To me the easiest way to kill a thief is when he goes into stealth. Most of the times when a thief stealths he thinks he is safe and let his guard down… I can’t see him but he is always there.
Stealth is not a teleport and if a stealthed thief uses a teleport skill his stealth will be broken.
No cap increase. Maybe they can add other things to make characters stronger (ie: daoc’s master level). I think that would be nice.
I noticed that if you do not have any target “hidden thief” stealths you and “steal” goes in full CD. If you have a target but it in not in range “steal” goes in a 5sec CD but you do not get stealthed.
Didnìt try with “bountifull thief”.

seriously I think ANet should be more accurate with that.
One can be a mistake but two unreported changes related with stealth ability… it seems that ANet didn’t want to write too much into the “Thief profession changes”.
I think traps are very good for an ambush bs build.
place needle trap+ shadow trap over a bridge or in a key point then go away (maybe under the bridge)
when traps are triggered your enemy is immobilized, poisoned, with 10stacks of vulnerability and you are teleported behind him and stealthed. At this point the thief has to press “1-2-2”.
maybe if you provide us more info we can help you to figure out something to try over changing your play style.
it is a teleport so you should not see the character fly or run to you (unless maybe a bug or some lag issue)
regarding steal it is not reported in combat log as it does no damage unless it is traited with “Mug”. this does not mean he didn’t use it.
Shadow step + steal = 2100 range (2400 if steal is traited) and it can be almost istant.
Hello, here is what I did:
a lvl 80 thief in his medium armor with no bonuses has 10805HP and 1980 defense.
Considering an opponent with exotic dagger ( ~ 952 weapon damage), 1800 power, using backstab skill ( 2.405 skill coefficient).
plain damage will be: (952*1800*2.405)/1980=2081 dmg/hit (if damage formula in the wiki and skill coefficient found in another topic on this board are correct)
so 5.2 hits are necessary to take down our poor thief.
Keeping untouched opponent’s weapon damage, power and skill coefficient I put all items+traits bonuses in vitality (that brings our thief to more or less 25k HP) and then I started to lower vitality by 10 points and increase toughness by 10 points.

Why do you say that “the differance between 2000 to 2500 toughness protects a lot more than the differance between 2500 to 3000” ?
Can you bring us some numbers?
Up to now the only formula I found is
Damage done = (weapon damage) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armor) – from GW2 Wiki.
Armor= Defense+Toughness and there is nothing about hard or soft statistic cap.
If you have different info, please provide it.

i experienced lag issue just once. that was terrible but after a couple of hours everything became normal (maybe I had connection problems).
And for the records you can pay your 15$ and have a crappy and laggy service as it was in WAR.
the only strange thing is the camera inclination. maybe the screenshot is taken from a downed player … but the game looks just like that.
didn’t try but maybe you can put karma items in the mystic forge.
otherwise you can use the Mystic Clover recipe (karma-skill point-mystic coin-ecto) to get tier6 materials.

i know ppl that have done wow halloween event for years (years – not 12 hours) and didn’t get the mount.

As said, Halloween event weapons should NOT require more resources/cost than a legendary. I want fun; THAT is not fun.

there is the possibility of permastealth attack. I wrote it on this forum some weeks ago but no one cared about it.
basically you hit once every 3 seconds timing c&d cast time with stealth’s fade.
this technique keeps the thief hidden and deal 2-3k every 3seconds… not really usefull but possible.
I suggested one possible anti cheese “economic” solution for all those thieves with less than 20k hp … I have 14/15k hp and 2.2k defense and I was hit for over 3k with steal.
In this scenario steal triggers instinctual response and c&d misses. Now I am a stealthed thief against a visible one that has probably triggered assassin’s signet.
I faced a lot of bad elementalists and a few good ones.
Believe me, elementalists are far away from UP. Maybe you should try something different with your traits or weapons.

You asked for a viable build. I think that some utilities are better then “big numbers”. I generally play with random classes so it could happen to not have a guardian, nor a heavy armor character in group.
You should also consider that if you are dead you do no big numbers.
Hi, I think that “instinctual response” ( II of trickery ) is a great defensive anti glass cannon trait.
It can be your life saver even against an unseen c/d-steal-bs

i’m using d/p for trash. aoe blind is awesome.
i switch to p/p for ranged boss and d/d for melee boss.
my utilities are
shadow refuge: helps a lot when someone goes down and to manage aggro.
blinding powder: same reasons as SR
haste
pve … everything is good in pve and it is so situational that you can’t do a single build for pve.
Thieves will be nerfed and then all bad thieves will reroll and all good players will find how to kill you. I know… it sucks that you will be face down in any case.

Hi, i sometimes use stealth as a panic button, when immobilized and with 2-3 ppl hitting me i cast blinding powder that is an aoe blind + 4secs of stealth (with my build). I can generally wait to be able to move again, and go away or at least it gives me 1 sec to place the shadowstep gt as far as i can, than shadowstep, dodge (2s of swiftness), than stealth again (with healing skill or shadow refuge. or rarely using steal with hidden thief trait and no target).
@TheGuy: no, when you use a smoke field and HS you won’t appear when you hit. I used it tons of time. I reached lvl 80 as a D/P using Black Powder, Heartseeker, Backstab.
I think that the “leap finisher” trigs stealth when it hit, so when it is completed, and so it doen’t break stealth. Otherwise it will be a useless combo.

I am wearing berserker’s amulet+rings+earrings+weapons, valkyrie’s armor; all exotic.
I have less then 2k power. I can have another 165 from runes and 300 from traits and a little bit from food.
It will be almost 2500, that is 1000 power missing…
Critical chance is @ 46% … far away from 60.

it is in cooldown as are in cooldown the stealth and the teleport abilities of thieves… just deal with it.

exactly what ZLE said. We fight against thieves as other ppl do. I personally was insta killed by a steal-c&d-bs combo… now i’m working to find a solution to prevent that kind of death.
almost every class can instakill another glass cannon. Why only thieves are OP ?
