Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

Yes.

There are plenty of ways to reward players other than better gear.

Exotics were fine, in a middle ground between not too easy (so that you’d still feel some sense of accomplishment when getting your full set) and not too hard (so that even the most casual players had a chance to get them).

GW2 should focus on all these other ways (i.e. horizontal progression). Some are already in-game (skins, title, achievement, etc), and a lot more have been suggested during the last few days. I’ve actually seen such good ideas that, if ArenaNet decides to rollback the recent changes and implement these ideas, it might be the best thing to happen to the game (for instance, on top of my head, unique dyes with special effect/gradient).

From the last page https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/lostshores/Do-the-right-thing-and-ban-people-who-exploit/page/3#post813875

Hi all.

Due to the amount of time the event took to run on a character, swapping to another character to run the instance again on a different overflow server is not considered an exploit by the development team. While there was an extremely small chance for individuals to jump to an overflow that required little effort to complete, the majority of players participating in the final event put in a lot of time and work so as such, they were entitled to receive the same reward for completing the event again. This was designed as such to allow those players who couldn’t hop on exactly at 12 noon PST an opportunity to participate in Sunday’s event.

Thanks for your feedback, which we’ll be sure to consider for future events, but for this event, this thread and topic are closed.

Sorry but i find this a terrible blanket excuse for whats happened.

First let me state that i do not care about people running the event with multiple characters. I am concerned with the statement that says the overflow events were designed so people could run it if they missed the main event time.

If this was so, why did you patch when you did, stopping all in progress events instead of letting them finish. Some people were in the middle of killing the final boss. Others, like me had JUST gotten home from school and were excited that the events were still running.

I am finding it a common trend with Americans that they do not consider what is going on in any country but there own before they do something. For Australia you ran a one time event from 3am monday morning to about 5:30pm monday night, during an exam period, during peoples works hours, turning the event off JUST as everyone is getting home.

You did not give the oceanic community a chance to even participate. Then to turn around and pretend that you were giving people a chance to participate, when you stated that it was a one time event only, and many many people saw the time had passed, assumed they had missed it and not gotten on, completely missed out.

If this was intended to give people a chance..please answer the following questions

  • Why did you not let people know there was an additional chance
  • Why did you simply not let the rest of the events finish in overflows
  • Are you going to continue to run events at such times that exclude to oceanic community

If nothing else, please answer the last question as it will probably determine if i want to continue playing or not.

I found the Lost Shores event to be far too frustrating; by the time the sunday event rolled around I didn’t even bother logging in.

IMO, the event wasn’t properly tested, and took place over too short of a timeframe to allow developers to fix those bugs that were discovered on day one.

I get the whole “wanting players to be surprised” thing, or the whole “wanting to have mystery” thing, but the truth of the matter is neither of those can exist in an mmo, because without properly testing things there’s a high chance they’re going to end up broken. More importantly you can’t test them with only a handful of testers, you need to replicate a full server of players all trying to do the same thing at the same time, as it will be when it goes live.

The Lost Shores, imo, was a catastrophe, not a success. You really ought to pin a picture of the banner to the dev idea room with the caption “avoid this”.

For a game that’s sold worldwide to have an event that only a few time zones could reasonably join in the finale is plain wrong.
To prevent anyone farming these events you make it either a one off per account or per character if your feeling generous.
ie in the final event message you would get a key to the final chest.
Players could then farm the event but only open the chest once so no silly numbers of exotics.
You could then spread the load of the final event over a 24 hour period allowing all time zones a fair chance of getting in at a suitable time.
Pacific it was 12 noon UK was 8pm so far so good.
India a 1 am start then as you go east through China Japan to say Australia your starting around 4 5 or 6 am.
So what an Aussie to do wake at 6 play the event then head off for work.
Sry its not on and your only going to hurt sales in these areas.
I am convinced your Programmers are doing a top notch job with this game but someone has a few strange ideas.
Like introducing friends to the game on the same weekend as a major event.
So all the instability and bugged quests probably just turned them right off the game.

Or just do daily and monthly achievements for karma jugs, use them with karma boosters and you get enough karma to get at least 2 temple exotics a month. Hardest part will be to get to uncontested temples.

South East Asia player here. I paid for the game, I’ve bought my share of gems, I was in bed when it happened because of Real Life Work.

Not buying any more gems or NCSoft products until:
1) they change their approach to designing events so as to acknowledge their own design manifesto’s statements about treating players’ time with respect, and
2) they stop treating everyone on the other side of the Pacific like they bought a second-class ticket.

Step 1) Make Karka Acce. & Karka Bag & Karka Chest undestroyable.
Step 2) Make NPC in Lions Arch which will warp you to an personal instance map.
Step 3) Check if Account has Karka Acce. or Karka Bag or Karka Chest and at least 1 Level 80 Character.
Step 4) If Yes (Has Bag or Acce. or Chest or doesn’t have an Level 80 Char.) -> Deny Access, else send to Instance.
Step 5) Spawn Event Chest in that Instance so you can loot it.
Step 6) ???
Step 7) Profit

There may or may not could appear more steps during this process, like still everyone is mad, or everyone finds a way to abuse this, or the unlikely one, everyone will be happy.

What about those of us who were upscaled to L80 and would have been able to receive a reward?

You are literally asking for them to throw out one of their initial design promises purely because you’ve decided that the time doesn’t suit your personal tastes. And that’s fine, just stop pretending that you’re not doing that. Because you are.

Sorry, but was “one of their initial design promises” supposed to be excluding players from Oceania and Asia? The time that people in this part of the world have to live by is not a matter of “personal taste”, neither is it being born in this region.

We cannot change where we reside, but game developers can change what time they schedule events, and for how long they should run.

Stop pretending that it’s fine to ignore whole continents that you don’t belong to, because that is what you are saying.

If all one-time events are going to be run at 12pm PST, that just means we are not going to get to experience the same content. Where is it in their Manifesto that states that a player must be from a certain timezone to fully enjoy the game?

Are Australians and Asians really less worthy heroes? (and kiwis too!)

I read that official post and all I could think of was the old saying “the checks in the mail.”

With the number of server side issues during the event, and the fact that some people ended up doing the event on multiple servers because of disconnects and relogs, I doubt there is any way for them to truly gauge who participated and to what extent. Even if it was possible, do they have someone skilled enough to pull all that data out? I have serious doubts after the ridiculous number of programming errors during this short time event.

I’ll just write that promise on an ice cube and leave it at that.

Frankly, it’s too bad. NCSoft has had some games show real promise, but they, like most gaming companies, don’t want to invest a lot in games due to a fickle gaming community which is fickle largely due to companies not really investing in their games. The big catch-22.

Even it out: Reward those who played.

Three hours isn’t six, Killacam. And does Anet providing reparations to everyone who suffered DCs at the hands of their server cheapen your experience?

There seems to be a huge rift on this forum between those lucky enough to finish the event (Generally in the “get over it” category) and those who found themselves victim of the server hardware. I can see both sides of the issue, and there are merits to both.

The point that bears repeating is that a large contingent of players failed to complete the event through no fault of their own, and their investment of time warrants recompense. A “Sorry you DCed, better luck next time” just doesn’t cut it.

Lost Shores: Creating Winners vs. Losers

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: zzled.9125

zzled.9125

Some of GW2’s best features came from rethinking MMO conventions to promote inclusiveness and cooperative play. For example, automatically sharing credit for monster kills, individual loot drops and individual gathering nodes. These allow everyone to “win”, rather than create some winners and some losers.

This way of thinking was absent from the Ancient Karka event chain. First, it was implemented as a “one-time” event that lasted several hours. I mentioned this already in an earlier thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lostshores/No-One-Time-Events-We-re-Paying-Customers/first

Second, completing the event rewarded some players with legendary precursors, creating some huge winners. The level of rewards here were completely disproportionate to anything else in the game so far. Whether you finish a World Event chain or run a dungeon, you’d be extremely lucky to get even a single exotic.

Together, these two factors created a lot of losers. If you live in the wrong time zone, you lose. If you were busy that day, you lose. If you quit halfway due to lag and/or frustration, you lose. If you got disconnected and couldn’t get back to a shard with an active event chain, you lose. If you “only” got L78 exotic drops from the the Ancient Karka chest, you lose. That’s a lot of losers. And people don’t want to play GW2 to feel like losers. Everyone wants to feel like a winner.

Rolling back the servers isn’t an option, so what can be done so that more people “win”?

(1) Design future World Events to allow everyone to participate. Some ideas that have come up on the forums include running the events multiple times over a day or week, or implementing some kind of instancing or phasing. At the absolute minimum, one time events should not give out the most valuable items on the TP.

(2) Find other ways to give everyone a much better shot at legendary precursors and make other activities more rewarding. For example, buff the drops from other event chains, such as the Orrian temples, to match the Ancient Karka event. Buff the dungeon rewards further to give at least one rare or exotic per run, or perhaps a bag of Tier 6 crafting materials.

This is just my 2 cents. You can cater to the people who feel like winners only if others lose, or the people who don’t care if other people lose as long as they have a good time. But I’d much rather play a GW2 in which everyone can win.

While some of the ranger base mechanics should be looked at, I personally think they should focus on fixing the bugs of our class first.

Opening Strikes not working at max range.
Arrow speed/AI and “obstructed” in an open field.
Pets not being able to go up small ledges
Pets bug that stops them from attacking certain targets
etc.

With those bug fixes in place, we can actually see how good the class is and they can balance accordingly. Until then I know my damage is being held back by things outside of my control and design, and that bothers me.

I think we can all guess what the next patch will be

Warriors:

  • Rifle damage increase 15%
  • Rifle attack distance increased to 1800

Rangers:

  • fixed a bug in longbow that didn’t allow the AI of arrows to track properly. Ranger longbow distance has now been decreased to 600
  • Fixed the AI with pets. There are no more pets. Ranger damage has been decreased 50% to compensate.

The folks who managed to play the event wouldn’t have “suffered” if the event was repeated multiple times over a span of days. If they say otherwise, then they are arguing for the sake of arguing… it in no way changes their play experience (other than making it better by spreading the player load out and reducing lag/culling).

ANet would have far fewer complaints for this event if the loot was not “best in game”. Think about it — no other activity in the game (NONE) gave the same quality of loot as this one-time event. Not dungeon chests, not map completion rewards, not personal story rewards. The reward here was two exotics, two rares, and a chest that contained another exotic and a 20-slot bag.

I read players stating that the loot is not “must have”… and they are right. But the fact is it was the best loot offered in the game to date. That’s a great way to make dedicated players (and big fans) mad — schedule something they can’t attend and then give best-in-class rewards for it.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

As an Aussie this is just disgusting Anet. I did not have chance at all to attend the event (like 1 – 4am local time).

I had work in the morning.

I have many Aussie friends who all missed out due to the timezone difference. There are whole guilds in my server who have Aussie only members who completely missed out on this event. One time events really have no place in an MMO. Who at ANet thought this was a good idea needs to have their head stapled to a karkas kitten

Why would you give a person a reward for something they didn’t do? Weren’t able to attend? Well then you weren’t able to attend, move on with your life. Complaining will not help, all you complainers saw this on the halloween event.

This is the argument that bothers me most. A lot of the people who received the reward chest were NOT around to participate on Friday/Saturday while people who DID participate these days but not on Sunday received NOTHING. The scavenger hunt was definitely enough work to deserve equal reward.

People aren’t asking for a reward for doing NOTHING. They’re asking for a reward for participating during the other parts of the weekend. Perfectly reasonable.

How the loot should have worked:

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: Diviner.7405

Diviner.7405

The final loot for the Ancient Karka should have been this:

1)20 Slot box
2)The Exotic Accessory
3)2 Exotic Karka Weapons based on your profession (the exact weapon is random, but you can only get weapons that you can wield)

Have these weapons has special Karka skins for all them. Not very many people would have complained about this, and everyone would have been rewarded equally.
Easy solution that took 1min to come up with.

Really not impressed with Arena-net for the second time in a week. First they add a new tier of gear and then they give out 20g-300g worth of stuff away on a one time event that not everyone had a chance to attend. The reward should have been a soulbound armour or weapon skin to show you were there, rather than a reward worth up to hundreds of hours of farming.

The rest of the content was fun, I love the fractals and the new zone is neat… but I feel pretty alienated by receiving a jug of karma for the content I was around for vs the 3 exotics and 20 slot bag I was not around for.

My opinions on the whole patch:
The good:

  • The dungeon is, in overall, awesome. Aside for the incredibly boring jellyfish fight, all mechanics are fun and feel unique. I’m hoping future dungeons get handled similarly, with some randomization of events too, instead of the same thing at every run.
  • The new area feels a lot more like an endgame area. It’s unforgiving, with powerful monsters, where you either get a good group or pick up your fights very well. The events are lacking, but I’m assuming more events will come once the event officially ends and the scaling stops (if that happens).
  • The final event was really good, and actually challenging. Seeing dozens of people drop in one hit may be cheap to some, but it adds a sense of danger and makes you pay attention to the surroundings.

The bad:

  • Ascended items. Yeah, it has been discussed over and over, but they really seem a pointless addition that enforces grind, be it for mats or for higher levels in the dungeon (not everyone likes doing dungeons, and they shouldn’t be forced to do it to stay even at wvw). Plus, the way we’re forced to have it to protect from a condition specific to it that is in no way avoidable with player skill just makes it a cheap addition.
  • The event dragged on too much during the reinforcement parts. Take these out or cut them to 1/5th of what they where and the event quality would increase a lot.
  • The rewards for the final event were too good. One-time events shouldn’t be profitable, but memorable. Something like an account bound unique skin, like the halloween books, would be a lot better. Just giving good tradeable items will make everyone who couldn’t take part feel cheated, and the next events to be filled with people just thinking on how much money they’ll get on the end.
  • The lag. Insert any of the many posts about lag here. But what caught my eye most is how the player/server connection seems to handle bottlenecks: Everything around me has higher priority than me on my connection. Shouldn’t it be the opposite? Like, if I have a bad connection, it will cheap out on my surroundings making my allies and their attacks not load or my enemies suddenly teleport, instead of me being able to see everyone run towards the boss like nothing has happened while I get my actions delayed by 10 minutes?

people dont read lol, the gear will only be needed “in the new dungeon”

But it will be useful everywhere in game. It will be best in slot, as per ArenaNet’s own words. So if you do any other dungeon in Exotics, your gear is sub par and people with Ascended will tear through it faster than you can. If you hop into WvWvW and your opponent has Ascended gear, he’s going to perform better than you – kill your team faster, take down your forts faster, and be harder to kill. Imagine if a whole group of enemies in WvWvW are in Ascended and your team isn’t. If you go to Orr to do DE’s, the guys with Ascended gear are going to tag more mobs, get more drops/gold/karma, and survive longer.

See the pattern? It’s going to affect the entire rest of the game. Don’t be so naive to think it’s not a big deal.

It’s such a bad idea to design a game around the 1% that will be super hardcore that are going to eat through your content in a week and then get bored, every kitten time. Blizzard and Trion have already run into this problem – why does ANet feel the need to alienate their core playerbase for a few hardcore players that aren’t going to change their habits no matter what you do?
