How about a racial core specialization?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Diovid.9506

Doing something like this will eventually require all warriors to be norn, all spellcasters to be asura, all rangers to sylvari and so on, both in PvP and in dungeons/fractals. This is the exact reason why Anet only made races important for looks and story and why Anet made racial skills relatively weak.

Cant test now, but doesnt chill reduce the speed of all animations and thus increase cast time?

No, as I said above (and as said on the wiki and in the chilled description) chilled slows movement speed and increases cooldown times, it does not reduce the speed of animations. Again, the new condition called Slow will do that.

new trait system before expansion or with?

The new trait system is coming before HoT. How long before HoT is not known but since they were still not sure about various things and are actively looking for feedback it will take a while I think.

The elite specializations however are a part of HoT.

That shouldn’t happen. Either it’s a bug (and you should report it) or something else is happening that you didn’t notice.

A new condition is coming though which will have this effect: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Slow

Edit:

You can’t change the way condtition works, even with traits.

That’s not entirely true.

For PvE and WvW this is not a problem since there characters can just mix and match equipment with different stats (zerker trinkets and armor that gives toughness for example). For PvP that’s a different story of course.

i personally hate having a shield, this is a huge blow to my mesmer which i love so much, i cat believe my ’’elite’’ skill is going to involve a stupid shield, so extremely disappointed

It’s not like you need to use the shield. You could just use the new traits, new utility, healing and elite skills and new shatter but use the mesmer’s current weapons.

Be better to ask them to sell the x-pac in the 3 game modes.

  1. PvE only x-pac $30
  2. PvP only x-pac $30
  3. WvW only x-pac $30
  4. All the above $75

edit: imo, i wouldn’t really care what they do, i play all 3 game modes pretty evenly so regardless, i’d be buying the entire x-pac

You do know that the PvP and WvW stuff is coming for free for all players right?

Actually, a lot of details about the other masteries were given in the demo: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mastery. Well, not all of them, we know there will be more when HoT launches.

1500 range removed?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

It’s likely been made baseline. The only other class with that range is engineer with traited grenades. Dulfy.net’s notes on engi include this, which is somewhat unclear if both the range and extra grenade are being made baseline, or just the extra grenade.

Grenadier trait no longer increase the range of grenade or add more grenades (has been made baseline) It now only increase the radius of the impact and velocity.

I’m assuming it means both, and it seems probable that the ranger’s longbow range trait will be the same way.

In the case of granades, their range has been nerfed to 900 and it can no longer be improved with traits.

So please ANet.. just prove me wrong and be more creative than somethign like that …

Do you consider “Warrior” creative? How about “Engineer?” Or “Guardian?” Or, as you seem dismayed by naming the spec after something meaning a wild storm (which can be used metaphorically, btw, not just as a weather system … eg "A tempest of protests arose after a convicted thief was appointed to the city council), what about Mesmer? That’s named after an 18th century guy who theorized animal magnetism as a cure for illness.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Mesmer

Creativity is in the eye of the beholder.

I always thought Mesmer was based on the word mesmerize, given their penchant for illusions and glamours.

Sort of.

Mesmerism
Etymology: From French mesmérisme; so called after Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), a German physician who developed the animal magnetism theory.

Meaning: The method or power of gaining control over someone’s personality or actions, as in hypnosis or suggestion.

Idea: NPC race's skills as Specilizations

To an extent this might be what the elite specializations are already doing. The Ranger’s elite specialization is the druid and thus is probably closely related to the Druids. Even stronger evidence comes from the engineer. It’s pretty much certain that the engineer will get a hammer. Who else have we seen wielding a hammer? The Nuhoch, which also happen to be alchemists. That might not be a coincidence.

I don’t know how viable this is in the long run but I can see some possibilities there.

The first tracks are there to unlock traits, while the latter tracks are there to unlock skills.

I’d love if they actually looked at the numbers and adjusted them, but I just don’t remember them ever actually doing this.

Except they have never asked for feedback this long before a balance update went live so there is nothing to compare this case to.

Burning stacking will be massively superior at x7.7 Bleeding DPS unless we severely reduce the stack limit.

That’s only true if it’s as easy to apply burn as it is to apply bleed and if the applied stacks are the same duration. Neither of these is true AFAIK.

ESPECIALLY if Anet goes ahead with restricting Taunt to HoT class content only

We already know of at least one instance of a core profession getting taunt, namely rangers using one of their grandmaster traits in the beastmastery line.

Im curious about this sentence btw.
“Revenants will gain an Elite, a heal and a set of utilities of the same type”

I’m guessing it means that the elite specialization of the revenant has access to one additional legendary compared to normal revenants since each legendary gives an elite, a heal and a set of utilities.

The revenent article said the following:

New boons, conditions, and status effects have been added to the revenant as well as spread across other professions’ specializations. These are cool ways we’ll allow players to interact with new types of skills in our combat system.

That seems to imply that the new effects are not going to be a part of the core professions. However I’m sure there will be a balance update just before or right after the release of HoT and frankly I’d be suprised if that didn’t add some of these effects to some old skills and traits.

More playable races

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

Why wouldn’t someone want to see more races? Granted we’ll not be seeing any new races in HoT but in an ideal world the more races the better.

Well, I’m guessing the main reason not to want more races is that they cost resources which many people want spent on something else.

Other reasons might include: armors not fitting the new race’s body type, the new race being too cute/slapstick, the new race not fitting the lore and story etcetera.

That all said though… I want my Tengu! (and not just as a tonic, as an actual race with a personal story, a city and so on)

Diovid.9506

I think all we know for certain is that there will be maps, plural. Right? I sure hope so…

Yes.

So, anyone care to speculate on how many/how big the new maps will be?

I’m convinced there will be at least 3. However, beyond that I can’t really say.

and three is already very small given that one of them will be a city of some sort

I’m not so sure we will actually get a city as a seperate zone. Although that golden city is a possible candidate.

I’m mostly into RPGs for the exploration (hence my concern), so I really hope HoT is worthy of being called an expansion and doesn’t turn out to be glorified dlc.

Note that they are aiming for zones which are not only much more vertical than other maps (and thus bigger per square foot) but also more content dense and replayable.

However, I get where you’re coming from. I hope Anet will pleasently suprise us with the number of areas / the size of areas. Specifically I hope we will not only get zones to the south of Verdant Brink but also zones to the north of Verdant Brink, The Silverwastes and Brisban Wildlands. We’ll have to wait and see though.

Please don't reward retroactive MasteryPoints

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

The problem is some stuff you can’t do again with a character.
For example, let’s say you get Mastery Point for finishing your Personal Story or completing the World Map, a player shouldn’t be punished for having it complete already and be forced to create a new char just for that while a newer player that was still finishing it will get the reward much easier.

Also, unlock mastery is a thing, progress them is another story.
Veterans will be able to unlock more mastery right when HoT begins but we’ll still need to progress each one from 0.

I mean the points we “gathered” from leveling up a lvl 80 character for 2.7 years now and stuff like that.

Except you don’t get mastery points from experience/levels, you only get mastery points from certain activities (such as map completion and personal story instances). This is a common misunderstanding of the mastery system.

This was made by a human and is the clearest example of a golem made/controlled by a non-asura.

The Skritt example Aaron mentioned is probably this one (although it is actually a driverless powersuit). There are a few more examples I think of skritt using parts of broken golems to create new functional golems though.

Scarlet (a sylvari) had her Twisted Watchwork, which were sort-of golems and which in turn were based on the human-made Watchknights.

This could also be called a golem and was made by dwarves.

1. Removing the greatest fear storyline and changing the order of the level 80 story.
2. Waiting so long to revert the change mentioned in 1.
3. Not telling us why on earth the change was made in the first place.

Edit:

4. Although I enjoy the new trait system (by that I mean I enjoy having to do tasks to unlock traits), I really dislike the new trait point progression. I wish we would get 1 trait point at level 15 and every 5 levels after that. I also wish we would the trait tiers at lower levels (adept at level 15, master at 40-ish and grandmaster at 70-ish). This is more similar to how the progession was before the trait change.

yeah.. eem.. no!

you’re wrong, they do, over 50% of the german populace knows how to speak english just fine. they just don’t want to. they prefer it that you speak german. bow to your overlords and all that jazz..

I’ve been to Germany many times, the country has the higher % of non-English speaking people. (Probably of the whole Europe).

Everything is translated to German. Even the TV has every single show with German voice-over…

Your 50% is probably more of a 20-30%, and that only to the big cities because of work..

Actually, this suggests that 56% of Germans have sufficient skills in English to hold conversations. Yes, that is lower than some other Northwest European countries but it is not as low as you make it sound.

Not that I see this discussion on percentages as being conductive of the debate at hand here.

Can we get to be dwarves in the future?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Diovid.9506

Diovid.9506

The dwarves are practically extinct, allowing player character dwarves would completely negate a large portion of Tyrian lore

Asura? Norn? Quaggans? Skritt? Once upon a time, these things were not part of Tyrian lore. Now they are.

Not sure what you mean by “once upon a time”, as in back in GW1? Asura and Norn featured there so they were around 250 years before now.

What is meant is that Asura, Norn and Sylvari were only introduced in the Guild Wars universe so that they could be playable in GW2. All 3 of them were introduced in Eye of the North (though Sylvari only through a cutscene) and Eye of the North was only released as a prelude to GW2. Therefore, the reasoning goes, when Arenanet decides they want to make a race playable they can just create the narrative neccesary for making that race playable, even if that narrative wasn’t there before.

However, I would personally argue that doing so is easier with races that have either no story at all yet (as was the case with Norn, Asura and Sylvari before EotN) or have relatively little story (as is the case with Tengu and Largos) than with races which have relatively more story, especially if that story is presently negative for those races (as in the case of the dwarves).

the whole reason why i got hyped for GW2 is because of the possibility of a playable dwarven race.

The whole reason you got hyped for GW2 is because of the possibility of a playing a dwarf? And you talk about other people’s blind obsession? And if that’s all, then how did you stick around for so long?

The simplest solution would be to reveal that someone finally found a way to reverse the Rite. Reversing it could even be part of their PS intro. The Lore currently states that everyone is far more powerful than beings were 250 years ago, so it’s not that big of a stretch to say a solution was found.

But for there to be a solution, there first needs to be a problem. In their stoned state, the dwarves are much stronger and more focused than they normally are. Why would they want to become flesh? Why would anyone want them to become flesh?

what would you do if you can not make more of your race but your race is dying out, would you stubborn stay stone and let your race be annihilated or do you find a way to keep your race alive?

They know they might go extinct but they don’t care. They knew that risk was there even before they initiated the rite.

We don’t know and I doubt we will find out long before release, if we find out before release at all.

  • Masteries, are they horizontal or vertical progression ?

Horizontal-ish. Some masteries seem to be somewhat vertical, but only within the expansion areas (such as being more resistent against conditions caused by Mordrem). Those masteries give no benefits outside of those areas. See: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mastery

When you’re ready I expect a blog post detailing these systems and maybe addressing some of my concerns.

It is also revealed that the White Mantle are actually the leaders of the Bandits raiding Kryta using the Bandits identity as a alias to hide their existence.

They aren’t the leaders of the bandits, they just are bandits. It’s quite a difference. They’ve basically dropped so far that they’re hardly a dangerous cult, they’re nothing more than bandits.

To that end, White Mantle won’t have anything to do with the story again, ever. We’ve eradicated them from power and the human storyline of Missing Parents shows us just how strangled they are now.

I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure that various hints in Dry Top and the Silverwastes point towards the White Mantle still being quite active and still being a cult. I firmly believe the White Mantle were behind the mining operation in Dry Top and behind the notes about the ‘New Kryta’ or whatever it was in the Silverwastes (along with the badges found in the Silverwastes).

Well one of the goals of the Mursaat was to keep the Titans contained. They used humans to that end in a way that was less than morally steady. I don’t expect to see anything about the White Mantle since they were kind of dealt with a long time ago but who knows.

After all, it wasn’t that the Mursaat were allied with the White Mantle. The Mursaat were just using the White Mantle. Maybe people who got more into the lore revealed in the Realm of Torment area of Nightfall could have more insight otherwise.

Well the White Mantle still exists in Tyria as it was revealed in Human Missing Parents Story path but they only exist as a secret cult now.

It is also revealed that the White Mantle are actually the leaders of the Bandits raiding Kryta using the Bandits identity as a alias to hide their existence.

Since the Bandits are moving deeper into Maguuma, with the Nightmare Court and Inquest, word of the return of the Mursaat should reach the White Mantle or members of the White Mantle that are going into Maguuma.

It’s worse than that though, since the bandits also have ties to the Krytan ministry and to centaurs.

I’m also pretty sure i read somewhere that the Charr believe Melandru is the one that shaped Tyria, or created it.
Melandru’s the coolest god of the whole Deities Pantheon if you ask me. She’s the oldest of the Six, she’s revered by many other cultures (Charr, Quaggans, Centaurs and others that I can’t think of atm) and she’s got these super cool wings

Yes the Charr believe that about Melandru but they do not revere her. This quote comes from the Ecology of the Charr:

Before the time of the humans, it is said the Charr had no gods, no concept of divine beings with more power than themselves. They knew of Melandru, and even had legends that described how she created the world. But to the Charr, these beings were not to be worshiped or feared–they were to be fought, and if possible, destroyed.
