New Idea for Commander Tags

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

It’s also not uncommon for people to buy these just for trackability/identification. Certain guild leaders do this in particular. It’s nothing about being able to command anything, just a blue icon above their head that says “here I am”.

In LA on my server on any given day, there are 10-20 commanders in LA, and I guarantee that less than a quarter of them have seen time in a ‘commanding’ role in WvW or leading a zerg in PvE. The rest are “bank commanders”.

An earned, red variant of the commander tag would be my suggestion, that way you know they have the trust of the players and they can actually ‘command’ a squad or group of players in a given situation. Someone that’s worth listening to instead of ‘do we trust this guy?’.

What I’ve always done for both the Users and upper Management is to keep my focus on presenting a clear view of “Where we are and Where we’re headed.” regardless of the project. In that manner a consistent message is presented that answers the most nagging questions of all folks.

The problem I see with Anet is that no one seems to be able to answer that legitimate concern. To make matters worse the replies we do get seem to reenforce the feeling that they don’t know either.

I had Imryldyeen come out of my welfare ancient karka chest (Anet’s attempt at an apology and recompense for missing the Nov ‘12 karka finale, having participated in all other events), and to me that was a kick in the teeth. Yes it was a named exotic but no I still couldn’t land that pre, even though, as above, the skin is shared with The Legend. The only good thing to come from that chest was the 20-slot bag.

Also, compared to today’s prices, The Legend was ridiculously cheap (~120g). Even back then there was this undeniable voice in me that screamed DON’T DO IT!!

rhael, DeceiverX, rather well said. Some great ideas which I personally will applaud, however there’s a problem. The people at Anet don’t seem to give these threads very much credence, even though the information within is probably invlauable. The communication of these threads to the appropriate people is also something that’s lacking.

No, sadly, here we’re just the forum users. As much as we’d love for them to sit up and pay attention to some of our great ideas, it won’t happen… not until 1. the people who can put up red posts start actually taking heed and implementing this information, and the processes behind them, and 2. the policy is either amended or abolished.

Gaile’s doing a great job for what it’s worth, in the position she’s in, considering she’s bound also by the very same policy.

Home Instance & The "Mini's Farm"

Adding to this idea, regarding the mini’s, perhaps we could have a designated area with a large plinth or something to have the mini’s mounted on, and roaming about freely, perhaps with a mini landscape to wander around in or something.

I keep thinking about all the mini’s that were in my Hall of Monuments, and while a few of them made noises, all of them were stagnant and leashed to one spot (unless you had more than 19? and then you could switch them around). These were on a platform as well, but with the home instance idea I was thinking something about 4 or 5 times bigger in overall size; kind of like their own little home environment. Think of Zaishen Menagerie for miniatures.

Imaginos, so have the events with the Ogre Wars and the Dredge Commisar, but these don’t get any attention either. These are too easily bugged and have key items attached to them for collections purposes, so a lot of people potentially can be doing them at once.

Why is it so easy for Anet to ‘fix’ stuff that is originally overlooked by them, then exploited by us, and yet so hard for them to fix a series of events for the betterment of the game (improving the experiences with collections)? Neither takes more thought or planning than the other.

Putting up banners in the Pavilion

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Like all good farmers I drop banners once in a while for the benefit of all my fellow farm-mates. But I have just realised a confusing little glitch (or two). When I’ve gone to collect the bonus for MF it comes up on the buff bar as Guild Item Research instead.

Also when I go to refresh a certain buff from a given banner, and the original banner is gone but replaced by another of the same buff type (say from another guild), it doesn’t reset the time of that buff on the bar, but tells me that I have this (fresh) buff, which I actually don’t have.

This is rather confusing and misleading and I’m lead to believe that something about putting these banners up in the pavilion is broken.

Soft Wood Planks

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this yet, but I found I ran out of soft wood logs when refining into planks quicker than any other wood type, and the reason why is it takes 4 logs to refine rather than 3 like for every other wood type.

Is there a reason behind this? This wood is no easier or harder to get than any other, but I had noticed even before the patch that soft wood planks cost a bit more than even seasoned or hard wood, which are 1-2 tiers above it. I see no reason why soft wood planks should need 4 logs rather than the normal 3 for refinement like every other wood has.

Maybe its time for an Anet survey ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

So how does ANet get solid, detailed, informed feedback from the other 70%+?

The way they usually do – by voting with their feet.

The bottom line is you can’t make anyone do a survey. This 70%+ are probably too engrossed in the game, going along with the ride. New players, while being freshly handheld and spoonfed, are subjected to toxic in-game text from other disgruntled players. Before you know it, these new players lose interest, not because of the content/story/etc. but because of the other players, either in map chat or within a given guild.

Behaviour breeds behaviour.

Players new into an environment such as an MMO are easily influenced. If the overall feel is positive, they’re likely to stay longer and enjoy the game for what it is. However it won’t take too long for the veil to be pulled back on the real state of the game. No survey will stop people from abandonning a skinking ship.

Unable to finish Sanctum Sprint

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

First I’ll be clear, I’ve finished SS hundreds of times before already. However it seems that now it’s become somewhat of a lag-a-thon and getting from one point aerially (using #3 skill) is more pot luck than intended mechanics.

Getting past checkpoint 5 for me is now virtually impossible. I’ve tried every single way known to get to the other platform and even when I DO make it across, lag has the last say as to whether I did or not.

This is MASSIVELY FRUSTRATING as the end can no longer be gotten to thanks to not just occasional lag spikes (which this game mode was always prone to), but any lag at all and it seems you can’t get near your destination. This is an old complaint, I know, but it hasn’t gotten any better or been improved any over the course of its duration in the game. It’s now a case of being extremely lucky if one can finish this at all. The game mechanics are far too susceptible to lag.

For me it was VERY nostalgic.

I will say a rather big thanks to the teams that went to all this trouble, to give the original Glint’s Lair the nod that it got. Everything was faithfully reproduced as much as it could be into this instance… the enemies themselves (ok they’re modelled on icebrood, but yeah) and even using mechanics similar to the Scarlet battle with colour-coded protection auras, etc.), the music and the ambience of the instance… wow, just wow.

I even went through the entire library for an even bigger dose of nostalgia. One of the best hours I’ve spent in this game. The way they’ve FINALLY stayed true to recollections of lore, and even at the end, furthering that lore to the current instance (Tyria realtime) gets a big tip of the hat from me.

Thanks to those who made that instance worthy of visiting, especially to GW1 veterans who really appreciate the harking back to what made that game great. I got plenty of screenies to add to my collection of desktop wallpaper shuffle as well.

The DPS Race Continues...

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Meta-Events-The-Great-DPS-Race

More than 4 months ago I posted this thread. Today the mechanics behind it still have not changed.

In an effort to keep up with the achievements that have just been release in the newest feature pack, it seems logical enough that people would want to get a variety of champ bags to unlock the ‘Hero of the People’ achieve (which it seems is bugged, by the way). It’s become increasingly difficult because of the megaserver situation to find a map with less players so your DPS actually counts towards getting loot from the boss, and not just from the big chest at the end.

Who else is in the same boat?

Can we get a word of advice (red post perhaps) from someone who can say why this solution was implemented, and a best course of action for rectifying it?

Do any of you ever buy black lion keys?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I’m curious.

As it stands it seems to me that the average stuff you get from a black lion chest is no where near worth the price of keys from the gem store.

The only real incentive is the chance of getting one of the permanent contracts or the endless tonic. However the chance of getting these seems so small that I’m not even tempted to dish out loads of gold for a gamble; I can’t help but feel I will be very disappointed.

At the moment the whole black lion key system is pretty unsatisfying. I know ArenaNet need to sell gems to keep the game running, but do many people actually spend them on keys? Would they not sell more gems if keys were at a reasonable price?

Firstly, about the only thing these are good for is to get more boosters to increase speed of levelling alt’s. I can’t see any practical reason why you’d go out and buy these in any other case.

I used to buy these when I first started, but they’re hardly worth the value that Anet wants to heap on them, causing a rather big disparity between cost and worth. I’ve never even seen one drop in the whole time I’ve been playing (since 3-day headstart), and the likelihood of one dropping anywhere in the game is so remote, and the chance of getting something of any real value is even more remote. It’s like they’re deliberately sharpening the saw before they cut their leg off.

And I’m sorry, but 3,000,000+ accounts x ~$60 per = quite enough to keep both staff paid and servers up and running for a long while to come. Selling gems and other MTA’s through their store is just gravy.

It’s been mentioned heaps of times before, it’ll continue to be mentioned heaps more times until they do something about it. Nothing Anet released in this game comes without a breakage of some kind. In-house QA testing clearly isn’t good enough. Load up the game properly with real players with real accounts and real toons being played in the upcoming content to test for breakages. It’s really that easy, and Anet flat-out won’t take part in it. They’d save themselves lots of $$$ hand over fist from reduced fixing times and patches if they’d just get a PTS rolling. To be honest they’d be stupid not to consider this option.

Embers & Ice Storms

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

I wanted to bring to people’s attention this seemingly too-random mechanic that has been added to two of the events that I (and quite a few others) do as part of my daily.

Ever since the bosses got harder and the timer gizmo started up, the mechanics of these two events (namely, the Fire Elemental in Thaumanova Reactor and the Frozen Maw in Wayfarer Foothills, respectively) have two rather annoying entities that are throwing massive spanners in the works.

Please note at this point: I’m not complaining about extra mechanics of the events, however it’s more the random and indestructible nature of them.

Here’s a classic example of the event as it stands now. The final boss at each event spawns, and after a given period of time (at the Fire Elemental it’s almost right away after it starts taking damage, at the Frozen Maw it’s not long after the boss gets to 50% health and transforms into an Icebrood Colossus) the embers/ice storms will spawn. I’ve noticed these entities take some damage, but it’s nothing ‘direct’ like straight DPS, more something like a retaliation mechanic that can make them lose health. Having never played either of these events on a character that does retaliation, I don’t know for 100% sure but that’s my guess.

Anyway, both these entities have aimless, unpredictable travel, so most times I dodge out of their way only to find (with the embers) that another has spawned right where I am and their damage is seemingly huge and damage radius is about 300 or so. So with the Fire Elemental there’s not too many places to run to, and dodging doesn’t work all the time, so it’s random whether you’ll actually survive at the end or not… but more often I’m seeing a map that looks like a graveyard after maybe one minute after boss spawn.

The Frozen Maw allows for more space to run away from the ice storms, and they might not be as prevalent as the embers but that doesn’t stop their random nature when they DO spawn. If you could kill either of these directly I reckon it would be a fairer fight, but as it is these are just plain annoying to face.

Certainly the extra challenge is welcomed, but when these can’t be killed directly and avoidance doesn’t always work (for me it’s maybe 30% of the time when it does), then I have to question why they’ve been designed the way they are currently.

PS: I couldn’t find any active threads about this, and it seems like this is the place to put it, but I went 5 pages back (threads that are 2+ months old) and no mention of it.

The tragedy that is megaserver

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Valandil Dragonhart.2371

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

The way it was pre-megaserver worked just fine. The nodes under T6 (ie. T5 and below) would respawn (hourly) in different areas of the map in a different instance. The T6 stuff is a once-every-24hr gather and so harvested instances of the nodes that you’ve gathered from would appear in a different map in different places.

Regarding map instancing and jumping, it can only be a good thing from my perspective. If you have a bugged event and you can’t get it to activate on one instance, then getting it to work on another (fresh) instance is the only real way to work it. With events like Foulbear and the Commisar consistently bugging, I can’t see how this instancing is bad; and now that they’re consistently farmed for their boss loot drops/chest (thanks to collections), it’s even more paramount.

As it is, the only way you can get another instance to spawn is if the map hits the hard-cap for players. Without any significant events like triple trouble or tequatl going on, this is kind of hard to get to happen.

Bring back those instanced maps!!

Features on The Commander tag

There was a full CDI on the WvW forums with LOTS of good suggestions from the players on how to improve the commander system overall … communication, organization, functionality, etc. The dev’s sole takeaway from all that time and effort was that it might be worth some time in the future investigating the possibility of maybe implementing more colors for the tags.

There you have it.

In other words, it was a pointless exercise.

Much needs to be done to fix Commander functionality.

Who's excited for 2014?

I feel I can’t get excited about what’s coming up for next year, esp. when the first LS update is a four-part Scarlet marathon. This alone kind of nullifies my hopes.

I know they have to write her out of the story, but I’d just prefer she get dropped like the bad idea she was, and left behind with a big “?” over her head.. that being said it just opens up debate as to where she’s gone and if we’ll see her again. So I guess we have to have closure on that aspect of the game.

Asides this, I’m waiting for Anet to make good on some very long-held promises that they still haven’t delivered on. The hottest topics in these forums from this year should be the key, I shouldn’t have to say anymore.

Bottom line is this game still needs a LOT of improvements, most of which are or have been mentioned in the CDI’s already.

Personality Removed ?

April 15th patch removed it (or hid it). Also you’ll note that “ferocity” was used in the personality system, which could be a reason why it’s hid… so as not to be confusing. Ferocity is the new armour/weapon term for Critical Damage.

The personality system could have gone SO much further than it did, but Anet didn’t run with it.

But you know we have said, officially, that SAB will return in the future, right? I don’t know that everyone understood that, but yes, it’ll be back. I honestly and truly don’t know when — and even more honestly, I don’t know if the return has been scheduled. However, I heard the “it will be back” from Colin, and I pretty much rely on that guy for knowing what’s what.

Gaile, I appreciate your efforts here, and I know most of the other forum users do as well. With regard to SAB however, even though you say it’ll be back, Colin says it’ll be back as well, and I am well aware of how true Colin’s word is (precursor crafting says hi!). I think what you have to remember is that there are many forum users here with considerably longer memories than what some devs give us credit for. Thankfully we don’t need a Search function on our memories.

I just think it’s unfortunate that a lot of players let negative experiences guide their hopes for this game, and the disappointment of a lot of things that have come to pass so far, regardless of the good intentions of the devs, a lot of it just hasn’t worked out the way we though (or hoped) it would, and in the timeliness that would have been appropriate.

As soon as I know it’s not going to be used, by any of my toons, I delete it. Then Anet comes in and throws a curve ball, saying that certain materials are going to be needed for this-and-that, and here I am wishing I’d kept a lot of stuff.

I believe Anet might have overshot the ability-factor of most zergs to DPS certain targets. Zergs are 90% brainless, we know this. It’s the 10% that are needed to figure out what happens during the fight and when. From this 10% the organisation factor has to come into play, and that won’t happen with standard zergs because they run around like headless chickens, and there’s always someone who won’t listen.

So essentially they’re putting us in the pro-zerg bracket and testing our abilities against a hardened target and a timer. Most servers (I say servers because thanks to the recent patch it’s hard to get as many people in on the fight as before and as such, overflows won’t be made) can barely outfit the 150 person cap for the event, and then getting 50 each to their respective fembots… it just won’t happen. In effect what Anet have done is made the next area with the holograms more elitist territory.

List of Common Controversial Forum Topics

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Valandil Dragonhart.2371

In my opinion, Precursor Crafting isn’t the same as the “Controversial Topics” in this list. I believe that 99% of player would support a way to obtain a precursor without the means of RNG or paying endlessly inflated price. However, the main ‘controversy’ is we are always in the dark about it. ANet only mentioned it once and never tells us how and when they plan to implement it. Everytime a thread is created, it only serves as a friendly (or passive-aggressive) reminder until everyone of us is tired of telling ourselves it is not gonna happen anytime soon. There is virtually no debate about that.

I think you kind of missed the point in the controversy, ie. debate, dispute, matter of contention or argument, with precursors is the acquisition.

Most of us are in the same boat that there should be a way of getting them via new content, ie. a scavenger hunt, building your own precursor, etc. but there’s always the snarky buggers who seem to think they have more weight to throw around by telling the hopefuls that if they work a bit harder for it and save up that they can buy their precursor from the TP. I call this the ‘chump-method’.

The biggest bone of contention about it all, in my mind at least, is Anet allowing full legendaries and precursors to be sold on the TP at all. This has been debated literally since day 1. People will continue to argue for and against the different methods of acquisition of precursors until all our fingers are bleeding from smashing keys in rage about it, and Anet will continue to sit on their hands on the whole issue, knowing full well it’s been shelved for a long long time.

It should have been sorted last year and made it into the feature patch before end of 2013, but no it didn’t make it; they came out and said to us that it wasn’t going to be in that patch because of the method of acquisition getting a rework with the rewards coming into line with presumably the format we have now.

One of the rare times that a dev has the balls to come in and discuss this highly-disputed part of the game and we get the seagull treatment. Typical.

Extremely complex loot issue gets finally resolved. Player is still not thankful but goes even deeper into the conspiracy nonsense. Entitlement much?

At least a.net fixes these things. Complex issues take time. Really … what a stupid thread this is.

I can’t believe you went there… you obviously don’t know what they’re capable of. Tell me, have you actually seen something fixed in this game, without breaking something else (sometimes completely unlrelated) in the process? This is Anet’s infamy. Most times they’ll overlook game mechanics that desperately need fixing as well, only to release sparkly lemon-fresh new content.

Also it’s far from conspiracy, but you obviously side with and take the word of Señor Johanson, blithely overlooking the facts. Trust me it’s not resolved yet.

See what happens when the update is implemented – then engage brain and put mouth into gear.

CDI- Character Progression-Horizontal

in CDI

My top 3:

1.) Answer for the reason of the reset of Fractals Progress. Still my main issue that beeing reseted without a comment or reason makes Progress in common just pointless to me and other Players. We can’t know if it will happen again just loose hard work for no commperision. I still hope to get an answer here to this issue.

2.) Rewards and aknoledgement that are not BUYABLE for doing certain Content ( orders, hard Content Special instabilities, hard achievment ( like light up))

3.) Less living Story and achievments that Need to be grinded every 2 weeks.. the updates are great but it burns out if you have all achievment so far and a sence of completition. it would be nice if there is an Option to redo ls Content achievments and stuff or leave them open ( unlike the fractal achievments for 1 month)

1) Moaning and groaning about having fractal levels >30 reset isn’t helpful in this CDI. We’re looking for suggestions that can aid guidance of how to progress horizontally.

3) LS content is made to be removed. Once you have completed it that should be all you need to do; it’s time to move on with other things like crafting, levelling alts, etc. However once they move away from Scarlet in the LS I’ll be most pleased.

Personally I don’t really have a top-3, but if anything I’d like to have my characters mean more to the story and the larger game as it progresses. Expanding upon the personality subset of each character as they were created by the player would be a great start, as some have mentioned already. Personality and attitude should be everything in this game, considering how far removed it is from the original GW.

Back then you couldn’t imagine an elementalist effectively wielding daggers or a mesmer with a greatsword, but in this game it’s possible. The ele not afraid to tatter his armour or get his hands dirty with daggers instead of ranging on a staff and just being the support guy, this is the classic example. That kind of character is to be feared and respected, not just acknowledged.

Make it a bit more interesting regarding their attitudes and how they approach things in the game, ie. some might not like to fight every living thing there is and make dragons cower, but others do. I believe their personalities should reflect this, and reactions to each hero from other entities in the game as well, such as NPC’s. I’m not sure how this would be possible to code or if it’s even viable, but it’s been suggested a few times over and with a bit of tweaking I’m pretty sure it could be modified to work.
