To me the guildhall would be really nice, and I’d like to have it, but there are so many other things, guild wise, that are more important to me. Cross-guild chat or alliances, guild tools like guild MotD displaying in guild chat when players log on and off, guild mail, messages that display in guild chat telling me when players log in or out, being able to queue more upgrade items at a time… This is the meat of what is needed for guilds — halls are just the gravy.

But if you’re making 5,000 salvages a week, every week, then the initial risk might be worthwhile. All future salvages would be at a savings of 29c per salvage, week after week. Plus, the tester would be contributing to the storehouse of knowledge and — should the theory that ecto is outside the realm of “rarer” materials and is indeed a special crafting material — allowing less money to go to the salvage kit gold sink and so having more money available in the economy that the smart trader can get into his own pockets….

Yes, I’m reaching, I know. But I’d really love to know the answer to this question, and I don’t have the means to do testing myself.

Have you ever considered using a Journyman’s kit instead of a Master’s to test the concept? I don’t salvage 1,000 items at a time, but it would seem that the question could be answered by stepping down the chain instead of up to the Black Lion kit, if someone were willing to risk the ROI that would come if it turns out to be that the kit actually does affect the ecto output. People like me don’t have the money to take the risk in testing, but perhaps some of the major traders would be willing, since in the long term using green or even blue kits would be far more economical than using master’s.

For any of you that don’t already know it Spill the Blood bills themselves as the game’s best secondary guild — you’re welcome to keep your PvE guild for dungeons, fractals, shooting dragons, etc. and still join StB for the times you want to kill other players. It’s a nice set up and, since you can sPvP cross-server, you don’t even have to worry about changing worlds.

As the guild leader of a PvE guild it’s nice to have somewhere to point my members that want to PvP. They’re good guys, and very noob friendly.

Hi Mike,

One of the really nice things about GW2 is that you can join an sPvP team across servers. You can only WvW for your own server, but that is the only limitation you can join parties, complete dungeons, participate in guild chat and do tournament PvP all from different servers.

My advice would be to find a social guild that you enjoy playing with and go to the server that they call home; then if you choose to join a second PvP guild you’ll be able to play with them no matter their server base.

Check out the Guilds section of the forums and work from there.

You have no problem with the choice to make this content using a format that wouldn’t allow groups when the systems exist that DO allow groups? You have no problem with Fractals being built using a system that doesn’t allow reconnection when systems exist that DO allow reconnections? You have no problem with the way that fractals and ascended gear have been introduced, and the splintering of the playing communities that comes with that? Those things are design issues. I’m not even talking about the implementation of the instances, I’m talking about the decisions being made about what infrastructure to use to create the instances. Choosing which system to use and how to go about getting it into the hands of the players. And right now this company is not good at it.

It’s like hiring a construction company to put a new bathroom in your house and the foreman says, “Hey, we’re installing new content at the back of this house and we need to pump water there to make it work. Let’s use the ceiling A/C and heating ducts. Those are already in place, and it’ll make our job easy.”

Looking at the recent design decisions I don’t understand the choices that they’ve made at all.

Toypocalypse (Can't join as a party)

in Wintersday

Posted by: Aye.8392

Aye.8392

It does matter. It is one event. Not fifty. It’s not a requirement as far as character progression. There’s no noteworthy reward. As far as never being added, I disagree.

I suspect that this was added in this way for the casuals who returned to the game for the holidays and to see what’s what. So, in a way, it’s to help those without a guild, group, or friends who aren’t playing the game with them.

Yes, you can voice your disappointment. But, please understand just because you dislike something, doesn’t mean it’s game-breaking or a tragedy because it was added.

I know quite a few casuals who are grateful they didn’t have to beg for a group before trying this. And, if this lasts a week or so, the chances of getting group thins quite a bit.

That’s probably another reason for this.

There are PvP systems in the game that allow for a partial group to be finished with randoms. What they have done with Toypocalypse is display incredibly poor and short-sighted game design. Since it is their business to design games this is a rather serious issue. It calls into question the company’s ability to make core decisions such as which system to use to create new content. That’s a pretty basic concept. It isn’t just about one instance in one event — it’s about competency in game design.

Having played Guild Wars 1 I would have sworn that A-Net was one of the best game designers in the world, but this company, as it exists now, isn’t very good at what they do.

Like Snowball Mayhem and the Bell Choior, the Toypocalypse is an activity. They are using the same systems, and these systems do not permit joining by party. Unfortunately due to technical limitations and time constraints before the holidays, we cannot change it. We understand that this is not ideal for people who wish to play in the same party and who are finding it difficult in random groups. We will be adjusting the “Toypocalypse Cancelled” achievement so that you will need to keep only one gift dolyak alive. We do not have an ETA on when this change will be live. Thank you for your feedback. We have been listening, and we will take your comments on board for future game updates.

I can’t imagine that it is a surprise to the design team that people are unhappy with this choice of systems. So much for Toypocalypse.

@ThuGaNoMiX Source or your argument is invalid

The source is Mike O’Brien in the same AMA that has already been linked. Believe me, I hate it and would love to see them not fall into this trap (more accurately push ME into this trap), but the head of A-Net has already said they will do it in an expansion.

I would love to see enough player response to change their minds, but there are so many people who don’t understand. They believe that they like leveling simply because they enjoyed travelling through the whole of the world. They don’t understand that the whole of the world really can be endgame content. It played out that way very, very well in GW1, but it hasn’t played out that way here.

Mike O’Brien

[–]Mike-OBrien-ArenaNet 130 points 19 days ago
Hi! I’ll respond to the top part since it’s a quote from me.
Obviously the key phrase I’m going to point you to in that quote is, “if someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it”. That really is the litmus test we’ve used. That’s why, at ship, we gave better stats to exotic gear and didn’t give better stats to legendary gear.
More generally, I hope we’ve been clear that GW2 is not a game with virtually no stat progression in it like GW1 was. That’s why GW2 shipped with a higher level cap, and with a hard separation between PvE and PvP. In GW1 we never advanced the level cap through four campaigns/expansions. The game design didn’t allow for it. But GW2 was designed without those restrictions, and we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.
That’s why we’ve always said that GW2 rewards players through both progression and collection, whereas GW1 primarily rewarded through collection. Presumably players aren’t shocked that GW2 rewards through progression, since it has a level 80 cap.
I wonder if the core sentiment is more this: It’s only been two-and-a-half months! We don’t even all have exotics yet, and already you’re introducing another tier. Is this the start of a power progression curve that I’ll never be able to keep up with?
I certainly appreciate that worry. I myself don’t want a constant struggle, as exists in some other games, to keep my equipment viable.
Then we’re left with a balancing act. Some progression is ok, but pushing players onto gear treadmill isn’t ok and isn’t what the game is about.
So I would ask you to judge us by details, and not by making slippery-slope arguments. We introduced a ton of new content in November, and the sum total of new progression rewards we added to go with it provided a 5-10% stat increase in 2 of 12 slots. I hope you’ll agree that that kind of very shallow and gradual progression does not force people onto a gear treadmill.
I think it’s important for GW2 to be able to have this kind of gradual progression. Of course we made some mistakes with the way we introduced ascended gear. (See ChrisW’s answers for details.) But those are addressable issues. I don’t think they invalidate the fundamental concept that GW2 can have gradual stat progression without being a gear treadmill game.

Just another LFGuild post any NA server

Aye.8392

Hey Manga,

I’m the leader of Alchemy Incorporated, a guild on the Sorrows Furnace server. We’re a social guild, with our strongest emphasis on forming friendships and having fun, but we’re also pretty serious about being good at what we do, and what we do is play GW2. I am very happy with where our guild is right now, so I haven’t been recruiting at all, but your post is one that I’m going to respond to…

Right now our roster is 135 people strong with 25-50 concurrent players. We usually have 2 or 3 dungeon groups forming nightly, more on the weekends, and we do fractals fairly consistently. Right now some of our members are trying to learn dungeon speed clears. First and foremost though, it’s a fun group

Now I get to why I’m making this exception for you… We’re trying to learn to be more effective in WvW. Our server is in the bottom third and our guild is only active in WvW for one or two nights a week. I’d like to increase that, and to increase our effectiveness when we do play. I want to learn how the big boys do it, and how to make a difference without only running with the zerg. So, I think you could be a huge benefit to us in that respect.

If you’re interested our old recruitment thread is here:

Do longtime players get free items too? (Wizard Hat; Merged)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Aye.8392

Aye.8392

This is for new accounts.

Don’t forget, those who purchased previously had other opportunities: Beta access, Head-start access, digital items, the post-trial offer, event participation, etc. With each promotion there are different incentives.

I’m usually not one to complain but I think it’s important to note that this is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen from a company. I’m actually in disbelief. I don’t care much for novelty items but this is a total slap in the face to anyone who does (and has been supporting the game since launch).

Basically you’re rewarding people who have never played for buying the game and punishing those who have been helping you out all along. Also I love how you think paying to test the game for your company is somehow a perk to the consumer.

I really love(d) this game but the support is totally killing it.. and things like this only serve to add more nails to the coffin.

Come on people, this is nothing new, pretty much all companies do this and have for a very long time. My local cable company offers HBO free for 6 months to “new subscribers”. The local phone company has offered free caller ID for “new customers”. My ISP has offered free MP3 players to “new subscribers”. Nothing new, nothing wrong with it at all. Have none of you seen offers where you buy a new video card and get a free game? Try this, go to google, and do a search on the phrase “offers for new customers only”.
Of all the many things about the game to complain about, this is not one of them.

I quit using AT&T when they started offering high speed internet to new customers in my area but wouldn’t allow me to subscribe because I had been with them for 16 years. They told me that I could cancel my service, wait three months, and come back and they’d allow me to connect at the higher speeds. They were even kind enough to tell me that I could keep my phone service, just cancel my internet for 3 months and come back to higher speeds…

I do understand wanting to get new customers. It makes perfect sense to want to entice new people to try the game. But, not allowing current customers the same product is kinda silly.

Hopefully this will end up being about as “exclusive” as the old Bonus Mission Packs and as soon as the hat is no longer an inducement they’ll make it available to anyone who wants it.

For some reason, when I post, it says “WIZARD’S KITTEN” and I don’t know why – I thought it may be a BB Code issue cause I copied and paste from the main page.. but even tried pasting it as plain text from notepad…

Oh well, the point remains the same. Wizard kitten Not Kitten.

It’s the stupid profanity filter. The “s” from wizard’s combined with the word “hat” makes a vulgar word that they want to prevent on the forums. So, they filter completely legitimate phrases. The other day I attempted several times to get across the idea that my guild keeps several bonuses going all the time — instead what comes out is Ankittenep magic find active at all times. That first word is supposed to be “and”

Now since I am a lesbian myself I understand that some words can be used hurtfully even though I don’t consider “Delta Yankee Kilo Echo” a bad word. But c’mon… with an “I”?? Gimme a break…

As a citizen of Tyrian all of the different, simultaneous, story lines make it more interesting than Orr; and as a person playing the game I can do my full daily in that one zone, and do it with decent drops/rewards.

More zones like Frostgorge — varied foes, multiple storylines — would be very welcome indeed.

Fractal Progress - make account based

So, I tried out Fractals this weekend, first time since its release. Man oh man, I do not know what I am doing. I ran around like a chicken with its head cut off, running under boiling oil, falling over trip lines, it was a mess. Hey, who wants me to join their Fractals lvl 20? Agony? I am sure it can’t be that bad! (total party whip imminent)

If the message that comes up tells current level the team can decide whether or not to risk it. I wouldn’t with a PUG, but would with a guild group in Mumble…

King of the Road (level 11)
Anastasia (level 6)
Lenny’s Squiggly (level 19)
BaJebus (level 2)
Walk Leetly (level 18)

The team now has the option of reforming without BaJebus, or continuing on at any level 19 or below. The level they choose is how difficult and how rewarding the fractal is — no making it any easier than it would be for 5 level 19s.

Really, it is far too devisive as it stands now for people who want to play fractals with guildmates and friends. PUGS can keep spamming for appropriate level players for as long as it takes, but guild members are always forced to downlevel their play. The current system is not good for guilds.

Guild reworking, plea of a large guild leader

in Suggestions

Posted by: Aye.8392

Aye.8392

I’m curious to see what boons you’re running and how fequently. Also, what all of your track tiers are.

We have the highest level of every tier upgrade, including the seemingly valueless 5th level politics, and we run constant Magic Find, and at least weekend Gathering — oftentimes more than that; we have Karma bonuses and WvW bonuses available to pop when we have WvW outtings. We sometimes have exp bonuses, but not very often, although we drop banners frequently and do things like the Guild Feast for simple fun We never run influence buffs, I have enough trouble spending the influence already. Our bonuses are much more limited by the 2 build limit than by the influence cost.

So, no, we don’t try to run 7 consecutive bonuses 24/7, but we also don’t need to do that to keep members representing the guild. We joke a lot, we group a lot, we have regular outtings for fun and play. That seems to keep people repping just fine.

Personally, I never mention guild upgrades or bonuses in recruitment, and if I had a player ask me which boons we ran I probably wouldn’t consider them a good fit for our guild. I want people people, not min-maxers, and that’s probably why you run a big guild and I run a small one. I’m glad there are differences like that out there. But, some of the things that would be helpful to you as the leader of a large guild would actually be hurtful to me as the leader of a small, casual, guild.

I want you to have the tools that you need to run your guild as long as they don’t negatively impact my guild. But, I doubt that would happen. They’ll either keep it the way it is now with no information tools available, or they’ll go 100% the other way and all information will be available to everyone. Either way one of us loses, so I’ll keep arguing against your tools for my own sake

If you had alliances to work with and so didn’t have to worry about the roster cap, and you had no visible report of activity, the way it is now, would you still cull members for inactivity? If inactivity data weren’t a drag on your membership’s morale, and you didn’t have to worry about the maximum numbers allowed would you let members keep their guild spots after a month or two months or a year of inactivity? If not may I ask why not? Is it just habit to cull the roster?

Also, yes, these things have been said over and over again. No one from A-Net has responded directly, but it would be really unusual for them to do so in the suggestions thread. They have said that guild features are being built and will be coming soon. I think that’s the trademarked soon and not just SOON, soon.

Calm down.

They have to wait to get back into the game and you can laugh, knowing you’ve won and that they’re too cowardly to face a quick death and respawn. You’ll earn more silver fighting and winning than they will save in repairs by quicklogging.

You know that you’ve won on the inside. They know they’ve lost. I don’t know about you, but that’s enough for me.

Agreed. And if people are that desperate to save repair costs then what’s broken is not Alt-F4. WvW costs more money to play then it gives in return, and that’s not exactly encouraging people to play. There is a lot that needs to be fixed when a player would prefer to quick log than to accept a death.

Guild reworking, plea of a large guild leader

in Suggestions

Posted by: Aye.8392

Aye.8392

My guild is not large — I began my guild at headstart with 8 members, I quit recruiting about a month ago when we hit 125, and we currently have 138 members. Ours is a casual guild, and if someone doesn’t sign in for 3 months, or if they do sign in but choose to represent another guild, we don’t think it’s a big deal — we’re happy to see them when they do jump into chat. I would honestly prefer that these tools didn’t exist at all; that instead alliances could be implemented so that the mega-guilds could keep all of their people and still have room for more and there would never be the need to cull a roster. Culling isn’t good for anyone — if someone has been out of game for 3 weeks and they come back to no guild, who is really served? Not the player, not the guild leader, not the guild members who enjoyed their presence, it just isn’t a very nice thing to walk back into.

If it should be that these suggestions are implemented, please make it so that only guild leaders or higher ranking officers can see them — if someone is able to admin the rank then they could see these stats, but otherwise they could not. There is no reason for general membership to be seeing that someone hasn’t signed on or repped the guild lately. It’s just something to breed discontent without any real significance or value.

My guild has LOTS of influence points — more than I can comfortably spend, even though I keep upgrades building all of the time. I don’t know how guilds with 500 people could possibly be hurting for influence unless the players don’t actually group up and do things together. An increase of influence would be superfluous for my guild unless there were some way to build more than 2 things at once. Building more than 2 things at once would be awesome, though. But I’ve never seen a guild member decide to rep someone else based on what buffs we have or don’t have active at the time. I’ve seen ‘em switch over because they couldn’t get a dungeon group and I’ve had people jump into my guild from repping another and say, “We’re trying to get a CoE group over at (insert epic guild name here) and we need 2 more, anyone want to join up?” But I’ve never seen buffs be a major determiner in where people play.

From this thread I would love:
Alliances
Splitting Invite and Admin
Having more than 2 upgrades building at one time
MOtD displaying at Log-in
Notification when people log on

I don’t care either way about:
Added influence from people who aren’t currently repping your guild

I actively dislike or want to see modified:
Time last logged in
Time last repped
Influence earned

Notification of someone leaving the guild being shown in guild chat — that is horrific and does nothing but create drama. There is a list on the roster history screen where you can get that information if you want to see it -- coming across chat should never happen.

GW2 takes everything you love about GW1...

1. In GW1: Play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. I loved that my guild and alliance had people from all over the world and we could all play together. Trinidad, Hungary, France, England, Canada and the US all represented themselves in my GW1 guild. We’re still in the same guild in GW2, but we can’t play together unless we’re doing a dungeon. The devs have said that guesting will be put in the game to bring this ability back, but the longer it takes the less likely it is to happen. I miss playing with my European friends. In GW1 we could be doing one of the huge festival events and say, “Go to International district 37” and we’d all be in the same spot, sync dancing, teasing, talking… In GW2 we end up in overflow servers. Sure, we can talk in guild chat, but it isn’t the same as being in the same spot together.

2. GW1: Sync dancing Yep, it’s here! Forming up those lines and dancing with friends (and strangers) is still great fun!

3. GW1: Alliances — I can’t tell you how badly I miss alliance chat in GW2. I farmed my butt off and bought a commander’s book just to have some cross guild chat, but it’s so difficult to get the squad going to begin with that it hasn’t really taken off. Now I miss my alliance AND my 100g.

4. No subscription fee. I would have paid it in GW1 if they had had it, and I would pay it in GW2 if they had it; I’m really glad that they don’t. It’s nice to not have to decide if you want to play that game that you bought 6 months ago this month.

5. “Brightly, brightly and with beauty!” Both games are truly beautiful. The characters are beautiful, the scenery is beautiful, the weapons are beautiful, the dye system makes the armor even more beautiful.

There is definitely carryover between the two games, and a lot of stuff to love in both. But GW2 doesn’t give the fluidity and options that GW1 did. Builds, character looks, play options, team options, weapon choices, all of that was available in GW1 — you want a necro with a shield? Equip a shield. kitten that was cool. You want a warrior with a staff? Well, at least we can all see at a glance that you’re a big dummy. You want a melee Ranger, without a pet, in a Russian district wearing flowers and burning candles on your head? Do it. Then hit a saved template, grab a bow, Map to the Great TEAMple of Balthazar and jump into some arena play. You could do it. That was what made GW1 a better game than GW2. GW2 doesn’t have the fluidity and player options that GW1 had.

Commander Icon Hatred?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s not because of the money… 100 gold is nothing now.

It’s because the icon is annoying, especially if there are more than one running around.

I agree, it is annoying. I would love for A-Net to give you and others a toggle switch so that you don’t have to see the commander’s icons at all. But, that’s not something that the commanders can do anything about. They didn’t create a large, ugly, overwhelming icon, and they didn’t decide that you shouldn’t be able to turn it off at your whim. Personally, I’m not killing my cross-guild squad chat. If I get whispers asking me to turn it off I’ll explain why I have it on. If I get rude whispers demanding that I turn it off I’ll use the tools A-Net has given me to deal with that: report and block.

There is a suggestion forum, and it has been suggested that A-Net provide a toggle switch for displaying the commander’s icons. Perhaps people who hate seeing them should voice that opinion in a venue where it might do some good.

I agree with this . Commander serves no purpose outside of WvW nor should it be shown outside of it . The only reason i can think its for gold is cause ANET wants to use it as a gold dump like T3 cultural armor .

I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. Commander DOES show a purpose outside of WvW. Squad chat allows a large group of people to chat with each other while still being in the map they want to be in, the party they want to be in, and repping the guild they want to rep. It’s like a limited form of alliance chat and it’s absolutely needed for that. I hope at some point A-Net will make give us actual Alliance chat and this will become obsolete, but until then changing the method of acquisition would be bad for people who use the book for social reasons.

I spent my 100 gold, bought my compendium, and it’s active at all times outside of WvW. If I’m going into WvW I turn it off, because I know I’m not a fit tactician/strategist/leader.

Why The Stat Cap Is So Important

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Aye.8392

So much of what you’ve said is true Wintyre, but it doesn’t go far enough. When game companies introduce vertical progression, level increase, and other types of power creep they are making earlier content less playable. They are destroying their own work and design efforts.

A-Net once said that because of level scaling the entire game is end-game, but in reality that hasn’t held true. It isn’t true because traits, weapons, armor, and skills make it so that I can’t take a level 80 character to Queensdale and enjoy any challenge at all. I can’t go play with a new player (or even an old player with a new alt) and have it so that they have any challenge at all while playing beside me.

Adding better stat armor, better stat weapons, more levels with the accompanying trait points and skills — these things exacerbate the problem. Right now I can still play and enjoy several dungeons, all fractals, and about 6 regular content maps. If A-Net releases a new expansion with new content but no power creep, players keep everything they have and get new places to play, too and that makes me very happy. If there is an expansion that increases the maximum character level, players will get new places to play, but at the same time lose some of those dungeons, and at least a few of the maps (Sparkfly is alredy pretty borderline) to power creep. It won’t be any fun to play in those places anymore.

With power creep A-Net loses because parts of the map that they’ve invested man hours in creating are no longer viable to all of their player base, and players lose options on where to play.

New content with no power creep is better for everyone involved. I honestly believe that players who ask for “progression” could be very easily satisfied with more content instead of bigger numbers. Yes, new things have to be added to the game to keep it fresh, but those things don’t have to consist of bigger numbers. That’s just what we’re used to.

What if Fractals had been introduced in their current form, difficulty increasing with every level, agony being introduced in higher levels, but nothing had been provided to mitigate it — no new armor tier, no new infusions. Players would still have flocked to the dungeon to experience the new content, and leaderboards could have shown the names of team members who kill the highest level Jade Maw. Players/teams would be forced to kill quickly, work on synergy, know when and where to throw support. What a learning experience this would have been! What bragging rights players could earn!

But, we have this thread instead.

Kick from guild and Nickname Improve options

Please make it so that it is only possible to kick someone from the Guild from the guild menu, and after a confirmation box. This is a big deal. I’ve had several of my officers accidentally kick members from the guild when trying to kick them from a party after they’ve logged off.

Also, please separate the Invite and Kick functions of Admin Lower Ranks.

Have you filed a support ticket or a bug report? You should do both. If it doesn’t make sense that you could equip only one on a character then it is possible that it is a bug. Posting on the forum isn’t the way to get A-Net to help you, and there’s nothing that we, as players, can do for you except remind you to file tickets.
