I reported two commanders for WvW win-trading today on my server to farm WvW ranks. This is not fun for those of us who enjoy WvW.

I’m not going to say which server, but I sent screencaps of them explaining the plot to other players in chat. Basically they were working with the other server over voice chat to farm WvW ranks by trading keeps, towers, etc. clockwise around the map. One commander was boasting about the number of ranks he’d earned. They were telling other players not in on the fix to stop repairing and stop attacking.

Again, this is not fun or fair and I hope ArenaNet puts a stop to it.

Isn’t that sort of like letting speeders buy $10 doughnuts instead of getting speeding tickets?

I think ArenaNet (as well as the rest of us) would rather people just not do some of the bad things they do in the game. Players really hate not playing, so much so they’d gladly pay $10 to avoid it. That’s not much of a motivator to behave.

Hey Empathy! Thanks for getting my attention via the forums!

Actually, your account was never suppose to have been unbanned. Looks like this was a slipup that I’ll rectify right now. Your main account and 8 other accounts have been banned/rebanned.

Your other accounts were banned for botting (and selling gold), and your main account was banned because you mailed gold from your bots to it.

Suspended for undirected profanity in say?

Posted by: LeCreaux.3087

LeCreaux.3087

Perhaps, but suspending someone without warning for talking to themselves in say is really overboard…

…Especially when I am a customer who has bought over $500 dollars in gems in just the past month. If my business really means so little to them that they’d ban me for using undirected profanity in a tiny vicinity like say chat, then they have their priorities mixed up and I’ll take my money elsewhere.

…the customers who spend the most at least deserve the courtesy of a warning. Yes, treating your customers who spend more than other customers is completely okay. Go to any bar/restaurant in town and drop a load of dough then come back the next week and see how much better they treat you….

Look at it this way…have you ever walked out of a restaurant because they DIDN’T do something about an “entitled” customer? Maybe one who cursed, talked loudly, or smoked? A lot of people do walk out and and never return…and it costs more money than it makes.

A lot of people stick with GW2 specifically because they enforce their TOS. They’ve been famous for it since day one and a lot of players cheer every time somebody makes a forum post about getting suspended for language. It’s like hearing a bug zapper.

For me, the gear treadmill is what made me want to quit other MMOs each and every time they added a new tier.

GW2 and its promise of no gear treadmill was what made me abandon my previous MMO, which I’d been heavily invested in for years.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels extremely betrayed by this, no matter how small some may say the increment is. It is what it is, another tier of gear after I’ve already farmed full exotics for my main character and am planning my next one. This is exactly what I did not want.

Why have you waited for two months to follow your guild?

I can’t help but think of a military commander missing the unit’s deployment and having to stand at a civilian ticket counter trying to get the airline to bump passengers off so he can catch up to his unit. I spent almost 30 years on active duty and I don’t remember ever forgetting our commander

Good luck catching up to them, but you’ll probably have to do like everybody else and time it right.

The Rules of Conduct forbid “match manipulation”. I know that currently refers to sPvP, but this affects the experience of other players and WvW matchmaking.

“…you will not participate in any form of match manipulation. Match manipulation is defined as any action taken to fix or manipulate the outcome of a match or alter or manipulate the rankings or ratings of the ladder. This also includes disrupting other people’s game experience by not actively participating in matches in good faith, a.k.a leeching.”

A lot of us enjoy WvW purely for the fun of it. From what I’ve seen so far, ArenaNet is pretty good about keeping the game clean.

Have to disagree with blaming the victim, the scammer is the real bad guy. The victim is only guilty of being naive. Without the criminal there is no crime.

That same logic would make homeowners at fault for home invasions for opening their door to a stranger, store owners at fault for shoplifting, and on and on. The criminal is the bad guy.

They will probably just claim that each was just setting up the other or keeping them on that map to so that the rest of the server can take all of EB, etc.

If you have an organized server community it’s best you take it up with them and get that commander “pariah” status.

Likewise, try to inform someone on the other server of this, if they are known to have any respectable guilds.

The screencaps are pretty clear about what they were doing. I stumbled upon them when I started running supplies to close the door to a keep. I got messages to stop. When I started killing enemies I got whispers to leave them alone. Then they explained the plot to get everybody to understand and cooperate. I screencapped it all and sent it in with a ticket.

My hope is to prevent this from getting widespread like some of the other exploits and it breaks the WvW skill point system and the matchmaking.

You won’t get a suspension for a slip of the tongue

How do they know if you typed with your tongue? IMO, there’s no such thing as a “slip” when you’re typing. If you spelled it, you dealt it.

While the nature of the Internet makes repercussions more likely (in a way) you can still have a metaphorical slip of the tongue while typing. It’s the equivalent of being made, or such, and punching the wall. Not a great idea, but sometimes you do it before you stop yourself.

This assumes the existence of a “stop yourself” instinct. For those who lack it, suspensions provide the hot stove.

I did a paper on this subject in college and found a larger problem. Research shows that approximately 7% of the IT workforce has “ethical flexibility” when it comes to online crime (i.e. it’s ethically OK if they’re not stopped from doing it).

Take note…these are the people who manage the IT where your name and password are stored. As all IT security professionals are trained, the biggest threat is NOT the unknown hacker outside—-it’s the system administrator with a login working for the company. Yes, it really happens, the system does not have to get hacked for your information to get out to the buyers.

Never trust that your login is protected within a system. It’s only as secure as the most dishonest employee of the company. Always assume that your login has already been stolen and never use the same one between systems.

I was a DAoC player. Here’s the formula I thought killed it:

1. The Trials of Atlantis expansion added overpowered weapons that only the lifers could earn.

2. Coupled with the rampant radar hackers it was not worth the trouble to try to fight them (radar + one-shot win ability).

3. WoW came out and you didn’t have to anymore.

I think is totally wrong to not give info about who is doing it. You should definitely post here the Commander’s name, Guild names and Servers, even post the screencaps. If Anet can’t do anything about it(wich they could, if they have proof like the screencaps, everyone involved should get perma-ban) at least a lot of people get to know who are they.

You’re actually encouraging them to keep doing it by hiding they faces, if there’s no sort of punishment, there’s no problem on keep going. Its like arresting someone for robbery but instead of put him in jail you let him go, he will continue robbing tomorrow, cuz its ok. :/

Its against the CoC to call out individuals publicly so he would end up getting the thread closed. I asked him if he was still on a server to give an idea of what servers may have been involved and they can take care of it them selves.

Correct, I have no intention of doing a call out. Right now our WvW map chat is in shambles over this. The players cheating are cursing out the players telling them to stop. ArenaNet needs to get involved, they’re openly farming WvW talent points.

I see a lot of players refer to “not being offended” in their posts. In issues like these I don’t think it’s an issue about being offended. If the company decides the names violate their rules then that’s just what it is. For example, we have an HOA in my community that enforces homeowner rules. A lot of the things they enforce don’t even register on the care-meter for most of us, but they’re in the contract so it is what it is. Every time the HOA fines a homeowner for something, that homeowner often complains to the other homeowners about it. But in the end, most of us choose to just comply with our contracts and not get the fines.

I played DAoC and Darkness Falls was awesome. We’d go out on the frontier (PvP zone) to open our entrance and close all the others. Then we’d attack Darkness Falls to kill all the enemy players there. Sometimes fights inside Darkness Falls would rage until another side opened their entrance and closed ours (putting us on defense). And since I played a stealth class it was a ganker’s playground.

Yes we had dry spells where we couldn’t even get in there, but that made it even more desirable. There was good loot in there, not to mention player kill points. That website with player kill points was more motivation than all the gold in the land.

I’ve already resubscribed to my old MMO. The whole Ascended gear thing was the last straw.

I was tolerating the hacking, the bots, the unstable trading post, the lack of slash commands, account recovery, telephone support and other standard MMO features, the total randomness of rewards (mystic forge), and all manner of quest and other bugs.

But if I’m going to play a treadmill it might as well be a game that’s stable and predictable so at least I feel like I have some kind of control. I don’t feel that right now in GW2. I hate to return to a troll-infested game, but for me that’s the better alternative right now. Hopefully GW2 matures eventually.

Fyi Thanks for not calling out the servers directly but with the ability to search past posts, it’s quite easy to narrow down whom you may be talking about. Assuming this is true…with out proof, your post is moot.

The ticket has the screencaps, that’s in ArenaNet’s lane now. My post is not a call-out, it’s a stand against the exploit. Hopefully other players recognize the plot when they see it and help control it instead of going along with it.

LeCreaux.3087

I have played online games for over 15 years. I have yet to have a single one of my accounts “hacked” so clearly it is very possible to avoid being “hacked”.
The thing is, all these “hackings” are not hackings at all. They are either using a weak password, using the same password everywhere, having a keylogger, sharing account details or simply getting tricked into pressing a harmful link in an email (which is btw warned about on this very forum)

Have to disagree here. The guy is a victim, nobody deserves to be a victim. Even if you leave your keys in your car you don’t deserve to have it stolen, although it is an easier target. Cars and accounts don’t steal themselves. Don’t get so desensitized to the act that you don’t see the crime in it.

It is sort of an industry practice to be able to recover accounts and items, the likelihood is high in MMOs for that to be needed. It perplexes a lot of us that it’s not built in to their design. I’m sure ArenaNet is aware of the need for it as well (we all hope).

LeCreaux.3087

The manpower rationale would make sense if they didn’t do so much work to determine if a bug caused the problem. In my case, they requested screencaps and timestamps, even reviewed their own logs. There was no conflict as to whether I did possess the missing item…only whether it was a bug that caused it to go missing.

In a game like this, which is like every other MMO, customer loyalty is what pays the bills. If an honest customer loses an item that has no value (other than to the customer) and costs nothing to replace, it would seem a very good business value to restore it. Doing so would make money from this customer in the future, refusing could lose money in the future.

I can understand refusing to replace a dropped ice cream cone to teach a child a lesson, but some of us are grandparents, business owners, and retirees. We know how to run a business and this issue contradicts business logic. Yes, weed out the dishonest players who are trying to score an item for free. But don’t lump the honest players in with them.

LeCreaux.3087

The bigger issue here is the great frustration to honest players for no apparent gain. Players spend considerable time and dedication to earn some of these items and skins, you could argue they’re the ONLY reason some people even play the game. Refusing to restore them when they’re lost due to some mechanic can literally end the desire to play their product. Conversely, restoring them likely increases commitment. Makes no business sense.

in Account & Technical Support

LeCreaux.3087

Reality check needed here. From a computer security perspective we can debate password complexity all day (and we really do) but in the end it’s a balancing act between what the user can handle and the threat.

1. The threat here is a list of known passwords and the usual easily guessed passwords. It’s not hackers with an offline copy of ArenaNet’s password files with endless time to crack them (if that ever happens the best defense is simply a mass forced password change).

2. The users are just gamers, of all ages, regular people just trying to have some fun. Yes, a small percentage have the ability and willingness to use high-complexity passwords (overkill for the threat). But for the threat, most probably just need to come up with something that’s NOT on the known list, not used anywhere else, and can’t easily be guessed.

The OP’s post did not mention whether they were swearing AT one of their teammates. There is difference between saying, “Aw kitten, I missed the last jump for the JP! I was SO CLOSE! God kitten kitten it!” and “You kittenkittenfuzzykitten, I hope your kitten rots off and you have to lick it up, you kitten!!”

The language filter is there to allow for people who are OK with seeing swear words; it does NOT give you license to abuse other people or act like a kitten. I strongly suspect that the OP was suspended because he/she was doing the latter.

See HERE or HERE

GW2 doesn’t treat the filter like other MMOs do. Foul language will get you suspended. The filter is to protect other players — not to enable profanity.

“Don’t bother, they’ve started to introduce new gear with higher stats, it’s World of Warcraft all over again. Stay away from it man.”

I would be OK with this if the rest of the game was as engaging as other MMOs. I also gave up years of progression in another MMO for GW2, and did it for the same reason (get off the gear treadmill). I’ve played MMOs since the 1990s and was hoping that GW2 was going to be the heir to DAoC’s RvR.

I like my Asura, a lot. I like the skins I’ve earned for him and the dyes I’ve worked for. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at my build. I like that ArenaNet enforces their behavior standards (witnessing that was worth the price of the game).

Some of the things I’d change:
- more responsive attack commands
- a wardrobe
- /target functionality
- moveable UI objects
- STOP adding every player I search for to “friends”
- telephone support
- character recovery
- add comment field to “report” functionality
- full right-click menu on players in WvW
- implement DAoC’s web-based RvR scoreboard (keep status, player stats, etc)
- implement some kind of Guild WvW ranking system

I’m sure there’s more ideas out there.

When I read about the “Ascended” gear all I could think about was “Gear Grind”. No Thanks.

What I like about the game at this point is that I can gear all my characters in basic exotics and then enjoy the game on each of them. I can add legendary weapon skins for eye-candy and that’s a nice enough carrot.

This was supposed to be a game for the masses that didn’t have a grind, you enjoy it from day one. Like in every other game, the “hardcore” players are the minority. They’ll flee to the next game, don’t disrupt the game for the rest of us to cater to them.

in WvW

LeCreaux.3087

I agreee with most of your points, but the bigger priority is Nightcapping/ stale rankings/gameplay than commander books.

In a 24-hour global MMO what you’re calling “nightcapping” is simply normal game play. If anything, losing territory overnight mixes things up. It would be kind of boring if things rarely changed hands. I don’t think that one is ever going to change, much less be a priority to change.

The rankings, however, are probably going to get even more stable now that transfers are no longer free and that’s going to get stale fast for whichever server is always on the short end of it. I think they should ALWAYS switch the first and last place servers no matter what (except the overall first and last of course).

The “commander” thing just doesn’t make sense to me. Once you have that icon it should indicate you have WvW experience. Right now it’s too often just players wanting to tell others what to do. A lot of us simply ignore them until they we see them earn it. I’d really like to have confidence in that blue dot when I see it.
