the idea for the combat is good.
but the camera is weird.
as an example, dont you feel that in skyrim the camera is more “stable” ?
in gw2 it moves and zoom and what not…
that makes the gameplay messy for me, and i have some difficulty enjoying the dungeons or cloistered fights fully because of that.
the actual dodge/move and hitbox are ok with me.
but lets say i place the camera on an enemy and move back then all of a sudden camera zoom over my shoulder, the enemy isnt in sight anymore and i get hit by i dont know.
gw2 as it is wont last “that long”.
everybody knows that, and im just level 56.
Apparently, I missed the memo. In fact, I’d say everyone I played with seems to have missed it.
Sure, they complain about x or y sometimes and so do I, but I and they still enjoy and play the game. So, I really don’t see where you got the impression “this won’t last long”.
The game has a few faults, noone is denying that, but since WoW, it’s been clearly heaps and bounds ahead of anything else released. Then again Rift and Secret World were kind of fun, but still below GW2 in my opinion.
true.
i think corrections are possible.
mainly, as it is now “in my opinion”;
-camera is dfficult to nail. especially in dungeons, when you start going near walls or cloistered area etc. the camera zoom in-out so badly, making it almost impossible to control your moves.
-pvp with pugs; defend the spot type of game isnt intuitive.
it requires more communication.
but gw2 being fast and furious, nobody talks.
i think a simple 5vs5 or catch the flag or whatelse could be better.
as it is now “sometimes i win, sometimes i lose” i dont feel my efforts have an impact on the result, thus i have a hard time getting into it.
maybe its just me.
especially the last paragraph.
there is no tank in gw2, there are “baits”.
O really want to know how the Priest of Balthazar telegraphs his instant kill attack (because thanks to ANets awesome lag reducing mechanicy I don’t seven see his character model).
The problem is that its not that bosses have special instant kill abilities which are telegraphed (or rather they have them in addition), but that their normal, non telegraphed attacks deal so much damage to instantly kill most characters (I am not talking about glass cannons but characters who simply do not spend every available point in defense).
And sadly the boss design is simply boring. Most of the time ANet simply took a normal mob, multiply HP and damage by 10 and calls it a boss. Fighting them is boring and a tank&spank. Only that without the “holy trinity” the tank is whoever the strange mob AI focuses on. And to tank a mob means running around in circles to not get hit while everyone else takes free shots at the enemy.
thats superbly well said.
D) bad camera angle
E) too much visual fx mess
its often preferable to stay still an hit the right combination of power to neutrailize the beast and dmg it. a least with a guardian.
if you are overwhelmed, switch to kiting and be patient… or pray of you are melee.
even in pvp.
lets go full on arena.
why those defend the points blabla? its so not pug friendly.
so unless youre hardcore player in a team you dont feel like you male any difference in pvp.
sometimes you win sometimes you dont…
its a bit sad. its missing the feeling of well deserved victory.
i find overall the game is often missing that feeling.
but, it does a GREAT job at being an explore/epic pve game.
gameplay aside, the world is AMAZING.
i feel the game is slowing down.
and the forums too.
im not even lvl 80 yet…
its such a nice world… i hope they can save the gameplay.
because the gameplay is not that precise.
being messy, putting too much emphasis on skill would be dangerous.
it is better that the difficulty is “managing your ressources over time” instead of tactical responsiveness and strategy/tactic, that would work better on a cleaner gameplay.
spam right!
thats how you win it!
im on business trip oct 24 to nov 7.
no halloween gw2 for me…
the teaser video isnt as strong as the concept art.
still, i ll probably only be able to do the first act.
sux.
@ming
that was really well explained.
some folks really do play beyond what health dept is advising.
i have 115h since 1 week after launch.
thats about 15-20h a week..
im level 55.
no wvwvw,
barely no pvp.
only 1 dungeon.
this game for me is going to be very long.
i might actually never see the end.
i think some of the freak gamers will change game, and some will stay.
but definitely GW2s future isnt in the hand of these peeps.
nicely said Raf.
problem is; gear that isnt soulbound can be grinded by the warrior for lets say, the ele?
i am not masochist enough to play that way, but a lot of blizzard type players are.
blacklights post about putting more “cool rare drops” is a good one imo.
i think the free to play format kind of made the designer put a lot of content out of loot possibility and thats a shame.
keys for chest, gems, transmute stone, repair can, town cloths..
loot would be spicier with all these sprinkled in in light dose.
alcopaul, you produce garments?
blacklight;
simply put, if we go with the subject of the thread, you deinitely dont go with the flow.
you are slightly on the powergamer side, choosing the best farming build even if you dont like the mechanics, and grinding your way to a “gear” that will give you what exactly? not much.
imo, you should check out infinite easy mode grind games that this huge studio does, theres a game with panda and one with 4 acts and infinite better loot !
your call.
imo, as it is now the game is really fun!
pve and pvp and wvw.
but,
the gameplay…
it is a bit messy.
it really is.
visual effect maelstrom, camera position, clipping, no collision between characters etc
it doesnt really disturb me most of the time, but for an esport… that is going to be a big turn off probably.
basically all we need is features to facilitate team play.
i find everything comes down to shouting in map or guild channel, and my little finger is telling me that it isnt the way it should be.
we have to see games at the esport level, between 2 teams coordinating on teamspeak battling out.
if the presentation and camera shots are cool for the viewers, it can be nice.
the game actually requires a lot of skill..
im curious to see 2 super good players dueling.. probably will be a long fight!
blacklight, seriously, you dont really “go with the flow” if you feel like everybody except the 1 or 2 very good builds are not worth playing.
the balance is actually quite solid for a two months old game.
anyway, yeah, you have to play dfferently in pvp and pve.
these are not the same game.
there is no reason to rush pve more than you would a single player game.
i dont get all the whining.
^ interesting
thats exactly how i feel people are on the forum!
“too easy, too hard” never happy.
its weird.
“support” for 90% of the time and drop an aoe bomb once it a while.
what else do you want? be a u.n. blue helmet?
gosh.
there is as many builds as weapon set combination.
add to that the traits and gears.
thats more than enough for release.
you probably havent mastered only one yet.
people are complaining for whatever reason.
as a guardian, if i want to stay alive when the S hit the fan,
i have to use my 5 weapon skills, swap weapon for 5 more, and my utilities and use my virtue (f1 and f3 especially) on time to block attacks.
seriously, what do people want? to play with their toes too?
i cant believe they go thru dungeon by doing the same combos over and over.
totally trolling.
do a dungeon run with newbs and be a hero
its fine, not evetybody need heavy armor.
its more a question of the style you like, and hopefully there is at least 1 among the 8 profession.
i like mesmer in robe with 2h sword.
i dont think the combats are good enough for this game to grow.
eventually, people will reach cap, and eventually.. pvp, wvwvw , dungeon is your endgame.
and combat, especially in dungeon or world event, are “meh” (each for different reason).
I’m so tired of hearing how hard these dungeons are as me and my friend clear all 3 wings night after night on multiple dungeons.
They are easier now thought that we’re all in full exotics. I guess we must be playing a different game then the rest of you who keep complaining.
I’m all down for balancing and tuning, bug fixes but to just outright say they’re too hard is simply wrong.
We have them on farm, it took practice and thought. Try it.
exacty what im saying.
dungeons open up before you reach 80.. but really? not possible unless your team is full of 80.
story mode should be a lot easier.
explore mode, as hard as they want.
story mode dungeon should be doable by a group around the required level.
ex; 40-45 for CM.
as it is now its totally an unneeded diff spike.
each pull is a pain for lower level, not super geared toons.
the levelling experience, aside from world zerging the events, and the dungeons, is amazing.
very amazing.
its on big groups that it starts to get messy, cant see a thing etc.
man, i think some boss i didnt even see their graphic because there was more than 10 players casting all kind of flashy stuff on repetion.
is it because there is no content? or is it because gameplay is lacking fun ?
personally i dont mind the playable characters powers/skills/traits.
my problem is with the mobs in dungeons.
and world/dynamic events beasties eating the dust to a swarm of players (and maybe youll die if youre melee and the sheet amount of fireworks is blinding you).
GW2 excels in so many areas, skills/traits unfortunately isn’t one.
I’m sure its someones kind of fun, but not mine, when the carrot on the stick is to play for fun, it’s hard to log in when the fundamental mechanic of an MMO (combat) isn’t fun.
thats my main issue too.
i cannot pinpoint exactly “why”, but combats are not fun.
especially combats in big events (too many people/fireworks) or dungeons (mobs are hp tanks, im feeling powerless when i hit a “sparatist thief” and he barely take dmg from my most powerful ability.
it puts the “L” in “loser”.
just doesnt feel right.
in solo questing they come out as cool.
diablo 3 killed wow
skill in gw2 dungeon are secondary to knowledge.
yeah it helps to know the golf course, bit many factor can still change the outcome.
a dungeon is more like doing one of those “book that you are the hero”.
oops, wrong choice of page, im dead.
next time take the other page
game is apocalyptic man!
its a firework of unknown boons and conditions, a maelstrom of unidentified combo fields, a tornado hitting a million hp mob.
swing away! and hope for the best.
endgame are overrated.
there is no endgame in Dota or Nhl 13.
if the game can really “show” the players that “skills” matter, then they dont need what you call an endgame.
problem is, gw2 doesnt do a great job at making you feel like your “playing skill” improve.
hehe, game is great aside from dungeons for me.
i just think the “dumb mobs with thousand of hps” idea wasnt the way to do it.
yeah, but you dont know exactly where hes going to hit the ball, and at what speed, and with what effect.
its more a reaction/coordination thing.
but anyway, i fail at dungeons so i shouldt talk about them.
i dont like them, but you do.
shake hands
Hrmm I never really thought of it that way Avatar but I guess you are right. There really is no skill in anything whatsoever, it’s just varying degrees of knowledge. There is no skilled musicians, there are musicians with more knowledge of their instrument and song composing. There is no skilled quarterbacks, they just possess more knowledge of how the players will move on the field. There is no skilled race car drivers, they just possess the knowledge to know when to brake on what turns.
It’s a very interesting concept but when you really think about it there’s no such thing as skill. Even an artist just possesses more knowledge of how to combine colors and images to be pleasing to the eye.
cool points.
but i meant; its not like an artist with knowledge of colors… that is like you knowing your toon abilities.
its more like playing hide and seek knowing where the other is hiding.
i know knowledge is important, even in tennis, but it comes down to skill at some point.
and not necessarly just about knowing exactly what is going to happen to survive it.
youll be ok once you know the dungeons by heart.
its not skill, its knowledge.
its about “knowing” the dungeon, more than actual skills ?
wipe until you know it by heart, like old school video gaming !
dungeon design need a solid improvement.
in randomness of mobs, in mobs design (drop that huge health pool amd make them also attack and back off like players, something like AI controlled players instead of op stats zombies).
right now, it just feels wrong, most of the time unless its a sneaky strategy, you dont know how come you won or lost.
its hard to feel rewarded for your playigng skill when they actualy barely matter.
game is obviously not for everybody.
gameplay is too hectic for any kind of decent teamwork.
and the mobs having that much hps.
i mean “ok ill immobilize one of the 5 mobs for 3 seconds”; actually, doesnt mean much…
in pvp you feel the impact of your powers, not in dungeons.
maybe mobs should be build like players? lower hp but healing/block mechanics? something akin to “ai controlled players”.
otherwise its a bit, just, not that fun.
dungeons are the part of this game i lime the less.
camera is bad, especially inside, and when we win a fight we usually dont know what we did right.
same thing as when we lose a fight.
its just a big firework and sometimes you get lucky.
(yeah, with a full organized/built team you will finish them, for sure)
i dont feel the strategy at all.
ok as a guardian i throw buffs here and there, but im not quite sure whats happening most of the time, i have thousand buffs/conditions on and i hope for the best.
D3 is the total abobination of that concept.
i know a guy who is clocking 1000h since release.
that means how many runs of act 3 ? to “hope” for a drop.
thats almost sick…
and anet developpers are in over their head
that project was too big. programing is not tight yet (1 problem solved, 2 new problems arise) and bots, and the design team need to understand that a lot of their fan base are no lifers.
but i kind of believe in them.
im quite sure that gw2 will have an epic journey.
but pushing it too fast too soon by playing excessively is breaking it a bit.
i dont think the game is loosing its appeal.
i think the major flaws of the game are not so hard to correct.
it’s definitely a game for explorers and action rpg.
the world is nice and its simply fun to wander around.
but some game mechanics dont make sense.
killing a champion troll get 1 leather. thats all.
anyway. levelling in this game is amazing. and im quite sure that even if im “done” after finishing my perso story, it would rank high on my best game chart.
and killing a champion to get 1pc of rawhide leather.
well, random is random.
ok.
gw2 MAIN appeal is the super majestic work of their artists/animators/sound guys.
as a game itself, combat is well done but the “big” picture need some adjustment.
to me its weird that anet designers didnt catch those problems. (and im not talking about minor bugs!)
all in all… in goes back tonthe dreaded word; endgame
gw2 is having an issue there, but we need to ask ourselves; is an endgame “required” ?
blizzard D3 couldnt nail it… and its blizzard “the creators of endgame”.
there is a lot of things to balance in this game.
its true.
but its still a kitten amazing game.
as a standalone b2p its 200h of fun, and thats if you dont try pvp/wvwvvw much.
eventually, itll be better.
cant believe there is that many players in Orr yet.
definitely anet underestimated the hardcore nolifers sheet numbers.
