The marionette is not “hardcore raiding”.

I think it’s a very well balanced event. It’s not easy, and some listening and learning is required from players (shocker), but it’s very do-able and most importantly it’s fun.

Future world events with this same kind of balance would be great.

There’s no reason why you can’t do it with a highish ping. Plenty of oceanic players have. Might be a bit tougher, but that goes for the whole game.

This fight is just about learning patterns and knowing what to expect and where you need to be. High ping doesn’t get in the way of that.

I’m fine with most of the mechanics, but one of them really annoys me: the distortion effect that blinds you. Along with the awkward camera near the walls, the blind effect is really annoying, and forces you to simply memorize the fight. It’s artificial difficulty and it’s a time sink, requiring you to repeat the fight dozens of times to memorize it instead of reacting to what happens. It’s a good fight apart from that.

I assume people are running past the holograms and not bothering to kill the dragon bash spawns, only the aetherblades. So then you come along hoping to find aethers, but all you get are the spawns no one wants. Makes it really hard to get the achievements except by camping the caches.

They should have at least made us activate the holograms instead of having aetherblades just appear when we get close.

An option to disable right click targeting

in Suggestions

Posted by: Downstairs Eddie.8125

Downstairs Eddie.8125

There is a small threshold that determines whether your tiny movement should actually be a target selection. Lowering this threshold will reduce the chances of this happening, but is one of those numbers where we need to sit on it for a while to see if it ‘feels right’.

That’s good because that’s the real source of the problem. But you have to concede that it feels very, very, very wrong right now. The situation right now is far worse than lowering that threshold too much. You can swing the camera several degrees right now and the game still thinks you’re trying to select something, so the threshold is way too high.

Randomized special 'boss' mobs in open world

Downstairs Eddie.8125

When I played LOTRO, one of the things I really liked were the “shard droppers”: powerful enemies that dropped valuable items and had semi-randomized spawn timers and locations.

I’d love to see something like this in GW2. I think it would add something of the GW1 skill capture appeal, in that you are finding and killing boss creatures and being rewarded for it. It also encourages people to explore the open world. It adds some extra excitement to the open world because you’re never sure if you’ll stumble across one of these bosses. They’d need to have useful drops as well, at least a rare item or maybe something else entirely.

Of course we already have the dynamic events, but those are always in the same place and don’t have any special rewards beyond XP, karma, coin. And we have the skritt burglar, but that’s a very rare find. I think special randomized boss creatures along the same lines as the skritt burglar would fit into the GW2 design easily, and add some extra interest.

Well it makes sense… they have no plans for an expansion

Don’t be naive. Expansions will be a big source of revenue for them. Of course they’re working on expansion content. It’s probably what the bulk of the studio is working on. They downplayed expansions a couple of months ago because they wanted people focusing on the living story content. They want hype about the monthly updates, not an expansion that’s still maybe a year off.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Downstairs Eddie.8125

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Didn’t they say that they have a live team and a team that solely works on expansion content?

Not only that, but they said they split their staff 50/50, which is a substantial number. Did the expansion team get laid off, consolidated into the live team, or are they enjoying a year paid vacation?

Interdasting…

PR.

If Colin said “yeah we’re working on an expansion, but we don’t want to talk about it yet”, the headlines become GUILKDL WAR 2 EUXPANDION DCOMING!!!!!!

By leaving it ambiguous, the attention (theoretically anyway) can stay on what they want people talking about: the monthly content releases. Those are the things that will encourage people to keep playing the game right now, rather than something that might tempt players to come back a year from now.

Suicide jumps for res daily

Downstairs Eddie.8125

This thread highlights a big problem with this daily achievement: it makes people play the game in a way ArenaNet does not intend. Obviously ArenaNet didn’t design this daily with the goal of making players kill themselves, but that’s what is happening. And ArenaNet didn’t design the daily so players would deliberately let NPCs die, but that’s what is happening.

This daily needs to be altered so it doesn’t encourage this behaviour. GW2 is supposed to be about players coming together with shared goals; instead we now have players at cross-purposes, some people trying to depend NPCs, others hoping the NPCs will die. This isn’t acceptable.

To the people saying ‘Just play the game’, surely you see the silliness of that argument. People are playing the game, but they aren’t getting this achievement. Maybe if doing dungeons is part of your daily activity, you will get it easily, but guess what: the majority doesn’t do dungeons every day. Maybe you play for hours on end, but the majority does not.

I played for over an hour yesterday, mainly doing WvW, and because our server was dominating there weren’t many fights happening, and when there were it wasn’t always possible to rez people before others did. So I ended up going to Queensdale and letting some NPCs die. Not the intended Guild Wars 2 experience, I’d say.

Colin Today:

Hey guys,

Just a quick update on where the whole scavenger hunt system stands since I know that’s a topic many of you have brought up recently. We’re not currently actively working on building any sort of legendary precursor scavenger hunt, this is something we want to do in the future and we’re in the midst of designing how this would function, but no one is actively building this feature and you should not expect in the Jan/Feb/March releases at this point.

Linsey Murdock A month ago:

I am definitely working on the precursor scavenger hunt!

Just add it to the list.

Or more accurately:

I am definitely working on the precursor scavenger hunt!

we’re in the midst of designing how this would function, but no one is actively building this feature

Linsey could be ‘working on’ the feature without ‘actively building’ it. Design is part of the process. Programming and implementation is another.

Yay account restoration!

That said, for a game I’m planning on playing for multiple years, a 1-strike policy on account rollbacks seems restrictive. I’m sure they’ll revisit that in a bit.

As others have said, it’s probably to cover themselves. If you get hacked again four years from now, I daresay ArenaNet will restore the account, no problem. But if someone is getting repeatedly hacked because they’re completely inept at account security, and refuses to take any action to protect themselves, ArenaNet can reasonably say ‘Sorry, we can’t help you any further.’

I really liked the Halloween clocktower and I hope the Wintersday JP is a just as hard. The clocktower took a big effort to learn, but it was very satisfying to complete. Personally I found the Southsun Cove JP easier, but more frustrating. I’m not sure why exactly, but the point is people will respond to content differently.

I don’t like these arguments that because you personally didn’t enjoy the clocktower, no other JPs like that should ever be put in the game. A lot of people really liked it.

This is only the beginning.

Yes, that’s the big concern. It comes down to whether the ‘other means’ by which we’ll be able to acquire ascended gear in the future are as painful as it currently is. Since it’s supposed to fill the gap between exotic and legendary, we can expect these ‘other means’ to take a long time (and/or a lot of resources) too.

And when they raise the level cap … we’ll have to do it all over again.

Guild Wars 2 wasn’t supposed to be about work, it was supposed to be about fun.

Speed up underwater combat

in Suggestions

Posted by: Downstairs Eddie.8125

Downstairs Eddie.8125

Generally, underwater combat is frustrating because enemies take so long to die, so combat amounts to swimming in circles weakly hitting enemies over and over and over and over again — probably while aggroing more and more stuff because it’s difficult to judge distance.

1. We need to do more damage.

2. Things need to die faster.

3. Many dynamic events underwater need to progress faster (or scale down better). For example, the event “Free the Pact krewe members trapped inside Risen clams” in Straits of Devastation requires you do destroy clams to free Pact members. When you attack a clam, about 4 or 5 Risen spawn and start attacking you. You need to kill them or swim away, then come back and continue killing the clam. More Risen spawn, you need to kill or swim away. Then come back, attack clam again. More Risen spawn. And so on. This event is simply not worth doing unless you have about 5 people.

In short: to make underwater combat less frustrating, speed it up.

Their loss, honestly. I think it’s great that Anet can take a step back and say, “Ahh, yeah, there should be something in between Exotic and Legendary that people can get, yet still feel accomplished about.”

But the tier between exotic and legendary should not have 10% (or more) better stats. Given the cost and difficulty of acquiring it, ArenaNet’s decision is madness. Look at what’s required to get an ascended backpiece. Now imagine doing that for 6 armor pieces, the rest of your jewelry, and all of your weapons. I’m not looking forward to the rollout of ascended gear.

They needed to introduce legendary armor, and maybe make it somewhat easier to get compared to legendary weapons (that would bridge the gap between exotics and legendary weapons), introduce some new jewelry and other items with different combinations of stats — but NOT increase the stats on the gear.

I would be excited about the introduction of legendary armor, because it would have been something I could slowly work towards without feeling the time pressure. But now I’m dreading the introduction of ascended armor, because I know I’m less effective until I get it. It’s a terrible addition to this game.

The weird thing is, only a few weeks ago they reduced the number of tokens needed to buy the exotic dungeon armor because they didn’t want it to feel like a grind. Why would they make that change but then introduce another gear tier that’s much harder to get? Maybe they knew this was coming and could afford to make the dungeon exotics easier.

ArenaNet, you need to learn from the experience of other MMOs.

LOTRO had a similar system called ‘radiance’ gear, which was required for endgame raids. Every new raid had radiance requirements, and it served as a gating mechanic. Big efforts were required to get radiance gear just so you could attend the raids.

The playerbase almost universally HATED it. Loathed it. It took the developers a couple of years to get rid of it, and it did a lot of damage. It was a big reason why I stopped playing that game.

Don’t make the same mistakes. What GW2 needs is more content that’s fun to play on a daily basis. The new dungeon sounds, in theory, like a good thing in that you can attempt to beat your personal best, etc. That’s good. But it should NOT be gated behind stats. That’s a terrible, terrible idea.

Under water combat update?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Downstairs Eddie.8125

Downstairs Eddie.8125

The main problem with underwater combat is that mobs need to be both more spaced out and have reduced aggro range than on land due to the three dimensional map and reduced visibility of the player. Currently, that doesn’t seem to be the case and it makes underwater exploration/combat more tedious and difficult than it should be.

Agreed, and a couple of other things.

1. Underwater combat needs to be sped up considerably. Some enemies take far too long to die, and it makes combat tedious.

2. Utilities that don’t currently work underwater need to have underwater versions.

This is the least ‘grindy’ themepark MMO I’ve ever seen.

If there wasn’t a big effort required to acquire legendaries, your friends would instead be saying ‘Nah no thanks, I heard there’s nothing to do at level cap.’

The difference between GW2 and other themeparks is that a legendary is just cosmetic, and it’s easy to get other max-stat gear.

That’s not to say ArenaNet couldn’t improve the ‘endgame’ by introducing areas that are more self-sustainable in some ways (I’d love to see some big ongoing back-and-forth battles in PvE, for example, which are simply fun to participate in).

But ‘grindy’ is simply a stupid accusation to level at this game.

Human female and clock tower

Downstairs Eddie.8125

Not sure if this has been discussed already, but there seems to be something different about the human female character model. I’ve done the clock tower 30+ times on my characters (all males of all races), but I was helping a friend do the clock tower today with her female human thief, and I was having huge problems making the final jump through the clock face. I’d keep falling down and failing, like I wasn’t jumping far enough or something. I did it first try with my friend’s female asura, but failed several times at the clock face with her female human.

Woodenpotatoes was having the exact same problem with his female character as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbnjSo5whJI

I’m not quite sure what it is, but something is different. I finally completed it by jumping really early, before I could even see the clock face coming around (which I never had to on my male characters).

This isn’t a ‘too hard’ complaint at all; it’s certainly do-able. Just something that should probably be looked into.

If they made the puzzle easier, a lot of people would find it a piece of cake. What the ‘too hard’ crowd is asking for is for the clock tower to be challenging, exciting, and rewarding for them but trivially easy for others. It’s just as self-centred as any other opinion.

In the future (i.e. next year I guess), ArenaNet might consider adding two versions — one without the green goo (time limit). The hard version would stay the same and give additional rewards/achievement/title.
