Learn to play.
No, seriously. I’m not joking or being mean.
From your post I can tell that you’re still a newbie to this game.
Keep practising, watch a guide, ask your questions and you’ll get better eventually.
I’m sick of people complaining about their pet.
If you don’t want a pet-class, you don’t want Ranger. It’s as simple as that.
So I tried making a debuffer/condition damage Necromancer build.
I know weakness isn’t really strong against the current condition damage meta, but Necromancer is already pretty strong against condition damage enemies, because of their condition cleanses and transfers.
This is just an experiment after all.

In theory, I can have permanent weakness on an enemy and a lot of chilling. (I was thinking of changing staff to focus off hand, but Staff is generally a safe option, I’d say.)
What would you tweak/change?
So I really like my Mesmer and I have some ideas of abilities I would like to see introduced in the future.
- Disguise yourself as your target (the way Countess Anise is able to do)
- Longer and more powerful stealth abilities (3 seconds is not enough for a master of illusion and deception)
- More illusions up at a time (I’ve seen Countess Anise with around 20-30 illusions active at the same time, why can a level 80 Mesmer only have 3?) – I think even bringing up 10 clones with no combat abilities that just run away from the target giving you cover to run without your opponent knowing which Mesmer to target in a “run away” situation.
- Can we get blink to not need a direct path? It would be so much more fun if we could teleport up ledges across jumps etc especially considering how my mentor in Durmand Priory is always teleporting all over the place during the puzzles.
- Transform myself into a tree or some other random object so I can ambush people, maybe have some clones/phantasms as trees too? Just for fun.
I think these abilities would just make the class more immerse and fun to play as a master of illusions and deception.
1- I would actually like that, but I seriously doubt it will have any good use whatsoever.
2- You’re a master of deception, not invisibility. Deception means clones, decoys, blinks, counters and short durations of stealth. I would certainly not like my mesmer to become a bad thief copy. (also, you can have up to 6 seconds of stealth with one skill. I’d say that’s good enough)
3- Hah, you saw Countess Anise do it and you suddenly think you should too? Maybe my Necromancer should be able to summon an army of Flesh Golems too, then? Hilarious.
4- Mesmer is already the only profession to be able to ignore gaps and ledges with the use of Portal. Now you want that with your blink too? And moreover, you want it because you saw a NPC do it? Yeah, next.
5- I’m sure any enemy who saw a random tree somewhere it’s not supposed to be would know it’s a Mesmer.
Maybe I wasn’t clear:
I’m talking about the addition of combo finishers without nerfing/changing the skills.
I don’t see how adding finishers would make them excessively stronger, especially considering that there’s really no explanation for their absence. (Maybe with the exception of Enfeeble, due to it being instacast on a very short cooldown with the right trait setup. Maybe only add it to the Weapon skill, if possible?)
Also, I don’t see how Ghastly Claws would fit as a whirl finisher. And even if it did, I think it’s already a decent skill and clearly not intended for any utility purposes.
Spoj’s build. It has the same aoe capabilities or even better with the 20/25/0/0/25 variant, excluding the piercing life blast, but you don’t need it in the open world and you will have 4 team mates in dungeons to cleave trash mobs down.
edit: I personally prefer the 30/25/0/0/15 variant, i’m not a fan of DS flashing.
Which part of it is the good AoE, exactly?
I prefer not to think in the way “Oh, I’ve got my teammates for that so I shouldn’t care about it”.
So I want to use a power build for my Necromancer, but I can’t decide between Spoj’s stickied build or Nemesis’ glasscannon with Deathly Perception.
I’m planning to use it for PvE open world stuff and dungeons.
Basically, I like the one with Deathly perception because it has great AoE damage, which is probably lacking from Spoj’s build (since dagger doesn’t cleave for god knows what reason).
On the other hand, according to Spoj, Deathly Perception isn’t necessary, but he’s referring to situations with optimized parties and conditions.
What do you recommend?
GRENADES ALL THE WAY
*runs away *
Or we could make our own lfgs which solve every complaint about skipping/exploiting/“I play how I want”. But that would be too easy.
I don’t see how making your own LFGs stops people from seeing you and saying “Ew, don’t want that in MY group”. But sure, if it does, go ahead. My bad for trying to make people ENJOY their GAME.
By your examples, I’m assuming you mean a defensive mechanic.
They actually have many defensive skills, but it’s true that they don’t have a defensive mechanic that is unique to them.
What they do have is versatility, though. And I like that.It doesn’t have to be a defensive mechanic but it wouldn’t hurt either. As far as versatility goes I don’t see it. They are versatile at doing everything worse than another classs can. Right now ele is like necro where they basically have to stand and fight against whoever engages with them. Unlike the necro though they only have 1 very small health pool.
As far as I know, Elementalists have the highest DPS potential among other classes, can stack might exceptionally well, have FGS (that’s basically a different category on its own, lol) but can also sacrifice damage to bring lots of healing and survivability, being seen commonly on D/D builds.
They can be very mobile with D/D, or stand far off in the distance and nuke everything with Staff, or get Scepter and put out bigger burst than your average thief.
I’d say FGS could be more useful than Reaper of Grenth, that #2 has some ridiculous burning.
It looks like you’ve made a condition build that relies heavily on DS.
But, at the same time, you’re trying to invest in power as well? Why?
I’d say it’s a very good weapon for utility, but not very good for damage.
I personally use it in PvP fo my condition Mesmer. It’s great for being annoying and playing defensively. If you want a fight to drag on, go for Staff. If I had to pick a way to buff it, I’d say buff the auto-attack’s conditions.
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYz9RbHHE4w
Here’s a video of a dude using the Staff effectively. Though he’s using what is apparently a bug with Phase Retreat.Heh, did you read the title of that vid? Helseth saying Mesmer is not viable. You’re right though that he made good use of the staff, but on review you’ve got to ask for what? All it amounted to was a short range blink on a short cooldown, which he used to maneuver around the terrain. Expertly it should be said, but otherwise…
Yeah, I think he was just joking with that title.
I agree that he didn’t accomplish much in that video, other than trolling his enemies, but it’s a good example of the possibilities of a staff. It clearly shows the defensive capabilities it has, as I pointed out in my first post.
Obviously, I’m not recommending that you get a staff and start trolling your enemies hoping you’ll win, but if you master it you can definitely improve your gameplay.
Do you really like Rangers? Do you get annoyed when people don’t want you in LFG? I feel for you.
Rangers have good DPS, but they don’t seem to fit in the meta as well as other classes, especially if the player is mediocre.
So here’s my advice:
Find a nice guild that’s not aiming for Tyria domination, make friends, play dungeons without stacking tactics and exploiting dumb boss AI and have FUN.
Having fun? PLAYING DUNGEONS? Ridiculous, I KNOW.
P.S. Same goes for any class/spec in the same situation.
yep, interrupt that hs through BP and you cost the thief 9 initiative… no cooldown though.
This is false, the 9 seconds of initiative lost is a cooldown! That 9 initiative takes 9 seconds to regenerate passively, making it a 9 second cooldown.
This really isn’t hard to understand people.
Cooldown =/= resource

If you’re trying to counter a counter build, you’re gonna have a bad time.
I’m sure you can use it if you’re going for a debuffer of some kind, but if you’re going for more damage, poison is not the right way.
By your examples, I’m assuming you mean a defensive mechanic.
They actually have many defensive skills, but it’s true that they don’t have a defensive mechanic that is unique to them.
What they do have is versatility, though. And I like that.
I think we really desperately need some combo finishers. The only weapon skill finishers we have right now are the Staff auto-attack and the Putrid mark. Both are fairly useless in that role.
Maybe Necros can’t utilize finishers as well as other classes, due to the lack of variety in their own combo fields, but it would make them more useful in teamplay.
My suggestions for blast finishers are:
- Enfeebling blood (dagger 5) (blast)
- Unholy Feast (axe 3) (blast)
- Deathly Swarm (dagger 4) (projectile)
- Life Blast (Death shroud 1) (projectile 20% chance)
Tell me what you think.
There is so much fail here I cannot tell if this is unbelievably dumb or an epic troll.
Seconded. I’m speechless
This seems to happen a lot more in dungeons and only when playing GW2 (haven’t tried with many other games though)
So, when I’m playing, either of four things happen:
1) GW2 crashes and shows an error report.
2) I get a blue screen and my PC resets.
3) GW2 freezes and I can terminate the process with CTRL + Alt + Del
4) My PC freezes entirely and I’m forced to reset it.
What could the issue be? Anyone had this problem before?
How is a non-stealth weapon set “low risk” for a thief?
It is Low risk because the evade it produces. S/P is High reward/Low risk set. If the Thief was full beserker armor and orbs, etc and S/P. The Sword and Pistol is High reward/ low risk, but the build itself is High reward/High Risk.
Still, it’s easy to dodge and quite predictable. Eventually you’ll stop evading and without stealth you’ll get wrecked immediately by any decent player.
Unless you’re referring to PvE, in which case I don’t know why we’re even having this conversation.
I’m not very experienced with Guardians, but one thing I’d like is shorter cooldown or longer duration on their Tome elite skills.
I love it.
The Skyhammer is a brilliant addition which keeps you on our toes at all time.
The throwing-out-of-map part is also absolutely hilarious and fun, whether you’re the one knocking someone out or the other way around. One of my favorite maps, really.
Enjoy your warrior
Not even close
Stealth and evades are pretty much the only defensive mechanics a thief has.
If you look at some youtube videos (Yishis’ outnumbered fights for example), you can see that the thief is by no means invincible while in stealth. Yishis in particular can land backstabs on stealthed enemies like it’s nothing, really.
You can get better with experience. You’ll eventually find all sorts of ways to attack thieves in stealth. If you tell me what class and build you’re using, I can probably tell you a few.
I like the idea. It would encourage thieves to be a bit more skillful with their engages and escapes and it would make S/P a counter to the stealth counter. :P
This is just an assumption, since I don’t know the sizes of PvP maps, but maybe they wanted to make the portal useable at almost any distance in PvP.
Since portals are much more useful for WvW zergs, it’s only logical that they decided to have it a bit lower there.
Mesmers are absolutely terrible at levelling and can get very boring when fighting trash mobs all the time.
When you’re 80, though, you can get all the fun traits and play the fun content.
I have played all classes and Mesmer is definitely one of the most fun to play for me.
Yes, it would. There has to be a risk in changing your current attunement, just like there’s a risk in changing your current weapon set in other classes.
If you get in a tough spot and have to switch to earth or water, it wouldn’t be fair to other classes if you could just instantly switch to fire and have high DPS again.
Did you miss the part of the entire thief class design where they don’t have weapon skill cooldowns?
I love it.
The Skyhammer is a brilliant addition which keeps you on our toes at all time.
The throwing-out-of-map part is also absolutely hilarious and fun, whether you’re the one knocking someone out or the other way around.
One of my favorite maps, really.
I don’t think the DPS difference is that high if you go S/P. The big difference is that you can’t give out fury, might and banners for your team. However, I’d say you make up for that with lots of blinds and stealthing.
How is a non-stealth weapon set “low risk” for a thief?
Awful story-wise, awful gameplay-wise, awful aesthetic-wise and pretty random as well.
I bet it won’t be just a dream for long.
I’m not even mad, that’s amazing
Axel i have to disagree with you. Mesmers have an exellent cond management but 90% prefer to use other skills instead of cond removals.
Mendels purity if you use mantra of recovery as a heal removes 2+2 cond instantly or 2 every time with any other healing skill. Mantra of resolve removes another 4 instantly. Null field.
I always run mantra of resolve. Usually it is enough in 1v1 fights with almost every cond build. So far i have an issue only with good cond engis. They can melt me in seconds. Necros not so much and cond thieves are my favored type to fight. Fast glass cannons are much worst.
I was referring to the lack of condition cleanse in weapon skills.
Of course you should take a condition cleanse in your utilities, but that doesn’t suddenly make you a counter to condition Necromancers. It will help you deal with them, but any decent Necromancer will let the fight drag on till you can’t take it any more.
Just give greatsword to necromancer so i can use twilight.
That’s like giving necro a hammer. It just doesn’t work.
COUGH ARCHDIVINER COUGH
First of all, I would realy appreciate it, if finanly mesmer gets a mantra which al least has a TYPE.
Do you mean an ELITE with a type?
If you’re referring to the leaked elites from a while ago, I’m pretty sure those were confirmed to be fake.
I like your idea of a Mantra Elite, but I’d like something more… chaotic for a Mesmer.
I have the feeling that mws doesn’t count for the combo. Everytime i try this with, or without mws, and I move my mouse over the stealth icon, it says 2 secsonds. Which is between 2 and 3.
If we assume, that each hs gives you 3 seconds of stealth, and you regenerate 3 initiative in 3 seconds, you came out of stealth with the same amount of initiative, no matter how often you jumped through the field.
The ratio stealth to unstealth time changes of course.
It doesn’t. MWS only increases the duration of stealth skills, like Hide in Shadows or Cloak & Dagger
For D/P I generally go more into shadow arts for the extra second into stealth and less into power traits. And as for the number of Heart Seekers I just do it on feel, it can range from one to three depending on the situation really. Just mess around with it!
Thanks for the reply.
I just changed to a 0/30/30/10/0 trait line to get the trait you mentioned, actually.
I guess I’ll get used to it eventually and do it instinctively as well.
Ever since I started playing thief, I’ve only liked D/D and S/D, but I felt like trying D/P recently.
Probably picked a bad time, because of that change to Infusion of Shadow, but w/e.
I switched to a more glasscannon-y build, because from what I’ve seen, that’s what people generally go for with D/P.
I can’t seem to get used to stealthing, however. How many times do I heartseeker in the smoke field for the best initiative/stealth combination?
My traits are 30/30/10/0/0.
Here’s my advice:
Instead of pretending to know everything about both classes and blaming the game because you’re losing to something, maybe actually learn to play better and overcome the difficulties with your own abilities. In general, thieves usually counter mesmers. That’s just the way it is. That doesn’t make it unfair. Mesmers usually counter other classes.
Could you tell me what classes mesmers counter exactly because I can’t seem to find any. You could say condimancer but that’s literally one class spec amongst many and it’s not even that prevalent in tpvp/wvw. You could say we do well against other classes but I don’t see how we counter anything at all in pvps current state.
Also thieves counter almost all glass cannon specs. That’s what makes it unfair.
Conditionmancer is actually pretty decent against mesmers, because of their lack of condition cleanse.
I can tell you a few classes I find Mesmers are strong against, but it also greatly depends on your build and the opponent’s build.
Tell me what kind of build you’re using and I’ll try to describe what enemies you’re strong against.
Also, no they don’t.
Scepter is not, I repeat NOT a good PvE weapon. It is clearly intended for WvW/PvP and I can assure you it’s pretty decent there.
I’m sorry, but from your post it is pretty obvious that you don’t really know what you’re talking about.
I agree, but REALLY NOW, you can’t expect a Legendary off-hand weapon to be all that amazing, besides the aura and the particles.
I don’t know about levelling guides, but you can use intothemists.com when you’re 80.
