Honestly, mounts have always been a fantastic horizontal progression feature. People love to earn & collect them, and they make your character more personalized. Unfortunately it creates a bunch of content skipping issues & town rendering fail.

I’d still love them..

Do folks know that you can Banish(#3 knock back) people into the Ring of Warding(#5 Wall)?

yeah, it’s the thing the ring does really really well. if you can get the slow activation right. But as far as keeping certain mobs out of the fight to take pressure off other members, it’s sooo meh.

I basically use it prevent easy mobs from making the fight take extra long by running.

it’s too slow & short to take up an entire skill slot. If you could trait or sigil it to last longer, it might be ok, but man.

@DarksunG
80% uptime on protection by just using one single weaponskill and a supreme amount of AH proccs in combination with really nice aoe dps is pretty god kitten nice in pve and if its this is what you are looking for then the hammer has no real competition.

That’s nice & all. & it sounds great on paper.. but on a boss Wand & Focus while kiting = better survivability & much more reliable CC. Hammer CC just kinda stinks. being able to instantly chain a guy with the focus just works better. Im a little at a loss for what I’m supposed to use protection for.. I can’t just tank a boss, & if I keep dodging in and out I 1) lose my consistent protection level 2)drop my DPS to wand levels making it pointless. As for “keeping everyone alive” unless your whole team is melee, then… no.

Maybe I’m basing all of this on boss fights, but I hate the fact that Hammer is a “don’t use this on bosses” weapon. If they made the root move prevent mobs from turning, & last longer I could use it to attack from behind. But again, the reasons you listed don’t actually make it worth picking. & as for a boss.. it’s basically a “don’t use this”

I know allowing CC on a Boss is really iffy in certain situations, but the way it is now, the ring is basically pointless. it might be nice if each touch of the ring wall knocked off a stack of defiant so players could more reliably work toward meaningful CC better. but right now it’s like “wait x seconds” the chain would be better but it’s slow as balls.

Greatsword is great do not get me wrong. But a well played Hammer will out play any other weapon you can equip.

Don’t think I can agree. I still can’t find a reason in PvE to use it other than to interrupt a boss/vet when the chance arises. The survivability is much lower than ranged. especially against a boss. & if I dodge enough to avoid 1 or 2-shots my dps drops & my prot is gone. I do like the condition removal for teammates, but I have so much of that it doesn’t really matter that much.

if you guys can explain to me in detail (how you can survive with just protection right up next to a boss & keep your dps higher than just ranging) why Hammer is good against bosses I’d love to know because I want to use it. but geez.. it just doesn’t seem worth it.

What Old Dungeons Can Learn From FotM

Shorter stints are more fun: Taking 15min to kill one guy doesn’t make the fight more epic or more fun, it makes you dread having to do it again. This can hurt even well designed fights. They will seem fun & cool at first, but quickly become boring & groan-inducing. friends who wanted to help you out will say “nah, that path takes to long”.

Fight Mechanics: Boss fights are more fun when each one has different, unique, story & environment-driven mechanics. Using the Soul-Hammer to break the Colossus chains. Dumping the lava on the mech suit (fight is too kitten long though). getting around the white-out in the snow to light the fires. This is what dungeons are all about. Each fight should be a whole character on it’s own.

Reward higher difficulty: If people wanna keep pushing, crank up the notch & give them more reward. That way people who are ok with playing the normal version will play it & those that find it easy will push on.

What else do you guys think the old dungeons can learn from the new ones?

I understand you all say the weapon is versatile & I think it’s mostly true, but it just doesn’t make enough difference in PvE to justify using the hammer over other things.

In GW1 I loved it because I could stun lock mobs in place & tank/CC/support by keeping the mobs off my teammates. But here I have to struggle to keep them off my teammates for 3 seconds. It’s actually more useful to just be bait & kite in a circle.

The ring & chain are too slow to activate & too short to actually keep mobs off group members. Causing slight hiccup to mob every 40sec is almost never preferable to killing them sooner. & the GW chain pull is pretty much more effective than both the hammer CCs combined. They sound cool on paper but the effectiveness is meh.

I have a hard time seeing a 5sec ring wall having a significant CC in PvE. It’s pretty much for running away. Yes, it’s nice that 1 time you saved your whole team, but I can make that argument for doing just a tad more damage that one time you saved your whole team. & even then a well timed dodge accomplishes the same. The CC doesn’t seem significant. being able to pull every mob in the area to me & tag them in a zerg has profited me more. The Hammer really doesn’t seem to be preferable over anything in PvE.

The Hammer is very PvP focused. (that’s great, I don’t really care about the PvP side) I think they need to split the skills.

The Hammer certainly isn’t broken, but I have a hard time justifying using it other than “I think hammers are cool”. Maybe i’m expecting too much from them, but I always feel like I’m running at a loss & switch to a diff set.

350 Charged Lodestones?!

I find that charged lodestones, along with various other lodestones, are easier to obtain. Fractals of the Mists has generously lowered the prices of lodestones since one generally obtains a fragment of a lodestone or a lodestone itself at the end of each fractal.

Not true. the price of Charged Lodestones & Charged Cores has actually INCREASED since FotM. Cores were at 48s & are not as 86s.

The Lodestone droprate is insanely low. I’ve farmed for about 10hrs for Charged & Corrupted Lodestones & i’ve received 1 Corrupted. I know the game was all “no grind” but the “optional” grind is hilariously bad

I don’t know how I feel about this, since I don’t care much for stats. I get what I “need” to get as defined by the community. I think gear treadmills are an idiotic farce. that being said, I like that the treadheads have something to “progress” in, & I hope this shuts them up. I highly doubt it will though.

I’d still prefer horizontal progression: more skills, new cosmetics options (capes, auras, more pet-like minis, mounts, etc.. visible medals, housing & housing items,)more achievements, leaderboards etc..

Bigger stats? Nope.
More skins? Please.

agreed.

Gear treadmills only give the illusion that you are becoming more powerful. Once you hit the next rung (which you constantly must do) you’re weak again. They don’t give you power, they gate content.

Skins give you esthetic satisfaction every second they are on screen. Stat treadmills, for all the “usefulness” that people tout, have less lasting function than skins.

What folks forget is that said game has a layer base of 10 million people for a reason.

& it has nothing to do with gear treadmills. WoW was considered casual compared to the alternatives when it came out. WoW’s massive success is timing & finally making MMOs accessible for the first time. Once 1 game did that, it was going to be king. No one else has come CLOSE even though most MMOs copy the formula exactly.
No, gear treadmill isn’t WoW’s special sauce. in fact, most players don’t even go for the high end treadmill in WoW.

Dungeons and Dungeon Reward System Overhaul Needed.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

we’re very aware that our reward system is not up to par for dungeons. It is something we are actively working on right now, to try and find a solution for. I’m not going to talk about what our plans are because I don’t want us to be trapped in promises, but I will say this: We know, and are actively working on updating the system.

I’d like to also throw in my vote for MUCH cheaper dungeon armor skins.

Back before the game came out there was a blog post saying we would get one piece of armor skin per run, which meshed perfectly with the anti-grind philosophy. When I found out what the final price of the gear was I couldn’t believe it. It’s astronomical. And, worst of all it doesn’t work as an “optional grind” for those who like grinding, because most of them want STATS. Grind & Cosmetics serve 2 very different groups of people. I’d rather have some super rare + 2% gear out there for the insane gear treadmill people & have the cosmetics be 1 piece per run.

The current system seems backwards…. And as someone who loves cosmetics, I pretty much plan not to get any dungeon gear since the grind seems worse than WoW’s.

In my opinion: People don't play to be average.

Big deal 2 million copies sold is there a point? SWTOR sold over 2 million copies months before it went live, sure the game flopped but 2 million copies means nothing.

You’re comparing GW2 to a game that was so horribly mismanaged that the team itself publicly talked about how bad it was? an Estimated between $150 million and $200 million cost? They aren’t even in the same strata or cost/benefit.

In my opinion: People don't play to be average.

Having a flat line on gear progression at 80 means there’s no further progression for your character.

There’s no sense of “getting more powerful”, which leads to a meh game, hence rapid lost in interest.

Except there was no sense of getting more powerful in the average WoW clone either.. you got better gear to fight a guy you weren’t powerful enough to fight yet, to get more gear to fight a guy you weren’t powerful enough to fight yet, to get more gear to fight a guy you weren’t powerful enough to fight yet, to get more gear to fight ……

when am I “more powerful” in that scheme?.. sounds like you’re ALWAYS behind to me.

The whole idea of infinitely increasing rewards & infinite content lack any connection to reality. IT’S NOT POSSIBLE.

GW1 got you to the end really quickly & it was great. It was all about “how do I take down these foes?” not, “I can’t wait to grind for the sake of getting gear to grind!”

Lol, this joke of skill, you should know how to play your class once you reach 80 and all the inner tweaks, combos and such by the time you reach 80. You don’t hit 80 and then have no idea how to play your class then tell yourself “well, I gotta work on my skillz now”.

There doesn’t have to be a grind for gear but there certainly is a wall of no progression once you hit 80 and it’s really turning people off from even logging on anymore. People like to invest their time into one character to see it get better and better and also to compete with others as well. The gear grind is just a form of competition with other players.

Those people should probably find a different game, then.

You all seem to forget that a lot of us are all old school MMO players. I myself never played GW I hated how everything was instanced, but have been playing MMO’s since EQ1.

I played MMORPGs when they one paper & were called Dungeons & Dragons. RPGs have nothing to do with “progression” they have to do with character. The reason we got “progression” was to simulate character growth & experience in a computer game. It’s a poor simulation & it has no purpose on it’s own. The point was always to have fun playing as another character. having your armor get thicker is just about the cheapest, emptiest way to simulate that. but it’s all we had at the beginning. To say that that was always the goal is to miss the point entirely. If you like bar filling there are a ton of facebook games that will suit your tastes more.
