It’s only a 15 minute fight. So there’re no worries if you’ve got only an hour to play. If you fail, then move onto something else, if you succeed then yay!
This type of really basic graphics mistake bothers me a lot, and the degree it harms this event cannot be overstated. It’s not like a mismatch on some random rock or wall that once in a blue moon impedes someone’s movement, or obstructs a projectile. This graphic is fundamental to the event, one of the most important graphics and effects to get as accurate as possible. How this passed QA is beyond me. Even if you know to jump early, it’s still much harder to execute when there’s a mismatch of what you see and what you know, especially in an environment as busy as this event.
There have been a couple new builds since the new Tequatl event was released, and I’m amazed each time something this important and simple to fix hasn’t been addressed.
However, that’s not even the biggest problem with this event. The complete lack of any animation for Tequatl’s Reach is.
Most of what you say is similar to my own opinion, however one one major point I agree. ArenaNet is not continuing to brainwash people, rather it is attempting to please everyone. This game is still a great game even when not chasing a carrot, there are plenty of fun things to do in it for fun’s sake. However a large portion of today’s MMO players no longer know how to play for fun, so to attempt to please them achievements and rewards are offered.
Their attempts to close exploitable farming spots is proof they are attempting to make the game remain about having fun not just chasing the carrot, however the carrot chasers love the path of least resistance and therefore are upset when shortcuts are closed.
While I do agree and wouldn’t mind something with a more macabre of a feel to it (Orr might benefit from a Silent Hill type makeover), by the same token, I have to think that it could be the grittiest, darkest, most sinister atmosphere/landscape imaginable, and then someone goes trundling past with their plush Quaggan backpack, blasting out tunes on their SAB Boom-box and just like that, the immersion is dissolved.

Have you ever thought that Anet wants to bring a different challenge to MMOs? A lot like lineage 2 where world bosses are outside instances. Do remember this is new and people are swarming the area as well? Eventually it will be easy to do with a well organized team without newbs running around everywhere. But let me ask, have you tried to organize with the newbs? Maybe Anet wants to break out of the mold of “raids” and bring more life to it. Maybe, just maybe, Anet wants to push your comfort zone and have you communicate outside your group. It sounds hard and a lot work, but it makes it so much more rewarding.
I hope they rework all bosses.
This is one area in the game that I actually get mad at. It is a brilliantly designed zone and yet it can’t be enjoyed to it’s fullest as it is a desert, it is a zone clearly designed to be tackled by 40/50+ players and yet it is always deserted and all the invasions fail. I am on Gandara server which is not a low populated server. For about 30-45 minutes I was on the northern invasion and consistently failing the event to take down the flag ship and troop ships which led to me just farming the same 3 events over and over, I think the zone really needs a revamp. Answers I got in Lion’s Arch of why people don’t go there is because ‘it sucks’ ‘no orichalcum nodes’ and ‘low mf from low level goons’. Are these really the reasons why no one goes to this particular area? Do the masses of events not scale up to have champions thus making no one go?
Ive sort of come to the conclusion that, like Blizzard, Arenanet is conditioning us.
Warning: a bit of a wall.
TLDR; We are conditioned by Arenanet to play only for rewards, and not for the sake of playing. This is because they pump the game full of rewards, checklists, achievements, minis, and shinies. They use this word “reward” often in order to trigger this type of behavior.
Blizzard brainwashed a generation of MMO players into thinking a themepark MMO with endless gear grind, and a paid subscription is the way to go for the MMO industry. Many MMOs tried to follow their footsteps and failed. Miserably. So we come to, what we thought/think, is a unique game in GW2 and people wanted the same thing. They wanted verticle progression. Arenanet gave it to them. They wanted more. They wanted more rewards. Rewards, rewards rewards. We cannot have a patch without being enticed by rewards. You cannot read an article about GW2 these days without the use of the word ‘rewards’. Everything is centered around rewards. If you aren’t being rewarded, why bother? We can attribute a lot of this mentality to WoW, in a sense, because in WoW…we wanted verticle progression, gear grind, and rewards.
Arenanet takes rewards to a whole new level. And this is bad. They reward you for a lot of things. They reward you and shower you in currency. The more rewards you get, the more you want to play, right?
This whole idea that a game must be centered around “rewards” is creating a Pavlonian society where you guys (the playerbase) salivate whenever arenanet uses the word “reward”. If the article doesn’t have that word in it, suddenly it loses meaning. Have we all become the dog in Pavlov’s experiment?
A few months ago I created a thread about instrinsic vs extrinsic rewards. Playing for fun vs playing for reward. A lot of good points in both camps were made. People agreed with me that we no longer play for fun, but for reward. People also said that rewards ARE fun to them. Thats OK. But don’t you think those people are falling into the Pavlonian way of thinking?
For those of you that don’t know who Pavlov is:
Pavlov performed an experiment where a dog encounters food, they begin to salivate. He began to associate this with a bell sound. Eventually whenever he struck the bell, the dog began to salivate even if no food was present.
So..what is my point here? Arenanet has associated every patch and all content with some sort of reward system, and they use the term frequently. So frequently, that whenever they use the word ‘reward’, we as players begin to salivate and want more..and more..and more rewards. Its becoming a vicious cycle.
I believe most of you(myself included) have lost the purpose of a video game…to play for fun. I believe Arenanet definately has lost sight of this. Otherwise they would create content just to have fun. Not to check off achievements, and be rewarded. We would simply be enjoying their content, rather than rushing to complete achievements, or get the next ascended slot.
Its a vicious cycle started by Blizzard, and perpetuated by Arenanet. Blizzard conditioned us in WoW. Arenanet is doing it again with GW2.
Don’t believe me? Try going to another game after you have had your complete fill of GW2 and try not to expect the game to reward you for everything. I bet for a lot of us, it will be difficult.
If anyone responds to this, try to respond by not going to the opposite extreme in the case. Yes, rewards are part of game. I understand that. Yes, we all want some form of progression. I understand that. This isnt the age old verticle vs horizontal progression argument. This is just laying out how we are being conditioned by this company to expect rewards, because without a reward we do not have fun.
Games need rewards at some level, but not to the extent to which arenanet has gone to. They have removed a lot of the fun of the game and replaced it with something “virtually tangible”…if those words could ever go together.

You need to have a lvl 80 equipped char after 1 year …. soooo grindy.
Hello.
Forgive me for my bad english
I am pleased with new Tequila. Finally rly Challenging encounter. The boss should be the boss, and create relevant experience. It shouldn’t be a wall for auto-attack of AFK-rs.
1. She has already been killed, it means that’s all right with amount of her HP. People need to learn to optimize DPS and wring maximum out of character, instead of crying to the forum. It will take time until people unlearn to AFK full fight, run around in a panic and lay dead of 15 minutes waiting for the resurrection. But sooner or later the boss will be mastered. That is the essence of the MMO bosses.
2. Before complaining about something, find out the cause of this. AOE ring spawns only by her fingers. They are easy to kill if you do it quickly, and not just a peck AA in boss. Spawned circles removed by turrets (low CD). If AoE covered the entire field – means that people in the turret fooling around, and people on the battlefield are not respond to anything except the boss. Blame people. Mechanics is good.
3. Only 4 types of CC. One of it casts her fingers, again. Do not stand next to it, if people do not kill them. The second is a shock wave with her strike (on the good, she should kill you if you do not dodge this wave). Very short knockback from her spit, which can be dodged easily. And the fear. That’s all.
4. Shure. Why not. Without them we wouldn’t have to take care of the safety of turrets and megalazer’s batteries in 2nd phase. An important element of tactics.
I give this encouner a – 8.5/10

This topic shows a lot of why Tequatl is failing – the zerg mindset and the idea that Exotic/Ascended is what makes or breaks this fight.
Jormag is fun? Not for me. I hope he gets revamped to something like Tequatl.
So to my knowledge, Tequatl has been defeated a couple of times and once in overflow. Why is everyone calling for nerfs? I’m really just confused here. It seems that the servers that learn to coordinate and strategize are figuring out how to get it.
It’s funny how people are asking for hard content, and are given it, then complain that it’s too kitten
another note, when’s the last time you have seen so much excitement in the Guild Wars 2 community? Not since launch. I feel like this is a great step in the right direction for this game! Thanks for the challenge Anet!
(edited by Asthenea.1546)
This argument is basically another “easy mode” plea. To get four (4) shots at a random Ascended weapon, regardless of completing the event, is basically like asking Anet to provide free Legendaries for each character you own.
Here’s a tip for you: If you feel Tequatl isn’t worth your time, go kill the Shadow Behemoth. He has a new 15 minute timer too, but you can still kill him in under 3 minutes.
You don’t know what your talking about and have no idea what your saying. It is kind of rude to skim over posts without reading them.
What don’t I get? You stated you wanted a chance to get an Ascended drop for each quarter of life you take from Teq. But the part I missed was that you also wanted four (4) chances to get exclusive Tequatl weapon skins too. So basically, that’s eight (8) chances to get an Ascended type weapon for 15 minutes of work.
8…
What does guesting have to do with guaranteeing your spot? I’m on SF and I have yet to try teq in a non-overflow from day 1. You do know you have many more people on YOUR OWN SERVER then each zone can hold right?
Quote once where I said guaranteeing a place for me…please. If you would read, I’ve said most of the difference would do is lower queue times for people trying to get into their home server…not to mention, (randomly picking numbers) if there are 50 guests and 100 home server players left in overflow, that means 50 of those home server players would get a spot. That makes a difference. 50 players are happier and everyone has lower queue times.
“Home server” players have priority over guesting with regards to overflow ques (search function is not working, else I would provide the thread with a dev response to this). I wasn’t directing the “guarantee” part at you, as their are others posting in this thread. If I had been talking to you, I would have used @ or quoted something you said. Try not to take everything personally. For the next while, if you are placed in overflow and Teq is about to spawn, you will most likely not get it. The best thing you could do is to find someone in your home instance, join their party and hope you can join that way by spamming “Join their instance” (or whatever it’s called).
You mentioned that you were placed in Overflow after the recent Update. That sucks, but at the same time, your “Home Instance” is probably full of other BGters, not Guests…
Teq is the new thing in this game, everyone wants to participate, and since your server is one of the few that have completed it, your whole server (those interested anyway) is going to be trying to get in on the action. The BG server is Very High/Full server. You guys get qs for everything. If this is your first time experiencing it, I wouldn’t suggest trying to WvW during prime time.
TL,DR Please don’t cry on the forums cuz your server is full of people wanted to do the ‘new’ world boss.
Man, let’s be sincere here. You’re just mad because you haven’t been able to beat Tequatl.
Asking ANET to remove or limit a feature that has been there for so long would hit their reputation pretty hard. Now, it’s not only the guests on your server, even if there were no guests, you’d probably end in an overflow as well.
Deal with it. Patience is key.
Yeah, no kitten people are mad that they’re being deprived access from their own servers because of the guest swarm. Are you saying they shouldn’t be?
Yes!
If you arrive late to something, it’s obvious you won’t enjoy the same benefits that those who came early. And blaming it on the guesting feature won’t solve anything. You would be in the same position either way.
This feature is also permanent, so you have all the time in the world to do it.
Ohai, I think I just need to get all this frustration off my chest. Otherwise my head might explode, and that wouldn’t be pretty.
Generally, day to day, I play GW2 with my boyfriend – this is great. We’re both skilled players and can rely on each other in any combat situation. Woopdedoo for us! So. Tequatl’s update was released as the 17th, and I celebrated because no longer would I be a GTA V widow, wandering the expanse of GW2 alone – I would have all the time in the world to defeat Tequatl. Yay!
I love tough content. Liadri, SAB etc, these things that have people up in arms about difficulty, it really doesn’t bother me. The reason why is that previously these things have been Solo, the only person I needed to rely upon in these situations was myself.
Now I know there will be some saying ‘Well hold up a sec Aisina, this is an MMO you’re playing woman, if you wanna play solo, go find yourself a single player RPG!’ – Which is fair enough, however, multiplayer hard content in this game (such as it is) allows you to choose your team mates. Nobodys just going to wander into my dungeon or fractal and start aggroing mobs left right and centre while the rest of us stand there going ‘what the?!’ – Neither am I going to 4 man this content because player 5 wants to leech the reward easy. “You go ahead guys, Im just going to sit here and let you do the hard work.”
Do you see where I am going with this? Maybe.
My point is. No matter how much I gear my character towards defeating Tequatl, no matter how many Powerful Potions of Undead Slaying I purchase, or spicy mushrooms I force down myself. Its not going to make one jot of difference.
Even if I bring lets say… 15 of my closests friends and guild mates and we magically all make it into the same instance, we all bring our potions and mushrooms and BiS gear. We all sit on the same voice server, and coordinate. We still don’t make a difference – because Sir Herpalot is busy firing his hylek turret at Risen 20 feet behind him.
Even if you coordinate players on the turrets to be on the same voice communication, you can guarantee that Sir Herpalot and friends (he has many) still manage to steal them mid fight.
Ok wall of text, you can see why I needed to get this off my chest.
Just… argh. Do I have any magic suggestions other than putting Captain Teqqy in an instance where me and Sir Herpalot + company never shall meet? No.
Stress. So much stress.

First off, beautiful thread, OP. I really like the way you express yourself. Though, I totally don’t share your view. I can understand it, to be fair.
I think the problem is that people were conditioned the wrong way. Over months.
No, you’re not entitled to a reward just because you show up.
No, if you don’t think while fighting you’re not eligible for success.
etc
Once the nay-saying has subsided (a bit) and people start thinking straight again and start to formulate strategies other than just complain (and it MUST be possible, since all servers are on the same page), it’ll get better.
I personally think this game (among many other MMOs) is way too easy.
It totally undermines any tactical thinking (especially in non-instanced PvE).
For me Anet is on the right track.
After Blackgate beat teq, a lot of people have been saying that the event is too hard because it requires too much coordination and is only possible with 120 people on VoIP. After watching the video, I don’t feel like this is the case. For the most part, the main thing blackgate did was positioning, and positioning isn’t something that requires VoIP.
In the runs I participated in, 50% of the people where at the turrets, which amounted to a lot of wasted DPS. Even the people damaging teq himself were really spread out, making it hard to cleanse the poison around them, and to buff them. Blackgate on the other hand had most of the people at teq, and they where clumped up in one big ball. That way it was easy to buff them, and the amount of poison pools the turrets had to cleanse was much lower.
This is something that i think a zerg will be able to learn with time, like how most people learned to go to the safe spots in the Claw of Jormag fight. Once people learn where they should stand, more people will start succeeding more.
Once enough people group together, even people who didn’t know they had to group up will join the group because of the zerg mentality.
Also because you can chain mega lasers, i think the fight is easier than it seems. Its much harder to get from 100% to 75% than from 75% to 50%.
TL;DR: I don’t think the fight is really as hard as it seems and doesn’t really require an ungodly amount of coordination.
I guess it’s a good thing that people that give up easily don’t show up anymore? Maybe it will leave the people that actually want to make an effort to get organised on a map together and not spread up over several overflows
He Isn’t made to be a farmable boss anymore
I just want to get my two cents out there for the sake of those who think this update is a means to stop anyone from getting the new gear, less experienced players from enjoying the content, so on and so forth.
This event is made for the whole server to work united against a huge threat. And it has definitely made it feel as such. For what everyone has had to deal with as far as the hardest content, has been between Mad Kings Clocktower and Liadri. But never on a scale this large that required everyone making a team effort.
Is it tough? You bet, Impossible? No, a server has already proven that it can be beaten, and i tip my hat to them for their coordination and teamwork.
While i’m slightly worried that people will stop showing up to the event because of the fact it is so difficult (Looking back at Southshore and the Kraka.) I have no doubt people will want to for the chance for the Ascended weapons and such.
Congrats to the server(s?) that have beaten Tequatl, and here is hoping more servers will follow in victory!
I find the calls for nerfs from the community very disheartening. A huge amount of content seemed quite difficult when we first played it whether it was the Aetherblade Retreat, SAB or the Queen’s Gauntlet encounters. However, in every single case players persevered and eventually succeeded and I am hoping it will be the same for this encounter too. Anet, please do not dumb down the content for the love of Dwayna!
I did the event just a bit ago on Sanctum of Rall in a vent call with 50 other players and two Anet devs. We didn’t defeat him but we got him pretty far down, and it was honestly one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in this game. It really brings the community together, every one was friendly and organized, and aided me in bringing the right skills and traits to benefit everybody. Getting to chat with devs and play with them was also fantastic.
Please don’t change the event. It’s really bringing people together and teaches excellent teamwork skills in pve, which we sorely need.
Alternatively, if what we are striving for is realism, after 15 mins there could be a hard enrage mechanism:
1 – Tequatl does some über-attack that kills all players currently in Sparkfly Fen.
2 – This zone-wide wipe triggers a worldwide debuff on all players: “Tequatl succeeded in taking over Sparkfly Fen and destroyed all life within. Morale on Tyria is low.” (everybody in every zone gets -5% debuff to dmg)
Now that might be motivation enough to defeat him when he rises. :-)
Zelyahine – 80 Ranger
Victory is Life Eternal [VILE] – Desolation
The thing is to the average open world zerg this is impossible.
Why should everything in the game be doable by the “average open world zerg”?
