I’d call the Forgotten and the Losaru tribe a civilization. No cities, mind you (well, no cities that weren’t decaying from a failed human colonization attempt).

They’re nomads, no? moving around from oasis to oasis. That makes them a civilization, even though mobile

That is entirely Konig’s point. I’m not sure how you missed that.

he just said “no cities” so that could’ve still meant anything

I wouldn’t even say it was free then. It was just never free. it was a gift for active players at that time

I think what really bothers me the most is that the story for HoT is continued from the events of LWS2. Yet, if you didn’t read through the story or have the ability to actually play it, most of HoT wouldn’t make a great deal of sense. I mean, why would I care about Kaithe or that stupid egg?

I just figured it would unlock once I finished the main story quest line.

Oh well, at least it’s easy to trade gold for the gems.

I agree to some extend. It was just a really weird decision to include Core, HoT, but skip LS2. I mean, that makes little sense to me. If it were me, I think they should’ve included LS2 into the core game and made the HoT expansion a top up

I honestly don’t know. But it’s quite easy to get an exotic set.
Meta would be Viper for the Burning Berserker or Berserker for the berserker Berserker (I understand that sounds weird) but you can easily get them by buying a set of exotic Bladed Armor or Leystone Armor.
Burning Berserker uses a sword/axe+warhorn and a longbow, focussing on burning of course, while berserker Berserker uses a greatsword for damage and often a hammer or longbow as offhand for the CC

When you said the 20th was the last day for SAB i thought you meant that either it would go away on the 21st, or I’d at least have till reset on the 20th. I ONLY HAD TO GET 4 MORE GREENS. I WAS GONNA GET AN ASCENDED ORANGE AND YOU’VE ROBBED ME! Why would you cut it before reset? Why?

You must be new. All festival stuff ends at 9 AM PST on the date announced it’s going to end. Not once in the history of GW2 have they ever stopped a Festival at reset time.

They extended halloween once, but that was for secondary reasons, so it doesn’t count as a normal situation

To add to Castlemaniac’s comment, I think it’s because of the neurodegenerative disease that’s all the more capable on her own. Remember, she doesn’t want to be pitied or take extra care. So she’s always moving many steps ahead to make sure she’s just as good, if not better, than her fellow asura. So I think she’s very adaptable and not keen to give up. She’s propably preparing for all kinds of worst case scenarios so she won’t fall behind.

As to the last point you raise, of phlunt taking the waypoint recalibrator, there’s a good logic behind it:
I am a biochemist and from experience I know: Everything I do, find out, research, discover, etc, belongs to my supervising professor. As long as I am I their student, everything I do belongs to them. Even if I discover something on my own without any of their support, it’s theirs. To some this may seem unfair, but it’s the harsh truth of this world. As long as you’re an underling, even if you’re abroad, all you can earn are accolades.

Megaservers: my one big gripe

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Amaimon.7823

I don’t think it’s solely a megaserver problem – I think it’s a combination of megaserver and the way most event maps run on a fixed schedule.

It actually works quite well on the Silverwastes, the only event based map without a fixed schedule. Typically when I go into the map, I’m on one that’s just about to start, giving me the choice to experience the whole thing, or use LFG to join a map that’s made some progress. The LFG is also a little less frantic, because it isn’t going to be the only opportunity to do the event for several hours.

But there we have the same problem, sometimes LFG has zero taxis for Silverwastes, even though I know from guildies or friends they are on an active map. meaning that without a contact on said map it’s impossible for me to join and enjoy that active map.

WP videos are well-constructed and presented, but I gotta disagree with a lot of what he’s saying, especially concerning raids (to clarify, I’m not against raids, I think there is room for them in GW2, but he tends to imply that it’s the best thing to ever happen to GW2, which is highly subjective)

Anyway, it brings more publicity to GW2, so it can’t hurt, as long as it’s not the only voice that is heard.

I personally love raids, they give me a bit of challenge I have been yearning for. My experience in the personal story has been one of low concern. I mean that in the sense that “it doesn’t matter what I do, I win”. You understand what I mean, I can completely slack off, and still “win” and that doesn’t sit right by me. GW2 lacks something GW1 had and that is a fail condition. Missions reset when an important NPC dies, or when an objective lost or not captured in time. But in GW2 you can endlessly try again and again, ressing (or downright ignoring) important NPCs, with only the breaking of your armor as a real limiter. So for me raids have been very welcomed as it’s content I have to actively pursuit progress and have true fail conditions.

But I agree, not everyone may see it that way, for some people the bar may be too high. I personally just see them as fractals T5 (if I won’t get a rain of rotten tomatoes for saying that) and think that anyone who’s decent in T4 fractals really should try getting into raids because they’re actually not that much harder, the only difference is that they require a little more organizing.

But yes, they may not be the “best thing for gw2 since sliced bread” but they’re one of the best things in my opinion.

there was a timer that was ticking in hours for the past 48 hours, so you knew it was going to go.

There was a timer? Was it collapsed? I never saw it (not that I cared about SAB but the timer wasn’t that obvious).

when there were 48 hours left, there was a second precise timer live in the event box (top right corner) but you had to expand it. It used to day how many weeks left, then how many days, and then it counted second-specific from the last 48 hours. I watched with glee as I saw the timer die, and laughed as SAB died with it.
It wasn’t a hard timer though, people in the SAB lobby were kicked to Rata Sum, people in maps were allowed to continue, booted to Rata Sum if they left the active map.

[sub]Besides that I always find myself on different instances than guildies[/sub]

The fact getting on active maps gives me such a headache.
You go to any of the four HoT maps. Once there you will always, without fail, be planted on an empty, inactive map. This has a 100% guarantee. The next thing to do is get on an active map, which relies on other people being nice enough to have LFG queries.
Now, when it comes to the meta events, you can arrive as early as you want, it won’t matter. At some point, people are going to form the taxis to get maps full for the meta events. And here it’s not first come first serve, it’s anarchy. You join a group, and spam join on map, clicking away a hundred “the map is full”-errors (even when there’s only like 100 people in yet) and someone who joined later, may just steal your last spot away. And coming early won’t change it, because you have to wait for a taxi to appear in the LFG tool.

{rant} My request is simple: allow us to select map copies to join, and to queue when it’s full, and to STOP GIVING US THE FULL ERROR WHEN IT’S ONLY HALF FULL,
JUST TO MAKE US LESS DEPENDANT ON THE COURTESY OF OTHER PEOPLE {/rant}

Wooden Potatoes Grande Review

Amaimon.7823

The biggest problems I have with Wooden Potatoes are that, first, while he is very knowledgeable about the game, he does let ArenaNet influence his opinion more than he should (being straight up told on twitter that he should focus on the last raid when it dropped even though he had not originally planned to do so, for instance) and his tendency to blow off other opinions as trivial and temporary (again, we see that clearly in his second video here when he shrugs off raiding concerns as solely a result of the content drought – when those concerns persist heavily today).

And to be clear – I’m not saying he is a paid Anet shill. He definitely isn’t. But it is obvious that he takes at least some probably unintentional direction from them in what and how he covers things, probably from his respect for people at the company (which can be both a bad and a good thing).

That said, I do agree with some of what he said. I absolutely love season 3 of the living story and see the great work the anet teams are doing.

Video 4 has some very good critiques on the mastery system. I am personally a very optimistic person, so I’m not quickly annoyed or bothered by an anet decision, more than that I just think “shame”.
But some points I am peeved about. The underwhelming mastery system, the lack of lore in unlocking stuff, or involvement of events in the story. And thirdly, the playerbase attitude. I feel like people have been a lot more negative than they needed to be, especially the unlocking of the elite specs. I had no trouble unlocking them before the exp nerf, I consider myself a regular casual.

Because coordinating 10 people is hard? then how have hundreds and thousands of 10 man groups been doing fine in raids so far? I’m not saying the instance needs to be as hard as the current raids, just do the boss some justice

Yes, one of my friends is working on Ad Infinitum now. But they don’t look like normal gliders. My suggestion was more about having 1 or 2 better, but normal looking gliders. Ad Infinitum is a bunch of floating rocks and The Ascension is just a plain atrocity (no offense, anet) so I can’t blame my friends when they say those aren’t valid options when they just want a normal glider.
Normal gliders like: Classical, Shining Blade, Phoenix Kite, Ugly Wool, you know, a normal mechanical contraption with a cloth or solid surface. The gliders don’t have to be fancy, just normal, and slightly more sturdy looking than the basic glider.

The lack of Hype isnt helping GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

Hype is a double edged sword… too much of it and you raise player expectations beyond what is humanly possible to satisfy. HoT hype was so huge people were expecting 25+ maps with 100+ hours of story content and dozens upon dozens of new armor skins to collect.

I can already see the same thing happening for Expac2… People look at the leak and automatically assume that because a single screenshot shows the name of one town in the desert that we will automatically get ALL OF ELONA. Those people are going to be very very salty when their expectations are not met.

That’s what I really don’t get, why GW1 had 2 more FULL games (Factions and Nightfall) with tons of new maps, contents, armors and weapons but GW2 only get little expansions with so few new stuff compared?!!! (For the same price moreover….)
People want full new games like Elona or Cantha, or even something new but NO NEW EXPANSIONS WITH FEW CONTENTS!

I know how you feel, and GW1 was a great game, but please, consider this. Despite being very large, the maps of GW1 were actually very simple and empty. They could just render an entire plain, place a few enemies, and be done with it. Now we would burn those enemies down and be on the other side of the map, and then go to the forum to complain why there’s nothing to do on the map. Fighting was half the content of gw1 because every individual fight was a challenge where enemies could topple you if you’re paying attention. Nowadays we just grab a greatsword and mow the grass like a lawnmower.

wouldn’t it be great if the Deep See ED turns up somewhere around Cantha,
and Zhu Hanuku turns out to be it’s champion. I mean, it would make sense for a dragon champion to be so powerful that two clans with magical weapons could only annually incapacitate the beast. The elder dragon awake, and the Jade Sea melting could prove for the beast to become a much greater threat. And now that they’ve made so many enemies with the rest of the world, I think Cantha could actually turn into a ruinous state for us to rescue. (maybe a civil war?)

Amaimon.7823

Hello, Anet.

First and foremost I want to say you’ve done a terrific job with the gliders so far. I have bought quite a number of them by now, (I shiver at the thought of the money I’ve spend) but I think it’s well spend since I enjoy using every single one I have.

Now, I have some friends that are less.. endowed.. financially in the real world. I have to say it’s a shame to watch them glide on the rackity wooden rags that we call a glider. It looks like it could fall apart mid-glide any moment. My request, or rather, a suggestion, would be to have an end goal rewarding 1 or 2 glider skins for ingame effort, rather than outright purchase. It would bring value to some forgotten content of the game, or could otherwise inspire people to see more valuable gliders. (It would also help you, having 1 or 2 fancy gliders will inspire you to buy more in the gem store).

So I have thinking about the orders, have a themed glider for the three orders, Whispers, Priory and Vigil, as a reward for fully unlocking the armament collection (or something else). Now, I have gifted 2 or 3 gliders to others who simply couldn’t afford one with real money, but even I have my limits.

Of course there’s the usual But you can buy it with ingame gold to gem translation, yes, sure, but this ratio has become so wack lately it takes weeks or months of grinding tedious content to get a little bit of gold.

Can I restore any of my deleted items at all?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

yes and no,
anet can restore deleted or merchantyled items, but only to an extent.
The service is mostly for people who accidentally deleted or sold something of high value. If it’s been more than two weeks, or the value of low remark, they might not consider rolling back accidental deletions or sellings. Also note that items lost by the trading post can NEVER be recovered because it involved another player.
So, yes, there is a garbage bin they can recover items from, but no, the more items, the longer you wait, or the less value of said items the less likely they are willing to restore them. But it’s always worth a try and see to what extend they can help you.

What variety?!

8 outta 9 professions aren’t allowed the tank spot in runs. Chrono or get lost.
8 outta 9 professions aren’t allowed to be the healer, cause druid or go home.
8 outta 9 professions are flipped off if they wanna be the might stacker. PS warr or hit the road.

Above “variety” takes up 6/10 slots. Remaining 4 can only be dps (or kiter) and even there some prejudice runs rampant (too many want ele, cranger). And i’m cranger main myself when it comes to raids, so it’s not like i feel jeleaous or wanna cry out my “they didn’t want me” frustrations. It’s just the current, quite rotten state of affairs when it comes to “play your way” in raids…

But it’s how it always is.
If you change something with the intention of making everyone equal, they will just calculate the new best composition, and everyone has to adhere to that. You can’t get out of it in a society where only the max results matter. I don’t like it, but I man up and just make what people want, so I can raid. And honestly, I don’t really care anymore, I have a PS, I have a druid, I have an FA-ele and condi-necro. If anet tries to fix this, you’ll just end up with a different composition that EVERYONE MUST PLAY. When I raid with friends I am free to pick and do whatever I want, because we know even bad builds can clear raids. but pugs don’t want good raids, they want the best raids. 100% or nothing, 95% won’t do, if you want 95% you gotta play with friends or make your own pugs.

Best race for thief?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Amaimon.7823

Amaimon.7823

Considering Charr have an ENTIRE legion dedicated to assassination and the more subtle aspects of war, the Charr are a fine race to have thieves for. As for norn, well there is Snow Leopard who also has somewhat of a focus in teachings about stealth. Humans have the best fit in my opinion (especially street rats), but others may disagree. Sylvari to me don’t feel the thieving type lore wise, but there are plenty of examples of Sylvari who don’t share that wide eyed view of the world and see it in a darker tone than most (caithe and canach). Asura are really the odd one out in my opinion, since why would a known thief have any good reputation for research? Sure the inquest are shady, but they don’t respect the standards set by the rest of asuran society. Its a bit of a stretch in my opinion and I wouldn’t mind counters to the idea. Their small stature does greatly help the ability to be a thief, seeing as there’s less of you to hide when compared to a norn or Charr.

All in all, there is no ‘best’ race to choose for any profession. However, I chose a thief because when I made my first character, a human mesmer, I saw the street rat option and it all clicked in my head. Animation wise I couldn’t tell you which is the best since I only have one of each profession. However I would like one of each race and profession combination so my opinion may not be in line with the majority.

I didn’t say they couldn’t be assassins, I’m just saying I personally find it a bit hard to believe that a giant ferocious beast could hide in a corner. it would work in a jungle or somewhere else in the wild, but I have a hard time believing they can go unnoticed in a rural area or a city (unless they sneak around at night). But then again, stealth in this game has a magical aspect as stealthed people can walk in the middle of the road without being seen so maybe I’m just overthinking it

I’d say either of them or the asura, as Norn and Charr are a little too big in my eyes to be proper assassins (if they want stealth, that is)

If that’s not an indictment, I don’t know what is.

what taimi does is research how magic works and how it can be used against the elder dragons since they like it so much

Yes, we know that. But look at the entire structure of Asura culture. It revolves around competition to be the best in your field and invent the best things in your field. During this time of war, why is the most effective group of people fighting the dragons (the Commander’s party) toting around a young Asura who hasn’t even finished school? Why don’t we have someone from the top ranks of Asura culture who has already proven themself?

And frankly no one should be allowing Taimi to do this research. If a college student discovered a secret building with alien technology, the grown-ups he knows would not allow him to keep it secret and go in there and play with the technology. Especially someone who has essentially been a NATO commander. They would tell the relevant authorities.

In real life, the entire group would be brought up on charges for keeping this information from the Asuran government during a time of war. But in GW2 Taimi’s research will save the day so everyone will overlook what she did and how we helped her hide it. This is why the Taimi writing is nonsensical.

The Asuran government has no authority over the Pact Commander. For any Non-Asura, they don’t answer to the Arcane Council. For Asura – they stopped answering to the Arcane Council when said council tried to kill them.

And – the Pact Commander is currently the highest authority in Tyria due to being an Anti-Dragon superweapon. If Rata Sum tried to bring the commander and his party up on charges and take any actual action, the Asura would probably find themselves without a city, and a whole lot of wreckage and dead bodies.

That, and any or all authority of the arcane council ends at the border of Soren Dra, or outside facilities not supported by Rata Sum. That’s literally all the jurisdiction the Arcana Council has. It’s pretty much anarchy outside Rata Sum. I think the only reason asura stay bound to Rata Sum is, if they’re born and raised in it, propably all their funds depend on Arcana Council approval. Meaning they need to make enough money to cut their ties before they actually cut them. Or take the chances and join an order or crafting guild.

It’s just the background from the old character select screen, before they changed it for HoT. Example from 2012.

it looks nothing like that, it’s all black and smoldering now
(primordus confirmed?)

Notice how I used the word background. I was talking about the old LA artwork not being new artwork, not about the menu. The menu is obviously different, and yeah I think it’s about primordus given the colors.

Edit: All my characters have light skin and they all seem to have similar lighting effect that makes it look darker in areas like Ember Bay so it’s definitely scorching themed.

although, it has a bit of a purple hue as well.. so could it be Kralkatorrik as well?

“Confessor Caudecus, we’ve searched everywhere. She’s nowhere to be found.”

-Enough, you fool. Get out! I’ll find her.. I’ll find her if I have to burn down all of kryta..

Like fire, hellfire, now Demmi it’s your turn.
Choose me or your pyre, come home or you will burn!
The Six have mercy on her..
The Six have mercy on me..
But she will come home or she will burn!

For some reason I have this picture of Caudecus singing Frollo’s hellfire.. I dunno why.. for some reason it fits..

I dislike Taimi simply because I loathe Asura in general. There is an Asura-loving guild advertising in LA lately, and I want to join it then somehow do something terrible to besmirch its name. But I won’t, because I can’t even bring myself to pretend liking Asura.

That being said, I actually like Taimi’s kind of youthful/ringing voice. I just wish Ms. Derryberry (Taimi’s voice actor, for those who don’t know) managed to create a more distinctive voice for Valette Wi.

Why would you do that? Why would you go out of your way to make other people miserable? I don’t get it.. what do get in return other than more loath and spite

Heh mostly a joke (mostly). I really do harbor a strong dislike of Asura, but as I noted, even that doesn’t make it worth it to me to rain on their parade.

I personally love the asura as they’re the most unique race i’ve seen in any of many games I’ve played.
But I can understand a loathe for a specific race, even if it is without a clear reason. I absolutely DESPISE the quaggans and as soon as one is involved in the story, I no longer feel it’s a serious or real part of the story. Like you can just skip it and the story wouldn’t change. There were a few in the WinterFrontier, but luckily I only had to talk to 1 and could then ignore them for the rest of my life.
It’s like someone threw away an old design that didn’t make sense, and a dev walked past the bin and thought “hey, who threw a perfectly fine and usable race away” as he took his fifth bottle of rum and swiggled into his office

Starting area of the asura one of the very first event chains: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Protect_Orl's_research_krewe

Somehow I think you got asura backwards, they strive for knowledge but reluctantly share it (this was very evident in GW1 already where part of Eye of the North was convincing different asura to cooperate). So no, even in this respect Taimi is in character.

You keep comparing Taimi and GW2 to real world situations where there is already established precedent that some of those aspects are handled differently in Tyria.

They also forget that Rata Sum is a community, not a society. It’s merely a bunch of Asura who live in close proximety because it’s easier to get staff and resources that way, but they don’t have a government other than a socially funded unit of soldiers and politicians (mind I remind you that they’re the dreg of society who couldn’t get a job in any krewe).
When it comes to a proper government, the Inquest are much better organized, having a complete hierarchy and funding protocol. When an asura finds knowledge, she will of course be criticized by her peers but only because they wanted a piece. Only if something goes terribly wrong maybe the pact will interfere and ask her to stand trial to justify her decisions.
