Thiefs and Norns

Like I said in your other thread, thieves seem to be better at human size or smaller, for the reasons I said there. Your thief you want very mobile and precise, hard to get that with larger races due to mechanics. It’s just more difficult in certain situations, I wouldn’t overlook a large thief for a group spot just because of race choice etc.

Thieves are less squishy than mesmer, but mesmer can be fully a ranged build where it’s not so easy for thieves. There are many bad thieves, trying to be glass cannons, I suggest adding some defense into the build and not give the rest of our thieves a bad name If you can run around cursed shores soaking up lots of hits, then your thief build has potential.

Ele? never played it, just researched it. They are more challenging to play, work harder to achieve the same results as other classes, but can be fun to play. In dungeons I’ll usually quickly welcome a water ele into a general pug group, almost as welcomed as any mesmer build… if none available.

Pros/Cons list for Commander's Compendium

in Players Helping Players

Daywolf.2630

I have commander on my thief.
For wvw you are basically supporting your team by allowing them to see where the action is, or is moving, on the map. All you really need to do is be where the action is, even if not “leading” it’s still very helpful.

If outside of wvw you do pve it’s good to turn it on at meta events. Players cant always see the activity across the entire map, but they can figure it out if a commander tag is there. Of course it’s not good to turn it on and run all over the map randomly heh, otherwise turn it off
Have fun!

edit: oh as for what was mentioned above about multiple commanders, just keep in mind that if you join up with another commander already leading a group, support them, just don’t try to take the field away. We often have two commanders or more working together on our map in the same area, we are 6th in server ranks. After all, if one falls in a bad spot and needs to WP, the other is still there showing the front line location.

Doubt about Norn profession

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

About Thief profession what would be the appropriate race for it?
Also Norn Rangers are powerfull? And is it easy to lvl up as ranger?

Thief is best at human size or smaller, an exellent class and probably 4th most wanted class in dungeons (behind warrior, mesmer and guardian). The problem with larger races is they are at a disadvantage on complex terrain, especially jumping puzzles. When I want to do a JP with a bit of added challenge I pull out my norn warrior or charr guard. It’s so much more challenging… not that that’s a good point. My human thief zips everywhere flawlessly.

Both ranger and thief have faster run speed. BUT imo ranger is too broken (especially pet), I really hate the class, more than in any other game with clkittening. I usually prefer ranger/hunter in most games, far from it here, and some don’t even relish the thought of having one in their group. I rolled one, leveled to mid-lvl, then deleted it.

For norn, heavy armor class is excellent because of their size. Since they are big, they are far easier to follow in MOB pile-ups heh. So like when fighting a meta boss with 30 mobs piled up in there along with other players, you can at least see which way your towering norn is pointed. Charr too but they slouch a bit.

This could also be problematic for a small thief, if the thief is melee (as mine is), but if wielding daggers I can hit weapon skill 2 to realign then watch to make sure auto-attack is cycling thru.

Level 25 warrior - need advice

Daywolf.2630

Just to mention, I didn’t “try to point out” anything regarding other suggestions (and were tldr had general knowledge on their point already), I’m not speaking of end-game but leveling as was part of what was asked. I actually did try sword/axe/mace combinations while leveling (I do have master crafter after all and had 4-80’s at the time of lvling), but none of those weapons could cut-it in the great hordes of MOBs ascending upon my warrior. Sure. Good damage, but too brief and too exposed. For predictable combat where such as you run the same dungeon over and over and over, sure, but leveling? meh

Hammer on the other hand is a 360 degree mobile AOE machine. Hordes of MOBs can ascend on the equipped warrior, but they are going to be faced with chasing the warrior the whole way thru, even endlessly in little circles. Even at metas, the always moving hammer wielding warrior is hitting everything on the field, everything, thus getting xp credit for it weather he lands the killing blow or not. But to keep hitting, it’s far less about power etc and more about defense and just staying up.

Even in dungeons such as AC where warriors are trying to lvl up with a group, as dungeons give the best xp, warriors with glass builds are always falling while groups are often just too inexperienced to support such a warrior build, to keep them engaged. But having some survivability goes a long way, often leads to dungeon completion and that big xp gain.

So at least from my experience regarding leveling a warrior, with good defense and a mobile AOE machine such as the hammer, I was able to level-up my warrior faster than my guardian, thief, engineer and mesmer, quite a bit faster and with far more loot drops. And not only loot, but far better karma gains which I saved up and bought a full set of exotic armor at cursed shore the day my warrior reached 80. I didn’t even bother to get a grandmaster book until then as 60 imo is still too early to increase damage.

wait what?! you want to solo dungeons with a lvl 22 guard??
Arah?

Champ solos I like something around 0-10-30-30-0 mace/shield+GS+bloodlust+100 pwr food or health regen food + superior sharpening stones + cleric or knight armor + berserker trinkets. The 10 in stats can be whatever, I just put it there because I like the +5 weapon hits with flame legion runes and added precision. But yeah, champs, vet karka, whatever…

ok dps, you said solo after all. dps is on my warrior, and that’s not a glass build either, but can’t stay up like my guard.

Haven’t tried to solo Arah though… might want to hold off on that a bit

Level 25 warrior - need advice

glass warrior for leveling? imo bad idea. Worry more about at least toughness and adding in some vitality trinkets or something, health regen food. Glass warrior is mainly for speed running CoF1, and you are not there yet. I’d drop axe/mace for hammer/GS and rifle backup. Hammer/rifle is very good at metas, lots of xp. Keep your armor within 5 lvls or so. Bottom line is you are not going to be gaining as much xp if you are always face down. When I was lvling warrior, I could take on 10 centaurs at a time with a hammer, two or so levels higher than my warrior. They would keep spawning almost as fast as I could kill them, and then I’d kill them too, until my hands got numb. Maybe group with a mesmer at metas, the two of you will about pwr lvl.

Thief? My thief is a survivor. But that is a different topic.

New level 80, ways to get a weapon?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

meh just buy a weapon off of TP, some are only a few gold. Then buy a cheap sigil you can use now and upgrade later. Chances are you will pay more in sigils than the weapon itself at some point. Buy like a major bloodlust or superior purity or something, upgrade later if you feel you need to. Chances are you will have more than one GS anyway, if that’s your primary weapon.

With the krm, go to maybe cursed shore and get exotic armor, you can get a chest piece right now and leggings with a few more karma. Different vendors carry different stats on their armor, so get the pcs that best fit your build, or close to it. Since you only have 100k, you wont have enough for a whole set (looks great on my warrior minus helmet, saved it up for a full set at 80) so just mix in the rest with TP bought armor.

secondly a network of NPC ’s that tell you about events going on in a zone…..you know…more things to direct players in a zone to group events.

That’s more of an issue at lower levels. Often meta events will show on the map. Other cases the WP will be closed which often means something is going on there. Beyond that, players often call out events in high level maps. Lastly, some people turn on commander during events, though sadly too many turn it on just to feel special while they run around solo gathering or something.

Should I go for a Legendary?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

I haven’t and am not trying to get a legendary because I chose to level multiple characters to 80, gear them with multiple sets of exotics I made, and generally play the game rather than just farm for mats to make legendaries that… just look different. It’s what some people play for, I just have a different interest in the game. If over the course of playing the game, I happen to just accumulate materials to make one, I may do so, but it’s just of no concern to me at this point in time. To me it seems like a lot of time into one weapon when I like having many weapons on each character. So it just doesn’t seem to fit my play style.

This is REALLY REALLY weird and I am possibly the only person on earth that does this but I use the num pad for all skills and WASD for movement….My mouse is a track ball so I can easily use it to move for AOES… I really haven’t had a problem playing like that.

I used to do that, before gw2 at least. I’d reach my thumb from my track ball for a few extra 10-keys. Now I just use wsad and surrounding keys with a programmable multi-button track ball. On my laptop with some other games, I use a usb 10-key instead of a keboard for wsad along with a track ball. But those games are not so much key/button mashers like gw2.

Daywolf.2630

So…. you play EvE?

I play many mmo’s and since the mid 90’s. MUD’s before that. Also a lot of indie mmo’s including working on some and their tools, and MUD programming before that. But the point was, web page info/linking is kind of superseded by api’s. Most likely 100% of gw2 players have smart phones, and a mobile app is far more optimized for modern usage. The devs don’t even need to develop the apps, only set up the api and key system, the players make the apps. It’s also hack proof, unlike web pages…

edit in: also, a good point, you can choose what you want other people to see. So, if you choose to show item:1, item:2 but not item:3 (of many items), you can choose what you want to show when making the api key and leave out what you don’t want shown. You can make full access keys showing everything, or limited keys that show little and only what you want shown. Then you give out your key and/or enter it into an app that reads it from the gw2 api site. Show what’s in your bank, show whats in you inventory, show what skills you have or what ever you want to show or not show. It’s not some ridged webpage where you have little to no options. API’s make something like a web armory look like 15 year old technology, because it is.

You left out ele. I just have a GS mesmer from what classes you mentioned, but if I were to ever bother to unlock a 6th slot I’d go with ele. If necro could use a bow, like how they could in gw1, I’d already have a necro with an identity crisis. But they don’t so I wont. Mesmer isn’t too bad, they do have stealth to keep them alive. Mine doesn’t die too often with high vitality.

What do I want, Guard or Warrior?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

I have both as well. Warrior does fine, if you don’t build it like glass. I went balanced with good health regen, runs really well most anywhere. Also, if you liked rifle with your engi (I do on mine), I like the warrior rifle better than the engi rifle. So I mainly run my warrior with signets, regen (+ regen food), GS, hammer and rifle. Quite fun to play.

When it comes to a boss fight, my guard is built for that (warr still does well). Not as high on support, but good group and self heal when needed. I went for more DPS over support, but some support in there. Mostly use GS, shield/mace and a staff backup. Not really any good range for a guard outside of the water.

Worth rolling both classes at some point.

Personaly, I don't think Dailies are a good idea

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

To OP, then don’t do dailies? There are other ways to get ascended items if you feel you want them. I have some characters w/o any ascended items, have multiple sets of exotics, not locked into one set of stats thus having the right stats for the right situation.

Dailies are dailies, some of us have been doing them long before the carrots were added. They were useful for finding where other players were being active and looking for meta groups especially in mid-lvl zones. Like when a daily was useful for hinterlands, there would be more people there doing the meta, which meant groups and more drops. Now, even more people there but less concerned about grouping for better drops, just there to fulfill a daily and get the reward.

So it’s not dailies that are bad, it’s the reward as it draws too many people that want nothing but to fulfill the requirements for the reward. While when it was w/o reward, it just presented a hot-spot to find groups and gain better benefits from the events themselves.

So for me, I still do dailies, but I just take the quickest path to finishing them, then go look for groups elsewhere as the original experience of doing dailies w/o reward has been cheapened and not worth my time any longer.

edit: not only that, but back then there was no assured rare at the end, you just kept doing it and maybe get a rare or two from a number of runs (not that that was the reason why). Groups tended to last longer, doing multiple runs, adding players as openings occurred. Now, if there happens to be a group, they are there to fulfill the daily as well as get their one time run rare, then the group breaks, they all leave.

I’m glad it’s not for everyone. Most developers that set out to produce a general audience game, fail. But for it being “hard”, imo it’s far from it, and has unfortunately become easier in recent patches. It’s sadly becoming more solo player friendly, and all those games ultimately close. I hope it’s not a trend that continues, making it solo friendly and relying on constant reward carrots to get people to group/work together.

whats needed in orr vitality or tough

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Daywolf.2630

Daywolf.2630

Well I have 5-80’s I take to orr. Among them I have a mesmer with high vitality and an engi with high toughness. For getting around, my engi does best between the two. In meta events, both are fairly squishy compared to my other classes. I also have a thief, a good balance, does the best of the three though still 1-hit by that champ giant is nasty. Best setup seems to be balanced, especially at meta events. For my heavy armor chars, well balanced, orr is a cake walk… though seems some stuff can still 1-hit you, mainly at the temple meta.

As for conditions, I don’t know, I remove them. I remove either by a class skill or by a purity weapon which I have one for each character among other sigil slotted weapons. Conditions are not as bad as being slammed by direct damage or launched 80ft into the air etc. But at least that can often be avoided with a dodge.

2. click trading post tab
3. set filter to consumables and sort by price.
4. buy and eat the cheapest food listed (always 2copper each from my experience).
5. achievement done at a total cost of 50c.

I tried that once, and there was nothing cheap for sale the last time, it was all really expensive. I don’t mind spending even a few silver if it helps someone out, but I recall at the time the only thing was really expensive, highly sought after buff food for sale.

I’ll look again next time it comes up. I did manage to get one more dolly in.

hmm? I have 400 cooking, it’s quite true most food is cheap, many at 2c ea and worth far less than the ingredients to make them. Even with cooking, it’s cheaper to just buy most stuff apart from a small amount of L400 foods. Fact is, for those looking to make a little gold from a craft, cooking is just not it.

Anyway, to find food on TP, for those that don’t know since there is no “food” listing, you simply set your filter to consumable and then list it. Click on price sort once and you will be filled with pages and pages of food.

I wish there was 1 zone; just once zone where there are nothing but veterans and champions. Fireballs falling from the sky, lava pits and quick sand traps that swallow you whole. NPC’s stalking you in stealth and ambush you when you least expect it.

Make the world threatening and make the player feel like they’re being hunted.

Now if you could add disabled map to the list and no teleporting (apart from death), I’d be a happy camper, dead often but quite happy. I was a fan of early eq1, played from release, loved how hard it was, getting lost, getting killed, even corpse recovery. Very few mmo’s are actually hard any longer, and those that are – are usually in the indie category and heavily pvp. on the exploding risen you refering to the fail ones in the sunless event?

Whisperwill Bogs at bloodtide coast, risen plague carrier. They remind me of the exploding undead in MYTH II: Soulblighter (classic RPG). In that game, when they would explode, the ground would ripple and deform. Relatively weak here, I’d see their health pool reduced and damage increased. Thus easy to kill with ranged weapons, but if you are not watchful, one may run in and explode causing heavy damage. I’d at least add them to meta events, occasional spawn attack, but also have a number of them wandering across the zone to make players more attentive to surroundings.

Daywolf.2630

Yeah. The top servers, have queue’s, while the lower ones don’t have that (yip if the map is full you cant in till people have made room). Besides that, being on the top servers, also means you are facing the best skilled and experienced enemy’s to fight.

And beside the honour of belonging to the best it doesnt give you anything else. If you are a skilled player and want e.g. a lot of badges, go to a low tier server. If you are not good and want to be in good zerks to learn, go to mid tier.

Actually you get perks on xp, mf, kma, crafting etc. Also easier to get been there done that if your server is good enough to take the castle at some point.

As for “best skilled”, often it’s a pretty good difference if your server/team bothers to buy commander ranks and have a few on any given map. When I log in and toggle commander, and don’t see any others on the map, I often don’t need to look at the pie chart to see how things are going at that moment in time. Less skill, more organized and zerg-zerg gets gains.

It’s entirely possible to make challenging, difficult, fun content without relying on cheap, lazy, annoying mechanics like stuns, snares, knockdowns, and absurd mob health pools. Perhaps someday…

I found the opposite. I wvw my thief and engi, I have about a 3x easier time gaining ranks with my thief compared to my engi. Although grenade kit engi is a better offensive/defensive build for towers and such, my thief has a better time out in the open. But I still play both there, depending if I want to stand near/on walls and chuck grenades or go hunt zergs and short bow them down with the occasional d/d attack of opportunity.

To 80? You get 10 levels per craft. You can retain 2 crafts per character. Seems like a waste to be maxing crafts then removing them to do another. Leveling is already pretty easy in gw2, especially heavy armor classes.

I suppose ANET would really cash in if they sold lvl60 characters including a crafting booster with each purchase lol

Is healing guardian any good ?

Guardian focused on healing often results in over-healing and then not contributing to much else which is not so good. So sure, healing, but you want to raise your buff potential and/or DPS. I mostly run with mace/shield + GS and staff backup (for roaming), so favor more DPS, myself. My guard is mainly for dungeons, some metas.

Mainly degrees are pre-req for programmers, a BS or whatnot. BA, AA or even a Cert for artists, if even that. It’s a poor economy so you see higher qualifications + job exp. I think the best alt is indie, that’s mostly my thing anyway including exp in indie development tools and a number of games. Beware though, a lot of “I don’t know what I’m doing” groups making vaporware after vaporware and never seeing a penny for your efforts. But then again, you won’t find a big demand for support jobs on indie projects.

would 20% gold find be better than 20% MF?

It’s 30% in total on the golden lotus including the upgrade. If you are running 100% or 200% you see the difference. Read the wiki on MF.
