Please, do take your time to include the “A”. It is a courtesy to mention the full name
That said I’m more an Isaac Asimov kinda guy.

I agree with the sentiment (of doing the right thing just because and not expecting gratitude) – yet I don’t think it’s wrong to mention that showing your gratitude is the right thing to do as well. As in a friendly reminder, not a form of rebuke.

So, as to keep the wheels turning, cheers.

hehehe!
To Robert A Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and all the greats, good manners and general goodwill, Cheers

LOL, cheers indeed to both of those and Douglas Adams as well! Can’t have science fiction mentioned without Hitchhiker’s being involved!

I’ve got 3 lv 80s and over two dozen alts ranged from mid-teens to mid-forties. And while I tend to be one of the abhorred and derided soloists, who would LOVE henchmen for dungeons because I won’t set foot in one otherwise, and who ghosts around the edges of most things, one particular thing I will say I ALWAYS jump in on is when someone pings a map chat request for help. “Anyone able to help with _ skill point, anyone able to help with __ DE” … no worries … I’ve got all the WPs most of the time and it’s not much more than a matter of seconds before I’m there, lunging past the person asking for help, doing what needs to be done, even if it means going down, so they can get that SP, POI, Vista, etc. It’s no biggie — glad to help. I’ve done ’em all, so I know some of them are a pain in the kitten.

That said … if you’re asking someone for a hand because you’ve run into something that just totally brickwalls you, and someone takes time out of whatever they’re doing to run over or spend the coin to WP to jump in, I think the least you can do is offer up a simple thanks for the gesture. I love the game, and have been a supporter of it since the first beta, RNG and lacking living story updates aside, and I don’t tend to kitten much on the forums, but tonight was the fourth instance where someone pinged the map chat for a hand, I went over and pitched in, and the person disappeared afterwards with so much as an abbreviated TY.

You took the time to ask in map chat for help … usually in a lengthy description of what you needed a hand with — “Can anyone help me with ____ skill point”, “Vets hanging by this _ and they’re just killing me over and over — can anyone jump in and distract them?”

Cool, no problem. There as quick as I can. But nothing sours that more than doing it and having you skip away the moment YOU get done what you needed, and the other person that took time out of whatever they were doing be kitten ed.

TY?

Took less than a second to type. C’mon, I know you can do it. My KIDS can do it on their phones with two jerks of their thumbs. I love to help, but when I do it and then the person I’ve helped just skips away like my assistance amounted to a handful of kitten in their eyes … really? A map chat TY? … Especially given I tend to play from midnight until 4 AM CST, so I can’t imagine these are KIDS I’m responding to for the most part?

We’re better than that. Happy to help. Always will be. But there’s a difference between a friend and a chump.

TY.

Makes all the difference.

To my knowledge, which can be summarized as reading 80% of the posts on here, there is pretty much nothing that can satisfy this community. Literally something always has to cause conflict and several rage posts. To add to that, most of the forum posts that do offer criticism, don’t offer it constructively. There is a lot of “This is the last straw Anet”, or “Does Anet even care about their players?” on this forum. We get patches every month! And in the last 2 months, its been twice a month, which is absolutely insane for a game. Obviously its a continual learning process, but I don’t think most of you actually take the time to appreciate the immense work Anet puts into the game, part of which is going on the forums listening to you guys make lousy complaints.

There is plenty of proof, but I’m not searching it down for you. Go google it, it will give us a break from your presence for at least a small reprieve so we can have grown up talk

Well you used the word “milk” as in they’re using the product just to release a different product. However Aion/ Lineage and all their other games had to fund Guild Wars 2 to begin with. Having in mind that Lineage is still more profitable than Guild Wars 2 it’s probably funding Wildstar far more than Guild Wars 2 does. So if you’re going to say that they’re abusing the product just for other products you have to present proof that it’s not those other products that the money is coming from.

1. We’re getting events EVERY month. It’s not just dragon bakitten’s also the other 2 living story parts, sab and holiday events.
2. Full trait overhaul coming for every class on June 25th. I’m absolutely sure that that takes a lot of man power.
3. Someone is forgetting WvW/Spvp updates, guild missions, fractals, new jumping puzzles, new cinematics for the story and other things that we constantly get.

My complete list of reasons why I keep playing GWII would be a giant wall of text, so I’ll just list a few:

1. No subscription.
2. I still have a ton of content yet to experience. (I’ve only tried two story mode dungeons, haven’t touched crafting, only found a few jumping puzzles, I only have 1 level 80 so I still have a ton of personal story from other branches/races/orders yet to experience, have never done a fractal, I haven’t seen all event bosses… I could go on.
3. I feel at home in GWII. It is the perfect game for me.
4. ArenaNet keeps adding more content to the game and I love the holiday events.
5. Because of the dynamic events I can level up multiple characters and in every zone I go to I can have a new experience because of events I haven’t seen before.

The living story stuff – I just like it, I guess I’m broken

General character progression – alt-o-holic, only managed to get 1 to 80, with a handful of others all over the board

The occasional bait the troll session – when you need a fight, there’s nothing like picking one in LA

The ‘I feel like frustrating myself terribly’ moments – some would probably say ‘when I feel like a challenge’ – this is where I attempt jumping puzzles. Frustrating for me, hilarious for anyone watching.

I could keep going, but I’ll end it there….

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I basically level characters. I don’t expect too much either, for the same reasons as you. My mother always said ‘only stupid people get bored, they don’t know how to entertain themselves’. The game has a lot of ways to have fun. I’ve noticed that a lot of players today race as fast as they can to max level then spend the next six months complaining on the forums about the lack of things to do. I call these players ‘premature ejaculators’ (probably got filtered) They don’t understand foreplay.

I tried doing the high end dungeons and raiding in WoW. In fact I super charged through my leveling to get a specific race/class combo into position to get the armor so that I could because ‘raiding is where the actions at.’ I’m sorry, brainlessly running a dungeon until I’m so mind-numbingly bored that I could do it in my sleep while drugged was not my idea of fun. Doing it a few thousand times to get a SINGLE piece of gear, just so I could move to the next one to repeat the process to get another SINGLE piece of gear…just to have it go obsolete and have to repeat the process for the next tier. Oh dear gods, I couldn’t do it. I can’t do it. That is not ‘playing’ a game. That is ‘working’ for no pay.

Just my opinion though. I’m seriously glad that I don’t have to do this stuff in GW2.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

When buying toys is disappointing

in Dragon Bash

When was young, there used to be this store called Consumer Distributing. Twice a year they would release a catalogue which would always have an amazing toy section.

Seeing all the cool new toys of the season made every kid beam with excitement. We would all convince our parents to drive us there, so we could spend the allowance we had been patiently saving.

Consumers Distributing was not like a regular store though. How it worked, was that you would look though the catalogue, find the number of the item you wanted, fill in some info, and then hand it to the clerk at the front desk.

They would take your card, go into the back, and manually check to see if the item was in stock.

The problem was, almost always the toy you had been dreaming of so much, was not in stock. In fact, for most kids I knew it was the same story. Despite us trying for years, most of us would walk away empty handed.

Yet, despite all our frustration, disappointment, and vows to never bother with them again, some kid would inevitably show up for “show and tell” with one of the cool new toys we all wanted, which would fuel our desires, and we would all beg our parents to drive us down, and try again, and again.

For years this business operated this way, and for years kids walked away disappointed. Our allowance, once reserved for that toy, inevitably found its way into other things like Slurpees, arcades, candy, Nintendo games, and other stuff we thought we needed.

One day however, it all changed. A Toys R Us moved in and for the first time we could walk in, and see what was available. We would get in our bikes early Saturday morning and meet all the other kids waiting at the doors to see what new stock came in the night before.

If we didn’t find the toy we wanted, we would either buy something else, or save our money for next week. Not surprisingly however, Consumers Distributing didnt last long after that. Oh sure, it stuck around for a little while, but from that point on, I don’t think anyone ever used that business again when it came to toy shopping.

The strange thing was, that despite how many kids they excited with the new catalogue, and that every now and then something would be in stock, we all hated that place. The feeling of disappointment every one of us felt had such a strong impact on us all that even today the memories of that place make me angry.

For me, the events in GW2 often feel the same. Any excitement I have when the previews come out, quickly turns to disappointment once I realize that my chances of the item I want being in stock, is slim to none. I have my allowance stuffed under my mattress, just begging to be spent, but unfortunately there is nothing to buy but more disappointment.

I suppose the only difference between Consumers Distributing and Guild Wars 2, is that one was selling products, and the other is selling entertainment. It makes me wonder how many times I need to walk away empty handed, and disappointed before realizing its no more fun today, than it was all those years ago.

How to fix RNG and increase ArenaNet income.

I personally feel as though the gem system is just fine as it is. As others have stated, every gem you can buy with gold was bought & paid for after all. Vol’s token idea strikes me as being something that could work for many of us; a RNG element for those that want to gamble, and a choice for those of us who want a direct purchase. As for keeping them rare, is it really worth doing it like we have now just to let a few “special snowflakes” be happy, all the while upsetting the rest of the playerbase? In the case of the current batch of skins, most people I’ve talked to want them because they’re pretty.

To add to the discussion, I think selling cheap RNG boxes (like we have now) alongside direct purchases for the same items could work out to be more profitable as well. Set the prices like they were for the Rox & Braham skins as to not drive people off, and keep the RNG box prices low to encourage people to buy more. This way, if people that gamble don’t get a skin, they’ll still have the option of buying it outright. (Profiting off both the boxes and direct sale) All the while, ANet can make more money (and build their reptutation) in the long run by not kittening off both sides.

Vol.5241

The best way to fix this is to operate on a system that rewards failures so that if you are unlucky enough to fail on rolls, you get rewarded in the end.

Here is how the system works. Typically, you get a ticket from the chest that you can exchange for a skin. Let’s say 1 Fused ticket can be exchanged for 1 skin.

Well let’s say that you open a chest and you don’t get a ticket. Instead, you are given a token. You continue to open several more chests, and all of them failed, but you still get tokens. For each fail, you get 1 token.

Now Arenanet can set a predetermined number of tokens that you can exchange for a ticket.

We can set that at 30 – meaning, if you fail at RNG enough that you have failed 30 times, you should have 30 tokens and you shall be able to exchange those 30 tokens for 1 ticket.

The great thing about this is that this can even entice players to spend even more on the shop. For example, let’s say that I open 15 chests. 14 of those failed, so I have 14 tokens, but the 15th one gave me a ticket to exchange. Hurray!

But now I have 14 tokens left, so it’d be a waste to just have them lying around. I should try and open 16 more tokens so that I could buy another skin that I wouldn’t have went for otherwise!

Blue or red gems wouldn’t really make a difference for Anet. They really don’t care whether you buy gems with gold or with real money, if you buy gems with real money, they get their money from the gems, if you buy the gems with gold, well, someone must have bought the gems in the first place to sell them for gold, so they got their money as well, from their point of view both is the same, so don’t really see what they would win by complicating the system like that.

I won’t spend money on RNG either (or even gold bought gems), but it’s not ArenaNet that needs to open their eyes, it’s us (as in, the game population as a whole). They have offered weapon skins for sale before (christmas, flame and frost) and for much lower prices, the fact that they’ve done RNG boxes for the last three events makes me think that they’re selling MUCH more than the skins did. If people really put their wallet where their mouth is (at least where it seems to be according to forums, that isn’t a majority nor representative of the community as a whole), and stopped buying the RNG boxes, and bought the skins offered for direct sale, I bet we’d see more direct sales and less RNG boxes in the future.

And yes, I’m sure you’d spend $200 on all the skins, but I doubt most people would (I wouldn’t, but for other reasons that aren’t relevant)… and makes more business sense to have, instead of a product where 3 people will spend $200, one where you have 10 people spend $50 each (the equivalent cost of 50 rich coffers in this case).

I got the idea for this thread from several observations. The main one being my own behavior in this forum. While I am generally a very kind person, this forum as with many I have been a part of, can bring out my smart kitten side pretty quick. When I stepped back and evaluated that, I came to the conclusion that I was being overly judgmental of others that play the game.

Yes there are a lot of posts I don’t agree with or that I think are just plain ridiculous. However, in real life if I hear someone say something in public that I think is stupid I don’t get into some debate over why I think what they said was wrong. I just go about my business and often think to myself that I hope they have a better day. I don’t care for constant complaining but it really gets too much when I find myself complaining about complaints.

So reflecting on all these posts I have been involved in and, admittedly rude at times, I started thinking about the person on the other side of the screen that I can’t see. I thought about how I felt as I purchased and downloaded the game. How excited I was once the install was complete and when I first made my first character. So then I thought about this other mysterious person living in wherever and I imagined they felt the same as I at one point. I started thinking that this is a real person that wakes up everyday just like me and they want to have a good day which in many cases means enjoying the game.

The thing about the Internet, and I found this out early during the USNET years, is that since you can’t see that person you forget that they have feelings as well. It’s easy to forget that maybe they just had a bad day and an unpleasant gaming experience later in the day was kind of the final straw leading to rage posting on the boards. It’s easy to forget that when they click the login button they want to have fun also. It’s the reason for playing a game and people like to have fun.

So where am I going with this? I thought it would be a good idea to brain storm some random acts of (kindness) in game to maybe make that random person smile for a second, maybe make their day a little better.

Here are a few things I have done:

*When I see a player that is obviously new and low level running around lost, I help them for a minute. Then later on I mail them a few coins and or maybe a piece of armor they could use. I simply write “Welcome to GW2” and attach the coin/item. I imagine as a new player something like that might give them a brief smile.

*If I see a downed player in PvE I rez them and if they are not down leveled I mail them some coin with a note that says, “Thought you could use some coin to help with your repairs.”

*I shadow obvious new players and only jump in if they get in a real dicy situation then disappear and do it again for a bit.

*I’m maxed on cooking skill so when I get low level cooking mats that don’t sell for much I’ll just mail them to some random name I see in my area with a note that says,“I bet you are hungry after all your travels.”

*I haven’t done this yet but I think once a day when I see some negative posts here I’ll just send one of those people that are unhappy some small gift. Something that has been in my bank and I will never use or sell. (Disclaimer: Please don’t start posting negative threads just to have a chance at a prize. )

Anyway, these are the main things I do but I’m looking for more and hope others will share ideas and participate. The thought isn’t to give your bank away but just some small token of (kindness) that might just make someone think, “That was nice.” even if just for a minute.

tl;dr
I’ve been rather rude here at times and I apologize. I’m really a pretty decent person in real life. I think most here on both sides of arguments are as well. The idea is fun and to some degree I am guessing when everyone logs in each day the idea is to add something pleasant to their day. So let’s help random people out with that.

Please share other ways myself and others might just send our own little “token” to random players as a way of saying in game, “Hope you are having a good day.”

P.S. (kindness) due to overly aggressive language filter.

It seems to me that with the Wintersday boxes, if someone opened the box and killed the foes inside, if you were within the mini-map radius, the box still was available for you.
Or maybe the loot from the vanquished foes was available. I don’t exactly remember which, but I know I didn’t have to race to the spawn and try to get a hit in to get loot.

One of the core-philosophies of this game is the cooperative aspect. You should be happy to see other players.

GW2 has done a great deal to go in the right direction, but there are still problems. Dragon Bash introduced an activity where it get’s very visual: You compete against other players to do enough damage on a mob in order to get it’s loot. While this is imho a big problem in this holiday-event it can also be a problem in the core of the game.

Lv.80 players who visist low level zones are very powerful. Despite backscaling they can do enormous damage to mobs and if there are 2 or more such players it’s difficult to get the participation next to them.

Now we have mining-nodes where every player can get his fair share. Why not take this concept and evolve it to battles? A solution would be to make corpses lootable by everyone around. If you come by too late you can still get your share. You won’t get the xp for killing the mob but you still get loot.

Wait a minute. Did I just say: I get loot when haven’t even participated in the battle? Yes I did. But… how is it rewarding to kill a mob then? Well, you get your loot anyway. Isn’t this BS, he just watched and did nothing… and still gets loot? Yeah, he’s in our team against the dragons, do you remember?

What do you think? Could you live with such a system? Do you think others just don’t earn their loot if they haven’t enough AOE-power with them?

That’s what I’d like to see.

I have to agree with OP, too. GW2 was tons of fun until November 2012. I hit 80 one ore two weeks before and got my exotic gear. I enjoyed Halloween a lot and then Anet introduced ascended gear. After that the game went downhill for me with every patch: DR, RNG, the so called “living” story … I think that attracted a lot of other players, but the fanbase that believed in the manifesto was kind of betrayed.

Except for some WvW I quit GW2 around February or March and played TSW since then. Yes, I wanted GW2 to be great but after November 2012 it just wasn’t the game I played since then.

As one of the long time Guild Wars fans who believed in, and continue to believe in, the manifesto I fail to see how we were “betrayed.” Everything said in the manifesto is still true, and if anyone was betrayed it was Arena Net, as the community are the ones to wouldn’t stop telling them how awful their game was, and how all the things they were trying to do were bad ideas. Vocal minority of not; that kind of thing is what is really responsible for the current state of the game.
