What would you expect to be the difference between that and a cryptographic quality RNG with an analog seed?

Predictability.

If there is a correlation of successive values in the results of the random number generation, there is an increased likelihood of repeated success… and potentially why we see some players who pop multiple precursors out of the forge in a relatively short time period.

Please note that I’m not a disgruntled RNG’er looking for rationalization of personal bad luck, this has come out of playing this game for over 5600 hours and 5000-ish on GW1, where I was a pre searing trader who noticed patterns in when to expect players to visit me with their black dye drops to sell.

If the RNG system for the GW1/GW2 engine is the same, these patterns over time from the old game may be relevant to the new one.

Either way, it’s more of an academic question — I don’t expect, demand or hope it to be changed.

Since the “discuss rng conceptually” thread appeared, I have put more time into learning about current RNG models.

I felt, anecdotally, that there were a number of instances in my own experience, and in forum posts, regarding “runs.”

For example, 3 of 5 members pf a partty I was in for Tequatl recently got exactly the same aquabreather, and none of us had seen one in quite a while before that.

I got two Truths in two consecutive bags in EoTM, two weeks previous to that.

Back to the question..

In my research, I learned that there is a statistically disproportionate chance of runs in some pseudorandom number generation models (apparently, Java uses one of them, for example.)

Is the model used by Guild Wars 2 using the generator of its language, custom designed, chipset seeded, or…?

John, I imagine you have the tools to do an analysis of the quality of the rng model for the game. Has this been done, or are you willing to? I do understand you may not be able to publish your findings…

EDIT: This is a real, twchnical question with a finite answer. There -are- issues with some random number generators. Please read this to educate yourself on the topic:

Bonetti’s Rapier.. Three times, this week. I got two other exotics from the chests, but overall I agree that there doesn’t feel like enough variety in what exotics come out of each type of loot box.

It can’t just be me, because that Rapier went from 12g to 6g since the patch.

805 days of playing. This is something new..

Twice.. and only twice.. I’ve had the game completely chug to single digit FPS, which has been resolved by exiting and restarting. Once it froze up solid, the other time I gave up before it got worse.

I love you all, and this game.. there is a tiny leak somewhere….

As someone who plays all the races and classes, I find the latest build has the camera a bit.. a lot… too high for the norn. I can’t see npc’s when I am speaking with them, zoomed all the way in.

Please adjust more, perhaps? If you need screenshots, I will be happy to oblige.

That’s your problem though, not the game’s. PC games often have a higher technical cost of entry than consoles, because of the availability of upgrading hardware. It has always been this way since I started in 1980. If it wasn’t for this advancemwnt, we’d all be playing in black and white.

That said, i’ve experienced a couple of memory leak issues in the latest build that bring the game to a screeching halt. Try restarting the client if it hits you.

Bonetti’s Rapier down from 12g to 5g, for example. If you have lots of gold saved up, its appreciating in value right now.

I’m glad to see there is a farm to switch between with Orr, to avoid diminishing returns penalties.

You dont’t have to play the living story episodes now, if they are too difficult for your experience level. There are plenty of other maps to keep you busy and help familiarize you with navigating the environments, and living world stories will still be there when you are ready.

New content doesn't seem Solo friendly.

No problems playing the story solo.

No problems playing the open world solo. I was surrounded by other people.. I read map chat, and kept an eye on the enemies.

If you die a lot, drill down on why and work toward fixing that challenge.Repeat until you are the master.

This isn’t Dragonvale.

End boss fight is really frustrating

I play the living story episodes with my 8 year old son.

During the last boss fight, I was getting frustrated, but he explained to me what we had to do. Once he did that, we were able to easily defeat the boss.

I played it again solo, later on, and it was trivial, with the mechanics already in mind.

Short answer: next time, get help from a young person.

Is the plan to apply MF to account bound bags, like in PvP?

The experience of diminishing returns in the rat farm suggests to me that its not viable to stay in one area for the amount of time MF buffs are active — unless DR is based on kill count in a map and not time.

If it’s kill count, how does this impact the mob battles in Orr?

If it’s time…. Waiting for events….

I find it quite insane to blame the developers for creating content which “brings out the troll” in people, there are jerks in the world, and they will be jerks no matter what. They find trouble in anything, mo matter how much you sanitize it.

right now, i see people who couldn’t get in on the reliquary farm trying to grief the farmers…“nerf it! You aren’t allowed to have fun that way!” this just happens to be in the real world.

What’s worse about this is my ignore list doesn’t work on the forum, so I can’t get away from the griefing.

Tl;dr: Anet doesn’t ruin their game, kittens do.

Guild Wars 2 is amazing :) Stop complaining.

This is the one part of the original game vision that I am sad to see gone. In spite of the complaints arising from people not being able to play during the original Southsun Cove events, it was an epic experience that is one of my favourite, over the life of Guild Wars 2.

I feel that having regular, ongoing and randomly initiated “live” events like this would really make Tyria a living world. By regular, I mean often enough that most sane players would not be expect to attend all of them.

This is like real life., you can’t be everywhere for everything, but those moments where you are at the right place at the right time make a personal, memorable experience to be nostalgic of, long into the future.

I still enjoy all the content we do get….

I do appreciate that it isn’t the greatest news for players who have already completed their festival storyline. Only because I have an alt account that I didn’t play the story on is the opportunity available for me.

Positive outcomes of the farm:

1) since it’s a solo instance, there is no toxic zerg mob yelling at people for trying to complete events.
2) people buying thousands of bags will benefit from the increased supply.

On that note, I’ve created a second video, showing how to farm with 2 balms per run instead of one. Note: I am only doing this farm, and posting the videos, because a red post officially stated that this isn’t an exploit.

I am actually more concerned about the shared farm. People are using low level characters (2-5) to tag the transformed mobs to get additional bags. The lvl80 will then kill them. This allows up to 5 people to farm the ToT bags simultaneously in the dungeon. Potentially more in open world (such as Rata Sum), depending on the damage per hit.

Doing this allows for a single vial to yield (5×9) 45 ToT bags. If you don’t deem this exploit then I really don’t know what would be called an exploit any more.

There is no concern here. Only one person can transform the rats to bags and the rats do not loop.

I spend equal time using a level 20 character and a level, both are able to kill the candy corns they create in equal time.

I really need to finish my article about artificial runs in “loot luck” resulting from the use of memory values to seed a random number generator. Thing blocks of unused memory areas where are the values are the same.

Teq a few nights back… 3 of 5 party members got the same underwater breather (same weight, too). How often does that happen? I haven’t seen the breather in ages.

A week before, I got 2 bags in a row from EoTM with “Truth” in them, and no other exotics in the previous month or since then, with the same content.

… more research must be done … !

Things I’ve learned..

1. DR is very much character bound
2. DR can be “cleaned off” by AFKing in another map for 25 minutes (maybe 20?)
3. I get a consistent 30 times through (one balm each time) before DR immediately turns my 9 ToT bags into 3.
4. Each run takes me about 45 seconds, WP to pickup and reload.
5. Getting 9 each time requires you avoid overlapping candy corn spawns. Give them space. and you can take a few extra seconds to get a good shot.
6. You can use 2 balms per run, but I don’t find it as efficient, because of #5. If you don’t have an SSD, it might be worth it.

As of this writing, I was looking at 16-17g/hr profit after buying the maize at a high price.

Now you know what to do, this Sunday, if you have access to the instance.

The most important thing I see, here, is that this is an opportunity to get a very “pure” sampling of how diminishing returns works with loot farming. You are supposed to get 1 bag per candy corn, and there is no magic find effect on it. The loot table is taken out of the mix and it’s right down to: how much can you do before you are punished for it.

From this experience, I am once more concerned about the value of MF buffs, as the “timeout” before they become pointless appears to be much lower than the length of the buff. Unless you have two farms to swap between every 20 minutes, you are losing potentially up to 30% of your buff time in cooldown on another map. Not good for Cursed Shore farmers, who have to spend long periods just hanging out in the map waiting for the big events to start.

That said, because this farm did not appear to be affected by DR before the patch (I ran it for a good hour with no impact on drops), I feel there is reason to theorize that DR is selectively applicable, as needed, to maps.

Hi all!

I bought the Noble dress last night, because it looks stunning! Thanks for the amazing design.

After a bit of moving around in my newly dyed attire, I noticed that the underside of the dress has a black area which a) hangs lower than the dress does, when standing around, and is b) very visible when running.

Other skirts and dresses in the game (from what I’ve seen) don’t have this.

Is this something you are able to remove? I understand that this is Outfit vs. Armor piece, but I don’t see (as a Maya veteran since 1.0) how it restricts your model design.

The watchwork (which I own and love) precedent always makes me pause, when I am compelled to buy another tool. For me, taking away the bonus would make it easier for me to make future tool purchases.

Got up this morning, went to EoTM and started killing again…

After a couple of kills, no change..then, we hit a zerg and suddenly I was up to 8/10 invaders killed.

Capped slowly reached 5/5, but I was able to watch it -not- tick up when we took the airship.

Once again, I got rewards and loot for kills and caps that did not appear to track.

Hi guys,

I played EoTM earlier in the day and got a seemingly low 2/10 captures and 1/10 invaders for the short period of time I played it. So, I did fractals, 3 CoF (1,2,3) runs and then went back to WvW, this time borderlands, to finish off the last two dailies.

I ran with a commander for about an hour, killing a number of enemy players, npcs, and capturing multiple supply points, and even twice our own Garrison. I got plenty of loot, a couple of levels, and XP/chest rewards at each capture.

When I quit for the evening, I checked on my achievement points and discovered that my invaders had moved to 2/10 and the captures was also still at 2/10.

Ideas? I have over 16,700 achievement points, so I’m used to meeting the requirements (damage amounts, etc) to reach each of different daily options.

I have been leveling up yet another mesmer, this time in EoTM. I have around 15 or so characters and this is my first one with the new NPE.

At first, the lack of some functionality felt limiting.

Now, when I level up and see that icon in the corner, i’m excited to see what reward I get! Rare armor, breather, etc.

For me, as a serious veteran player, i really like this part of the system!

Well, for me the stats on the gear are all wrong, and I can’t salvage or sell it, so…..

Replace all boxes, bags, etc

Instead of a champ box, loot bag, etc, I propose that the applicable foe drop the equivalent of what the content of the container would usually be.

Why? Because the more containers we get, the less our loot is affected by magic find.

My proposal makes magic find more relevant and keeps the motivation for players to fight champs.

That said, champs give crappy loot per minute compared to scaled up mobs.

The perspective of someone with over 5,600 hours since launch and so many of those farming the various events.

Example.. Look how amazing Arah defense loot is, with only a minimal number of champs, compared to the Penitent-to-jofast insanity of champs when a reasonable sized zerg is participating.

Finally: farmers are good for controlling inflation, as the goods they put on the trading post are taking gold out of the economy. (Ie: fees). Providing non-toxic farming opportunities is where we will find the best solution,
