Fractal material for wvwvw legendary armor?

I just glanced through the materials needed for legendary armor obtained through wvwvw and noticed they needed Cube of Stabilized Dark Energy? From what I understand the easiest way to obtain this is through running fractals?
And the ascended rings in wvwvw do not drop very often, or can be bought with laurels which takes a looong time and is quite expensive.
How do you guys work around this without having to run fractals?

Buy the matrix’s on the TP and maybe I’m lucky but I do have plenty of duplicate and unused Ascended gear from WvW drops.

Pick a server and stick wth it.

Except of course server linking ends up pairing us with servers we don’t want to fight with. I left Dragonbrand for a reason, now you’re telling me I have to fight with them for 2 months? Nope.

Meta Holosmith Build? Power or Condi?

Sure, Holo reliably puts out Vuln, Burn and Bleed. In addition, you could use offhand pistol (more burn, cripple) or shield (essentially no condi). Mix in Kits, Utils, etc… and you’ll have plenty of opportunity for a condi build.

In my opinion, sword for Holo is a power weapon. In my opinion the general focus of the class is also power. If you are going to use sword, focus on Photon Forge, and Holosmith Utilities, then I would say it’s a power spec.

On release you can be sure someone will do the actual DPS numbers. I believe last I saw Engi had ~33K in PvE which was the #3 or 4 DPS spec in game. Holosmith should out damage that with properly managed heat and rotations.

Again though, these are only opinions based on what we’ve seen and what I’ve experienced from preview weekend. Survivability is low.

Until release it’s going to be hard to say for certain. Based on the preview weekend I would tend to say power for sure. However I can see a case for something similar to a burn guardian as well.

I still think Scrapper is better for sustain, but I only play WvW so I’m biased.

I’ll probably play with it more at release, but for now I’m sticking with Scrapper. As a solo WvW player, Holosmith just doesn’t have any sustain. I had fun with it but I had to be super careful that I new what the zerg was doing before executing my rotation or I’d get rolled. I also found it unbelievably easy to snipe Holosmith’s. I can see the case if you run with a dedicated support team.

I really like sword mainhand, but the offhand (either shield or pistol) skills were weird.

I said it in another post, but my final complaint would be the rotations are even more carpal tunnel inducing than previous engi specs.

I like it, and it has a lot of potential, but I don’t think it’s for me.

Doesn’t cleanse existing condis.

If specced for it, it will cleanse one due t the fact its still an elixir.

Well chances are you have 6-8 condis on you so it doesnt really help now, does it?

Which is why traiting it is a bad idea. It’s still a great option as a skill.

I’m sorry if this is rude, but how in frell’s name does being ****blocked from casting anything actually useful for four seconds help? Even untraited, the skill is a liability. Unless you’ve got buddies around that can cleanse 6-8 condis off of you lickity-split, you’re done and your death warrant is signed and stamped thanks to Elixir S stopping you from doing anything to help yourself.

For one, it’s a great way to get through chokes in WvW.

In addition to that, Rocket Boots and Personal Battering Ram have 2 ammunition. With a 2 seconds and 5 seconds cool down between use respectively. Also A.E.D. removes confusion as well and Throw Mine’s damage increased by 20%.

All I can think of now is enhanced Throw Mine + Minesweeper + Bunker (+ Supply Crate maybe), mines for daysssss. Put on a Bomb Kit too and you’ll be booming.

Otherwise it’s a good steer to the right direction and could have more uses. You can now utilize Rocket Boots for hit and run tactics, extreme escaping, or high speed chasing and has more synergies with Scrapper. Personal Battering Ram might hit like a truck now. A.E.D. will definitely be more obnoxious. Personally, I think their Tool Belt correspondences could still use some lovin’.

I’m liking Rocket Boots, Slick Shoes, and Utility Goggles. A.E.D. as the heal. Could be some potential there.

Did this patch actually make gadgets viable? I like the changes on paper. It will be interesting to test some of this out in practice.

“Reactive Lenses: This now uses the traited version of Utility Goggles when Gadgeteer is equipped.
Lock On: Added functionality. This trait will now also analyze foes that you disable. Disable analyze and stealth analyze are two separate skills with individual recharges.
Excessive Energy: This trait now grants its bonus damage when you are not at full endurance.
Kinetic Battery: This trait has been reworked. It now generates kinetic charges whenever a toolbelt skill is used. At 5 charges, gain quickness and superspeed for 5 seconds. Charges can only be generated while in combat but do not expire until 5 stacks is reached or the trait is unequipped.
Gadgeteer: This trait has been reworked. It no longer requires static charges and always enhances your gadgets as long as it is equipped. Gadget recharge bonus has been reduced to 20%. Fixed a bug that prevented enhanced skills from displaying their bonuses properly in the trait preview. Specific gadget enhancements have been adjusted as follows:
A.E.D.: When fatal damage is prevented, this skill now grants shocking aura in addition to its previous effects.

Well I have 2 bee hives and I post a blog about my bee’s every two weeks on facebook in which a lot of Arenanet follows. Also we have a good 20 bee hives on the roof of our building so I while we could be doing more but we are fighting that decline!

Here is the issue….PvE IS the game; PvP and WvW are sidebars to keep groups entertained (to a degree).

Everything in this post screams " But mom they cant have the same toys as me I’m special, take it away from them"

Adding an armor set to other sides of the game doesnt devalue anyone, it means more people can get an armor set with a function to it.

Pve’rs still have nice little achievements that they can wear around LA and pretend that they matter.
Pve’rs will still have the armor that looks terrible unless you mix it with other things
Pve’rs will still be able to discriminate against players and classes and have excuses to feel superior in a game mode that takes very minimal thought process to do and learn.


So chill out, put on your big boy pants and do what you tell other people to do, suck it up or don’t play.

I swear instead of being happy for other people in the community the raid/hardocre pve’rs are showing their toxic colors. ( kinda like some pvp’rs, guess the toxic lounge is big enough for the both of you)
This is why some people didn’t want a raid community to begin with.

It’s an armor function, that is open to the rest of the game to earn. If you don’t like it, take your self entitlement out the door before the next xpac, I promise no one will notice.

Am I the only one who thinks Gleam Saber’s 3s cooldown reduction on sword skills is powerful? Doesn’t this effectively make the 2 and 3 skills a 4 and 6 second cooldown respectively (obviously that depends on you using AA exclusively while they are on cooldown).

Not fully understanding the heat meter mechanic doesn’t help, but am I wrong in thinking this results in 100% quickness uptime? Something is wrong with my logic here.

WvW (for the most part) is a blob fight where you try and overwhelm your opponent with numbers, whilst trying to tag as many people as possible for the loot. I see arguments here about the cost that the WvW players will have to bear as you cannot earn enough gold in WvW – then get out of WvW, stop being lazy and play the game the like the rest of had to do to EARN our armor (and with that the ability to stat swap).

PvE is a gamemode driven by “AI” following a linear path that is nothing more than a puzzle solved by exploiting it’s limitations to farm loot like a slavering PvE zombie. Get out of PvE, stop being lazy and play the game like an actual human being….

Or just ignore the gamemode you don’t like (or obviously aren’t skilled enough to play) and be happy with what you have.

I’m biased since I’ve Engi mained since launch. Scrapper is what I currently roam with.

Power HgH build. Fairly meta with some minor tweaks. Mobility is the big weakness, and coordinated small groups using the chain root will get you every time, but for the most part it’s strong. Nothing can beat you 1v1 and only a couple of builds that can work you to a draw.

Aside from stats, that is the exact build I have played since scrapper was released with a minor tweak. Inversion Enzyme instead of Self Regulating Defenses. I use Elixir gun instead of bulwark for the extra condi clear and might stacking. I will swap in bulwark for Elixir S when fighting ranger’s or pistol thieves.

I use Bowl of Nopalitos Sauté for food.

I’ve played engineer for 4 years, and Scrapper for entirety of HoT, mainly in GvGs, but had my fair share of roaming, zerging or small scale. Here are some things that I have found out during that time.

1. Engineer was designed to be a jack of all trades. Therefore we do not excel in anything.
2. Because the current optimal builds are very defined, the balance leaves very little for engineers to do. This means that there is almost always a better option for a group.
- If you want heals, take ele, druid or guardian.
- If you want damage, take warrior, or necromancer
- If you need boons or damage mitigation, take revenant or guardian.
3. Guardian is needed for stability. Revenant is needed for resistance and damage mitigation. Elementalists are needed for ranged pressure and AoE control. Warriors and Necromancers are needed for burst damage to kill people through healing and damage mitigation.

Scrapper excels in none of these things. Only thing that sets us apart is our stealth application capabilities. This unfortunately isn’t necessary to beat other zergs on the field, therefore Scrappers usually become a lackluster pick. There will ALWAYS be a better class for the task, when talking about +50 man zergs.

4. Scrapper however works really well with smaller groups. If you are fighting a group of 20 players, you have a lot of space to make plays and move around. Scrapper can adapt to any situation or enemy, because our kits offer insane variety to our kitten nal. Gyros become a lot more useful when fighting smaller groups, because they don’t get cleaved down instantly.

Too often I see engineers using bulwark gyros in zerg, without getting any use of it. The bulwark gets destroyed instantly with all the excess damage floating around. If a warrior hits arcing slice around you, the bulwark will absorb the damage and explode. It’s really inefficient to take an entire utility skill just to negate one arcing slice.

However in smaller groups there is a lot less overall damage, making bulwark for example alot more viable.

Scrappers in general reward good players. The more you understand the game, and the class balance, the more you can achieve on the class.


To sum it up, if you want to play Engineer/Scrapper, small scale fights is the best place to do so. Regarding metabattle, the quickness Scrapper is currently the best build for WvW (someone even linked my youtube to the thread LUL).

Frontline Scrapper on the other hand is the most ridiculous concept I have ever seen. Scrapper does best when played as a backline utility support. If you pick a Scrapper, throw it into a frontline and pretend that you are being useful, you are just a lackluster warrior without CC, and little healing.

Switch Self Regulating Defenses for Inversion Enzyme. SRD is garbage and will kill you more often than not simply because you can’t condi clear. I also would switch Tool Kit for Elixir S. My build is basically the old HGH build with a Hammer. I also use Sneak Gyro and Elixir H (again HgH). I get why you are using Mortar Kit though. When I run into heavy ranged groups or solo Rangers I switch Elixir S to Bulwark for the reflect on the toolbelt.

You can do it with Scrapper. Hardest is with Hyleks, but with full reflects running doable.

Time your dodges to avoid the stuns, reflect like crazy and cleave.

The best ones are when I run in, don’t realize the Hyleks are there and have the wrong skills up.

Edit, it’s really a combination of CoR with it’s low cool-down plus the Cruel Repercusion trait. Block one CoR and you are kittened on the next one.

You can buy a CU lifetime sub. You still pay $1 a month though.

Nope. $1 per year, not month. That was the minimum they could ask, due to a ToS at Kickstarter.

I backed CU at Builders Booty, so 7 months free before sub. Plenty of time to figure it out. Plus Alpha access which has been fun.

I backed Crowfall at a higher level, but I’m more interested in the Eternal Kingdoms aspect of that game. The combat looks uninspired at the moment.

The best thing about GW2 for me has been the combat system, but that can only hold me for so long. Especially when there is no one to combat.

A good wvw build is about doing something other classes can’t do or can do as well. In case of engi slick shoes, moving reflect bubble and super speed. Flamethrower is just there for stability.

So waste a utility slot for one boon I can get elsewhere? Got it.

Or…

Maybe use Elixirs for that and might, and a weapon kit that synergises better (egun) so I can concentrate on the strength of Scrapper (hammer).

Not to say there can’t be viable FT builds, just not as much sustain as other builds.

I don’t think PPK is a great change, looking at the API numbers. Kills are just a measure of coverage and numbers. Two servers fighting each other both get points for killing each other, more or less regardless of how well they do, but they both gain a lead on the third server just for fighting each other; basically points just for logging in.

I couldn’t disagree more. Without PPK it’s coverage and numbers. We measured this a couple of years ago when PPK first came in, and skilled open field guilds and groups had more of an impact on the score with stomps during busy fight times than objective points did. There is now once again incentive not to get stomped.

The one problem I foresee is servers (like TC) who like to turtle and avoid fights now have more incentive to hide behind their walls and siege.

The opponent has to be performing an action, and the field is too easy to hop out of. I find it much easier to time interrupts with a shield.

The sixth trait of Perplexity Runes, which stacks Perplexity, is on a 15 second cool down. As you may remember, these Runes used to have NO cool down on interrupts. The Runes used to be wildly OP and were abused to no end (I’m guilty as charged, lol).

When the Runes were nerfed, Perplexity-centric builds pretty much died (for Engies at least). Burn-centric damage builds do much more damage now. It’s not even close.

Edit. So too does Bleed Damage if played right.

True enough. I still find it pretty powerful. Played correctly Engi can still stack a ton of confusion (Pry Par, Static Shot, 1 Interrupt, plus on Hit = 15 stacks). I also run Rocket Boots for Burn, On Crit Burn, On Crit Bleed. The almost passive confusion application along with Engi ability to apply/reapply other condis is amazing.

Perplex went from way OP to simply powerful.

If you are using Perplexity you should take advantage. Interrupts are your strength. Elixir X for transforms.

Tool kit – Pull (interrupt) – Pry bar
———-> P/S Static Shot – Static Shield (Interrupt) – Magnetic Shield (Interrupt) – Poison —-——>Volley
———————>Rocket Kick

Then AA to apply bleed until rinse repeat. You should have 15-20 stacks of confusion, with covering conditions, on crit burns, bleed, and assuming you are in their face fury every 10 seconds. Throw/drink elixir for condition cleanse. both Tornado and Rampage are good for applying interrupts as well, though rampage is better. Watch for retal in Tornado.

Oh, also, 2 sec cool down on pretty much perma regen and med kit drop.

Edit: This would be for WvW. For PvE which I don’t run a ton of, I’d switch out Toolkit for Flamethrower and take Juggernaut. I also noticed you said you run Sinister. I run Dire in WvW for the added survivability.

I usually use Energy and Corruption (Bloodlust if you are a power build) in WvW.

P/S Perplexity IMO is still the strongest WvW roaming/1v1 build.

Edit: I still run with the Scrapper trait line.

Edit to the Edit: The reason shield works better than hammer is the interrupts to proc confusion are much easier to time than hammer 5. There are also 2 interrupts on shield as opposed to 1 on hammer. Pretty easy to stack 20+ confusion with tool kit and the runes.

Actually, if you combo the leap finisher from your lightning field, you get another 1-3 interrupts (up to 4 total) just with hammer. It’s a very easy combo to set up. Usually I get at least 2 dazes from my leap skill, sometimes 3. Hammer also gives you a reflect and a block, and does way more dps, as others have noted.
