1. ANet JUST posted info on new megaserver structures that will address the PVE population issue. It will start on April 15th in low level areas and go world-wide later this year.
2. That Vista is pretty easy to solo, but maybe not at lvl 21. Skip it and come back to it later. Don’t get hung up on one thing. If it is too difficult right now, then skip it and come back.
3. If this is your first character, and you are level 21, then you are just barely beginning GW2. The game has a lot to offer; don’t give up so quickly.
4. Respawn rates are pretty good in most places. I really don’t think that is the problem.
5. When seeking advice about a particular in-game situation, make sure you let people know what profession you are playing. GW2 as a Warrior is a completely different game than GW2 as a Mesmer. People can give you more specific feedback if they know what profession you are playing.
6. If you NEED to do that Vista before advancing any further in the game, try a new approach. Try a different weapon set. Try different Skills. Check your gear and make sure you are using level appropriate weapons/armor. Keep in mind that you can just run past a lot of enemies without having to fight them. If you haven’t yet, learn how Dodging works and practice dodging during fights. I’ve soloed that particular Jumping Puzzle/Vista many many times, and I only fight one or two of the mobs. I just run past all the others.
No dueling in PVE zones. No thanks. Never.
You want to duel? Go to PvP arenas and duel your heart out. That is what that area is for.
If you don’t like the way dueling works in PvP arenas, then request changes to that part of the game. Don’t bring that crap to PVE.
You do realise that Duels dont affect Pve right? Tho, duelling was a part of waiting for long queues (Raids and Dungeons) in past mmo’s and training even when someone would teach you some moves when they know more than you the class you’re playing (even for pve bosses fight), your hate against duelling jsut delay your pve experience in a sense of boredon.
Ppl asking for the denial of such features that would benefit all kinds of players and not only for those who are found of pvp is just going backwards in time.
When you ask for devs (please no this, and no that) know this, you are denying a part of the game that would bring something for you, in a case or another when you least could expect.
Say no to content (even pvp when you dont like) = enjoying your empty world. (just see as the current state of the game is).
just a tip.
I know very well what I am saying “no” to. That’s why I’m saying “no”.
No dueling in PVE zones. No thanks. Never.
You want to duel? Go to PvP arenas and duel your heart out. That is what that area is for.
If you don’t like the way dueling works in PvP arenas, then request changes to that part of the game. Don’t bring that crap to PVE.
Simplest answer I can give is that it just isn’t as high a priority as other things we have been working on.
Why do you feel custom arenas do not work for those that want to duel?
I absolutely do NOT want open world dueling. It inevitably leads to harassment and I don’t want to deal with that nonsense. If changes need to be made to PvP arenas to satisfy those who want dueling, then PLEASE do that instead of open world dueling.
Black Lion Chests have some of the best loot in the game, but they are notoriously stingy. You will almost always get crap and feel cheated. ANet really needs to increase the amount of drops per chest and add some more mid-range drops to the chests so that there is a decent chance of getting something worth the price tag.
I regret every gem I ever wasted on keys, and probably never will bother with them again.
Instant dance party ensues at Vigil HQ :-)
You win, ANet. All is forgiven.
Before buying the Frost Wasp Logging Tool, I used Orichalcum Axes to harvest Ancient Logs in Frostgorge Sound. I would usually get 3 logs per node, but sometimes I would get 4 or 5 logs from a node using Orichalcum Axes.
Using the Frost Wasp Tool, I only ever get 3 logs per node.
Is this a bug, working as intended, or am I just having bad luck with my harvesting results?
I’m a new Guardian and decided to play with Shield builds. Am I missing something? My Shield doesn’t give me any Block Skills?
I say this to everyone at least once:
This is an MMO.
You are not a special snowflake.
You will never be a special snowflake.
Nothing you own will ever be truly rare or unique.
Get things because you like them, not because you think they’ll be rare or make you stand out. They won’t.
You are wise, Master Quarktastic. Words to live by. Er… play by… whatever.
However, I also would like to see more new gears that are not gem store items. I agree with you on that.
I don’t think we need any new gear mechanics like you suggested, though. I think ANet just needs to implement more gameplay gears than they have to this point.
The problem I see with what you are saying is that by simply adding new gameplay armors they hurt the gem store and cripple its income. And this is not what you desire. Their income needs to stay high (for the good of the game). Problem is (as I said) that making the game profitable hurts the game itself.
My suggestion avoids that.
I think they can do both. I don’t have the data to study, but it doesn’t seem that the introduction of Ascended Armors hurt Gem Store Armor sales any.
If they introduced new armors in the Gem Store and made those same armors craftable, that would probably hurt gem sales. But as long as they keep the two separate, it should be fine.
I really like the idea of the Living World and I think that Temporary Content is a great feature. It’s one of the best parts of GW2 for me.
I understand that it doesn’t appeal to all kinds of players, and that’s fine too.
Thing is, though… this is GW2. This is what the game is. Living World and the Living Story are major features of the game and probably always will be. If you really hate it that much then you probably need to find a game that suits you better.
If you like GW2 overall, but are disappointed with the kinds of content the Living Story delivered, then you might post a thread about the kinds of content and features you want to see in the next Living Story Season.
Yeah, that story happened in the past, so it’s not re-playable. Almost as if the World were somehow Living…
But I think it’s really cool that you are taking an interest, even at this late hour. Talk to your guildies, read the synopsis linked above, watch the videos on Youtube and you will be all set for when Living Story Season 2 starts.
Oh, I could get behind an “Orrian Liberation” campaign. I think that could be really great if done well. At present, I never go to Orr unless I need Obsidian Shards. It’s just a waste of space for me, and I’d like the opportunity to turn it into something new. Liberate Orr, cleanse the land of Risen, build a new Pact hub and use it as a jumping-off point to open up new explorable areas in that corner of the map.
Won’t happen in LS2, it seems, but maybe LS3?
Meh. I crafted my first Legendary, used it for a little while, and then switched mains. My Bifrost is just sitting in my Bank gathering dust. I earned it the hard way, but I can’t even be bothered to use it.
I even bought one of those Transmutation Splitters so I can move the Bifrost to my new main, but that character has an Ascended Jade Dragon Staff, and I like that skin better so I haven’t bothered moving it.
Legendary Weapons just aren’t a big deal. They are no different from an ascended weapon, except for the ability to change stats. While that utility feature is nice, I don’t really use it, and I don’t miss it. Legendary Bifrost? So what? Big deal.
The only thing special about Legendary Weapons is the price tag. Not worth it.
Gem store items are intended to be aesthetic and/or “toy” items, rather than pay-to-win items. It’s done on purpose.
The past year did see some modest additions of weapons and armors outside of the gem store. Ascended weapons and armors are craftable, and the new champ system introduced many new weapons to the game.
However, I also would like to see more new gears that are not gem store items. I agree with you on that.
I don’t think we need any new gear mechanics like you suggested, though. I think ANet just needs to implement more gameplay gears than they have to this point.
Thanks for the responses, folks. Good info to have.
I’ve noticed this happening the past 2-3 weeks. I often do multiple node runs in the same area with different characters. It’s just more efficient that way.
Lately I’ve noticed node locations changing much more often than they previously were. I’ve noticed the locations changing even if there isn’t a patch/update.
I like to guest to other servers if the node distribution is more convenient, and this change is making that impossible to do reliably.
Is there any info on this change or is ANet just kittening with us?
I expect that ANet will release new races and professions eventually, just not any time soon. As for making a new character, well, if they release a new race and a new profession at the same time… problem solved, right?
I’d love to see new Areas opened up. I love new maps and places to explore.
I don’t know how long it would take before I got bored of a new area. More than 30 minutes, but probably not more than a few hours. The basic answer to your question is that I will go there if there is something there that I want to do. After finishing map completion, I usually only visit maps if they have:
1. Harvesting nodes I want/need.
2. Jumping Puzzles I want to do.
3. World Bosses I want to fight.
4. Living Story content I want to complete.
That being the case, there are a couple of maps I go to every day I play. There are 2-3 more maps I go to once in a while for periodic harvesting/farming. There are 2-3 other maps I go to once in a while for periodic JPs. There are several maps I go to just for a few minutes to kill a World Boss. Living Story might take me to any map at all, but how long I stay depends on the content.
For me to keep going back to a new map area, it would have to have some of those things in it. The more of those things it has, the more likely I am to go there, and the more often as well.
What I would like to go to maps for is interesting Dynamic Events and Event Chains, but unfortunately these Events give no reward for my time, and they just aren’t very fun in general. Most Dynamic Events are pretty linear and become tedious if repeated.
Right now, Dynamic Events give XP, Karma, and Gold. The Gold isn’t enough to be worth the time. XP is useless right now (My main has about 300 unused skill points). Karma is more useful, but only marginally. There just isn’t anything I want to spend Karma on, so it accumulates and is largely ignored.
If Dynamic Event completion dropped a chest like a World Boss, then I would do them because there would be a reward involved. And since there are so many Dynamic Events in the world, I could cruise around the maps, trying different ones at different times to keep it fresh and interesting. I would much rather cruise around an interesting map farming micro-events like that than, say, Champfarmzerging Frostgorge Sound, even if the hourly “pay-out” were slightly less.
As for Orr, well, I just don’t like the area. It has events/bosses/nodes that I would do, but the area just isn’t very appealing for a number of reasons:
1. It’s ugly as kitten.
2. It’s too far away from everything else I want to do (WP fees).
3. Getting to Orr the first time is so time-consuming and irritating that I decided 1 character with Orr WPs was all I needed.
4. Getting around Orr is annoying because the areas are huge and packed to the gills with the most annoying mobs in the game, and WPs are often contested.
Thank you for starting this thread. I think it is something ANet spends a lot of time thinking about and dealing with.
LA will be rebuilt, and will remain the central hub of Tyria. It is not a “capital city”, it is neutral territory, and that is it’s primary value to the 5 races of Tyria.
My expectation is that LA will get a face-lift. It will largely remain the same, but there will be some old stuff removed and replaced with new stuff.
I really hope that Scarlet’s Breachmaker becomes a permanent fixture in the harbor. It’s too big to just go away. Depending on what it hit down there, it may remain largely intact and has a lot of potential. I’m sure Taimi would love to move in and take ownership of it.
I’ve been wondering if we will get an update on the 18th. I assumed so, but there has been no preview/announcement on the website.
Supposedly we are going to see a Features update, but I haven’t seen a date for it. Could be the 18th, but I’m beginning to wonder now.
There was also mention of an “Epilogue” update to wrap up Season 1 of Living Story. Not sure if that will be included with the Features update.
And no, Living Story is not “almost universally reviled”. Many of us like it a lot. It’s just that people like to complain more than they like to praise. There are a lot of fixes, changes, and additions I’d like to see, but LS is not standing in the way of those things.
OP I disagree with literally everything you said. I really enjoy Living Story, and I’m excited to see what ANet does in Season 2.
If you really want to know what I think about the whole “Expansion” issue, here it is:
If GW2 doesn’t announce a full feature expansion before the launch of Wildstar I am gone.
Hope you enjoy Wildstar!
To answer the question of the title of this thread, we shout for an expansion because if we don’t, it might never happen. The higher-ups need to see demand before they invest the funds to create the supply.
You’ve got it all wrong, man. ANet is doing expansions. That was always the plan. What they said at the start of LS1, and what they’ve been doing ever since then, is releasing expansion content as it is ready for implementation, rather than making us wait until it is all finished and releasing it all at once.
You are getting the expansion right now. You’ve been getting your expansion all along. The only difference between what ANet has been doing and a traditional expansion model is the release schedule. The content is going to be the same. The only difference is when you get the content.
Look at the release schedule for WoW:
Initial Release — 11/2004
Burning Crusade — 1/2007 (26 months later)
Wrath of the Lich King — 11/2008 (22 months later)
Cataclysm — 12/2010 (25 months later)
Mists of Pandaria — 9/2012 (21 months later)
It’s approximately 2 years between updates. That’s pretty typical.
GW2 was released in 8/2012, 19 months ago. It is way too soon to be comparing the two models. I understand there are some items on your wish-list that haven’t come out yet. Be patient. It’ll happen. By all means let ANet know what kind of content you are looking for. I am also looking forward to seeing new Areas and Zones, and would love to see a new playable Race or Profession. But complaining that it hasn’t happened yet, at this point in the life of the game, is silly and unrealistic.
Shouting for an expansion is a waste of your time and energy. Instead, try posting helpful comments about what kind of content you want to see prioritized in the upcoming year.
“As of March 18th, Alliance Supplies will stop dropping and you will not be able to receive any new Found Belongings or Found Heirlooms. Related to this, you will no longer be able to turn in Found Belongings and Found Heirlooms for items.”
Seems like we just went through this with the Scarlet Lair Cyphers. There are going to be players who will still have these items to turn in after 3/18. It would be really nice if those NPCs stuck around a little while to let the stragglers catch up.
On the whole, I would give Season 1 a 7/10.
I didn’t really participate in Flame and Frost. I joined the game at Retribution, and as a new player it didn’t feel accessible to me. So I am not grading the Flame and Frost arc at all.
I participated in the Southsun Arc, although I was still pretty new to the game. I spent most of that Arc following the Champfarm zerg. I give Southsun a 5, because the story was kind of uninteresting and it never seemed to go anywhere. After the wrap of Season 1 I still have no idea how Southsun figures into the main storyline.
Beginning with Dragonbash, the Living Story started to feel engaging and dynamic. The Dragonbash content was well done and a lot of fun, with nice rewards and gameplay. I give Dragonbash a 7.
The Living Story continued to impress me through Bazaar of the Four Winds and Cut-throat Politics, with BotFW being my favorite “Episode” of Season 1. The follow-through from Dragonbash to Cut-throat Politics gave a nice sense of continuity to the developing Storyline, which I think was much needed at the time. I give the BotFW/CTP Arc a 10/10.
I also really enjoyed the Queen’s Jubilee and Clockwork Chaos Arc. At this point it looked like the Living Story was starting to really hit, and I was excited to see what would happen next. I give the QJ/CC Arc 10/10.
The next two events, Tequatl Rising and Twilight Assault did not appeal to me. I felt like the Living Story kind of went off the rails a bit. Tequatl had no apparent link to Scarlet or the Living Story in general (and still doesn’t). And the Scarlet developments from TA just didn’t make sense to me. During this period I lost a lot of interest in the LS, and began to dislike Scarlet as a character and as a villain. I give TR/TA a fat 0.
The Tower of Nightmares Arc was a huge improvement in the Living Story in terms of presentation and storytelling, but it also made Scarlet seem like an even more improbable villain than ever. It was really cool to see permanent changes taking place in the world at large. However, The Nightmares Within content did not suit my playstyle (solo player) and I largely ignored it after it beat me up and took my lunch money. I did eventually run the Tower with some guildies and got to participate in the storyline developments. Although it seemed like the storytelling was improving, I felt that Scarlet was becoming an increasingly unrealistic villain, which undermined my faith in the storyline. This Arc was a mixed bag for me, so I give it a 5.
I ignored Fractured. I don’t do Fractals at all. I pretty much ignored Edge of the Mist as well, because I don’t enjoy PvP.
The Final Four I give a solid 9/10 (excluding EoTM). It was clear that the development teams spent a great deal of time and effort on these events.
The Marionette fight was very good overall, but I resented the poor team mechanics that made entire Overflows fail because of a few weak links in the player base. Teamwork is great, but the mechanics used in the Marionette fight sparked some of the most bitter animosity between players I’ve ever seen. The success of the event depended, literally, on the skills of the worst players participating in the event. The end result is that the event failed way more often than it should have.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed Scarlet’s Secret lair, and the reward system used for the update. The revelation of Scarlet’s Lair and the NPC conversations in Lion’s Arch and Divinity’s Reach helped to reposition the storyline back onto the tracks it had previously jumped. Not completely, but it helped a lot.
The Escape From LA/Battle for LA events were both very well designed and a lot of fun. The mechanics encourage teamwork while allowing for solo advancement, and accommodate on-the-fly coordination with any number of players. In my opinion, these mechanics should be the model standard of new large-scale event content going forward.
The rewards for the LA events are also very nice, except for the Meta Chest for completing the Battle for LA Achievements. As the final Meta Chest reward for the entirety of Season 1, I was expecting something special to commemorate the experience. I was disappointed in that regard.
tl;dr
Which brings me back to my Final Grade of 7/10. I would absolutely have given it an 8 if there hadn’t been so many bugs and hot-fixes. I am forgiving of the occasional adjustment here and there, but I have come to expect that each update will be followed by a series of fixes. I really shouldn’t have that expectation.

No.
Don’t get hung up on content that you may have missed. Look forward to the content that is still to come.
Just got the new patch and now I can’t get past the character selection screen.
Getting error 7:11:3:191:101
I’m looking forward to Season 2. I don’t share your concerns about temporary content and gem store offerings. I’m fine with both of those things.
My expectation is that ANet will apply what they have learned from Season1 to make sure that Season 2 is the best possible gaming experience they can deliver. I’m willing to forgive Season 1 mistakes and call it a learning experience.
I pretty much expect Season 2 to be much better than Season 1, and I can’t wait to see what ANet does with it.
I gave up on saving kids from Lion’s Arch. They seriously put the slowest, most idiotic Lionguards in charge of those kids. It takes them FOREVER to reach the exit, and they spend more time going backwards than forwards, going out of their way to attack Aetherblades that aren’t even in their path.
The kids escort is pure torture, and it doesn’t even reward you with civilian progress, so screw the little turds. They can fend for themselves.
What, the broomstick in the Gem Store isn’t good enough for ya? ;-)
No thanks. That’s not really a Living World is it? I’d rather keep looking forward to all the new content coming my way than mess about in dead content that isn’t relevant anymore.
Yeah, mounts would be cool if they were strictly a cosmetic item. Maybe a Move Speed buff, but no flying.
I don’t think ANet is looking to implement Mounts, though, so I wouldn’t hold my breath. Still. I think you are right about the HUGE PILE OF MONEYS that ANet would get in gem sales if they implemented your ideas, so… maybe?
Yeah, the “one time only” items always return periodically for another “one time only” sale at some point. It’ll be back, just keep your eyes peeled for sales and promos.
Either that or Scarlet thinks the voice comes from below ground….
There’s also the possibilty that her theory could be proved wrong!……
The voice could be from above ground disguised as a certain someone we know(ArenaNet said the Personal Nemesis was someone we knew) and Scarlet dosen’t even realize it….
The “Personal Nemesis” is your Order partner who sacrificed themselves when the Dragon attacked LA in your Personal Story quest. They are coming back as undead blah blah blah…
The thing that continues to annoy me is something that still hasn’t been answered and I don’t see how it possibly could be in these last two updates.
Where in the kitten is Scarlet getting the resources for this level of assault? You look at what she is building, her designs… we are talking about massive, large scale constructions that NO organization be they private or country up until this point has managed. The sheer scale of money, time, and raw materials… you can’t HIDE THAT.
Mining operations of that scale aren’t just tucked away in some small little cave. That much manpower doesn’t just hide in little huts all around Tyria. Bases of operations like the ones the Aetherblades had in Lions Arch don’t just happen without a LOT of someones noticing.
That freakin’ flying city that Scarlet hung that Marionette from… you mean to tell me NO ONE saw the movement of resources that would be required to construct that monstrosity and thought, “Gee, it’s awfully odd to see an army of dolyaks moving metal and ore towards a place that no one has any reason to inhabit…”
The only way it makes sense is if one (if not more) of the major cities of Tyria were either complacent or outright assisting Scarlet’s efforts. Would Arena.net be willing to set races against each other like that? I doubt it.
And that’s not even getting INTO the time investment for all these things. Hell, ONE of the constructs Scarlet has whipped together I don’t see as being possible to construct in the time frame she had… much less ALL of them.
Obviously she hacked the Trading Post.
Personally, I blame Evon.
I’m a PvE player.
The other issue for PvE players like me is the quality of the WvW community. Looking through the posts in this thread, most of the pro-WvW comments are rude and disrespectful at best, and many of them are outright hostile. That’s not the kind of community I want to play with, and it’s another big reason why I don’t enjoy WvW. It’s not an issue that is exclusive to WvW, but the competitive nature of the content seems to bring out the worst in people.
But it is fine for PVE players to spam threads bashing Pvp modes? Wvw players don’t do this about pve.
Pve players creating threads bashing Pvp modes because they have to go there for a Pvp achievement? THESE ARE NOT PVE ACHIVEMENTS IN THIS UPDATE. Wvw don’t do this about pve.
Yeah, the wvw players are the problem. Hahahahahahahahahaha
The wvw players, who are trying to make pve only players open minded about game options and fun, are the bad guys?
Wow. You blew my mind.
I can’t tell if you are being ironic.
This, and the fact that you now need to be lvl30 wvw rank in order to craft a legendary weapon. I think alot more people will be moving on to new games.
Fact? Please provide a picture or source that shows you need specifically rank 30 as a requirement for legendaries. I personally can’t find it.
I also have 4 world completions and have never encountered this problem you describe.
Source please.
……. No?
Source here:
Last item under the World vs. World section.
Will Wheaton’s Law. I’m just sayin’.
I’m a PvE player. I don’t do WvW or sPvP because it isn’t fun for me. I tried both. I got bored real fast and never felt like going back.
The amount of LW content in the WvW map is actually very small, and you don’t even have to do any WvW to complete it. You literally just talk to a couple of NPCs that are right there in your starting area. I’m not sure why anyone would have much of a problem with it.
There is an achievement that takes you further into the WvW map, but it’s totally optional and, frankly, the reward isn’t even any good for a PvE player. So skip it. No big deal.
I think ANet handled it well. The LW story asks you to step into the new map, but you don’t have to run around attacking other players to complete it. It’s a good design choice that respects the fact that not all of their players like WvW content and don’t want to be pressured into it.
I can’t speak for other players, but for me, I don’t like feeling coerced or pressured into content that I don’t want to do. I suspect many WvW players feel the same way about PvE content requirements for Legendaries and such. If you don’t want to do the content, it kind of sucks when the path toward your in-game goal takes you into that content without any other options.
I think the WvW experience as a whole could be greatly improved if the community started enforcing Will Wheaton’s Law.
Bad call, ANet. This is the wrong way to encourage participation. My dislike of WvW has reached an all new high.
Can we combine this thread with one of the thousand other times this has come up?
It’s a Living World, people. Love it or leave it, but don’t try to change it.
Well I wish you luck during the event. I’m going to pass on this one. I have no interest in being ganked during a pve story event.
But I guess the people who like to harass/bully others in non consensual pvp need their fix too. So have fun I guess..
Yeah, I’m with you on that one. I will probably check it out, but I won’t be spending any non-LS time there. Depending on how the achieves/rewards are handled, I may not participate at all.
It figures, though. We finally get a sizable new map addition and it is PvP oriented. Oh well.
I think edge of the mists is a WvW “overflow”, so yeah. i think that will happen.
Do I have to go outside the game to find out how to succeed at the LS content?
There is no “story” to follow here. The content is clearly designed not for guilds but for groups of guilds. In game chat is full of “learn to play” or rude degrading incomplete or incorrect shouted partial instructions. The mail we received is nothing but a direction pointer.I have no problem going outside the game. Duffys is great. This time I wanted to try and play as if I was an occasional player so I did none of the content the first day and didn’t do any looking for hints or tips. Everyone should try this once. If you do, you will see how bad it can be trying to figure out how to succeed. Is this the difficulty we were asking for?
I did the same thing and had no problem with the content. There are tips and guides in game if you pay attention to them. I just followed the LS star on my UI and got all the info I needed. This update was well designed and implemented, and I liked it a lot.
TriviaI study literature. I’m a critical writer. I know a thing or two about storytelling. You want to know how I would do it better? Alright, here goes, some points off the top of my head in no particular order:
ANet is aware. What matters is what they will do about it, and we won’t know that until the Scarlet LS wraps up and we see what they do with the next Living Story. If they are able to take what they have learned and make a truly enjoyable Living Story next time, then I can forgive them for Scarlet as a “learning experience”.
I just wish we could get some metrics on how many people are actually enjoying ( not just playing, but actually enjoying) Living Story. If Living Story is such a success, then prove it to us. Show us the overwhelming support for it. If not — and the majority of players do not want Living Story — then admit you made a mistake and put an end to it. Stop trying to shove it at us whether we want it or not.
I enjoy it. Living Story is the #1 reason why I’m still playing GW2. And I don’t know what “the majority of players” want, but I won’t assume that the majority of players agree with my opinion. You’d have to be some kind of egomaniac to do that.
