Earlier in this thread I mentioned you can’t blame someone too much for wanting a better PUG group due to the high costs of repair. The thought being if you form a better group there should be less deaths and smaller repair bills.

That thought does not offer any solutions of which I did not have any decent suggestions for at the time.

There is a small adjustment that could be made that would solve this for just about everyone. Get those people who want to do a gear check or find out your achievement scores to say so in advance. That would save them having to ask you after you are partied or just about to enter the instance.

It is a simple courtesy that those of you who want these types of requirements to be met before you do a dungeon run is to say so in advance so that you don’t waste other peoples time only to find out they aren’t the level or geared that you expected to have in your party.

Your gaming background? Love/hate GW2?

My gaming goes back to the mid 80’s. (Yes I am an old fart.) Ultima series on an Apple IIE for example, I ran my own BBS before the general public had internet. I remember 1200 baud modems when they were a speedy beast.

With MMO’s Ultima Online was my 1st where I maintained 10 accounts for about 8 years, WoW, LOTRO, GW, AoC, DDO, AoE Online, toyed with a few others and now GW2.

I no longer think of just one MMO as having to be my only MMO. I no longer understand those who demand that type of dedication along with the thinking every other MMO is the enemy.

If you are having fun and have the time to play something then do it. If the reality parts of your life are suffering or any game is no longer fun then maybe you should do a rethink. It is only a game after all.

I just wanted to add one point to the discussion.

As much as I agree with the OP about players who appear elitist, the game design is partly at fault here.

When I see complaints about this I agree, but can’t complain much. The reason being is this game maintains a high gear repair cost. When you have high repair costs then people have good reason to require better gear or better (Higher skills opened) players. Another example is gear gauges. I don’t condone those who want a gear gauge implemented in the game but with high gear repair costs I understand why they might want it.

I can only say there are PUGS who are less demanding than your examples and lots of guilds are setup without those restrictions. If there are none on your server maybe you should consider switching, because there are lots of people who are in the same space as you are wanting to do content but finding it difficult to do it.

To be honest I am more concerned about the long cooldowns of my slotted skills rather than the damage output of my auto attack.

To OP when you complain that other skills do not have the damage output of your auto attack the usual correction MMO’s seem to make(If they make a correction) would be to decrease your auto attack rather than increase your slotted skill damage.

or put slightly differently:

Be careful what you wish/lobby for.

Not sure why this makes players so angry, it’s a simple formula. I’ll just rehash my last discussion about this to save time.

It’s massive. It’s multiplayer. But it’s not massively multiplayer. By your own definition it’s not an mmo because it’s not a persistent world. Persistent, in a game context, means the game world persists after you log off. gw1 doesn’t do that because there’s no need to…it’s only you and your party in the zone.

Besides, that little “ly” at the end of massive may make it look like an adverb, but it’s really an adjective describing “multiplayer.” And if something is massively multiplayer, then it has hundreds of people inhabiting the same world at the same time.

Now if you want to point to the towns in gw1 as your evidence, well that is your prerogative. I doubt any gamer worth his weight in Doritoes would count 1% of the game, and a non-combat part at that, as evidence for this.

Not sure why this keeps coming up. I mean, I left gw1 because I wanted to play an mmo.

True story: I typed in “coorpg” in my search engine and the first hit was an article about how gw1 isn’t an mmo. Typing in “guild wars mmo” just gave a ton of stuff on this game. :/

All 3 major releases of GW1 had large starting areas that were persistent worlds. You could leave the towns and find lots of people fighting mobs.

It is extremely difficult for any MMO to have its entire world one persistent world because of technology limitations mostly on the user end. That is why the flavor of most MMO’s lately is to instance content when certain population limits have been reached.

Those of you complaining Rangers have bad shouts I disagree. There is nothing wrong with Battle Roar at all. While it may be slightly weak for solo play, it borders on overpowered because of its 1200 radius that buffs everyone with +20% crit chance for 6.5 Secs plus a decent Might buff(60Pwr/60Cond Dmg) for 16.5 secs.

Unofficial Leveling Servers

DirtyDeeds.6075

First off, there really doesnt need to be any official or unofficial leveling server. If you do that why not make an unofficial crafting server or unofficial armorsmithing server (see where I am going?).

Not really. You don’t gain any benefit to crafting by having a more populated server. But DEs are hard to find when there is less population.

After guesting there shouldn’t be a problem, so I only offered suggestions to help your low population server problem.

It appears to me you don’t want help with your problem but rather just want people to accept your idea. If that is the case I wouldn’t utilize a designated leveling server because on my server we don’t have that need.

Perhaps you’re right. I thought it would be a widely accepted idea and I’m wrong about that, I guess, because low population servers aren’t a problem for many.

So after guesting turns on, do you have a suggestion for a server that will have a higher population for alt-leveling? Because my server isn’t it.

The benefit to having a crafting server that is more populated would be more customers to buy the stuff you are crafting. The flip side is that you would also likely have more competition crafting those items.

I looked at your server and my server (Sorrows Furnace) and they are both listed as high atm. I would suggest you ask around on forums or pay attention to the server populations during the times you play to pick one that is likely busier.

I put my Guardian into a guild that does regular dungeon runs each evening. It seems to work for him and he is leveling at a nice steady pace. The guild is large enough that it has mostly different people each night. That eliminated the always the same people each night have to wait on someone to get going on time problems.

Despite what you think you see, no server is empty. If it was empty ANet would shut it down.

Until they start up guesting you have options:

Fair enough. Now what about after guesting? We don’t need to self-limit the usefulness of guesting. I really want to know why my idea is bad, and why nobody is interested. If you’re level 80 and you haven’t spent much time lately in middle-zones, you may not understand.

I didn’t say your idea was a bad one. Others have stated why they thought is wasn’t a particularly good one.

I have 8 slots with many Alts and am questing a lot in middle level zones. I only have 1x level 80. Most are mid 20-high 40’s.

I don’t see a need for your suggestion because most zones on my server aren’t close to being empty.

After guesting there shouldn’t be a problem, so I only offered suggestions to help your low population server problem.

Your server may have a smaller population but I repeat it is not empty.

Until they start up guesting you have options:

1. Find out what times your server is busy and play during those times.
2. Find a few friends who play at the same time as you and are similar levels as you and group up.
3. Join a large guild that has people online, when you are online.
4. Switch servers to one that is more populated at similar times you play.

Times change and so does each generation of MMO gamers.

The needs and wants of this generation is altogether different from the Early UO days when I first started playing MMO’s.

This generation thinks that it is acceptable to use cheat codes and god modes because the games they played allowed them those luxuries. It is little wonder to me that there are gamers who don’t have the time to farm or level and prefer to take the easy route and buy it elsewhere from some sweatshop in china or where ever.

Consider what happened to Diablo 3.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Reaching the end of this game, i’ve realized that Anet has done worse than Blizzard’s Diablo 3 in terms of loot.

I could care less what loot here is like, compared to Diablo 3. I am not having a problem making enough loot in GW2, so who cares about the other game? If you prefer their loot drops go play that game.

I can spend all day doing dungeons and farming and find nothing worth any value. Even blizzard notice that having a end game with low drop chance on items is a bad game design.

If you can’t make money doing dungeons, and making money is important to you {insert drum roll here} ……… then stop doing dungeons. Who cares what Blizzard thinks?

Spending large amounts of time attempting to hunt items with no avail is turning me further and further away from the game…

I can’t say anything more than what has been said in other threads before. Some people want stuff handed to them on a silver platter with little effort and lots of people want to just farm for days and days doing the same stuff over and over. It seems to me the that GW2 does not cater much to either of those types of players.

Maybe you could find another MMO that suits your vision of loot drops much better.

Please Help Me Understand....

Why Anet isn’t spending the time fixing bugs instead of focusing on a Halloween event on Oct. 22nd. Also why attention isn’t being focused elsewhere like the horrible DR system that is in place for loot/karma? While I’m glad the community is excited for the Halloween event and content, personally I’d rather have an improved game over an event that lasts for 9 days.

Don’t get me wrong I love this game and am spending a great amount of time on it but I’d just like GW2 to be cleaned up as soon as possible. THEN we can have these great events worry free from annoying bugs.

Any thoughts? Or am I just being cynical?

The people that create new content are not the same people who fix bugs. They can’t stop adding content like the Halloween stuff because they would have too many people complaining about a lack of new content.

They already do a fine job of fixing bugs. It is a never ending, difficult, time consuming, thankless job that doesn’t bring in new players. Many other MMO’s don’t put near the same effort into that area as the GW2 team does.

Sunday morning: Two hours in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DirtyDeeds.6075

While Sam the OP makes some fair points, most don’t hold true for me and my server.

1. I was sleeping at 730AM on Sunday so will not comment on what my server(Sorrows Furnace) was doing at that time. It has been busy most days be it weekends or weekday mornings.

2. Most DE’s are not that difficult to solo. I have 1 of each class and only run into a handfull that can’t be solo’d. I haven’t done them all, because even my lvl 80 Ranger is only 45% or so map completion. I am sure there are a few more that need a group to complete.

3. Why do people have to call everyone like me who don’t agree with complainers “Fanboys”? I do my share of complaining here and I don’t agree with what the OP is complaining about.

So my suggestions Sam are to follow one of the suggestions that many have mentioned already.

If your guilds are dead then find a new guild that isn’t dead. At the same time you are joining ask them how busy they are at times you play so you don’t get into another “My guild is dead at the times I play” situation again.

If you can’t find a guild on your server that fits then you are going to have to consider changing servers. If it comes to that then do it while the transfer is still free or you will have something new to complain about.

If you are really having difficulty with most DE’s solo then I can only suggest you look at your gear, look at your skill setup and do some research. You can keep your repair costs down by picking at the edges and kiting more on the difficult ones. Even if it fails you still gain some exp and Karma from it. Focus more on not dying.

Good Luck Sam, hope things work out for you a bit better.

Incidentally, flamethrower kit is awful. If I see a “flamethrower engy” on our PUG member in a serious dungeon they better be packing some REALLY good gear to get their damage up or they get booted at the door and then nobody can complain it happened unfairly.

Speaking as an engy, if you’re relying on flame-thrower kit for doing all your damage, you are doing it WRONG in every way possible; you’re a dis-service to your team (Engy’s have an amazing array of control and support skills) and you’re a disservice to yourself (you’re failing to reach your damage/survivability potential by a long shot), if you arn’t going to pull your weight in a dungeon then someone else is carrying you and I’m not surprised if they say “no”

If you pulled this stunt in any of the groups I was in you would be looking for 2 replacements instead of 1 replacement for the engineer.

The whole attitude that your gear is wrong or your spec is wrong doesn’t fit this game well at all.

You won’t have many willing to help your groups once word gets around. Its the attitude that will hurt your groups in the long run more than anyones spec on how they play their characters.

Apparently I need to L2P

Over and above what the other posters have mentioned I will add a few points.

1. Don’t let your gear get too under leveled in this game. Update it often. When I find I am taking a lot of damage or seem a bit squishy, I look at my gear first.

2. Sometimes to spec for all damage is not your best friend. While a lot of power, precision and condition damage will help you kill things faster, sometimes you have to add some toughness(think damage mitigation) and vitality(more hit points) too.

3. As others have said learn to dodge. (Default is"V") use it often and try to get used to it.

4. Pay attention to boss mobs in particular. Most will give indications of casting or using a big damage skill before they actually use it. (ie the giants stomp) When you are at a stage where you can recognize that you might be in the target of a big damage skill then you usually have time to make distance or dodge away from it.

I don’t mean to be a smart kitten or anything, but I was wondering, is complaining like this standard procedure on mmo forums?

I personally think the game is pretty good. I agree it has problems, but it was released 2 months ago, so I’m keeping my hopes up that a lot of them will be fixed.

I was playing in the game and was talking to people in map chat and I caught somebody saying that the only reason people go to the forums is to complain, so I’m kind of curious. Is this true, or are the forums a good way of judging the thoughts of the community as a whole?

Yes there are only a few civil MMO forums.

I remember the UO forums had so many complainers they made the decision to just shut them down. Didn’t need the hassle of babysitting a bunch of complaining whiners.

-He wanted it for the extra bank space.
-He likes the WvW buffs he can give out.
-Guilds can train for banners which give out buffs too. Want to give your guild an edge going into that dungeon? Drop some banner buffs for them.

There is more, like a guild chat that allows you to find help when you just can’t get past that Champion mob when you are nearly alone in a zone. Or finding that crafter who is willing to craft you the item you need for mats instead of your arm, leg and first born that most AH sellers seem to ask for any decent item.

Perfect for fast paced AND tactical gameplay.
This class IS FEARED in 1 v 1, and in larger battles, if you are in danger, you can stealth out of it, allowing you to prepare some deadly AoEs and traps.

The Rogue skills may not have a cooldown but they use initiative which prevents you spamming any of them except# 1 which builds it with auto hits.

There are Banks in every City, as well as being accessable via the Crafting stations. Anything you place in there (appart from soulbound gear) can be pulled out by other characters.
You can also deposit and withdraw money (gold, silver etc), but not via the Crafting stations – just the Banks.

The bank tab access in a crafting station is identical to the regular bank access. You can make money deposits and withdrawals, along with withdrawing or depositing any item not bound to another character.

Gather everything, everywhere you go. Auction everything not associated with your chosen craft. Sell at the lowest competitors asking price and it should sell within minutes.

From a recent thread in this same forums:

Huge Queues that run 24 hours day.
Recent influx of W3 guilds (NA and Asia/Pacific regions)
We win by night capping, were not good at W3
75% of our commanders are useless with good for nothing stratergies (where good at zerging)
Absolutely no coordination
Personally waited 3 hours tonight to get into EB which we owned the entire map for the entire time. That wasnt because were good either, the enemy has given up due to our nightcapping so we have no competition.

Huh? No MMO is ever “done” until they close the doors or stop adding content.

The done you are talking about is ready for release when they feel it is ready. Like any all software there are bugs.

The content here is easily as comparable or better than any other MMO I have experienced, and I go back to the 90’s with UO. I have Beta tested and opened WoW, GW1, LOTRO, AoC. None were without bugs or faults and I don’t remember any having substantially more content.

I don’t think that would fix anything. It’d end up the same even if there were 1000 crafts with unique recipes and you could only ever learn 1 per account. Say you pick “Bag Making”. Only you and 2000 other people have chosen “Bag Making”. You Bag Makers make bags with cloth. Competition will ensure that cloth will never sell for less than the cost of making a bag and bags will never sell for more than their cost.

I will let my “Cat out of the bat” so to speak. I happen to make bags and make a little money per bag(2-10s/per). I no longer have free collected resources to work with so I buy them off the trader and then craft them up.

I hear what the OP is saying but he sounds like he hasn’t done a lot of crafting to make money. I suspect he just followed some level up your crafting by discovery methods mentioned all over the place. Yes if you do it that way, you will find that what you make doesn’t sell and costs a fortune to make.

My Armorsmith makes some heavy armor that sells really well. I don’t make it until I check the AH first to see if the selling price will cover my costs plus listing+selling fees. For some reason my leatherworker has only a handful of items that seem to make money for each material upgrade.

Guardians are easily the easiest class of all to optimize for the playstyle you prefer. It can also makes that class one of the more difficult classes to “play well”.

I am not finding the same thing as you.

Sorrows Furnace is quite busy especially on the 1-25 level areas and the 65-80 areas, so you can’t probably make the same assumption about all other servers. I worked my mid 30’s Necro up to lvl 43 yesterday and my server was busy in multiple zones. Not release busy but people everywhere.

If your server is as empty as you claim, change servers to a more populated one while it is still free.

While my Alt Elementalist is only mid 20’s. I have rarely had any problems doing skill points solo and I don’t use mistfire wolf or Glyph of elementals very much if at all. Then again when I start a skill point solo, one or more usually show up before I finish it.

Any time I seem to find content like that more difficult, it is usually my gear needs upgrading.

Why are a lot of gamers unsociable?

I was going to start a separate thread about this but I guess this will do here. Luring is unsociable to the utmost degree.

The past couple days I have run into a few players who have no want to group or even help you with Events.

Like today I was solo escorting a small child out of a quite populated cave and fighting along the way. Some hunter came running past into the cave with multiple mobs in tow, only to detour through my ranged fire so I would pick up his agro. He continued on, I am going to assume to do his mining or whatever. Then came back the other way and didn’t bother to stop to do the escort or help.

I think the only thing this game needs is more group goals with group rewards. What I mean is something like a guild hall you can collectively work towards with your guild. If you don’t like grouping up then you won’t be missing out as the reward itself is a group reward and not an individual reward like a skin. The problem is when either you feel forced to do group activities for individual rewards, or when you want to do group activities and there is nothing collectively to work for.

I hear you and well said. Over in DDO when a guild puts together enough to get their ship they go about their business of outfitting it with special crafting centers or ambassadors who buff you. Nice to know when you get ready for that dungeon crawl and your whole group can go get some nice buffs that last about 1 hour.

Mystic Forge - What a waste !!!!

The definition of stupid is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Actually that is the definition of insanity… But we get your point

No, that’s Einstein’s definition of insanity. Also, it doesn’t apply here.

The Mystic Forge is just another mechanic to make you grind more gold and mats. Yeah, random numbers suck when they don’t roll in our favor, but random numbers are random. Oh, well.

While many people like to quote that Einstein actually said that phrase, the truth is he likely did not.

The more likely person to first quote it is said to be mystery writer Rita Mae Brown.

Einstein or not it is not true from the pure definition of insanity.

The countless hours of “practice” (doing the same thing over and over) that world class athletes go through to get better results, proves exactly how wrong the expression can be.

My apologies OP as I did not intend to derail this thread however those who need further clarification can find it here:

It seems to be working well from my view !!

I was one of the more vocal and first to complain about Gold Seller Spam. I got a forum warning about one of my threads on that topic.

So today I would like to give credit where due. I see positive results on my end. In the past week and a bit I have seen one ingame mail advert where before I was getting 5+ a day. In the past week and a half I have seen only 2 Gold Seller spams both in LA.

Kudos on the Gold Spammer Effort ANet as I am quite happy with what I am seeing not seeing.

Can "Armor" please be separated into Light, Medium and Heavy Armor categories?

Doesn’t bother me much anymore. You get to know the names and the icon differences.

Until they grace you with your requested change, you can mouse over the armor and if you do not see the armor you are wearing pop-up beside the one you are looking at, you will know it is the wrong type.

Placing Orders needs to be reworked.

Offer a reasonable price to begin with and wait. Offering 1c over the highest bid is not the best way to get your item.

If you are trying to max your Nickel and Diming you can expect to be Nickel and Dimed back.
