People who are high ranked on NA…. well… did exploit, actually quite openly, everyone knows it only customer support refuses to accept it by the looks of it (the actions or rather lack of it speak for themselves).

People who are high ranked on EU (for most part) are actually good players but they also play only in duoq or don’t queue at all. You will never get high rank and keep it by playing solo.

I am also surprised you just figured that current pvp system is a lottery. It has been like this for while. Only way to make up for bad draw is to be able to solo enemy team so your own team won’t even have chance to get wiped.

Maybe the other team were just better? think about it, the same constrictions are there for the other team. however the only consistent value is YOU, yes you can get unlucky but over time it will average out and you will be where you belong. which with the attitude i read…is silver.

It does not even out overtime, at least at higher ranks due to how MM works. Say top 4 are queueing. The MM puts them together in one team and looks for someone in similar rating to fill 5th spot. So far so good. Now the system attempts to build enemy team and here is the issue. There is only so many top players queueing at time. So what does Mm do? It grabs say some plat 2 players because they are next high ranked that queue at time. It grabs some gold players because it couldn’t find anything higher ranked. And then you have the case of top 5 players facing golds and plats. This is a thing, it does happen.
Take a wild guess how those matches go? It never gets better either.

The main reason why teams lose matches is bad rotation and teamplay. No matter how many unranked you play, you won’t be able to learn it unless you actually focus on it.

Letting other players vote can be abused. You don’t like someone? Convince other to vote against that person and that person would never be able to do ranked again. Same applied to someone that play unpopular build/class – say revs wound’t do so hot → everyone would vote that player out so they would never be able to do ranked again.

They need to enforce strict MMR ranges on teams. You are usually only as good as the weakest player or two on your team. Its is not fair to ask better players to carry weaker players. It is not fair to expect people that know the basics like the back of there hand to play with people that play like they have never conquest before. The idea that you can take two teams and if the MMR average of both is roughly the same that means it will be an ok match does not bare out in reality. I think +100 or -100 MMR range (from your MMR) would be fine. Queue times would increase but I think most would rather have better matches.

The joke is the MMr of both teams in current system is never same. In best case it is like 100+ points difference (usually more). The mean looks even worse. All because it doesn’t look for 10 people of same MMR and then forms teams but rather forms a team of players of similar rating then tried to assemble team of players of similar rating. Problem is, since not enough players play, especially at higher rating, you will have something like high rated paired with whatever else MM can find facing full team of top 10 players.

Main problem with thieves is they are the test between what is meta and what is not. If the build can’t deal with a thief than its not worth using. Not the thief’s fault, its just their initiative mechanic offers more damage pressure. Teams with 2 thieves can take advantage of this to quickly kill opponents. Blame anet for wanting unique mechanics when the game was created. Not allowing 2 thieves is just a band-aid fix. What you should be asking is why their mechanic gives them a dps advantage.

Then what was defining meta when nobody was playing thieves in s1 and s2?

Do I need to back it up though? Thief has always played a large role in defining the meta. You think anyone is going to play a berserker lb ranger when a decent thief is around? You think anyone is going to play FA ele when a thief is much more affective?

I am not saying thief is OP by any means. It has plenty of counters. I am saying that it limits builds other classes can play. I will retract my statement that initiative is the reason for it since their are many factors that go into thief being strong vs other dps builds.

Also, quit being a jerk and maybe we can have a constructive conversation.

Yes, you do. And no, thief did not always define meta. As stated before, in s1-s2 nobody played thief. The meta is defined by conquest and whatever is OP atm. You don’t play zerker LB ranger because you will get instagibbed by about anything not just thieves….

Once again, when nobody played thieves why did we not see more FA eles? Ohh right, because FA ele would still die really fast under pressure and can’t contest points without going down.

I could argue with you all day about this, but its not worth it. Apart from thief being out of the meta for 6 months out of GW2s 5 year lifespan I am not sure what your counterargument is.

The reason FA ele doesn’t work
1. They are less mobile than thief and cannot fulfill a decapper/roamer role as well
2. Thieves can easily pressure them because of the limitations of scepter as a weapon

The reason Zerker Ranger doesn’t work
1. Thieves can 100-0 them in 3 seconds (side story I rage quit the game for 2 months because I was so utterly outplayed by a thief on a zerker ranger)
2. There is alot of ranged denial
3. It is not good at far fights and is better utilized for defending home/mid node

I’ll just leave it at that. I’ve been playing for 5 years so I am not stupid when it comes to pvp. Let daddy show you how life works. BTW I am daddy.

Daddy bring your thief and duel my FA ele. Not really sure why you think thief wins.

I main ele though bud. This is based on my experience as an ele/ranger. I hardly play thief tbh.

It wouldn’t be as frustrating. It is enough that you are put on team with goldies vs legend players (which shouldn’t be happening on first place), you also get punished at full extend because system assumed it was a fair match.

I played two matches yesterday against top 50 players that easily had 100 rating over me. I won one of those matches, and lost the second. I got +16 rating for the win, and -10 on the loss. Which given the rating discrepancies seems appropriate.

Once again, the issue with glicko is that it is based on assumption that teams are even which they are not because gw2 pvp community got killed off by poor handling/decisions.

No it doesn’t. Glicko does not need good matchmaking to work. Glicko wasn’t even designed with matchmaking in mind. Glicko can work just as well with near random matchmaking.

Also blowouts are actually better for getting accurate rating than close matches. Why? Because in a 100-500 match you can definitively say without any doubt that the winning team is better. But a 499-500 match you don’t have a definitive answer to whether one team is better since that 1 point difference hinges on the tiniest of things. Honestly if you want the most accurate rating possible it’d be better to throw out any match with closer than 50 points, however the playerbase would probably riot if Anet ever did such a thing.

Lucky you, i have lost matches vs top 5 while having gold teammates and it cost me 2 wins at least. Why do you think it is acceptable? Why do you think it is ok to put people in blow out matches? So if someone is unlucky enough they will be always in blow out matches until they drop to rating where they can solo entire team? Sounds like really crappy system to me that doesn’t reflect player skill at all.

You are allowing for really awkward situations when both players can’t multi-class

I pretty sure Anet’s solution is too keep nerfing thief counters every patch until thief stacking becomes meta.

This is actually wrong. Anet has been buffing thief counters (see DH patch notes) and nerfing thief every patch so far after initial buff to AA (once again read patch notes). The only reason why thief is viable again is because we moved away from bunker horror of s1 and revs got nerfed thus allowing thieves to play again. This will probably all change anyway once xpac comes out.

The number of nerf/buff doesn’t matter, what matters is the class’s position in the metagame. Every single patch in the last year has moved thief up in the metagame.

The most recent major balance patch was a buff to thief despite including thief nerfs. Why? Because the stability change combined with the introduction of Sigil of Absorption made thieves far more effective.

Also DH hasn’t been buffed in over a year, idk what you are tripping on.

No DH uses a staff. The buffs in prior patches only affected core guard and not DH.

You’re right, mace also got buffed but if you get hit by faithful strike for the healing to proc, you’re terrible.

Well technically it is what placements are for, so described players end up in lower ranks until they improve. Problem is, as new player (to pvp) you start with average MMR so you are placed higher than where you belong and it takes time for them to tank down.

Ascended PvP Armor Not Worth It?

Anet’s mentality is this: you play PvP for fun/competitiveness, you get rewards while doing it.

Those rewards are not aimed at this group of players however – they are clearly aimed at PvE. No need for ascended tier gear in sPvP after all.

That’s the problem with the reward system currently – the rewards themselves are aimed at non-sPvP players, but the method of obtaining them is balanced around those that sPvP primarily.

I think it’s actually for players who primarily enjoy either game mode.
PvE players get armour they want for Fractals/skins for fashion, they wouldn’t try PvP if it meant not earning what they would earn in PvE.
PvP players get armour they can use if they want to do fractals/raids or WvW.
Players who only play one game mode exclusively are probably the minority of the entire playerbase.

People that pvp and need ascended for raids/fractals get those from…. drumroll…. raids and fractals (drops) because pvp is worst alternative for getting armor atm (coming from someone who actually raids/does fractals and has multiple geared classes). The only thing i used shards for is trinkets that is.

I did, and I read a dissertation laying out three options for fixing Glicko rating systems, specifically for team games of few players (5v5), stating them in a post above.

The gist is that the personal vs enemy team method right now is actually the best method to give players an equal experience, with team vs team being inaccurate, and individual vs all individuals on enemy team being improbable.

Given that there’s so much dissatisfaction going around though, would team vs team solve the problem or would it mess up everything but unfair matchups?

It wouldn’t be as frustrating. It is enough that you are put on team with goldies vs legend players (which shouldn’t be happening on first place), you also get punished at full extend because system assumed it was a fair match. As i said, at some point you come to conclusion – why bother? and quit pvp all together. Just think about it, in other seasons before this system was added people played 300+ matches now they play required 120 and quit.

Bunker Meta so boring!

was fighting a ele the other day, he literally doesn’t drop below 100% health. I’m using condis as a necro. I can get in a lucky melee hit and he takes some dmg, and apply about 5 condis, but then he cleanses them all before they tick once, and he’s back at 100% health. But. He can still stunlock me and press 2 buttons to deal 20k dmg. This is absolutely horrible balancing. What the kitten is anet thinking?? NO class should be immune to an entire damage type. I don’t care that he has to use all his sigil slots and and about 2 traits to do that, it’s just not fair to not be able to deal ANY DAMAGE AT ALL while he can still kill me in three seconds.
I’m quitting this game until this bullkitten is fixed. Being immune to half the world’s damage and still being able to kill everyone who plays the game is just dumb.

I soloed 2 eles on core thief yesterday while playing NA (so high ping included). Eles are not immortal and they also die under pressure pretty fast like any other class.
I don’t see ele doing 20k dmg unless he runs full zerker (meaning he has 11k HP), in this case you should have easily killed him. That so called immunity is very situational and even as necro you can easily overcome it.

The rank gain/loss system does not take in calculation that you might be handicapped in the match by having teammates divisions below your enemies but you get punished by the system fully because it sees it as fair match of equally ranked players.

So what they should do is include a variable in the system that takes into account player tier difference (or maybe another one for rank volatility) that would in theory reduce the loss in rating?

So basing rank gains/losses on personal mmr vs avg enemy team MMR is simply stupid, unfair, doesn’t make sense, you name it.

Theres a reason why they removed the grindbased leaderboards of Season 1-3 , because it didnt reflect the actual acomplicements of the true PvPers .
While the may have kept the casuals from enjoying the system , the ACTUAL PvPers where leaving left and right for other games that offered recognision …

Having the best system (curently one) will produce more pros and ultimatly more teams will be created to join the scene .
This PvP scene , will attract like magnet the average casual Joe’s eye , and they will follow the pros on twitch

Why not create the season 7 , based on the same mechanics too ?
So all the 2017 will be the era of TRUE BASED LEADERBOARDS that we will tell on our grandchildren !

With the old system people complained about always being attacked while trying to look at stats. With new system people feel the winners gloating over the enemy corpses is degrading.

Simplest solution right now would be to give the losing team their own room to, just a less festive one.

We are not in bunker meta atm o.o We have few bruisers (scrapper, war, druid, guard, rev to extend), rest are condi or power without extremel surival tools + ele as support. Not to mention we have two classes that have great impact on match outcome as roamers -
roamers would be obsolete in true bunker meta.
Bunker meta is something completely different. S1 was bunker meta.

I find that when you win, the end is even more satisfying.

I don’t. I do not enjoy humiliating the enemies (because frankly that is what new victory screen as) more than we already do. Also, if you take current MM into account it gets even worse. You win 500-100, then you dance on their corpses? I personally just feel bad :/ Oh great, i am put together in the same bunch of people that have the need to show off their superiority/trashtalk other and i can’t do anything about it beside leaving match really fast :|

Used to be a point in time where D/P thieves would just generally avoid or ignore me on my scrapper hammer. Now they regularly try to 1v1 me, although I generally win the fight and they run away, not without hurting me badly though.

Do you think this meta will hold? It almost seems like the buffing is a bit too extreme for thieves at the moment.

I engaged scrappers (in pvp) for 3 reasons only:
- to +1 my teammates
- to stop scrapper from capping our point in hope someone will come help (i can troll scrappers for a while, actually win vs them if they are not as good, even plat has those lel)
- troll scrapper long enough to keep point decaped while my team gets to other points from spawn

That being said, given same skill level, thief would never win vs scrapper in 1v1. Now core engi is different story, you can actually kill those.

Ive just come back after a long break, started in silver and ranked to gold in two days solo queing. I had manyragers and toxic players, i ignored them and we even won some of those games. Does the mmr ranking change when i get to a highr rank? I dont see a prob with where im at. I win proll 60%. Im more surprised they havent brought in ctf or tdm in the comp scene… its a shame because this game has alot of potential for a real competitive scene they just dont capitalize on it.

It get really bad in plat and generally as higher you get and the more games you play the less you get and lose more.
As far as gold goes, don’t rely on it. I had like 100% winrate in gold when i landed there for some reason last season.

At least you get to win matches. We get constantly teamed with absolutely clueless people. Win 1 lose 5. And before somebody suggests that: No, it’s not because of our Duo.

That is because i stop playing once i lose a match and usually take a day break. Also weekends, holidays, past 10 pm (CET) etc. are bad for queuing. Last season i almost dropped out of plat because i queued on weekend/holiday – lost weeks of progress in one evening (had to play anyway due to decay and min match requirement).

As i said 10000 times before, 1 DH is not an issue, stacked are due to team utility (heals, CC, aoe blocks, aoe stab, fast rez etc.)

And yes, there are a lot of DHs in higher tiers (past few matches i seen double DHs on each team).

I am serious. I rarely ever see condi thief so i am not sure where you pull your numbers.

Join in a random guild and/or ask radom people if they think that condi thief is strong. People who know that condi thief is kitten are not so much if you compare to the rest of the community

I am in a few guilds (mostly filthy pve’ers, myself including :P) and they don’t think condi thief is the way to go beside being stupidly annoying.

…aaaand i just barely won match (we were something like 250 points behind, the team was obviously worse than enemy, they basically got too full of themself (really filters?) and overcommitted eventually) and got only 10 pts for it but i am sure it would cost me 18+ for losing it. I am surprised tbh, it is not hard to deal with burn guard. You let them stack burn and cleanse it. They don’t have many CDs left while you used 1. I really wish sigil of generosity wasn’t removed – it made fighting burn guards so funny since they can’t deal so well with their own 15+ stacks of burn.

Matchmaking cannot create balanced matches. It does not happen (i am sitting in games where team is zerging animal, chasing 1 guy somewhere off point etc. while we losing everything, 3 golds vs legends – yeeeeeee balanced matches guizeeee). Alone due to lack of population. So basing rank gains/losses on personal mmr vs avg enemy team MMR is simply stupid, unfair, doesn’t make sense, you name it.

Either make sure that matches are always balanced or fix the rank gain/loss system.

Why should one even queue when you need to win 2-3 games just to make up for 1 loss (it gets worse the more games you play)? This has been going on for 3 seasons now, this is one of the reasons why people quit pvp or exploit the system by tradewinning, queueing at 5am etc.
Rank gain/loss should be based on team mmr vs enemy team mmr because the base (balanced matches) for the current rank gain/loss system simply does NOT exist.

You need to wait for others to be ready. You may not see it but there might be Mossman attacking them before they can even grab orb or they are stuck with skelks or a trap. In low levels it is not an issue but in t4 you barely have any time, there are JPs everywhere and traps moving after you.

Let’s assume they didn’t tell you why they kicked you but frankly you also did the same – you didn’t tell them that you are ready and didn’t wait for other to get ready. From their perspective it probably looked like you were trolling hence why they kicked you.

When I look at the top stats at end of the game the vast majortiy of the time the people awarded them are also the people I felt played best in the game. Also, if you play a lot and have a good memory of who the better players are again they are the ones getting the top stats usually. Most people build there classes to fill a specific role. For example if you are a dps you should be getting top damage and/or kills often. So long story short I feel like extra pips for top stats are totally appropriate.

It heavily depends on role. You are not going to get any/many top stats as roamer for example due to nature of the role. You do get rewarded a lot for afking on point and spamming everything off CD.

And as stated above, the only other case you get top stats as roamer for example is when you miles better than your team and literary doing their job. It is not a subjective thing when even your enemy says you carried your team.

It’s a mape where you can use jumps and enviroment to protect yourself, the best map to do that.
If a player know how to move he’s in a big advantage compared to other players that are lesser experienced or just want to fight in a more direct way.

Ranged classes/builds have huge advantage in this map and classes with movement skills can disengage or cover easy.
I like that map because with the necromancer I’ve few ways to move around still if I don’t have any movement skill, but sometimes that make make me mad for the same reason.

yeah until you start fighting on side points and get NO VALID PATH on flat terrain everywhere

Nah, they are not obsessed with dps it’s just common sense that the more dps you bring the easier it is to kill a boss. KC with a good amount of dps in the burn phase = 3 phases in total and not a single more. Gorse no updraft = no need to fly outside and walk around like chicken. VG with enough dps = little field rotation = lesser possibility of mistakes and so on. Similar things on the other bosses.
I’m also a fan of playing mechanics properly while most of my guild mates are dps orientated. In the end you need both and in pugs it’s a matter of fitting together or not.

It is also common knowledge that people obsessed with dps also often ignore fight mechanics/don’t rez teammates/die themselves a lot etc. Especially all those beloved condi rangers that just fart their golem rotation, brag with their dps, trashtalk other while they don’t have any other job to do like canons or killing adds/orbs. Makes me want to puke, honestly.

As for topic, i do wish this game had some kind of LFR tool, kind of like for pvp. A person could queue for a raid under certain role, a group of 10 would be put together and they would face raid bosses that have bit easier mechanics (e.g. dealing less dmg) and less rewards + no LI. Works wonderful in wow, i don’t understand why it can’t work in GW2.

Atm, all you can do (as new player) is to find a guild that would be willing to take you into raids (which also not guaranteed, because usually those guilds already have a core group in which you will never get a spot and second/third groups don’t always raid because GMs don’t have time/don’t care/there are not enough people so you sit there for weeks without even entering an instance once but hey, they still require full rep and be nice to everyone and donate and all, oh and don’t forget forced registration on some guild website which will result phishing emails later -the summary of my epic raiding experience. Thankfully i don’t need to raid anymore as i have legendary armor now).

New PvP change- Choking Gas

As expected, they “changed” it. Surely, it was nice, it also drained off ini you like crazy but whatever. At the end i still relied more on steal daze to stop rezzes as choking gas was just not fast enough. As for general fights, it didn’t have that much difference (at least from my experience) as there are so many blocks/stab/condi cleanse flying around. Regardless the change i will be still camping d/p 24/7 as (omg cmon forum filters) sb will remain teleport tool basically.

I really wish they would rather put all that effort into nerfing elite specs and making core an a viable/good alternative in pvp than continuously nerfing spells on weapon sets, adding some silly buffs that nobody asked for just to basically revert them later.

Whole mid section of fighting area (see screenshot, area marked red) causes no valid path error. I can’t use neither steal or shadowstep while standing there or if target stands in the area.

This happens in pvp, this happens in wvw, this happens in fractals now as well… entire groups (5 man, 10 man, 50 man) get instantly kicked to login screen. I assume 50 man miraculously lost connection?
