Hey ranger community!
With the 1 elite spec beta weekend we had so far and about 3 weeks until release I thought it is the right time to give some feedback on the core concept of Soulbeast. Basically: What feels good? What would make more sense if done different?
I don’t want to go into detail about specific balance changes here that could be fixed b changing numbers.
So let’s start:
1. You can now swap pets in beast mode with shared cooldown when unmerged.
This one is pretty obvious and a much asked feature. The current implementation feels extremly clunky and ruins the flow of the spec. “But Dojo, Arenanet doesn’t want people to camp beast mode!” I aknowledge that but I think it should be achieved in a different way (as explained further below)
2. Your F1/2 are now ‘beast’ skills. Your F3 is no longer a ‘beast’ skill.
Obviously a buff since this will allow to proc accociated traits much more often. Some of the traits will need a second look at their internal cooldown due to that but I still think this is much more consistent and logical. Also it might actually encourage you to use some of the low cooldown F1 skills to specifically proc the traits. These skills alone often feel underwhelming at the moment.
3. Remove the ‘End beast mode’ button.
“What? How do we leave beast mode?” Easy, keep reading.
4. The F3 skill now unmerges you from your pet along with what it does right now.
This is my answer to stop people from camping beast mode. These skills are very strong, even if situational, and because of that feel perfect to make them kind of an ultimate spell that consumes all the energy unmerging you with your pet. Want to use these very powerful skills? Well then you have to unmerge for 10 seconds which actually allows you to use the normal pet F2 etc. This has flavor and makes sense from a gameplay perspective. Once you unmerged there is the usual timer of 10 seconds until you can merge again.
Some additional input:
There obviously could be alterations to this system like creating a trait that wont end beast mode on F3 use for people that actually want to camp beast mode (keep the end beast mode button) but this is Arenanets decision to make.
Another missed opportunity in my opinion is not having a trait that allows you to move to your pets position when entering beast mode. This would create some really interesting gameplay for ranger.
(edited by Dojo.1867)
Try that weird snake pet. Massive condis on that if you merge on low cooldowns.
Dagger is not better than what we have already but soulbeast is a huge improvement imo because those pet abilities really can shine.
I expect some changes/buffs to dagger MH. Right now I will stick to sword for condi specs in PvP and second option will be shortbow anyway.
I’d just like Essence of Speed to give 33% movement speed while in beastmode.
The problem with that is you can already get 25% movement speed in beastmode from beastmaster traitline, so I think its unlikely unless they change that also.
There are so many things need changing with soulbeast and only a month to do it in, tbh I think it’s going to be unfinished at release.
The problems with Beastmastery Pet Prowess:
- It’s only 25% movement speed
- It limits choice by locking you into 2 trait lines (Soulbeast and Beastmastery)
- Beastmastery GM traits are all useless while in Beastmode (which you need to be in to get the passive speed boost)
- It can’t compete with Druid Natural Stride
I mean do we really have problems to obtain perma swiftness nowadays? Personally I think + movementspeed traits are a waste of space.
I don’t think there would be anything wrong with removing the ICD of Essence of Speed.
I really like them. What I dislike are more the adept/grandmaster traits.
Especially Predator’s Cunning feels great and heals for a ton in the right build. Judging from this thread most people lack the ability to test stuff properly. It actually heals almost 5k with a single Viper’s Nest (given that you hit 3 targets with 3 ticks but that isn’t that craszy hard on point). Just doing stuff like sword 3 and dagger 4 or shortbow 2 will still give you about 1k hp. This trait is good.
From average pvp levels onwards, there are basically no situations in which 3 people stand in your vipers nest. Condi ranger is a 1v1’er for pvp.
Not 3 people but 2 people, 3 clones, a pet. It isn’t that hard to get 3 ticks on multiple targets – I am not saying you will heal the full 4.5k everytime you use Viper’s nest but even getting 4 or 5 target hits out of the 3 ticks it will be 2-3k heal. This is one skill. Sword/dagger add multiple stacks and so does SB. This adds up.
And I think it is absolutely enough if a trait CAN be good in specific builds. There are plenty of traits that are always kitten so I don’t get why we complain about stuff that can be efficient when used wisely.
While Holosmith has a smooth transition into Photon Forge (lulburst) and always-available utilities that interact with the F-bar mechanic…
Soulbeast has to manage pet swap and beastmode separately and it’s extremely clunky. Not to mention most of the melded skills don’t have any meaningful impact, with the Beast abilities having awkward animation locks or extremely long CDs.
We might need a smoother mechanic. Don’t want to fight my UI while I’m fighting people already.
Off topic, is Condi the only way to go for Soulbeast?
Most likely I haven’t figured out how to boonstack/use pet traits like the spec suggest yet, maybe that’s the new way to play Ranger.
Cant talk much about PvE but power got a lot of tools. Improved Maul is amazing. Sic em is a crazy damage buff. Free quickness/fury. With all that increased melee damage I wonder if Paladin is the best PvP stats now for a power build.
You can pretty much guarantee 99.99% that Maul applying it’s own AoO strike and Sic Em @ +40% will be nerfed man, seriously.
Why? I think there is a chance it stays. I don’t think they will change Maul. Sic’em will propably be adapted toonly giving 30% or something like that to Soulbeast.
Ok, because this.
Damage = (Weapon strength * Power * Skill coefficient) / Armor
GS midpoint for damage = 1047.5
Power main stat with runes and food = 2784
Maul Co-efficient = 1.75
Let’s assume 2500 armor.(1047.5 × 2784 × 1.75) / 2500 = 2041 damage.
Then add in the multipliers you can stack. Total multiplication will be Steady Focus 1 × 1.1 = 1.1. Remorseless 1.1 × 1.25 = 1.375. Critical Damage 1.375 × 2.5 = 3.47. Furious Strength 3.475 × 1.07 = 3.67. Twice as Vicious 3.67 × 1.05 = 3.86. Oppresive Superiority 3.86 × 1.1 = 4.24.
So that damage has gone up to 8655.40 now already. Then add in AoO.
4.24 × 1.5 = 6.36
2041.368 × 6.36 = 12983.10Now add 40% Sic Em.
6.36 × 1.4 = 8.904
2041.368 × 8.904 = 18176.34 damage on a target with 2500 armor. From a single attack you can land 3 times every Sic Em duration. I didn’t even include 2HT or the additional stats from beastmode or beastmastery. If you did that to a light armor target, it would be 23101.60 damage in a single hit. Rapid Fire will do 30k plus, easily.
TLDR; As much as I like it, it’s crazy OP. Nothing that can do that much damage is good for the game.
One trick pony claculations like this were always possible and never good. You will never connect a full rapid fire like that. Your build will be squishy, etc.
Like I said I anticipate a nerf to 30% or something like that but it isn’t that strong. SB needs to pull its weight in terms of dps to compete with druid. Maul is a well telegraphed skill (melee on top of that) and so is rapid fire so there is a lot of counter play.
Okay the more I play this beta weekend the more I think we have to be able to swap pets while in beastmode. The current implementation really ruins the flow of fighting.
If they really want to force us out of beastmode I suggest linking this to the beast skill instead (F3). These are really powerfull and could be used as “finishers” for beastmode and after casting you are unmerged and have to wait 10 sec to enter beastmode again.
I would prefer if they just added the swap but if they really want us to leave beast mode from time to time this would still be fine for me.

If I was in charge of a rework.
Dagger 1: First attack now has 600 range. If it hits in melee range the full chain is resumed.
Dagger 2: Now says ‘Instantly reset this skill if you hit more than 2 enemies’.
Dagger 3: Slightly more range or slightly less cooldown.
Dagger 4: This is fine.
Dagger 5: Ammo system with 3 charges.
Signed.
The whole point of Soulbeast is to merge with your pet so why force us to unmerge? People that want that can play core ranger or druid. The point of elite specs – an I quote Arenanet here – is to open up new playstyles that the class did’t have before.
Pet Swap while merged
I really really want to be able to swap pet while merged. Not being able to do this borderline ruins the spec for me.
It is not about being lazy to micro but it just isn’t good design at the moment being in weird cooldown locks to access certain skills. This would also make traits like QZ less waisted while in soulbeast. I don’t care if you link this to a trait or just add the pet swapping baseline but it has to happen.
Soulbeast was all about merging with your pet so I don’t get why you force us to play with pet anyway. It feels really awkward to get from merged pet A to merged pet B. Please Arenanet fix this.
Dagger
As a PvPer I actually think dagger MH is lackluster and S/D just feels superior. The only good part of Dagger MH is the #3 – auto and #2 both don’t really do much except some hybrid dmg application.
Stances
Stances feel mostly underwhelming due to low duration. The effects really aren’t strong enough for the casting time and those few seconds. Main culbrits here are gryphon and vulpture but also for some other I would prefer longer duration even if you skale them down a bit in exchange.
Beast Skills
I like the F3 but F1 and 2 have an extreme variance and are the most unbalanced aspect of SB atm. Most of them are bad (especially the F1, they mostly are just simple direct dmg and weaker than a generic autoattack while having longer animation times, these need to be scaled up a lot). There are some good ones, mostly on the new pets and HOT pets (hi smoke assault).
Traits
I only really dislike that +10% dmg GM since it feels extremely boring to me but guess once you show something like that to PvErs you cannot take it away anymore… The adept traits should propably also work when leaving beast mode or be merged but in general the ideas are decent. This kind of stuff is hard to judge though before the swapping pet while merged fix I mentioned because this will significantly alter the way SB plays.
When will anet realize, that amulets are not the (main) issue?
As mentioned in the OP, there will be a few balance changes coming next week as well, but runes/sigils/amulets are one of the things the PvP team can change on our own without impacting the rest of the game. To be clear: the PvP team, just like fractals/raids/wvw/etc, does not handle profession balance – there is a separate team for that.
How can you expect PvP balance to ever become good with a system like that? This is beyond my understanding.
Moa should have Distortion in that case.
Ranger was made competitive via druid. It adds massive sustain, stunbreak and full condi clear for free basically. This is all stuff that is usually hard to fit into a build, druid just delivers it via an adept trait.
The obvious solution is taking some of that away from druid and adding it to core ranger. Astral force generation would have to be lower so that you cannot f5 literally every 10 seconds for stunbreak and full cleanse + massive heals. In exchange there should be much easier access do condi cleansing and sustain traits in core ranger. Right now you have to pick certain grandmasters and they don’t even do the job as good as druid adept.
Some efficient changes would be:
- finally add Empathic Bond to Beastmastery in exchange for the Axe trait for example, also make it transfer 1 condition every 5 seconds instead of 3 every 10.
- make healing spring more usable in PvP, it actually offers a lot utility witht the field and condi cleansing, it is just so weak heal per time that not even trap builds want to run a traited version, change that
- add small heals instead of regen (which we already get out of a million other sources) to warhorn trait ‘windborn notes’ (resistance might work too)
Stuff like that…
They could put a cap on it. Maybe 5 seconds per illusion shattered? It then reduces the cooldown of all skills to where it was at the start of continuum split but with a maximum.
So if you shattered 5 illusions via continuum split and then you use elite you will only get a 25s reduction.
The team comp that pulls this off efficiently is any comp with a decent mesmer and revenant which is pretty much any competitive team comp anyway. Experienced players will win the 2on1 consistently and fast enough to make it worth it.
Just 2on1 the druid once he popped SoS and SotP and he is an easy kill. Dies to any kind of burst/cc if he is out of invul/stab. Thieves and Revs are obviously best for this job because they can +1 fast as roaming classes and also have super high burst. If you +1 with a slow class that takes time to move across map and also takes more time to win the 2on1 then the druid generates too much value with the 1on2 he created.
Stop looking at how to counter classes purely from a dueling point of view. That is not how it works. A good meta build druid wont die in a duel, maybe some classes/builds can force a decap but that’s it. You need the +1.
Edit: Well mesmer can do it.
(edited by Dojo.1867)
I admit, using myself as an example for players that stop playing because of this idiotic ranked break was a mistake. Ofcourse nobody gives a kitten about what I do. Arenanet should give a kitten though because apparently I am not the only one thinking like that.
Just astonishing how you kids are too triggered by my “arrogance” to get what this post is about.
And how is it even arrogant if unranked feels like an absoute clowns show to me?
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Druid_-_Poison_Master
Check out this build I posted to metabattle. It is nothing new but the patch did help out sword and shortbow a bit. The changes aren’t gamebreaking but anyone saying that 2 sec stun/daze instead of 1 sec makes no difference has not much PvP experience. The rest were just slight damage buffs.
Personally I think that druid is too strong at the moment and staff is just a great weapon that happens to fill astral force (which is what makes druid so strong) the fastest on top of it.
About shortbow being generally bad? I strongly disagree for a number of reasons:
- pretty much the only ranged weapon with a condition aspect which will always make it the go to ranged option if a condition build can be good
- enough utility to be usefull in PvP, namely the dodge on relatively low cooldown and the cc on #5, one might argue that stealth and a knockback like on longbow are even better utility but there are situations where the dodge beats stealth (like if you want to keep a point)
In the end a slight buff to the autoattack wouldn’t have hurt but the weapon can be viable with the right meta changes. I would rather say it sees little play because druid is so good and not because short bow as a weapon is bad.
I actually complain here because I DO win 100% of my matches. Unranked is just boring and some people clearly should not be in the same game as me. This is why I stopped playing but whatever.
See this isn’t about me but about getting the message to arenanet that players will quit if they continue like that. But I guess I overestimated your smallish brain capacities to understand this simple relation.
What about Ranked do you want?
Is it standard models?
The type of matchmaking?
Is it the map selection? Now that the maps are updated, is this still an issue?
Do you want to climb the ladder until the the season resets? The ladder and match making would be nice.
I feel like 24/7 ladder would create a lot of burnout. Plus there wouldn’t be time for big balance patches to settle before the season starts.
Regarding matchmaking, it seems that two camps are developing. What about ranked matchmaking do you prefer over unranked?
Burnout agrument makes no sense at all. If you individually want to stop playing for a few weeks you can just do so and start ranking up later in the season. Is arenanet trying to tell players when they should take a break? Like how do you even come up with that?? Balance patches are usually flawed anyway. I would rather play ranked with broken balance until you can hotfix it than this unranked garbage.
I seriously cannot bear unranked. You make me quit. Said this last season (actually a huge part of the competitive scene did) and I don’t get how you changed nothing.
So if you don’t want to lose me as a player change your system Arenanet. I almost didn’t come back to the game after last off season. I did, soloqueued to legend, but if you change nothing I will be gone.
This is just unaccetable and ruins every competition. Bring ranked back as soon as possible. If this doesn’t work then your system is kitten and you should change it.
The problem I see in this thread is that on one side complete casuals are talking, on the other side competitive players. I see people mentioning here how they liked the knockback cheese on skyhammer while actually players like me never even had the chance to play skyhammer since it simply didn’t work for a ranked competitive game. The map was simply dysfunctional and more in the line of something like keg brawl or crab toss.
So the changes were VERY good. People like me might actually be able to play on skyhammer now.
Personally I also like spiritwatch but some people state they just dislike the general layout (well guess that is what map vote is for).
Edit: Biggest clowns here are PvE players complaining that they can no longer farm daylies on skyhammer. Really? That is a completely different level of boldness.
Did any of you guys ever succefully counter this by destroying the rift? This seems supposed to be Chronos weakness but it seems it doesn’t work at all. What could be done for this to actually allow some counterplay? How would you change this mechanic?
The direct damage buffs are good. SB is supposed to be a hybrid weapon so it made absolutely no sense that hitting all 5 poison volley projectiles barely reached the dmg of a single autoattack. I also think #5 got significantly improved by that.
The main problem is that druid/staff is just too kittening strong compared to core ranger and sb does not fit druid playstyle well since there are no real hybrid damage builds possible. Also pets still being the most of out dmg. I really was surprised they didn’t do a single change to old pets this patch. Do they think it is okay that we basically only have 2 or 3 pets to pick from for PvP?
It should be a net gain for PvP. Sure, we can’t ez mode auto attack during the right circumstances but now we can poke and prod in situations that formerly would have forced us into bad situations because of the previous animations. Overall this change should improved our sustain dps while doing little to affect what “burst” the previous animation sequence had.
Absolutely agree. All those people mentioning this would be good in PvE but bad for PvP … are they playing the same class?
Nobody really played sword for the autoattack chain. Sometimes the leap could come in handy but this was greatly overshadowed by disturbing free dodging. Since the skill already crippled you were able to keep up with targets once in melee range anyway. If they reall leaped/teleported away to create distance then the leap was too small ro reach them anyway.
TLDR: Sword in PvP was used for the double leap on #2, the evade on #3 and the fact that you could equip an offhand weapon like dagger or torch.
Honestly people are overrating the importance of the “gap closing” element of the leap. Often this could actually make you jump in a wrong direction. If enemies want to create distance they just use their own teleports/leaps/stealths anyway.
The skill already cripples. I am really curious what the new version does. Before we know the exact details threads like this one are pointless. I get that a small minority liked the old chain and you kept this change from happening years earlier. This is your win. Now accept Arenanets decision to finally change it.
Loving it. Ofcourse I want to know the skills before I make a judgement but everything that allows free movement is already so much better than the current version.
This is ridiculous but I doubt Arenanet is competent enough to handle this in a way that brings you any damage reduction.
Sorry this happened to you guys.
This is what we should do. This company proves again and again that they aren’t willing to invest the resources that are necessary to sustain a PvP game. They released absolutely overtuned new content into a competitive environment and they even keep it like that for half a year.
It is outrageous how broken the state of elite specs is since months for some pseudo reasons. I expect a major split of PvP/PvE skills and a huge patchlog. Otherwise I am out. Like most other people I already kind of play on standby mode and I am about to turn off the game compeltely.
This is pathetic mismanagement. It is like they lack the basic understanding of how to support a competitive game. I don’t blame the so called “pvp class balance” team that actually does what it does as some small sidequest. I blame the higher ups that decide to adress the existing resources in that bad bad way. If anything then Karl, Roy and whoever is left on the “balancing team” don’t have the balls to speak up again this bullkitten.
He says in the vid why he does not run these. Because they reveal him if the proc on Hunter’s Shot. This is why I think Force would be the best choice for him.
And to clarify my other post. I would actually run LB + Staff, not Staff + S/D.
(edited by Dojo.1867)
Some feedback from a fellow legend ranger:
I was running a similiar build, only Marauder though and I think not running staff is a mistake. Why not get that free ranged pressure in when they have reflects up? Why not have a significantly easier time vs evade/aegis spamming classes that LB just has trouble to hit with auto. There are many situations where staff applies more damage pressure more reliably than LB. Staff also has an evade and can bring huge distance between you and the enemy. Those small healticks it gives will help with AF generation basically giving you an additional utility slot since you don’ need Signet of the Wild.
On Longbow I would use Sigil of Force over Accuracy in your case since with your stats this will result in more damage.
A bad mesmer is also bad btw.
Well you click your skills and really are playing on a super low skill floor. Yet you make threads claiming you are in MMR hell.
You really really should not be any higher with the way you play right now. First thing you should learn is use proper hotkey control and stop clicking skills via mouse. Post an update once you achieved this and I will give further feedback. Not playing much mesmer though.
Sure she should be lower then she is now, that’s why she in MMR hell. System doesn’t allow her to fall.
So i yet fail to see to see how your comments are connected to this thread when everyone in d3 are equal trash in comparison to each other.
She actually believes she should be higher by now but “MMR hell” prevents her from climbing. She posted such a thread about once a day in the past couple of weeks. I don’t support people trashtalking her ingame but the whole thing kind of showed how most people believing MMR hell keeps them “stuck” on low division are just not very good.

Eh .. I can give you a screenshot of my game and you’d see max size minimap and oh god forbid the default bindings of skills.
However I don’t access anything beyond #5 with the key you’ll see on the picture.
It is very bad to make assumptions based on a screenshot. The fact that my heal is not on X doesn’t mean I don’t have sheathing on X for example and #6 is some other alternatively bound key.
Sometimes I eat with one hand and using the #6 is more convenient than key combination
And no I’m not suffering from “omg if i had extra milisecond to do X and survive”. If I die it’s usually because I’m outnumbered or stunlocked or I’ve made a bad call like trying to outrun a thief for example without trying to kite xD but yeah, rare moments,,
She posted a video. Read before posting.
I agree that based on dev posts on this forum MM is the most likely to see some improvements. Thanks Evan!
I don’t think the other parts I mentioned are asked too much though. What was the team working on in the past months? Or is there no team?
Since you mentioned the lobby remake. I find they could be a lot more clever by just using the new guildhalls also as PvP lobby maps. Just remove all the guild stuff and replace it with the usual PvP vendor NPCs/golems/etc. A dueling arena would be nice but could be postponed if it is too much work. How would this be much work?
Would have some nice variation if you sometimes enter Gilded Hollow and sometimes Lost Precipice. Why not use existing stuff efficiently? This would actually even better than one completely new PvP lobby since this one would get old after a while. Every new guildhall they create for guild content could also be added to the pvp lobby rotation which makes it feel fresh.
Be clever Arenanet.
(edited by Dojo.1867)
Well what can I say. Should a person disabled like that be able to leave Sapphire? Maybe not. From the video I can absolutely see why she is there and she absolutely should not be Ruby with that performance.
That is competition for you. What’s wrong with her staying Sapphire if it fits her skill level?
In general all her posts about “MMR hell” really didn’t help her case though because MMR hell, frankly, is not her problem. I am suprised matchmaking worked so well in her case and managed to keep her out of Ruby.
(edited by Dojo.1867)
Honestly based on the video I would be offended if she would be able to reach Diamond or even Legendary. Propably shouldn’t be in Ruby either but sadly due to no tier loss she will be at some point.
No reason to attack her personally though and I hope she can imrpove by learning keybinds.
Next time, restrain yourself to be more polite, and send the uncensored screenshots to Anet. They take cyber-harassment VERY seriously, and those people will get banned.
Funniest thing I read here for a couple of weeks. Good troll post. 9/10

Especially via team queue you have still a very high chance to get there independent from your skill level just because a team communicating via voice chat and working together will beat a team of solo queuers on the same skill level.
20-30% does not seem accurate though, more like 5-10% for me.
So the season is still running but I would be really sad if all that is happening would be some overnight balance changes Karl had to come up with on his way to work.
What changes can we expect with the next bigger PvP update which I assume will happen with the 2016 spring update some time around April 19th?
What people are desperate to see:
- real balancing, most importantly tuning down all elite specs to become sidegrades instead of upgrades
- improvements for the MMR system in combination with the season system, most importantly less lopsided starting phase and reducing the effect of “MMR hell” which affects a small amount of players especially when they do not play during primetime
- news on new conquest maps or updated versions of skyhammer/spiritwatch to make these maps more “viable” for competitive play
- news on a HOTM (pvp lobby) remake to make it more interesting similiar to the new guild hall maps and give people stuff to do while waiting for queue pop
- new rewards for the PvP league vendor (there is pretty much legendary parts and llama pet and nothing else which people could easily buy by now)
- important infrastructure changes like being able to log into hotm from character selection (without loading PvE maps first if you logged out there) or a build template system
How much of that can we expect to see? On what was the PvP team working in the last couple of months? From feedback I read most people would prefer stuff on the list above over more “pro league” focus.
Feeling nostalgic about never played kitten tier ranger. Oh wait.
I get your point though OP.
It is possible. Did it a week ago but I actually had to change my build and playstyle compared to what I played the whole time before that. Just play your best class and carry yourself up.
Ithilwen is a good example for someone not actually in MMR hell. If your true MMR just isn’t that high then keep trying to improve or stop going for a legendary PvP reward that should be somewhat exclusive.
Actually it is GOOD if he leaves this area as fast as possible.
How about he never gets placed there in the first place?
I agree (also wrote this in my post). I actually made threads myself with suggestions like:
- a preseason
- starting at higher division depending on last season
