Stealth in MMO's will always be overpowered

Invisibility is the biggest mind game of all.

And that is why invisibility will always be op.

Isnt that the whole point of the class, though?

High skill floor, High skill ceiling, squishy class with very little damage mitigation besides several fleeting seconds of asking the opponent to guess where said player might be sounds like a decent trade off to me.

Unless you’re willing to armor the thieves better or give them visible damage mitigation, as I mentioned before. That’s also fine.

It’s a beautiful game for what it’s worth.

The dev team seems afraid to touch it in terms of expansion and additional content, though. Everything dropped recently has been a polish or rehash of existing content, with the exception of Dry Top.

I’m watching, but for some reason they aren’t moving at a pace quick enough to keep constant interest.

Sunfish actually did the the most efficient thing since proving a negative is kind of hard.

You’re asking him to prove that something doesn’t happen within a timespan. The only feasible way to present evidence of that is to provide video evidence with a timer in between air procs.

Even then he can’t prove it’s not happening, he can only provide a body of evidence that favors his claim. He is bringing it up on the forums for others and the devs to verify if it’s accurate, he could just have filled out a bug report, but this is more efficient in getting turn around since the forums have higher visibility.

Whether it’s actually an issue or not is irrelevant when reality is that this is one of the best ways to deliver the message if it is an issue since you can’t prove a negative and having other players back up your claim is the best kind of evidence you could provide unless you are capable of spending time to produce a video.

All of that is well and good, but if you’re going to make a claim that something is not working as intended, you should have some kind of concrete evidence supporting that claim before asking for a field test.

I honestly don’t care whether it’s broken or not. If you say it is, and want devs to fix it, it stands to reason that something led you to that conclusion. Asking someone to investigate a whim is an insult to both their time and yours.

Snipping to address some points. I’m tired.

Seeing as balance in the game is about making every class viable within 1 role, it kind of has to be that way.

? Since when is balance making every class good at doing one thing? Speccing should allow classes to do other roles to a satisfactory manner. It was one of the selling points of GW2.

Making thieves better at map mobility but worse total damage/1v1 potential than mesmers (really the only other class reliably competing for roaming dps roles) gives both a role. If you just have as much damage as a mesmer, you make the latter basically obsolete.

Says who?

For that matter, who says that 1v1 prowess [if we are discussing roles] belongs to the mesmer?

The official GW2 Wiki for thieves says that they are “deadly in 1v1 fights”.

Mesmers “make sure every fight is balanced in their favor”.

Thief isn’t great when caught in an even 1v1 or 2v2 when their partner is some bruiser class, but you can’t balance around poor use of the class. Thief isn’t meant to be good at skirmishing (bashing faces into one another). It is meant, according to past dev comments, to be great at creating and winning unfair fights. I’d say it does that to a T.

“Best at winning unfair fights” is not a role. It is proof you are not sleeping at your keyboard.

Apologies if I come off as harsh. I’m really tired of people saying “but you can be the best sidekick!” as a core argument for why Thief is okay.

And, I’d like to mention that no, I am not looking for more damage. I’m looking for the sustain (be that through blocks, evades, toughness or otherwise) built into the core thief so that they can be competent at 1v1. Instead of being a free bag/kill. Bursting down x class and calling that skill is boring. If I choose to pit my class against any other class though in a 1v1, the victor should be the one most skilled, rather than the one less encumbered by the mechanical hindrances of their class.

To assert anything otherwise because of a short range teleport that uses half of the resource pool a class uses to deal damage is something between asinine and petty, at least as far as I’m concerned.

Avoid exclusive content to reward minorities

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

I think exclusive rewards for completing challenging content is not only acceptible, but mandatory to ensure that there is a healthy pool of players (regardless of their intentions) willing to complete the content.

Let’s be honest. There are a significant amount of people who do content specifically for the prestige rewards, specifically to show them off . You cannot blame or punish them for that attitude, because if they do not assist the playerbase that does challenging content for the sake of challenging content, they will have a harder time grouping up to do the content. I do not know to what extent grouping for raids will suffer, but it would behoove you to ensure that the players, regardless of their determination, can share a common goal.

This is Guild Wars. I think your ability to organize, lead, or adequately be part of a well-forged group should determine the complexity of the content you can complete, including raids. And I think that it’s certainly fine to have specific rewards for doing specific content a certain way. You dont need anything in this game that is prestiged to play or do well.

In regards to the nerf-to-buff. You have to look at non-numerical things (at least in case of thief), such as Shortbow 5.

Thief are in such a rough state right now because they have perks that they do so well that if you give them too much, they would become irreplaceable.

yknow, thats another thing.

Vertical mobility at the cost of half of a thief’s initiative?

I dont think that mobility is worth nerfing the rest of their core.

Why aren't heavy DPS builds used? (pvp)

in Thief

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

Because in pvp you are rarely 1v1, and mobility is limited to stealth, steal, one utility skill and SB.

all of those are all on the bottom half of the trait bars.

For thieves, its either “do a lot of damage and be incredibly squishy”

or

“do slightly less damage and have a good chance of getting away if backup is provided to your target”

And many thieves use 0/6/x/x/x because the 20% damage provided from executioner is plenty for DPS/ Invigorating precision.

A good portion of thieves that have steal focused playstyles run x/6/x/x/6, with mug if they feel inclined.

What is the state of Thief class in PVP?

in Thief

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

Thieves excel at decapping undefended points with their unparalleled mobility and +1ing even fights to quickly turn the tide.

I laughed.

You should get a job in advertising. You’re good at making general mediocrity seem like a strength.

Your job is to burst down squishies and important targets. You are an assassin that ganks players. You help your friends by ambushing your targets. You do not 1v1. You have no need to.

Didn’t Arenanet market “no role-locking” as a selling point of their game? A thief specced for 1v1ing should be able to 1v1. The current "No, even if you’re dps you dont get to skirmish, go sit on the point until the team gets back or “plus 1 because thats what you do” " is atrocious and I refuse to agree with the current consensus that this is fine.

Thieves are actually fine. It’s just a lot of thief players expect to be able to instantly down people without any risk to themselves. So when their fragile builds fail, they come here to complain about things being OP. It’s just more of the attitude of “My build is supposed to beat X” that is so prevalent here.

If I can speak for myself, I don’t expect to instagib anyone. The fact that I have an incredibly hard time putting out respectable dps due to Thief’s low HP pool, coupled with the fact that other classes can now instadown players (from stealth, mind you in some cases) doesnt sit right with me, because I’m putting in lots of effort with no forseeable reward.

Thieves cannot sustain long enough to get the job done in most cases. No blocks (DD not included), crippled evades (because evading thief was too op), and all damage mitigation shoehorned into stealth (which can be crippled too.)

I’d be fine with that difficulty if there was not, at the same time, a reliable means for the majority of the other classes to simply press one button and gain a period of stark invulnerability.

I’m not asking for classes on a platter. I enjoy Thief because its hard to play.

It should not, at the same time though, be almost impossible to win with in most 1v1 settings.

Improving Thief Idea: No CD on Weapon Swap

in Thief

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

I’m not a big fan of this idea for a few reasons.

1) Having a cooldown on weapon swaps is important for the “ebb and flow” of combat. What I mean by this is that there are certain opportunities that you, or your opponents, can take advantage of when a weapon swap occurs. Without a cooldown on weapon swaps, I think thief would be given an unfair advantage to some degree, or at least an unnecessary one. Seeing your opponent swap weapons, for most classes, is an important tell that good players will take advantage of. “Alright, that draghonhunter just swapped to his longbow, I need to watch for a good time to use any reflects I have and also try to close the gap to him to make his weaponset less effective.” Weapon swapping having a cooldown gives windows of opportunity.

2)This game gets pretty spammy with skills at times. For example, look at engineers and their kits. Any engineer who runs a multiple kit build does, to some degree, spam their skills off cooldown. They might do it with a purpose for each skill, but the point remains that not having cooldown on the swaps itself allows them effectively just go from one kit to the next pressing 2 through 5 (in varying orders) and be semi-effective. I realize since thief uses initiative this wouldn’t necessarily be a problem, but I think you would have to accompany such a change with a baseline initiative return on weapon swap for it be meaningful, and that would probably lend itself to spamming abilities more than thinking about when to skillfully use them.

3) This would be a unnecessary power creep for the thief class that would enrage players of other classes, especially warriors. Warriors already have to invest in a particular traitline to get a 5 second weapon swap, and they have cooldowns on their weapon skills as well. It would just seem like a slap in the face to warriors to get a better version of their fast hands baseline, when warriors have been asking to make fast hands baseline for a while now. I just don’t think our class needs to have a better version of a mechanic that the players of another class consider to be core to almost all of their builds.

Re: #3, I don’t think that “slap in the face to X class because that is their mechanic” is a valid reason for scrapping an interesting concept for another.

Re: #2, I disagree for the same reason you shared. Thieves have an initiative pool, which makes all of their skill usage restricted even without the weapon swap CD. I see that Swap/SB5 away is probably going to be an issue with this proposal, but I wouldn’t say the same about spam. The drain each skill has on ini would probably add another layer of complexity to thief instead coupled with this change. Thieves may be more cautious to not attack all out because they know they may have an option to bail if they have misread the opponent.

Re: #1, I agree with this.

Neural.1824 does have a point. – People who show up on the forums and say “grow thicker skin” are typically the ones that are harassing, bullying and causing trouble in chat.

“Grow thicker skin” is common sense. The internet makes people in general more insensitive about other people’s feelings because there are few if any repercussions for saying something damaging.

That’s one of the neat things about having your account name and number shown on the forums. Someone being a troll or causing some grief in game? Add them up and then search the forums for posts. Catch them being a hypocrite and then deflate them in front of everyone the next time they post.

And isn’t this also harassment? Actively seeking to damage someone’s reputation because they did or said something you didnt like elsewhere?

Azure The Heartless.3261

What should we do if outnumbered? I’d like to hear your thoughts as to how being able to flee that far, that fast would be anything short of necessary for wars that were not specced for bunker when confronted with odd numbers?

I’ve started using GS in pvp, and I am all too happy to #5 right the kitten off of a point if a zerg/group comes to pick up my opponent. Much of the time, I still get expertly snagged and melt before I can even get away, even specced for condi clear.

While I am disappointed in your unsatisfying opponent, I should not have to have my escape culled just because of roaming warriors that have eyes bigger than their stomach, if you get what I mean.

I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with running away when you see trouble coming. I just find it wrong that one class can use a certain partial build to become unstoppable and uncatchable if they suddenly want to run away from combat.

I’ve only seen two or three players actually do this in PvP, it’s most common in WvW. The players who do this in PvP typically just kite any enemies who try to kite them in circles around the map, while decapping any point they find unattended.

I understand this, but seeing as how warriors are perpetually visible and lack stealth, clones, or RTL/mistform to pretty much negate damage when they are retreating, I don’t think there’s any way that you could force roaming warriors to be catchable if they decide to retreat without gutting warriors that have a valid reason to run as well.

I don’t think you should be tethering “cowardly” to “warriors” in this respect. there was a cowardly player that happened to be a warrior, that burned his whole utility bar to get away from you.

Iiits a shame that he got away. As a Warr, I can hunt people like that down because I tend to have a higher swiftness uptime than most warrs. I’d count a heavy class retreating a bagless victory though, or start saving spike damage for the inevitable run.

A question on behalf of veteran players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azure The Heartless.3261

Azure The Heartless.3261

Follow up question: What use is it to make a blog post that only really affects people who don’t yet play the game?

Hi Puddles,

First of all, we at ArenaNet very much appreciate the support that all players that have played the game for so long have given us. Without you guys, your love of the game and how you spread the word around you, things would clearly not be the same.

Today’s blogpost about the New Player Experience will not have as many visible effects to you specifically as it would have for a brand new player, that knows very little about the game. The new direction system should help you get a clearer and more useful top-tight UI, but also give your new characters better rewards.

As you noted, it is mainly targeted at new players, those that need it the most. We want their learning experience to be better so that they, too, can become veteran players of Guild Wars 2 one day! Learning to play a brand new game, and MMOs tend to be more on the more complex side of videogames, can be a daunting and hard task.

We want more people to be able to walk this path you walked and this is why we implemented the New Player Experience system, to create a route that new players can walk and feel rewarded along the way.

Again, thanks for your support!

I’d like to reiterate that our problem is, I assume by majority consensus, not that we cannot burst tanks down fast enough, but that we cannot survive long enough to implement a plan of action that would work against tanks.

If I can be frank, its missing the point. we have the slipperiness to kite tanks well enough, but it is offset at the moment by our glassiness when that mobility is not available.

We don’t want -easy- combat. At least, many of us do not. What we want is a reasonable amount of time to act on a strategy.

If any dev is reading this, take a look at the balance changes regarding thief and consider making us less squishy first and then implement any needed damage scaling in the iterations after.

I love the backpack but I understand others who want it in the slider.

I don’t agree with those who are overreacting though as if it is this horrible tool of torture.

This.

Hearing “SaVe YOUrSElvES!” all the time is more annoying than this thing.
If you want to cram it into a slider, it should go into dialogue. If you can handle anything there, you can handle this.

If replica job o tron is wiping your train you may have to consider reevaluating your focus.

I’ve experienced nothing but disappointment from Anet.

First time play through was kinda cool, because everything was new.

Then it got stale by the time I started my 5th or 6th character.

I hardly log in anymore, and I don’t expect anything great to come anytime soon.

Did you read your post?

You did the same content six times, enjoyed it the first four times, and suddenly experienced nothing but disappointment?

???

Why not just take a break and wait for the new content, or, even better, help someone newer do the content you’ve played so much while you wait for something newer?
What do you expect? A new game every year for a one time fee?

Cause they’re doing pretty well with the LS, Imo…

If you guys have a valid way to replace the RNG aspect of fire and air sigils with skill-based versions that you’d feel less inclined to complain about, then let’s hear it. I’m all for skillful play.

I am not, however, for thinly veiled “Zerkers do too much DPS, my cele build should survive everything” complaints. I know some of that mind are hiding somewhere.

If there’s a problem, suggest a fix. ‘Cause I sure as hell don’t know how to improve a sigil that literally says “This skill probably will go off if you crit, lol”. If you want to start guaranteeing flame blasts and lightning strikes in exchange for them proccing at “Random” times, I’m all ears.

Screen filling on a game otherwise artfully designed, where the designers want you to notice the time it took to put the landscape together

World bosses tend to have ~80 character models at a time swinging elaborate effects at its legs, mounts would tax that even further

Mounts would only be viable in PVE. for that matter~

We can port anywhere in the world for dirt cheap

Wait. Doesn’t this mean that Scarlet Briar lives as well? Makes you think. And while we are at it, the mentors also live. Cool. All the possibilities!

Do you guys think that there’s a middle ground between ultra hard and easy?

For example, I think we could clean up some of the issues with the Shatterer and just make it a more engaging experience. So rather than spending the entire fight hiding under his right paw he could, say, turn his head and attack that area? :] It doesn’t have to be hard, just a little more involved.

We tried to put in a few changes here and there when we added the new world boss timers. Reactions varied.

Surprise punishing stacking is a plus.

If every player conveniently lined up in a row and attacked a monster’s leg, if it had a hint of sentience it would wipe all of them.

People that care do tend to rage instead of quitting. However, if this goes on for long enough, those raging players eventually stop caring and quit.

Truth here.

I’m mad that I essentially have to wait a quarter of a year for a die throw on “will my class be enjoyable to compete with”, but I’m not going to keep doing that forever.

I care about the game now. I want to have a nontoxic interchange with the devs. I want to spend my money here. I want to come home after work and relax here. I’d like to compete here, and when there’s something I see as relatively minor and not requiring three-six months to at least -attempt- to fix, and on top of that no ‘we know, we’re working on it’ from devs occasionally, then that gets under my skin. It feels like, indirectly, they’re telling us “this is what we’re doing, and if you don’t like it, tough.”

That may very well be the case, I suppose. The possibility is there, but I’m willing to hope that it isn’t so that I can continue seeing this as a source of entertainment.

Again though, that will not last forever. I’ll be angry, I’ll be sassy until I come to the conclusion that there’s no point in (concisely, mind you) voicing my complaints, and then I will go elsewhere. That may happen today, it may happen a year from now, couple months, who knows.

All I’m attempting to do personally is reach out to the devs to assist me in stopping my departure for as long as possible, because this would benefit both of us.

RE: “You guys just care about action.”

No. I’d like to talk to someone. I sure as hell respect the devs when I am directly addressing them, and if you have a reason for doing x or y when the community is averse to it, then For goodness’ sake, let us know. At least then the people that follow the forums can pass that information on and have a time frame they can use to expect fixes, and hold off on complaints until that time. Gaile, for instance, does a fantastic job with explaining why a negatively-received change is implemented.

Instead of assuming we’re all charr animals that cant be appeased with some kind of transparency (if that is indeed the assumption), how about instead you give us the same benefit of the doubt that many of us are giving the balance team by:

1.) Not deleting [Thief]
2.) Not quitting

I am sure several players here have a solid grasp about what the players want and can probably assist in helping balance to a reasonably happy medium.

It’s literally in lore, I don’t know why people are pretending that somehow Anet promised that they would never, ever sell us back mounted wings due to it being against the nature of all good mmos or something.

I’m all for bikinis and goggles and underwater themed stuff, but there’s no argument that wings are this completely new, unfamiliar concept to Guild Wars.

1. Gemstore conversion needs to account for less than 400 gems, AND odd values.

2. NPE would be easier to digest for veteran players if they didn’t have annoying pop-ups. And the NPE lacks a crucial system to teach fields and finishers.

3. WvW balancing could use some love, and I’m glad you’re looking into that.

4. Players want new content, and I’m guessing you can’t afford the manpower to do both new content, and polishing. I would prefer polishing over new content, but that’s me.

5. Skill point implementation. At least make it cost cheaper? I get the idea you want people to put map exploring with trait acquisition, and that’s fine. And you have the idea that vets should be more than able to pay the resources to bypass the traits. That’s fine too. Buuuut they are costly. If I were to count in the hours of farming loss to buy traits or do events to get them for free, I would only get the bare necessities. Not really worth getting them all.

This, 100%. Concise, constructive, helpful, easy to back.

The problem is not the nerf.

The problem is the nerfs will continue to happen because people cannot accept that “good” and “warrior” can exist in the same sentence, and every domination by a warrior is not due to skill, but due to [ insert intrinsic class mechanic here] that is such a large crutch that the losing player would not have done any better if the warrior controller was a monkey; even though we have to gear specifically just to stay alive now, and are generally at a huge disadvantage against a condition-specced anything.

I’m fine with the adrenaline change. it won’t stop the qq though. bad players that encounter warrior will just move on to [mobility/armor/melandru/condiclear/bleeds/hammer/health/ire] OP until the class is just as sandbag as it was at launch.

Jokes aside, traps aren’t as bad as people say, but they still reward DH players with a hefty amount of damage on utilities with very little cast time, and are invisible. I can see why they’re being complained about, and for classes that… depend on melee to be viable in pvp, having a lone guard contest a point solo for because of trap drops is more than a little irritating.

Shield warrior is OP, how many other infinite blocks for 3 seconds on 20ish seconds cooldown are out there?

Since you asked:

Shield Stance is a 3 second block on a 30 second cooldown.
Gear Shield is a 3 second block on a 20 second cooldown.
Counterattack is a 3 second* block on a 15 second cooldown.
Riposte is a 2 second* block on a 15 second cooldown.

*Works if you are not within melee range of an enemy.

While Counterattack and Riposte do not work exactly like Shield Stance does, it will accomplish the same thing in many scenarios, with the benefit of having a much shorter cooldown. This is one reason why it is worth considering using sword off-hand instead of shield.

Thanks for prooving my poing… only a few skills compare to shield warrior and not all of them are infinite block.. riposte and couter attack its only 1, sucks as a block skill so it only leaves engie shield comparable with warrior. (guardian focus and elem arcane shield are on a 3 block counter which also sucks).

I don’t think your point was proven. Riposte is a multiblock. In fact, it’s impossible for it NOT to be a multiblock when fighting a giant, because of the standard skill lineups that all giants seem to share. The duration of Riposte is long enough to block anything you could possibly want to block from a Giant; the extra duration of shield block thus does not matter at all. Shield 4 is totally worthless versus a champion or legendary mob. Sword 4 is not. Sword is clearly superior, and there is absolutely no reason to ever run a shield for the block in PvE unless you’re already also running offhand sword, and need even more blocks.

Furthermore, the person you’re responding to forgot about Shelter (same cd as shield block), and Guardian’s Focus Block (36s cd traited), the first one being actually infinite, and the second being effectively infinite when fighting a giant.

You wouldn’t ever run /Shield when fighting a giant. You’d run */Sword, and Greatsword. And by "", I mean “Axe”, because it’d be stupid to run MH Sword or Mace.

Assuming Rule of Cool isnt in effect.
