Putting 40 exotic level 80 Staffs into the Mystic Forge and guess what happened?

The RNG in this game is well over the top. I have no problem with having to work hard to get items, but gambling at some mystic forge is not fun. It stinks of lazy design to me. Legendary weapons should have epic quest chains, tough encounters, difficult and even costly materials to obtain. Farming and such should be par for the course, but throwing a bunch of stuff into the forge and crossing your fingers should not be a major part of this game.
Ultimately, hard work and dedication should be enough for people to obtain the legendary they require. It should not need all of that plus a HUGE amount of luck in the mystic forge. I seriously hope Arenanet thinks twice about the RNG in because it is actually the single worst part of the game.
It has all of that, plus the over the top RNG. Just the 250 vials of powerful blood alone are expensive, nevermind the (literally) over a thousand totems you’ll need to transform into elaborates (and potent bloods into powerful, and large into armored scales…) for the mats, which gets expensive itself but is still nevertheless more cost effective than buying the mats directly and saves on farming time.

You could collect mats and make the rare staves yourself, for free. It’s also how I plan on getting up to 250 ectos. I’m huntsman so I’m doing it with rifles and pistols (and going to throw shortbows I make myself into the forge) so you could do it with staves on artificing or whatever makes staves.
I agree,
in theory sacrificing stats for more loot sounds like a reasonable trade-off.
But considering the nature of the game, the fact that farming PvE events is virtually no challenge etc. it really doesn’t work out that way.
In effect, Magic Find creates a huge gap between those that farm Orr with MF gear for a while and those who don’t.
We’re already getting to the point where you can’t compete in the market without farming your way through Orr with MF gear. It’s just poor design.
You try being feared or pulled by a spider web while everyone collects loot while you’re running away or downed =( They should be programmed to target warriors first, seriously.
“It comes down to the simple fact that by botting you can make a profit, there is no real risk to you as a player if done properly. You could buy two accounts, play one and bot one. The bot one may get banned one day but not before you have farmed enough to cover your outlay and probably a lot more.”
Both accounts would have the same IP though.
Make a warrior and craft its way to 80. Axe 5 has a very short animation time and CD with high damage output. I don’t have a warrior in live but I see warriors a lot in these events, and when they get in range to do that ability the HP of everything around them suddenly drops whereas as a thief I need a few hits with clusterbomb and manage initiative carefully.
I’ve stopped bothering to do Claw of Jormag (not to mention the others)…the corrupted lodestones never drop from the icebrood veterans/champions that I can tell and the chest is filled with useless garbage every time (yay, three blues!).
Grinding Plinx (in a group, max magic find) is much better money.
This. Though I did get a corrupted lodestone the other day from one of the crystal prequest. I sold it on the TP for 70s since that was the highest buying offer.
As someone who has completed Jourmag multiple times and the fire elemental never (to be fair my elementalist was new at the time) I can’t agree: Mobs there one shotted my character and would lava field downed players =(
I have some great (I think) medium armor. Much of it looks great on female characters and I look totally awesome on my male human, like someone girls would actually want to date. I could either dress up as a dashing pirate or a ninja ^_^
I naturally go elsewhere online or IRL after a round or a couple since it’s repetitive. I may even go mine (I need it for the ecto and eventually making forge fodder). But it’s a fast, efficient way to earn loot and karma. The problem is, everyone else in the game knows it too, especially axe 5 warriors.
All I have left to say in response is: Nuuuuuuuuuuu….. (I’ve fallen deep into the abyss, you can no longer hear me yelling, “Nuuuuuu…….” but I’m still yelling it as I sink downward infinitely)
No thanks. >.<
Don’t need artificial number inflations for more content. Don’t need to ‘feel stronger’… compared to newbs. There are games for flexing the E-[censored].
I already make new alts, sooo… this is a pro how? And how would no new crafting tiers be a bad thing? Don’t need ‘tiers’ to make more gear. They can introduce new recipes for new skins.
We don’t need more levels. Additional content for a variety of levels would be nicer.
How is the number inflation “artificial”? A level 80 sword is stronger and sharper than a level 70 sword, and along down it goes. You need more power to take on bigger and badder foes.
I think we all know which classes would be at the top (warrior, maybe engineers too with their flamethrower spam) and bottom (mesmers), but think there should be an experimental control group done with the Plinx chain, Penitent, and the other end of the tunnel. Not only would it be done by class but also weapons, so shortbow thieves among thieves would rank highest among them, but still lower overall, etc.
I think this should be done in order to give devs a basic idea of who tends to have an easier time with farming events, and maybe add a longer animation and nerf damage to axe 5 or speed up shortbow 1 and 2 for thief a little, and give mesmer a PBAoE like axe 5 (and everyclass really, it could even be a weapon like one you pick up from a vendor with 100 or so charges on it).
They can kite a class with a ranged cripple, rapid fire, and can turn their back to the target and use the “3” ability (pushes back and leaves a poison trial)? Wow, that does sound overpowered.
Me with the Mystic Sword just because I figured I’d try something new. It was a tough choice between that and Honor of Humanity (almost went with that too because it was less expensive and the stats and the gladius model is really awesome), but the Mystic Sword has some cool lightning effects.
In reference to Attachment’ kitten Yet another evidence against the claims of those who say medium armor in this game is “ugly”, that’s a nice looking set =)
“You could use WASD you did not need to point and click. The only thing I use jumping for is jump puzzles and when I am bored. It has no real use in combat.”
The prospect of WASD movement makes me want to throw up and before getting a Razer Naga always rebinded these (A = “1” skill like hemo, W = backstab or arcane blast depending on the class, S = eviscerate, D = stealth for example) as skills should be near homerow the more often you’d use them with something like smokebomb being binded to 3 (longer cooldown = further from homerow as a general rule).
As for jumping it can be useful as there are places mobs can’t reach. They (thankfully) cannot jump, remember that for when you need to escape a certain situation. The only problem I have is “invulnerability” in these games if you manage to get a good vantage point. I can’t pelt them with fireballs yet they can stand under me hitting the air and damage me? That’s messed up (both WoW and SWTOR had those problems).
The point and click movement game with no jumping? No thank you. I uninstalled it the day I downloaded it for a free trial, and I stayed with SWTOR for months, which is saying a lot. Little things like movement mechanics mean a lot, and DCUO is only playable with a controller for example.
Could you list what you’re wearing/wielding Agemnon? I’m not a huge fan of the hat but otherwise I like the look quite a bit.
I love the hat since it’s very ninja ^_^ The main hand dagger (Usoku’s needle) too. Offhand has Glimmerfang ( I switch it out for knight’s pearl dagger in WvW or dungeons since Glimmerfang is a magic find exotic), and the bow is the bow of the pale stag. It’s crafted gear (the stats) mixed with level 70+ exotic duelist gear graphics. Got the pants and coat from exploration, rest from trading post. Named level 80 gear has the same graphics (I made an Errol’s coat in the forge and previewed and confirmed). Other than the ninja and pirate hats I always typically have hide helmet (and with this set I actually have show shoulders checked too!)
However, my typical color configuration is either ceylon with abyss lines, or blood, midnight sky, or emerald in place of the ceylon.
In the top picture is mostly spring ice with pastel rose in place of the abyss.

I have a balanced 20 power, 20 precision, 20 in the vitality tree, and 10 in the toughness trees respectively. It has an emphasis on offense, but is nevertheless balanced, meaning I don’t really have a counter (though on the other hand I don’t really counter anything myself, which is the weakness behind being balanced: you don’t have the defense to deal with attack specialists and you lack the offense to deal with defense specialists respectively).

Sure am glad I rolled a norn…
I don’t have a Norn (yet?) but I have an easier time on my human than my asura, don’t really know why but the camera is lower for Asura.
In all seriousness bots undercut everyone else and KS from legitimate players, they’re effectively stealing mats and gold from them.
You are being impatient, young one. Learn to think outside the box. Maybe you have to ask yourself why Anet didn’t ban them, perhaps they have good reason not to?
"
I’m an RPG racist. I don’t like the looks of those ugly freak non-human races.
Elf-type characters are barely ok if their hairstyle hides their ears. Norns are ok if I set the height slider to minimum.
I’m an RPG racist. I imagine there are many more like me, which is why the Charr area has much fewer players."
Still, seven feet tall is still freakishly tall (or is the Norn minimum 6’5" or whatever? hard to get a GW2 scale to real life scale conversion though I estimate the average human male in this game is 5’8", like IRL) =) Still, traditionally the other races typically either hate or think they’re so superior to humans, so I understand where you’re coming from, but their anti-human racism is done in an endearing way, like racism Asura has against humans, and the hate Charr typically have.
About a week ago there was an article on pcgamer.com where an Anet staff (can’t remember the name) was talking about how the great majority of the players created human characters and how charr and azura were the least created. Maybe that’s why their initial areas are empty.
Last night I went to Queensdale and had to wait in overflow.
I remember being eager to create my Asura elementalist because the race is just too cute! There is a certain insufferable genius quality to Asura combined with their cuteness that makes them a great race. I also played a Charr warrior in beta and I remember how tough the quests were (especially fire shaman) and how annoying and even difficult the ghosts and sometimes even ogres were to deal with.
I think the majority are rolling humans because they want to firmly establish their mains (full exotic on a level 80 at least, in addition to some skins they want) before moving onto alts of other races. Heck, my new main is a human thief, leaving my old character behind (at least temporarily), most especially due to the whirlpool nerf and extra skill needed for minimal rewards (he has great support, but supporting doesn’t contribute to rewards =( )
You also have to consider the men who roll female characters, and as humans ourselves IRL what race do you think would have the most sex appeal?
They are empty because they are far out of the way, making them expensive to waypoint. You could mine and log everything in Frostgorge then make an easy round through the Charr lands from there so long as you avoid hordes of ghosts (with blocks that inflict burning, a lot of ranged, etc., so they contribute to the emptiness too).

Honestly, much of the difficulty from Obsidian Sanctum comes from poor camera management. It’s hard to aim your character properly if the camera has no leeway.
Comparing older games to newer ones: I played the first Final Fantasy and it was hard! Mana management was the name of the game and you had to figure out where to go, and some mobs had attacks that could wipe out your entire team, and could come in packs. Phantasy Star IV was also hard and had a pretty cool story with anime cutscenes. Star Ocean: The Second Story, Breath of Fire series, I remember. Kid Chameleon, Alex the Kidd, and Ghouls and Ghost were also really hard.
At least you still have EvE, and Vampire: The Masquerade MMO is coming out from the makers of EvE, and it also has permadeath.
I think it’d be great if Anet made deals with other companies to place products into the game. It’d be great extra revenue and who wouldn’t want to equip, “Marc Jacobs’ knight coat” or, “Dorito’s berserker dagger”. Billboards in Lion’s Arch and subtle signs in random houses would be cool too. I think the idea is great in moderation though, too many billboards or even subtle references would be too much.
…did you make this just to make a reference to the presidential debate, or is this a serious suggestion?
Some rifles in the game do have bayonets. Heck, I’ve even seen some blades on pistols.

Artificial Barrier?? I would say it’s a lot more artificial to be able to go into an area filled with dangerous creatures and be able to wipe them all out without raising a sweat
.
The problem with that logic is those creatures aren’t dangerous to those who are powerful enough. A fighter jet may be dangerous to you, but to Superman it’s no credible threat. If you have the strength/adept enough in magic/whatever then you could handle what you couldn’t before.

Absolutely! I’d love to KS some newbs lol! ^_^ Seriously, in WoW the motivation was grinding reputation whereas here there’d still be incentive because that’s where low level mats are for leveling secondary professions.
If there are ever mounts implemented then there needs to be a special jousting mechanic for them and (to take a page out of Wonderland Online’s book except here they’d be craftable instead of having to buy them with IRL money like over there) have specific saddles on them to increase certain stats, like a toughness saddle, power saddle, etc. Basically, classes could use spears, lances, bows, or tridents, and the abilities would be different from underwater. Also, the mounts themselves would be cosmetic, but there would still be fine (ordinary horse) through exotic (unicorns or pegasi, but despite having wings wouldn’t be able to fly) mounts.

Us thieves use bows too you know! :D
Just ignore any card without a 6 at the beginning as they all cost roughly the same while the 6 means current generation, 5 previous, etc. So hypothetically a 660 is about as powerful as a 570, since the first number is the generation whereas the second is the tier. The highest is the 690, but no one really needs that kind of power, the next down is the famous 680, then 670 (what I have), and 660. If budget is important to you then go with the 660.
I’m personally noting a big improvement. Looks like warriors want all of the loot instead of just most of it.
I’m really sick of people dragging a chain of mobs behind them and having those mobs end up on me when I’m otherwise not involved.
Two things:
-those mobs should not peel off of the person who aggroed them without a reason – like another player attacking, healing, doing SOMETHING other than just being near.
- you should NOT be able to gather from nodes while in combat – a large amount of the training is due to people tapping nodes and not bothering to fight. You can’t seriously get me to think that this game was designed so people could avoid fighting mobs that easily…while gathering. You get interrupted if you’re looting a chest and get hit…why is it any different for gathering? It’s expoitive.
If only it were as easy as you make it out to be. In Melchor’s Leap there are really painful places to gather that I don’t even bother with due to the mob density, and if I really want that node then I’ll just shadow refuge, relog (workaround since you’re oftentimes still in combat if they reset back to their original positions), and mine/log away. I’m not talking the area with the earth elemental veteran, which is manageable for prepared players, I mean farther west by the catapults.
Of course there’s going to be questing/dungeon builds and PvP builds! Fighting a big dragon that could two shot players and three or four shot tanks with special abilities with tons of HP is going to be different from fighting players who have roughly the same HP and skills you do. This is why knight’s gear and the power/toughness/vitality gear is a godsend for dungeon goers. You will take a lot of damage in dungeons, guaranteed, so you may as well prepare yourself to survive the impact whereas all that defense isn’t going to help against stunlockers with insane burst (well it can depending).

I would remove level scaling.
Griefing lowbies by KSing them or one-shotting them in WvW would be fun wouldn’t it? On a serious note it’s so firmly established within the coding of the game and is such a fundamental part of it, and far too much would have to be reworked if they were to remove it. From a story perspective it’s hard to reconcile it as an acceptable break from reality… unless you interpret the actions of your character as not being within a linear time frame. In other words, everytime you’re in a level 10 zone you’re actually seeing a few months to a year ago while teleporting to Orr means you’re viewing your character in his/her present, while going to a level 60 zone you’re looking into your character’s past from a month ago, etc.
Hard to find any one thing, but for starters in no particular order:
1. Camera is too low and it’s hard seeing anything behind me unless I autorun and switch the camera behind me.
2. Targeting. Makes no sense to hit tab and something way off screen is targeted instead of the mob right next to my rally monkey.
3. Add resolve to PvE (for players only) to prevent mob and catapult stunlocking.
4. Scale mobs’ HP with how many people are doing an event, so everyone doing the Plinx chain and the after events could get loot, even mesmers and eles.
[quote=495745;Shomaruki.7395:]
Did you try to go pass a group of mobs without fighting? If it is the case then it is all your fault. You aggroed 5 mobs of the same type (the same skills).
I did it once with the Earth Elemental (cripple spam) and since than I never go through a group without a fight.
So its good game play to be forced sometimes to fight every mob in order to just get from one place to the next when there is ZERO incentive to fight. No exp, minimal to laughable rewards. Are we playing a Japanese RPG from the early 90s where you have to get in a fight every 10 ft? C’mon, are you on the dole for defending terrible game mechanics like this?
ANET should have designed the zones properly in the first place or wonder why people would rather run past mobs instead of fighting them. Of course this is something that should’ve been figured out in EARLY beta, but who’s counting=)
Those are RPGs, they’re actually quite fun whereas MMOs like WoW and GW2 are more comparable to action games like Link but with more complex mechanics. The only MMO I played that even put RPG in MMORPG is Wonderland Online, but that game is heavily pay to win with a vengeance.
I second this! I think we need a PvE version of resolve where players have a resolve bar to avoid this kind of stunlocking. Our dodges are limited and oftentimes need to stall to get it back up. Certain mobs have cripple, and this makes such kite healing skill/energy stalling far more difficult, because if your movement speed is reduced it makes it far easier for them to get hits in, and you better hope that DoTs don’t kill your rally monkey.
I like the OP’s idea but I bet that something similar has been thought of by game designers too. I bet they were told that the more complicated something is, the easier it is to bug out.
And as far as mobs running away, that’s more realistic, but in a different game that was more that way I got so tired of chasing a mob all over the place. In the end it just got tedious. So more intelligent mob behavior is good to a point.
As it is now, the game is geared for you to quickly move from event to event. If it is changed so that each event lasts a lot longer, then the loot needs to be scaled up to compensate. Yes I would prefer events that aren’t just an explosion of aoe then its over, but I also want to be able to afford to buy armor and pay for waypoints and repair and crafting. On the other hand, as it is now, loot is often not that great because mobs are often dead before you get to tag them so maybe it wouldn’t change that much.
Just scale up HP with players. They don’t have to have veteran HP, just enough for everyone in the event to tag them enough for loot.
“Great idea, I do fear that people simply won’t bother though. Why spend so much time doing that when you can just spam your AOE and get loot and get the same reward in the end anyway? There’s a reason people zerg the easy, straight-forward events and avoid the ones that actually require coordination and are different. I mean, no one kills the champion shark in Orr.”
The champion shark can 1-shot people, and even if you use a cripple on it he can still reach you, no fun at all. They could improve the chances for rarer loot or give a magic find buff for an hour after killing it to incentivize people doing it. No one also does the quest by the pirate ship either.
" melee centaurs charge them, ranged centaurs fan out and snipe"
The flaw with them fanning out is that you could only hit them individually, and abilities like thief’s shortbow 1 or knife 4 or elementalist staff air 1 would be rendered useless (cripple? Please, how is that going to disadvantage something that could stand there and attack at range?) If such fanning out becomes more common then some class (or classes) would need a magnetic field to pull the mobs into the same area to mitigate such fanning.
Dungeons do need better rewards though. Tokens are good, but the thing is you’re repeating content to obtain enough for a legendary or piece of armor. If you clear all the paths then you know for a fact you’re capable of completing the dungeon, but I suppose the extra is necessary as you’re helping others complete their runs (or I think that’s the idea behind repeating to give incentive to helping newcomers to the dungeon).
