4. Casuals like Challenge
Without challenge, be it in skills oder decisions, repeated RPG-Fights are most likely experienced as grind (even pure relaxation games work better with some kind of challenge).
And to continue to offer challenge, you may need rising difficulty.
Of course, there is also story and exploration in the Open-World. But why bother putting all those monsters in, if they are only mere annoyances?

(I am sure, this is nothing new for ArenaNet. They hopefully will increase difficulty for the finished product).

Good Design is not 100% subjective. But it depents on what you are aiming to archieve.

If they plan to use Mordremoths Voice to introduce important parts of the Story to the Players – this might be bad design. But that is obvously not the Case.
Its more likely supposed to add some Flavor, to emphasize the influence the Dragon has on Silvary, etc.
It will feel more special, threatening and immersive if only Silvary can hear him.

Hypothetically, Swamp is Fractal 96. Wont people just run this over and over again rather than Cliffside at 100?

People will farm one single most efficient fractal over and over and it will get difficult to find (guild-)members for any other.
I would rather have them keep some randomization (i.e. if you play on level 85 you get one of the islands between 80 and 90).

Racial storytelling is GOOD, Collin.

TamTiTam.9574

I would prefer interesting choices and a branching story line over racial or profession specific stories.

I really like to have the feeling of Choice in RPGs, even if its mostly an illusion or really limited.
It makes a story about a powerfull hero much more believable if he has to say something about the course of action.
And I always have an Idea about how my character would act in a specific situation. If the Game gives me two or three Options to choose from, there is often something that kind of fits a little bit to the Idea of my character.
It’s more immersive, even if it’s just a different dialogue-Option with no consequences at all.

The problem with branching in an MMO however is that everyone has to end up at the same outcome, otherwise the story is pointless in regards to the rest of the game. Because of this, you will always be funneled into a specific outcome, diminishing the story in favor of having multiple options.

Not True. There could be huge meaningfull differences in the outcome.

i.e. depending on your choices, NPC’s hate or like you, survive to live a fulfilled life in your story instance or die a terrible death.
They could even let the player character decide about the future of whole cultures , as long as they don’t plan on using them too much in future content.

They could also add two different sets of visuals and dialogue if you visit the city of the race you saved or doomed. I don’t think stuff like this will happen, but it is possible for a MMO to do.

I don't like DE 2.0

TamTiTam.9574

Hi there,

since another thread was closed I’d like to continue the discussion with more perspective.

First of all for me the only three characters without problems in this game are Rytlock, Forgal and Canach but in this thread I’d like to focus on DE2.0.

Braham
What’s more I find his relationship with Eir totally not convincing. She’s a legend and his mother but their interraction with each other is lacking and emotionless.

Braham’s final score: 3/5

Their relationship could get really interesting. I hope that ArenaNet is going to explore it more in HoT. So far, Braham just acts like a recalcitrant little teenager, with no emotional maturity. And ArenaNet should show more of Eirs depressed? brooding mind.

Concern B: WvW players don’t like mechanics that get in the way of actually fighting the enemy.

This isn’t a map for WvW players. We’re too few and don’t make A.net enough money to be cared about. This is a map to give PvE’rs more to do. Most of the people kittening over these gimpy mechanics are PvE’rs. That’s why you see posts from people who admit they don’t play WvW but this will get them too.

What “PvE” are you talking about?
All of the Events on the new Map sound like PvP-Events to me.
What do you guys want? An empty flat Area for big Zergs bumping into each other?

I guess, many people (including me) consider WvW as “worlds vs worlds” and not “worlds vs environment and random creatures and turrets and whatever else is there”.

Where do you get “worlds vs environment and random creatures and turrets and whatever else is there” from?

The Cannon Event i.e. seems to be a PvP-Event, Players are supposed to fight over those Cores. They emphasized that killing the Mobs is not the Problem.
The environment (sand storms etc.) is supposed to influence to fighting (breaking up Zergs, give some variety) not to replace it.
I do not want to be a “white knight” and defend a Map that obvously sucks.
I am seriously interested what all this hating is about.

"Suggestion" GW2 Dueling updated

TamTiTam.9574

I would love open world Duels because it would kill the boredom of waiting for Events, you would always habe something fun to do – a reason that is not mentioned in above summary.

They could add a diclaimer about class Balance, they should also definitely make it possible to block Duelling-Requests.

I never experience harrasment associated with Dueling in any MMOPRG.
(Only ~twice in WoW-Classic, where you could not block Dueling-Invitations.)
And every good player knows, that PvP-SKill =/ PvE-Skill.
So you do not have to be afraid of loosing your virtual **** by not allowing Duels.
If anyone ever asks (which is not as likely as you might think) just say “I am not interested in PvP” and be done with it.

TamTiTam.9574

True. There was a lot of cosmetic stuff you had to grind for.
Especially in the LS.

You never get to choose between many different activities you could do to attain it.
Just one Map, a few Taks to repeat and often a limited timeframe. Thats Grind.

More cosmetics outside of the Cash-Shop, that do not require repeating the same tasks in the same Area again and again and again… – would make the Anti-Grind philosophy more believable.

You have a wide variety of possiblities to get ascended ingridients. They could try to find a similar concept for cosmetics. I really would like to exchange LS-Tokens (even if the exchange rate is bad), so I do not have to grind a specific Map for cosmetics.

You do not have to grind, if you do not “need” to get Legendary or ascended Gear in a few months.

They might be the best gear for years from now.
You can get most of the necessary ingredients by just playing the new content now and then.

You do not need to grind WoW raids. You can wait and just do 5 mans and in 3 months they become legacy raids that anyone can complete easymode.

See what I did there?

The difference in WoW is, that there is always a new Tier.
You are not able to get the “best Gear” by just playing now and then.
Slowly saving Tokens for Tier 17 might not feel as attractive when you know, they will be weak and “legacy” in a few month.

GW2 sometimes feels more grindy for me then WoW, because I do not mind repeating challenging Dungeons as much as… well, most GW2-PvE content.
But it definitely does not force you to grind.

I think that most of the new levelling Experience may habe been a good Idea. (Don`t have a lot of time to argue, though)

a) Levelling feels more meaningful, there is a bigger sense of accomplishment.
b) Important and interesting Features(/Abilities/Traits) are highlightet and you have time to get used to them. They ARE an accomplishment . Many new pleyers, who would have ignored them otherwise, will at least try them out.

Unlocking features is not “just” time gating.

Up to now most open-World Updates mostly rewarded running in a circle pressing 111!! … While being fun from time to time it`s not really interesting in a long run.
Good Loot alone does not equal fun.

At least now they are trying hard to give us something different then “just another Zerg-Train”…
And I like seeing some coordination in Open-World. I like seeing the players I fight with (not just an anonymous Mass of 75+). It doesn’t work perfectly, but Queens Jubilee1.0 wasn`t the peak of Game-Design either.

Players can enjoy more multifaceted Content without the feeling of missing out Loot.

There are many problems with challenging open-Word content (discussed in other forums), but I still find it far more interesting than just another farm-Event.

New 1v1 Arena mode implemented(both PVP and PvE gear, different queues or smth).
Why not? Can’t see a single downside to this and I can find multiple flaws in gem-store dueling flags, open world fighting, PvP 1v1 server dueling and OS dueling(what we have right now). Would be pretty fabulous in my opinion.

Dueling is not meant to be “serious”. Its casual, spontaneous and kills the waiting time. This Concept doesn’t work If you have to leave the map.

I still do would like to know the Reason for the objections to Dueling.
If it is implemented as i.e. Blood Red Arachnid suggests, why do you even care?
I would really like to hear an Argument.

The objections from those don’t want open world dueling never have any merit.

nor has the reason to add duels in the PvE open world, absolutely no difference.

OpenWorld-Duels could give you somthing interesting to do while you are waiting for Dungeons/World-Bosses/Events. You have fun, get to know people, it doesn’t feel like waiting at all. Duels eliminate Boring.
They would have to be in the Open-World, because players will not leave the Map while waiting.

As long as you can automatically block all duelling requests:
How would Duelling “destroy the cooperative Nature of PvE”?
How would Duelling affect you at all?
This is a serious Question. I am really interested.

TamTiTam.9574

People want open world dueling so that they can be irritants. They want to be able to harass others and flex their kittens. They want to roll flavor of the month dueling builds, play their scissors and specifically hunt down their paper to cut, then crow about how awesome they are.

Otherwise, they’d be fine with specific arenas where they could easily find other people like them.

Nonsense. People want open world dueling :
…because it would KILL the boredom of waiting for your Group / Event / WorldBoss!
…because they want to play casually against friends
…because they would find tons of new friends.
…because it would be fun to watch other player duel
…because you could use the environment (Roofs, Bridges, etc.)
…because you could try out your equipment

People will not leave the open wold while waiting for an event / world Boss.
PvP Arenas are not as casual as duels. It’s always the same environment…

If you don`t like open world duels, why bother?
As long as you can refuse duels by default… Kittens will be Kittens, there are enough possibilities for that already. Just /ignore.

For several Reasons most Players tend to play the way that yields most rewards (especially in a MMORPG). If you would really want Players to work together to archieve an Objective, don’t throw rewards at them for doing something counter-productive…

The new LS-Events would be a lot more fun if more Players would actually try to rescue 1500 citizens.

Problem is that just following the zerg feels far more efficient reward-wise than anything else, even if its counter-productive. Even worse, It feels like there is a penalty for coordinated small-groups in that you’re getting less loot and achievements.

This also creates unnecessary Conflict between Players who archieve the objective of rescuing citizens and Players who want rewards.

There should also be more instant gratification for working towards Completing those Events. I guess, I would reduce regular Loot and hand out a LootBag for every 20 Citizens saved…

It should be far more easy to find out how long time gated Conent is going to stay….
ArenaNet obvously knows and people obvously want to know…
So why are they not telling us ingame? Is there a strategy behind this madness?

The Marionette will stay until story reasons say that it shouldn’t be there. So it might go away in a week and a half if Scarlet brings it to attack Lion’s Arch and a new event happens there, or it might go away in a month when Scarlet is killed by the being she’s probing underground for, or it might go away in a month and a half when the players capture Scarlet and bring her to justice.

If they tell us now exactly how long the encounter will be there, that’s spoiling the timeline on Scarlet’s plans and/or her life expectancy.

I don’t see how this is too much of a story-spoiler.

The Event could end because the Marionette is attacking Lions Arch.
The Event could end because the Marionette is “destroyed”.
The Event could stay because there is a second Marionette attacking Lions Arch.
The Event could stay because the Marionette is just a weapons test for something much bigger.
Whatever timeline they give us, we do not know much…

Not having the same Skills to work with doesnot feel like even footing.
This will most likely work against GW2 ever being succesfull in E-Sports.

Having to unlock Skills is – for obvious reasons – very unkommon in (E-)Sports.

Ah, that explains the ads I saw in the LFG tool then… “…No rangers or other useless classes…”

This is a tad overdramatic. My glass cannon ranger, not exactly know for being able to tank, can change utilities for 12 seconds of invulnerability. I could even take a pig for 15 seconds. Stealth on a Longbow for 3 seconds, and I haven’t even used a heal yet. Equip a greatsword for an evade every 3 attacks after that. And so on and so forth.

Every class has a way of surviving long enough to stand on the buttons, or if it’s just totally impossible for you, you can distract the enemies attacking your friend on the button.
