Nah.

Being able to hold her own in a fight after being dropped out of an exploding aircraft, provided no medical care for gods know how many internal injuries from the impact, starved, dehydrated, and stabbed would have been the bad writing.

I think until raids are in and until fractal rewards are changed, and the new raid/commander UI is in, it’s still premature.

What an absurd thing to say. “You can’t judge the item for which you’ve already paid full price because there is a promise that more is to come.”

That stuff is coming in 4 days. It’s like saying you can judge a meal based on the appetizer alone. It’s all part of the meal even if it doesn’t come at once.

We were told raids would be coming after launch well before launch, because they wanted to give people time to level their masteries. And the raid UI is being worked on because of stuff the community asked for.

So it’s not absurd at all. It’s like judging the original Guild Wars 2 before guesting came out. It came out delayed and when it was put it it did what they said it was going to do.

MMOs aren’t racing games. It’s not just what you get in the box, but what it becomes.

I once bought a coral reef salt water tank. I paid a huge amount of money for it, and it was nothing but living rock in salt water for quite some time. But it grew and become worth the money.

I’m pretty sure that most MMOs and even most expansions at launch need improvement before they get to where they’re going.

Only the least experienced MMO players would say other wise, or people who are just generally disenfranchised and want to vent. Which are you?

Nice false dichotomy.

Perhaps other options exist? Anet sold the expansion as including Raids, new legendaries, etc and only announced that said would not be included at launcha fter collecting customers’ money. So perhaps people who want what they paid for are an option?

Adding raids weeks after HoT launch does not give people more time to level their masteries.

And, per your analogy, If your meal comes weeks after the appetizer you might have cause for complaint.

I think that an inability to react to a fairly slow, telegraphed, attack is a solid indication of something being seriously wrong with an experienced combatant of legendary status.

Norn are no more resilient than a human of comparable experience.

A, “gut shot,” is not necessarily a slow death. It can be very quick, particularly when the victim’s resistance to shock has been degraded by other injuries, deprivation, etc.

Assuming that Eir did not want to die, it is a reasonable expectation that if she was capable of an action that would have delayed or prevented her death she would have at least attempted said action. She did not dodge the death blow and so logically she couldn’t.

Ultimately she stared death in the face and didn’t falter, didn’t look away, didn’t blink. Brave as hell to the end. Definitely worthy of respect.

they’re not trying to screw people over

You are mistaken.

They intentionally took an action.

That action, “screws people over.”

They knew that the action would screw people over.

This means that they intentionally screwed people over. They may have thought that the benefits would outweigh the negative consequences but that doesnt alter the fact that the consequences were intentionally imposed.

If you know that doing X will result in Y and you intentionally do X anyway then you are choosing to do Y as well.

The link is here.

Some quotes:

“It’s great fun in the right circumstances, but when those circumstances shift a tad from the ideal, it falls a little flat on its face, with increasingly empty zones and the illusion of open-ended horizontal progression.”

“These are tough events, full of charging and swarming enemies that often make soloing impossible, which wasn’t a problem just a few days ago when Heart of Thorns was brand new and groups were plentiful. Just two weeks in, though, I already often find myself on maps with virtually nothing going on. I’m alone with these swarms. Sometimes a notice pops up saying that I’m invited to join a more populated map (with an XP boost, to boot), but oddly enough, it’s occasionally almost as unpopulated.”

“When it stumbles, it’s in its ostensibly open-ended mastery progression that’s more set in stone than it seems, and in its heavy group and dynamic event focus that doesn’t always jive with empty maps.”

If you want to talk numbers instead of text, HoT got a lower score than Guild Wars: Prophecies, Guild Wars: Factions, Guild Wars: Nightfall or even Guild Wars: Eye of the North.

Any particular reason that you only quoted negative comments rather than presenting a balanced view of what was said?

(and not even just a preorder, rather asking the full price)

This makes no sense. A preorder is a preorder. It’s one additonal option on how to purchase a game. Nothing more, nothing less. And of course it’s full price. Did you expect it to be half the price?

Yeah, because no one has ever said that “Pre-purchase means you buy the game for the full amount. Pre-order means you put some money down towards the full cost”.

And of course, ArenaNet has never made a preorder available to GW players, ever.

I would kindly suggest trying to find better places where to do your research than YouTube. Because, if you haven’t noticed, some people here know what they’re talking about.

There has been information on every major feature on an almost weekly basis since the announcement back in January.

Really? So when did ArenaNet tell people about the paragraph Vayne quoted, on how HoT would be almost entirely challenging content? When did they tell people about the cost of unlocking the elite specializations? When did they tell people about the number of maps available in HoT?

Was any of that in January?

Oh look, it wasn’t! What a surprise! Nor was it in February. Or March! Or April. Or May. June…? Nope.

Meanwhile, they have known for a long time now how few maps HoT would have. They didn’t decide the amount of hero points required to unlock the elite specializations two days before release. ArenaNet knew players wouldn’t be happy with those announcements and so they chose to only release them nearly the very end of the pre-launch period, after months of telling players to prepurchase quickly or lose the opportunity of getting a new character slot.

This was very obviously a way to fool people into buying the game as quickly as possible, with the least information – oh sorry, I guess some people think talking about hylek actually matter, so I’ll rephrase it: with the least relevant information – as possible.

The announcement at PAX that Heart of Thorns was going to be an expansion, back in January, stated that the content in HoT was going to be different than the core game and would be challenging.

Personally I think that tying the rewards to event completion is a reasonable solution to event mob farming interfering with event completion. But, “on kill,” triggers should occur even if a mob gives no loot or xp.

That said, I liked the idea put forward earlier that perhaps event mobs could give rewards for a limited time period during the event’s duration. Or perhaps a diminishing returns effect during the event duration.

Ashen.2907

Not really. Victim-blaming is, after all, the laziest possible approach to a given problem. Which pretty much describes the attitude of some people, who claim that nothing in the game is wrong and that it’s always the players’ fault that anything, from the smallest thing to the biggest outcry, appears to be wrong.

It’s rather obvious that, in an expansion for GW2, players would have expected content similar to that of GW2. To make HoT something so different that many players – for example, the one you were quoting (and not imaginary people like “everyone in my guild”) – do not enjoy it is completely on ArenaNet. They should have clarified it before the expansion was avaliable for sale, and the fact that some players weren’t aware of it is prood that ArenaNet wasn’t clear enough.

There aren’t any victims here to, “victim blame.”

The expansion was described as being more challenging.

Anet should have been more clear prior to putting the expansion on the market.

Players should probably not buy products before there is even a release date let alone description of what the content would contain to any degree of detail.

No amount of clarity will ensure that everyone will be aware.

To each his own.

I do find it interesting that most of those saying that they think these skins look good also say that that they wouldn’t buy them. It is odd when a product’s vocal supporters won’t spend money on it.

Well tbh it could be the fact that scraps/tickets are not so easy to come by (especially now that key farming is pretty much dead). Even if people do find these skins interesting and decent enough for them to use that is not to say that they would not rather save their tickets/scraps for if in case a new better, super, duper, uber looking skin set comes out next.

^

I used to be able to get a key a day or more and a ticket a month. Now it’s more like 6 months to get a ticket. If it takes me 6 months now to get one ticket I have to be more that just liking it. It has to be perfect for my char or something that I think will sell really well.

Solid points.

it’s reasonable for people to make monetary decisions based on the evidence they have. In this case, the nature of the PvE maps available. People that can reasonably expect more of the same.

On the other hand, if one’s tolerance or preference for challenge is restricted to what was presented in the core game, then it might not be reasonable to buy an expansion which has been advertised as being more challenging. Of course this point is exacerbated by the pre-purchase model.

To be fair, “more challenging” is kind of vague and doesn’t necessarily tell me that specific content (such as completing map items) is going to be so very different from the previous maps, including the ones that were added after launch. I assumed (wrongly when I pre-purchased, in this case) that it meant the enemies would have more challenging AI and the DEs would require more cooperation. It didn’t tell me several other things that I wouldn’t have automatically known from the term “more challenging” and others similar to it.

Completely agreed.

I do feel that Anet wasn’t as forthcoming as they could (should?) have been when describing the content.

You’re going to have raids. That was the promised challenging content. The base maps in the expansion shouldn’t be that challenging for the average player. If you re-read my post you’ll see that I said exactly this.

The problem with a statement of this sort is that it can just as easily be written as:

You have the majority of the game. The base maps in the expansion should be challenging for the average player.

I paid $50 for an expansion to a game that I enjoy. It is very reasonable to expect similar content from said expansion. I found that the content is not to my liking, and I am voicing my opinions and concerns. I don’t think it would be wise to continue this practice. It’s essentially saying “this new content is only for the elite, the average player need not apply.” Should the average, casual player not purchase future expansions? What do you think that would mean for the future of ANet?

^^^ See, this is a much better point to make.

Of course I have seen casual players commenting on how much they enjoy the new challenges. This may be a matter of differing definitions of casual.

For what it is worth, the elite are not likely to consider the open world content to be challenging. It isn’t for them. It is for everyone else.

I am not a fan of the subscription business model for games but this point is one that is all too often overlooked.

If you want most of what is offered in GW2, on a par with what you get included for the price of a monthly sub in a game like WoW, you are likely to end up paying more than $15 per month.

As work on Heart of Thorns wraps up, we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature priority
&
you will be hearing more from us about the work in progress.

I know they like bullet points, so here are some:

  • I, for one, am beginning to feel somewhat betrayed.
  • When everybody else was saying “they’ll never fix anything”, I said, “we have to wait and see”.
  • What an idiot I am.

If it matters:

Just found this from an interview with Colin at MMORPG.com

“That being said, I’d also add one of the goals of Heart of Thorns was to address every major game system to ensure they had all the core components we need for the future of the game. Our goal was to ensure we didn’t really need to tweak any major game system again after this expansion and our focus could be entirely on adding new content, and building on top of – rather than expanding outward systemically. WvW is the one major feature I’d say we didn’t end up accomplishing this goal, the project is so large it didn’t end up fitting into the scope of the expansion and we still have work to do to address core fundamental issues like population balance, rewards, scoring, night capping, etc. As always we don’t discuss features in development until they are far enough along to share meaningful details, so for now we’ll just say WvW is the final big game system on our radar – and we’ve had a lot of great conversations with our players about what they’d love to see from epic large scale PvP combat.” ~Colin Johanson

CJ did address the matter of WvW, elsewhere.

I am glad that Trahearne is gone. I will be happier still if it becomes clear that he was killed off, not as a knee-jerk reaction to being disliked by some portion of the player base, but rather because Anet is committing to better character writing going forward and have realized that this particular character carried too much baggage to be salvaged.

I do not blame Trahearne for stealing credit for anything as I am unaware of an instance in which he did so. I do consider him to be a poorly conceived and terribly implemented character on almost every level. He actively detracted from the experience of the story for me and so I am glad to see him go.

For those who liked Trahearne, my condolences. Hopefully characters introduced in the future will appeal to you while also being better written, or at least less obnoxiously written, for others.

Metas are more likely to complete with teamwork.

Fine, you don’t want to make friends.. but why not? It’s so much easier than making friends “IRL” and just as rewarding.

When you meet someone who calls for help on a hero point, and you successfully win it – together – take a second to say hi and add them as a friend. Ask what they’re after next, or point to one that you need done.

For me, the new friends I’ve made in this game are a far greater reward than a random precursor drop ever would be. (no, none for me in all my hours).

Whatever you do, don’t wait for someone to make friends with you first. Put that first foot forward and it will encourage others to do the same.

WoW offers many amenities for that sub cost that GW2 doesn’t. Things like free hair/face changes, 50 character slots on as many different servers as you want. Every single armor/weapon set is released through the game. There are a lot of things offered in sub games that b2p and f2p games don’t offer.

CHERRY PICKING, that’s all this is. Cherry picking, every one is taking something out of context to raise their subjective information. This is Subjective information, this is your opinion on the game, YOUR OPINION! Where are your sources? Link your statistics? You keep throwing out numbers, percentages, and referring to other games. Where? Link an article written by a DEV. Stop cherry picking each other. Show me actual valid written proof of your claims. That making hard core content is what kills a game. Wildstar flopped for a lot of reasons. But of course, you wont list them all, you’ll just cherry pick things to make your argument valid.

Why did Anet make HoT hard….Because we wanted it. The community as a whole wanted it,

To quote you, “Link your statistics.”

and where are my sources? Colin, from Anet when they went to pax!

To quote you, “Show me actual valid written proof of your claims.” Where exactly did Colin say that the whole community wanted harder content? What were his exact words. Where is the supporting documentation to show that he was correct in his representation of what the whole community wanted?

The community requested harder content.

To quote you, “Link your statistics.”

The casuals that claim that they should make content for every one? They did make it for every one,

Physical impossibility. You cannot make something that will suit everyone. Anet knows this, so should everyone else.

every one here complaining the HoT is to hard? Bull crap! If you keep dying, then group up! Oh no! You mean you have to talk to strangers! In an MMO! What will you do! GASP! You have a life out side of the game with real life responsibilities? You cant be asked to actually apply yourself to the game for rewards?

To quote you, “this is your opinion on the game, YOUR OPINION!”

That is utter crap! The term Casual is wrong! Casual means a lot of things, Umbrella term is the phrase. Every one is cherry picking!

Using umbrella terms means that one is not cherry picking. Cherry picking means to latch onto a specific phrase, element, or point while using umbrella terms means one is encompassing a broad scope of elements, perhaps to the exclusion okittennowledging details. Almost antonyms really.

If you don’t like Gw2, here’s some advice

STOP PLAYING IT!

One of the better points to be made in this sort of discussion. Even so it is not necessarily the best advice. Changing what one does not like into something that one does like is a valid approach to life.

Casual: The term or idea of a player that does not play a game for extended period if time:
Casual:The idea that a player enjoys the game, wants to be good at it, and wants to take the time to be good at it, but doesn’t have the time to play as much as they like.
Casual: The idea of a player that wants rewards, wants to feel special, with out actually doing any work.<—— This one applies to most of the people in this thread.
Casual:Plays the game simply because they enjoy it, they don’t freak out or Q.Q when they die, or lose a boss battle. They simply get up, crack a joke and try again.<—-That’s me.

Your definitions of the word seem reasonable to me. Being accepted by both you and I does not make them anything more than opinion though.

There are over 4 million people subscribed to Gw2,

To quote you, “Link your statistics? You keep throwing out numbers…”

I would really love to see evidence to show that:

1) Anet has changed GW2’s business model to include a subscription.
2) That there are over four million active players.*

I expected GW1 with major mmo bling. Ingame VOIP option. A guild interface and bank controls far more advanced than what we got. Configurable UI. Particle sliders. Actual dynamic events rather than infinitely repeatable events. QoL features that are in games released 10+ years ago. I expected the Manifesto to be an actual “thing”.

I didn’t expect the content would be increasingly driven by NES nostalgia. I didn’t expect the story writing to be driven by emulating TV programs, terrible common tropes and social justice warriors.. I did expect the Lore of GW to be respected. I didn’t expect the personal story would be so glaringly bad. I really did not expect the super server merge and loss of all server community. I did not foresee “zerging” would be the preferred play. It’s always been an insult, to me.

I play here when I am taking breaks from GW or EQ2. I will not buy HoT. I do not like platforming, mario or LoZ, so, no point. I wont commit to anymore purchases until they quit floundering around and decide what they want to be.

Haven’t uninstalled cause I love my Norn and the environment is so pretty, when not blocked by a 600 lb winged, glowing GokuCharr or a blinding wall of particle effects. Waiting for a better MMO with better standards of immersion and an actual design destination. Wings.. really. Et Tu, GW2?

You do know that SAB has not been around in about a year right? To say the content is FUELED by NES nostalgia is freakin stupid.

I think he was talking about some of the platforming elements in HoT, not SAB.

As for exaageration in the genre, it’s the rule for a reason. Half the people skip cutscenes and don’t read text. What you see as beating over the head, I see as making accessible to those not paying attention.

If someone is purposefully avoiding something then exaggeration (or whatever other techniques are used) to reduce their ability to do so is not making it accessible to them, its attempting to force it on them. Attempting to force someone to notice something that they are actively avoiding is a pretty solid definition for the phrase, “beating them over the head with it.”

That said, I do not think that what is done in GW2 qualifies as beating us over the head. I don’t think it is done at all well. I do think that there is a lack of balance in this regard. Big deal.

People with gambling addictions condition themselves to avoid temptations until they’re strong enough. It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to addiction-proof the world. It’s the responsibility of the addict and his loved ones to police that behavior.

As for concerned parents. Really? If you have issues with lessons or methods of thought a form of entertainment is instilling in your child, stop allowing them to access that entertainment. That’s your responsibility as a parent, not Arenanet’s responsibility as a video game developer. if you can’t teach a child to gamble responsibly, or simply not to gamble at all, then perhaps you shouldn’t be allowing them access to forms of entertainment that include gambling. Given the global gambling economy in the real world and the ease of access the internet provides to losing real money doing it, I highly reccommend the first two options rather than the last, and counter that allowing them to experience the effects of gambling and basic economics in a virtual space where no real assets are lost may actually be useful in teaching those lessons. Your mileage as a parent may vary, as may your desires for what lessons you teach.

So much this.

What did you guys want guild wars 2 to be?

What met/exceeded my desires:

  • Cooperative feel: no ninja nodes, etc.
  • Fluidity of combat: still the most fluid, despite several emulators since
  • Large world, with lots of nods to GW lore and reminders of the past
  • Dynamic events in the base game are/were a lot of fun
  • A cash store that is not intrusive

What did not meet my expectations

  • Ascended thrown in as a stopgap to try to stall player departure
  • The implementation of the cosmetic endgame, which hinders the idea of developing multiple looks for a character, rather than encouraging it
  • Build depth is almost completely lacking
  • WvW is an imbalanced mess, at least in the tier I play in
  • Just about every decent reward not in FotM (lol at even saying that) is in herd content. While I expected herd play to be in the game, I did not expect it to be virtually the only gameplay that provides virtual rewards.
  • Not being able to see anything in close combat other than a blob of effects, especially not when games put out nearly a decade earlier provided effects sliders

Pretty much this.

Plus more non-trenchcoat options for ranger armor.

HoT seems more a DLC than true Expansion

HoT is more akin to EotN expansion for GW1

Agreed, but Factions and Nightfall were both stand alone campaigns and expansions for GW1. They could be played alone, but also expanded the setting for existing players.

I loved the vibe of my prophecies character becoming this globe-trotting hero. When the locals can’t handle a tough situation they put in a call for the pro from Ascalon.

I remember when the first guild wars Nightfall expansion came out we got a whole new continent to explore and quest (ELONA) which had 4 regions with multiple sub-regions.
We got new PVP environments, (2) new classes to play and race. A true expansion.

For the cost of the vastness of guildwars 2 we bought HoT. Which included one new class, no new race, for PVP there is supposed to be the new Battle of Champion’s Dusk don’t know much about it if that’s live for all to play yet or not.

In guild wars 1 Maguuma was huge with places like bloodstone fen and reed bog, we only got 3 sub-regions in maguuma, are more regions to unlock in soon weeks to come?

I just feel shortchanged

Your memory of GW1 might be a little off.

1) No playable races were added to GW1.

2) Nightfall did not add new PvP (that I recall, perhaps it is my memory that is faulty here?)

Other than that, all I can say is that value is subjective. You might consider HoT a letdown compared to Nightfall while someone else could consider it the better of the two.

Not to this level. 3K complaints in 3 days. But in the grand scheme of things, 3K is still little.

Do you remember the anti-ascended threads from immediately after it was announced?

If the, " two large walls ," had been something particularly challenging rather than just time consuming I might agree with you.

I don’t agree with you, OP. I want my legendaries the moment I buy and log into the game. All of them. I also want to have 999,999 gold on every character. Why bother grinding all that stuff? This isn’t Grind Wars 2… Just give that to us ANET.

There are so many Drama Queens of Hyperbole running around today…

It’s true though. If they complain about 10 hours of grind for those hero points, how long before they complain about not having a ascended item within the 3rd week of playing?? How long before they start complaining about not having a legendary precursor for 20 pristine fractal relics?

I mean seriously, complaining about those hero points are like buying the game and saying “hmm why am I not lvl 80 yet? it’s been a good 12 seconds.”

Sad reality is that if ANET does cater to every whim of the vocal minority, the game might really get nerfed a whole lot more.

If all one has are slippery slope arguments its a pretty solid indication that one’s position might be on shaky ground.

People have complained about not having ascended immediately since its inception. People have complained about the difficulty of getting precursors since launch.

Etc.

Its been over three years….hasn’t happened yet.

And now arenanet took away the pride of their achievment.

“I have logged into the game more than some other people over the last few days,” isn’t really much of an achievement is it ?

Hero points.

If the time was wasted then you were not enjoying yourself. If you were playing a game but not enjoying yourself then you were doing it wrong.

Umm….learn to play?

I don’t mean that in a manner that denigrates your skill in GW2. Rather, I am trying to point out that play is supposed to be fun and fun is not a waste of time.

But I guess my opinion on what I find fun in the game isn’t valid.

There is nothing stopping you from not playing an elite spekittenil you have earned 400HP.

And no one is stopping you from expressing your opinion. You brought it to a public forum and people expressed countering opinions.
