A new race I would expect to come in an Xpac one day along with race change tokens. Its possible but I wouldnt hold my breath. Theyve done a lot of things they said they wouldnt recently and with HoT having laid the groundwork for better things, PoF giving mounts and hopefully a better experience its not unlikely that they might spend some time on a new race to play. Several races, Tengu, Kodan, Largos, hell even centaurs are in a place that could be playable but honestly I think the day they give a new race it will be completely new and as such likely if we go further east as we see the map has expanded.

since there is no trade tab its the most logical thing people would assume to use. A simple warning on the LFG would suffice, but to only be on the forums doesnt help those who dont use them.

The point now is, I understand after being showed, after the fact, a situation I walked into without knowledge, what the deal is. Now I am saying, there are way to fix this for others not to blindly walk into and there is no reason it cant be done.

Whatever the case the topic is done I have my info, I hope others get it before they accidentally walk into the same situation unassuming.

Shovels are accountbound, so you cant sell / buy them, so no need to spam
“buying shovels” in world chat .. or whatever you did.

You dont understand any of what was said then. They can be sold through and for the guild, relying of course on trust. I did not talk about ‘map chat’ either I spoke about LFG Open World. I didn’t spam, I opened a party looking for those willing to trade, I only remade the party when it would vanish for no apparent reason (assuming due to reporting). This brings up two issues, trolls abusing the system and not caring about their accounts, and secondly if such things shouldn’t go there, then where? If the answer is no where, then you will always have people having issues with this as there are various things in the guild that are account bound and people would rather spend then wait and grind.

Since we have no sort of trade chat or something of the sort, but also no rules, at least in game, about what should be posted where. When someone is looking to buy a certain item not available on the market(in my case) or perhaps advertise a guild, whatever, exactly how are they meant to do it? It would appear my attempt too buy shovels was reported, I can only assume, because some people didn’t want that in what they considered reasonable for Open World Content, but if people can so easily report and shut others down, no matter the content of the party, isnt that inherently flawed?

Whatever the case, where are people meant to go for stuff like that then?

Greetings and welcome to The Occulus.

Group Info:
The Occulus is primarily a small gaming group, looking to expand. GW2 has been a core game of ours and a game we frequent. As a group we own a TS to speak with one another (not required) and use it as a sort of central hang out to group up or just talk. We’d love to add another few voices to our server and some a few more players to help acquire or accomplish various things not only in GW2 but outside it as well.

Guild Info:

  • North America [TC]
  • Timezones: All, we have people from all over the world
  • Voice: We have a TeamSpeak but it is not required
  • Playstyle: We are a PvX type guild, we try to do everything in the game. Obviously Guild Halls and Raids will be an upcoming focus.
  • RP: Yes. We do not have an overarching story currently but our members do engage in RP. (Additionally on the TS we may even run campaigns of D&D or other RPGs if that interests you)
  • Rep: We do not require constant rep, only rep when we are doing something as a guild.

The Occulus looks to be a place you can come by and relax, do what you please while shooting the breeze and then getting together for more difficult tasks. Everyone has things they prefer and are better at and together we try to help each other accomplish everything. The more people who join the better we can do so, but for now, as a small guild, we’ve accomplished a lot with limited resources and will continue to do so as we grow.

The Occulus is a guild for gamers and RPers. We were created several years back as a Minecraft RP group and have stuck together to play a variety of games. GW2 is another game at the heart of many of our players. We hope to find additional players not just interested in doing everything in GW2 but also participating in various games we all enjoy.

In GW2 we are a small group with connections to at least one other guild which aides in allowing us to grow even as small as we currently are. (Can’t wait for the whole cross guild feature). We play all aspects of the game and in all ways, depending who you come in contact with that day you might be in for some competitive PvP or some casual map exploration and RP. We thrive on variety and flexability and we understand that we are all gamers, that there are other things we like to do then just one game.

Dragon Hunter Needs Trap Ground Targeting

it’s not a matter of one playstyle or another its a matter of, this doesnt really mesh well with its own concepts.

Traps, as they are, demand melee range to be effective in group content and the bow demands you stay back. Yes there is weapon swapping, but as its built you either want traps and no bow or you want bow and no traps, where other classes have synergy with their new weapon and skill, let alone the trait line to have that bow asks for you to stick to some rather specific things.

Colin stated in this most recent PoI that the Beta Map (25%) was only of the jungle floor. No canopy available, and no underground (roots).

So, I’m expecting it to cover 75% more of the map when I press the M key. Basically go to the edge of my screen then almost hit the words, “Magus Falls” … Still seems like a LS update vs. expansion. “But it has three levels!!!!#I@!J#ORIJ!!!” And? It’s still the same map. I expect better for a paid expansion.

Your judging by such an arbitrary thing, each map could be huge but if there turns out to be say 2 (and that wont be the number) despite having tons of content you would feel jipped just because it wasnt more maps?

If you could get traps (unchanged from this beta) without the rest of the Dragonhunter baggage, would you use them in PvP/WvW?

The problem with traps is more that they don’t fit with a spec which partly emphasizes ranged play.

idk what you mean. I like everything the DH has just that it currently doesnt feel like it meshes well. honestly though its the traps I care the least about I want the bow, I want the changed virtues, I could do without the traps, but I am given them so Id like to see them work better.

beta is beta, bugs will happen. If you want to test masteries though, make new characters the first story will give xp. This is after all for testing not necessarily for fun, if you want to help and test that then make due with whats there. Create 4 characters, get oine mastery rank done, delete one, make new, repeat repeat repeat. Then you can earn and test out more since actually completed level ups are saved and its all account bound.

Dragon Hunter Needs Trap Ground Targeting

in Guardian

Trock Bronze.9625

No ground targeting with traps means you can’t just throw them out there in a group. It emphasises more backline playstyle rather than front line or.. mid line.. if that makes sense.

The bow being 1200 range, wasn’t exactly meant to be used intermittently with traps. The bow itself is used to keep people at bay as long as you possibly can until they come close enough to activate your traps. That said, I do believe the bow knockback effect should trigger just a hair further because i’ve knocked people out of my traps before :p

but the traps dont support backline play they support running in with GS and placing them on your enemies feet for their effects to actually go off. Enemies often will side step them as well if you don’t do this.

I wish traps were set up similar to bowkit 4 / 5.

But that’s just me I’m sure. xD

Nah I totally agree, although more with a guardian releasing magic from their hand then the bow as obviously you wont always have a bow to ‘shoot traps’. Then again that would be a neat trait, if bow is in hand allows ground targeting and it fires light up wards, falling down to place the trap where you selected.

Trock Bronze.9625

I didnt know where else to post something like this but its not a bug about the character but something noted by everyone in map chat in the zone I am in when discussing things.

The bow is great for DH but doesn’t mesh with traps well, the traps are great but more so if you stand in them with GS or something. Without a trait in the line for ground targeting it limits the effectiveness in meshing with the bow as the bow encourages staying more still.

Now obviously you can place em down, kite, and so on, its not like it doesnt work at all, but being able to target would be a great improvement. As it stands from some discussion in map chat people seemed to be of similar mind that either they’d have a build for the bow without traps or a melee build with traps should they want to use the new stuff. But continue that conversation here maybe we were wrong in that assumption and others found better ways to play with bow and traps as is.

complaining while having like 10% of the information is really kinda dumb. Sure these few things you want might not be there or in the way you want but that does not somehow make the expansion bad nor not full of other content. As per races and cantha, there are statements on why both of them have not been added, but you can continue to hope beyond hope if you want or accept it and move on to enjoy what is coming.

No and thats why I say good reason but no confirmation. These suggestions for one make sense, they fit with the class design and they alleviate certain issues the class experiences (both being long range) Like I said there is reasonable evidence and simply considering the options you can negate certain options most likely. However Anet did say they wanted to think outside the box for some classes so who knows in the end beyond the things that are absolute, like Engi Hammer.

AngryJoe Interview - HoT Questions for Devs?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Trock Bronze.9625

Trock Bronze.9625

Honestly when the expansion was announced it didn’t get me as hyped up as I thought it would. A lot of the content here in HoT is content I felt like should have already been in the game or at least in by now. What took so long? One new region? I’f I remember right GW 1 expansions would have multiple regions, and no new races or something that really grabs new players or return playrs attention aside from the revenant and specializations.

Perhaps some of these things would have been nice to have already and arguably could have been, but Anet went a different way with things, with constant content updates. They have a mixed review, some want more traditional content others were happy with it, I wouldn’t take the typically down and negative views on the forums with that much weight on things like that.

However, some of the questions here are answered or already explained but may not be known by you (and if they are sorry for assuming). One new region is not necessarily as small as you might think. The maps are said to each contain 3 layers, 3 levels to them and be jam packed with content. They wanted to focus on making sure the zones where interesting and lively rather then spreading things out over a larger surface area. Its assumed but not confirmed to be 3-4 maps but all containing this 3 layer feel to them and with the movement additions with the masteries getting around should allow for a very thorough exploration of every corner. I would just suggest taking this aspect with some consideration, until we know more we can’t really say it’s ‘small’. It wont be the size of the rest of the world sure, but it might certainly qualify as plenty of content in the space despite the land area not being as big as one might expect of an expansion. (Still we don’t really know as the 3 layers might give us maps on a much larger scale then expected. Already from trailers and images the verticality is enormous. )

As per races the reasoning was that they don’t add much in terms of something to build on like the rest of these updates do. Everything they are bringing with HoT is meant to lay groundwork for future updates from here out with new ways to create skills, to allow for more weapon choices and specializations of classes, masteries, and so on. While a new race would have grabbed attention it wouldn’t have added meaningful content (A few racial skills, a differently skinned model(depending on the race, with clipping issues and the like) and a personal story that shoe-horns the race into past events.) They can do this and may in the future but for this expansion it didn’t explore the same ‘building pillars’ the rest of the content did, which may not be an answer many like but something I am personally ok with.

The main things that will determine if you get old players back and hold current players attention,, will be just how much these changes shake things up. Will the meta change? Will other builds beyond pure DPS be needed? How much of the old world will be affected by the new concepts? Despite the forums concerns, the articles and discussions I have read seem to answer these questions, or at least suggest, that these changes will be improving the life of the game and really challenging players to try new things and approach content differently. As per new players, word of mouth if these changes really do bring new life to the old and current players ought to be enough.

There are many things Id like to know about that are coming, but I doubt Anet will comment on them too much yet. Specilizations, masteries, the extent of the new area, and much more, but something they might be free to discuss is, in what way will they continue to tell the story? Are we going to have personal story that continues? Will it only be living story? How much of the story will be told just through the area it’s self? And something that I believe was said in an article and talked about in the past, How much will your characters class (and perhaps race) affect your story? I recall talk of the story being the same and mostly linear but that each person might experience things different due to these factors. Where say a warrior might lead a charge into battle in section 1 of the story an engineer might be repairing or building things for that fight. Again I only recall mention of this, however I am curious just what they intend to do with the story from here out. LS hasn’t been perfect but they have improved many things as they have moved forward.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Trock Bronze.9625

Simply put, no.

Taunt is a CC. Just because it brings something in your direction (for a second or two like other skills) we have ways of preventing, stopping, and now another new condition stopping boon to come. Its just adding more of what we have with a new twist.

You can start worrying about tanking being a thing when you can actually stick an enemy on one person forever and you can worry about healing when they actually make out going healing skills do more then the small amount they do. As the game currently is both of these concepts are only there in the smallest sense, its all about you knowing how to place yourself and watch your own health. Its damage mitigation not healing and tanking.

Like you I have one of every 80. I’ve experienced the majority of PvE content this game has to offer (most of which done on a Ranger). While all we can do as individuals is report what we see, the facts don’t support your argument.

There really is a ranking of classes in PvE. The Necromancer really is last in damage and utility. In WvW there really is a GWEN meta and the competitive few that play it at a higher level don’t have room for Rangers or Engineers. In PvP it’s divided into tiers where the low tiers have all the rangers, the mid tiers is nothing but cele builds, and the upper tiers are made up of a disproportionate number of certain classes with a very small sampling of the others.

So while these disadvantages I mentioned may not actually impact you, they do exist. They’re very well known. And they’re very widely discussed.

This stuff only matters if you play by the meta game. The point stands that every class has its function, does it well and is strong in some ways and weak in others. We wont have a blanket bland, everyone can do everything in the same way system. As far as PvE is concerned its fine, its only in PvP where other players are a factor that some ‘tiers’ matter.

I really do not see how rangers are bottom tier PvP though, from my experience (and of course you can go ahead and assume I am terrible if you like, I consider myself a moderate PvPer but I do know whats going on when Im in there) Rangers are one of the better classes and harder ones to take out. The main issue I see is that people have made these tiers up and follow the meta so closely they are blind to a lot of things. Is it perfect? No. Is it so terrible however? no.

What I really don’t get however is that people can think there will not be balancing and old classes being revisited beyond specializations to apply new boons, conditions, and perhaps even the ‘new tech’. Maybe that one, or few, things you think need to change about x class havent happened but Anet has been updating and balancing things since launch, why would they stop now?

Forgive me if I’m not all that excited for a return to the trinity system.

you wont have to worry about it in GW2, its not happening. Taunt is just a name, its effects are not like that of ‘tanking’ in the traditional sense. It is another addition to the damage mitigation available in game though and thats good.

leman, I feel sure you’ll find that the concern you’ve expressed has been and will continue to be a focus of the entire dev team during the process of development, testing, polish, beta testing, balance, more polish, and so forth. The last thing an expansion pack would be intended to do is to put one profession at the top of the pyramid, where all others are “inferior” in some sense.

I have every confidence that all the other professions will do just fine playing in with, and against, a Revenant.

Unfortunately we’ve seen this before though.

Necromancers have been at the bottom of the pyramid in PvE since the game came out. Rangers, until recently, had the same issue in WvW, and arguably still do in PvP.

I think people’s concern is that the well-off classes will get specializations that make their class more dynamic with entirely new ways to play them. The worse-off classes will merely get specializations to fill in the gaps that have been discussed numerous times over the past 3 years and whether these specializations will compete with the others is anyone’s guess.

I imagine the goal is to have 9 fully functional classes with 9 seperate, but also fully functional specializations? A Ranger should still exist and be viable when compared to a Druid for example.

The classes aren’t really starting in an equal and competitive level going into the expansion. We’re worried what will happen after it gets here.

ps. And it’s also worth noting for the people that think specializations will solve all the woes being discussed in this thread… the revenant isn’t a specialization. It’s the base class. Who knows what its specialization will be capable of.

pps. Gaile, is it feasible for ANet to select the class specialists and have each of them coordinate a class CDI on their own specific forum so maybe ANet could get a clear picture of where players feel their respective class is? And would this information be able to be disseminated before the release of the expansion? Given what you know of the Ranger CDI and the time invested with that.

These disadvantages you speak of are not shown in game, you need to experience more of the game, play more classes it seems, to see that some classes are better against others, not everyone can easily beat anyone else. As well PvE content, it matters on what you care about, meta is meta, if your class cant be a part of it, whatever, but it doesnt mean that the class is useless or unable to complete things. Ive played every class to 80 and done almost any aspect of the game with almost any class and Ive never felt like anything was underpowered, just that some classes take a different approach and when up against certain things dont do as well, but the same classes that do well in those situations do not do well in others.

The classes are on an even field as is, but you can’t expect them all to do well in all situations, they each have their preferences so to say and their weaknesses, just like the revenant and all specializations will have. Calm down.

it will be nice to get ported into the lower map?

3 layers =/= maps. We do ont know how many maps other then ‘a small amount’ and thats in comparison to the entire world we have already. We can rightly assume about 3 or 4 though by that statement. The layers however are in reference to each map which is very vertical, you will have 3 distinct layers per map to explore by going up or down without a map change. This could be wrong, sure, but this is whats being implying more so then what you are saying.

The way point comment is simple to understand- you can’t reach it without certain skills. Its not locked off and hell a mesmer can probably port you there without the skill.

as per the rest of this, so what? I mean really so freaking what? Oh no I can’t go everywhere in the new zone right away. Well could you do that at level 1 when this game came out? No, you had to earn levels, you had to complete certain things first, to hgain access to content. This is natural progress for a game and the ONLY way complaining about this would make sense is depending on what content is being prevented and how long it takes to be able to obtain it. We do not know the answer to this yet and I highly doubt it will be so painfully slow, its more likely to happen practically naturally and with little effort save for a few things, which again, is how games work.

This changes as the game goes on, and we have maps in which basically all the events are themed with the map – like Orr. Where we fight basically the same few enemies in the entire map.

Now, I have never seen someone saying, “You know, I wish the Risen were part of more of the events we have in Orr”. What I have seen are complaints about how Orr is repetitive and lacks diversity within its enemies and events.

In other words, the expansion will be a lot like Orr. Instead of being as great as Queensdale.

Can’t say I’m surprised, given the way the expansion feels and reads rushed, but I’ll just leave it at that.

Who says QD is good? Who says Orr is bad? Who even know what HoT will be like? Perhaps you should open your mind and consider that, as was basically quoted, you will see a theme on the map but various little things going on. Meaning you can expect QD like stuff and Orr/Silverwaste like stuff. Plenty going on, not all mordrem minions. Pretty dense to assume otherwise.

As well I can’t understand you complainers about ‘rushed’ ‘not enough’ or the endless moaning that continue on these forums with only the basic info given to us. You are extrapolating and assuming things that may or may not be.

Masteries: Gating content.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Trock Bronze.9625

Trock Bronze.9625

The fact that it’s “gated content” doesn’t bother me. Absolutely anything you don’t begin the game with is technically “gated”. Skills are gated. Story missions are gated. The very concept of progression – even so-called “horizontal progression” – requires that one begin with less, and progress toward more. Zelda, one of the series referenced in the inspiration for masteries, “gates” content behind completion of certain story segments, or acquisition of certain tools. You may want to play in Death Mountain, but it’s not happening until you’ve “unlocked” it by progressing through the required content. Even more non-linear games like Skyrim “gate” content. You can’t perform shouts until complete certain requirements. You can’t experience game play with a short sword until you find one.

This is not, in itself, negative. Complaining that something is “gated” or that you are “locked out” of using it does not actually illustrate a problem with the system, it just makes a very vague statement about how the system (and nearly any other progression system) works.

So, how should masteries work? How do you have a “progression system” (which we all knew this was) in which progress is satisfying and rewarding, but holds back absolutely nothing from those who haven’t yet reached a given point? How do you implement a way to progress that doesn’t require you to progress?

I just made a post on how combat Masteries should work, imo. Things like the glider and learning new language should be gating but combat is something that should be skill based and not gear/mastery based.

sa mentioned, some things in zelda require a boomerang and what not, just like some combat will require x thing here. Difference is here you can play with friends. If as described players can rip off bark, do you not think that after players capable of doing so, do so, that those who cant wont benefit? GW2 wants people to come together, if my friend focuses noncombat masteiries while I train up language with a certain race why punish us for the choice, rather reward us for coming together and helping out in areas we dont yet have? We don’t know the details, but really come on, even if you cant do much damage cause you dont have perk x isn’t some crazy stupid grind. The game needs to give you things to adventure for and the concept of coming up to an enemy you can’t beat, learning where to go to get what you need, questing for that boomerang and coming back to kill it, is cool. If you think its a grind, it is, but its not some stupid meaningless grind like gear or a few new levels would be. All games have a grind of some sort, its a matter of how fun it is to experience and since we havent experienced it yet and have only some info to go on, you are taking a big jump to suggest that you will be so totally barred until you spend a weeks worth of irl time or something.

"Challenging" content in open world concern

well it could be like the marionette fight you had big groups that then got split into small groups

This, and the Vinewraith event also.

I think they understand this concern and know zergs are an issue. Still it seems like they are taking steps to address it and based on the blog today it would seem that the new maps encourage play across all these outposts, to complete various events that may happen at the same time to better prepare for phase 2 of the map. AKA if we do standard zerg tactics we will be worse off in phase 2. May not be the case, zerg may still win, but it at least suggests that splitting people up will be a likely course.

Additionally masteries will split people based on capability. For example if you dont have the ability to remove the bark from Mordrem you may not be able to compete in an event but your skill in mushroom jumping might allow you to reach an event others can not having not purchased it. Of course at some point everyone theoretically will have all things, but it is likely we will have to choose our individual/small group approach to various events.

HoT Worries: Powercreep and irrelevancy

They have said they would touch up old content and while that might not change it greatly, look at the things they have already touched up such as tequatl and various events that have either been added or improved (kessix hills). They havent forgot or made irrelevant old content, but not every zone has things players do en mass. As well I dont think non-expansion players will be completely excluded from all new content, certain things will still be available. (Clearly not the maps or new story though.).

Based on whats been discussed so far, while the new stuff will of course attract more people, the old things wont be irrelevant. People will still champ train, still fight all the world bosses, still go after lucrative event chains and farming zones, but yes a large amount will likely spend free time/game time in the new zone. That will always be the case though, new will always be better even if all old content got a face lift.

As a Sylvari Player… No. Are you out of your kittening mind? How about we leave the mature content out a game that’s accessable to children, we already have enough of them running around screaming about murdering people over their skin color and sexual preferences (ala COD and DayZ).

And it was a Gods kitten ed bad idea to give into the Sylvari are Dragonspawn Theory because now you’re just going to see more of this crap in chat about how “Sylvari are less than people.”

If this is the friendliest community in gaming, then it really paints a bad picture.

censorship of things because they are dark or touch on bad things is stupid. Such a story is fiction, even if there are real world equivalent, but just like we shouldn’t forget those things, we shouldn’t stop such things from being discussed or explored in art/fiction. The whole “Oh no its bad we shouldn’t let people see this” children or not idea is just bs. People can understand fiction from reality.

Proof that land spears are coming for HoT

I didn’t want to jump into this topic… The trailer shows Rytlock wielding a staff in melee combat, watch it frame by frame and that is obvious. However, I found something very important… Rytlock has a Lionguard Polearm in his office in the black Citidel

The Lionguard polearm is a spear skin for underwater.

There have been multiple interviews in which Colin stated that no new weapons are coming.

What if I told you: they are already in the game. Under water. When Colin talks about no new weapons coming to the game, he is being completely honest, he do not lie. But, he do preserve the secret until they are comfortable with revealing it.
You see if you look at the facts, making under-water spears available on land will do just that. It won’t be different as to rangers getting staffs. It will be an amphibian of a current, not a new weapon.

He said no new weapons, no land spears, no polearms. So no, they aren’t bringing it on land.

Where did he say “no land spears”?

One of the interviews they said no spears/polearms, if you want to play the word game and say because he didnt specifically say land spears fine, but you are fooling yourself. I dont have a link to the exact one because I am uncertain which interview, I thought it was the Juicy one but apparently not, thing is it has been said already, no.

Its magic, there is no reason a torch can not be used with water.
However based on the trailer analysis the Ele seems to be getting a sword.

also why would you ignore bows on guardian? They need a ranged weapon and there is more to hint at a long bow then anything else, its the only spirit weapon they cant use yet.

Looks very obviously like a staff. Besides Spears on land/polearms are already confirmed not happening.

Retroactive Mastery Points?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Trock Bronze.9625

They said you earn them in the jungle but that they will be used all over the world, so no, we haven’t done anything in the jungle yet so could not have possibly earned points to be retroactively given.

they also mentioned mastery points for outside the jungle, such as map completion. this is what was being mentioned i believe.

Id like to see a link to that, so far the only info I have seen says it comes strictly from the jungle but can be used outside of it.
