Let’s get this straight people. If I’m in charge of Kryta, and the pact goes to defend the largest stronghold of pirates on the continent, then I will no longer support the pact financially nor will I support it with men and arms.
The idea that the Pact is a task force designed specifically to fight dragons is noticeable, but you have to account that while the Orders make up most of the Pact forces, they also include auxiliaries of all nations in the continent of Tyria. You really can’t deploy them all without due support from their home nations, as shown with Reach’s reluctance to give support to Lion’s Arch.
Exactly.
An organisation like the Pact would only be allowed to exist under joint tutelage of the 6 nations. If it were to act independently from the conditions set up by the nations, i would become a rogue organisation, likely to be outlawed by some of them, if not all in order to avoid a diplomatic incident. Though those tight reins allow the Pact to only operate in a narrow field, it is a necessity to prevent the Pact from competing with the structures of power and eventually gain the imperial policy-making power of the Praetorian Guard in the Roman Empire.Maybe in the future a more radical faction of the Pact will exist. They see the Pact as too “passive” and “slow to response” in the face of danger. The Pact isn’t as efficient in protecting the people as they would like.
Remember that we (the players) are the Pact. If many of us (not all) feel that the Pact leadership is too passive, that means many members of the Pact feels the same. By lore, Traherne and the Pact leadership cannot ignore these opinions. They are real in the game.
By extension, any “popular” opinion posted on these lore forums are indeed opinions from members of the Pact. These is no absolute “right” and “wrong”. It is obvious that members of the Pact often disagree with each other on how to do things.
The Pact isn’t run by some absolute monarchy, so freedom of opinion and freedom of speech is highly valued.
However, the pact is funded by an absolute monarchy.
Why would the completely failed Marionette grab the Pact’s attention if the Tower of Nightmares, which was far more destructive, did not?
Not sure I follow you on the Marionette. How did it fail? What was it supposed to accomplish that it didn’t?
I just meant that it was destroyed.
I seem to remember a lot of people dying due to what you call a failed weapon.
I find it interesting she mentions Scarlet was still fighting to keep her mind. This implies that whatever was happening to Scarlet was not dragon corruption, as in almost every case, once corrupted you don’t fight against it.
Has anyone checked Biegarth or the inquest Arcane Councillor who had dialogues on Scarlet before?
Unless your name is Kellach, then you fight against the corruption. Dragon corruption does not always instantly take away your free will.
There is no evidence that proves sylvarii that are not part of the dream can’t be corrupted.
Why would the completely failed Marionette grab the Pact’s attention if the Tower of Nightmares, which was far more destructive, did not?
Not sure I follow you on the Marionette. How did it fail? What was it supposed to accomplish that it didn’t?
The nightmare Court memories are fed to the tree, I believe the Soundless memories are also.
From the wiki:
_as the tree gathers emotions and memories, she draws from the Nightmare Court as well as their kinder brethren, and her pool of memories swells with both dark and light thoughts. _
My personal opinion is that the nightmare has nothing to do with Mordy, and that the dream and the nightmare are simply two sides of the same coin. I say this because the Nightmare Court still seems intent on fighting dragons.
I think the only reason that Mordy was able to get to Scarlet was because she was separated from her defenses in the isolation chamber. I believe the dream is a localized phenomenon that is protecting the minions of the grove from dragon corruption. While in the chamber Scarlet was separated from the dream and became vulnerable to Mordy.
Hmmm… Mordy has all the horses. That’s why they all disappeared.
I think it’s good Scarlet didn’t get to explain. I think it’s good that there are so many unanswered questions. Life doesn’t answer all our questions. Also, all these questions give us something to talk about.
Anet wants to cut all of its ties with GW1.
Except they don’t.
Then why have they mostly created new lore out of whole cloth, with minimal ties to GW1 lore? Why have they failed to get into some of the truly excellent unresolved questions and plotlines from 250 years ago? They’re sitting on a gold mine of unused and unexplored ideas for content, yet they insist on ignoring it for the most part. Please explain to me how this failure to cash in on everything they set up in the first game is anything but ignoring the GW1 lore. Yes, the core game has shout-outs and references, but the Living Story has absolutely minimal ties to GW1. The only thing I can think of is the reference to the Zephyrites taking care of Glint’s remains, but that’s about it. Indeed, the alliances were highly, highly implausible under the established lore of the core game of GW2 itself. That’s just bad writing that shows that the writers are making up whatever they feel like without regard to the core game or to GW1.
Because all that stuff is 250 years old.
Things don’t usually stay incredibly relevant for over 2 centuries. It’s time for new stories with inklings of the past thrown in. I don’t want to have all of GW1’s plots come front and center unless it is actually relevant and server a purpose beyond fan service.
If they bring back the Mursaat, I want there to be a reason.
If they decide Abaddon DIDN’T die, then I want there to be a reason.
If the Dwarves suddenly make their triumphant return from the Depths of Tyria, I want there to be a reason. What I don’t want is for these things to happen and have them just be pandering to a fan base that played their first game. That’s why we had the first games in the first place: to tell those stories. Those unresolved questions – like the Mursaat and the fate of Cantha and Palawa Joko in Elona – might get resolved in the future, but as it stands right now, there’s no reason to bring two hundred year old stories back to the lime light unless they mesh with the newer stories being told.
I want for there to be valid story reasons for bringing these things in too. Pandering to a fanbase just to gain favor with them should be avoided. But what I’m asking is why Anet hasn’t even touched its existing lore, and instead has pulled 95% of the Living Story out of thin air.
Imagine writing a bestselling novel. Then you write a sequel that builds upon the original and has shout-outs to the events and characters of the first book. Then you come up with a direct sequel to the second book, but instead of using the old story and characters, you create entirely new characters, ignore or clumsily retcon the story of the first two books, and ultimately come up with a plot that is barely connected to the first two books at all.
Example:
Book 1 is set in late medieval Europe, and the main character, A, is a knight. An invading army is threatening his country (Country), so he works with B, C, and D against the evil machinations of X. A wins, but B dies.
Book 2 is set in early renaissance Europe, and the main character, G, is a nobleman the son of A. He is joined by H and I, the descendants of B and C, as well as D (who is really old at this point) in a quest to discover who’s trying to overthrow the government of Country. There are shout-outs to the past events from Book 1, but the plot is different enough to be interesting while retaining the popular aspects of Book 1 that got the series going.
Book 3 takes place right after Book 2, but G steps down from his noble title and becomes a police officer, the supporting cast in this book is 100% new and unrelated to the previous characters, H, and D are completely absent, and only I is present in a one-paragraph cameo. The plot this time involves G hunting down tax evaders (which is nothing compared to the epic scope of the first books). Plot elements from Book 2 are outright ignored, or otherwise characters’ statements directly contradict what was clearly established in the previous works. The only similarity between Book 2 and Book 3 is that they take place in the same country and feature the same protagonist, G. Other than that, Book 3 has no plot connections to Book 2.
Have you read Piers Anthony’s Xanth novels? They get disconnected real quick.

how about also adding a possibility to trade belongings and heirlooms? i failed to use mine in time.
I hate to say it but that is on you alone for not using the heirlooms and belonging. It was posted several times that the vendors would be removed with this patch.
Posted where? On the forums? Most of the player base does not read those, so most players did not have any notice about it. This information was not in-game or in the previous patch notes. There is absolutely no harm in keeping the belongings and heirlooms vendors around for a few extra days.
In contrast to your statements, you do read the forums. Therefore, you have no excuse.
And what makes your character’s view infallible? However, I’d like to point you out to the two maps of new probes. One centralizes on the Far Shiverpeaks.
She may have been intending to repeat her actions at Lion’s Arch further north, affecting Jormag. Either way, it’s obvious that Lion’s Arch wasn’t the end of her plans.
But why is Taimi wrong when you don’t know her sources? She is in full agreement to the PC st that, whom never states she was after a single Dragon.
You have no proof that anything further was planned. Dots on a map are not evidence.
All known production facilities were either destroyed or abandoned. The evidence presented in Edge of the Mists only stated that Lion’s Arch was her target. In order to promote this fantasy of multiple attacks, you not only have to make up new evidence you have to ignore existing evidence.

I’m hoping for bag and bank slots to go on sale.
I wonder if will be able to save profiles like we were able to do in GW1.
@Konig: Taimi is mistaken. It was dragon – singular. Taimi’s information is all second hand. The link below is first hand. Therefore it’s a better source.

The best way to mend a broken heart is to kill some sylvari.
But… but we never got to see Scarlet’s taters…
Taters, later? sigh.
So yeah, they kind of do have a reason to be hated and carefully watched.
Carefully watched? Yes. Hated? No. Scarlet was the cause of all this suffering and pain (and a council that mass effect’s would be proud of). One person should not be a representative of all people in that race/group/ethnicity. I’d also like to point out Zojja fought influence from a dragon champion and succeeded. If anything I’d be wary about the nightmare court and trying to warn Marrik’s people of the coming threat.
It was not a fight against just one sylvari. There were numerous sylvari butchering innocent women and children. The Pale Tree did nothing to stop this, she is complicit.
So I guess we should torch all humans also then.
And Norn.
And Asura.
And Charr.
Whatever floats your boat I guess.

What would it cost you, or any other player, for them to correct this?
Irrelevant. Policy is policy.
I’m not even getting into the rest of this. That is their policy, that is what they’re working with. It is their chosen direction. It doesn’t matter how easy or hard it would be. It doesn’t matter if it hurts or helps anyone. They made the decision and you don’t like it, but you don’t make their policy, so that really doesn’t matter.
Policy can be changed. It happens all the time. I have no dog in this fight, but I don’t think it would be unreasonable to allow the vendors to stick around a bit. However, even if they have the vendors for an extra 2 weeks, people would complain when they get removed.
I don’t know if I’d go to the lengths that they went with Teq, but I find the SB battle to be total dullsville. It would be nice if it could be improved.
So your character wants to defend pirates? Is your character evil?
So yeah, they kind of do have a reason to be hated and carefully watched.

Maybe the voices she heard aren’t Dragons whispers. We dont know this yet. She tried resist it, it was a slow process, and i think she had a bunch of free will even at the stomp when we killed her.
End of the day, her plan to wake Mordremoth couldn’t have worked without knowledge of Mordremoth’s location. Information that could only have been relayed to her by Mordremoth.
Actually, it wasn’t Mordy’s location that mattered, it was the intersection’s location that mattered. Mordy could have been anywhere and felt the disruption.
Maybe the voices she heard aren’t Dragons whispers. We dont know this yet. She tried resist it, it was a slow process, and i think she had a bunch of free will even at the stomp when we killed her.
Kellach had free will up until we stomped him also. Corruption doesn’t necessarily remove your free will.
@konig – What hints at multiple dragons? I thought it said she was trying to wake up a dragon and there is only one that is sleeping still according to all historical records.
Finally, we need to take the information that we have about Scarlet and take it to the Pale Tree with some questions. I think a lot of folks died because the Pale Tree tried to protect Scarlet. I believe the Pale Tree knows more than she is letting on.
(edited by DarcShriek.5829)
Y’know, the aftermath dialogue kind of hints that Scarlet was not corrupted.
In the instance, it’s talked about Scarlet redirecting the ley lines to multiple dragons. Not just one.
So it may be that she was out to empower multiple dragons – perhaps for the same reason she let Thaumanova blow up. She wanted to watch what happened, and learn from it.
If I remember correctly the text specifically says she wanted to wake a dragon. Therefore, either she was controlled by the one or there is at lease one dragon that no one is aware of.
Omadd never went into the isolation chamber, y’know.
And even then, did Mordremoth chose Scarlet? Was it an active choice of being Scarlet or was it a “anyone will do” case? Or was it pure coincidence?
Why would Mordremoth need Omadd to go into the chamber? If the chamber is the reason, then Mordy needs to talk to someone about making a whole bunch of these chambers.
My theory is that Mordy was waiting for someone like Scarlet. It’s not unreasonable to assume that if one pale tree can produce Scarlet, then all of them can. If there is a link between Mordy and the sylvari, it’s not unreasonable to assume that Mordy would just wait for the first Scarlet type to show up and use it to wake him up. Scarlet just happened to be first, because her tree was planted first. Mordy simply caught a lucky break when she went into the chamber and be freed from the protection of the dream.
(edited by DarcShriek.5829)
Why didn’t Mordremoth choose Omadd instead of Scarlet. It’s not like Omadd was stupid. He’s the guy the created the chamber that allow Mordremoth contact with Scarlet. Why did Mordremoth not choose Omadd? What was Mordremoth waiting for?
After all the hard wor that Scarlet went through to wake up her master, I think it’s a safe position to say that she was corrupted.
False, Sons of Svanir are not corrupted, but refer to Jormag as to his master.
Sons of Svanir choose to become Sons of Svanir. Scarlet was chosen. hat’s a big difference.

[Spoilers] Trahearne & the Living Story: WTF?
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath
Posted by: DarcShriek.5829
I was a little disappointed to learn that Trahearne spent the past few months, much less the past year, of Scarlet’s rampage twiddling his thumbs down at Fort Trinity.
While I understand that, from a military standpoint, she presented no significant threat requiring The Pact’s support up to her involvement in Kessex Hills, from the Marionette to Lion’s Arch she presented a massive threat to Tyria! Her armies killed thousands and threatened even more.
Wouldn’t the Commander (the player character) have had any say in the matter? We learn from Laranthir that he had to coerce the All-mighty Marshal to send at least one ship to check things out… after the battle was over! From a public relations standpoint, and to steal a line from the Firstborn himself, “this won’t end well.”
Frankly, I think this little amendment to the Living Story is cheap and yet another poor storytelling element to a woefully pitiful story arch. While the end result is greatly welcomed (namely, we got a Dragon – finally), the entire journey has been one big bed of coals we’ve had to suffer walking over. Trahearne has become one of my least favorite characters of all time with this move.
Trahearne is not at fault. He answers to the Pale Tree, and in Sylvari society, every Dreamer listens to the commands of Mama Tree, who motto is “We come into this world to destroy the dragons. We must not lose ourselves in that challenge” (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dream_and_Nightmare#Biology). Most likely, the Pale Tree told her people stay out of the situation because it had nothing to do with dragons (or so she thought).
The Sylvari Dreamer commanders wouldn’t be at fault either. They’re all just following Mama’s orders.
I have to disagree with your explanation. Only because I think that the Pale Tree new full well that a dragon was involved from the beginning.
She claims to be “designed” for statics. Could she be an advanced golem?

A: NOBODY knew where Scarlet’s armies were. He can’t order an attack on an enemy he can’t find.
Everyone and their dogs know that she going to invade there. Evon knows, the people that know about the thumper on underwater knows, those ls characters know, and hell, we ourselves and just march right into the council and say we know. The invasion pull off because writer dictate it, not because anyone don’t know about the invasion.
The evidence in the story states quite clearly that the captain’s council did not believe an attack was imminent. So obviously, not everyone and their dog knew. The responsibility of the defense of Lions Arch rests squarely on the shoulders of the captains council and the blew it. It is not the pact’s fault, it is the council’s fault.

@Kalavier: It’s been 2 weeks. Isn’t that long enough to clean Orr?
Well I don’t know how to put it, but usually MMOs are pretty static places, some in the past did something similar, but this is the first time I was fully involved in something that really change an important location. And as silly at it sounds, I do feel now Lion’s Arch is a bit more “Mine” than it was before. Before it was a cool city in a cool game, now it is slightly more personal, I have seen it burning through the eyes of my character, we went around seeking refugees and helping them escape, then we battled in it, then now we can see it lay in ruins after the aftermath .
I know it does sound silly, but it make the place more alive for me, more “Real” and if the scars of the battles will show in a new Lion Arch, or if it remain in ruins, I can really say that the Living Story is very.. alive.
I don’t think it’s silly. In fact, I think you’ve brought up an important point.
So Peter, I see you made it out of Lion’s Arch.
I would compare Scarlet Briar’s possible case of corruption to Kellach’s case more than to a dragon champion though.
Maybe. However, Scarlet seemed to be selected to perform a specific task, where Kellach seemed to be more a random incident designed to cause trouble.

But what do we get? “You have a sister? insert 2 minute silence Ow, my leg hurts. uh-huh” and a movie that didn’t load for me. (So I looked it up on youtube. For those who missed the video too. Someone uploaded it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8mQlYXyZqE )
Apparently, a couple of updates ago Braham approached Kas and asked if Jory had a sister. Him being lonely and all since his girl left him.
Yeah, this is one of the first times they mentioned human bandits in the Living Story, right? Since it’s black market, I’m thinking it could lead down two paths, possibly both being interrelated -
White Mantle supporting bandits and possibly this black-market, as per your theory,
or Consortium is back in the picture, or maybe even both organizations are connected?
IMO this was actually a very smooth tie-in that connects human interests, Destiny’s Edge 2.0, and possible dragon locations. I thought the interaction with Belinda also provided a very good grounding that the Delaqua family is indeed working-class, and that class divisions are still a dominating force in human culture – after all that lore-bending molten-nightmare-alliance stuff, it’s good to see the laws, dogmas, and group dynamics of the world are still informing the story.
Or maybe the bandits have begun working with a previously unknown group of sylvari in the Magus Falls area.
Agreed. I didn’t notice too much of an “imbalance” between genders up until the living story, the only male we have in the main group is Braham. There is nothing “wrong” with this, but it seems unlikely that all the men in Tyria lack spines, talent, and good will.
Not only this, but it often feels like the Males are being type casted in a way. -Most- major male lore characters are either Warriors or Guardians it feels like.
Logan – Guardian
Braham – Guardian
Rytlock – Warrior
Faren – WarriorIts kind of like the writers are telling us the male characters are only good enough to be meat shields, that they’re not smart enough to be an Engineer or an Elementalist or a Mesmer. Especially mesmer to be honest. We’ve got 3 human female Mesmers now who are very prominent in the story (Jennah, Anise, and Kasmeer).
Treherene, the main of the personal story who everyone seems to forget is a necromancer and a scholar. The main reason why he got the job of marshal was due to his knowledge.
Gixx the head of the durmand priory is also male.
Tybalt is an engineer and by far the most popular of the mentors.
Evion isn’t much of fighter but he’s crafty.
Guardians are spell swords, not just meat shields.
Not to mention women being sepllcasters, archers and thieves and men being warriors also comes with the implication that woman should stay at the back and can’t be useful without trickery or unless it’s fantasy world where magic makes up for gender.
Correction, Tybalt was an engineer. Now he’s just dead.

It seems to me that the pact had a few hundred “commanders” fighting this battle. I’m not sure why you want an organization that is dedicating to fighting dragons defending a bunch of pirates.
Did I miss the part where the captain’s council formally requested help from the pact?
I can’t keep up – the whole story doesn’t even make sense to me anymore and I’m totally lost.
You’re not the only one. The story has been pretty poor imo. The biggest issue was they never explain anything. Why was she doing this? to awaken the dragon? to take control of the dragon, to team up with the dragon? to become his lieutenant? to drain the power from him? to awaken him to face her nightmares and destroy him herself?
Her motive could be anything and anet won’t tell us either. sigh. Now that scarlet is dead how are we supposed to find out? find some journal or diary of hers in the ruins of the drill?
Hmmm… I suspect you haven’t looked for the answers you want and just want them handed to you. The reason I say this is because the answer to the question “Why did Scarlet do this?” is explained quite clearly. You’ll see screen shots posted in this forum. I’ve seen two of them myself. So, before you continue to complain that Anet doesn’t provide the answers, I suggest you take a moment or two to actually look for them.
Ok I’m going to challenge you on this, its not clearly explained at all. You tell us why she did all this with ingame information. Put it spoiler tags if you want. No speculation either.
It still seems you want to be spoon fed the answers.
