Class or Race(preferrably Class imo), New world bosses would be interesting, New skills(utilities for the first expansion), A new weapon combination for each class(thieves get axe, ele gets shortbow, ranger gets rifle, etc).

This would be the content side of things. The featues(big features like april feature pack but still bigger features could be done like guidl halls) are for the feature pack which would rotate with the living story.

Ideally, the living story lasts 12 releases(6 months of releases) over the period of 1 year. They would have 1 break that wouldn’t last 3 months long. This means we’d have 6 releases on each side of the break, so all the expansion content I mentioned would span that time period.

As for the break, I hate breaks yet if you want a feature/content cycle, there needs to be one. Also I think holidays/wvw seasons are not and will never be a valid excuse. Like I said, if thats true, then its going to really screw up your content schedule. Anyway, as for the break, I think 2 months is a very reasonable period of time if the content cycles each time had a few more releases and actually provided more content.

The problem with this break is that the break is too long for the amount of content we got. Tbh we didn’t get that much content the first time around. We’ve seen bits of expansions, but not a living story cycle that continuously pumps out prepared expansion like content.

The first release of the second season was the biggest release they had BY FAR. That should be par for every release. Im not saying every release needs a zone but something on par with that amount of effort or around there is ideal.

Precisely. The best example here is pretty much any campaing/expansion that was added to GW1.
Each one of them added 2 x more than what the whole 2 years of GW2 added. Not to mention, quality wise, the new content was superior, too.
That’s pretty much what it is all about.

The majority of the posters, if unsatisfied, simply post their concerns and/alternative solutions here.

GW2 is full of issues and unsatisfying solutions, hence the grievances, which somestimes, however, are properly dealth with by the devs.

That’s how it is supposed to work.

The fact that for the past year+ there have been more complaints rather than appraisals on the forums is precisely because of what I have mentioned above: plenty of unresolved issues and unheard solutions and so on.

A massive variable for the current state of the forums is that the community was ignored for a half year. That built up a lot of steam that simple communication could have fixed. Unfortunately, there is still frustration even though there is the sudden “all hands on deck” show due to their self-imposed policy of non-communication. The community can now talk..but only about certain things. And management can answer..within self-imposed parameters.

And, even though that is going on, there are still long-standing issues that remain unresolved and aren’t being talked about, like Traits. Yes, Chris acknowledged it and sent Jon over there to say something. However, all he asked for was more feedback, even though there was 4 months of highly detailed feedback there. It doesn’t build confidence in their communication system, or gain them credibility that in their assertions that they “read and listen”. Rather, it builds more frustration and reinforces the distrust that has been building since early in the year.

So (to the OP), the solution to having your community drop the torches and pitchforks is to be pro-active so they don’t have a reason to riot in the first place.

Exactly. That is why I said that the reason is the “unheard and unresolved issues”, which as you stated correctly, were neglected by the devs.

If you think the forums are supposed to look like they did when patch 9/9 came out then that is a very ugly reality you live. 9/9 patch showed the people who really care about the game and the QQ/Rage people who wanted to destroy this community by “Hey everyone BURN IT TO THE GROUND!” or “LEAVE EVERYONE LEAVE!!” Constructive criticism is one thing blind rage because things aren’t the way you wanted is something completely different. LOL heck how many people complained hey we can’t die in beginning zone lol well yeah that has been in place since launch of game but sometimes people would rather talk poop then anything else.

The only person who is raging atm is you. I suggest you calm down.

The forums will always be full of both HATERS and WHITE KNIGHTS, and atm I could name you a couple of old players in both of these groups right away, who still post here regularly.

It is just the way it is, and let’s face it, the recent changes were, to say the least, terribly researched prior to implementing.

Lol how am I raging? And no if your argument is to defend peoples “right” to be rude your mistaken. You go to court you have to be respectful having an opinion and having manners and self control are two different things. If you scream and yell and call the judge or anyone names you get kicked thats how it works in a civilized society.

No, I’m stating that there are two different groups of people here: HATERS ( the ones you seem to be focusing on, who are rude, disrespectful and so on ) and WHITE KNIGHTS ( who, even if completely aware of the issues, will always defend the game, hence inhibiting the healthy constructive criticism, and who also are rude, disrespectful and so on ). Hence, what we have here is INFRACTION SYSTEM, which, imo, works “not bad”.

What I’m saying to you is this: you will never get rid of such people, never. You will tame the behaviour, limit their presence, but you’ll never eradicate the negative behaviour.

That’s all, no need to dwell on this further.

Don’t expect the level of complexity that you had in GW1 here, in GW2. It’s just different times, I’m afraid. Everything gets dumbed down nowadays.

Content Please

I don’t at all hate the new season of the LW, and I actually like some of the game system changes that have taken place lately, but the pace of content releases is still egregiously slow and that is certainly one of the biggest reasons this game has hemorrhaged players.

In 2 years there has been 0 new weapon types, 0 new classes, 0 new races, 0 new game modes (unless you count SAB), very few new skills, 1.5ish zone maps, 1 large dungeon, a bunch of paid cosmetics, and some temp content.

I know there’s been a lot of miscellaneous stuff, mostly minor and bundled with the LW, but still – that’s pathetic. That’s significantly less new content than most totally free MMOs that are less successful than GW2 see in the same time period.

What is going on here, exactly? The #1 way you attract and retain players is by generating hype. The #1 way to generate hype is to talk about your plans in advance, and to release major content updates frequently. Most people don’t care as much about story as they do about having new stuff to play around with. This game desperately needs an expansion or to have much bigger content patches than it has been getting, pronto. The 2nd most desperate thing it needs is more consistent interaction between designers and players.

Your source of the game having lost players is…? People have been saying that this game is losing players since the Lost Shores launched back in November of 2012. If it’s bleeding players so badly, then why hasn’t the game gone under yet, and why does the game continue to feel more and more populated as time goes by? Even with the megaserver change I’ve noticed sharp increases in the number of players I encounter, and those increases are taking place long after megaservers were introduced.

Not to mention, I’ve routinely felt increases in player population. While there was a period around 2013 where the population seemed to decline, it has steadily gone up since. And if you’re going to cite anet’s revenue, that has more to do with the fact a large number of potential customers have already bought the game and many play the game for free after buying it, which is perfectly okay.

To answer your main point though, there has been a lot of added content just as a previous poster stated right above me, but a lot of it was temporary. I’m pretty sure that once season 2 is up and we’re rolling on to season 3 and season 4 and so forth, the content will begin to pile up. Also, there was a recent interview I believe where ArenaNet vaguely hinted that their goal was to add new maps as part of living world and make that more of a primary focus than it was in season 1.

(Note: I interpreted it as a vague hint, but nobody in the gaming press seemed to catch it. So keep in mind I just interpreted the article as them hinting at that, so take what I say with a grain of salt if you must.)

Heck, the “Season 2 will be returning!” literally shows a portal in-front of the gate to Fort Vandal. (Although the website glitched for me recently, I still remember what the image looked like.)

On the one hand, you demand the source for the decreasing number of players ( you argue that the continuous revenue drop of GW2 doesn’t support the claim, which is wrong on your part, obviously ) but at the same time your “best argument” for the increasing number of players is that “you feel the population grows”. Wow, that’s some terrible logic on your part. I’m surprised people even bother writing such funny comments.
